00:00:22   oh geez I like I let a peek behind the [TS]

00:00:25   curtain didn't I yeah [TS]

00:00:26   now people realize that it's not [TS]

00:00:27   happening simultaneously here's another [TS]

00:00:30   piece here's another peek okay so a I [TS]

00:00:33   hate being late for things and I'm sorry [TS]

00:00:34   and our be computers fucking hate [TS]

00:00:38   computers [TS]

00:00:38   mhm oh boy now we're on a topic that we [TS]

00:00:41   both agree on [TS]

00:00:42   you know I I'm always late two things [TS]

00:00:46   too [TS]

00:00:47   we've talked about this many times yeah [TS]

00:00:49   that you take you nine minutes and move [TS]

00:00:50   to believe this is what makes the [TS]

00:00:52   decision makes this such a compelling [TS]

00:00:53   experience I think for our listeners [TS]

00:00:55   that people are helping is that we are [TS]

00:00:57   very different people you know and I you [TS]

00:00:59   know I mean in some ways very different [TS]

00:01:01   I'd say we were pretty different yeah I [TS]

00:01:03   mean you know are we missing anything [TS]

00:01:04   95% the same as chimps you and I both [TS]

00:01:08   are 95% the same as chimps no I think [TS]

00:01:10   it's more than that I think it's 90 I [TS]

00:01:12   think it's 97.2 a set like a resistor or [TS]

00:01:16   is that arithmetic arithmetic was an [TS]

00:01:19   Aramaic an Aramaic scale on its air make [TS]

00:01:22   your aromatically on Eric scale where [TS]

00:01:25   97.2 53 actually it's mixolydian oh [TS]

00:01:29   sorry i thought we're still in 15 time [TS]

00:01:31   for the fridge and a light called the [TS]

00:01:33   snake charmer time and we said hello I'm [TS]

00:01:36   ritchie blackmore it's time to reset [TS]

00:01:38   your clock that's not even funny you [TS]

00:01:40   didn't I did he talks like that the [TS]

00:01:41   American i don't think anybody talks [TS]

00:01:43   like that the only be able to talk like [TS]

00:01:44   that our community theater people who [TS]

00:01:46   are trying to do a British accent my [TS]

00:01:49   mother and I let my mother is alive [TS]

00:01:50   directed a lot of place in Rhode Island [TS]

00:01:53   you did who your mother-in-law my [TS]

00:01:56   mother-in-law has a pistol you my [TS]

00:01:58   mother-in-law that was all she is a [TS]

00:02:00   pistol is oh darling [TS]

00:02:04   oh how we never met your mother law now [TS]

00:02:06   she's back you know she's back here she [TS]

00:02:08   spent some of her time with family in [TS]

00:02:10   Florida [TS]

00:02:11   and other times with family around here [TS]

00:02:13   so actually gonna go see her tomorrow [TS]

00:02:14   which is really nice [TS]

00:02:15   yeah we do i will need all be in the [TS]

00:02:17   same place at the same time she should [TS]

00:02:19   be a guest [TS]

00:02:20   anyway you know a lot of people may not [TS]

00:02:22   know because they have a life and they [TS]

00:02:24   don't really research these things [TS]

00:02:26   science science math a lot of people [TS]

00:02:30   don't know those things [TS]

00:02:31   everybody likes politics and nobody [TS]

00:02:32   looks at civics can I just put it on a [TS]

00:02:34   card [TS]

00:02:34   oh my goodness that's a great statement [TS]

00:02:36   mt11i meet your specific spod cast god [TS]

00:02:40   damn it you're fucking right this is [TS]

00:02:42   that this is a podcast about how to be a [TS]

00:02:44   better citizen according to us and I'm a [TS]

00:02:46   little bit offended when i go on itunes [TS]

00:02:48   and it says that this is a personal [TS]

00:02:50   journal file that was my choice would [TS]

00:02:52   you rather go somewhere else it's yeah [TS]

00:02:53   civics is a civics category or education [TS]

00:02:56   religion [TS]

00:02:57   mm-hmm I'm trying know what we take that [TS]

00:02:59   up i come on out Patrick siblings [TS]

00:03:03   just that sounds very sounds very you [TS]

00:03:06   know what was that what was that thing [TS]

00:03:08   that all the kids were doing lateral [TS]

00:03:09   livejournal that's where I learned about [TS]

00:03:11   you [TS]

00:03:12   yeah i know that's where people talk [TS]

00:03:13   about stuff I never joined a photograph [TS]

00:03:16   of you before had any idea who you were [TS]

00:03:17   you're holding snacks [TS]

00:03:18   you're not alone whoo-ha other people [TS]

00:03:21   have photographs of me because I because [TS]

00:03:24   I'm an archetype I represent a certain [TS]

00:03:26   kind of approachable cuddly bear [TS]

00:03:29   yeah yeah I got the ball and statue [TS]

00:03:33   crossing a statue and teddy bear lovable [TS]

00:03:35   statuesque teddy bear vagina dentata a [TS]

00:03:39   cross between a gazelle and a catfish [TS]

00:03:41   whoo-hoo good eatin fish I that's just a [TS]

00:03:45   guy selfish that's really more of a [TS]

00:03:47   description of a baseball wife I've seen [TS]

00:03:50   Richard got used to write about gazelle [TS]

00:03:51   fish the silvery blue gazelle fish and [TS]

00:03:54   shellfish development you know what [TS]

00:03:56   here's the point that there's an image [TS]

00:03:58   so the selfish belton that's another one [TS]

00:04:02   of those great unmade not see Jerry [TS]

00:04:04   Lewis movie about insufficient you go [TS]

00:04:07   with the making it Boeing I am [TS]

00:04:10   here's the thing what people may not [TS]

00:04:11   realize this is an audio presentation [TS]

00:04:13   but there is an image that is associated [TS]

00:04:15   with our visits the I think you've seen [TS]

00:04:17   before so it's a little logo for the [TS]

00:04:19   show and you remember what that's from [TS]

00:04:21   it [TS]

00:04:23   it's a picture of you with some really [TS]

00:04:25   creepy looking glasses and meet with a [TS]

00:04:27   bad haircut looking at you and I took a [TS]

00:04:30   photograph with my feature phone to call [TS]

00:04:31   it I my flip phone in about 2,000 bone [TS]

00:04:36   40,000 five and two photo of you and me [TS]

00:04:39   at the ucsf computer store because my [TS]

00:04:44   lady got a discount there and we want me [TS]

00:04:46   about your computer that day that's a [TS]

00:04:48   photograph of a camera taking a picture [TS]

00:04:50   of us on a screen and i took a photo of [TS]

00:04:52   it for no particular reason that was the [TS]

00:04:54   early days of computers that could take [TS]

00:04:57   photographs of you [TS]

00:04:58   no no this was my fault oh yes so [TS]

00:05:00   there's getting correct tops laptops [TS]

00:05:03   that had a camera facing you might have [TS]

00:05:05   been like a security camera a webcam [TS]

00:05:07   like a copy underwear cam em because who [TS]

00:05:09   now when week so we went in there and we [TS]

00:05:11   got you a laptop a laptop computer and [TS]

00:05:15   then that was a witch i still have to [TS]

00:05:18   this thing [TS]

00:05:19   yeah this is all dead now right 10 [TS]

00:05:21   minutes till it still works with just [TS]

00:05:22   over in the corner because I got a I got [TS]

00:05:25   an ipad yeah god you like it [TS]

00:05:29   well I do like it but I don't like to [TS]

00:05:30   advertise things understand but you have [TS]

00:05:32   big if you have really big fingers [TS]

00:05:34   remember during you i do you remember [TS]

00:05:36   during the during the the nineties when [TS]

00:05:39   bands would put a piece of black [TS]

00:05:40   electrical tape over the fender logo on [TS]

00:05:43   their guitars because they didn't want [TS]

00:05:44   to be advertising you can tell that's a [TS]

00:05:46   fender [TS]

00:05:47   exactly Oh what kind of guitar is that [TS]

00:05:49   oh my life is looking up on the [TS]

00:05:51   headstock it has that headstock that's [TS]

00:05:53   literally a fucking trademark offender [TS]

00:05:56   nobody can tell [TS]

00:05:59   hey sexy jagwire i'm driving a Jaguar [TS]

00:06:01   but I put black tape over the little [TS]

00:06:03   fucking cat it's a Les Paul but a but [TS]

00:06:06   it's yeah i did my camera when you put a [TS]

00:06:09   piece of black electrical tape over the [TS]

00:06:10   word casio well I read about this and at [TS]

00:06:13   first I thought it was a douche thing [TS]

00:06:15   and then i thought was kind of smart and [TS]

00:06:17   cool and now i think it might be do you [TS]

00:06:18   think it's still kinda cool so he knows [TS]

00:06:20   it's not using shaving cream so the Viet [TS]

00:06:22   Cong can smell you that it's you know [TS]

00:06:24   what can I just say it is almost exactly [TS]

00:06:26   that [TS]

00:06:27   not really but kind of almost exactly [TS]

00:06:28   that which is I got an okay nice camera [TS]

00:06:31   like you know I don't use as much now [TS]

00:06:33   that I've got the same brand of an ipad [TS]

00:06:35   yeah [TS]

00:06:36   entertainment I've had you know we're [TS]

00:06:38   fucking fanny pack you like such as [TS]

00:06:39   picture with an ipad i see these dad's [TS]

00:06:42   running around the playground and we're [TS]

00:06:43   fairly back right now they're like [TS]

00:06:45   they're making the world's saddest [TS]

00:06:46   independent student film [TS]

00:06:48   yeah you know what you know what sad [TS]

00:06:50   dad's hazardous helio Aristotle look [TS]

00:06:55   over here [TS]

00:06:56   shut up don't you put a piece of tape [TS]

00:06:59   over your camera so i have an ok nice [TS]

00:07:01   camera i have have a in SL are like [TS]

00:07:03   having sex from it's a trump camera [TS]

00:07:05   isn't it it's it's a camera it's Trump [TS]

00:07:08   camera my friends your innards disagree [TS]

00:07:10   i think it's more camera that I will [TS]

00:07:11   ever need my whole life because my old [TS]

00:07:13   camera that i loved like that stolen [TS]

00:07:15   about this one a couple years ago for my [TS]

00:07:16   birthday party for myself so anyway it's [TS]

00:07:18   it says it says that it's a it doesn't [TS]

00:07:20   matter if it's a canon because only you [TS]

00:07:21   know the fantasies nikon's so that [TS]

00:07:23   matter but the front of it has the word [TS]

00:07:25   cannon on it in a number of whitish [TS]

00:07:29   things okay how about this [TS]

00:07:31   erotic next thing you know I know you [TS]

00:07:35   know this we decide pretty sure to [TS]

00:07:36   discuss this [TS]

00:07:37   you know about the style of camouflage [TS]

00:07:40   that they would paint onto I don't get [TS]

00:07:43   the terminology wrong with warships that [TS]

00:07:45   the American team it's an incredibly [TS]

00:07:47   disorienting right [TS]

00:07:49   can you describe because it's very [TS]

00:07:50   angular and it makes it very don't spoil [TS]

00:07:52   the ending but it's a very difficult [TS]

00:07:53   from a distance to see what kind of ship [TS]

00:07:56   it is and if their in-group potentially [TS]

00:07:57   how many there are right right yeah it's [TS]

00:08:00   gray and white and like very very very [TS]

00:08:04   diffused colors and giant trapezoids [TS]

00:08:07   painted on the sides of these ships you [TS]

00:08:10   know it's like okay I'm up like a [TS]

00:08:12   Mondrian pain i'm just going to say but [TS]

00:08:14   with some weird diagonals thrown in [TS]

00:08:16   there you'd never expect them it's a [TS]

00:08:18   little bit like when somebody tries to [TS]

00:08:19   make an extra key in real life you know [TS]

00:08:21   what I mean you ever see this kind of [TS]

00:08:22   things really sad [TS]

00:08:23   we don't want to expect a battleship [TS]

00:08:24   mondrian get them true [TS]

00:08:28   our primary weapon on dreams about it i [TS]

00:08:32   think it already know all modern art is [TS]

00:08:36   overrated i went to that that Los [TS]

00:08:38   Angeles a mocha mocha museum of modern [TS]

00:08:42   art moma mobile app moma i went to it [TS]

00:08:46   and I walked around and you know and [TS]

00:08:48   there's they got the jazz [TS]

00:08:49   pajamas and they got there this is in [TS]

00:08:52   the bats and I message on true true two [TS]

00:08:54   flags online on would come on flags on a [TS]

00:08:57   lot of flags on plywood but all it's you [TS]

00:08:59   know it's a museum of modern art they [TS]

00:09:01   had they had had one of everybody and I [TS]

00:09:04   know that as a as a cultured person as a [TS]

00:09:06   public intellectual I'm supposed to be [TS]

00:09:08   what really a public figure as a public [TS]

00:09:10   figure but we're not just a public [TS]

00:09:12   figure main lady gaga's a public figure [TS]

00:09:13   I'm a public intellectual can i find [TS]

00:09:17   modern art to be a thought crime [TS]

00:09:20   ok just really quickly I I'm gonna put [TS]

00:09:22   that over here in the very very special [TS]

00:09:24   power to just get this out of the way [TS]

00:09:26   because it's not that interesting and [TS]

00:09:27   want to be done with it [TS]

00:09:28   I heard that one good way to keep your [TS]

00:09:32   camera from being strike quickly [TS]

00:09:34   stealable this is going to sound crazy [TS]

00:09:36   it's like the battleships there you take [TS]

00:09:38   some gaffers tape [TS]

00:09:39   yeah which unlike duct tape is that you [TS]

00:09:41   know a matt tape and it's not as like [TS]

00:09:43   you know sparingly permanent you just [TS]

00:09:45   take a little bit to this tape and you [TS]

00:09:47   put it over the logo but you also put it [TS]

00:09:48   over any like non-black piece of the [TS]

00:09:51   front of your camera that will happen [TS]

00:09:52   this sounds crazy but I swear to god [TS]

00:09:54   it's like the battleships if you saw me [TS]

00:09:56   across the room and I don't have a strap [TS]

00:09:58   also because I roll it just looks like a [TS]

00:10:00   piece of junk camera made out of tape it [TS]

00:10:02   doesn't take a camera doesn't here's the [TS]

00:10:04   thing John this is the thing about is [TS]

00:10:05   the compassion it doesn't read as a [TS]

00:10:07   camera what you situate Cameron s an SLR [TS]

00:10:10   so much by that logo with a flash thing [TS]

00:10:13   could be no I mean and this little I'm [TS]

00:10:15   telling you so it just looks like a [TS]

00:10:16   black pop cam that you're holding up [TS]

00:10:18   here you really look carefully at it you [TS]

00:10:20   would see it's a camera but does not [TS]

00:10:21   stick out like these idiots downtown [TS]

00:10:23   with a little fucking cameras with the [TS]

00:10:24   plastic lenses on and i'll get a decent [TS]

00:10:26   interesting so and that's why I did that [TS]

00:10:28   but now here's the other thing that's [TS]

00:10:30   cool about that if you are going to try [TS]

00:10:31   and be take photos on the sly guy is [TS]

00:10:33   usually a dick like you are much too [TS]

00:10:35   unlike upskirt photos and now I know [TS]

00:10:38   yeah I my mom always used to tell me [TS]

00:10:40   she's to worry about mirrors and she's [TS]

00:10:41   never heard of mirrors on shoes that's [TS]

00:10:42   all that's all technology it's all it's [TS]

