00:00:18   that's the consensus that or you can [TS]

00:00:20   have all god that's terrible ask people [TS]

00:00:22   you can have that you can have John haha [TS]

00:00:25   oh that's what that's awesome [TS]

00:00:27   you like that one better oh yeah Flash [TS]

00:00:29   Gordon who John Roderick theme that's [TS]

00:00:32   amazing i like trying really do it John [TS]

00:00:35   oh go home take your first getting me [TS]

00:00:42   that's tailor-made you okay with that i [TS]

00:00:45   didn't want before that he scoffed know [TS]

00:00:47   my mother must not have come through [TS]

00:00:48   clearly because that is exactly what [TS]

00:00:51   I've always wanted with memory serves [TS]

00:00:53   you had one eye on that kiss and the [TS]

00:00:55   other i was on Queen when you're a kid [TS]

00:00:58   and you your eyes drifted like one lazy [TS]

00:01:01   eye and the other followed you ended up [TS]

00:01:02   on queenside accurate [TS]

00:01:04   that's correct when I was in five think [TS]

00:01:07   fourth grade it was it was it really [TS]

00:01:11   could have gone either way queen or kiss [TS]

00:01:13   and the cheese yeah well you know you [TS]

00:01:18   could be kiss army which which I was [TS]

00:01:20   initially a butt or you could be one of [TS]

00:01:23   the champions between Navy you should be [TS]

00:01:26   in the Queen maybe you could be in the [TS]

00:01:28   yeah you could be a sailor in the Queen [TS]

00:01:30   sub you can be a member of the submarine [TS]

00:01:32   Queen summary easy it's time that and [TS]

00:01:36   that and i realized i think i think i [TS]

00:01:40   was still too young to realize that [TS]

00:01:42   Queen was infinitely superior to kiss in [TS]

00:01:45   everyway musically and in every other [TS]

00:01:47   respect [TS]

00:01:48   uh-huh i just chose based on i don't [TS]

00:01:53   know i think you know I think I chose [TS]

00:01:55   based on heavy ridge [TS]

00:01:57   it's alright i think the ridge it was [TS]

00:01:59   the ridge that tipped the scales huh [TS]

00:02:02   like the kiss ridge if you really strip [TS]

00:02:06   away all the recount all the makeup and [TS]

00:02:09   all the boots and almond codpieces [TS]

00:02:11   and the blood packets you're telling me [TS]

00:02:14   you're telling me that the ridiculous [TS]

00:02:17   over-the-top unnecessary the Attic ality [TS]

00:02:22   of kiss was just too much for you and so [TS]

00:02:26   you went with queen huh [TS]

00:02:30   that's correct let me ask you the hard [TS]

00:02:32   question because I can tell you from [TS]

00:02:34   that same time my one of my other big [TS]

00:02:36   man's I was always attracted to that [TS]

00:02:37   reality we got shot village people have [TS]

00:02:40   you felt very you live in San Francisco [TS]

00:02:42   but let those people had a song called [TS]

00:02:44   San Francisco so good I i was a fan of [TS]

00:02:46   village before they fine they were fun i [TS]

00:02:49   was a fan i was a fan of the village [TS]

00:02:50   people because ACDC genuinely scared me [TS]

00:02:55   the record covers of ac/dc in the [TS]

00:02:59   seventies [TS]

00:03:00   yeah where were genuinely scary they [TS]

00:03:03   were sweaty men and they looked they [TS]

00:03:06   looked vile they looked like they wanted [TS]

00:03:09   to put a finger in you and as a child I [TS]

00:03:14   instinctively did not want one of their [TS]

00:03:16   fingers in me from myspace they turn it [TS]

00:03:18   the other way [TS]

00:03:20   yeah thanks once again at once it's a [TS]

00:03:22   highway highway to hell is that the [TS]

00:03:23   lower Angus has the horns like a sneer [TS]

00:03:27   there's one yeah it's a snare east near [TS]

00:03:29   it was scary it I I remember the day [TS]

00:03:33   that record came out and it was on you [TS]

00:03:35   know it was on the news on the end cap [TS]

00:03:38   of every Eiling peaches or whatever [TS]

00:03:40   story teaches and and I was at the [TS]

00:03:44   northgate mall with my mom all I wanted [TS]

00:03:48   was a snow cone and and and my god the [TS]

00:03:54   the record just uh and i think it was on [TS]

00:03:57   the records that was on the stands at [TS]

00:03:58   the same time as as the Village People [TS]

00:04:00   record and there was no no question the [TS]

00:04:04   village people seemed much friendlier [TS]

00:04:06   there was an Indian I mean they seem [TS]

00:04:08   like guys you could play guns with you [TS]

00:04:11   know well like like kiss I i think i was [TS]

00:04:14   attracted them for their what comic [TS]

00:04:17   book- they're cartoonish pneus you know [TS]

00:04:19   I mean right yeah i know the deciding [TS]

00:04:22   factor with Queen I think just [TS]

00:04:24   was it is that thing that in bryan maze [TS]

00:04:28   guitar tone [TS]

00:04:29   uh-huh which is the most organic sound [TS]

00:04:35   that even a child can understand that [TS]

00:04:37   that is the greatest guitar tone of all [TS]

00:04:40   time even a little infant if you played [TS]

00:04:43   the sound of kiss which is the sound of [TS]

00:04:49   like handicapped people having sex for [TS]

00:04:54   the sound of Queen which is the sound of [TS]

00:04:57   angels singing in the night you have to [TS]

00:05:01   go with Queen everything I can tell [TS]

00:05:02   you're feeling better [TS]

00:05:03   I'm feeling better what kind of handicap [TS]

00:05:06   oh I mean I movement is a movement [TS]

00:05:08   impairment is that I you know it's more [TS]

00:05:10   of a visual thing this is more [TS]

00:05:12   handi-capable ma the area they turned it [TS]

00:05:16   around [TS]

00:05:17   you know they had a disability and they [TS]

00:05:18   and they made it a strength god bless [TS]

00:05:20   them [TS]

00:05:21   yeah i mean imagine what gene Simmons [TS]

00:05:22   would be doing otherwise imagine him [TS]

00:05:26   working at a DMV he seems a little i [TS]

00:05:29   mean like when you me see him talk he [TS]

00:05:31   seems almost like somebody who would be [TS]

00:05:33   like in venture capital or debt [TS]

00:05:35   collection is very business-minded he is [TS]

00:05:38   Donald Trump but what gene Simmons or [TS]

00:05:42   Donald Trump next to each other they're [TS]

00:05:43   the same man even an infant can tell [TS]

00:05:45   even an infant could listen to those two [TS]

00:05:48   guys and know that they are that they're [TS]

00:05:51   an unholy union an unholy hit like a [TS]

00:05:56   unholy pair of me think about gene [TS]

00:05:58   Simmons hair for a second when he's not [TS]

00:06:00   wearing his wig [TS]

00:06:02   oh that thing he has now it's the same [TS]

00:06:05   it's Donald Trump's hair it's the same [TS]

00:06:07   stuff it's made of the same sort of like [TS]

00:06:09   like a rhinoceros pubic hair [TS]

00:06:13   what he was going to say I mean Donald [TS]

00:06:15   Trump's hair looks like a penthouse the [TS]

00:06:17   couch and I think gene Simmons looks [TS]

00:06:20   more like something from Japan [TS]

00:06:21   I mean it's not pixelated don't know why [TS]

00:06:23   the text everything is very troubling [TS]

00:06:24   I see what you mean is the Germans are [TS]

00:06:26   pixelate you know what it was for me [TS]

00:06:27   with Queen it was harmonies [TS]

00:06:29   oh yeah now it's very theatrical who was [TS]

00:06:32   there now we know as music nerds we know [TS]

00:06:35   that for example on behind [TS]

00:06:37   wraps you know the strain behavior have [TS]

00:06:39   seen that the TV show on that are right [TS]

00:06:41   about it [TS]

00:06:41   however long it took to do that yeah [TS]

00:06:44   yeah in fact i have the I have some of [TS]

00:06:47   them there was a while there the studio [TS]

00:06:49   nerds didn't like a DVD wallet full of [TS]

00:06:54   like behind the music thing I do i do [TS]

00:06:56   have that but in addition to that there [TS]

00:06:57   was a while there where the studio nerds [TS]

00:06:59   in the studio owners may be doing this [TS]

00:07:00   till I haven't been in the recording [TS]

00:07:01   studio in awhile but there they were [TS]

00:07:04   trading around the multitrack tapes of [TS]

00:07:08   various of these great albums and we got [TS]

00:07:13   the multi-tracks of bohemian rhapsody [TS]

00:07:16   where you can actually solo the [TS]

00:07:19   individual tracking bounce [TS]

00:07:22   well that's the thing I mean it's the [TS]

00:07:25   gallant until the tape was gonna break [TS]

00:07:26   that but that's the thing you've got e [TS]

00:07:28   you're still at the time working on a [TS]

00:07:31   24-track tape right so there are still [TS]

00:07:35   24 individual tracks and you could you [TS]

00:07:37   could solve these tracks and eat track [TS]

00:07:38   had been bounced down there was so many [TS]

00:07:41   harmony stacked up on each one of these [TS]

00:07:43   tracks and then there were multiple [TS]

00:07:45   tracks of them but just to listen to the [TS]

00:07:47   individual you know the individual [TS]

00:07:49   pieces of that puzzle and you just you [TS]

00:07:52   get one step closer to understanding how [TS]

00:07:55   it was put together out you know you eat [TS]

00:07:58   you're sitting in the recording studio [TS]

00:07:59   listening to it through the good [TS]

00:08:00   speakers and just like oh my god this is [TS]

00:08:03   an amazing work and yet we've talked [TS]

00:08:05   about this in other venues but and [TS]

00:08:07   surfing through or themselves bounce [TS]

00:08:09   these in the end eighth-generation tapes [TS]

00:08:11   for use various sections of tape [TS]

00:08:13   containing that had to be spliced may [TS]

00:08:15   recall placing tape in front of the [TS]

00:08:17   light and being able to see through it [TS]

00:08:18   as they had been recording so intensely [TS]

00:08:20   that's unbelievable imagine that the [TS]

00:08:22   tape broke after all that would be sad [TS]

00:08:25   although back in back in the day tape [TS]

00:08:28   you know cutting tape was a big part of [TS]

00:08:33   making records so the tape you you think [TS]

00:08:35   about like oh no what the tape broke but [TS]

00:08:36   in fact they would just cut it back [TS]

00:08:39   together [TS]

00:08:40   yeah I went to I went to a speech by Roy [TS]

00:08:42   Thomas Baker the man who produced the [TS]

00:08:44   album / business it's two great two [TS]

00:08:47   great delight on my as far as I'm [TS]

00:08:48   concerned yeah I listen to him talk [TS]

00:08:50   about that process [TS]

00:08:51   listen I don't know it's that is I could [TS]

00:08:54   go up the I could go up the river all [TS]

00:08:56   the way to Cambodia [TS]

00:08:57   uh-huh i was talking about bohemian [TS]

00:09:00   rhapsody I i would enjoy that now are [TS]

00:09:02   you in RTP fan in general you like you [TS]

00:09:03   like the cars that first cars record [TS]

00:09:05   something else he's incredible he's a [TS]

00:09:07   great [TS]

00:09:08   he's a great producer and listening to [TS]

00:09:10   him talk a great dude whenever I see a [TS]

00:09:12   little country see from these from the [TS]

00:09:14   England mhm and in fact you can still go [TS]

00:09:18   make records with him if you want you [TS]

00:09:21   can go to England and make a record with [TS]

00:09:23   Roy Thomas Baker he has a studio and he [TS]

00:09:26   will make a record with you if you pay [TS]

00:09:28   him the money he will do it [TS]

00:09:31   have you thought about that at all well [TS]

00:09:33   yeah I mean he made he made the team [TS]

00:09:36   integrate foreigner record he made me [TS]

00:09:38   maybe he made what I can beat all those [TS]

00:09:40   emails record he made what i consider to [TS]

00:09:43   be a and over rate it's underaged excuse [TS]

00:09:46   me slightly underrated not a hugely [TS]

00:09:47   underrated it's slightly underrated [TS]

00:09:49   cheap trick record all right he did a [TS]

00:09:51   one-on-one which I was just tight that [TS]

00:09:53   she's tight it's a pretty great song [TS]

00:09:55   she's nice cease type she's giving me [TS]

00:09:58   the go [TS]

00:09:59   he's given me the high sign that's so [TS]

00:10:01   good it's so good man he made those [TS]

00:10:05   journey records is that right [TS]

00:10:07   you know it's 73 records you made [TS]

00:10:10   infinity made evolution [TS]

00:10:11   oh come on no he did i'm gonna have two [TS]

00:10:14   things he's still working if I can work [TS]

00:10:15   on Chinese Democracy you can make a [TS]

00:10:21   record with this man and he's hilarious [TS]

00:10:23   he's a he he looks awesome i don't [TS]

00:10:26   understand why you're near a computer [TS]

00:10:27   right now but it is is I'm a big fan i [TS]

00:10:31   must tell you I've discussed the cells [TS]

00:10:33   from a big fan of wikipedia photos [TS]

00:10:34   because as you know they must be public [TS]

00:10:36   domain and his is it looks like it looks [TS]

00:10:42   like maybe his aunt or nice perhaps shot [TS]

00:10:45   it with us something that she got out of [TS]

00:10:47   a cereal box up is definitely one flash [TS]

00:10:50   source the flash is very very bright [TS]

00:10:51   eyes [TS]

00:10:53   he looks kinda like ozzy osbourne meats [TS]

00:10:55   like the guy from rocky or not you know [TS]

00:10:58   this is the thing when you think about [TS]

00:10:59   work with somebody like him or famously [TS]

00:11:02   somebody like Todd Rundgren I mean Todd [TS]

00:11:04   run right [TS]

00:11:04   has made some people sound really really [TS]

00:11:06   good but it sounds pretty tough to work [TS]

00:11:07   with a lot of people are tough to work [TS]

00:11:11   with [TS]

00:11:11   I mean I think you can make a record [TS]

00:11:14   with you can make a record with a lot of [TS]

00:11:17   sort of rockstars uh-huh and some of [TS]

00:11:20   those people are are tougher than others [TS]

00:11:24   I you know I the the the guy from not [TS]

00:11:30   Elliot Eastern if I could make a record [TS]

00:11:32   le Eastern I absolutely would but the [TS]

00:11:35   guitar player of the talking heads [TS]

00:11:37   Jerry Harrison Jerry Harrison you can [TS]

00:11:40   make a record with Jerry Harrison and my [TS]

00:11:41   understanding is that you know that he [TS]

00:11:43   he like shows up at nuna leaves at five [TS]

00:11:46   I don't know that to be sure people [TS]

00:11:48   produced at any produce a peat bog thing [TS]

00:11:51   a long time ago one of my thing when I [TS]

00:11:52   confusing that with was no no Jerry [TS]

00:11:54   Harrison was like young gods or [TS]

00:11:56   something God's I his pant [TS]

00:11:57   oh well he was in he was in the modern [TS]

00:12:02   lovers and lovers but you also do you [TS]

00:12:04   know what I'm thinking of people i'm [TS]

00:12:05   sorry i'm totally confused people [TS]

00:12:06   produced that feels record i like Oh [TS]

00:12:09   Peter now Peter Buck that would be an [TS]

00:12:11   interesting guy to have produced your [TS]

00:12:12   record i bet he have good notes on the [TS]

00:12:15   songs too [TS]

00:12:16   he would i do not know how well he would [TS]

00:12:19   communicate to you though I think scum I [TS]

00:12:23   meant it wants and he seemed he seemed [TS]

00:12:24   like a really down-to-earth guy who is [TS]

00:12:27   extremely nervous [TS]

00:12:28   Peter Berg miss backstage a thing and he [TS]

00:12:31   was being mobbed [TS]

00:12:32   he's an extremely nice man a very nice [TS]

00:12:34   man a smart and nice person who has what [TS]

00:12:38   i would characterize speaking as a [TS]

00:12:40   professional as a mental health [TS]

00:12:42   professional are characterized him as [TS]

