00:00:18   [Music] [TS]

00:00:23   hello hi John hi I'm Merlin how's it [TS]

00:00:28   going up [TS]

00:00:30   well I I'm trying something new semester [TS]

00:00:35   with one hand what are you doing at some [TS]

00:00:37   point Jim here just I said to John on [TS]

00:00:42   the robot are are you ready to record [TS]

00:00:44   and he said Jim here I had some so i was [TS]

00:00:50   i was cleaning out an old guitar case [TS]

00:00:52   yesterday and i found my old rat pedal [TS]

00:00:56   which had been missing and then I found [TS]

00:00:59   this bag of starbucks basically like [TS]

00:01:05   little nescafe tubes [TS]

00:01:07   did you ever experience nescafe yeah you [TS]

00:01:12   know I'm just trying to put it all [TS]

00:01:14   together is this is sort of like the [TS]

00:01:15   things you can like European sugar [TS]

00:01:17   holders is that kind of shaped like a [TS]

00:01:18   tube like that [TS]

00:01:19   yeah it's a little paper tube it in [TS]

00:01:22   Europe you'll often be in situations [TS]

00:01:25   where the only coffee that you have [TS]

00:01:27   available is nescafe which is just [TS]

00:01:29   instant like poor poor the little [TS]

00:01:32   grounds for some grounds and pour some [TS]

00:01:34   hot water over and your coffee appears [TS]

00:01:36   and when i first discovered them I [TS]

00:01:40   thought they were revelation i didn't [TS]

00:01:42   realize of course that it's just sank or [TS]

00:01:44   or you know it's just flavor crystals or [TS]

00:01:46   whatever America has had instant coffee [TS]

00:01:48   for years decided but growing up I [TS]

00:01:52   didn't have coffee until I moved to [TS]

00:01:54   Seattle and so I never experienced [TS]

00:01:57   coffee that comes in cans mean that's [TS]

00:02:01   the coffee that the adults drink when I [TS]

00:02:03   was growing up but I never had it it was [TS]

00:02:06   only it was only espresso like that was [TS]

00:02:09   my introduction so when I first we say [TS]

00:02:11   it again you mean the same way that we [TS]

00:02:13   would have liked the internet Nestle's [TS]

00:02:15   Quik like you take a spoon you put into [TS]

00:02:17   the canister and done some hot water on [TS]

00:02:19   top of it [TS]

00:02:20   yeah right like I mean I don't even know [TS]

00:02:21   what soldiers is I don't know is is the [TS]

00:02:25   would you put folders into a modern [TS]

00:02:27   coffee maker [TS]

00:02:28   you would wouldn't you it's just my [TS]

00:02:30   ground coffee I'm you know I don't know [TS]

00:02:34   what it's been a really [TS]

00:02:36   long time and for some reason like my [TS]

00:02:38   got 25 cars on this one is the next can [TS]

00:02:40   I remember the nescafe commercials and I [TS]

00:02:42   remember the day we show the commercials [TS]

00:02:44   they had a cool like little little mugs [TS]

00:02:46   look at globe with a handle on it i just [TS]

00:02:49   like to say to listeners I would kill [TS]

00:02:51   for one of those today and the other one [TS]

00:02:53   was when I had one of my first freelance [TS]

00:02:55   jobs and it was just discovering coffee [TS]

00:02:57   i would work late at night at this real [TS]

00:03:00   estate office and I would put it [TS]

00:03:02   basically would make hot chocolate and [TS]

00:03:04   then dumped coffee instant coffee into [TS]

00:03:07   it i right right right and I didn't know [TS]

00:03:09   any better [TS]

00:03:10   well so i'm also my chakra tea that you [TS]

00:03:12   know it was a covered up the nastiness [TS]

00:03:15   of the caffeine in coffee tastes Right [TS]

00:03:18   giant buzz the first couple of times [TS]

00:03:21   that I did european rock touring where I [TS]

00:03:24   was where I would show up at a venue and [TS]

00:03:28   there would be like one there be a box [TS]

00:03:30   that had the equivalent of 50 cups of [TS]

00:03:32   coffee in it but it was all in little [TS]

00:03:34   little tubes little paper tubes [TS]

00:03:37   wow I was like this is genius and i [TS]

00:03:39   would grab the whole box and stuff it in [TS]

00:03:41   my bag i'll be like I have coffee now [TS]

00:03:43   forever [TS]

00:03:44   no one can ever tell me there's no [TS]

00:03:46   coffee with the very least you never [TS]

00:03:47   have to worry that there won't be coffee [TS]

00:03:48   right i'm in his coffee now I'm going to [TS]

00:03:50   carry one of these in my wallet at all [TS]

00:03:52   times it's like that it's like 2-4 [TS]

00:03:55   coffee you know it's a good kind of [TS]

00:03:57   coffee caffeine condom and and so anyway [TS]

00:04:02   so I'm emptying out this guitar case and [TS]

00:04:05   I find this bag of starbucks branded [TS]

00:04:10   paper tube nescafe grounds and only [TS]

00:04:15   guided by voices song by general haha [TS]

00:04:18   and I'm like I don't remember I don't [TS]

00:04:24   remember seeing these before I don't [TS]

00:04:26   remember secret secret of these in my [TS]

00:04:28   guitar bag but i absolutely this is at [TS]

00:04:32   finding these is absolutely consistent [TS]

00:04:33   with the the kind of hoarder coffee [TS]

00:04:38   order mentality have exhibited before [TS]

00:04:40   which is in any situation where I'm in a [TS]

00:04:43   backstage environment or a [TS]

00:04:47   like a a gift bag situation where a lot [TS]

00:04:53   of gift bags now that you get it events [TS]

00:04:55   will have a pound of coffee in them [TS]

00:04:58   really in the northwest at least like if [TS]

00:05:01   you go to if you go to a conference in [TS]

00:05:02   portland and you're one of the speaker's [TS]

00:05:04   they'll give you a gift bag and it [TS]

00:05:05   always has a pound of stumptown coffee [TS]

00:05:07   all you get in fegan infinity scarf as [TS]

00:05:10   sleater-kinney CD and as such a coffee [TS]

00:05:13   yeah exactly and so I i definitely will [TS]

00:05:17   wait around in situations like that for [TS]

00:05:20   to see like the three or four gift bags [TS]

00:05:24   that don't get claimed sure and then i [TS]

00:05:26   will go NAB the coffee out of here is [TS]

00:05:29   the vernacular of the poor kid at [TS]

00:05:30   lunchtime in the elementary school i'll [TS]

00:05:32   have it i'll have it that's right now I [TS]

00:05:34   like I use a hamburger of it i used to [TS]

00:05:36   do that in elementary school I can [TS]

00:05:37   totally see beyond the i'll have a guy [TS]

00:05:39   could be like getting that bun that bun [TS]