00:10:45   all iphones up the skirt and everything [TS]

00:10:46   is that fiber now I have a good friend [TS]

00:10:48   that I caught some guy taking a picture [TS]

00:10:50   of his girlfriend skirt in in a costco [TS]

00:10:53   and he beat the shit out of the guy [TS]

00:10:55   right now Hosko yeah yeah yeah just like [TS]

00:10:57   because he was walking he was you know [TS]

00:10:59   he was 15 feet behind or whatever and [TS]

00:11:01   his lady was up ahead [TS]

00:11:03   this guy's swoops in and with the phone [TS]

00:11:05   like up the skirt and it and my buddy [TS]

00:11:09   just did a flying like a flying tackle [TS]

00:11:12   react like this guy right out and and [TS]

00:11:14   then big big brawl in the costco in the [TS]

00:11:17   and that the creep was trying to break [TS]

00:11:19   his phone and she's it was a whole whole [TS]

00:11:23   to do well without value pack of punches [TS]

00:11:26   yeah it's one of my it's one of the [TS]

00:11:28   great strategy and then seemed to seem [TS]

00:11:29   to like arm will be like really dirty [TS]

00:11:32   things for their own sake [TS]

00:11:33   it strikes me they're like dirty just [TS]

00:11:35   dirtiness as a thing and it seems like [TS]

00:11:38   the upskirt thing is maybe they're just [TS]

00:11:40   the largest producers of this may be [TS]

00:11:42   subtracted that they have they are very [TS]

00:11:44   comfortable with fetishizing a youth [TS]

00:11:46   young people [TS]

00:11:48   yes the school girl uniforms yeah and so [TS]

00:11:51   the upskirt photo is this i think is a [TS]

00:11:53   side is an adjunct of the like little [TS]

00:11:57   girl sort of panty fetishism who that is [TS]

00:12:00   so popular in Asia just part of the [TS]

00:12:02   dirty things though is I'm really not [TS]

00:12:04   supposed to have this you can't just [TS]

00:12:06   walk out and go with like you know [TS]

00:12:07   heiser vending machine working blah baby [TS]

00:12:08   you can't say things like that but you [TS]

00:12:10   can like buy panties from a machine is a [TS]

00:12:12   correct if you heard this you can by [TS]

00:12:14   panties well you know here in America [TS]

00:12:15   you can get pennies online you can buy [TS]

00:12:18   used panties online using your computer [TS]

00:12:20   using a computer they will come up [TS]

00:12:22   thanks sure you can next day air i had [TS]

00:12:24   someone offer to buy my shoes once now [TS]

00:12:27   cut me off guard yeah you know the the [TS]

00:12:30   guitar player the presidents of the USA [TS]

00:12:33   his shoes are it is his old shoes that [TS]

00:12:36   he spray-painted gold are at the EMP [TS]

00:12:38   they're one of the displays that you you [TS]

00:12:40   pay $25 to go walk around and look at it [TS]

00:12:43   it's like that Paul Island pay to [TS]

00:12:44   acquire this you know when that when [TS]

00:12:46   they were first opening the EMP it [TS]

00:12:49   seemed like they had billions of dollars [TS]

00:12:51   who well they did have billions of [TS]

00:12:53   dollars but the but what it seems like [TS]

00:12:54   at the time was that the grunge movement [TS]

00:12:57   was going to be just as famous and earth [TS]

00:13:00   shattering as every rock movement that [TS]

00:13:03   had come before it right and so here was [TS]

00:13:07   here was an opportunity for people to [TS]

00:13:09   buy basically to buy Elvis's shoes right [TS]

00:13:12   if you could go back in time and bye bye [TS]

00:13:15   Elvis shoes [TS]

00:13:16   by jimi hendrix's shirt like a broken [TS]

00:13:20   strap from those guys for you know you [TS]

00:13:24   for 25 bucks or whatever again do it and [TS]

00:13:28   so it was it was a little too soon after [TS]

00:13:31   the grunge years and all these guys were [TS]

00:13:32   still standing around a lot of them [TS]

00:13:34   didn't have any money anymore and they [TS]

00:13:36   opened up this rocket museum and [TS]

00:13:38   goodwill guys just get out lately wanna [TS]

00:13:42   you wanna buy my works think that they [TS]

00:13:44   said well it's not that they showed up [TS]

00:13:46   its like the EMP sent 50 people out into [TS]

00:13:49   the city like going knocking on [TS]

00:13:51   practice-based doors and saying hey you [TS]

00:13:53   guys got any can we buy your old guitar [TS]

00:13:56   your broken guitar that's over there in [TS]

00:13:58   the corner you know you look over and [TS]

00:14:00   there's some $25 three-story target sure [TS]

00:14:03   about that tube screamer it doesn't work [TS]

00:14:06   I don't 2,000 bucks you know and they [TS]

00:14:09   were just throwing it down so the EMP [TS]

00:14:10   has a mute as a huge warehouse full of [TS]

00:14:13   all this crap that belongs to these [TS]

00:14:16   also-ran bands that this kind of itself [TS]

00:14:20   it sounds like a sad good but it's [TS]

00:14:22   incredible it's I mean it's truly [TS]

00:14:24   amazing like they bought Soundgarden's [TS]

00:14:26   van therefore therefore old ford van is [TS]

00:14:29   it interesting [TS]

00:14:30   not at all know what that would sound [TS]

00:14:32   garden should have done and in any other [TS]

00:14:34   situation would have done is sold that [TS]

00:14:36   van for five hundred dollars to some [TS]

00:14:38   fledgling band who drove it until it and [TS]

00:14:41   caught on fire and then it would be sent [TS]

00:14:43   to the crusher who and they would [TS]

00:14:45   survive only in photographs and and that [TS]

00:14:48   is how history is made but but in fact [TS]

00:14:50   this van is preserved hit in a [TS]

00:14:54   hermetically-sealed warehouse somewhere [TS]

00:14:56   in seattle on the off-chance who that 45 [TS]

00:15:00   years from now somebody's like oh man [TS]

00:15:03   Soundgarden's van it's worth of Fort i'm [TS]

00:15:06   just imagining the docents work there [TS]

00:15:08   who probably a very thin bones and large [TS]

00:15:09   glasses and have to walk by and go you [TS]

00:15:11   know this is pretty much blue man and [TS]

00:15:13   van but we're pretty sure can fail [TS]

00:15:14   meeting here at one point that's yeah [TS]

00:15:16   that's all we know that it's not it's [TS]

00:15:18   you know I don't think it may be too [TS]

00:15:20   early to say but i'm i'm going to say [TS]

00:15:22   that it's but it's never going to be [TS]

00:15:25   Elvis's shoes you know what I mean no [TS]

00:15:27   totally and you know part of this now [TS]

00:15:29   you're [TS]

00:15:30   you know how markets work right i mean [TS]

00:15:31   it's it's beyond supply and demand its [TS]

00:15:33   you know it the whole diamond racket the [TS]

00:15:35   way that works is that they deliberately [TS]

00:15:37   produce only so many to keep it kind of [TS]

00:15:40   scarce right so in this case you're not [TS]

00:15:42   even trying to make scarcely had [TS]

00:15:43   diamonds you're making scarcely out of [TS]

00:15:44   like Kleenex boxes right now and I think [TS]

00:15:46   when hard times coming to someone i just [TS]

00:15:48   read about somewhat some museum just [TS]

00:15:50   acquire something really squirrely and I [TS]

00:15:53   forget what it is but you know the thing [TS]

00:15:54   is if you fall on hard times it becomes [TS]

00:15:56   like like trading trading pogs a [TS]

00:15:58   pokémon's 45 Boggs it's like training [TS]

00:16:02   training pokémon's no fucking line is I [TS]

00:16:06   know it's a card game with angles to try [TS]

00:16:08   him on that strain it so no it's like [TS]

00:16:10   beanie babies people invested a lot of [TS]

00:16:12   money and just like the tulips exactly [TS]

00:16:14   beanie babies and then it got so big it [TS]

00:16:16   was like the tulips everybody was buying [TS]

00:16:17   and I wouldn't know who I went to I went [TS]

00:16:20   to I one of these a state sales one time [TS]

00:16:23   and walking through this house and in [TS]

00:16:27   the back of the house there's an entire [TS]

00:16:28   bedroom just full of beanie babies like [TS]

00:16:32   they've built rat they built the giant [TS]

00:16:34   industrial strength shelves and bins and [TS]

00:16:39   bins and bins of beanie babies [TS]

00:16:41   oh my god it's way over there nicely [TS]

00:16:43   displayed or was it just dawned on me [TS]

00:16:45   that it was it was a it was clearly a [TS]

00:16:48   hoard it was less a collection of marble [TS]

00:16:50   horde and these people because it was an [TS]

00:16:53   estate sale obviously they were old [TS]

00:16:54   people [TS]

00:16:55   mhm and they had hoarded these beanie [TS]

00:16:57   babies thinking that that they were [TS]

00:17:01   going to be worth a ton of money you [TS]

00:17:04   know this was their retirement this this [TS]

00:17:06   room there were 10,000 beanie babies in [TS]

00:17:08   another phrase a sunk cost fallacy you [TS]

00:17:13   ever heard the term and these [TS]

00:17:15   enlightened expand point you keep [TS]

00:17:17   sending me these books about economics [TS]

00:17:19   and what what what what wait a minute [TS]

00:17:22   wait a minute [TS]

00:17:23   not what but you know no I'm like the [TS]

00:17:27   opposite of that guy now now I'm [TS]

00:17:28   suspicious of that guy the tipping point [TS]

00:17:30   guy [TS]

00:17:30   oh you were you were higher you are an [TS]

00:17:33   evangelist just hang on one minute right [TS]

00:17:36   you know what I want to get back to [TS]

00:17:37   public intellectuals and RG know there's [TS]

00:17:40   only one place in America where diamonds [TS]

00:17:41   turns out of that's my phrase that sums [TS]

00:17:45   up everything I fucking hate about this [TS]

00:17:46   stuff is some guy gets up there turns [TS]

00:17:49   out and like he's like he's discovered [TS]

00:17:51   something amazing like you know any [TS]

00:17:53   colors you want builders matter the TED [TS]

00:17:55   Talks all brother i'ma tell you start [TS]

00:17:57   i'm gonna tell you I can tell right now [TS]

00:17:59   that you are mad at TED talk i'm gonna [TS]

00:18:01   tell you a funny story i can tell you on [TS]

00:18:02   the program but it's it's it's pretty [TS]

00:18:05   fun here's the thing now [TS]

00:18:07   yes you are correct i do the right ask [TS]

00:18:08   you to do at dog know they have it and [TS]

00:18:11   Hodgman kept kept saying he was going to [TS]

00:18:13   try and get me in there he never did you [TS]

00:18:15   know I you know I would do that for him [TS]

00:18:16   you know well it's harder than it looks [TS]

00:18:19   your people in there because you know [TS]

00:18:20   it's all deranged billions in there is [TS]

00:18:22   good point it's a good point you know I [TS]

00:18:23   now people like they go to the Ted [TS]

00:18:25   what's the other ones that was a big do [TS]

00:18:27   she won the in like Switzerland the data [TS]

00:18:29   so davos Christ they'll let anybody in [TS]

00:18:33   there [TS]

00:18:34   yeah you know a friend of mine a friend [TS]

00:18:35   of my want to ask a question one time at [TS]

00:18:37   Ted and it was actually really smart and [TS]

00:18:39   make stuff she's like we wanted to ask [TS]

00:18:40   you wanted to ask questions when she did [TS]

00:18:42   it was during like a time when people [TS]

00:18:43   could make remarks about something and [TS]

00:18:45   she totally cock-blocked by cameron diaz [TS]

00:18:47   ah her question this is my friend who's [TS]

00:18:50   made a company that makes products i [TS]

00:18:52   used to use on your site for example [TS]

00:18:54   like she made something really important [TS]

00:18:56   and like she and she got caught for [TS]

00:18:58   Cameron Diaz to get up there and I don't [TS]

00:19:01   know maybe I'm not a fan of caribbean we [TS]

00:19:03   talked about this is a problematic [TS]

00:19:06   um anyway about the diamonds you can't [TS]

00:19:09   the problem is i think when your Museum [TS]

00:19:11   falls on hard times or even if you're [TS]

00:19:12   just trying to get a new prague you can [TS]

00:19:14   do things like trades like assuming that [TS]

00:19:16   you don't have a bunch of Nazi art [TS]

00:19:17   somebody wants back you've got things [TS]

00:19:19   and you hold it like if you've got to [TS]

00:19:21   say what you will about any more [TS]

00:19:22   hallways kids kind of interesting [TS]

00:19:23   project you know if you've got you [TS]

00:19:25   discover you think if we used to scratch [TS]

00:19:27   off some paint you discover you got a [TS]

00:19:29   van Gogh or something to hang onto that [TS]

00:19:30   you traded i'm just saying i don't think [TS]

00:19:32   i don't think that much currency in the [TS]

00:19:34   beanie babies of the grunge era that's [TS]

00:19:36   not gonna that's like I retain their [TS]

00:19:37   value [TS]

00:19:38   no but you know I was honestly I feel [TS]

00:19:40   that way about about all modern art [TS]

00:19:42   ok let's go look [TS]

00:19:44   but for now where can I just be clear [TS]

00:19:46   contemporary or modern art where's your [TS]

00:19:48   line for this [TS]

00:19:49   oh yeah i'm going to say any are made [TS]

00:19:51   after tonight [TS]

00:19:53   tee hee ok mm I don't know what I'm a [TS]

00:19:58   fan of Jackson Pollock i will say is [TS]

00:19:59   just one information question and this [TS]

00:20:01   is not in any way to guide the [TS]

00:20:03   discussion as you know but give any [TS]

00:20:04   fucking idea what you're talking about [TS]

00:20:06   or just be prepared to not along as you [TS]

00:20:08   talk out of your ass [TS]

00:20:09   you know I got into a huge argument at [TS]

00:20:11   the University of Waterloo every answer [TS]

00:20:13   everything which is that you know if you [TS]

00:20:16   go to if you go around Europe there are [TS]

00:20:18   there are there are monuments to world [TS]

00:20:20   war two all all around Europe and as you [TS]

00:20:23   can imagine and there and it's not just [TS]

00:20:24   burned buildings and destroyed churches [TS]

00:20:26   there monuments that artists have made [TS]

00:20:28   and there are monuments to world war one [TS]

00:20:31   also all over your in Flanders Fields [TS]

00:20:33   they're very into that in Canada they [TS]

00:20:35   are and where you are please [TS]

00:20:37   the the monuments to world war one are [TS]

00:20:39   invariably a very tall obelisks that [TS]

00:20:43   have a a bunch of figures arrayed around [TS]

00:20:47   the base i generally some some guys that [TS]

00:20:50   heroically holding up their bayonets or [TS]

00:20:54   some you know some nurses tending to the [TS]

00:20:57   wounded maybe a at the big monuments [TS]

00:21:00   have like some horses on them some guys [TS]

00:21:03   maybe somebody's holding a holding their [TS]

00:21:05   rifle aloft you know they're like [TS]

00:21:08   monuments that have been made to war for [TS]

00:21:10   a thousand years because there's [TS]

00:21:12   somebody in a tri-corner hat holding his [TS]

00:21:14   sword up and an obelisk and it says to [TS]

00:21:18   our glorious yourself you're honoring [TS]

00:21:20   your honoring the sacrifice in a very [TS]

00:21:22   dignified way of these people who ya now [TS]