00:12:43   having a social anxiety disorder [TS]

00:12:45   ok I have friends that have that yes i [TS]

00:12:48   know you do i have spent time with your [TS]

00:12:50   friends yeah what's its kind of its [TS]

00:12:52   almost prerequisites on the form in [TS]

00:12:54   which they don't want to fill out [TS]

00:12:55   because they don't like pencils either [TS]

00:12:56   you know what to say that as usual can [TS]

00:12:58   tell you how I stand corrected [TS]

00:13:00   oh my god he didn't want to whine still [TS]

00:13:03   a wide stance who have a very wide [TS]

00:13:05   stance he did he's done of course rtb [TS]

00:13:08   rtb sorry RGB did a bunch of the Queen [TS]

00:13:11   records probably looks like almost all [TS]

00:13:13   heated Devo [TS]

00:13:14   he did you are absolutely correct i [TS]

00:13:17   stand further corrected he to infinity [TS]

00:13:19   and evolution the man instantly we gotta [TS]

00:13:23   get back to journey at some point it's [TS]

00:13:24   an awkward awkward thing just talk they [TS]

00:13:26   did he did the darkness that [TS]

00:13:27   controversial ban the darkness smashing [TS]

00:13:30   pumpkin smash because that's a band i [TS]

00:13:32   could do without you didn't later [TS]

00:13:33   smashing pumpkins record he's not [TS]

00:13:34   responsible for them [TS]

00:13:36   did he did one after after the fat bald [TS]

00:13:39   kid decided that people need to hear him [TS]

00:13:41   saying Charlie Brown [TS]

00:13:42   yeah we're gonna hang back and it [TS]

00:13:45   smashing pumpkins are classic example of [TS]

00:13:47   one of those days where I was like [TS]

00:13:48   everybody likes you [TS]

00:13:49   what if it's like it here to visit how [TS]

00:13:51   what the fuck happened was smashing how [TS]

00:13:53   did they get to be so popular what is [TS]

00:13:55   her formula John Rother because you were [TS]

00:13:57   there you worked the ground museum you [TS]

00:13:58   saw a lot of this go by you you get your [TS]

00:14:01   bar back your manager you counted money [TS]

00:14:03   you killed off hundreds what the fuck [TS]

00:14:04   happened how to Smashing Pumpkins get on [TS]

00:14:06   our radar screen as you probably know he [TS]

00:14:08   was a very good guitar player and that [TS]

00:14:09   music was it was it was I think what it [TS]

00:14:14   what it was he took the sound of [TS]

00:14:16   shoegazer uh-huh [TS]

00:14:18   which was very popular in England but [TS]

00:14:20   the shoegazer guys except for stone [TS]

00:14:22   roses or couple other were a lot of [TS]

00:14:24   songs she gazer was kind of I have more [TS]

00:14:28   influence here then then interest [TS]

00:14:31   yeah right it was it was a vibe but but [TS]

00:14:33   when it would come to America would be [TS]

00:14:34   like there's no songs there it's just [TS]

00:14:36   like man them and their mana mana and [TS]

00:14:38   seven smashing pumpkins kind of had that [TS]

00:14:40   they got that my bloody valentine [TS]

00:14:42   thickness to their society that one [TS]

00:14:45   record I like fish but had vocals were [TS]

00:14:48   mixed way down [TS]

00:14:50   who so it sounded like just as wall [TS]

00:14:52   guitars and then this kind of echoey [TS]

00:14:54   singer and it's just it sounded really [TS]

00:14:57   compelling and they had songs so it was [TS]

00:15:01   kind of like haha haha that's what your [TS]

00:15:03   that that's always what you were looking [TS]

00:15:05   for my problem with the Stone Roses was [TS]

00:15:08   that after that aside from that one tune [TS]

00:15:11   like the rest of the stuff just felt [TS]

00:15:12   like Mary I wanna be adored [TS]

00:15:14   yeah well it or she's a waterfall with [TS]

00:15:17   one stone roses to the [TS]

00:15:20   the biggest tip the one where though [TS]

00:15:23   yeah i was taking the drum drum dance [TS]

00:15:25   beat [TS]

00:15:26   yeah i was thinking of that first song [TS]

00:15:28   that Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun on me [TS]

00:15:33   here's the problem also with all these [TS]

00:15:34   social anxiety people i'm guessing here [TS]

00:15:36   what's his name Charlie Charlie Charlie [TS]

00:15:38   Rose which is named billy billy corgan [TS]

00:15:40   Billy Billy Billy Corgan billy corgan [TS]

00:15:42   the smartest kid in the world he i think [TS]

00:15:44   it's bob was good [TS]

00:15:47   billy corgan problem see and this also [TS]

00:15:49   goes this goes for all these people with [TS]

00:15:50   the possible exception of prints and [TS]

00:15:52   maybe Prince is these people who are [TS]

00:15:53   clearly insane loners who are very [TS]

00:15:55   gifted and learned you know what about [TS]

00:15:58   how about how about the the weezer guy [TS]

00:16:00   like fools gold that was the that was [TS]

00:16:02   the tombstone whistles full i have that [TS]

00:16:04   record you know the directors all those [TS]

00:16:06   records as many as Manchester records [TS]

00:16:08   like three-quarters of them i had no [TS]

00:16:10   idea why people like them I still don't [TS]

00:16:12   understand happy mondays and then a lot [TS]

00:16:14   of just didn't age well that even the [TS]

00:16:16   Stone Roses record it did not have legs [TS]

00:16:17   not like you a lot of other bands of the [TS]

00:16:19   time they didn't age well they didn't [TS]

00:16:20   even aged well in the time it took the [TS]

00:16:22   songs to get from the speakers to your [TS]

00:16:24   ear by time he took off the plastic but [TS]

00:16:27   you i'm guessing we're not standing on a [TS]

00:16:30   beach in goa in 1989 quite nicely not my [TS]

00:16:34   99 sooner super super high on MDMA and [TS]

00:16:39   with your body covered in dayglo paint [TS]

00:16:41   because if you were then the music would [TS]

00:16:45   have made perfect sense to you [TS]

00:16:47   uh-huh i actually had of the the sort of [TS]

00:16:50   strange experience of being in southern [TS]

00:16:52   Spain in 1989 when all that music was [TS]

00:16:57   blowing up and I was taking a lot of of [TS]

00:17:01   of little little square pieces of paper [TS]

00:17:05   and eating a lot of little bits of like [TS]

00:17:08   a masculine and actually my train ticket [TS]

00:17:12   first thing that happens eating a lot of [TS]

00:17:14   train tickets i was smoking a lot of [TS]

00:17:16   very black hash that had floated over [TS]

00:17:19   from Africa who and dancing on the beach [TS]

00:17:22   to this to this music went to a whole [TS]

00:17:29   month of [TS]

00:17:31   beach waves in 89 in Spain and let me [TS]

00:17:38   tell you the music was was just exactly [TS]

00:17:41   right for that uh-huh but i was so high [TS]

00:17:45   and everyone around me was so high we [TS]

00:17:49   were so high i don't know i guess they [TS]

00:17:52   could put on Phil Ochs or mitch miller [TS]

00:17:54   and you're probably so high that you [TS]

00:17:55   still would have danced in dayglo paint [TS]

00:17:57   they could have put on you know whipped [TS]

00:17:59   cream and other delights think the [TS]

00:18:01   record they could have put on Henry [TS]

00:18:04   Mancini's baby elephant war haha i would [TS]

00:18:09   have thought it was the most amazing [TS]

00:18:10   thing in the world because we just did [TS]

00:18:14   I'm sorry not the indelible image of you [TS]

00:18:16   dancing earnestly to her opportunity on [TS]

00:18:19   her breast pocket up at that the they [TS]

00:18:25   could have put flight of the bumble bees [TS]

00:18:27   lap well uh I these beach waves were [TS]

00:18:31   incredible things that be like this [TS]

00:18:33   grass hot and they would they would [TS]

00:18:35   truck out these massive speakers out on [TS]

00:18:39   the beach and then you would and then [TS]

00:18:41   colored lights and they would you know [TS]

00:18:43   they would kind of paint everything was [TS]

00:18:45   crazy day glow paint and then the drugs [TS]

00:18:48   were it was assumed that the that [TS]

00:18:52   everybody had drugs like that wasn't a [TS]

00:18:54   there was no hey man have you got any [TS]

00:18:56   drugs [TS]

00:18:57   it was very much like all right here's [TS]

00:18:58   the music and now here are some drugs [TS]

00:19:00   and now here here's some liquor and go [TS]

00:19:04   and so everybody was wasted and you [TS]

00:19:07   could get you could walk out into the [TS]

00:19:09   ocean and the music was still loud you [TS]

00:19:11   can dance with the waves and and we were [TS]

00:19:14   young people then there was touching [TS]

00:19:17   there's a lot of touching this is very [TS]

00:19:20   this sounds a lot like the sixties John [TS]

00:19:21   it was a magical time and you know that [TS]

00:19:24   whole thing that happens in ibiza for [TS]

00:19:27   the intervening 20 years they've just [TS]

00:19:29   been trying to recapture those [TS]

00:19:31   experiences that we a few bold pioneers [TS]

00:19:35   intrepid pioneers had their in 89 I was [TS]

00:19:38   AI was just a an accidental tourist [TS]

00:19:41   through there you know I was on my own [TS]

00:19:44   mission and came across this thing [TS]

00:19:45   didn't realize it was a movement that [TS]

00:19:47   was happening didn't realize it was that [TS]

00:19:50   there were but it was a sound I was just [TS]

00:19:54   like wow drugs and girls huh [TS]

00:19:56   but it kept me there this is this is [TS]

00:19:59   this is frequently the way certainly [TS]

00:20:01   that way with the quote-unquote summer [TS]

00:20:02   of love which if you do even the [TS]

00:20:04   slightest bit of reading you'll discover [TS]

00:20:05   was maybe a month there was about a [TS]

00:20:07   month that went from it's fun to smoke [TS]

00:20:10   pot and neck to like everybody hates [TS]

00:20:12   tree has been ruined with heroin it was [TS]

00:20:14   a very very short time and I like you [TS]

00:20:15   say the tourists arrive but when you're [TS]

00:20:17   in the moment of something like that and [TS]

00:20:19   it doesn't have a name yet you know that [TS]

00:20:21   success exciting but you know didn't [TS]

00:20:24   know how did you know it's time to go [TS]

00:20:26   oh it was time to go because somebody [TS]

00:20:29   that I met somebody came along was like [TS]

00:20:31   hey you want to go to Morocco and I was [TS]

00:20:34   like yeah this is this thing here on the [TS]

00:20:37   beach has been great but I'm it must be [TS]

00:20:40   it was like it was like everything when [TS]

00:20:42   you're young you think that I've never [TS]

00:20:46   been to the south of Spain before so [TS]

00:20:48   once I got there I and this was going on [TS]

00:20:50   I was like oh this must be what it's [TS]

00:20:52   like in the south of Spain a bunch of [TS]

00:20:53   English kids listening to really loud [TS]

00:20:56   music and and tripping on ecstasy I [TS]

00:21:00   didn't it [TS]

00:21:01   I didn't know that it was just a it was [TS]

00:21:02   just a moment [TS]

00:21:04   uh-huh and so a so yeah I then I went to [TS]

00:21:07   Morocco I spent I spent a month there [TS]

00:21:09   trying to I got to Morocco and I and I [TS]

00:21:11   decided that I was going to hitchhike to [TS]

00:21:16   Mount Kilimanjaro I had died i just [TS]

00:21:21   turned 21 I turned 21 in cadiz spain and [TS]

00:21:27   I was so I was 21 and and two days old [TS]

00:21:31   and I'm in Morocco and I say I'm in [TS]

00:21:36   Africa i'm going to hitchhike to Mount [TS]

00:21:37   Kilimanjaro and so off I go and I stick [TS]

00:21:43   out my thumb and I realize you know [TS]

00:21:46   gonna have to take a couple of like of [TS]

00:21:48   those African brothers the Moroccan [TS]

00:21:50   buses that are full of like the bus has [TS]

00:21:53   a bunch of chickens in and then their [TS]

00:21:54   goats [TS]

00:21:54   time to the roof but I spent two weeks [TS]

00:21:57   going heading south in Morocco the whole [TS]

00:22:01   time like yeah I'm going to kill him in [TS]

00:22:04   jarrow and it and nobody's listening to [TS]

00:22:07   me and I finally get I finally get down [TS]

00:22:11   to the edge of the Sahara to a town [TS]

00:22:17   called wars on and what does that is a [TS]

00:22:24   this is pretty far down there on the on [TS]

00:22:32   the other side of the other side of the [TS]

00:22:36   mountains and kind of you know your you [TS]

00:22:38   are now at the at the north edge of the [TS]

00:22:43   desert and and and they're these trucks [TS]

00:22:47   coming through this town that are headed [TS]

00:22:51   across that are headed across the desert [TS]

00:22:53   and I and I get it I get another hitch [TS]

00:22:55   another ride [TS]

00:22:57   I get down to this little town called [TS]

00:22:58   zagora and it's it's really the last [TS]

00:23:01   it's really pretty close to the last [TS]

00:23:05   town before the Sahara and I'm I'm [TS]

00:23:09   standard this hotel and I'm talking to [TS]

00:23:10   people I'm like an end and its really [TS]

00:23:13   it's an oasis you know what I mean like [TS]

00:23:15   it's desert desert desert then you come [TS]

00:23:16   to this little town zagora blue palm [TS]

00:23:18   trees and a little and there's a there's [TS]

00:23:21   like a pond it's like an oasis like a [TS]

00:23:23   proper pond in the desert with frogs and [TS]

00:23:26   stuff I'm talking to these guys in the [TS]

00:23:28   hotel these truck drivers and I'm like [TS]

00:23:29   you know hey can I get a ride with you [TS]

00:23:32   across the desert and everybody laughs [TS]

00:23:35   like so I go to another group and I'm [TS]

00:23:38   like I'm trying to get across the desert [TS]

00:23:40   you know can get comments right with you [TS]

00:23:41   everybody laughs and finally somebody [TS]

00:23:44   some you know some trucker grabs me by [TS]

00:23:48   the shirt is like do you realize how [TS]

00:23:51   long this drivers cross the desert and [TS]

00:23:54   he you know he draws a little map on a [TS]

00:23:56   coaster things like here's Africa cheers [TS]

00:24:01   the Sahara here [TS]

00:24:04   are we and here's how long you've [TS]

00:24:06   traveled in the last two weeks you know [TS]

00:24:08   and it had taken me two weeks to go the [TS]

00:24:10   length of a his pinky fingernail and he [TS]

00:24:13   was showing me that the route across the [TS]

00:24:15   desert was from the tip of his finger to [TS]

00:24:17   his elbow you know Wow and he said we [TS]

00:24:20   carry you know we carry three weeks [TS]

00:24:23   worth of water for each person you know [TS]

00:24:27   the trucks these desert these contracts [TS]

00:24:29   across the Sahara these but they're not [TS]

00:24:31   just like semi trucks that these massive [TS]

00:24:34   big tires that massive like desert dune [TS]

00:24:39   buggy type of things and so anyway this [TS]

00:24:42   trucker was like there's no one that's [TS]

00:24:44   ever going to pick up a hitchhiker in [TS]

00:24:46   Zagora and travel with him two and a [TS]

00:24:49   half weeks across the desert like we are [TS]

00:24:52   we are highly paid specialists and this [TS]

00:24:56   is a massive undertaking and well you [TS]

00:25:00   know you're you're just you're way out [TS]

00:25:02   of your league here [TS]

00:25:03   what kind of stuff with a truck across [TS]

00:25:04   that distance so i'm guessing not live [TS]

00:25:08   animals [TS]

00:25:09   no no its you know like the town of [TS]

00:25:12   Timbuktu is out there somewhere there [TS]

00:25:15   are there are they came back to that we [TS]

00:25:18   refer to as out in the middle of nowhere [TS]

00:25:21   yeah the actual Timbuktu is in the [TS]

00:25:23   center of is on that road somewhere and [TS]

00:25:26   you know they they used to all the [TS]

00:25:29   people that live in that massive expanse [TS]