00:05:42   and anything to eat the pickles it's [TS]

00:05:46   completely consistent with me that I [TS]

00:05:48   would have been in a situation where [TS]

00:05:49   they would have where I would have seen [TS]

00:05:50   this bag of coffee envelopes and I would [TS]

00:05:55   have looked for you know taking a look [TS]

00:05:57   to the left take a look to the right [TS]

00:05:58   realize that like this is my backstage [TS]

00:06:00   these coffee envelopes are here for me [TS]

00:06:02   and then I would have stuffed them in my [TS]

00:06:05   guitar case without even knowing without [TS]

00:06:07   even remembering having done it like I [TS]

00:06:10   ever had one so anyway you like it like [TS]

00:06:12   a squirrel like a squirrel write a [TS]

00:06:14   letter Raven I've got my little bottles [TS]

00:06:16   but they're all coffee [TS]

00:06:18   uh-huh anyway so I found this in this [TS]

00:06:21   guitar case and I and I SAT there and [TS]

00:06:23   i'm looking at the guitar and I'm like [TS]

00:06:25   when did I play this thing last live [TS]

00:06:28   it's a weird guitar I would it would [TS]

00:06:33   ideally would be like a primary tour [TS]

00:06:36   guitar [TS]

00:06:37   no this isn't a guitar that like I [TS]

00:06:38   grabbed without thinking is a local gig [TS]

00:06:41   or or I could have traveled with it but [TS]

00:06:46   to an event where my expectation was [TS]

00:06:48   that I was going to do something like [TS]

00:06:51   fun and dumb rather than that i was [TS]

00:06:55   going to seriously like use this guitar [TS]

00:06:57   to play some tunes like 10 screws [TS]

00:07:00   yeah but I I didn't bring it on the [TS]

00:07:02   cruise it it was a so anyway that's the [TS]

00:07:05   that's problem number two I can't [TS]

00:07:06   remember where I was there it was so [TS]

00:07:08   long ago that I that I that I can i have [TS]

00:07:12   it please [TS]

00:07:14   he's starbucks to suck at starbuck tubes [TS]

00:07:17   and then updates on [TS]

00:07:19   no I don't think so they're not they're [TS]

00:07:21   not sitting here right in front of me [TS]

00:07:22   but I but they've been sitting in a [TS]

00:07:24   guitar case for at least a year that any [TS]

00:07:26   day they got to be amazing so anyway I [TS]

00:07:28   took him downstairs and I just made one [TS]

00:07:31   and here's how i did it i took it I took [TS]

00:07:34   a starbucks to bend and I had to really [TS]

00:07:36   resist the impulse to use two of them [TS]

00:07:38   but i just took one the the recommended [TS]

00:07:42   serving size [TS]

00:07:43   I poured it into a beer stein filled it [TS]

00:07:46   with tap water and stuck it in the [TS]

00:07:47   microwave for two minutes and now this [TS]

00:07:50   brew is sitting in front of me here i [TS]

00:07:53   have yet to taste okay i'm standing by [TS]

00:07:55   i'm i'm on tenterhooks I can't wait to [TS]

00:07:57   hear the third so it's kind of it's [TS]

00:07:58   strangely granular John is addressing [TS]

00:08:00   this time we go it's like a weird cuts [TS]

00:08:03   very muddy here we go [TS]

00:08:05   it's nice and one that does have a kind [TS]

00:08:08   of chocolatey smell it smells like [TS]

00:09:49   so the verdict is a thumbs down [TS]

00:09:52   oh it's terrible what is the flavor I'm [TS]

00:09:54   okay first of all you really taste the [TS]

00:09:59   tap water [TS]

00:10:00   oh and then there's a there's almost [TS]

00:10:05   like a burnt meat that you like it feels [TS]

00:10:10   like it's just like the crusty and of a [TS]

00:10:14   prime rib [TS]

00:10:15   I guess that would go on under other on [TS]

00:10:17   the tasting colored it's like me when [TS]

00:10:20   i'm albert [TS]

00:10:21   it's like burnt meat that's one of the [TS]

00:10:23   flavors but also there's the chocolate [TS]

00:10:25   smell and then tap water a mouth feel [TS]

00:10:27   and then burnt meat [TS]

00:10:30   yeah really can't get away from like [TS]

00:10:33   them the the burning meat is coffee [TS]

00:10:38   though it couldn't be the stein right is [TS]

00:10:40   this time clean no no my styles are all [TS]

00:10:43   are all perfectly prepared for coffee [TS]

00:10:46   preparation showroom shine [TS]

00:10:47   yeah he's here Wow and then yeah then [TS]

00:10:54   there's something there's something [TS]

00:10:55   dirty about the finish like it's kind of [TS]

00:11:00   like Mercedes exhaust m-might wake up [TS]

00:11:02   like a bus station seat [TS]

00:11:04   yeah like a little bit of a diesel [TS]

00:11:05   components hmm [TS]

00:11:08   wow are you would have to be really and [TS]

00:11:10   it's our to you have to be really really [TS]

00:11:12   really in need of some coffee but it's [TS]

00:11:15   often em you okay well do things first [TS]

00:11:19   of all like how does it compare to his [TS]

00:11:21   first thing is that when soon as you [TS]

00:11:23   mentioned this I [TS]

00:11:24   really really really want a coffee and [TS]

00:11:26   there's no way i can make a coffee right [TS]

00:11:27   now without making a ton of noise so I'm [TS]

00:11:29   not doing that but then after you didn't [TS]

00:11:31   enjoy it you said it tasted like a [TS]

00:11:32   German car [TS]

00:11:33   I'm not isn't have a coffee now isn't [TS]

00:11:35   that funny thing turns out power of [TS]

00:11:37   suggestion turns out the other thing is [TS]

00:11:39   that how does that on the continuum of [TS]

00:11:41   bad coffee how does it stand alongside [TS]

00:11:43   things like gas station outside of town [TS]

00:11:49   last third of the pot coffee has a stand [TS]

00:11:52   next to like days in like in your motel [TS]

00:11:55   room coffee mmm conference conference [TS]

00:11:58   conference at a hotel coffee so the so [TS]

00:12:04   it seems to me that coffee that has been [TS]

00:12:05   sitting all day and brewing all day and [TS]

00:12:08   gets that kind of burned taste the [TS]

00:12:11   burned-over brood taste is throughout [TS]

00:12:15   the coffee experience right it becomes a [TS]

00:12:18   thicker like more a it fit it feels that [TS]

00:12:27   the coffee itself feels like the taste [TS]

00:12:29   is opaque it is it is throughout whereas [TS]

00:12:32   this the burned coffee flavor is a taste [TS]

00:12:36   that is floating on the top of a kind of [TS]

00:12:39   watery base [TS]

00:12:41   oh so that it's not it doesn't have the [TS]