00:21:25   in general world war two monuments [TS]

00:21:27   around Europe and in America tend to be [TS]

00:21:30   a giant stone doughnut on some kind of [TS]

00:21:37   ellipse and with with no words on it or [TS]

00:21:43   if there are some words on it you know [TS]

00:21:45   it's it's some like up something obscure [TS]

00:21:48   in Latin and uh and and this doughnut [TS]

00:21:52   the stone donut [TS]

00:21:54   or a stone egg uh it became this motif [TS]

00:21:58   for world war two monuments because [TS]

00:22:01   because the the world's mind had been [TS]

00:22:04   infected with the with a the plague of [TS]

00:22:07   modern art and it was thought that this [TS]

00:22:10   doughnut better represented the [TS]

00:22:12   sacrifice of however 40 million people [TS]

00:22:15   died in the war that it was so that was [TS]

00:22:18   such an incredible war and there were [TS]

00:22:20   some so many lives lost that we could [TS]

00:22:22   not represent those lives figuratively [TS]

00:22:25   the only thing that made this large [TS]

00:22:26   grant-in-aid the only thing they could [TS]

00:22:28   do it [TS]

00:22:29   the only thing that could capture our [TS]

00:22:30   imagination was this was a giant donut [TS]

00:22:33   and and holocaust monuments are even [TS]

00:22:36   worse because it's it's even more [TS]

00:22:38   inconceivable know what happened in the [TS]

00:22:40   Holocaust right and so the donut is even [TS]

00:22:42   more like generally a holocaust monument [TS]

00:22:45   is a fracture donut right a donut that's [TS]

00:22:48   been that's like kind of crack in it but [TS]

00:22:50   it could be in that case you're moving [TS]

00:22:52   into a more heavy-handed kind of [TS]

00:22:53   abstract nonsense right exactly its [TS]

00:22:55   abstract nonsense but they couldn't [TS]

00:22:56   really let the abstraction live on its [TS]

00:22:58   own and so they had to put a crack in it [TS]

00:23:00   because then they had a little bit a [TS]

00:23:03   little bit of actual realistic symbol is [TS]

00:23:06   a minute and i want you around walking [TS]

00:23:08   around Europe all these years I came [TS]

00:23:09   back to the University of Washington was [TS]

00:23:10   like I was in some seminar and I stood [TS]

00:23:13   up and he said modern artists crap at [TS]

00:23:17   all all modern artists crap and as [TS]

00:23:20   exhibit a I submit this slideshow of [TS]

00:23:23   world war two Holocaust donuts that haha [TS]

00:23:29   I find personally offensive I find that [TS]

00:23:31   you're not they do not symbolize the war [TS]

00:23:34   they do not honor the dead this is not a [TS]

00:23:37   bagel [TS]

00:23:38   oh that's a terrible thing to say no I'm [TS]

00:23:42   i'm pretty sure it's not a fractured [TS]

00:23:44   bagel [TS]

00:23:45   ah yeah okay so then you get to Vietnam [TS]

00:23:48   and what did they get they got like what [TS]

00:23:49   is a big letter V I gotta they got a [TS]

00:23:52   black letter V in a lawn but at least it [TS]

00:23:54   has names on now see how do you feel [TS]

00:23:56   about letters and words I i think you [TS]

00:23:59   know i think this started with fucking [TS]

00:24:00   Philadelphia and the big love sculpture [TS]

00:24:03   people fell back in love with words [TS]

00:24:04   there's a phrase i try to avoid actually [TS]

00:24:06   used in about words as art well words as [TS]

00:24:10   way to basically provide a giant [TS]

00:24:11   footnotes what the fucking thing means [TS]

00:24:13   did you get if you better if you get a [TS]

00:24:15   guy not a pietà exactly but the the war [TS]

00:24:18   version of a PHR one pietà you get like [TS]

00:24:21   a guy in one of those identifiable will [TS]

00:24:23   work one helmets like holding up holding [TS]

00:24:26   his body as he dies right that's [TS]

00:24:28   incredibly fucking moving can be if it's [TS]

00:24:30   sculpted well and it does not need in in [TS]

00:24:33   like giant times new roman have to say [TS]

00:24:35   sacrifice on it [TS]

00:24:36   oh right exactly well that is the [TS]

00:24:38   problem with world war one monument is [TS]

00:24:39   that they that they actually go around [TS]

00:24:42   and every panel says loyalty or finality [TS]

00:24:46   and what war one you say well yeah but I [TS]

00:24:50   mean all those I mean all called a [TS]

00:24:53   figurative art you know how reluctant to [TS]

00:24:55   talk about the Holocaust but i'm going [TS]

00:24:56   to send you a link here in the robot and [TS]

00:24:58   this is this is actually you know i can [TS]

00:25:02   write this down come back to this phrase [TS]

00:25:03   the exception that proves the rule [TS]

00:25:04   because i think that might not make any [TS]

00:25:05   sense [TS]

00:25:06   this is I assume some exception that [TS]

00:25:07   proves some rule this is a place that [TS]

00:25:09   I've been in Miami that is really moving [TS]

00:25:12   and incredibly fucking scary and freaky [TS]

00:25:15   em are you there [TS]

00:25:17   everything okay so this is called the [TS]

00:25:19   holocaust memorial of the Greater Miami [TS]

00:25:20   Jewish Federation and it is it's it's [TS]

00:25:22   weirdly well done and it is super duper [TS]

00:25:25   creepy [TS]

00:25:25   so you can see the primary figure is a i [TS]

00:25:30   don't know how many feet would you say [TS]

00:25:31   probably about a 30-foot high 31 high [TS]

00:25:33   human hand without all around and the [TS]

00:25:35   arm is like from the wrist to what would [TS]

00:25:39   be the elbow is is just all like [TS]

00:25:41   desperate skinny people clinging it [TS]

00:25:44   would you say that's pretty horrific i [TS]

00:25:46   mean there it gets it gets to the flavor [TS]

00:25:48   gets the flavor but then there's also [TS]

00:25:50   like these frozen figures they're almost [TS]

00:25:52   like Pompeii now I don't know that it's [TS]

00:25:55   so emotional that like I can see why you [TS]

00:25:58   would do that they're it but I mean in [TS]

00:25:59   that case I mean that's this gives you a [TS]

00:26:01   sense [TS]

00:26:02   it don't you say obstructing an abstract [TS]

00:26:05   way but that's very emotionally [TS]

00:26:06   compelling what I worry about is going [TS]

00:26:08   away that donors not no absolutely not i [TS]

00:26:11   mean you know eatin you [TS]

00:26:13   I'm just saying like if you get too [TS]

00:26:15   abstract with this stuff and you get in [TS]

00:26:17   you get into the donuts and in the eggs [TS]

00:26:19   and the v's I don't know he had a water [TS]

00:26:21   feature [TS]

00:26:22   I mean oh yeah water feature is nice do [TS]

00:26:25   you like water features [TS]

00:26:26   well water feature reflects the donut in [TS]

00:26:28   the sky and it causes you to really [TS]

00:26:30   really think about it [TS]

00:26:31   oh I don't know what's causing it to [TS]

00:26:33   reflect and think about it then you see [TS]

00:26:35   it reflected in the pool and you're like [TS]

00:26:36   oh right yeah even washington DC yes um [TS]

00:26:43   i have been to Washington DC [TS]

00:26:47   well you're always fucking talking about [TS]

00:26:49   the Baltics in Romania I've been all 56 [TS]

00:26:52   sounds like I've been to every [TS]

00:26:53   metropolitan area outer banks now I get [TS]

00:26:56   it [TS]

00:26:56   I am never we're married me and my [TS]

00:26:59   little dog drove around in my camper [TS]

00:27:01   truck and saw everything in America it [TS]

00:27:04   sounds like an NBC show from 1978 I am [TS]

00:27:08   Charles Kuralt now like I'll well-known [TS]

00:27:10   dog's name was like fluffy or keep it [TS]

00:27:12   was a call a Roderick and the dog i have [TS]

00:27:15   been the jet truck [TS]

00:27:17   I've been everywhere man button and say [TS]

00:27:20   Claire man you know that he is from [TS]

00:27:22   Canada who tanks know the man who wrote [TS]

00:27:25   I think wrote and sings that song and [TS]

00:27:27   you know a lot of great importance of [TS]

00:27:29   Canada some of our best Americans are [TS]

00:27:31   actually from can be very surprising [TS]

00:27:32   news from Canada's Sloan the band [TS]

00:27:33   Sloan's from Canada is there a lot of [TS]

00:27:38   great Americans from from canada and I [TS]

00:27:40   you know when I meet someone from Canada [TS]

00:27:42   I don't hold it against them because not [TS]

00:27:43   immediately could be they could be a [TS]

00:27:45   great American for all I know [TS]

00:27:46   yeah the money didn't take a look a [TS]

00:27:48   sense i'm going to get money when you [TS]

00:27:51   know what I like the coin so i have to [TS]

00:27:52   tell you I like a tuning i like i like a [TS]

00:27:54   coin [TS]

00:27:55   here's what I used to love about [TS]

00:27:56   canadian money it was a it was super [TS]

00:27:59   cheap and your dude first time i was [TS]

00:28:01   there is a dollar it was one dollar 66 [TS]

00:28:03   American to up to a loony and here's [TS]

00:28:05   what I hate about commit a canadian [TS]

00:28:07   money now it is super cheap it's just if [TS]

00:28:09   it feels really fucked up that they're [TS]

00:28:11   doing as well as us to really be wrong [TS]

00:28:13   super depressant they're nice people [TS]

00:28:15   though they're super nice people [TS]

00:28:17   here's the reason i asked like there are [TS]

00:28:18   a lot of serial killers up there no [TS]

00:28:20   really yeah you didn't know about those [TS]

00:28:24   two guys in vancouver that owned a pig [TS]

00:28:26   farm and they and they a little lady pig [TS]

00:28:29   doing lady take stuff [TS]

00:28:32   no no it wasn't lady pigs they would [TS]

00:28:34   have big parties out of their big farm [TS]

00:28:35   where they invite all the prostitutes [TS]

00:28:36   from Vancouver and then they would do [TS]

00:28:39   bad things and serial killers too and [TS]

00:28:41   they would kill these girls and then [TS]

00:28:42   feed them to the pigs and then I [TS]

00:28:45   interpretation british columbia [TS]

00:28:47   yeah it was in vancouver yeah and then [TS]

00:28:49   they would sell the bacon back to this [TS]

00:28:53   to the to the undisciplined just watch [TS]

00:28:55   your movie there's no way that is real [TS]

00:28:57   yeah that they like the unknowing [TS]

00:29:01   citizens of vancouver we're eating their [TS]

00:29:03   met because you know and canada of [TS]

00:29:05   course they have seven flavors of bacon [TS]

00:29:06   all the vacancy at a hooker bacon [TS]

00:29:09   well this is hooker bacon they had a [TS]

00:29:10   little they're selling hooker bacon to [TS]

00:29:12   him for four years because because that [TS]

00:29:14   because prostitutes were disappearing [TS]

00:29:15   off the streets of Vancouver for years [TS]

00:29:17   because it seemed like once you saw like [TS]

00:29:20   me go into a van and not come back like [TS]

00:29:22   you would think twice about going into a [TS]

00:29:23   van with a bunch foot and all these [TS]

00:29:25   creeps and these guys were creeps too [TS]

00:29:26   they were you can just look at you they [TS]

00:29:28   were creeps but they would have these [TS]

00:29:30   huge parties these huge like prostitute [TS]

00:29:32   parties prostitute junkie parties out of [TS]

00:29:34   their pictures it started out fun [TS]

00:29:36   oh I think for a lot of people it was [TS]

00:29:38   all it was always fun but so so one [TS]

00:29:41   person doesn't make it back [TS]

00:29:42   oh I get it you're just ok so I'm sorry [TS]

00:29:44   I apologize i thought it was like [TS]

00:29:46   punctually I thought they came into some [TS]

00:29:47   shoot because they thought it was a [TS]

00:29:48   party they dropped a tiger trap and they [TS]

00:29:49   end up in some hooker bacon you're [TS]

00:29:51   saying that a lot of times you're going [TS]

00:29:52   to have fun you bring your friends back [TS]

00:29:54   it's a pyramid scheme [TS]

00:29:55   yeah right you're like oh man there's [TS]

00:29:57   always dollies drugs and there's lots of [TS]

00:29:59   hookers and we got to this big farm and [TS]

00:30:01   it's a blast and then everybody else [TS]

00:30:02   goes home except for one hooker make it [TS]

00:30:06   back and then each time but nobody ever [TS]

00:30:08   puts it together because in vancouver [TS]

00:30:11   they were adopting a policy of let's [TS]

00:30:13   pretend that hookers don't exist so [TS]

00:30:15   that's not good now for a long time they [TS]

00:30:18   had that policy now I think they have [TS]

00:30:19   the whole like oh we're watching [TS]

00:30:21   Barker's now because we lost this is [TS]

00:30:24   awful you know what you're not making [TS]

00:30:26   stop no no it's terrible it wasn't very [TS]

00:30:29   long ago and the thing and and and you [TS]

00:30:33   know the northwest likes to produce [TS]

00:30:34   serial killers and so these guys in [TS]

00:30:36   Vancouver and the Green River Killer [TS]

00:30:37   were operating somewhat there what was a [TS]

00:30:41   ton of overlap but they were both out [TS]

00:30:43   roaming around at the same time and [TS]

00:30:45   there's there's some question about [TS]

00:30:47   whether there was ever whether they knew [TS]

00:30:49   each other a minute I don't know that's [TS]

00:30:51   exactly what it says that guy storm a [TS]

00:30:53   stereo just that we've got better [TS]

00:30:54   reporting tools i want this doesn't seem [TS]

00:30:57   like we go through times where suddenly [TS]

00:30:58   like you know for example turns out [TS]

00:31:00   supposedly there's a lot fewer child [TS]

00:31:02   abductions today than there were in the [TS]

00:31:03   forties per capita it's just that it's [TS]

00:31:05   heavily like over-reported I don't know [TS]

00:31:07   if that's accurate but in this case it [TS]

00:31:08   seems like we had a real Golden Age of [TS]

00:31:10   brutal serial killers in the last like [TS]

00:31:12   60 years when was that game see the [TS]

00:31:14   fifties sixties yeah fifties I think you [TS]

00:31:17   know I used to read games car you see [TS]

00:31:18   gains car was abandoned by a TMP what [TS]

00:31:24   would it take to know that Paul Island [TS]

00:31:26   has finally gone too far [TS]

00:31:28   it's the incidence rate music project [TS]

00:31:31   and science fiction museum and serial [TS]

00:31:33   killer warehouse he wants something like [TS]

00:31:35   the motor museum but like much more [TS]

00:31:36   personal something Willie I I wonder [TS]

00:31:39   about this about the the weather whether [TS]

00:31:41   there were always I mean clearly there [TS]

00:31:43   were always serial killers and mass [TS]

00:31:45   murderers right but whether or not I [TS]

00:31:49   kind of think that in a mean Jack the [TS]

00:31:51   Ripper being one example he was very [TS]

00:31:53   public but if you owned a pig farm in [TS]

00:31:56   1805 and you were abducting hookers [TS]

00:32:01   which obviously their workers in 1805 [TS]

00:32:03   because it is the oldest profession pig [TS]

00:32:05   farming no hookers okay um you could [TS]

00:32:09   always go find hookers and there were [TS]

00:32:12   always big farm and the temptation is [TS]