00:25:32   of land used to get all their stuff by [TS]

00:25:34   camel camel caravan and now they now [TS]

00:25:38   these trucks you know provide the [TS]

00:25:40   provide a living to all those people in [TS]

00:25:43   Mali and I mean not only knows i i i i [TS]

00:25:48   barely grasp it even now that the way [TS]

00:25:51   that the way the world works but I'll so [TS]

00:25:55   finally the this whole trip I've been [TS]

00:25:56   taking across rock why i had not looked [TS]

00:25:58   at a map i just i kept heading south and [TS]

00:26:01   I figured I would when I got to [TS]

00:26:03   kilimanjaro I would know because it was [TS]

00:26:04   a mountain [TS]

00:26:06   and when I realized that that Africa is [TS]

00:26:09   so much bigger than I could have [TS]

00:26:12   imagined that trip would have been that [TS]

00:26:14   was a that was a lifetime undertaking [TS]

00:26:18   and I was trying to make it you know [TS]

00:26:20   while listening to the Traveling [TS]

00:26:21   Wilburys and on my waterproof walk [TS]

00:26:24   manner that was that was one of like the [TS]

00:26:30   five moments in my life when I realized [TS]

00:26:32   that I was completely out of my depth [TS]

00:26:35   and and not didn't just need to like go [TS]

00:26:40   go back and regroup but needed to really [TS]

00:26:42   go back and think about how stupid I was [TS]

00:26:46   like put some serious thought into how [TS]

00:26:48   stupid I was and the problem was the [TS]

00:26:51   government zagora and now i'm at the [TS]

00:26:54   edge of the Sahara and I need to get [TS]

00:26:56   back i need to go back north and [TS]

00:26:59   nobody's going north [TS]

00:27:01   everybody's going south nobody's going [TS]

00:27:03   north and i ended up having to end up [TS]

00:27:06   getting a cab but in back and Wars ox a [TS]

00:27:10   guy with a cab and we sat in the public [TS]

00:27:15   square negotiated you know for two hours [TS]

00:27:18   with 25 little kids standing around us [TS]

00:27:20   where he's like all right i'll take you [TS]

00:27:22   i'm not going back to Marrakech but i'll [TS]

00:27:26   take you across you know like his mom or [TS]

00:27:30   whatever lived over and in over by the [TS]

00:27:34   Algerian border or something like that [TS]

00:27:36   and I was like okay I'm alright with you [TS]

00:27:38   and I'll get it ended up being 40 bucks [TS]

00:27:40   or something like that about yeah he [TS]

00:27:43   drove me all the way he told me all such [TS]

00:27:45   an incredible journey of stupidity [TS]

00:27:50   so you were fined by the city your pants [TS]

00:27:52   a lot of time that you you aren't you [TS]

00:27:53   aren't you sound like you have your [TS]

00:27:55   knowledge of geography is obviously very [TS]

00:27:57   strong but you you it wasn't like [TS]

00:27:59   Indiana Jones you see a plane flying [TS]

00:28:01   through the air on a map thing you don't [TS]

00:28:02   have an itinerary just following your [TS]

00:28:03   nose [TS]

00:28:04   no absolutely fall in my nose I did that [TS]

00:28:06   for I did that for a long time and and [TS]

00:28:09   the the great thing is that you can be [TS]

00:28:12   somewhere you can end up somewhere that [TS]

00:28:15   you couldn't have plan to be like for [TS]

00:28:16   instance i was in berlin [TS]

00:28:18   today the wall came down you're kidding [TS]

00:28:22   no you're Selleck no yeah well we have [TS]

00:28:26   maybe a little bit i mean i-i was I've [TS]

00:28:28   been a lot of places where the thing [TS]

00:28:30   happened when I was there I was in [TS]

00:28:31   oakland the day the Oakland fire started [TS]

00:28:34   Wow and I was sitting at the breakfast [TS]

00:28:36   table with the with this girl I knew and [TS]

00:28:39   she looked out of the window and she was [TS]

00:28:41   like what the sky looks weird and I [TS]

00:28:44   looked out and said yeah I got it [TS]

00:28:46   it's like orange the sky is orange it [TS]

00:28:48   was you know eight o'clock in the [TS]

00:28:50   morning that morning and we walked out [TS]

00:28:52   in the yard and the whole hill above her [TS]

00:28:56   house was on fire and we jumped in the [TS]

00:28:58   car and says scary it was amazing we [TS]

00:29:01   jumped in the car and of course you know [TS]

00:29:03   with me behind the wheel and headed [TS]

00:29:04   toward it and drove up into the up into [TS]

00:29:08   oakland until we came 2a we came to a [TS]

00:29:13   place where like waves of fire we're [TS]

00:29:16   going across the street and if we tend [TS]

00:29:19   to continue up the road we would have [TS]

00:29:21   had to have driven under fire and we [TS]

00:29:25   stopped and and suddenly realized that [TS]

00:29:29   this wasn't like hey let's go up and [TS]

00:29:31   look at the fire it was that this was a [TS]

00:29:34   absolutely uncontrolled conflagration [TS]

00:29:37   and we were going to die and we turn the [TS]

00:29:40   car out of people were running you know [TS]

00:29:42   like people were running holding their [TS]

00:29:44   family pets we turned around and headed [TS]

00:29:47   back down the hill and with the fire [TS]

00:29:50   like on our heels and got to a place [TS]

00:29:53   where the fire department blocked off [TS]

00:29:54   the road after we've gone past so we had [TS]

00:29:58   to get through there roadblock headed [TS]

00:30:00   the other way you know in this massive [TS]

00:30:02   stream of people and over the course of [TS]

00:30:05   the day we removed three four different [TS]

00:30:08   times where we would get to a place to [TS]

00:30:09   be like okay who are safe and then the [TS]

00:30:13   tidal wave of fire trees were exploding [TS]

00:30:16   in the air it was the craziest thing [TS]

00:30:18   I've ever seen [TS]

00:30:19   and now you know what was I doing there [TS]

00:30:21   who knows [TS]

00:30:22   but uh but yeah i was in berlin in 89 [TS]

00:30:25   the the day they open the wall and it [TS]

00:30:27   was just because I was like I've been in [TS]

00:30:30   Florence a few days before and somebody [TS]

00:30:32   said that we should go to Berlin and I [TS]

00:30:34   went that's insane [TS]

00:30:35   yeah but the proto the problem of [TS]

00:30:38   traveling that way is that sometimes you [TS]

00:30:40   are one and a half blocks away from the [TS]

00:30:44   world's largest ball of twine and you [TS]

00:30:46   don't and you don't see it because you [TS]

00:30:48   don't know that it's there because you [TS]

00:30:50   never have opened a guidebook looked you [TS]

00:30:53   know you so you just traveling by the [TS]

00:30:55   seat of your pants and you and you [TS]

00:30:56   actually miss some of the stuff that it [TS]

00:30:59   would have been easy to see because just [TS]

00:31:03   like anything different now be today I [TS]

00:31:05   mean as soon as I arrive anywhere i have [TS]

00:31:07   an iphone in my hand the whole time I'm [TS]

00:31:08   somewhere you know who I'm not only my [TS]

00:31:11   relying on the maps john i'm relying on [TS]

00:31:13   the little let me hit the arrow twice to [TS]

00:31:15   show me which direction to walk huh [TS]

00:31:16   right you know and then I add a guy and [TS]

00:31:21   even then I realized it just walked the [TS]

00:31:22   wrong way to starbucks the other way [TS]

00:31:23   some of that stuff like when I was out [TS]

00:31:25   in in in you know in Zagora or certainly [TS]

00:31:30   when I was walking across just for [TS]

00:31:32   reference i'm gonna have we're gonna get [TS]

00:31:33   an intern [TS]

00:31:34   I'm gonna have them go back and Google [TS]

00:31:36   every one of these fake cities that you [TS]

00:31:37   don't are you're not writing these down [TS]

00:31:39   on on three-by-five cards anymore i [TS]

00:31:41   don't hear the three-by-five cards [TS]

00:31:42   flapping a i can't i can't keep up [TS]

00:31:44   anymore I still look at something over [TS]

00:31:46   here all right Thomas Baker but I i'm at [TS]

00:31:48   sag or I started glazing over haha water [TS]

00:31:52   sloshes now that's a hell of a town [TS]

00:31:54   yeah great little town if you're in [TS]

00:31:57   there ever in the neighborhood but [TS]

00:31:58   what's amazing is that during all those [TS]

00:32:00   times like there were weeks weeks and [TS]

00:32:01   weeks at a time when I was completely [TS]

00:32:03   out of touch with the world i didn't [TS]

00:32:05   have such a strange personality will [TS]

00:32:10   stop but it's it's it's so interesting [TS]

00:32:12   to me like you that you can like be okay [TS]

00:32:14   with that much lack of roots you know I [TS]

00:32:17   mean and not knowing anything just [TS]

00:32:19   compared to me were like you know I like [TS]

00:32:21   to make an appointment to go to the [TS]

00:32:22   bathroom like free like it's just [TS]

00:32:24   amazing to me that you could be on the [TS]

00:32:25   road so long I you know not knowing when [TS]

00:32:28   the next meal is not knowing like I [TS]

00:32:30   think you [TS]

00:32:31   well let's get so that's a little crazy [TS]

00:32:33   it's amazing i mean you know in one case [TS]

00:32:35   obviously [TS]

00:32:36   you realize you can't ride across the [TS]

00:32:37   desert but man that's that it's I don't [TS]

00:32:40   say reckless but it's certainly very [TS]

00:32:42   adventurous [TS]

00:32:43   well the greatest thing that ever [TS]

00:32:45   happened to me or the most mind flipping [TS]

00:32:47   thing that ever happened was i I was [TS]

00:32:49   sleeping in a park in them in a V own [TS]

00:32:54   France who which is the site of the the [TS]

00:32:58   song syrup own w/o also where the [TS]

00:33:00   damaged cells live that's where the [TS]

00:33:02   devil cells live there were Pope's there [TS]

00:33:03   for a little bit yeah they had a whole [TS]

00:33:05   second field on the second Pope town but [TS]

00:33:08   i was sleeping in a park in that town [TS]

00:33:09   and I woke up and there was a man [TS]

00:33:11   standing over me in the in the dark and [TS]

00:33:15   I look to my left and I realized that my [TS]

00:33:18   bag was gone my bank had been stolen [TS]

00:33:19   shit and this guy was standing over me [TS]

00:33:22   and he was clearly trying to he was [TS]

00:33:25   bending over trying to figure out how to [TS]

00:33:27   get what he knew was probably my [TS]

00:33:30   passport and my money which was around [TS]

00:33:33   my neck and I jumped you know i squirted [TS]

00:33:38   out of this bag like a like a like jello [TS]

00:33:41   coming out about you know squeeze LOL [TS]

00:33:44   squirter like Joe coming out of a [TS]

00:33:46   jealous water and this guy starts [TS]

00:33:48   running and I start running after him in [TS]

00:33:50   my bare feet and we run and run and run [TS]

00:33:53   all over a video we're running open [TS]

00:33:55   running on the on the little freeway [TS]

00:33:58   were running down by the river where I'm [TS]

00:34:00   chasing this guy and I'm swearing at him [TS]

00:34:02   and keys hiciste and just in front of me [TS]

00:34:06   the whole time and and finally he jumps [TS]

00:34:08   over up like a metal retaining a metal [TS]

00:34:13   like barrier on a highway he he leaps [TS]

00:34:15   over this thing and I leave and I catch [TS]

00:34:18   my toe right on the edge of it and it's [TS]

00:34:20   slammed on the ground I'm all bloody and [TS]

00:34:23   he gets away and I go back to my little [TS]

00:34:27   place where I've been sleeping and [TS]

00:34:29   there's nothing left they came and took [TS]

00:34:30   my sleeping bag while I was to my god [TS]

00:34:32   and suck having young yeah it's well you [TS]

00:34:36   know of France says there's there's a [TS]

00:34:38   there's a lot of people in France that's [TS]

00:34:40   true but in any case i'm walking around [TS]

00:34:42   i do have much they did leave my shoes [TS]

00:34:44   and I can only thing that they left my [TS]

00:34:47   shoes [TS]

00:34:47   [Music] [TS]

00:34:48   as a gesture of human kindness you know [TS]

00:34:51   what I mean [TS]

00:34:51   Bonnie that's right they could have [TS]

00:34:53   taken the shoes too but they left the [TS]

00:34:55   shoes as a as like hey we're not animals [TS]

00:34:59   are not monsters like Germany so I'm [TS]

00:35:04   limping around the mall now let me just [TS]

00:35:06   be clear heat the heat and he was able [TS]

00:35:08   to nab the thing around your neck so [TS]

00:35:09   your passport listen money list and [TS]

00:35:11   really good he was not able to make each [TS]

00:35:13   one teach one kick his ass [TS]

00:35:14   I was gonna kick his ass i was gonna get [TS]

00:35:16   this guy and I was gonna beat him within [TS]

00:35:19   an inch of his life teach my french [TS]

00:35:20   lesson and probably if I had caught him [TS]

00:35:22   he would have knifed me with what he [TS]

00:35:24   surely had in his hand which was surely [TS]

00:35:27   a stiletto like I was stupid to chase [TS]

00:35:30   him and while i was chasing him his [TS]

00:35:33   friends came and stole my sleeping bag [TS]

00:35:34   and probably the guys that had my [TS]

00:35:36   backpack we're standing 25 feet away the [TS]

00:35:39   direction and I should have gone to [TS]

00:35:41   chase them instead but I didn't see them [TS]

00:35:43   i just saw this guy and I was like you [TS]

00:35:45   but in any case i spent a few days [TS]

00:35:48   walking around avion now without a [TS]

00:35:50   sleeping bag at night looking at all the [TS]

00:35:53   trash cans and you know and down all the [TS]

00:35:57   embankment sand under all the bushes for [TS]

00:36:00   them having stripped everything out of [TS]

00:36:04   my bag but like the last but because [TS]

00:36:06   there were some journals i was hoping [TS]

00:36:07   they'd throw the journals in the garbage [TS]

00:36:09   i wanted to get get my journals at least [TS]

00:36:11   through never found anything but I had [TS]

00:36:18   my passport and I had a I had the money [TS]

00:36:22   that I had around my neck and I had some [TS]

00:36:26   people that I was supposed to meet her [TS]

00:36:30   supposed to meet some people was the [TS]

00:36:32   story i'm supposed to meet some people [TS]

00:36:34   in madrid in like eight days [TS]

00:36:37   some people had met earlier that were [TS]

00:36:39   like me to submit on the 15th or [TS]

00:36:41   something I was like I'll me in madrid [TS]

00:36:42   on the 15 so i was in having him and I [TS]

00:36:45   just was like well [TS]

00:36:47   I'm not going to replace all that stuff [TS]

00:36:49   and I just started traveling with the [TS]

00:36:53   clothes on my back [TS]

00:36:54   she's and you know and I was obviously I [TS]

00:36:57   was covered with like blood for a while [TS]

00:37:00   but i watch the blood out of the clothes [TS]

00:37:02   and eventually my my scabs healed and [TS]

00:37:06   for another five months i traveled all [TS]

00:37:10   around Europe in in just the clothes on [TS]

00:37:14   my back and I probably smelled terrible [TS]

00:37:17   i mean i would wash my clothes in the [TS]

00:37:19   sink at youth hostels and stuff and hang [TS]

00:37:22   them up to dry and then in the morning I [TS]

00:37:24   did still be a little damp I put them on [TS]

00:37:25   and and they be driving an hour and it [TS]

00:37:30   was the most liberating experience in my [TS]

00:37:32   life I've never did not realize how free [TS]

00:37:35   you could be I would fight with fall [TS]

00:37:37   asleep on a train right fall asleep on a [TS]

00:37:39   park bench or whatever I wake up and [TS]

00:37:41   just stand up and start walking because [TS]

00:37:43   I had nothing there was no like here let [TS]

00:37:45   me get my stuff let me pack my sleeping [TS]

00:37:47   bag back in its in its bag and what that [TS]

00:37:52   was great and it worked quite well until [TS]

00:37:54   winter came [TS]