00:12:44   full like sour you get the full majesty [TS]

00:12:48   of the canyon tank that you would at the [TS]

00:12:50   bottom of the tank that's right the [TS]

00:12:52   Kenyan tank leave the the the proximity [TS]

00:12:54   to a restroom that's being used by [TS]

00:12:57   truckers the the hot cases on the other [TS]

00:13:00   side with some JoJo's in it like all of [TS]

00:13:03   that you've you taste in the truck stop [TS]

00:13:05   mhm now a days in like in your room [TS]

00:13:10   coffee does that was disgusting little [TS]

00:13:12   coffee makers and lots of other people [TS]

00:13:14   have used oh yeah those not a horrible [TS]

00:13:15   thought that has a battery of the same [TS]

00:13:19   kind of watery quality [TS]

00:13:21   yeah but they go to great lengths to [TS]

00:13:23   take the burn out of it and I feel like [TS]

00:13:27   the burn element has been injected into [TS]

00:13:29   these starbucks pouches in order to give [TS]

00:13:33   you this [TS]

00:13:33   the in order to maybe try and conjure [TS]

00:13:36   the sensation of [TS]

00:13:37   um like dark roast right that's what it [TS]

00:13:43   feels like it feels like somebody in a [TS]

00:13:45   laboratory has figured out what dark [TS]

00:13:48   roast tastes like and then they put it [TS]

00:13:51   and then they made it into a powder and [TS]

00:13:54   they think what you know fuck it [TS]

00:13:56   they're having coffee out of a to what [TS]

00:13:57   do they know exactly they said they [TS]

00:13:59   probably had starbucks in there and [TS]

00:14:01   they're slightly burnt tasting coffee [TS]

00:14:02   before no this is this is gonna be fine [TS]

00:14:05   yeah this is really and and then to top [TS]

00:14:08   it all off the the crystals to leave [TS]

00:14:12   just a slightly granular ill it's really [TS]

00:14:16   it's really mesmerizingly bad we can [TS]

00:14:19   have another i'm definitely going to [TS]

00:14:22   keep him around i'll probably serve them [TS]

00:14:23   to guests you know when somebody comes [TS]

00:14:26   and wants to talk to me about pretty [TS]

00:14:29   good better sharp stick in the eye [TS]

00:14:30   always say you know like better than [TS]

00:14:32   nothing right [TS]

00:14:33   the guy that comes to the dorm is like [TS]

00:14:34   have you ever considered replacing your [TS]

00:14:36   windows make this a really good cover [TS]

00:14:39   cotton haha let's sit and talk about [TS]

00:14:42   this [TS]

00:14:42   are you cooking meats or did you know I [TS]

00:14:44   had never occurred to me to replace my [TS]

00:14:46   windows until now until you showed up I [TS]

00:14:48   mean obviously 25 people have come and [TS]

00:14:50   ask me the same question over the last [TS]

00:14:52   10 years [TS]

00:14:52   you're not going to believe this but I [TS]

00:14:53   was just sitting here preparing a coffee [TS]

00:14:55   for myself and thinking about how I need [TS]

00:14:57   new windows up still come to our door [TS]

00:15:00   for anything [TS]

00:15:00   isn't it amazing that that still happens [TS]

00:15:02   at all i just assume it's a burglar [TS]

00:15:04   well and the thing is that sometimes you [TS]

00:15:06   get a you get people coming door to door [TS]

00:15:09   when you live in a neighborhood as I do [TS]

00:15:11   you can come in door to door work where [TS]

00:15:14   you get a sense like oh this is somebody [TS]

00:15:16   who belongs in sales this is somebody [TS]

00:15:20   who would be a good salesperson if they [TS]

00:15:23   just had the Glengarry leads but what [TS]

00:15:27   they've got is they showed up somewhere [TS]

00:15:29   to that they answered an ad in the [TS]

00:15:31   newspaper showed up to a seminar learn [TS]

00:15:33   to sell windows door-to-door went to the [TS]

00:15:36   days and drank the coffee [TS]

00:15:38   that's right hand on the starter kit did [TS]

00:15:40   the day-long thing and now they're out [TS]

00:15:42   here and there selling windows and the [TS]

00:15:43   only reason that you that you that that [TS]

00:15:45   would be your life the only reason you [TS]

00:15:47   would you would [TS]

00:15:48   b of 45 year old guy standing on my [TS]

00:15:51   porch not taking no for an answer is [TS]

00:15:56   that you fallen on hard times something [TS]

00:15:59   some twists in the road [TS]

00:16:01   yeah resulted in you needing to decide [TS]

00:16:06   this late in life that door-to-door [TS]

00:16:07   sales are going to be your friend nobody [TS]

00:16:10   nobody gets the results in their job oh [TS]

00:16:12   when they're 70 go be a middle-aged [TS]

00:16:15   window salesman [TS]

00:16:16   yeah right like this is a guy who's [TS]

00:16:18   probably living in his car haha yeah but [TS]

00:16:21   you know what he's not he still presents [TS]

00:16:24   well so I always sit and look at them [TS]

00:16:26   and I'm like what's the problem is it [TS]

00:16:28   alcoholism is it like what is the what [TS]

00:16:32   is the failing is it gambling debts [TS]

00:16:34   recent divorce or like Boeing you know [TS]

00:16:37   layoffs but I don't think about you know [TS]

00:16:40   like sales [TS]

00:16:41   yeah can I get a freebie though yeah [TS]

00:16:43   windows the clear choice is that that's [TS]

00:16:48   gotta be somebody slogan alright it's [TS]

00:16:50   pretty great huh [TS]

00:16:51   windows the clear choice that would [TS]

00:16:52   that's a great title for our seminar but [TS]

00:16:55   right that is good [TS]

00:16:56   ah i have I do feel dude are you a [TS]

00:17:00   member of Junior Achievement right [TS]

00:17:02   no that was totally opaque to me the [TS]

00:17:06   junior achievement Future Farmers of [TS]

00:17:08   America they're all these groups that [TS]

00:17:09   really seemed like cults to me i really [TS]

00:17:11   do your team had a cool logo in there na [TS]

00:17:14   it's a day and was very stylized because [TS]

00:17:16   that one of them was a triangle if [TS]

00:17:18   memory serves [TS]

00:17:18   well the thing about junior achievement [TS]

00:17:20   that I liked was that it attracted the [TS]

00:17:24   brassy girls and you know I'm know about [TS]

00:17:27   your new Rix's that's right i like a [TS]

00:17:30   brassy girl and so in high school I got [TS]

00:17:33   roped into junior achievement at one [TS]

00:17:37   point and you know i think there was a [TS]

00:17:40   time in my junior year when I really was [TS]

00:17:42   trying to decide what my course of [TS]

00:17:45   action was going to be I guess that's [TS]

00:17:47   not uncommon that's what your junior is [TS]