00:32:14   always there probably well well no I'm [TS]

00:32:16   just saying like you you have a lot to [TS]

00:32:18   take care of on a pig farm you have [TS]

00:32:19   slopping in the slapping of watering you [TS]

00:32:22   already were talking about the on the on [TS]

00:32:24   the bell curve of human being and [TS]

00:32:26   farmers farmers are busy they got a lot [TS]

00:32:28   to do they don't have time to run into [TS]

00:32:29   town and get people magazine they got a [TS]

00:32:31   really think it through they gotta have [TS]

00:32:32   something could have lunch and I'm just [TS]

00:32:33   saying I don't want I don't want to be a [TS]

00:32:35   you know [TS]

00:32:35   an insensitive here but I'm just saying [TS]

00:32:37   if you can improve your bottom line by [TS]

00:32:39   throwing some sex workers in your meat [TS]

00:32:40   I mean I would never do that oh yes when [TS]

00:32:43   you're saying that that some of their [TS]

00:32:44   motivation might be that it was cheap [TS]

00:32:46   pig food and I never say anything [TS]

00:32:47   agrarian I don't know much about it [TS]

00:32:49   I'm yeah i think it was much more than I [TS]

00:32:51   think it was what boo i think that [TS]

00:32:52   feeding it to the pigs was an [TS]

00:32:54   afterthought they did that on Deadwood [TS]

00:32:55   you know what's weird about this i'm [TS]

00:32:58   reading about Robert just right for our [TS]

00:32:59   listeners who don't have the internet [TS]

00:33:01   it's robert pickton also known as the [TS]

00:33:03   pig farmer killer and he's a he's a [TS]

00:33:06   farmer killer [TS]

00:33:07   I sure got that pretty close tonight [TS]

00:33:09   yeah I think that's a on but there's a [TS]

00:33:11   big black album and so he's 62 now he's [TS]

00:33:15   a he stole he's still doing fine he's in [TS]

00:33:17   for life but here's what's interesting [TS]

00:33:18   is number of victims six 249 that's [TS]

00:33:22   making such a big surprise 62-49 is a [TS]

00:33:25   big fucking spread it could be still be [TS]

00:33:28   some bacon out there that is fucked up [TS]

00:33:29   that is so fucked up [TS]

00:33:31   oh but I don't see I don't know I don't [TS]

00:33:33   know much about the eighteen-hundreds [TS]

00:33:34   yeah and and farmers in general today [TS]

00:33:37   starts to farming seems very scientific [TS]

00:33:38   you know but back then you know I think [TS]

00:33:41   for a lot more of yourself into it and [TS]

00:33:43   potentially a prostitute's well this is [TS]

00:33:45   the thing that they did in the old days [TS]

00:33:47   like you would have you eat it clear [TS]

00:33:50   hundred acres right and then you'd have [TS]

00:33:52   you have a three sons and one of them [TS]

00:33:56   you'd send in the art well let's say you [TS]

00:33:58   had five sons one of you send the army [TS]

00:34:00   level in one of somebody's going to a [TS]

00:34:02   couple we're gonna die right [TS]

00:34:04   sure one of them is that the gay one is [TS]

00:34:06   going to become a priest and and then [TS]

00:34:09   you've got a couple sons and so you had [TS]

00:34:11   a hundred acres now you have to give [TS]

00:34:13   each Sun 50 acres and that you know the [TS]

00:34:16   daughters like who knows what happens to [TS]

00:34:17   them they marry somebody sticks in the [TS]

00:34:19   possible way [TS]

00:34:19   yeah so then you two sons have 50 acres [TS]

00:34:22   then those guys have five sons and they [TS]

00:34:24   send the gay ones into the ministry and [TS]

00:34:25   the and 12 the army and but eventually [TS]

00:34:28   the their farms get split up and that [TS]

00:34:30   pretty soon everybody's got 20 acres and [TS]

00:34:32   then everybody's got five acres [TS]

00:34:34   hmm you know a 45 generations down the [TS]

00:34:38   road everybody's trying to make a living [TS]

00:34:39   off of these these little little cut up [TS]

00:34:42   little teeny farms [TS]

00:34:44   and and and that's kind of that that's [TS]

00:34:47   the portland oregon model right if you [TS]

00:34:49   had five acres in portland oregon you'd [TS]

00:34:51   be the king of the town because you'd be [TS]

00:34:53   making artisanal pigs and you'd be [TS]

00:34:56   feeding them artisanal prostitutes or [TS]

00:34:58   whatever it is that happens down there [TS]

00:34:59   small-batch they call it but a small [TS]

00:35:01   batch right small-batch sex workers [TS]

00:35:04   oh ok first term is sex for sex worker [TS]

00:35:06   but so then industrialized farming came [TS]

00:35:11   in and they animate and they took all [TS]

00:35:12   these farms they bought all cheap huh [TS]

00:35:15   and they they took all the fences down [TS]

00:35:17   and then they just had have robots [TS]

00:35:19   making food now almost the car goes from [TS]

00:35:21   India can't really call you literally [TS]

00:35:24   call them in bangalore it's much more [TS]

00:35:26   expensive to fly them over and feeding [TS]

00:35:28   pigs that is my voice which I voice over [TS]

00:35:30   IP which helps a lot [TS]

00:35:31   I can talk to the pigs and my name is [TS]

00:35:35   Sandra I'm enjoying volleyball uh hook [TS]

00:35:38   of bacon and here's the thing i want to [TS]

00:35:40   go in two directions if I'm a John I [TS]

00:35:42   want to get back to this up your art [TS]

00:35:44   problem if we don't pass on to move past [TS]

00:35:45   that trick sugar i'll talk about [TS]

00:35:47   whatever thoughtcrime modern art is all [TS]

00:35:49   day [TS]

00:35:50   I mean I know I'm just antagonizing [TS]

00:35:51   people but that's really one of my [TS]

00:35:53   favorite things to do [TS]

00:35:54   well I don't want to talk about this [TS]

00:35:55   diamond mine in Arkansas though you have [TS]

00:35:58   me thinking about diamonds I don't know [TS]

00:36:00   anything about the Arkansas has got a [TS]

00:36:01   time in mind well that's the only place [TS]

00:36:02   in America where there's a diamond mind [TS]

00:36:04   it's in Arkansas and you can actually go [TS]

00:36:05   there and sift through the rocks [TS]

00:36:08   yourself like like like you go to the [TS]

00:36:11   museum and look for geodes yeah where [TS]

00:36:13   you go pan for gold in the Yukon at the [TS]

00:36:15   pan for gold museum but you can go to [TS]

00:36:19   this Arkansas diamond mines the people [TS]

00:36:21   are represented by numeral for 10 for [TS]

00:36:23   gold pan for gold [TS]

00:36:25   Pat dig for diamonds but apparently some [TS]

00:36:28   very recently some guy discovered a six [TS]

00:36:31   carat yellow diamond 6 carats is a lot [TS]

00:36:33   of carrots [TS]

00:36:34   yeah at this like at this a search [TS]

00:36:38   search for yourself a diamond mine in [TS]

00:36:40   Arkansas what characters like Joe get to [TS]

00:36:42   pick your own apples kind of shit and he [TS]

00:36:44   finds expression six carat diamond I [TS]

00:36:46   think so [TS]

00:36:47   holy shit that really changes the whole [TS]

00:36:49   revenue model it's not about selling [TS]

00:36:51   t-shirts and marmalade anymore you're [TS]

00:36:52   going to some fucking Rock [TS]

00:36:54   I'm thinking every tour I do from now on [TS]

00:36:56   we're gonna wrap [TS]

00:36:57   through Arkansas and spend a day at the [TS]

00:36:59   at the diamond mine they're trying to [TS]

00:37:01   pay for the whole pay for the record you [TS]

00:37:03   know you could probably run some basic [TS]

00:37:05   figures you could do a microsoft [TS]

00:37:06   microsoft excel the computer thing you [TS]

00:37:07   could probably figure out like what what [TS]

00:37:09   the chances are shoma canceled the gala [TS]

00:37:11   cigar in the backbone of hundred-dollar [TS]

00:37:12   bills might try and fuck you you're [TS]

00:37:14   you're gonna have to balance that [TS]

00:37:15   happens in the entertainment business [TS]

00:37:16   you know if you seems to me you have a [TS]

00:37:17   very small band people keep quitting but [TS]

00:37:19   if you got enough people if you got like [TS]

00:37:21   what like Donkey you got one of those [TS]

00:37:22   like 10 person bands or you know like [TS]

00:37:24   what was the one with the Andrew Berg I [TS]

00:37:25   remember that the red band they were [TS]

00:37:27   good you see them for the cauldron hot [TS]

00:37:29   chili peppers or together they were they [TS]

00:37:31   were really good the village school in [TS]

00:37:33   the strippers will never fucking great [TS]

00:37:34   man down here about to hear a thing [TS]

00:37:37   about diamond mining if you have a [TS]

00:37:39   10-person band you literally need to [TS]

00:37:41   mine diamonds [TS]

00:37:42   oh I don't keep everybody in macro you [TS]

00:37:44   know how people smoke is this is this is [TS]

00:37:47   why you look at people like Billy Bragg [TS]

00:37:48   and jonathan coulton you go that that's [TS]

00:37:49   why those guys have so much demo rides [TS]

00:37:52   right they're going to get our backline [TS]

00:37:53   you go in there and there's already [TS]

00:41:26   know they caught up with what later they [TS]

00:41:28   called the Queen City but for a long [TS]

00:41:29   time was poor accomplice because of the [TS]

00:41:31   number of pigs pic pic butchery this [TS]

00:42:17   intellectual LARPing is there any chance [TS]

00:42:18   that a lot of what you're doing is like [TS]

00:42:21   if you meet people who are poor dear n [TS]

00:42:23   fairs or do like I look at me I'm I'm in [TS]

00:42:26   the Army of the Potomac and you like [TS]

00:42:28   they're not like they don't see them [TS]

00:42:30   actually really believe that their [TS]

00:42:32   Gettysburg they're just so just happy [TS]

00:42:34   just heavy and have authentic buttons [TS]

00:42:36   you know you don't have been to college [TS]

00:42:38   o P out of period they call it being out [TS]

00:42:40   you don't want the wrong but you know [TS]

00:42:42   what's wrong mustache so that's one of [TS]

00:42:43   the things that i hate about those [TS]

00:42:44   things wrong mustache when I when I see [TS]

00:42:46   when I see some reenactors and some guys [TS]

00:42:49   got the wrong mustache like that's not [TS]

00:42:50   the mustache they had because the [TS]

00:42:53   training issues [TS]

00:42:54   yeah right you can't just like you can't [TS]

00:42:56   just Rock any mustache [TS]

00:42:58   you can't just wear your like steampunk [TS]

00:43:00   mustache to a civil war reenactment [TS]

00:43:02   that's not how things are done it was it [TS]

00:43:05   is unnecessary brass yeah just your [TS]

00:43:08   looks like oh sure you're mr. curl your [TS]

00:43:10   mustache up or whatever but but there [TS]

00:43:12   was no there was none of that them [TS]

00:43:13   grouping this is a droopy mustache event [TS]

00:43:16   i have read a lot about this but it's my [TS]

00:43:18   understanding that that stuff that [TS]

00:43:21   there's a lot of [TS]

00:43:23   more authenticity than now going on [TS]

00:43:25   there's a lot of a lot it's a lot like [TS]

00:43:27   being at an independent record store [TS]

00:43:29   camera shop for a comic shop and let's [TS]

00:43:31   be honest a lot of comic shop it's like [TS]

00:43:32   it's like a comic shop of the tricorn [TS]

00:43:34   hat basically yeah but there's a lot of [TS]

00:43:36   like know your buttons are not aesthetic [TS]

00:43:37   you wouldn't have a zipper down to fleas [TS]

00:43:40   John I've heard that some people will [TS]

00:43:41   get fleas because they're guy would have [TS]

00:43:44   had fleas but speaking as someone who [TS]

00:43:49   has some not small experience with fleas [TS]

00:43:52   you're not you're not immune to please i [TS]

00:43:54   can set know i can say that is a really [TS]

00:43:57   stupid thing to do not give yourself [TS]

00:44:00   fleet you're not going to get a statue [TS]

00:44:02   buddy you're not gonna hear it and then [TS]

00:44:03   we're gonna do you think they have [TS]

00:44:04   make-believe memorials for people who [TS]

00:44:06   make believe died here here's here's the [TS]

00:44:08   numbers down that you don't you're [TS]

00:44:10   reflecting pool as always the number one [TS]

00:44:12   problem with civil war reenactments how [TS]

00:44:16   many how many graduate i have for this [TS]

00:44:18   there are a lot of bling whatever number [TS]

00:44:20   one problem with civil war reenactments [TS]

00:44:22   please complete problems Civil War [TS]

00:44:23   reenactments is that 99% of the soldiers [TS]

00:44:26   and civil war were 17 to 20 and [TS]

00:44:29   ninety-nine percent of Civil War [TS]

00:44:31   reenactors are 55 to 60 65 so you look [TS]

00:44:36   at your reenactment and there's all [TS]

00:44:38   these battle guys dressed like privates [TS]

00:44:41   marching you know like sweat profusely [TS]

00:44:44   sweating in the Tennessee summer [TS]

00:44:46   marching over to reenact this battle and [TS]

00:44:50   it's like there's not one single one of [TS]

00:44:52   you that looks like a civil war fighter [TS]

00:44:53   right pictures skinny tennis skinny [TS]

00:44:58   seventeen-year-old Tennesseans now are [TS]

00:45:01   all wearing white baseball caps on [TS]

00:45:03   backwards and they're trying to find the [TS]

00:45:06   nearest juggalo encampment haha they are [TS]

00:45:10   not reacting the civil war and that it [TS]

00:45:14   you know that's what you need basically [TS]

00:45:15   these federal guys should get their sons [TS]

00:45:17   like actually happened in the civil war [TS]

00:45:19   they should force there Suns to reenact [TS]

00:45:22   ok I i think i understand you're saying [TS]

00:45:24   there's something much deeper I don't [TS]

00:45:25   care about your fucking buttons or [TS]

00:45:26   dysentery [TS]

00:45:27   there's a deeper problem which is [TS]

00:45:28   there's no fucking way you would die the [TS]

00:45:31   first week now what you need to do is go [TS]

00:45:32   get your kid and compel make your kid [TS]

00:45:35   you're saying you stay back on the big [TS]

00:45:36   four [TS]

00:45:36   arm and make your kid who has both arms [TS]

00:45:38   you he joins the army of the potomac [TS]

00:45:40   right he joins the fake Army of the [TS]

00:45:42   Potomac wasn't killing gets killed by [TS]

00:45:44   General Sherman's army that's right and [TS]

00:45:46   and and that would be a true civil war [TS]

00:45:50   reenactor whoo-hoo [TS]

00:45:52   that's pretty good yeah um that's the [TS]

00:45:54   number one problem you could you just [TS]

00:45:55   stop talking with the number for his [TS]

00:45:56   problems just stuff your head them [TS]

00:45:58   mustaches running moustache if you go if [TS]

00:46:01   you go one watching some reason or no [TS]

00:46:03   sir I should they should hire me and I [TS]

00:46:06   just walked down the ramp would be like [TS]

00:46:07   no wrong wrong mustache [TS]

00:46:10   yeah you know what frankly i don't care [TS]

00:46:12   if you get that job but i would like you [TS]

00:46:14   to go down to the t-shirt barn at [TS]