00:37:55   ok and then I was screwed the thing that [TS]

00:37:58   you're talking about about about just [TS]

00:38:03   casting yourself loose in the world but [TS]

00:38:07   the people I've admired the most were [TS]

00:38:09   the ones that were able to take it [TS]

00:38:10   further than I wasn't able to do which [TS]

00:38:13   were that they that they severed their [TS]

00:38:15   attachments their mental attachments to [TS]

00:38:20   home which I had it was never able to do [TS]

00:38:23   I i won't mean a they didn't have a home [TS]

00:38:27   base or it didn't matter that they [TS]

00:38:29   didn't have a home base that that [TS]

00:38:32   somehow they either pretended very well [TS]

00:38:35   or they truly did not ever want to go [TS]

00:38:38   see their mom again they never what they [TS]

00:38:41   never dreamt of going back going home to [TS]

00:38:44   see their mom and having Christmas at [TS]

00:38:47   home with their mom [TS]

00:38:49   and no matter how far out i would get it [TS]

00:38:53   no matter how much i was out sleeping [TS]

00:38:56   under a tree somewhere and by all [TS]

00:38:58   appearances like um just if somebody [TS]

00:39:01   come along and said come with me to Abu [TS]

00:39:05   Dhabi i would have said absolutely here [TS]

00:39:08   we go [TS]

00:39:09   but as I'm sitting there under the tree [TS]

00:39:12   I'm thinking I'm like dreaming of home [TS]

00:39:16   you know and it was a mental connection [TS]

00:39:19   to to home that I couldn't sever and the [TS]

00:39:28   people that were that I saw out there [TS]

00:39:30   one when I was living at that close to [TS]

00:39:34   the edge I guess if you you know the [TS]

00:39:36   edge of being like outside of [TS]

00:39:41   civilization the people that I admired [TS]

00:39:46   that I would meet sometimes who had a [TS]

00:39:47   look of like of the of real dastardly [TS]

00:39:52   self-possession I don't I didn't sense [TS]

00:39:57   in them that they had any desire to ever [TS]

00:39:59   go home [TS]

00:40:00   why would you even do that because I [TS]

00:40:04   would because I didn't because I kept [TS]

00:40:07   feeling like I was tethered that I [TS]

00:40:09   wasn't that I that I that I wasn't brave [TS]

00:40:11   enough to to sever that connection you [TS]

00:40:19   know and in a way it might be that that [TS]

00:40:20   connection is what safe [TS]

00:40:22   it saved my life multiple times that's [TS]

00:40:24   why I never did intravenous drugs [TS]

00:40:26   because there were a lot of things that [TS]

00:40:31   I could there are a lot of things that I [TS]

00:40:32   did that I did not that that connection [TS]

00:40:35   to home didn't interfere with my choice [TS]

00:40:38   to do bad things but there were certain [TS]

00:40:40   bad things i never did I did not ever [TS]

00:40:42   steal I didn't ever you know like the [TS]

00:40:47   third there were a to live that life and [TS]

00:40:50   and yet to have a personal prohibition [TS]

00:40:53   on ever stealing like shoplifting a [TS]

00:40:56   thing of yogurt or whatever it was [TS]

00:40:58   beneath my dignity and that was because [TS]

00:41:00   of this idea [TS]

00:41:02   of home that I had and you know [TS]

00:41:04   particularly of one day walking back in [TS]

00:41:08   through the front door my mother's house [TS]

00:41:11   and i think it's a it's saved me [TS]

00:41:13   multiple times but at the time I [TS]

00:41:15   recognized it was the thing that kept me [TS]

00:41:17   from being truly wild all the way wild [TS]

00:41:21   and those people that were all the way [TS]

00:41:24   wild I really you know I really admired [TS]

00:41:28   them sitting around the campfires with [TS]

00:41:30   them and seeing that look in their eye [TS]

00:41:32   and that might have been a put-on to you [TS]

00:41:35   know that I don't up people are capable [TS]

00:41:37   of putting that look this is what you're [TS]

00:41:40   describing now is on this could be the [TS]

00:41:42   same things might be a phospholipid on [TS]

00:41:44   the one hand you're talking about [TS]

00:41:46   something very close to monasticism or [TS]

00:41:48   or this idea of being free of I don't [TS]

00:41:52   say attachment is maybe to buddhist of a [TS]

00:41:55   word but being being free of of the of [TS]

00:41:58   the yearning for for things not one not [TS]

00:42:02   only not missing it but not finding [TS]

00:42:04   yourself you know yearning for the [TS]

00:42:05   things you missed on the other end [TS]

00:42:07   you're talking about fucking Psychopaths [TS]

00:42:08   right there is and you're absolutely [TS]

00:42:10   right [TS]

00:42:11   very natural it's very I would have had [TS]

00:42:13   maybe i'm justin m at middle American [TS]

00:42:15   which I am but it seems like that desire [TS]

00:42:18   to have a place in the tribe goes way [TS]

00:42:22   beyond you know people who are born in [TS]

00:42:25   the sixties that that's a pretty old [TS]

00:42:26   idea [TS]

00:42:27   yeah and that was precisely why I wanted [TS]

00:42:30   to get away from it you know the line [TS]

00:42:32   between being a great monk between being [TS]

00:42:34   like a true monk and being a total [TS]

00:42:37   psychopath is a pretty nebulous line you [TS]

00:42:41   know the the great the great mystics are [TS]

00:42:44   all reviled in their in their own time [TS]

00:42:47   and a lot of our fucking nuts Tim well a [TS]

00:42:50   lot of them are nuts and a lot of them [TS]

00:42:52   are burned at the stake for being nuts [TS]

00:42:53   but there but but oh but the work that [TS]

00:42:56   they do the mystical work that they do [TS]

00:42:59   pushing pushing on behalf of all ppl [TS]

00:43:03   outward always outward who two [TS]

00:43:06   generations later we Revere them and we [TS]

00:43:09   read their writings and I think that [TS]

00:43:10   they are that they were the great [TS]

00:43:12   but there that they were the great [TS]

00:43:14   leaders and in fact in their own time [TS]

00:43:16   they were you know they were chased out [TS]

00:43:18   of the village I'm so I you know I [TS]

00:43:22   didn't have a sixties affectation past a [TS]

00:43:24   certain point I wasn't trying to like go [TS]

00:43:27   further as management people of our of [TS]

00:43:29   our generation and mandarin and then [TS]

00:43:31   that was the impetus initially like hey [TS]

00:43:34   man let's go [TS]

00:43:35   was there any kind of like a beats sort [TS]

00:43:37   of influence [TS]

00:43:38   no no I hated all that shit is that [TS]

00:43:40   right or not very long i mean i like [TS]

00:43:41   bubbles and have not had no idea that is [TS]

00:43:45   all balls he wrote the sheltering sky [TS]

00:43:48   ok but but he wrote he wrote a lot of [TS]

00:43:50   great short stories and he translated a [TS]

00:43:52   lot of um translated from arabic a lot [TS]

00:43:56   of Sir full details as told to him by [TS]

00:43:59   his moroccan houseboy mohamed mohamed [TS]

00:44:03   mohabbat who was this sort of great [TS]

00:44:07   ended up being this great moroccan [TS]

00:44:09   writer but no I was at the beach and all [TS]

00:44:13   that stuff it's just that that all [TS]

00:44:15   seemed very like look back look look at [TS]

00:44:17   back in itself and i just wanted to see [TS]

00:44:20   what the limits were you know that's all [TS]

00:44:22   those things again it's like the hippies [TS]

00:44:24   or it's like any of that stuff there [TS]

00:44:25   even for that matter people's obsession [TS]

00:44:26   with something like monasticism is in a [TS]

00:44:28   religious context and an hour just in [TS]

00:44:30   the same way that you couldn't keep [TS]

00:44:31   dancing on the on the beach in Spain [TS]

00:44:33   I mean that you know it people's [TS]

00:44:35   attachment to that kind of stuff even [TS]

00:44:37   though it's the attachment to a kind of [TS]

00:44:39   freedom [TS]

00:44:41   I mean it's like being attached to like [TS]

00:44:42   the thanksgiving dinner you had a 98 [TS]

00:44:44   it's gone like that it's not a thing [TS]

00:44:46   anymore you're not gonna you're not [TS]

00:44:47   gonna recreate that and that's we get [TS]

00:44:50   into somebody like me I guess in the [TS]

00:44:51   tourism you know like like heroin [TS]

00:44:52   tourism [TS]

00:44:53   I mean you know what I mean it's like [TS]

00:44:54   you're it'sit's such difference to be [TS]

00:44:56   somebody who travels in order to like I [TS]

00:44:59   ok here's a classic example and I've [TS]

00:45:01   certainly been guilty of this everywhere [TS]

00:45:02   I've ever gone somebody comes to san [TS]

00:45:04   francisco and what do they say they say [TS]

00:45:06   well we're going to Fisherman's Wharf [TS]

00:45:08   you know we're gonna go eat chocolate [TS]

00:45:11   sure you got any Alcatraz you worked out [TS]

00:45:13   all into one five day adventure hell and [TS]

00:45:17   you know i i'm i'm not a native San [TS]

00:45:19   Franciscan but in the in the most you [TS]

00:45:22   know use the way i can try to say well [TS]

00:45:24   you should [TS]

00:45:24   that stuff and get your photos and stuff [TS]

00:45:26   the really i would not block out more [TS]

00:45:28   than half a day for that Alcatraz super [TS]

00:45:30   fun but really there isn't you when you [TS]

00:45:32   go to any of those peers you're going to [TS]

00:45:35   get the same experience with slightly [TS]

00:45:37   different weather and slightly different [TS]

00:45:39   clothes [TS]

00:45:39   it's the same experience you would get [TS]

00:45:41   in a touristy part of gatlinburg or a [TS]

00:45:44   touristy part of fort myers like you're [TS]

00:45:46   getting the international tourist [TS]

00:45:48   experience there it's just there's crab [TS]

00:45:50   and its kind of costly but that's the [TS]

00:45:52   thing if you come to san francisco and [TS]

00:45:53   again I don't think don't go see the [TS]

00:45:55   golden gate bridge is fucking amazing [TS]

00:45:56   but you know that there's a certain kind [TS]

00:45:59   of approach to that stuff where that [TS]

00:46:00   wanderlusts reads as I wanna get my [TS]

00:46:03   picture taken at the Eiffel Tower right [TS]

00:46:05   versus like I'm gonna you know go ask [TS]

00:46:07   some guy is making maps of the [TS]

00:46:09   thumbnails he can drive me to a giant [TS]

00:46:10   man haha that's a day though here's the [TS]

00:46:15   funny thing like I don't know it's 22 [TS]

00:46:17   inch of conscious but now today your man [TS]

00:46:18   who collects candles [TS]

00:46:19   yeah and I think about that all the time [TS]

00:46:22   at some point along the way I realized [TS]

00:46:26   and what happened was I realized that [TS]

00:46:28   citizenship [TS]

00:46:30   this was the this was the big moment for [TS]

00:46:32   me that citizenship is an all-in [TS]

00:46:34   proposition and you see this all the [TS]

00:46:37   time with with them with young people [TS]

00:46:40   not just the street punks street punks [TS]

00:46:43   are on one sort of side of the of of [TS]

00:46:47   this bell curve street punks all the way [TS]

00:46:50   up to hippie hippy dippy you know I [TS]

00:46:54   don't wear leather shoes sort of people [TS]

00:46:56   people who are trying to they're trying [TS]

00:47:01   to limit the number of ways in which [TS]

00:47:03   they are fully vested in their [TS]

00:47:05   citizenship right they say yes i agree [TS]

00:47:09   that we should have driver's licenses [TS]

00:47:10   this is the Tea Party problem right I [TS]

00:47:13   agree that we should have driver's [TS]

00:47:14   licenses but i don't agree that I should [TS]

00:47:17   have to have insurance you know they're [TS]

00:47:20   trying to they're trying to set their [TS]

00:47:21   own line somewhere in the sand where [TS]

00:47:24   they on one side of the line are all the [TS]

00:47:25   citizenship things that they personally [TS]

00:47:28   agree to and then on the other side of [TS]

00:47:32   the liner all these other citizenship [TS]

00:47:33   things that they feel are [TS]

00:47:35   you know unnecessary or restrict too [TS]

00:47:38   restrictive or for whatever reason they [TS]

00:47:41   they choose not to choose that used to [TS]

00:47:44   think that they don't have to play and [TS]

00:47:47   there was a moment for me because I live [TS]

00:47:49   without ID for many years and I lived in [TS]

00:47:53   the city and I didn't have ID so i could [TS]

00:47:56   not go into bars i could not I did not [TS]

00:48:00   have a bank account when a policeman [TS]

00:48:02   stopped me I had to explain that I [TS]

00:48:05   didn't have ID and get it in the [TS]

00:48:07   inevitable lecture from the guy and they [TS]

00:48:11   never you know they were they never took [TS]

00:48:12   me allowed to not have an ID it can be [TS]

00:48:14   arrested for not presenting [TS]

00:48:15   identification [TS]

00:48:16   yeah you can be you're not allowed to [TS]

00:48:19   but when a cop stops you for something [TS]

00:48:21   and you don't have ID [TS]

00:48:23   it's really low on his list of [TS]

00:48:25   priorities like I'm gonna take this kid [TS]

00:48:27   to jail for no ID so you get a stern [TS]

00:48:30   talking-to you need ID it's important [TS]

00:48:33   you need to go get some identification [TS]

00:48:35   because I could verify my identity to [TS]

00:48:38   them it would take us 45 minutes of me [TS]

00:48:41   explaining who I was and telling my [TS]

00:48:43   social security number and all this [TS]

00:48:45   stuff you know like but in the long run [TS]

00:48:49   i did not have ID because i had drawn [TS]

00:48:52   the line somewhere on on how much I was [TS]

00:48:55   willing to participate in in mice in the [TS]

00:49:00   civilization i was living in and I had [TS]

00:49:03   this moment where i was watching someone [TS]

00:49:05   else a person I knew who was you know [TS]

00:49:09   very much like opposed to the cops and [TS]

00:49:13   opposed to the laws and opposed to the [TS]

00:49:15   man and this person you know encountered [TS]

00:49:20   some difficulties at one point and [TS]

00:49:22   called the police to come help them and [TS]

00:49:27   bitched about the police response and [TS]

00:49:33   then when the police got there they [TS]

00:49:35   whined to the police and the police were [TS]

00:49:38   like yeah you're kinda he kind of made [TS]

00:49:40   your bed in this situation but sure [TS]

00:49:44   we'll look for the guy that you know [TS]

00:49:46   stole your weed that did your own right [TS]

00:49:48   when you call the cops because we got [TS]

00:49:50   stolen look for the guy that stole your [TS]

00:49:51   weed exactly and then they leave and [TS]

00:49:54   this person commences to like talking [TS]

00:49:56   shit about the cops again and I realized [TS]

00:49:58   if you're if you are living outside if [TS]

00:50:03   you want to live outside and of the of [TS]

00:50:05   the rules if you don't want to follow [TS]

00:50:07   all the rules then you should then you [TS]

00:50:10   should also not have any recourse to the [TS]

00:50:13   benefits you can't call the cops if [TS]

00:50:16   someone steals your weed and if you sit [TS]

00:50:18   and talk shit about the cops then don't [TS]

00:50:20   call them and of course no one is what I [TS]

00:50:24   mean they're the people that are willing [TS]

00:50:25   that truly do live outside the world and [TS]

00:50:29   when somebody beats the shit out of them [TS]

00:50:31   and steals all their stuff they don't [TS]

00:50:32   call the cops because they recognize [TS]

00:50:35   that the cops will never help them [TS]

00:50:37   they're truly outside the world those [TS]

00:50:39   people we've lived desperate lives and [TS]

00:50:43   if you're not willing if you're not [TS]

00:50:46   going to live at the at the edge of [TS]

00:50:48   desperation you're really your only [TS]

00:50:50   other option is to be fully vested as a [TS]

00:50:53   citizen you need to have if you have a [TS]

00:50:57   driver's license you need to have [TS]

00:50:58   insurance if you you know if you are [TS]