00:17:49   for going to transcend if you spend a [TS]

00:17:52   lot of time on alone and orange flight [TS]

00:17:54   suit there's going to be things you need [TS]

00:17:56   to figure out and even in even as a [TS]

00:17:59   junior I was like well [TS]

00:18:01   what my course of action is is to be the [TS]

00:18:05   retired director of the CIA what are you [TS]

00:18:07   talking about like how do you get there [TS]

00:18:09   it's too late for me to go to Yale which [TS]

00:18:11   would be a shoo-in but like how am I [TS]

00:18:14   supposed to and there were voices [TS]

00:18:16   whispering in my ear that business [TS]

00:18:19   business business you know that's what [TS]

00:18:21   they think that's the cult that they [TS]

00:18:23   really try and put into kids business [TS]

00:18:25   business business except for the weird [TS]

00:18:28   things that cause like they were those [TS]

00:18:29   phrases that you were here and I would [TS]

00:18:31   even hear them and use them and not even [TS]

00:18:32   really know what they meant the to the [TS]

00:18:34   kind of minor business and marketing and [TS]

00:18:36   we have class on your marketing and it's [TS]

00:18:38   kind of about advertising [TS]

00:18:40   yeah but but if you here's the weird [TS]

00:18:42   part was like you're in my yeah right [TS]

00:18:44   obviously I don't even know [TS]

00:18:45   did you know what the phrase public [TS]

00:18:47   relations meant when you were in junior [TS]

00:18:49   high I thought it meant like like [TS]

00:18:51   meeting people [TS]

00:18:52   well I i did i had a better idea because [TS]

00:18:55   people used to say to me this is one of [TS]

00:18:57   those things that adults would say to me [TS]

00:18:59   when I was 13 14 years old like oh you [TS]

00:19:02   should go into public relations because [TS]

00:19:03   you're good with people [TS]

00:19:05   yeah and i would say what is that it may [TS]

00:19:07   be like oh like you could be IBM's [TS]

00:19:09   public relations sky [TS]

00:19:11   my mom used to say I think my mom didn't [TS]

00:19:13   know what it meant either and she was [TS]

00:19:14   taking know if I want real estate really [TS]

00:19:16   like to be in public relations because i [TS]

00:19:17   like working with people [TS]

00:19:18   yeah and I mean is an ideal not begging [TS]

00:19:21   for articles about you that's really [TS]

00:19:23   what public relations is haha patent [TS]

00:19:25   idea but it was that it was like being [TS]

00:19:27   the president's press secretary that you [TS]

00:19:30   stood at the podium and reporters [TS]

00:19:32   shouted questions at you I and you were [TS]

00:19:34   like I'm the public relations man and [TS]

00:19:37   let me answer that question be a jolly [TS]

00:19:39   garrulous fellow full autonomy well and [TS]

00:19:43   that was what people that was when [TS]

00:19:44   adults said you should go into public [TS]

00:19:46   relations that's what they imagined that [TS]

00:19:48   I would be great i would be the great [TS]

00:19:51   spokesperson for a company it was like [TS]

00:19:54   let me answer your question that was it [TS]

00:19:57   means that means that means that means [TS]

00:20:00   you're like you get your greasy link [TS]

00:20:02   beggar right well now the average the [TS]

00:20:06   industry's changed but every monday i [TS]

00:20:09   get 40 emails from all the publicist [TS]

00:20:11   that have me [TS]

00:20:12   their list they're just like hi friend [TS]

00:20:15   this is like really sweet about this [TS]

00:20:17   paper don't book group but I so I join [TS]

00:20:20   junior achievement and i sat in the [TS]

00:20:23   meetings and at one point and at it and [TS]

00:20:26   the adult supervisors were trying to get [TS]

00:20:28   us to walk us through the entire process [TS]

00:20:30   of starting a business and we had to [TS]

00:20:32   choose what our product was going to be [TS]

00:20:35   and it's not like it's and we saw and we [TS]

00:20:37   decided it was chocolate we're going to [TS]

00:20:40   we're going to make sure we're gonna [TS]

00:20:41   make what was it like chocolate brittle [TS]

00:20:45   and nut bars and like a white chocolate [TS]

00:20:51   figured prominently in it [TS]

00:20:53   oh and so so much like the real world he [TS]

00:20:56   just decided what product you're gonna [TS]

00:20:58   say that's right and then you decide [TS]

00:20:59   that me i'm a window man is the clear [TS]

00:21:01   choice and then we then we went into [TS]

00:21:03   manufacturing so we bought bulk nuts and [TS]

00:21:06   chocolate and we actually in junior [TS]

00:21:09   achievement class cooked them down and [TS]

00:21:11   made them into bark what charade package [TS]

00:21:17   them up and then then began the real [TS]

00:21:21   process of basically selling them to our [TS]

00:21:23   friends telling them to our friends [TS]

00:21:25   parents and it was a total it was a [TS]

00:21:29   total like Girl Scout scam where junior [TS]

00:21:33   achievement just became door-to-door [TS]

00:21:35   sales or you would stayed stand out in [TS]

00:21:38   front of the costco at eight o'clock at [TS]

00:21:40   night with your junior achievement the [TS]

00:21:42   podium it has it [TS]

00:21:43   yeah your best in your little folding [TS]

00:21:45   table and you like buy some chocolate to [TS]

00:21:47   support Junior Achievement that's is [TS]

00:21:48   super interesting to me because we did [TS]

00:21:50   the same thing in key club which is not [TS]

00:21:53   but it's haha i was in the key club [TS]

00:21:58   member of a key club now and key club [TS]

00:22:02   was like junior kiwanis to your kiwanis [TS]

00:22:04   right kiwanis one of the many many clubs [TS]

00:22:06   I joined because there was a girl that I [TS]

00:22:08   liked it and and we the government [TS]

00:22:11   teacher grassy no she she was worried [TS]

00:22:14   about offending your clothes [TS]

00:22:16   she shoes in there and i went and and [TS]

00:22:19   that mr. Sherwood who taught Americanism [TS]

00:22:21   vs communism was also the sponsor of the [TS]

00:22:23   key club right and and he the entire and [TS]

00:22:27   all I remember of any of this means [TS]

00:22:29   anything anything all i remember was the [TS]

00:22:32   cookies and the cookies was he brought [TS]

00:22:34   into use on the anti-communist well yeah [TS]

00:22:36   installing says kiwanis like like after [TS]

00:22:38   communism but that was an actual class [TS]

00:22:41   until nineteen until the year I took it [TS]

00:22:42   in 1984 it was still called comparative [TS]

00:22:45   government colon Americanism vs [TS]

00:22:48   communism was not great it's very smart [TS]

00:22:51   because of course it's not capital [TS]

00:22:52   capitalism person communism Americanism [TS]

00:22:55   think like that that's really a word but [TS]