00:46:15   whatever mall you have and get federal [TS]

00:46:18   mustache and maybe it was under cabinet [TS]

00:46:22   trucker cap John they're gonna think [TS]

00:46:23   that means something else because nobody [TS]

00:46:25   wears trucker captain can I can I [TS]

00:46:27   threatened to change the subject in an [TS]

00:46:28   organic way by asking you about [TS]

00:46:29   something you mentioned wants to me is [TS]

00:46:31   it true that you have a tumblr about [TS]

00:46:32   juggalos is that accurate [TS]

00:46:34   I'm i want one so badly but but a you [TS]

00:46:37   know [TS]

00:46:37   Seattle is not really just below ground [TS]

00:46:41   zero [TS]

00:46:42   you know I really think like Tennessee [TS]

00:46:43   is where juggalos that's where jugglers [TS]

00:46:45   really that's the heart of the community [TS]

00:46:47   between two became Detroit and Memphis [TS]

00:46:50   it's literally like totally kudzu [TS]

00:46:52   there's like there's like a juggalo [TS]

00:46:54   there's a vein of general that runs [TS]

00:46:56   through our nation our great nation and [TS]

00:46:58   it starts in Detroit and it ends in [TS]

00:46:59   Memphis and I can't sell like a [TS]

00:47:02   speechwriter for the worst parts of [TS]

00:47:04   Canada effort if you're in street clown [TS]

00:47:08   makeup trying to figure out is that what [TS]

00:47:09   it is [TS]

00:47:10   yeah I go and and and they're proud of [TS]

00:47:13   their proud of being repulsive and it's [TS]

00:47:16   it's it's the classic problem of the [TS]

00:47:19   people being too stupid to realize that [TS]

00:47:20   they're stupid [TS]

00:47:21   so that they're proud of the thing [TS]

00:47:23   therefore precise gambling at that [TS]

00:47:25   there's a culture dumbfuck erywhere you [TS]

00:47:27   like you could become lieutenant-colonel [TS]

00:47:28   of dumbassery like pretty easily because [TS]

00:47:30   you're respected by your peers for being [TS]

00:47:32   more into being a dumbass you don't [TS]

00:47:34   think so you think it's self-aware the [TS]

00:47:35   other some self-awareness mm seems like [TS]

00:47:38   an outsider culture i read an article [TS]

00:47:39   about this is read that article about [TS]

00:47:42   the about the jungle get together we [TS]

00:47:44   generally article about juggalos that is [TS]

00:47:46   like the Holocaust that you can stop [TS]

00:47:47   reading about i'm super fascinated by [TS]

00:47:48   the door through things [TS]

00:47:50   that kinky lady while she was performing [TS]

00:47:52   yeah yeah that's good articles a really [TS]

00:47:54   good article very good article I mean I [TS]

00:47:56   decide what I've seen I've seen a lot of [TS]

00:47:58   I've seen a lot of things in my time in [TS]

00:48:02   fact I bet every state i actually [TS]

00:48:05   actually spent spent some some quality [TS]

00:48:08   time some intimate time with the young [TS]

00:48:10   lady that had a gigolo tattoo and she [TS]

00:48:14   she claimed that it was an ironic [TS]

00:48:21   judgment that too and I had my doubts if [TS]

00:48:27   they had like is it like a logo what's [TS]

00:48:30   the joke is a gigolo tattoo looks like [TS]

00:48:31   that too is a little guy it's like you [TS]

00:48:33   remember the pearl jam 10 stick figure [TS]

00:48:36   there's little stick figure with this [TS]

00:48:38   guy holding his hands up in the air and [TS]

00:48:39   he had like dreadlocks he had dreadlock [TS]

00:48:41   hair it was a stick figure it wasn't [TS]

00:48:43   even it was just some graffito that they [TS]

00:48:46   turn into their logo the 10 logo so the [TS]

00:48:48   juggalo logo is basically that guy the [TS]

00:48:51   guy with the with some dreadlocks it's a [TS]

00:48:53   stick figure jobs running which has a [TS]

00:48:56   Rastafarian yes Chevy Cassandra alright [TS]

00:48:59   that's not realistic a meat cleaver but [TS]

00:49:01   as we clear anything so this is the [TS]

00:49:03   juggalo logo and this young lady uh [TS]

00:49:06   friend of minor am a lady friend of mine [TS]

00:49:11   with her i had she does not live in [TS]

00:49:15   though in the West she is it be clear [TS]

00:49:17   here necessarily the center of america [TS]

00:49:19   you you seem to be slightly delusional [TS]

00:49:20   about a variety of things with women [TS]

00:49:22   your life which I'm not saying it's a [TS]

00:49:23   bad thing but like what is your actual [TS]

00:49:24   relationship that you like me to show [TS]

00:49:26   too just like how what kind of lady [TS]

00:49:29   friend with the shoes roshan early fan [TS]

00:49:31   of the long winters and then in the [TS]

00:49:33   early days long winters we had we had we [TS]

00:49:37   out we would they were nice enough to [TS]

00:49:39   let us stay at their apartment huh [TS]

00:49:41   and she had a separate area that was [TS]

00:49:44   hers her room if you will which was for [TS]

00:49:47   the area that I did ya find no better [TS]

00:49:50   from the beginning i wish i would have [TS]

00:49:52   had a set of headaches are a dedicated [TS]

00:49:54   Roderick zone [TS]

00:49:55   well you know it depending on the town [TS]

00:49:58   in our early days of touring depending [TS]

00:50:00   on the town there was only [TS]

00:50:01   somebody had to sleep in the van right [TS]

00:50:03   because i'm paranoid about our van [TS]

00:50:04   grounds into I did not want to be I did [TS]

00:50:07   not be want to be one of those bands [TS]

00:50:08   that had that was like riding home and [TS]

00:50:10   saying oh should got ripped off [TS]

00:50:12   ok I hated those bands i handed them [TS]

00:50:15   because all your shit got ripped off [TS]

00:50:17   because you were stupid because you park [TS]

00:50:19   your van full of stuff on the street and [TS]

00:50:21   then everybody went in and got drunk yet [TS]

00:50:23   you love you left your equipment and a a [TS]

00:50:25   econoline in Manhattan [TS]

00:50:27   yeah orono Manhattan is probably the [TS]

00:50:29   safest place in the world but like I saw [TS]

00:50:31   it turns out they're worth of box haha [TS]

00:50:34   there's a bar here in seattle i used to [TS]

00:50:36   work at this bar the off-ramp [TS]

00:50:38   yep and the grunge museum and the crunch [TS]

00:50:40   museum right and people would play the [TS]

00:50:41   show they would load their stuff out [TS]

00:50:43   into the band and this bar was like on a [TS]

00:50:45   deserted Street next to a freeway and [TS]

00:50:48   then they would all come back inside and [TS]

00:50:49   and drink like four beers each such [TS]

00:50:52   three thirty in the morning they've got [TS]

00:50:54   a they got a fucking pinata full [TS]

00:50:56   offenders like sitting in a parking lot [TS]

00:50:58   yeah and then they would come outside [TS]

00:50:59   and all they had to do is leave it [TS]

00:51:00   unattended for 20 minutes I mean what [TS]

00:51:02   these guys would swoop in break the lock [TS]

00:51:04   on the van and it would be it'd be empty [TS]

00:51:06   like yeah [TS]

00:51:08   all you have to do is turn around and [TS]

00:51:09   not leave a guy out there seriously so [TS]

00:51:11   we have sample we built a lexan people [TS]

00:51:14   that's right we built a bed in our van [TS]

00:51:16   and we just never left it unattended and [TS]

00:51:19   some in some towns the fact that one guy [TS]

00:51:23   could sleep in the bed in the pan ended [TS]

00:51:26   up being like that guy was the king that [TS]

00:51:29   night because we were sleeping there was [TS]

00:51:31   one time [TS]

00:51:32   oh my god you slept with these peoples [TS]

00:51:34   house and other sinks were other sinks [TS]

00:51:38   had clogged but they hadn't stopped [TS]

00:51:41   putting dirty dishes and and like [TS]

00:51:44   pouring their beer into the sink so it's [TS]

00:51:46   like stillwater like every sink was [TS]

00:51:48   absolutely filled to the brim with [TS]

00:51:51   Blackwater and you know there's a [TS]

00:51:54   there's a layer of three inches of a cat [TS]

00:51:57   vomit on everything and we pulled up to [TS]

00:52:00   this thing went inside and then the the [TS]

00:52:01   house was dim right dimly lit and [TS]

00:52:05   everybody pours into the house like yeah [TS]

00:52:06   we're partying we're having some [TS]

00:52:08   after-show party with these people and I [TS]

00:52:10   got to the top of the stairs and I [TS]

00:52:11   looked left and I looked right and i saw [TS]

00:52:13   in all the corner [TS]

00:52:14   terms of the hallway like that that like [TS]

00:52:18   skin flakes and pubic hairs had [TS]

00:52:22   accumulated in like little piles so that [TS]

00:52:25   you could almost if you were if you were [TS]

00:52:27   a mouse on a skateboard gonna Jam Trucks [TS]

00:52:30   juggle a tensile they call it [TS]

00:52:32   oh and I got to the top of the stairs [TS]

00:52:34   and I was like hey you guys guess what [TS]

00:52:35   I'm sleeping in the van tonight and i [TS]

00:52:38   was i was outside all comfortable in my [TS]

00:52:40   happy little fan while these guys were [TS]

00:52:43   being bitten by fleas and probably if [TS]

00:52:46   there hadn't been a group of us one of [TS]

00:52:48   them would ended up in pig bacon [TS]

00:52:49   look look for LARPing there now anyway [TS]

00:52:53   so this girl this this jungle sighs [TS]

00:52:55   she's got out she wasn't she claims not [TS]

00:52:57   to be a juggler she claims to be an [TS]

00:52:58   ironic juggalo appreciator this is a [TS]

00:53:01   long time ago 24 she was my first [TS]

00:53:04   introduction to juggle ilysm I I don't [TS]

00:53:09   understand tattoos and I and I have to [TS]

00:53:11   say now I really really don't understand [TS]

00:53:12   ironic tattoos for ya [TS]

00:53:15   did you get the thing essentially i used [TS]

00:53:16   to have a circle jerk shirt had this guy [TS]

00:53:18   scan on it and it's it looks oddly [TS]

00:53:20   fingers easy skankin he certainly was [TS]

00:53:23   not but it's weird it makes you realize [TS]

00:53:25   the juggalo logo looks a little bit like [TS]

00:53:27   a cross between the circle jerk skanky [TS]

00:53:29   guy and and and a swastika is going to [TS]

00:53:34   have swastik elements but look at the [TS]

00:53:35   program 10 logo [TS]

00:53:37   ok let's get on this plastic ality is [TS]

00:53:38   that what you call it has it has a [TS]

00:53:39   little plastic ality but so does the [TS]

00:53:42   Circle Jerks guy for that my favorite [TS]

00:53:44   Busby Berkeley dance sequence and the [TS]

00:53:45   Circle Jerks guy is also happens to be a [TS]

00:53:47   skinhead well yeah it's from like LA or [TS]

00:53:50   things from like you know the valley [TS]

00:53:51   maybe you're saying like use a peaceful [TS]

00:53:52   skimmer he's no no these are great for [TS]

00:53:54   the chorus hardcore show I ever went to [TS]

00:53:57   was a circle jerk show and it scared the [TS]

00:53:59   living shit out of me right let's go as [TS]

00:54:01   kids kids dancing around that little [TS]

00:54:03   circle in 1986 with some scary stuff [TS]

00:54:05   I mean it was violent scary stuff I did [TS]

00:54:07   that I did that quite a bit that stuff [TS]

00:54:09   that's lame answer [TS]

00:54:10   yeah are you Welsh you should probably [TS]

00:54:12   be Welsh I'm Walsh I could see that was [TS]

00:54:16   it don't tell me something city show [TS]

00:54:17   Welshman two doors and one [TS]

00:54:18   self-destruction you always know which [TS]

00:54:19   will take even when I was when I was [TS]

00:54:22   that age I this is I i only know it now [TS]

00:54:27   in retrospect at the time I didn't [TS]

00:54:29   realize this but I honestly could only [TS]

00:54:32   feel things in that in the absolute most [TS]

00:54:37   extremist sense so if I was feeling bad [TS]

00:54:41   food only way i could really connect [TS]

00:54:43   with feeling bad was that I would like [TS]

00:54:46   to fall I would belly flop on the floor [TS]

00:54:49   so hard that i would shake glasses off [TS]

00:54:52   of counters and stuff we like the [TS]

00:54:55   applicator just growing don't know it [TS]

00:54:57   was just a just when I got into my late [TS]

00:54:59   teens I had suppress my emotions for so [TS]

00:55:02   many years that the only way i could [TS]

00:55:05   feel emotions was to basically I was [TS]

00:55:07   never I didn't cut myself I just want it [TS]

00:55:10   i just went into your night off i went [TS]

00:55:13   to punk shows and i flailed around and a [TS]

00:55:16   and punch people and they punch me that [TS]

00:55:20   was that was one of the ways in which i [TS]

00:55:22   experienced emotion i just sent you [TS]

00:55:24   something a link for something called [TS]

00:55:25   sensory processing disorder [TS]

00:55:27   I think you might I think you might have [TS]

00:55:29   gotten that at some point you're 20 some [TS]

00:55:30   kids have this today it's I think it [TS]

00:55:32   might be on the spectrum user [TS]

00:55:33   headbangers right they bang their heads [TS]

00:55:35   are like little kids you have to run [TS]

00:55:36   into things [TS]

00:55:37   yeah i was me that was when I was me but [TS]

00:55:39   it took many years to develop I did I [TS]

00:55:41   wasn't like it as a kid how to get [TS]

00:55:42   started [TS]

00:55:43   well i suppress my emotions i was one of [TS]

00:55:45   those i was a modern kid that was like [TS]

00:55:47   oh I'm fine I'm fine you suppress your [TS]

00:55:50   emotions and fine I'm fine until when [TS]

00:55:52   until I was in my twenties until I was [TS]

00:56:00   in my late twenties actually in my early [TS]

00:56:04   twenties i was still suppressing my [TS]

00:56:05   emotions really not what I say [TS]

00:56:08   expressing my emotions I mean all of my [TS]

00:56:10   emotions all the time I don't I had I [TS]

00:56:14   had had I only one like visible [TS]

00:56:18   expression of emotion and that was that [TS]

00:56:22   I would that I would get so that [TS]

00:56:26   basically anything if I felt anything [TS]

00:56:28   extremely and i'm not even extreme [TS]

00:56:31   happiness by the only way I could [TS]

00:56:33   express was to go sit in the corner and [TS]

00:56:35   stare at the floor [TS]

00:56:38   that's not funny but that wasn't funny [TS]

00:56:41   at all [TS]

00:56:41   I would go sit in the corner and stare [TS]

00:56:42   at the floor sometimes for hours and [TS]

00:56:44   that's when you will need that was angry [TS]

00:56:45   that was sad when I was not actually [TS]

00:56:47   clear that's not when you couldn't feel [TS]

00:56:48   an emotion that's when you felt it [TS]

00:56:50   strongly [TS]

00:56:51   that's when I was really like feeling it [TS]

00:56:53   i would go stare at the floor of the of [TS]

00:56:55   the rest of the time emotions made no I [TS]

00:56:57   had no I i had no contact with them and [TS]

00:57:01   then it is why I went through a very [TS]

00:57:03   long period where people thought it was [TS]