00:51:02   saying I mean so you're saying it's not [TS]

00:51:03   a buffet in the same way and in the [TS]

00:51:04   marathon for hours that we cut out of [TS]

00:51:06   our discussion was before it's not about [TS]

00:51:08   that you saying you can't come in and [TS]

00:51:10   pick that this is what I decided to be [TS]

00:51:12   an atom mentally evangelistic about this [TS]

00:51:17   is the part that I've decided I is too [TS]

00:51:19   inconvenient [TS]

00:51:20   yeah exactly you cannot you cannot [TS]

00:51:22   refuse to pay your taxes and still drive [TS]

00:51:26   on the roads and bridges who you know [TS]

00:51:28   you cannot you cannot say that that we [TS]

00:51:32   shouldn't that if you don't have chick [TS]

00:51:34   kids you shouldn't pay taxes for the [TS]

00:51:35   schools and then walk down the street [TS]

00:51:38   and complain about the kid about the [TS]

00:51:40   youth of America when I like the the [TS]

00:51:43   decisions about about what constitutes [TS]

00:51:46   full membership in in society those [TS]

00:51:51   decisions are not being made by one [TS]

00:51:52   person up above who's like here are the [TS]

00:51:54   rules you have to follow it that those [TS]

00:51:56   are decisions that we have made [TS]

00:51:58   collectively as a group of people over [TS]

00:52:00   many many many hugs [TS]

00:52:02   of years and it's like this is just what [TS]

00:52:05   it's a lot of responsibility to be a [TS]

00:52:06   fully vested human being and it it [TS]

00:52:09   requires all this stuff and it isn't to [TS]

00:52:12   buffet you if you live in the culture [TS]

00:52:15   you do you have to do all the stuff and [TS]

00:52:17   you're not a rebel by refusing to do by [TS]

00:52:21   refusing to do one thing from column a [TS]

00:52:23   and refusing to do one thing from column [TS]

00:52:25   B you know it isn't you're not a rebel [TS]

00:52:27   you're just being a brat you know and [TS]

00:52:31   and you can if you don't like paying [TS]

00:52:33   taxes you can absolutely make your case [TS]

00:52:36   in the public square but you cannot [TS]

00:52:38   refuse to pay them it isn't an option [TS]

00:52:41   and you are a brat if you think that it [TS]

00:52:43   is an option just being a baby so and [TS]

00:52:47   and I came to that understanding by [TS]

00:52:52   living with feeds for for a long time [TS]

00:52:56   living living a not all the way out [TS]

00:53:00   still attached to home you know not all [TS]

00:53:03   the way out ware if the cops if some if [TS]

00:53:06   somebody beat me up [TS]

00:53:07   I wouldn't call the cops and not only [TS]

00:53:08   that but the cops would beat me up [TS]

00:53:10   you know I wasn't living all the way out [TS]

00:53:12   i was living on the fringe with with [TS]

00:53:15   with people that were also living on the [TS]

00:53:17   fringe but but they still sucked off of [TS]

00:53:21   civilization and I and I found it I [TS]

00:53:25   found it disgusting [TS]

00:53:26   ultimately I think you might be lawful [TS]

00:53:29   neutral from I was not lawful neutral [TS]

00:53:35   was one of the most interesting [TS]

00:53:36   alignments because they're you know [TS]

00:53:38   there's always that you get a lot of [TS]

00:53:40   lawful good like you're gonna be a [TS]

00:53:41   paladin you gotta be lawful good i'll be [TS]

00:53:43   lawful good for Fifi's lot of thieves [TS]

00:53:45   end up being chaotic good right or what [TS]

00:53:50   does it do [TS]

00:53:51   you don't mean like there's always [TS]

00:53:51   different alignments but I was that [TS]

00:53:53   lawful neutral was really interesting [TS]

00:53:54   because it wasn't really a matter of [TS]

00:53:56   obviously of good of good or evil [TS]

00:53:59   it was a matter of like you know you [TS]

00:54:02   know saying I always thought that was [TS]

00:54:03   very interesting that like themselves [TS]

00:54:04   like what you're describing is in a [TS]

00:54:06   weird way even though you are an [TS]

00:54:08   outsider in many of your ways you're [TS]

00:54:09   saying that if you take part of the [TS]

00:54:11   system you take the whole system and [TS]

00:54:12   that is in some sense the law don't you [TS]

00:54:14   call it ethics [TS]

00:54:15   the ethics would be a better word for it [TS]

00:54:16   but you're saying you you gotta buy into [TS]

00:54:18   the whole system [TS]

00:54:20   yeah but that I think that is a lawful [TS]

00:54:22   neutral revelation that I had within the [TS]

00:54:25   context of being ultimately chaotic good [TS]

00:54:28   that's what I always like to think i was [TS]

00:54:29   chaotic good lot of dickheads our cat [TS]

00:54:32   good [TS]

00:54:33   well I maybe I may be vulnerable to that [TS]

00:54:38   no no I'm talking about my socket i'm [TS]

00:54:39   talking about myself now at the cake and [TS]

00:54:42   good is what is the most passive [TS]

00:54:44   aggressive alignment you could choose to [TS]

00:54:46   give yourself really don't you think [TS]

00:54:48   no I think that I think using the word [TS]

00:54:51   good i think this is this is something [TS]

00:54:54   this is a very key distinction that [TS]

00:54:57   people have mistakin the word good for [TS]

00:55:01   being synonymous with the word nice [TS]

00:55:03   oh I was just talking about 17 d terms [TS]

00:55:05   but no an open area but as in life I [TS]

00:55:09   think a good guy walks around going hey [TS]

00:55:10   you know I'm a handful but I'm a nice [TS]

00:55:12   guy [TS]

00:55:13   no I think I think good i think good is [TS]

00:55:17   is perhaps one of the most powerful [TS]

00:55:21   words in the English language like good [TS]

00:55:24   is not something that you seek good is [TS]

00:55:28   not nice like good is the pursuit of of [TS]

00:55:33   capital a capital g get ya what you [TS]

00:55:36   understand to be truth [TS]

00:55:38   uh-huh and if you are pursuing good and [TS]

00:55:41   seeking it it by any means necessary [TS]

00:55:44   that that is how you get chaotic but but [TS]

00:55:49   you are chasing after you are chasing [TS]

00:55:51   after the good huh [TS]

00:55:53   and that is often very counter to what [TS]

00:55:56   two nice because in a situation where [TS]

00:56:00   you are where you aspire to being good [TS]

00:56:02   you can be in a social situation which [TS]

00:56:05   we often are where the social currency [TS]

00:56:09   is one of really compromised ethics you [TS]

00:56:13   know everybody in the group is getting [TS]

00:56:15   along great they're all really nice [TS]

00:56:16   people but you know what they're all [TS]

00:56:18   kind of liars [TS]

00:56:20   and that there is a tremendous premium [TS]

00:56:24   put on just going along with the lie [TS]

00:56:26   going along with the lie that they're [TS]

00:56:28   telling themselves going along with the [TS]

00:56:29   lie that is happening at this party [TS]

00:56:31   going along with the overall live in his [TS]

00:56:34   governing our modern culture you know [TS]

00:56:37   and to be to truly be good [TS]

00:56:41   you have to stand in that group of [TS]

00:56:42   people and say no I will not I do not [TS]

00:56:44   agree with your lie i do not i will not [TS]

00:56:46   participate in your life passively just [TS]

00:56:50   in order to make this a happy party or [TS]

00:56:53   to make everybody feel fine and it's [TS]

00:56:55   what it's I feel like a lot of times I [TS]

00:56:58   am accused of being an asshole or being [TS]

00:57:00   being caustic presence because I in [TS]

00:57:05   every situation I try and I try and stay [TS]

00:57:08   the course of what i think is my own [TS]

00:57:11   ethical responsibility and that is the [TS]

00:57:15   pursuit of what is good not the pursuit [TS]

00:57:17   of what is nice but doesn't that beat [TS]

00:57:20   down [TS]

00:57:20   it sounds like I i we we don't want to [TS]

00:57:23   get into one of those things i have to [TS]

00:57:24   cut out but i'm curious that just [TS]

00:57:27   because you're you're you're very you're [TS]

00:57:29   tough on people who are inside of a [TS]

00:57:32   system and don't adopt the whole system [TS]

00:57:33   and our what systems are you a hundred [TS]

00:57:38   percent bought into that you would you [TS]

00:57:41   accept hundred percent of well that's [TS]

00:57:43   the thing the system of law that governs [TS]

00:57:45   our scrap is deeply flawed one so it's [TS]

00:57:49   also for as many from Alaska you must [TS]

00:57:51   really realize it is also very [TS]

00:57:52   contradictory a very potter paradoxical [TS]

00:57:54   there's there's two very different [TS]

00:57:56   threads in in our great American history [TS]

00:58:00   and culture that along the way or keep [TS]

00:58:02   running into you keep running into each [TS]

00:58:03   other right [TS]

00:58:04   the sense of the Wild West and [TS]

00:58:05   exploration and sense of fair play right [TS]

00:58:08   and a sense of profit motive of course [TS]

00:58:10   so there's a lot of things you can [TS]

00:58:11   account for by picking which one of [TS]

00:58:12   those directions you think is the good [TS]

00:58:14   well sure II and recognizing that the [TS]

00:58:19   good doesn't really like in any one of [TS]

00:58:20   those directions but those are all that [TS]

00:58:22   those are all the necessities are they [TS]

00:58:24   are all yet like you are person you can [TS]

00:58:28   pursue the good while living within [TS]

00:58:30   these systems but you can't you know in [TS]

00:58:34   there and they're absolutely laws that I [TS]

00:58:36   that I do not deign to follow you know [TS]

00:58:40   what I mean there i make those choices [TS]

00:58:41   all the time [TS]

00:58:43   individual laws that I say in this [TS]

00:58:44   instance I'm gonna break this law [TS]

00:58:46   because because I know better and that [TS]

00:58:50   is kind of the that's where that idea [TS]

00:58:53   breaks down but but within that within [TS]

00:58:57   the concept of like up of government and [TS]

00:59:01   the the way that are the weather Society [TS]

00:59:05   runs the appeal to Authority the the [TS]

00:59:10   bureaucracy that keeps the lights on [TS]

00:59:12   that keeps the that when you flush the [TS]

00:59:14   toilet it goes away and doesn't just [TS]

00:59:16   empty out into the garden like all that [TS]

00:59:19   stuff I take as I take as a whole system [TS]

00:59:22   and i don't i don't Brooke a lot of like [TS]

00:59:27   well I don't know I don't pay my share [TS]

00:59:30   of that because I don't because I [TS]

00:59:32   disagree with the put with the woman [TS]

00:59:34   that got appointed to that job or [TS]

00:59:36   whatever her zooming back [TS]

00:59:40   yeah I want to be I want to always [TS]

00:59:42   aspire to make the good choice rather [TS]

00:59:45   than the expedient choice and that often [TS]

00:59:49   is in conflict with the law that is a [TS]

00:59:51   that is a paradox [TS]

00:59:53   um and you know at two o'clock in the [TS]

00:59:57   morning and i'm sitting at a red light [TS]

00:59:59   and I will [TS]

00:59:59   and I will [TS]

01:00:00   both directions and there's no car [TS]

01:00:01   coming I i go through the light it is a [TS]

01:00:05   choice really [TS]

01:00:06   thank you for is to join that I [TS]

01:00:10   routinely make that there are traffic [TS]

01:00:12   laws that at a certain hour of the day [TS]

01:00:15   in certain situations traffic laws go [TS]

01:00:18   from being laws to being suggestions [TS]

01:00:22   well I think that went to the next level [TS]

01:00:24   here's the one that I think this is not [TS]

01:00:25   necessarily a person that I admire but [TS]

01:00:28   it's someone I kind of admire and that [TS]

01:00:29   somebody who would say in that instance [TS]

01:00:31   like arrest me all you want this is just [TS]

01:00:34   a thing I'm gonna do right which i think [TS]

01:00:36   is kind of its the maybe not the [TS]

01:00:39   opposite but it's very very different [TS]

01:00:41   from somebody saying I you know I hate [TS]

01:00:43   the police except for when somebody [TS]

01:00:45   breaks in and steals my figurines or [TS]

01:00:47   something like that you know i mean [TS]

01:00:48   there's something interesting and [TS]

01:00:50   dangerous about the the true like [TS]

01:00:53   conscientious objector [TS]

01:00:54   who says you know i'm breaking this law [TS]

01:00:57   i know i'm breaking this law and I don't [TS]

01:01:00   even have to give you a reason why and [TS]

01:01:02   the system it can feel free to just [TS]

01:01:04   Jimmy up and its gears because that's [TS]

01:01:05   the decision that I've made I think [TS]

01:01:06   that's a very interesting and [TS]

01:01:07   potentially dangerous to society kind of [TS]

01:01:10   person that I'm not judging that but I'm [TS]

01:01:12   just saying that's the kind of person [TS]

01:01:13   everybody's relying on at people to at [TS]

01:01:16   least hope they don't get caught but if [TS]

01:01:18   you truly are that kind of somebody with [TS]

01:01:19   nothing to lose [TS]

01:01:20   sort of as you were describing it mean [TS]

01:01:22   that somebody that society has no idea [TS]

01:01:24   how to deal with ya a it they fill that [TS]

01:01:28   they feel a kind of monastic role [TS]

01:01:30   they're the people that that sit [TS]

01:01:32   indian-style in the public square and [TS]

01:01:34   poured gasoline on themselves and and [TS]

01:01:36   immolate themselves to protest the [TS]

01:01:38   bombing of laos in America of course [TS]

01:01:43   nobody nobody immolate themselves really [TS]

01:01:45   that much but the conscientious objector [TS]

01:01:50   like that is again like I like you're [TS]

01:01:54   saying I admire them [TS]

01:01:55   I admire them above all else and it's [TS]

01:01:58   not always because I I am admire what [TS]

01:02:03   they what what they're after but but [TS]

01:02:06   that you know that's nonviolent [TS]

01:02:07   resistance that's Gandhi that's Martin [TS]

01:02:09   Luther King [TS]

01:02:10   it's why I don't admire that the tea [TS]

01:02:14   party so much because there's a lot of [TS]

01:02:19   you know there's a lot of talk of [TS]

01:02:21   violence resistance in that group of [TS]

01:02:25   people and violent overthrow is a thing [TS]

01:02:30   that you know when it's time for violent [TS]

01:02:32   overthrow everybody knows it [TS]

01:02:34   it's not a thing that you it's not a [TS]

01:02:36   thing that you sit out in the in your [TS]

01:02:38   little hot tamale anything like I've [TS]

01:02:41   always said this about social media that [TS]

01:02:42   and add that the social media is not [TS]

01:02:45   what you have to say it's what other [TS]

01:02:46   people have to say about you and people [TS]

01:02:48   who are really interested in violence [TS]

01:02:50   I wonder how interested they are in the [TS]

01:02:52   violence if they were thinking about it [TS]

01:02:53   as ten times more violence on them in [TS]

01:02:55   their family then they have thought of [TS]

01:02:57   it doesn't matter if you going out with [TS]

01:02:59   a gun and acting like a big shot like [TS]

01:03:00   imagine your family getting their [TS]

01:03:01   throats slit in the night [TS]

01:03:02   that's violence right violence is not [TS]

01:03:04   your fantasy from watching cable TV and [TS]

01:03:07   buying a gun violence is you're [TS]

01:03:09   completely out of control and there's no [TS]

01:03:10   one there to help you that's that's [TS]

01:03:12   violence right and that gets lost on a [TS]

01:03:15   lot of people but if you're a tea party [TS]

01:03:16   then i'm going to talk about fast food [TS]

01:03:17   activism because people asking it known [TS]

01:03:20   and that's probably a different thing [TS]

01:03:22   but that's that's that's that's what [TS]

01:03:23   gets me is just the the pious pneus that [TS]

01:03:26   people have about the supposed to desire [TS]

01:03:28   for change that mean that comes down to [TS]

01:03:30   what they put on twitter but that I i [TS]

01:03:32   cannot hide the fact that drives me [TS]

01:03:34   completely insane I don't know how that [TS]

01:03:35   fits into your world view about about [TS]