00:22:57   mr. Sherwood brought in this is so great [TS]

00:23:00   he brought in time so I don't know why [TS]

00:23:01   remembering this he brought in his [TS]

00:23:03   wife's world famous recipe for cookies [TS]

00:23:05   and can i tell you what the chief [TS]

00:23:07   selling point cook his offer and they [TS]

00:23:09   never go bad [TS]

00:23:11   Wow cookies that never go bad ok the [TS]

00:23:14   biggest client doesn't think of all the [TS]

00:23:16   food that you've had think of all the [TS]

00:23:17   coffee you have drunk out of your guitar [TS]

00:23:19   case [TS]

00:23:20   think about how many things on your list [TS]

00:23:21   of favorite foods are there because they [TS]

00:23:23   never go bad and these were we made them [TS]

00:23:26   like to the last teaspoon we made these [TS]

00:23:29   exactly right and they're the worst [TS]

00:23:31   thing I've ever had in my mouth [TS]

00:23:32   inclusive and then we had to go out and [TS]

00:23:34   sell them so what I'm trying to say to [TS]

00:23:35   you John as I think these are all cults [TS]

00:23:36   they're all moneymakers it's like going [TS]

00:23:38   in some flowers at the airport [TS]

00:23:40   well you know I want to live in a world [TS]

00:23:41   Merlin where the Air Force has to have a [TS]

00:23:44   bake sale to buy a bomber and the bumper [TS]

00:23:47   sticker industry needs larger cars to [TS]

00:23:48   fit all the bumper stickers a paragraph [TS]

00:23:52   the problem the problem obviously is [TS]

00:23:54   that adults have no imagination adults [TS]

00:23:57   in schools there they have no sense of [TS]

00:23:59   what businesses between danger maybe [TS]

00:24:01   during the communism and not Americanism [TS]

00:24:03   and they are cooking up these like I [TS]

00:24:06   mean there was nothing that pushed me [TS]

00:24:08   away from business faster than the idea [TS]

00:24:11   that if I went to business school I [TS]

00:24:13   would just end up outside of Thunderbird [TS]

00:24:15   business schools selfie fucking white [TS]

00:24:19   chocolate bark what you want a nutbar [TS]

00:24:22   and I have an MBA and i'm so nuts but I [TS]

00:24:25   market yet nutbar [TS]

00:24:27   but you know it's all a scam because i [TS]

00:24:29   think by the way just gonna say that mr. [TS]

00:24:31   Sherwood who is his name will cut out of [TS]

00:24:32   this mr. was awesome he was great he [TS]

00:24:34   wrote me my recommendation letter for [TS]

00:24:36   college he was fantastic and also a huge [TS]

00:24:40   double dipper he was a retired I think [TS]

00:24:42   lieutenant colonel [TS]

00:24:43   I think he's been in Korea maybe World [TS]

00:24:44   War Two and a full-time job as a teacher [TS]

00:24:47   si si so he's getting his full [TS]

00:24:50   retirement that's Americanism and he's [TS]

00:24:53   working as a teacher from imparting to [TS]

00:24:56   the next generation all of the hard-won [TS]

00:24:58   lessons that he learned running up the [TS]

00:25:00   hill in John and fairness he's combining [TS]

00:25:03   elements of Americanism with elements of [TS]

00:25:05   communism [TS]

00:25:06   that's a pretty good gig he is in a [TS]

00:25:07   position to help us reflect connect and [TS]

00:25:10   his wife has a killer recipe for cookies [TS]

00:25:12   that don't go bad [TS]

00:25:13   well I said so I'm thinking about this a [TS]

00:25:15   lot all scams every one of these is a [TS]

00:25:17   scam [TS]

00:25:18   well they're they're deep least 30 [TS]

00:25:19   please cami and all businesses game [TS]

00:25:22   business business PR and marketing sales [TS]

00:25:26   sales i would like that i would like to [TS]

00:25:29   see most people contrast sales marketing [TS]

00:25:31   sales marketing PR publicity sales [TS]

00:25:35   marketing PR publicity second part [TS]

00:25:38   they're all part of the same wing of a [TS]

00:25:41   cover corporate like flowchart right [TS]

00:25:44   sales marketing PR publicity they're all [TS]

00:25:47   marketing bleeds into product but their [TS]

00:25:49   own well but I mean that's all under the [TS]

00:25:51   VP of Sales isn't like there's a [TS]

00:25:54   marketing right you got social cloud [TS]

00:25:58   platform cookies but think about it I on [TS]

00:26:04   buddy i don't know if you noticed but [TS]

00:26:05   this year the the girl scouts were out [TS]

00:26:08   of control [TS]

00:26:09   I it's about it I you know I wanna be [TS]

00:26:13   supportive [TS]

00:26:13   I want to be supportive of the young [TS]

00:26:14   ladies but no you like to support the [TS]

00:26:16   girls like to support the girls if you [TS]

00:26:18   let you know you ever you have a girl [TS]

00:26:19   you've got to decide if she's the clear [TS]

00:26:21   choice a big burger brownie it's very [TS]

00:26:23   frustrating to me that all at once at [TS]

00:26:26   the same time like the entire city if [TS]

00:26:28   you go to this neighborhood your house [TS]

00:26:30   the place we went to goodwill that time [TS]

00:26:32   was portal on every corner there's like [TS]

00:26:35   the encampment of Girl Scouts there [TS]

00:26:37   they could have their rifles stacked in [TS]

00:26:40   a pyramid and their first standing [TS]

00:26:42   around it sound like the wire [TS]

00:26:44   it's a lot like Baltimore and don't give [TS]

00:26:48   me the money the you I know now what I [TS]

00:26:52   don't know man [TS]

00:26:53   hey it's troubling to me though that [TS]

00:26:55   like this obviously this is the owner [TS]

00:26:57   this is like how they pay for girl [TS]

00:26:59   scouts it's just weird to me that they [TS]

00:27:00   do it by selling sugar was here it's odd [TS]

00:27:03   well and and I'm thinking I'm thinking [TS]

00:27:05   this was what terrified me about sales [TS]

00:27:09   when I was young was the like the [TS]

00:27:15   palpable desperation in the eyes of [TS]

00:27:18   everyone that ever talk to know you'll [TS]

00:27:22   need this one he know you know that that [TS]

00:27:25   feeling of like every like every sale is [TS]

00:27:30   every sale it's it's it's a [TS]

00:27:34   make-or-break situation like the last [TS]

00:27:37   year you're only as good as your last [TS]

00:27:38   sale or you're only as good as your next [TS]

00:27:40   sale and watching people in sales and [TS]

00:27:45   and I mean I actually the last time i [TS]

00:27:47   was in san francisco i talk i talked [TS]

00:27:49   about this on the on Roderick on the [TS]

00:27:51   line with you i think i might have [TS]