00:57:04   a real asshole but not not not not 30 [TS]

00:57:08   days of rest emotions period but during [TS]

00:57:10   that period immediately afterwards I was [TS]

00:57:12   like you know what I need to feel I need [TS]

00:57:14   to start feeling emotion as Fisher's [TS]

00:57:16   developed and I had no I had no idea how [TS]

00:57:20   to do it [TS]

00:57:21   I had no idea how to do it in a socially [TS]

00:57:23   acceptable way so i would feel these [TS]

00:57:25   emotions and I would just like go mad [TS]

00:57:27   and and it was a little bit scary [TS]

00:57:30   because of course I had grown up I was [TS]

00:57:32   very big and I was alright and I had a [TS]

00:57:34   very fierce look that I practiced for [TS]

00:57:37   many years of not feeling things [TS]

00:57:39   wow so when I did suddenly have an [TS]

00:57:41   emotion boy it was a it was terrorizing [TS]

00:57:43   now I'm I'm much for I'm I've been [TS]

00:57:47   working on it for a long time now i have [TS]

00:57:48   emotions all the time I'm having one [TS]

00:57:50   right now who can give me a rough idea [TS]

00:57:52   that sort of a knot in my stomach with a [TS]

00:57:55   little bit of nausea [TS]

00:57:56   uh-huh and it's happiness maybe said [TS]

00:57:58   don't you I'm still a little bit just a [TS]

00:58:01   little bit unclear on well how emotions [TS]

00:58:03   get it felt you should get some faygo I [TS]

00:58:06   should you know what i should do I [TS]

00:58:07   should now that I'm in my forties and I [TS]

00:58:10   have like basically injured every every [TS]

00:58:13   single limb in my body now I should go [TS]

00:58:15   get in a mud bath with a bunch of 20 [TS]

00:58:17   year-old Tennesseans and really let my [TS]

00:58:21   feelings come out [TS]

00:58:23   no I don't think so how do you have a [TS]

00:58:25   culture like that i mean like one thing [TS]

00:58:27   I'm I always admire honesty I always [TS]

00:58:29   admire let's just say i'm very [TS]

00:58:30   interested in outside our culture's i'm [TS]

00:58:32   very interested in people he has won one [TS]

00:58:34   of the few good things about the [TS]

00:58:35   internet and potentially deadly and [TS]

00:58:37   dangerous things you can find people who [TS]

00:58:39   are into the same thing that you're into [TS]

00:58:41   was great i think anytime you have [TS]

00:58:42   community people who feel adrift they [TS]

00:58:44   can meet people like what they like I [TS]

00:58:45   mean it's easy to make fun of but it's [TS]

00:58:47   gets kinda cool i mean sometimes you [TS]

00:58:49   make fun of [TS]

00:58:49   yeah women sometimes you end up you know [TS]

00:58:51   on a ranch like you know clicking your [TS]

00:58:53   guts and stuff but sometimes sometimes [TS]

00:58:57   showed up at comic-con walking around [TS]

00:58:59   just like in claiming that you claim to [TS]

00:59:01   like it there [TS]

00:59:02   I don't like they say justice bokeh [TS]

00:59:04   effect about i did like it there [TS]

00:59:06   you know i was just as both fed so [TS]

00:59:10   nobody could tell you I was always [TS]

00:59:12   amazed that people who dress is an [TS]

00:59:14   extremely minor character that's the [TS]

00:59:16   ones i really admire yeah those are the [TS]

00:59:18   geniuses in fact you know what we got [TS]

00:59:20   some fan mail the other day did we [TS]

00:59:22   we got some family from we have a way to [TS]

00:59:24   receive fan mail [TS]

00:59:25   well a listener in Germany it's already [TS]

00:59:30   funny sentence packages to Barsoom [TS]

00:59:34   records my record label forwarded the [TS]

00:59:38   packages to me and I took the liberty of [TS]

00:59:40   opening your present is a nice thing [TS]

00:59:45   there is it also my present was a book [TS]

00:59:48   with an iggy pop on the cover and it was [TS]

00:59:52   a collection of short reviews of the 315 [TS]

00:59:58   best song [TS]

00:59:59   [Music] [TS]

00:59:59   [Music] [TS]

01:00:00   in the world in his it rock and roll [TS]

01:00:03   5315 best rock and roll songs nice it's [TS]

01:00:07   a book you know that you keep in the [TS]

01:00:08   bathroom when you thumb through and [TS]

01:00:10   you're like oh right I agree that that's [TS]

01:00:13   something by the seasons in the sun by [TS]

01:00:15   Carrie Jack's right great song [TS]

01:00:17   I'm gonna go check and see if it's in [TS]

01:00:19   the present for you was an action figure [TS]

01:00:23   it still in the original packaging of [TS]

01:00:27   course i have not i'm not one MIB it is [TS]

01:00:31   an action figure from the movie wall-e [TS]

01:00:33   now and it is the minor character of the [TS]

01:00:40   robot washer mao mode the robot washer [TS]

01:00:44   that's my daughter's favorite and [TS]

01:00:46   probably my favorite i love mo oh my god [TS]

01:00:49   that's so sweet it's on literally on my [TS]

01:00:51   Amazon wish list maybe that's where they [TS]

01:00:53   saw it [TS]

01:00:53   our fair our fans in Germany sent you a [TS]

01:00:57   memo [TS]

01:00:58   oh my god what you have here it's right [TS]

01:01:01   next to your cello and I got your nausea [TS]

01:01:03   not I feel terrible but we said about [TS]

01:01:05   Germany no no internal they had a way to [TS]

01:01:07   get us things [TS]

01:01:08   Germany's fine they can take it you know [TS]

01:01:10   the Germans are used to being cheese [TS]

01:01:11   they like pastry don't think they like [TS]

01:01:14   certain pastries they like they like [TS]

01:01:16   pastries with the with the poppy seeds [TS]

01:01:20   on glossy street obviously pastries but [TS]

01:01:22   yet again cake they like cake in Germany [TS]

01:01:24   shake you love cake you know they like [TS]

01:01:27   bacon austria through in Germany they [TS]

01:01:30   let bread with mustard food sounds [TS]

01:01:34   hearty either heart EP you like [TS]

01:01:36   literally like toast with honey that's [TS]

01:01:37   not dissimilar like toast with honey I [TS]

01:01:39   you know I was thinking the other day in [TS]

01:01:42   all the gas stations in Germany they saw [TS]

01:01:44   these hot dogs which they call sausages [TS]

01:01:48   are versed with whom I saw these really [TS]

01:01:51   long sausages make the comically huh [TS]

01:01:55   well I get a perm like an atomic long I [TS]

01:01:58   mean they have these that they have [TS]

01:01:59   these jars these glass jars at every gas [TS]

01:02:02   station in German like the eggs is like [TS]

01:02:04   that kind of thing yeah yeah it's like [TS]

01:02:06   it's like a hard-boiled egg next to the [TS]

01:02:07   bar except it's a glass jar filled with [TS]

01:02:09   like hot dog water [TS]

01:02:11   and it has all these these like 18 inch [TS]

01:02:15   long sausages [TS]

01:02:16   oh but and you go and get one of these [TS]

01:02:19   things and then they give you a role to [TS]

01:02:22   go with this awesome but the role is the [TS]

01:02:26   size of a baseball [TS]

01:02:29   so you have this 18 inches sausage and [TS]

01:02:31   then this baseball-sized role and I for [TS]

01:02:37   the life of me I mean I've been there [TS]

01:02:39   I've been there dozens of times and I [TS]

01:02:42   love these these versts but i do not [TS]

01:02:46   understand how they're meant to be [TS]

01:02:48   consumed [TS]

01:02:50   I don't know if you hold the hot dog in [TS]

01:02:51   one hand and the role in the other and [TS]

01:02:53   you take a bite out of one of the Bible [TS]

01:02:55   yeah I think you have to alternate [TS]

01:02:56   winner ends or do you do you cut the [TS]

01:02:59   worst into quarters you cut down [TS]

01:03:01   lengthwise and then in half and you [TS]

01:03:03   could you make up just a small incision [TS]

01:03:05   and fold it to make a triple-dog mm says [TS]

01:03:08   here and just just quickly I 18 inches [TS]

01:03:10   is 45.7 centimeters you three times and [TS]

01:03:14   rivers 945-10 reverse it sounds to me [TS]

01:03:16   like and he said he said the man was [TS]

01:03:17   approximately six inches right which [TS]

01:03:20   would be what than 15 centimeters you it [TS]

01:03:22   seems to me and by the way that is the [TS]

01:03:24   worst would be eight and a half credit [TS]

01:03:26   card with right little this is our I [TS]

01:03:32   thought we were going to quote your [TS]

01:03:33   records [TS]

01:03:33   you're allowed to your the art or so [TS]

01:03:35   what you're saying is don't want to or [TS]

01:03:37   could actually you can actually fold [TS]

01:03:38   this versed in thirds and put it in the [TS]

01:03:41   bomb can actually he's got a lot of [TS]

01:03:43   rules to get a lot of rules about a lot [TS]

01:03:44   of things they do you know we should get [TS]

01:03:46   into some of them but I've been learning [TS]

01:03:47   a lot about things that are illegal in [TS]

01:03:48   Germany and and maybe first folding is [TS]

01:03:50   not so maybe something that's frowned [TS]

01:03:52   upon [TS]

01:03:52   I couldn't tell you used in these gas [TS]

01:03:54   stations and everybody that's in there [TS]

01:03:55   you know the Germans are there they're [TS]

01:03:57   not making a lot of eye contact actually [TS]

01:03:59   sitting on gas stations the Germans [TS]

01:04:01   everybody's sitting around this gas [TS]

01:04:02   station eating these worst and I've been [TS]

01:04:04   watching them trying to figure out like [TS]

01:04:05   what the way to do it is everybody's got [TS]

01:04:07   a different method fucking lucky nuria's [TS]

01:04:09   it's like eating oreos it maybe it's the [TS]

01:04:12   German oreo is a is a hot dog in a bit a [TS]

01:04:15   small bun long hot dog in a small button [TS]

01:04:17   that's the German or al [TS]

01:04:20   that whole like eating out of a jar I [TS]

01:04:22   mean it's such an obvious joke like a [TS]

01:04:24   Simpsons thing but like I have never in [TS]

01:04:26   you know and I John we've talked i mean [TS]

01:04:28   i've eaten a lot of shit from 7-11 I'm [TS]

01:04:30   not like actual literal shit like I've [TS]

01:04:32   had some very bad things from the 7-11 [TS]

01:04:34   never had any desire to reach my arm and [TS]

01:04:37   is a brine or vinegar what's giving [TS]

01:04:39   sense of what's up [TS]

01:04:40   okay i'm sorry i'm being reductive here [TS]

01:04:42   load i'm doing the intellectual LARPing [TS]

01:04:44   I don't like let me ask it a question [TS]

01:04:45   John to your knowledge first of all have [TS]

01:04:47   you ever eaten eggs out of the jar in a [TS]

01:04:49   fast food place [TS]

01:04:50   no but i have eaten a jalapeno pepper [TS]

01:04:52   out of the jar huh i I've got I I you [TS]

01:04:57   know I'm very uncomfortable as you know [TS]

01:04:58   I'm very uncomfortable with open [TS]

01:05:00   containers of of food any kind of salad [TS]

01:05:02   bar type scenario ever since nine eleven [TS]

01:05:04   I can't stop thinking about it with my [TS]

01:05:07   legs [TS]

01:05:08   not at all no no i mean i like i like [TS]

01:05:10   scrambled eggs a cake digs but I don't [TS]

01:05:12   want me to exile make good eggs [TS]

01:05:14   I don't like a hard-boiled egg not at [TS]

01:05:16   all and I don't like a brined and his [TS]

01:05:18   people way overcooked their eggs [TS]

01:05:20   including my wife i have a7 method [TS]

01:05:22   either method first she doesn't listen [TS]

01:05:24   to this podcast I never she's just she [TS]

01:05:26   keeps thinking that she's gonna listen [TS]

01:05:28   to the rubber girl episode but is that [TS]

01:05:31   the one that's the one you're going to [TS]

01:05:32   introduce her to right let's start over [TS]

01:05:34   so start at the top right let's give a [TS]

01:05:36   revolver [TS]

01:05:36   I'm saying hey honey on like this [TS]

01:05:40   darling 12 will get back to them all [TS]

01:05:42   right that down for later but i do have [TS]

01:05:43   a bulletproof a cooking method but ok so [TS]

01:05:46   you've had what did you see I saw this [TS]

01:05:48   on the internet yeah there somebody [TS]

01:05:50   saying the actual best way to make a [TS]

01:05:52   hard-boiled egg is not to boil it all [TS]

01:05:53   but to put them in the oven to bake the [TS]

01:05:57   egg turns out in the oven [TS]

01:06:00   have you considered this i had not but [TS]

01:06:02   that would not be boiling [TS]

01:06:04   well no but it would be i mean the egg [TS]

01:06:07   probably would be boiling inside itself [TS]

01:06:09   you know the best way to cook cook fried [TS]

01:06:11   bacon is slowbro staying well you know [TS]

01:06:14   here's what you do you get you get a [TS]

01:06:16   rolling boil right this might be [TS]

01:06:17   starting a great club kilbourne the [TS]

01:06:19   witness at the Daily Show guy anyway the [TS]

01:06:20   New York Times guy billboard [TS]

01:06:22   ok thank you i was actually on his show [TS]

01:06:24   the craig kilborn show when I was in RB [TS]

01:06:26   danger [TS]

01:06:27   no kidding you put that out there i [TS]

01:06:30   think a harbinger playing sad sweetheart [TS]

01:06:32   of the rodeo on the great class [TS]

01:06:34   Jerry's on and it was my first time ever [TS]

01:06:36   playing the bass through an amplifier [TS]

01:06:39   you're kidding what outcome on I don't [TS]

01:06:42   you don't believe that late late show [TS]

01:06:44   with craig oh my god we were so we [TS]

01:06:47   searched and you're right in the [TS]

01:06:48   thumbnail John you were not loose shirt [TS]

01:06:50   I see your face and I was the keyboard [TS]

01:06:52   player in the band right and Aaron [TS]

01:06:55   Hoffman the bass player of harvey danger [TS]

01:06:56   got sick what we want we got very sick [TS]

01:06:59   nice guy and he had to go home and we [TS]

01:07:02   were at the airport at Reagan National [TS]

01:07:03   Airport in Washington DC where I have [TS]

01:07:06   been multiple times and we're standing [TS]

01:07:10   the airport errands like I gotta go I [TS]

01:07:12   gotta go home I gotta go to the hospital [TS]

01:07:13   and he did he went to the hospital would [TS]

01:07:16   have flu and pneumonia [TS]

01:07:17   haha poor aaron he's such a good guy [TS]

01:07:19   he's a wonderful man and a great [TS]

01:07:21   musician whose we and that's all they're [TS]

01:07:23   good and yes i agree but so we're [TS]

01:07:28   standing at the airport and then wewe [TS]

01:07:30   we're we're waiting to get on an [TS]

01:07:32   airplane to go to Los Angeles to play on [TS]

01:07:34   the craig kilborn show and the bass [TS]

01:07:36   player like basically walks across the [TS]

01:07:38   airport to a different airline and puts [TS]

01:07:41   credit card down and is on an airplane [TS]

01:07:42   20 minutes later and is gone like poof [TS]

01:07:46   and so we're standing there sitting on [TS]

01:07:49   our guitar cases and the the the bands [TS]