01:03:37   the the the cohesiveness of buying into [TS]

01:03:42   the system but man when you talk about [TS]

01:03:44   changing and talk about trying to make [TS]

01:03:46   something better it's just I don't feel [TS]

01:03:48   so at odds are certainly lots of cases [TS]

01:03:50   where that has made a difference but i [TS]

01:03:52   think by and large it is so cheap in the [TS]

01:03:54   idea that if you care a lot about [TS]

01:03:56   something you can see change affected by [TS]

01:03:59   direct action [TS]

01:04:00   yeah Kony 2012 but what's that what's [TS]

01:04:06   that what's that times you know for just [TS]

01:04:09   a second i got kinda hungry is that [TS]

01:04:11   you're talking about having chili dog [TS]

01:04:13   yeah Cody dog honey island I think [TS]

01:04:16   there's a favorite entertaining dogs [TS]

01:04:18   yeah i would do give me a Coney dog [TS]

01:04:20   right now [TS]

01:04:21   it's a failure of people's imaginations [TS]

01:04:23   to imagine the worst case scenario [TS]

01:04:26   personally you know which is something [TS]

01:04:28   that it that you have done something [TS]

01:04:30   that I have been my whole life [TS]

01:04:32   what if my one of my big plan actually [TS]

01:04:34   worked out how would that go right [TS]

01:04:36   exactly what i would that really you [TS]

01:04:39   know like two months later [TS]

01:04:40   what is that going to look like and you [TS]

01:04:44   know it's a very popular thing in the [TS]

01:04:45   popular in the in the youth culture now [TS]

01:04:47   to think about zombies the little bit [TS]

01:04:51   war of you against the zombies zombies [TS]

01:04:54   zombies is once you start thinking about [TS]

01:04:55   him it's hard to stop thinking about him [TS]

01:04:57   that's the ministry's I'm a pretty I'm a [TS]

01:04:58   pretty I like to think I'm a pretty [TS]

01:05:00   rational person but just even a little [TS]

01:05:02   bit of exposure to zombies it gets me [TS]

01:05:04   thinking about zombies you start [TS]

01:05:06   thinking about zombies I don't love I [TS]

01:05:07   don't love it but i mean it's it's the [TS]

01:05:09   kind of thing where I you know I think I [TS]

01:05:12   think we are you know a lot of people [TS]

01:05:14   enjoy the occasional apocalypse scenario [TS]

01:05:16   certainly is a great feature speculative [TS]

01:05:18   fiction that I've enjoyed but i know i [TS]

01:05:20   think once you start thinking about [TS]

01:05:21   zombies boy because they don't care they [TS]

01:05:23   don't fucking care they're zombies are [TS]

01:05:24   literally zombies right point and then [TS]

01:05:27   idea the right there you know and this [TS]

01:05:28   is again like all of the great matter no [TS]

01:05:31   sci-fi speculation everyone thought like [TS]

01:05:33   all the best stuff you know it's a way [TS]

01:05:35   of telling the story about something you [TS]

01:05:37   otherwise could not have told a story [TS]

01:05:38   about not always not always something [TS]

01:05:40   two spaceships you don't mean but that [TS]

01:05:41   that's what makes this kind of thing so [TS]

01:05:43   great in that instance talk about [TS]

01:05:44   violence where some violence [TS]

01:05:46   here's somebody that you can't you can't [TS]

01:05:48   explain things to and and we don't like [TS]

01:05:51   people that we can't reason with and [TS]

01:05:53   where we can least try to bring to our [TS]

01:05:55   point of view but also somebody who's [TS]

01:05:57   just not even receptive to any plea that [TS]

01:06:00   you have about why they should not eat [TS]

01:06:02   your brain [TS]

01:06:03   yeah that's that's a very troubling idea [TS]

01:06:05   and that that you know and that they [TS]

01:06:06   really are just such a simple machine [TS]

01:06:07   and that's that sounds silly in sci-fi [TS]

01:06:09   and I guess it is but isn't that [TS]

01:06:11   ultimately what we fear with something [TS]

01:06:12   like up like a police state or something [TS]

01:06:14   I mean like cultural while you're here [TS]

01:06:16   yeah well we fear we fear like loosely [TS]

01:06:18   organized violence you know the people [TS]

01:06:21   that can't be dissuaded that it's a bad [TS]

01:06:23   idea [TS]

01:06:24   well it's the fantasy that that suburban [TS]

01:06:26   whites have about inner-city blacks that [TS]

01:06:29   they are that you can't reason with them [TS]

01:06:32   is what everybody should watch the wire [TS]

01:06:33   that's [TS]

01:06:34   I'm Sam yeah i know that the cheap like [TS]

01:06:36   a thing to say but let's not that you're [TS]

01:06:38   talking about that's you know I i was in [TS]

01:06:39   my 40s before that really hit me over [TS]

01:06:41   the head that everybody's corrupted by a [TS]

01:06:43   system you know i mean it's it's from [TS]

01:06:45   the first of opening scene of the wire [TS]

01:06:47   if you watch the DVD with the commentary [TS]

01:06:49   so what really struck me about it is the [TS]

01:06:51   guy saying that the wire is ultimately [TS]

01:06:53   about him the American city [TS]

01:06:55   yeah ask that wasn't David Simon or [TS]

01:06:57   whatever that you know in a recent [TS]

01:06:58   interview they asked him what was your [TS]

01:06:59   four you know people asking whose [TS]

01:07:01   favorite character on the wire and he [TS]

01:07:02   says absolutely the city of Baltimore [TS]

01:07:04   because it is this living thing and [TS]

01:07:06   everybody in it is getting fucked up by [TS]

01:07:08   some system and if you think being a cop [TS]

01:07:11   is making you any less fucked up by a [TS]

01:07:12   system in somebody who's selling selling [TS]

01:07:15   drugs on the corner you have you have no [TS]

01:07:18   idea how complex this stuff is everybody [TS]

01:07:20   fucked up by somebody that's why i love [TS]

01:07:23   it's why I spend so much time down [TS]

01:07:25   watching the the the container freight [TS]

01:07:28   being unloaded off the ship and put on [TS]

01:07:31   trucks i find it very relaxing [TS]

01:07:33   it's incredible and I I for many years I [TS]

01:07:35   have gone and parked down and watch the [TS]

01:07:37   containers come off the ships could put [TS]

01:07:40   on trucks and drive away or get put on [TS]

01:07:42   trains and drive away and in in in [TS]

01:07:46   following we've talked about this before [TS]

01:07:47   but you know in the process of watching [TS]

01:07:49   this happen [TS]

01:07:50   I've been like said where those trucks [TS]

01:07:53   going and I followed them and I said [TS]

01:07:55   where those trains going and followed [TS]

01:07:56   them and I see the route they take out [TS]

01:07:58   of the city and I see the places that [TS]

01:08:00   they stopped on the way and in the [TS]

01:08:03   process of that whole experience I've [TS]

01:08:06   got just a just the tiniest little [TS]

01:08:09   thread of how complicated that system of [TS]

01:08:12   moving goods is around the country and [TS]

01:08:16   around the world and how everything in [TS]

01:08:20   my in my room here at some point has [TS]

01:08:23   arrived as has been has gone into that [TS]

01:08:25   stream and come out of it and sometimes [TS]

01:08:28   gone into that stream and come out of [TS]

01:08:30   multiple times [TS]

01:08:32   and understanding that that is in some [TS]

01:08:34   ways you know like whatever you say [TS]

01:08:36   about capitalism in some ways that is a [TS]

01:08:38   that is a neutral system you know it is [TS]

01:08:41   just an organic system its it is like a [TS]

01:08:43   river [TS]

01:08:44   um I can't look at anything without [TS]

01:08:48   thinking about it and the wire has a [TS]

01:08:50   similar kind of at a certain point you [TS]

01:08:54   eat the immorality you what you the [TS]

01:08:57   morality that you brought into watching [TS]

01:08:59   that show is not the morality that you [TS]

01:09:01   take out of having watched that show [TS]

01:09:04   where what was what what is right and [TS]

01:09:07   what is wrong what is what is ultimately [TS]

01:09:09   good and what is not good you know our [TS]

01:09:12   are forever kind of flipped by your [TS]

01:09:16   experience of like oh wow i thought that [TS]

01:09:17   guy was the hero and it turns out he's [TS]

01:09:19   the villain oh well I thought that was [TS]

01:09:21   the point is that's really helped like [TS]

01:09:22   coming into it thinking it's gonna be a [TS]

01:09:24   police procedural or you know cops and [TS]

01:09:26   robbers story you know some kind and [TS]

01:09:28   that's true of every aspect of a city [TS]

01:09:30   you know what I mean like it as an [TS]

01:09:32   environmentalist you look at trucks and [TS]

01:09:35   you think trucks are polluted truck [TS]

01:09:37   drivers are are are Cowboys you know [TS]

01:09:41   that you talk to people all the time [TS]

01:09:43   they're like I hate truckers or you know [TS]

01:09:46   why can't we why can't we make [TS]

01:09:49   everything run on propane or why you [TS]

01:09:52   know it's a simple matter to just switch [TS]

01:09:54   over to solar power what you need [TS]

01:09:56   there are so many people making value [TS]

01:10:00   judgments about things and and when that [TS]

01:10:04   but they have no idea like how [TS]

01:10:05   complicated this system is how difficult [TS]

01:10:08   it is to change how entrenched it is [TS]

01:10:10   first of all but on this but secondly [TS]

01:10:13   like how massive it is how many people [TS]

01:10:16   there are how many coaster blenders [TS]

01:10:20   there are right now being trucked from [TS]

01:10:22   somewhere to somewhere else for people [TS]

01:10:24   to make smoothies and and what what all [TS]

01:10:28   goes into that I mean it it it it [TS]

01:10:31   boggles the mind you can't read the [TS]

01:10:33   newspaper without without ultimately [TS]

01:10:35   every article takes you back to that at [TS]

01:10:40   a certain point every article in the [TS]

01:10:41   newspaper takes you back to that dock [TS]

01:10:43   every article in the newspaper if you if [TS]

01:10:46   you let your imagination go take you [TS]

01:10:47   back to the guy who's working at the [TS]

01:10:50   plant where your pool goes and sits in [TS]

01:10:54   various pools until the bacteria eat the [TS]

01:10:58   poo and then they dumped it kind of [TS]

01:11:01   still little bit pool water like you [TS]

01:11:03   wouldn't drink it but it's not pool [TS]

01:11:06   water so bad that they can't just dump [TS]

01:11:08   it into the ocean it's non-potable it's [TS]

01:11:11   not potable but it's but once it goes in [TS]

01:11:13   the ocean the little ocean bacteria eat [TS]

01:11:16   the remaining poo and then it's then its [TS]

01:11:20   nature right nature is just basically [TS]

01:11:22   poo a of different colors and that guy [TS]

01:11:27   you know that that that that waste [TS]

01:11:29   treatment plant that no one wants to [TS]

01:11:31   think about the waste treatment plant [TS]

01:11:32   nobody wants to think about [TS]

01:11:35   no one wants to put themselves in a [TS]

01:11:36   little ship and follow their poo and and [TS]

01:11:42   yet you know if that system broke down [TS]

01:11:45   for one hour we would all be up to our [TS]

01:11:48   necks in poo and protesting and sweet be [TS]

01:11:51   so mad uh-huh and we'd be refusing to [TS]

01:11:54   pay our taxes and we would be like this [TS]

01:11:58   is that this is a and it's just like [TS]

01:11:59   yeah exactly it's it's it's amazing that [TS]

01:12:04   that all of our systems all of our [TS]

01:12:07   little capillaries that the blood keeps [TS]

01:12:10   flowing in them right and and you know [TS]

01:12:13   think about you want to hitch a ride to [TS]

01:12:16   Mount Kilimanjaro and respect that seems [TS]

01:12:19   based on what you're describing you [TS]

01:12:20   realize that that sounds a little silly [TS]

01:12:22   the free radical because she didn't have [TS]

01:12:25   all the information that you needed well [TS]

01:12:27   you know I like I think it's like a lot [TS]

01:12:30   of people who are middle-aged I I know [TS]

01:12:32   just enough to know what stupid and not [TS]

01:12:34   enough to know what smart but one thing [TS]

01:12:37   i know is i think i probably a little [TS]

01:12:39   bit it's not stupid little short-sighted [TS]

01:12:41   is the failure to understand that [TS]

01:12:42   everything in life is an engineering [TS]

01:12:44   problem and I I honestly this tina we [TS]

01:12:48   buy I don't know how much we see that I [TS]

01:12:50   politically but oh I'll just say that I [TS]

01:12:53   think the biggest common problem [TS]

01:12:56   and that you know an alien-type refers a [TS]

01:12:58   civics rather than politics to meet [TS]

01:13:00   politics is theater to means in civics [TS]

01:13:02   the idea that there are things you want [TS]

01:13:04   to improve and you can think about that [TS]

01:13:05   is government you can think about that [TS]

01:13:06   is getting potholes fixed you can think [TS]

01:13:08   about that is trying to get people to [TS]

01:13:09   stop letting the dog shit in the park [TS]

01:13:11   what however you want to think about [TS]

01:13:13   that but it all comes down to one basic [TS]

01:13:16   problem until you address this problem [TS]

01:13:17   it's very difficult to get anything done [TS]

01:13:19   with anything except raw power which [TS]

01:13:22   most of us don't have and that is the [TS]

01:13:24   problem that you can't change one factor [TS]

01:13:26   about anything and all to me when I look [TS]

01:13:30   at almost all and this is i blame this [TS]

01:13:32   complete meal is stupid fucking liberal [TS]

01:13:34   arts education that taught me to realize [TS]

01:13:35   how things can be wrong when not always [TS]

01:13:37   figure out how they can be right but i [TS]

01:13:39   do know is you can't change one thing [TS]

01:13:40   about anything right I'm not an engineer [TS]

01:13:42   idea but all I know is that there are [TS]

01:13:44   several factors that go into a plane [TS]

01:13:46   staying in the air you can't change one [TS]

01:13:48   of those factors and if you want to [TS]

01:13:50   change one factor about anything in your [TS]

01:13:52   life and you focus very heavily on that [TS]

01:13:54   and that could be that you're against [TS]

01:13:55   abortion [TS]

01:13:56   it could be that you're against dog poop [TS]

01:13:57   it could be your against trucks [TS]

01:13:59   it could be that your pro vegetarian [TS]

01:14:01   shoes it's not good it's not bad it's [TS]

01:14:03   just life that if you change if you've [TS]

01:14:05   fetishize one thing they should change [TS]

01:14:07   without taking into account what else [TS]

01:14:09   happens you're going to have unexpected [TS]

01:14:11   consequences there are numerous numerous [TS]

01:14:13   examples in civics and in nature of all [TS]

01:14:15   of these things happening all the time [TS]

01:14:16   and that's what I think that's what [TS]

01:14:18   drives me crazy [TS]

01:14:19   I mean how could you ever categorically [TS]

01:14:20   say everybody should carry a gun [TS]

01:14:22   how could you categorically say nobody [TS]

01:14:23   should ever have an abortion [TS]

01:14:25   how could you categorically say no one [TS]

01:14:26   should ever let the dogs in the park [TS]

01:14:27   well I hate dog shit in the park but if [TS]

01:14:30   somebody's gotta run run run home to go [TS]

01:14:31   take care of somebody is sick and the [TS]

01:14:33   doctors shit while they're running that [TS]

01:14:35   guess that's it might be an edge case [TS]

01:14:37   all I'm saying is that when that when [TS]

01:14:39   the political stuff heats up and the [TS]

01:14:40   civics melts down its frequently because [TS]

01:14:43   we can't agree on the one thing that we [TS]

01:14:44   want to change and if we do try to [TS]

01:14:47   change that one thing we don't account [TS]

01:14:48   for all the knock-on effects of [TS]

01:14:50   everything else that gets fucked up [TS]

01:14:51   because of it right now that's out and I [TS]

01:14:53   think that's absolutely true and even in [TS]

01:14:55   your interpersonal or interpersonal [TS]

01:14:57   experiences 10 times yeah you start to [TS]