00:27:53   talked about it on you look nice today [TS]

00:27:55   ok then releasing that exception but but [TS]

00:28:00   uh but I went into a that preppy clothes [TS]

00:28:06   airer that I was very excited to finally [TS]

00:28:09   visit and I went in there and I bought [TS]

00:28:11   two suits and all right i do you [TS]

00:28:13   remember this yeah about two suits and [TS]

00:28:16   it's taken me several months to unpack [TS]

00:28:20   the entire experience for because i have [TS]

00:28:25   a tailor now here in Seattle who has [TS]

00:28:27   taught me an enormous amount about how [TS]

00:28:30   close it [TS]

00:28:32   how close are meant to fit men's clothes [TS]

00:28:34   and in in so doing he has like kind of [TS]

00:28:39   the scales have fallen from my eyes he [TS]

00:28:41   has taught me what to look for in close [TS]

00:28:44   and I've realized that a lot of the [TS]

00:28:47   clothes that I thought [TS]

00:28:49   fits a lot of the clothes that I thought [TS]

00:28:51   fit me that I owned did not fit me [TS]

00:28:54   interesting it's kinda like your [TS]

00:28:56   Palestinian mechanic like you've got an [TS]

00:28:57   insider's view now you you understand [TS]

00:28:59   the industry now a little bit a little [TS]

00:29:02   bit and and and the problem with the [TS]

00:29:04   with the way clothes fit if you put them [TS]

00:29:06   on and you're like oh it fits me here if [TS]

00:29:08   it's me hear it fits me hear it [TS]

00:29:09   fence and my tailor looks at the same [TS]

00:29:14   suit is like oh boy this thing not only [TS]

00:29:19   doesn't it fit but it's too its it fits [TS]

00:29:22   so poorly that it's too hard to fix like [TS]

00:29:25   you can't just shorten the student once [TS]

00:29:27   you got here so this is the thing [TS]

00:29:30   Wow one of the suits that i bought at [TS]

00:29:33   the San Francisco clothier that I was [TS]

00:29:36   very excited about turns out does not [TS]

00:29:41   fit me at all and in reflecting upon it [TS]

00:29:48   when the when the little tailor came out [TS]

00:29:52   from behind the curtain to fit this [TS]

00:29:56   garment to me because alterations were [TS]

00:29:58   made to this garment alterations that [TS]

00:30:02   you know that added a considerable [TS]

00:30:04   expense to the purchase price were made [TS]

00:30:06   to this garment when he came out from [TS]

00:30:10   behind the curtain a look a dark look [TS]

00:30:12   across his face and the salesman who is [TS]

00:30:18   also the owner of the store and the son [TS]

00:30:22   of the founder had a very fast talking [TS]

00:30:26   like chummy car salesman kind of pattern [TS]

00:30:32   and he looked at the taylor over my [TS]

00:30:36   shoulder and I'm looking in the mirror [TS]

00:30:37   at myself in this suit thinking to [TS]

00:30:40   myself boy don't I look sharp and what [TS]

00:30:43   I'm looking at is this is the kind of [TS]

00:30:45   suit i want is the kind of this is the [TS]

00:30:49   color of soot that I've wanted for a [TS]

00:30:50   long time [TS]

00:30:51   this is the kind of suit that I've [TS]

00:30:52   wanted for a long time and the aspects [TS]

00:30:56   of it that aren't fitting [TS]

00:30:57   the salesman is saying like oh we got [TS]

00:31:00   Taylor out here and we'll get this taken [TS]

00:31:02   care of you know this is no problem [TS]

00:31:04   we'll just get him to but up poop too [TS]

00:31:06   huh [TS]

00:31:07   and so I'm looking in the mirror and I'm [TS]

00:31:09   pretty proud of myself and I'm imagining [TS]

00:31:10   all he's just going to take up the [TS]

00:31:11   sleeping she's convinced she's going to [TS]

00:31:13   shorten the collar it's gonna be and I [TS]

00:31:15   see this dark look go across the [TS]

00:31:17   tailor's face which i did not recognize [TS]

00:31:20   at the time because i was in the [TS]

00:31:22   excitement of the moment and because the [TS]

00:31:23   salesman was patterning in my ear I see [TS]

00:31:26   a dark look and then I hear the salesman [TS]

00:31:28   say over my other shoulder he says [TS]

00:31:34   Ricardo we're trying to sell some suits [TS]

00:31:35   here [TS]

00:31:36   Wow [TS]

00:31:39   and then he goes back to talking to me [TS]

00:31:41   and what he's saying what now I have [TS]

00:31:44   unpacked that moment [TS]

00:31:45   ricardo came out from the back saw that [TS]

00:31:49   the suit did not fit me at all and the [TS]

00:31:53   salesman saw the look and preempted any [TS]

00:31:57   comment from Ricardo by saying we're [TS]

00:32:00   trying to sell some suits here and so [TS]

00:32:03   required thanks the obvious now how the [TS]

00:32:05   wow so Ricardo just like didn't even [TS]

00:32:08   visibly shrug and he went about what I [TS]

00:32:13   imagined from a tailor's perspective is [TS]

00:32:16   this deal with the devil where his he's [TS]

00:32:20   employed by this guy and he is being [TS]

00:32:25   asked to make suits that don't fit [TS]

00:32:27   he's being asked to do tailoring on [TS]

00:32:30   suits that are like it's by him in his [TS]

00:32:34   profession an abomination [TS]

00:32:36   he turned into a monster is basically [TS]

00:32:40   yeah he's basically serving his master [TS]

00:32:42   he sees like the guy who gets called in [TS]

00:32:44   once a month to trim andy warhol's wig [TS]

00:32:46   haha that's a good look for you bossa [TS]

00:32:49   well and I'm sure like I'm sure at the [TS]

00:32:51   end of the day or when he goes into the [TS]

00:32:53   the darkest room in the tailor's guild [TS]

00:32:57   and sits down before the the tribunal [TS]

00:33:00   like he has to go into the confession [TS]

00:33:03   booth and say i have made size 46 Long's [TS]

00:33:06   i have sold 46 longs to a 44 long [TS]

00:33:10   and there was nothing I could do and [TS]

00:33:13   they have said no you do not get into [TS]

00:33:16   heaven but like it's an apology type [TS]

00:33:18   situation we just empty out the box and [TS]

00:33:20   like just you've got to make this thing [TS]

00:33:21   fit together even though it was never [TS]

00:33:22   meant to work well yeah and so and so [TS]

00:33:25   what what has happened is it's taken me [TS]

00:33:27   this long so sad for Ricardo well I do [TS]

00:33:30   too but I feel so bad for myself then I [TS]

00:33:32   put on the suit now and now that I have [TS]

00:33:34   now that I've been shown how as soon as [TS]

00:33:37   I meant to fit i go-oh to get this suit [TS]