01:07:51   like what are we going to do we gotta [TS]

01:07:52   cancel this show and talking back and [TS]

01:07:55   forth and then they all kind of look at [TS]

01:07:57   me at once and they're like could you [TS]

01:07:58   play the bass forty-second Street get [TS]

01:08:00   out there kid and I was like ye sure [TS]

01:08:03   although i had never played the bass has [TS]

01:08:06   got some fruity changes on it doesn't it [TS]

01:08:09   is a senior straightforward and the net [TS]

01:08:11   is like a lead guitar player whose own [TS]

01:08:13   is just playing the bass the key is his [TS]

01:08:16   bass lines are not easy to hide a lot [TS]

01:08:18   guy [TS]

01:08:19   well and just like he plays through [TS]

01:08:21   distortion box he plays like anyplace [TS]

01:08:23   melodies so I'm like I can do this and [TS]

01:08:26   they got the business before nine eleven [TS]

01:08:28   so they got the base out of the base [TS]

01:08:30   case it put it in my hand and they said [TS]

01:08:33   carry this on the airplane [TS]

01:08:35   listen to the song on your headphones [TS]

01:08:36   and learning while we fly across the [TS]

01:08:39   country in a plane seat so I'm sitting [TS]

01:08:41   in the back of this airplane with this [TS]

01:08:43   because I walk on the airplane with the [TS]

01:08:45   base and they're like [TS]

01:08:46   can we help you put that in an overhead [TS]

01:08:47   compartment and I said lady I'm supposed [TS]

01:08:51   to be on national television tomorrow [TS]

01:08:52   and I did I have never played this [TS]

01:08:54   instrument before so you are not taking [TS]

01:08:56   you're not touching this guitar i'm [TS]

01:08:58   gonna have this with me and they put me [TS]

01:09:00   in a seat in the back where there was [TS]

01:09:01   nobody sitting next to me which again [TS]

01:09:03   does not happen anymore and I spent the [TS]

01:09:06   whole plane flight with this base in my [TS]

01:09:08   hand and listening to the song we landed [TS]

01:09:10   and there was a limo to pick us up and i [TS]

01:09:13   sat in a limo with the base and my [TS]

01:09:15   headphones now we got to the hotel and i [TS]

01:09:18   stayed up basically all night learning [TS]

01:09:20   basically learning to play the bass my [TS]

01:09:22   fingers were all blistery and and read [TS]

01:09:26   and I was like man and in the morning I [TS]

01:09:28   woke up did it again [TS]

01:09:31   listen to song playing the bass the limo [TS]

01:09:33   came to pick us up took us to the craig [TS]

01:09:34   kilborn show whole way there practicing [TS]

01:09:37   and we walk in they walk us onto the [TS]

01:09:40   stage and the guy there's a guy standing [TS]

01:09:43   there he hands me a cable i plug it in [TS]

01:09:45   to the base and go full bump and that's [TS]

01:09:49   the first time i've ever played a [TS]

01:09:50   amplified base and then I turn and [TS]

01:09:53   there's a man saying who goes we're on [TS]

01:09:56   in five four three two and then we start [TS]

01:10:00   playing the song and i have I had never [TS]

01:10:02   played it with a band i had never played [TS]

01:10:04   an amplified bass guitar and that is the [TS]

01:10:07   that is the version of said sweetheart [TS]

01:10:10   of the rodeo you'll see on the internet [TS]

01:10:12   on the craig kilborn scared watching how [TS]

01:10:14   to go it went great because i was fueled [TS]

01:10:17   by I had massive waves of adrenaline [TS]

01:10:21   right so I'm just like well and not only [TS]

01:10:24   am I not only playing the bass but i'm [TS]

01:10:26   also singing harmony parts which I had [TS]

01:10:29   not been practicing right i think is so [TS]

01:10:33   much like a dream from junior high it [TS]

01:10:35   was crazy [TS]

01:10:36   I I used to sing harmony parts from [TS]

01:10:38   behind the keyboard but as i was [TS]

01:10:40   learning the bass part i forgot that i [TS]

01:10:41   also had all these singing parts and [TS]

01:10:44   then once I was out there and we were [TS]

01:10:45   playing the song i was playing the bass [TS]

01:10:47   i just started singing my harmony parts [TS]

01:10:49   too because i was fueled by such a [TS]

01:10:52   massive adrenaline way and I went fine i [TS]

01:10:56   went great [TS]

01:10:57   um but then also we're after the show [TS]

01:11:00   we're in the green room and I'm coming [TS]

01:11:01   down like off of a you know a thousand [TS]

01:11:04   waves of cocaine power of having just [TS]

01:11:08   done that made my base debut on national [TS]

01:11:11   television and everybody looks mean [TS]

01:11:13   they're like well you know our next [TS]

01:11:15   shows in buffalo in two days can you [TS]

01:11:16   learn the rest of the set [TS]

01:11:18   can you learn the whole set on the base [TS]

01:11:21   and I was like yes I totally can and so [TS]

01:11:28   I spent the next two days like floor [TS]

01:11:30   again on an airplane flying to buffalo [TS]

01:11:32   in a hotel in Buffalo learning every [TS]

01:11:35   song and in the Army Ranger said and you [TS]

01:11:39   know the first night was pretty rough [TS]

01:11:42   the second night was better and by the [TS]

01:11:46   third night I felt like yeah I've got it [TS]

01:11:48   i'll i just learned 15 songs on [TS]

01:11:52   instrument I've never played for my [TS]

01:11:53   hands were just every night were just [TS]

01:11:55   covered in blood because i had and i [TS]

01:11:58   haven't been able to develop any [TS]

01:11:59   calluses it was just I just shredded my [TS]

01:12:02   fingers and after the third show I was [TS]

01:12:04   like I got it and I quit practicing and [TS]

01:12:09   that night I went out had some food in a [TS]

01:12:11   restaurant watched a little TV and the [TS]

01:12:13   hotel room went to sleep woke up the [TS]

01:12:15   next day feeling good went for a walk [TS]

01:12:18   and then we went to the show and I had [TS]

01:12:21   no recollection of any of the songs i [TS]

01:12:25   could not remember the first note of any [TS]

01:12:28   one of the 15 songs and walked out on [TS]

01:12:31   stage somewhere in Pennsylvania was just [TS]

01:12:33   like uh nothin it had I stopped [TS]

01:12:39   practicing and it was kept in my skit [TS]

01:12:43   was kept in my ram was kept in my rom [TS]

01:12:47   never wrote to disk it never wrote the [TS]

01:12:49   desk it was just in it was just there in [TS]

01:12:53   flash memory and then it was all gone [TS]

01:12:56   and i had to basically had to start at [TS]

01:12:59   the start and andrey learn how all the [TS]

01:13:02   songs went again that night so that by [TS]

01:13:05   the show the following day I kind of had [TS]

01:13:08   it all back [TS]

01:13:09   but there's one show in pencil and thank [TS]

01:13:11   god this is before people had camera [TS]

01:13:13   phones there's one show in Pennsylvania [TS]

01:13:15   with where i was out there just thrown [TS]

01:13:18   my biggest bass shapes and basically was [TS]

01:13:22   improvising improvised soloing over the [TS]

01:13:26   over the entire so you can remember what [TS]

01:13:28   key it's in and like just paying out on [TS]

01:13:30   the route a little bit odd [TS]

01:13:32   it's gonna look I look over the guitar [TS]

01:13:33   player and he'd be declaring at me and I [TS]

01:13:36   was just like what is the note was [TS]

01:13:38   Sean's response you know Sean Sean he's [TS]

01:13:42   a pro he's a pro he's the frontman right [TS]

01:13:44   so he's out at the front of the stage [TS]

01:13:45   he's trying to put on a show and that he [TS]

01:13:47   was used to the band behind him being a [TS]

01:13:49   little chaotic so this this wasn't the [TS]

01:13:52   problem [TS]

01:13:53   probably that shown Pennsylvania where I [TS]

01:13:54   didn't remember any of the notes [TS]

01:13:56   probably wasn't even the worst harvey [TS]

01:13:57   danger she'll probably in the top with [TS]

01:14:01   nothing i'm leaving with or without you [TS]

01:14:04   yeah yeah yeah i mean their thirst shows [TS]

01:14:07   where I wasn't even in the band that [TS]

01:14:08   probably rivaled at 44 [TS]

01:14:11   no I mean certainly number of people on [TS]

01:14:13   stage who don't know what they're doing [TS]

01:14:16   I don't think it was even in the top ten [TS]

01:14:17   be in the audience for any of this hi i [TS]

01:14:20   saw some harvey danger shows before i [TS]

01:14:22   was in the band some that were [TS]

01:14:24   miraculous some that were absolutely on [TS]

01:14:26   fire and some were they were truly [TS]

01:14:28   miraculous in another way and then so [TS]

01:14:34   what good did you get back at Sean later [TS]

01:14:35   by make him sleep in the van [TS]

01:14:37   well Sean realized as everyone did [TS]

01:14:40   pretty early but when we first started [TS]

01:14:42   going on tour in because it don't know [TS]

01:14:43   you you better hide Shawna Nelson in the [TS]

01:14:46   long winter by singer harvey danger in [TS]

01:14:49   your apartment later became the long [TS]

01:14:50   winters keyboard player and backing [TS]

01:14:51   singer [TS]

01:14:52   and like having like them apples and [TS]

01:14:56   take that take that [TS]

01:14:58   yeah the say hello to the new boss same [TS]

01:15:00   as the old boss but it but at the [TS]

01:15:04   beginning of those early tours there was [TS]

01:15:06   a lot of resistance from people to sleep [TS]

01:15:08   in the family i don't want to leave and [TS]

01:15:09   I want to sleep in the hotel room and so [TS]

01:15:12   I was like all right also in the van you [TS]

01:15:13   know you guys double up in some bed in a [TS]

01:15:16   super 8 motel but then people realized [TS]

01:15:19   that now they're young guys they're most [TS]

01:15:22   of the guy [TS]

01:15:22   well everybody else in the band besides [TS]

01:15:23   me was in their twenties and they want a [TS]

01:15:26   little privacy you have compulsive [TS]

01:15:28   masturbator in the back they want a [TS]

01:15:29   little they want a little masturbation [TS]

01:15:30   time [TS]

01:15:31   yes and so if you slept in the van that [TS]

01:15:34   was your opportunity to play with [TS]

01:15:35   yourself that's also 66 hours of not [TS]

01:15:38   having to be around the other guys right [TS]

01:15:39   Charlotte be huge [TS]

01:15:41   ah oh my god no one is telling no one is [TS]

01:15:45   trying to tell me stories about the [TS]

01:15:47   Civil War no one is lecturing me right [TS]

01:15:50   now about Tippecanoe and Tyler don't [TS]

01:15:52   touch my tinkerbell poster [TS]

01:15:54   no one is yelling at me no one is no one [TS]

01:15:57   is opening a can of tuna fish and [TS]

01:16:00   spreading it on a pita bread [TS]

01:16:02   no one is explaining to me why [TS]

01:16:05   sebadoh is the greatest band in American [TS]

01:16:08   history i can just sit here and [TS]

01:16:10   masturbate and enjoy a little alone time [TS]

01:16:14   sleepytime so the van became like a [TS]

01:16:17   thing that people would fight over [TS]

01:16:18   that's it so i keep thinking the whole [TS]

01:16:21   time you say this answer however [TS]

01:16:24   sensible but look what [TS]

01:16:26   there must have been times when that if [TS]

01:16:28   you like paid off by somebody being [TS]

01:16:30   there when somebody tried to break in [TS]

01:16:31   and how many times did that happen and [TS]

01:16:33   who was there [TS]

01:16:34   well our drummer Michael our drummer at [TS]

01:16:38   the time Michael Schilling who is now a [TS]

01:16:40   professor of literature at cornish [TS]

01:16:44   College of the Arts nice was in the band [TS]

01:16:49   one night when a guy jumped up on the [TS]

01:16:52   back bumper and started shooting [TS]

01:16:56   roman candles Rockets roman candles Oh [TS]

01:17:03   Sparky kind [TS]

01:17:04   yeah well like shooting [TS]

01:17:06   flaming balls like boom boom roman [TS]

01:17:08   candles and Michael tells the story it [TS]

01:17:11   sounded kind of like a fever dream where [TS]

01:17:14   he uh the thing is we never he came [TS]

01:17:19   running into the hotel rooms like you [TS]

01:17:20   guys you guys come out this guy's [TS]

01:17:22   attacking the van we all went out there [TS]

01:17:24   and there's nobody there and there's [TS]

01:17:25   nothing no sign of anything it kind of [TS]

01:17:28   reminded me of the of the ghost of the [TS]

01:17:30   civil war debt that i saw when i was [TS]

01:17:32   sleeping in and out in front of your [TS]

01:17:33   house [TS]

01:17:33   yeah so I can't think of a time when [TS]

01:17:38   somebody when like two thugs and a [TS]

01:17:40   crowbar snuck up and were gonna try and [TS]

01:17:43   break into the man but this is also [TS]

01:17:45   because when I would leave a club with a [TS]

01:17:49   van full of gear and some dudes i would [TS]

01:17:52   take a circuitous route to lose any [TS]

01:17:56   tales that I might have I would use some [TS]

01:18:00   of my tail losing techniques that I [TS]

01:18:03   learned in my FBI surveillance manual [TS]

01:18:05   would lose any tail so what by the time [TS]

01:18:09   we got to the hotel [TS]

01:18:10   it's pretty safe pretty secure in the [TS]

01:18:12   knowledge that we had not been followed [TS]

01:18:17   just a bunch of people from some kind of [TS]

01:18:19   black ops shaking their fists at your [TS]

01:18:21   friend live although dammit [TS]

01:18:24   well the other thing I would do is if I [TS]

01:18:25   felt like somebody was really going to [TS]

01:18:27   if I felt like it was a situation where [TS]

01:18:29   there are a lot of guys lurking around [TS]

01:18:30   eyeball in our man i get everybody in [TS]

01:18:34   the band we drive for three hours after [TS]

01:18:36   the countryside like in the direction [TS]

01:18:38   you need to get the direction we need to [TS]

01:18:40   go okay so it's like you know if you [TS]

01:18:42   guys want to rip our van that's fine you [TS]

01:18:45   just have to follow us out into the [TS]

01:18:48   night at 4am we're gonna pull over at [TS]

01:18:51   the super eight somewhere and then do [TS]

01:18:53   your worst [TS]

01:18:55   there's something on you know I try to [TS]

01:18:58   be sensitive about these things because [TS]

01:18:59   i know you are i have to have to imagine [TS]

01:19:02   somewhat circumspect about what you [TS]

01:19:04   share in a public forum like this [TS]

01:19:05   certainly contribute your knowledge and [TS]

01:19:07   wisdom is something you're you're very [TS]

01:19:08   generous in sharing but you're the [TS]

01:19:10   various techniques that allow you to [TS]

01:19:11   conduct yourself in the way you do now [TS]

01:19:12   or in some kind of apocalyptic world are [TS]

01:19:15   things we want to you know you don't [TS]

01:19:16   tell people the gun sitting right here [TS]

01:19:18   actually you don't say oh yeah I've got [TS]

01:19:20   a bunch of like silver ingots i'm using [TS]

01:19:25   as a like a book stands you know these [TS]

01:19:32   things called the end of the row books [TS]

01:19:34   you're a canny man now i need over a [TS]

01:19:41   cougar ain't getting it over a [TS]

01:19:42   Krugerrand well they don't make silver [TS]