01:15:00   think about like I need to change this [TS]

01:15:02   about myself I need to really look at [TS]

01:15:05   this thing about myself you know [TS]

01:15:07   you can never do that in isolation you [TS]

01:15:09   can never you can never separate out [TS]

01:15:12   right [TS]

01:15:13   the part of you that you want to change [TS]

01:15:15   make the change and then put it back in [TS]

01:15:17   if you spend eight hours a day drinking [TS]

01:15:19   and say I'm gonna quit drinking [TS]

01:15:20   you're not accounting for the fact that [TS]

01:15:21   open hours in the day now if that much [TS]

01:15:25   let's put a fine point on if you say if [TS]

01:15:27   you if you say to you say to someone in [TS]

01:15:30   your family [TS]

01:15:31   I don't see why because I wouldn't want [TS]

01:15:32   to sync sound like it's this but let's [TS]

01:15:34   say you say you don't say anything to [TS]

01:15:36   your wife never talk to your wife that's [TS]

01:15:38   the biggest engineering problem because [TS]

01:15:39   i'm a doghouse but think about this [TS]

01:15:41   think about you finally get the stones [TS]

01:15:43   to say to somebody like could you please [TS]

01:15:45   stop chewing with your mouth full [TS]

01:15:47   something that's what's been driving you [TS]

01:15:48   crazy for years you know what even if [TS]

01:15:50   they did that you might have solved the [TS]

01:15:53   problem you want to solve which is to [TS]

01:15:54   get them to stop making noise that [TS]

01:15:55   bugged you would have been easier for [TS]

01:15:57   you to not mind it but now you've [TS]

01:15:59   created a much larger problem which is [TS]

01:16:01   you sound like a dick [TS]

01:16:02   oh and you might make them self [TS]

01:16:04   conscious i'm not saying that's good bad [TS]

01:16:05   or indifferent [TS]

01:16:06   I'm just saying that's a really fucking [TS]

01:16:07   simple example if you say truck drivers [TS]

01:16:09   are bad and we don't truck get trucks [TS]

01:16:10   anymore [TS]

01:16:11   how are you gonna get your vegetarian [TS]

01:16:12   shoes delivered that's right vegetarian [TS]

01:16:14   choose come on trucks just thinking [TS]

01:16:15   about something I mean unless unless you [TS]

01:16:17   unless you've got some way to have like [TS]

01:16:19   you know a green camel that doesn't poop [TS]

01:16:21   in the park and and and votes pro you no [TS]

01:16:24   choice [TS]

01:16:25   how is that stuff going to happen the [TS]

01:16:27   system is not as simple and you know [TS]

01:16:29   what you know why i'm hot about this [TS]

01:16:31   John because this is exactly the [TS]

01:16:32   fucktard that I was for like 30 years i [TS]

01:16:34   really did think it was this simple i [TS]

01:16:36   thought it was as simple as going in [TS]

01:16:37   buying a t-shirt with the slogan on it [TS]

01:16:38   that it probably been produced with tiny [TS]

01:16:40   little Vietnamese fingers and i bought [TS]

01:16:42   it in some kind of you know I ordered it [TS]

01:16:44   online delivered to my house [TS]

01:16:46   well everybody our generation does they [TS]

01:16:48   read manufacturing consent or they read [TS]

01:16:50   howard zinn and they come out of that [TS]

01:16:53   state councilor go ahead and say come [TS]

01:16:55   out of the night going to counsel that's [TS]

01:16:57   fine i don't provoke you and they stared [TS]

01:17:02   they stand on the in the square of their [TS]

01:17:04   University and they look at the person [TS]

01:17:06   standing next to them who is [TS]

01:17:07   insufficiently enlightened and they go [TS]

01:17:10   oh my god are you really wearing those [TS]

01:17:13   leather shoes like do you know but the [TS]

01:17:17   car that cows produce more methane [TS]

01:17:20   then a thousand gas generators but not [TS]

01:17:24   as much as user and you go oh boy here [TS]

01:17:28   we go [TS]

01:17:29   you know that that kind of you know that [TS]

01:17:32   kind of like lamebrain activism [TS]

01:17:36   all i know is i cannot find a fucking [TS]

01:17:38   200 watt light bulb to save my life John [TS]

01:17:42   my vision is dim he my vision is dim and [TS]

01:17:45   I like a bright fucking room and now I'm [TS]

01:17:47   walking around with these little these [TS]

01:17:49   little fusilli light bulbs [TS]

01:17:51   oh it was just trying to make everybody [TS]

01:17:54   I don't you start on my pubs all I know [TS]

01:17:56   is everybody i know it's like they have [TS]

01:17:57   joined us don't tell me the color [TS]

01:17:59   temperature is getting better it's not [TS]

01:18:00   there still heinous [TS]

01:18:01   yeah and you know what the difference [TS]

01:18:02   you know what can tell you what the [TS]

01:18:04   difference between a 100-watt [TS]

01:18:06   incandescent light bulbs and a 200 why [TS]

01:18:08   it's not twice it's all the difference [TS]

01:18:10   in the world it's fucking lightning and [TS]

01:18:11   a lightning bug 200 watts I can see [TS]

01:18:13   everything that's happening just say can [TS]

01:18:15   I just say if RTP and had his to photo [TS]

01:18:17   taken with the proper lighting he would [TS]

01:18:19   look a lot better [TS]

01:18:20   you look a lot like a lot a lot of got [TS]

01:18:22   one big black shadow and [TS]

01:18:23   african-american shadow behind him [TS]

01:18:25   yeah i was a picture meetings on [TS]

01:18:27   wikipedia org wiki the thing picture of [TS]

01:18:30   me on there it's like I i'm in texas [TS]

01:18:35   I've been sweating for four days I [TS]

01:18:37   haven't taken a shower I looked that's [TS]

01:18:39   like of all the pictures that could be [TS]

01:18:41   of me on Weekend oh that's a handsome [TS]

01:18:43   pressure John oh you know what if you I [TS]

01:18:45   don't do a lot with Wikipedia and I [TS]

01:18:47   don't want to get these guys are up but [TS]

01:18:50   I would be I would be more than happy to [TS]

01:18:52   public domain a photo of you that i have [TS]

01:18:54   taken if you would like a different one [TS]

01:18:55   up i tried i think that'd be much better [TS]

01:18:57   i think i work through our channels on [TS]

01:18:58   wikipedia always right [TS]

01:19:01   oh oh my goodness you know first I think [TS]

01:19:03   I finally figured it out I figured out a [TS]

01:19:04   lot of people talked about this you must [TS]

01:19:07   for I think we might have even while [TS]

01:19:08   you're 43 check that out [TS]

01:19:09   yeah I know you don't know that now i [TS]

01:19:11   thought i was told you no wait a minute [TS]

01:19:13   i am older than you holy shit [TS]

01:19:15   a lot of people are there was a story [TS]

01:19:17   was going around a few weeks ago about a [TS]

01:19:20   guy who had written a book about the [TS]

01:19:22   Haymarket rights gives you this story [TS]

01:19:23   but it's it's a recount in briefs and I [TS]

01:19:27   could get some aspects of this review [TS]

01:19:28   and breathe right now I thought you were [TS]

01:19:29   a boxer you know what I'm where I'm [TS]

01:19:31   actually wearing pants and where [TS]

01:19:32   a shirt with a collar that's more than I [TS]

01:19:34   can say it felt like wearing a shirt [TS]

01:19:35   with a collar damn i can't tell you why [TS]

01:19:37   I'm i'm in a bathroom [TS]

01:19:39   long story short the Haymarket Riot is [TS]

01:19:41   that the one with the other people got [TS]

01:19:43   with that somebody threw a bomb and the [TS]

01:19:45   guys got railroaded is named are all [TS]

01:19:47   thrown haymarket punches [TS]

01:19:48   oh that haymakers anyway this guy is one [TS]

01:19:52   of the biggest authorities on certain [TS]

01:19:54   aspects of a topic let's just make this [TS]

01:19:57   a black box he is that he is more of an [TS]

01:19:59   authority on aspects of this topic than [TS]

01:20:00   pretty much anybody out there but his [TS]

01:20:03   edits were all rejected and they [TS]

01:20:04   basically told him to go away because he [TS]

01:20:06   wasn't doing at the wikipedia way so [TS]

01:20:07   even after he went away and wrote a book [TS]

01:20:09   about it it still wasn't enough and so [TS]

01:20:12   here's my take on wiki p wikipedia is [TS]

01:20:16   not an author it's a librarian and [TS]

01:20:18   that's what people don't understand a [TS]

01:20:20   librarian does not tell you what the [TS]

01:20:21   book should say it says that this is [TS]

01:20:22   what the book says oh I'm just saying [TS]

01:20:26   now why is there why is there and there [TS]

01:20:28   seems to be like maybe an aqua likes [TS]

01:20:30   that somebody through panties that [TS]

01:20:31   shoots out a bathrobe what's a stream of [TS]

01:20:34   some kind i am i'm very you know I I [TS]

01:20:37   can't complain about my fancy behavior [TS]

01:20:40   because it's because it's a bit because [TS]

01:20:41   it's de clase or it's a bit bad come [TS]

01:20:43   should play about but you know other [TS]

01:20:45   people's other people of my peers [TS]

01:20:48   songwriters their wikipedia pages have a [TS]

01:20:50   table of contents and talks about all [TS]

01:20:52   this stuff combined just feels like a [TS]

01:20:55   kind of paragraph that someone wrote [TS]

01:20:57   makes me sad sometimes check out mine i [TS]

01:21:00   got my friend grant grant took a really [TS]

01:21:02   good picture for mine who don't press me [TS]

01:21:05   about the computer that's good not good [TS]

01:21:07   for you [TS]

01:21:08   well freaks me out is when I find like [TS]

01:21:09   somebody's like one of my favorite [TS]

01:21:10   people in the world and like their [TS]

01:21:12   wikipedia article is shorter than mine [TS]

01:21:13   that completely freaks me out [TS]

01:21:15   you know that happens yeah grandma's [TS]

01:21:17   real name is grantsburg burning heart [TS]

01:21:19   what a great name grantsburg I out that [TS]

01:21:21   sounds made-up grantsburg what a great [TS]

01:21:23   name [TS]

01:21:23   how did you get you just on the internet [TS]

01:21:24   and all of a sudden you're like our [TS]

01:21:26   grant hart I've got to go look at the [TS]

01:21:27   Minutemen let's check out the Minuteman [TS]

01:21:30   know you know it's just kind of a [TS]

01:21:33   framework for a morning [TS]

01:21:35   anything it's making fake smart and [TS]

01:21:38   national dog and I just look at all [TS]

01:21:41   ok wow I can't get in there huh don't [TS]

01:21:44   think it really thats bedroom just [TS]

01:21:46   happened in our recording I really feel [TS]

01:21:51   like I hope that you keep oh what [TS]

01:21:56   happened what was I think I can fix it [TS]

01:21:58   well you just came back you were you [TS]

01:22:00   were down yeah I think I think I think I [TS]

01:22:03   slipped into another dimension there [TS]

01:22:05   it's probably cuz i was we're talking [TS]

01:22:06   about the Minutemen i thought was really [TS]

01:22:07   about the Minutemen you got ferret you [TS]

01:22:09   you actually like what media bwi beat up [TS]

01:22:12   for a second really like lucky [TS]

01:22:15   yeah you like to feel exactly from from [TS]

01:22:17   buck rogers in the 21st century and that [TS]

01:22:19   Erin gray when she wear that little [TS]

01:22:21   shiny suit don't talk about Erin gray [TS]

01:22:23   really got a problem there and gray [TS]

01:22:24   oh I love and great great derail my [TS]

01:22:27   whole train of thought [TS]

01:22:29   yeah and grandchildren whatever happened [TS]

01:22:31   to see if he's on wikipedia everybody is [TS]

01:22:35   like Tom Selleck he's out there trying [TS]

01:22:37   to get work but i'm still it's very [TS]

01:22:38   conservative is any use of conservative [TS]

01:22:40   guy but I find I hope she killed her [TS]

01:22:43   arde i'm going i did a little bit of a [TS]

01:22:45   research on Tom Selleck the other day [TS]

01:22:46   and I and I believe that [TS]

01:22:48   oh this is what I am I had to had to [TS]

01:22:50   walk away from you for a while you have [TS]

01:22:52   it off you had a little thing going [TS]

01:22:53   about Matthew McConaughey for a while [TS]

01:22:55   too didn't you go ahead can't can't [TS]

01:22:57   abide it can't abide McConaughey but [TS]

01:22:59   because it's something like nail for a [TS]

01:23:01   minute tom so and a bad McConaughey I [TS]

01:23:05   feel like he although I disagree with [TS]

01:23:08   his politics i believe that he is just [TS]

01:23:11   one of those guys he's like if you were [TS]

01:23:12   dating his daughter he would be your [TS]

01:23:15   daughter's dad or even your wife's dad [TS]

01:23:17   that you were like yeah we don't agree [TS]

01:23:19   on politics but i really love with his [TS]

01:23:20   politics is just a Republican what name [TS]

01:23:23   economy I thought he played bongos in [TS]

01:23:25   his underwear was talking about i was [TS]

01:23:27   talking about Tom selleck-fronted [TS]

01:23:29   products Arctic's you could tell what [TS]

01:23:31   they are they're just fucking stoner [TS]

01:23:33   politics nothing thought he was a stoner [TS]

01:23:36   stoner policy whatwhat's that can be a [TS]

01:23:38   plank in the platform stoner politics [TS]

01:23:40   Oh to legalize it don't criticize [TS]

01:23:42   criticize it [TS]

01:23:44   yeah stoner politics are basically are [TS]

01:23:47   basically like dude why are you wearing [TS]

01:23:48   weather [TS]

01:23:49   she's don't you know the cows produce [TS]

01:23:50   method all are you being a little [TS]

01:23:52   reductive and their own a pair of non [TS]

01:23:55   leather shoes if there's one thing that [TS]

01:23:57   I think you can you can safely be [TS]

01:23:59   reductive yes there's that stoners are [TS]

01:24:00   fucking idiots [TS]

01:24:02   yeah speaking as someone who was a [TS]

01:24:05   starter for many years I don't like [TS]

01:24:07   stoners I just fucking hate hippies now [TS]

01:24:09   you know what I'm trying to say the word [TS]

01:24:11   hate I really hate hippies [TS]

01:24:13   I know you hate hippies I really hate [TS]

01:24:14   hippies hippies hippies get under my [TS]

01:24:16   skin the way that almost everything gets [TS]

01:24:17   under your skin [TS]

01:24:18   hippies are everything that's wrong with [TS]

01:24:20   everything yeah hippies are bad [TS]

01:24:23   mmm stoners as a subset of hippies [TS]

01:24:26   stories are harmless you did there like [TS]

01:24:28   zombies you can swim away with one good [TS]

01:24:29   hit to the head [TS]

01:24:30   I don't think that they are harmless [TS]

01:24:31   there are stoners you know still it's [TS]

01:24:33   like they're stoners it all around you [TS]

01:24:36   you don't realize i was just John John [TS]

01:24:40   you know I I don't have a strong [TS]

01:24:42   position on some of these things as you [TS]

01:24:43   do in my perception but like there's [TS]

01:24:46   just too many people smoking pot these [TS]

01:24:47   days it's gotta stop [TS]

01:24:49   yeah it's got it's gotta stop you gotta [TS]

01:24:50   get into something else that's just your [TS]

01:24:52   your awesome opportunity if you're [TS]

01:24:53   listening to show you still smoking pot [TS]

01:24:54   shame on you enough yeah stop smoking [TS]

01:24:57   pot for God's sake oh my god take a [TS]

01:24:59   walker make some macaroni there's gotta [TS]

01:25:00   be something else you can do this for [TS]

01:25:02   every day really you got to do that [TS]

01:25:04   everyday first 400 times you smoke pot [TS]

01:25:06   yeah you're like wow it takes me my [TS]

01:25:09   sophomore year of college [TS]

01:25:11   did you see that cat did you see that [TS]

01:25:13   glad that cat looks like Jerry Lewis man [TS]

01:25:16   like the first four hundred times you [TS]