00:33:40   to fit i am going to have to have my [TS]

00:33:42   tailor remake it basically at great [TS]

00:33:44   expense or i can say this is a loss and [TS]

00:33:49   it was a you know it was a very [TS]

00:33:51   expensive learning experience but I [TS]

00:33:55   continue to get email blasts from this [TS]

00:33:59   to this company and close the air blasts [TS]

00:34:03   i get i'm on their mailing list and they [TS]

00:34:05   sent me these like come on in for a [TS]

00:34:07   special fitting fifty percent off all [TS]

00:34:09   men shirts and when i first started [TS]

00:34:12   getting these email blasts I was like [TS]

00:34:15   you know what I'm not going to put a [TS]

00:34:16   google filter on these and consign them [TS]

00:34:22   all to the garbage dump [TS]

00:34:24   I'm gonna I'm gonna look at these [TS]

00:34:25   because I had such a nice experience at [TS]

00:34:27   that Taylor and maybe i'll keep maybe [TS]

00:34:30   this is the beginning of a relationship [TS]

00:34:31   maybe i'm going to buy ties from this [TS]

00:34:34   guy for 40 years maybe every time i hear [TS]

00:34:36   daughters for your daughter's wedding [TS]

00:34:37   you go there to get a tox you get a text [TS]

00:34:39   that's right this is this heartbreaking [TS]

00:34:41   job this is gonna be my place the the [TS]

00:34:44   family-owned little clothing earlier [TS]

00:34:46   report in California this is my this is [TS]

00:34:50   my like airport airplane mechanic and as [TS]

00:34:56   the as the week's have progressed two [TS]

00:34:58   months and I've realized that this guy [TS]

00:35:01   in his salesman a frenzy to get me out [TS]

00:35:08   the door that day in a suit and his [TS]

00:35:12   willingness to sell me a suit that [TS]

00:35:14   didn't fit he knew it didn't fit and he [TS]

00:35:17   and he enlisted his tailor in a [TS]

00:35:20   conspiracy [TS]

00:35:22   to not reveal to me that it didn't fit [TS]

00:35:24   these emails that i get from this [TS]

00:35:27   company have gone from little-little [TS]

00:35:30   missives of joy little imaginings of [TS]

00:35:34   myself being an old man wandering around [TS]

00:35:37   the house in my smoking jacket made by [TS]

00:35:39   this company now they are little [TS]

00:35:43   reminders of horror and I am and I want [TS]

00:35:49   to and I feel like now that this guy [TS]

00:35:52   probably was on cocaine and I want [TS]

00:35:57   nothing to do with this store i would if [TS]

00:35:59   they if they start maybe ricardas maybe [TS]

00:36:01   he's got the goods on Ricardo and maybe [TS]

00:36:03   Ricardo's father worked for his father [TS]

00:36:05   something but like that he's not allowed [TS]

00:36:07   to work anywhere else I think Ricardo [TS]

00:36:09   probably worked for his father Carl is [TS]

00:36:12   an old man that's in a good boss is [TS]

00:36:15   right that's right and and he you know [TS]

00:36:18   he lives back there behind the curtain [TS]

00:36:20   probably in a refrigerator box that has [TS]

00:36:22   a window cut out in it with what the [TS]

00:36:25   fuck the thoughtful it and this guy is [TS]

00:36:28   like this guy holds the papers on his [TS]

00:36:31   kids or something [TS]

00:36:32   yes and and you know and now and it's [TS]

00:36:36   all because of that salesman moment [TS]

00:36:39   where this guy was thinking this guy was [TS]

00:36:43   thinking I'm gonna sell this suit today [TS]

00:36:45   trying to sell some suits here and he [TS]

00:36:48   was not practicing what I'm sure his [TS]

00:36:50   father practiced which is like hey let [TS]

00:36:54   me make you a customer for life and all [TS]

00:36:58   he had to do was say you know what that [TS]

00:37:00   suit doesn't fit you we don't have one [TS]

00:37:02   in your size sorry i don't think you [TS]

00:37:03   should buy it and I would be like you [TS]

00:37:07   sir are a man of integrity and instead [TS]

00:37:12   you know i'm basically I'm i have [TS]

00:37:16   committed myself to a lifetime at war [TS]

00:37:18   with this bit with this person and I [TS]

00:37:20   want to shame this guy with him out it [TS]

00:37:22   but you know what he gave you what you [TS]

00:37:24   wanted he saw you coming he saw you [TS]

00:37:26   coming he knew he knew when you came [TS]

00:37:27   into that story you were looking for [TS]

00:37:29   some old-world fucking suits [TS]

00:37:31   and we're looking to do to be a dad that [TS]

00:37:33   he saw that companies like tourists in [TS]

00:37:35   town i'm gonna give this guy the [TS]

00:37:37   business myself on that 46 that's right [TS]

00:37:39   here comes the room here's the here's [TS]

00:37:41   the the guy from the sticks who doesn't [TS]

00:37:43   wear a suit he doesn't know how suit [TS]

00:37:44   supposed to fit kick kick back through [TS]

00:37:46   cart get anything box cattle Ricardo [TS]

00:37:50   iono hey any rings the bell Ricardo's [TS]

00:37:53   like Oh Papa something oh he comes out [TS]

00:37:57   just like oh please don't make me get [TS]

00:38:00   this suit to this guy and so anyway I [TS]

00:38:04   mean now you have somebody showing you [TS]

00:38:06   the truth you got somebody who's [TS]

00:38:07   teaching you know you feel like you [TS]

00:38:09   trust this guy the right your-your-your [TS]

00:38:10   Seattle tail your trust [TS]

00:38:13   well the Seattle Taylor I trust [TS]

00:38:15   implicitly because he says things like [TS]

00:38:17   you know this is going to cost a hundred [TS]

00:38:20   bucks to to do and you know i mean i [TS]

00:38:23   will do it if you tell me too but I [TS]

00:38:27   don't see the I don't see how you can [TS]

00:38:29   see again like a good mechanic that's [TS]

00:38:31   what I was like about our mechanic was [TS]

00:38:32   he always tell us like this is this is [TS]

00:38:35   in your not going to drive out here [TS]

00:38:37   without fixing this this is broken [TS]

00:38:38   this is a thing that you're definitely [TS]

00:38:41   need to take care of in the next year [TS]

00:38:44   better to do it now and here's a bunch [TS]

00:38:46   of stuff that you could do or don't do [TS]

00:38:47   and I and that has given that guy so [TS]

00:38:49   much credibility with me over the years [TS]

00:38:51   yeah you know I mean and my new mechanic [TS]

00:38:53   is like that now my old mechanic was a [TS]

00:38:55   guy that that i took my stuff to for [TS]

00:38:59   years and years and years and the [TS]

00:39:01   falling out that he and i had was he [TS]