01:19:46   crooms overwhelming you don't want you [TS]

01:19:48   don't gold golden gold Krueger in what [TS]

01:19:50   they do but you know gold is a lot more [TS]

01:19:51   expensive than silver I was sure okay [TS]

01:19:53   it's easier to cash silver to do denny's [TS]

01:19:56   or something [TS]

01:19:57   oh I you in cash like see a cna sure [TS]

01:20:01   like geocaching another thing is before [TS]

01:20:03   i had had as much exposure to you in [TS]

01:20:06   general and specifically to your you [TS]

01:20:09   know it just got your training you know [TS]

01:20:12   especially not by this personal training [TS]

01:20:13   autodidactic training but here you're [TS]

01:20:16   hot-headed exorcism [TS]

01:20:17   I remember one day were not each stop me [TS]

01:20:20   I game will cut this out of the city [TS]

01:20:21   thing that the nose don't know I'm you [TS]

01:20:24   and I were in public transit going [TS]

01:20:25   somewhere here in San Francisco and and [TS]

01:20:27   you would do this thing you would even [TS]

01:20:29   we didn't we didn't want to talk about [TS]

01:20:30   that you did this thing but you always [TS]

01:20:32   do this thing that struck me as being [TS]

01:20:33   extremely weird and and now I think it's [TS]

01:20:37   really fucking weird but I understand [TS]

01:20:39   why you do it which is I would stand up [TS]

01:20:41   when our stop was coming I would stand [TS]

01:20:42   up and go stand by the door and you have [TS]

01:20:46   you would sit there in a way that was [TS]

01:20:47   not only a stand not you not only one [TS]

01:20:49   standing up but you kind of acted like [TS]

01:20:51   you didn't know me like maybe something [TS]

01:20:54   maybe this guy just happen to be saying [TS]

01:20:55   there might be turning around looking at [TS]

01:20:56   you your expression would not change but [TS]

01:20:59   the doors would open i would i would [TS]

01:21:01   walk out like an adult and a very last [TS]

01:21:04   moment like Han Solo jumping through the [TS]

01:21:06   closing sphincter you would dive through [TS]

01:21:08   the door but no it's a John just for [TS]

01:21:13   future reference if we ride meeting [TS]

01:21:15   together when I stand up and move toward [TS]

01:21:17   the door and sit next ones are stop [TS]

01:21:19   thinking you can get on with me up and [TS]

01:21:23   he said what did you say well you tell [TS]

01:21:26   me [TS]

01:21:27   I think he says he said was I don't want [TS]

01:21:30   people to know my move [TS]

01:21:31   what's ahead of time because the Chinese [TS]

01:21:36   lady with the chicken in the six pack [TS]

01:21:38   bags up you know what I mean that could [TS]

01:21:40   be like a kind of goldfinger situation i [TS]

01:21:47   still do that you know when the when the [TS]

01:21:48   when I was traveling with hodgman and [TS]

01:21:51   we're sitting in an airport and they're [TS]

01:21:53   like all right now boarding rows you [TS]

01:21:56   know 115 and how it stands up and he's [TS]

01:21:58   like that's us and like that's you [TS]

01:22:00   usually what I mean we're enroute were [TS]

01:22:04   both in row two or so nice to each other [TS]

01:22:06   i might you can get on now if you want [TS]

01:22:07   that so he's like well I do want i'm [TS]

01:22:11   like okay bye [TS]

01:22:12   he knows and he's staring at me all the [TS]

01:22:15   way down the then i'm just sitting there [TS]

01:22:17   reading a newspaper [TS]

01:22:18   I don't get on an airplane maybe i might [TS]

01:22:20   even take a flight maybe i'm just here [TS]

01:22:21   making it work here around here or I'm [TS]

01:22:24   gonna be reading this paper this might [TS]

01:22:25   not be a paper you keep moving don't [TS]

01:22:26   worry about me but not when the woman [TS]

01:22:28   from the airplane actually when they [TS]

01:22:31   have said final boarding doors are about [TS]

01:22:33   the club and happy when they have said [TS]

01:22:36   that three times and the woman at the [TS]

01:22:38   gate kicks the little rubber foot on the [TS]

01:22:43   door in order soon get close [TS]

01:22:45   that's when I stand up and walk briskly [TS]

01:22:48   to the gate you you hurl your carry-on [TS]

01:22:51   bag and dot when a lot of times I'll be [TS]

01:22:54   getting on the plane and they'll [TS]

01:22:55   actually have to actually be shutting [TS]

01:22:58   the door i'll be like one more coming [TS]

01:23:01   through tearing off your fake mustache [TS]

01:23:03   as you know I'm the last on the plane it [TS]

01:23:05   means whatever guy was following me [TS]

01:23:07   didn't make it on the blade that's right [TS]

01:23:09   maybe next time comrade who I think [TS]

01:23:16   could find a spot there so Hodgman gets [TS]

01:23:19   on let me turn this off [TS]

01:23:20   looks like you he's like oh it's time to [TS]

01:23:23   board the plane oh yeah no I mean here's [TS]

01:23:25   the thing John is I get swept up i get [TS]

01:23:27   swept up like anybody in the whole [TS]

01:23:28   boarding thing and you know me I'm a [TS]

01:23:29   Buddhist not really but it's kind of [TS]

01:23:31   Buddhist you know I like to keep my head [TS]

01:23:32   about me [TS]

01:23:33   I don't like to be somebody who's being [TS]

01:23:34   driven by the anxiety of people around [TS]

01:23:36   me it's a terrible fucking ideas nowhere [TS]

01:23:38   to lead your life and you know it so the [TS]

01:23:40   thing is at every moment of travel with [TS]

01:23:42   our shopping [TS]

01:23:42   guess you're not the the thing about [TS]

01:23:43   traveling is that every step of the way [TS]

01:23:45   in less you have the right mental [TS]

01:23:47   attitude about travel you will [TS]

01:23:48   constantly be going I can't fucking wait [TS]

01:23:51   to get to the next thing and i'll be [TS]

01:23:52   angry until I do [TS]

01:23:54   that's the default state of all [TS]

01:23:56   travelers so you want to get the fucking [TS]

01:23:58   Airport you get the fucking Airport you [TS]

01:24:00   can get your fucking bag checked right [TS]

01:24:01   security [TS]

01:24:02   hi dog coffee line fucking what really [TS]

01:24:06   really you're in you're in seating area [TS]

01:24:09   for and you're standing there with your [TS]

01:24:10   six bags why don't you why don't you [TS]

01:24:12   fucking move and and let this lady with [TS]

01:24:14   a baby through god damn it makes me mad [TS]

01:24:16   everybody's but I'm not really hungry [TS]

01:24:17   right cuz i'm in the moment my head is [TS]

01:24:19   removed some fucking Buddhist and I said [TS]

01:24:21   her and i said in my State like a [TS]

01:24:22   gentleman until they call it right and [TS]

01:24:25   then I gonna see that that's what i do [TS]

01:24:27   and then you get in there and [TS]

01:24:28   everybody's jostling around though [TS]

01:24:29   you're right in first class with [TS]

01:24:30   mustache boy so you don't have the [TS]

01:24:32   situation right but I don't hide your [TS]

01:24:34   first class seat to pay for that you [TS]

01:24:38   know sometimes position your musician [TS]

01:24:40   you can't fight fate for things like [TS]

01:24:41   that you know sometimes now they give [TS]

01:24:44   you these like first-class upgrades for [TS]

01:24:46   fifty bucks social Alaska he finally [TS]

01:24:48   asked Roxy and Alaska's there but the [TS]

01:24:50   thing is i'll tell you why I can already [TS]

01:24:51   tell not to review i can tell it's [TS]

01:24:53   bullshit first-class always checks in a [TS]

01:24:54   hundred percent full have to say [TS]

01:24:56   redundancy everyone nowadays they do [TS]

01:24:58   always checks in a hundred percent 484 [TS]

01:25:01   when i travel with john hodgman who I [TS]

01:25:03   travel is paid for [TS]

01:25:05   he just peels off one of those [TS]

01:25:06   novelty-sized builds and builds and [TS]

01:25:09   builds up a novelty-sized buildings like [TS]

01:25:10   this one's on me no I did over 60 of [TS]

01:25:12   those commercials from television you [TS]

01:25:14   know I know he did I thought of him on [TS]

01:25:16   the end and we should talk about the [TS]

01:25:17   shot photo of him on the internet the [TS]

01:25:18   other day we still doing the show I [TS]

01:25:20   thought you canceled our valued close [TS]

01:25:21   door close this out yeah yeah we stopped [TS]

01:25:23   a long time ago don't worry right now [TS]

01:25:24   we're still recording [TS]

01:25:25   and-and-and-and time we still have to [TS]

01:25:27   keep moustache he had kind of kind of [TS]

01:25:29   floppy like cool guy hair is he working [TS]

01:25:32   floppy cool guy hair was he just was he [TS]

01:25:35   was he like Shemp he just needed they [TS]

01:25:36   need to kind of spat back down your kind [TS]

01:25:38   of cool he looks like he's working a [TS]

01:25:40   look [TS]

01:25:40   well here's the here's the thing is the [TS]

01:25:42   thing about 900 here like a lot of [TS]

01:25:45   people he he he struggled to find of the [TS]

01:25:49   right haircut for a long time I think [TS]

01:25:51   because um you know he has a unusual [TS]

01:25:55   head shape [TS]

01:25:56   he has a head shape that that you can't [TS]

01:25:58   just go into a barber and say give me [TS]

01:26:00   the standard a preppy haircut I don't [TS]

01:26:03   think you could either you extremely [TS]

01:26:05   large head [TS]

01:26:06   well that's why I taught myself how to [TS]

01:26:07   cut my own hair right he went to Yale [TS]

01:26:10   and he went to yell so he was used to [TS]

01:26:12   going to barbers and having barbering [TS]

01:26:15   done i heard they have a whole [TS]

01:26:16   skullenbones a salon with that's true [TS]

01:26:19   stolen bones barbershop [TS]

01:26:21   yep but so for a long time I think here [TS]

01:26:23   he was just having his hair cut by [TS]

01:26:26   somebody and it he would get a different [TS]

01:26:29   you know it'd be a different experience [TS]

01:26:30   every time well um in my a sense we've [TS]

01:26:35   known each other [TS]

01:26:36   I mean I think at one point his wife [TS]

01:26:38   even suggested that I cut his hair and [TS]

01:26:41   he was very very unwilling to have me [TS]

01:26:45   cut his hair how do you feel about her [TS]

01:26:46   even offering that up on his people's he [TS]

01:26:48   was furious at her he was just like no [TS]

01:26:51   no no no no and partly it was that he [TS]

01:26:55   didn't want me touching him and partly [TS]

01:26:57   2.1 bad that was not a thing and she was [TS]

01:27:04   like but I mean I think you know so he [TS]

01:27:07   grew his hair a little bit and I think [TS]

01:27:09   the prospect maybe even the prospect of [TS]

01:27:11   having me cut his hair was enough to [TS]

01:27:14   what was enough to cause him to start [TS]

01:27:17   thinking about it just as he did it had [TS]

01:27:18   an effect [TS]

01:27:20   well since that time he has started [TS]

01:27:22   wearing his hair in what i think is a [TS]

01:27:24   much much more becoming style for him [TS]

01:27:27   and you know for me I think like if i [TS]

01:27:30   cut my hair to short on the sides it [TS]

01:27:32   really it really exacerbates the bigness [TS]

01:27:36   of my head doesn't make you look like a [TS]

01:27:39   juggalo makes me look more like a it [TS]

01:27:42   makes me look like a guy that used to be [TS]

01:27:44   in shape now has a 26 inch neck and [TS]

01:27:52   sells right so its profitability still [TS]

01:27:55   thinks to himself as being like BP yeah [TS]

01:27:58   you'd be slipped guys and he's going to [TS]

01:28:00   those got one of those holiday a graphic [TS]

01:28:03   tee with like this douchebag German [TS]

01:28:06   gothic black-letter things on it you [TS]

01:28:08   know it does outs to see or something [TS]

01:28:10   like that up that guy [TS]

01:28:13   yeah right so pretty done date-raped by [TS]

01:28:15   net hardy shirt how does that work and [TS]

01:28:18   Hardy is the hotrod guy right behind 10 [TS]

01:28:21   what about a shower sandals are kinda [TS]

01:28:23   rapey what I have never you know what I [TS]

01:28:26   don't have a shower sandals like for you [TS]

01:28:27   I take my I take my chances i get in the [TS]

01:28:30   shower and it's like do I am I going to [TS]

01:28:33   get foot fungus here is that concern [TS]

01:28:34   that concern is contagion like you gonna [TS]

01:28:37   tell virus going to get to buyers are [TS]

01:28:39   going to get jock foot [TS]

01:28:41   yes and so I take my chances [TS]

01:28:45   yeah well flip flops and only flip flops [TS]

01:28:46   either i don't like him I don't like him [TS]

01:28:48   I don't like anybody in them when i was [TS]

01:28:51   living in new york it was right during [TS]

01:28:55   the transition between when girls girls [TS]

01:28:57   during the nineties you remember all [TS]

01:28:59   wore big chunky boots on that puts him [TS]

01:29:02   and I thought that was so sexy little [TS]

01:29:04   skinny legs [TS]

01:29:05   yea big chunky boots and a little [TS]

01:29:07   babydoll dresses who and then right [TS]

01:29:10   there at the end of the nineties there [TS]

01:29:11   was this transition all of a sudden they [TS]

01:29:12   were wearing really expensive flip-flops [TS]

01:29:14   like expensive flip-flop high heel flip [TS]

01:29:17   flops I don't think you can do that by [TS]

01:29:21   your flip-flops that's what that was the [TS]

01:29:23   new fashion and I was so disgusted by [TS]

01:29:25   first of all because people's toes are [TS]

01:29:27   disgusting [TS]

01:29:28   no absolutely second of all combat boots [TS]

01:29:31   are sexy [TS]

01:29:31   I i figured when we got to combat boots [TS]

01:29:33   and baby doll dresses that we were at [TS]

01:29:35   the end of fashion who and that girl's [TS]

01:29:38   this was that this was going to be sexy [TS]

01:29:40   from here on out [TS]

01:29:42   ok that somehow there would be like [TS]

01:29:43   would be like the nasdaq in an 89 that [TS]

01:29:46   we would just be able to sustain this [TS]

01:29:47   level of awesomesauce forever [TS]

01:29:49   yeah right you can wear different [TS]

01:29:50   dresses your pants and we will see [TS]

01:29:52   variations on this but at this point [TS]

01:29:53   taste has changed but the boot the boot [TS]

01:29:55   boots boots whoo that's we're done [TS]

01:29:59   it's a great look and then high heel [TS]

01:30:01   flip flops came in and I was and I'm [TS]

01:30:04   right on the subways all the time [TS]

01:30:06   looking at these girls and I'm like you [TS]

01:30:08   craggy gnarly toes I don't want to see [TS]

01:30:12   this i want you in boots [TS]

01:30:15   this it's big you know how cold our [TS]

01:30:16   neighborhood is like almost all the time [TS]

01:30:18   like it's 53 in our neighborhood every [TS]

01:30:21   day because the the winter comes in with [TS]

01:30:23   a very very unusual climate even for San [TS]

01:30:25   Francisco San Francisco's got a crazy [TS]

01:30:27   climate but even i live in a pretty cold [TS]

01:30:30   neighborhood where there are days will [TS]

01:30:31   be little bit 50 to 55 it goes up and [TS]