01:25:18   smoke pot it's amazing because you did [TS]

01:25:21   you see that cat nice did you see that [TS]

01:25:23   orange oh my god did you see that orange [TS]

01:25:26   that was totally an orange or 400 times [TS]

01:25:29   you can get away with did you see that [TS]

01:25:31   orange oh my god did you see that guy [TS]

01:25:33   but for before i know this i see green [TS]

01:25:37   and you see green but how do I know that [TS]

01:25:38   we're seeing the same green exactly 400 [TS]

01:25:41   first time it's over and every [TS]

01:25:44   subsequent time after that it's over [TS]

01:25:47   they call me they call diminishing [TS]

01:25:48   returns it is exactly you're not you're [TS]

01:25:50   not you're not gonna you're not [TS]

01:25:52   I don't know there are some people like [TS]

01:25:53   I tell you I there are some people with [TS]

01:25:55   that pot is the only thing that's [TS]

01:25:56   keeping them from [TS]

01:25:58   really fucking weird but i think a lot [TS]

01:25:59   of people just a fucking weird because [TS]

01:26:01   of the pot and they kind of like it [TS]

01:26:03   yeah I mean I up admittedly there are [TS]

01:26:06   people that are using pot as a medicinal [TS]

01:26:08   substance and i'm not talking about [TS]

01:26:10   people with fake glaucoma [TS]

01:26:12   yeah i'm talking about people that take [TS]

01:26:13   a little hit of pot every day as an [TS]

01:26:15   anxiety reliever whatever [TS]

01:26:17   okay fine i'm not gonna get all up in [TS]

01:26:19   your boca about it but stoners no bad [TS]

01:26:24   that stop being stoners always did like [TS]

01:26:29   swingers or something it's like it's [TS]

01:26:31   always there [TS]

01:26:32   it's always there even if they're not [TS]

01:26:33   swinging the swinging thing is always [TS]

01:26:35   kind of their maybe that's my hangout [TS]

01:26:37   which is fine but it's a hang-up I wish [TS]

01:26:38   everybody had and with the stoners it's [TS]

01:26:40   just a matter of fucking time before [TS]

01:26:42   somebody takes out the one hitter and [TS]

01:26:44   then and then you know what i mean is [TS]

01:26:46   the inertia then everybody's got to get [TS]

01:26:47   high and they sit very still right [TS]

01:26:50   party over and even already silly [TS]

01:26:51   anything about 1999 and here's the [TS]

01:26:54   problem now you get in your fifties and [TS]

01:26:55   you're doing that shit everyday and [TS]

01:26:56   fleece you know it'sit's not making you [TS]

01:26:59   interesting i shouldn't say this John I [TS]

01:27:01   don't like to judge but really so many [TS]

01:27:02   people need to be charged [TS]

01:27:03   this is the finger all you have to do is [TS]

01:27:05   go to Holland and she's literally beg [TS]

01:27:08   you do not get me started on the Dutch [TS]

01:27:09   you walk around in holland and you talk [TS]

01:27:12   to people and you realize nobody know [TS]

01:27:14   normal people in Holland smoke pot right [TS]

01:27:17   now really is a true [TS]

01:27:19   yeah yeah their attitude about it is [TS]

01:27:21   like alright party that was like being a [TS]

01:27:23   dick in France I thought it's just what [TS]

01:27:24   you did [TS]

01:27:24   oh no not not not at all to its tourists [TS]

01:27:27   tourists and what I mean the Dutch are [TS]

01:27:31   very there are they're very quick to say [TS]

01:27:34   like losers right i mean it [TS]

01:27:36   pots legal so the so the mystery is gone [TS]

01:27:39   and so II all they have to do is just [TS]

01:27:43   see what what happens when you smoke [TS]

01:27:45   marijuana which is that it makes you a [TS]

01:27:47   dope and so 99% of the normal like your [TS]

01:27:53   average dutch person has no there's no [TS]

01:27:56   mystery about smoking pot and they don't [TS]

01:27:58   do it [TS]

01:27:59   they're just like yeah that's just for [TS]

01:28:00   the that's for the tourist district and [TS]

01:28:02   that's for like assholes thinking [TS]

01:28:05   everybody here it says sourdough bread [TS]

01:28:07   and rice surrounding oh in San Francisco [TS]

01:28:09   throwing things [TS]

01:28:10   how often you don't watch him throw fish [TS]

01:28:12   you know you you're going through and [TS]

01:28:14   you've got somewhere to go and they're [TS]

01:28:16   throwing fish and it's actually it helps [TS]

01:28:18   because the fish throwing collects it [TS]

01:28:22   collects the detritus people around the [TS]

01:28:25   fish throwing and you can get started [TS]

01:28:26   down the stairs and through the market [TS]

01:28:29   was an attractive nuisance but a good [TS]

01:28:31   kind [TS]

01:28:31   yeah yeah I i support the first throwing [TS]

01:28:33   its it because you know it localizes if [TS]

01:28:37   you're going to throw if you're gonna [TS]

01:28:38   throw a hand grenade somewhere who [TS]

01:28:40   that's where you that's where you would [TS]

01:28:42   do it but it is a hand grenade throwing [TS]

01:28:44   demonstration are you talking about a [TS]

01:28:46   rocky the right think I've been thinking [TS]

01:28:48   about actually having a little booths [TS]

01:28:49   down there the market and demonstrating [TS]

01:28:50   hand grenade some you know my [TS]

01:28:52   grandfather was a hand grenade is i'm [TS]

01:28:55   going to write this down and do not want [TS]

01:28:56   to lose track i don't know if we have [TS]

01:28:57   time today I would love to discuss some [TS]

01:28:59   concepts for you having a booth by the [TS]

01:29:00   fish throwing place but the truth of the [TS]

01:29:02   market yeah my grandfather was a hand [TS]

01:29:04   growth and hand grenade throwing [TS]

01:29:07   instructor in world war one way that [TS]

01:29:10   people out of three potato masher so [TS]

01:29:12   that was the Germans had the potato [TS]

01:29:13   measurement of doing what we have we had [TS]

01:29:15   animals style and pineapples pineapple [TS]

01:29:17   hundred is that right yeah he was a hand [TS]

01:29:20   grenade instructor [TS]

01:29:22   are you kidding me many went in and then [TS]

01:29:25   he went and bought in the fund the war [TS]

01:29:26   where did you go to France you want to [TS]

01:29:28   frame you got all the words BTW ID have [TS]

01:29:31   always parts after their training he had [TS]

01:29:33   all of his parts except for his mind [TS]

01:29:37   apart [TS]

01:29:41   yes yeah I'm so sorry [TS]

01:29:45   no I don't mean to laugh was a PTSD or [TS]

01:29:47   because he was fucking crazy from hand [TS]

01:29:49   grenades [TS]

01:29:50   yeah it was you know at the time they [TS]

01:29:52   called it shell shock [TS]

01:29:54   oh you're talking after he came back [TS]

01:29:55   from France when he came back from [TS]

01:29:57   friends on sorry I shouldn't have [TS]

01:29:58   laughed [TS]

01:29:59   no no it's all right i never met him [TS]

01:30:00   because he died and i think it's fucking [TS]

01:30:02   though but he he had a hard time he did [TS]

01:30:05   not really integrate into the world very [TS]

01:30:07   well that was not a time when anybody [TS]

01:30:10   had a lot of sympathy for that and his [TS]

01:30:13   therapy get behind the plow and start [TS]

01:30:15   pushing your plow so what he did was he [TS]

01:30:17   went to Los Angeles and he lived in one [TS]

01:30:19   of those Bukowski hotels in downtown LA [TS]

01:30:23   what's the name is Wilson kill i'm [TS]

01:30:29   getting well so i can but yeah he drank [TS]

01:30:32   himself to death in a in a flophouse [TS]

01:30:34   hotel in LA this is this is the problem [TS]

01:30:36   with innovation and evolution technology [TS]

01:30:38   John there's a time when you need a hand [TS]

01:30:40   growing a hand grenade throwing expert [TS]

01:30:42   and there's the time we don't need it as [TS]

01:30:43   much [TS]

01:30:43   yeah that's right you come back to come [TS]

01:30:45   back to america and you're like I can do [TS]

01:30:47   this may go [TS]

01:30:48   mhm don't need those now my dad's best [TS]

01:30:51   friend back in Ohio was hunting buddies [TS]

01:30:55   I was a was big in the police department [TS]

01:30:58   and this is not funny but he died he was [TS]

01:31:01   he was a fat copyright or you know he [TS]

01:31:03   was an awesome copy was super he was [TS]

01:31:04   super cool guy he was a street standard [TS]

01:31:06   i/o couple well hiya shop I mean I think [TS]

01:31:09   he's probably at that you know at the at [TS]

01:31:11   the captain lieutenant colonel come not [TS]

01:31:12   you know what I mean I don't know what [TS]

01:31:13   ever it was probably you know his fire [TS]

01:31:15   anyway he want his job is to teach [TS]

01:31:17   people how to be safe [TS]

01:31:19   one of his jobs to do instruction on how [TS]

01:31:20   to be safe was stuffed with super deadly [TS]

01:31:22   and at dynamite cap blew up in his [TS]

01:31:25   fucking hand oh wow yeah and it blew off [TS]

01:31:28   his fingers [TS]

01:31:29   yeah well that's ended up with that one [TS]

01:31:31   of the Shaka brah [TS]

01:31:32   hang li steals you know when I was and [TS]

01:31:35   that he had a thumb and pinky and in a [TS]

01:31:37   minute shaka-brah that's the that's [TS]

01:31:39   pretty good double horns [TS]

01:31:41   no not even that not even right no yeah [TS]

01:31:43   more like Hawaii hang loose [TS]

01:31:45   yeah yeah that's cool you down horns to [TS]

01:31:48   be fucking awesome when I was a kid in [TS]

01:31:50   Alaska there were blasting caps were a [TS]

01:31:55   were kind of a problem because they were [TS]

01:31:58   blasting caps lying around [TS]

01:31:59   apparently and from parades are like I [TS]

01:32:04   don't know people were I mean there was [TS]

01:32:05   a lot of there was a lot of dynamite and [TS]

01:32:07   allows I like clear for us and stuff [TS]

01:32:09   yeah people were mining gold and they [TS]

01:32:11   were building track for the railroad and [TS]

01:32:13   I mean I that the friend of my dad's had [TS]

01:32:16   a big had one of those big metal lockers [TS]

01:32:19   in his backyard it was just full of [TS]

01:32:20   dynamite and I'll are you shitting me [TS]

01:32:23   just sit around and I mean we had a [TS]

01:32:25   padlock on it but I was I was a total [TS]

01:32:29   pyromaniac as a kid I guess I'll see [TS]

01:32:31   that [TS]

01:32:32   the railroad had the road head because [TS]

01:32:34   my dad worked at the railroad the road [TS]

01:32:36   had all this kind of explore these [TS]

01:32:38   different kind of explosive warehouses [TS]

01:32:40   where they were you know blasting rock [TS]

01:32:43   and stuff and they were and they were [TS]

01:32:44   blasting rock on the highway the whole [TS]

01:32:46   time I was growing up anyway so there [TS]

01:32:48   were posters all over of all color [TS]

01:32:52   posters i wish i had one now of all the [TS]

01:32:55   different kinds of blasting caps [TS]

01:32:57   beautiful on the wiki page right now I'm [TS]

01:32:59   never level these posters that said like [TS]

01:33:01   don't play with these these are not [TS]

01:33:04   don't if you see one of these don't play [TS]

01:33:06   with it all right like that'll help [TS]

01:33:08   I know I had this account to post with [TS]

01:33:09   boobs on and saying don't think about [TS]

01:33:11   this [TS]

01:33:11   don't think about it no seriously here's [TS]

01:33:13   some more i had this blasting cap poster [TS]

01:33:15   on my wall and that's all I thought [TS]

01:33:17   about it I just I would walk down the [TS]

01:33:20   street with my hands clasped behind my [TS]

01:33:21   back [TS]

01:33:22   eyes down on the ground just looking for [TS]

01:33:25   blasting now I wanted to find black [TS]

01:33:28   pants and I did find these things the [TS]

01:33:31   railroad had things called torpedoes [TS]

01:33:33   which were which were little spittle [TS]

01:33:37   sacks of gunpowder and gravel that you [TS]

01:33:41   would that you would clamp to the [TS]

01:33:44   railroad track and when the train ran [TS]

01:33:47   over it would explode not loud enough to [TS]

01:33:50   hurt the train or the track but just [TS]

01:33:52   loud enough to signal the engineer but [TS]

01:33:56   there was something up ahead on the [TS]

01:33:57   track so if you hadn't had to get there [TS]

01:34:00   well if you worked at the railroad oh so [TS]

01:34:03   your equivalent of a signal is the [TS]

01:34:04   signal right throw drove on one of those [TS]

01:34:06   trucks that could get up on the track [TS]

01:34:08   uh-huh and you would say oh there's a [TS]

01:34:10   bridge out or oh there's something you [TS]

01:34:12   know there's a there's something bad up [TS]

01:34:13   ahead so let's go two miles up the road [TS]

01:34:16   here it was before radios i guess i [TS]

01:34:18   don't know why that they didn't just [TS]

01:34:19   call him on the radio but go two miles [TS]

01:34:21   up the track you put one of these [TS]

01:34:22   torpedoes on the track and then the [TS]

01:34:25   train runs over and bam and the engineer [TS]

01:34:28   knows to stop the train [TS]

01:34:29   I don't think I'd like that at all i [TS]

01:34:31   just even knowing that could happen i [TS]

01:34:33   don't like that at all [TS]

01:34:35   well so I I so i did manage to scrounge [TS]

01:34:37   a couple of these torpedo shit as i was [TS]

01:34:39   in you know in some some warehouse [TS]

01:34:42   shared with my dad and a bunch of men [TS]

01:34:44   and hardhat [TS]

01:34:45   it's and they all turned around to look [TS]

01:34:46   at a valve or something I was like a hot [TS]

01:34:49   40 doesn't look grab stuff the pocket of [TS]

01:34:52   my jacket with them but the problem with [TS]

01:34:53   them is that it may require the weight [TS]

01:34:57   of a locomotive to set them off like you [TS]

01:35:01   can't hit that with the hammer and get [TS]

01:35:03   them to explode [TS]

01:35:04   I mean it means I'm sorry when we talk [TS]

01:35:06   about a firecracker an m-80 like how [TS]

01:35:07   much pop oh it's bigger than or maybe [TS]

01:35:10   you're kidding and you're you're trying [TS]

01:35:11   to make that pop oh no I wasn't hitting [TS]

01:35:14   drama safe on it I was an idiot but i [TS]

01:35:17   don't know i don't like thrown into a [TS]

01:35:19   campfire and run hide your kidding but [TS]

01:35:22   that's insane [TS]

01:35:24   yeah oh my god the things I used to do [TS]

01:35:26   one of my favorite things I my parents [TS]

01:35:30   know I think I figured out that i did [TS]

01:35:33   this and it was a source of much fear [TS]

01:35:36   but you know what i was home alone in [TS]

01:35:38   the house I would open up the flu and [TS]

01:35:40   the fire in the fireplace and I would [TS]

01:35:44   sit with cans of spray paint and wd40 [TS]

01:35:47   pilot light you know it light a lighter [TS]

01:35:50   and spray the wd-40 into the fireplace [TS]

01:35:53   you're making this incredible [TS]

01:35:56   flamethrower wd-40 is an amazing flames [TS]

01:35:58   are who and I would watch the flame come [TS]

01:36:01   up the stream of wd-40 and right as it [TS]

01:36:03   got to the nozzle I would stop you know [TS]

01:36:05   i would let let go the flame would [TS]

01:36:08   oh are you kidding me and I would sit [TS]

01:36:10   for hours at a time and just just [TS]

01:36:12   flamethrower into the into the fireplace [TS]

01:36:16   and watching the flame come up right to [TS]

01:36:18   the nozzle and the night stop this came [TS]

01:36:20   out of places i just loved it the fire [TS]

01:36:23   of the fire [TS]

01:36:28   uh-huh right I think that's good [TS]

01:36:33   [Music] [TS]