00:39:03   said your your truck needs a new brake [TS]

00:39:05   job that needs an entire brake job it's [TS]

00:39:07   you know 1,200 bucks and I was like well [TS]

00:39:10   in all honesty like do you think it's [TS]

00:39:14   worth it gives a likely lifetime [TS]

00:39:17   yeah this is that this is one of those [TS]

00:39:19   questions friend-to-friend do you think [TS]

00:39:23   it's worth it to do this work and he uh [TS]

00:39:28   you know and like a cold light shone on [TS]

00:39:32   him and he shrugged his shoulders and [TS]

00:39:34   said it's up to you [TS]

00:39:35   hmm and I was like after all the work [TS]

00:39:39   that I've had done here [TS]

00:39:41   you you're gonna you're gonna just fade [TS]

00:39:45   you're going to suddenly turn into not a [TS]

00:39:47   human [TS]

00:39:48   uh-huh you're just like a you're just a [TS]

00:39:50   fixer bot now and it's entirely up to me [TS]

00:39:53   and you're not gonna give me any advice [TS]

00:39:54   and be known what he was saying was well [TS]

00:39:57   I want the 1,200 bucks so I'm not going [TS]

00:40:00   to tell you not to do it right up but [TS]

00:40:04   I'm not going to sit here and argue [TS]

00:40:07   against you paying me for work that is [TS]

00:40:11   like good money after bad and I guess [TS]

00:40:15   it's that good money after bad thing [TS]

00:40:18   where that's where somebody really shows [TS]

00:40:22   me their integrity at least it can [TS]

00:40:24   introduce these other axes to it yeah [TS]

00:40:26   absolutely i think i don't have one [TS]

00:40:28   piece of automotive advice which is if [TS]

00:40:30   if carry the mechanic tells you you're [TS]

00:40:32   really really really need to replace the [TS]

00:40:34   timing belt in the next month and then [TS]

00:40:37   over the next year your wife literally [TS]

00:40:39   bags you three different times to fix [TS]

00:40:40   the timing belt and Jerry reminds you [TS]

00:40:42   that if the timing belt breaks it's [TS]

00:40:45   going to be extremely it's going to be [TS]

00:40:47   like an order of magnitude more costly [TS]

00:40:48   to fix that if we just do this one [TS]

00:40:50   simple fucking thing Merlin if that [TS]

00:40:53   happens go ahead and just get the timing [TS]

00:40:55   belt fixed [TS]

00:40:56   yeah there's a lot more expensive after [TS]

00:40:58   it breaks what ho what i end up doing is [TS]

00:41:01   wandering around the parking lot of a [TS]

00:41:03   fred meyer holding a broken timing belt [TS]

00:41:05   and saying hey I'm from out of town my [TS]

00:41:08   wife and kids in the car around the [TS]

00:41:10   corner and I just need five dollars [TS]

00:41:14   it's one o'clock in the morning but I [TS]

00:41:16   just need five dollars to get this [TS]

00:41:17   timing belt replaced by window comes [TS]

00:41:21   with a free nutbar [TS]

00:41:22   I do idea when I was down when i was at [TS]

00:41:24   the conference on world affairs and now [TS]

00:41:26   in Colorado a switch time was that John [TS]

00:41:30   the most recent ok the the gal that [TS]

00:41:34   student who was assigned as my student [TS]

00:41:37   ambassador who was supposed to drive [TS]

00:41:38   around town and like be helpful i said [TS]

00:41:42   to her on the first day like what would [TS]

00:41:44   be majoring in and she said business and [TS]

00:41:48   I said so what are you doing [TS]

00:41:50   at this what were you doing at this [TS]

00:41:53   conference on world affairs why are you [TS]

00:41:54   engaged in that and then I said wait [TS]

00:41:56   don't don't tell me let me guess you're [TS]

00:42:01   majoring in business because it was [TS]

00:42:04   because advice was given to you that [TS]

00:42:06   that was a practical and and the [TS]

00:42:09   practical major a major for successful [TS]

00:42:11   people and she was like yeah and I said [TS]

00:42:14   but your heart really lies in the arts [TS]

00:42:17   and she said yeah and I said and so [TS]

00:42:20   you're dabbling in the conference on [TS]

00:42:22   world affairs because you want to be [TS]

00:42:24   involved you want to engage with people [TS]

00:42:26   who are like doing interesting [TS]

00:42:27   thoughtful work she was like yeah but [TS]

00:42:30   you're still you're still like putting [TS]

00:42:34   in the hours on your business degree [TS]

00:42:37   because you don't want to disappoint [TS]

00:42:38   your parents she was like yeah I was [TS]

00:42:41   like but eventually you feel like you're [TS]

00:42:44   going to try and use your business [TS]

00:42:45   degree in the arts in some way doing art [TS]

00:42:48   business and she was like how do you [TS]

00:42:51   know all this is this your cart was like [TS]

00:42:55   o.o young lady [TS]

00:42:58   yeah oh you poor poor darlin how do you [TS]

00:43:03   think she'll turn out well she seemed [TS]

00:43:06   like a great moment as an individual she [TS]

00:43:08   seemed great because she seemed like it [TS]

00:43:12   absolutely a terrible fit in business [TS]

00:43:14   and the business understanding whatever [TS]

00:43:18   that constitutes whatever business [TS]

00:43:20   understanding they are they managed to [TS]

00:43:22   actually impart to you in business [TS]

00:43:24   school which I imagine is at the level [TS]

00:43:26   of like like white chocolate bark key [TS]

00:43:30   look it's not going to it's not going to [TS]

00:43:35   hurt her as she moves into wanting to [TS]

00:43:40   work in the arts and she's 21 and [TS]

00:43:44   already has this knowledge of herself so [TS]

00:43:47   it's not like she's going to spend 15 [TS]

00:43:50   years in hvac sales before before she [TS]

00:43:55   realizes that what you really want to do [TS]

00:43:57   is write a novel like she's already [TS]

00:43:58   transitioning [TS]

00:43:59   there's there's more stuff is more [TS]

00:44:02   reasons to discover stuff like that [TS]

00:44:05   sooner [TS]

00:44:06   used to be I think that's absolutely [TS]

00:44:09   right and you see your friends come out [TS]

00:44:11   of I mean John I i I'm sorry to keep [TS]

00:44:14   returning I think I used that is a [TS]

00:44:15   drinking game he mention college but my [TS]

00:44:17   entire college career i mean a year of [TS]

00:44:20   college in 1986 including but so that's [TS]

00:44:23   like six years of college now it [TS]

00:44:25   well yeah exactly exactly i mean its [TS]

00:44:27   in-state tuition at one of the best [TS]

00:44:30   public schools in America was such that [TS]

00:44:33   that's the new new college the new [TS]

00:44:34   school yeah new college was like the top [TS]

00:44:37   among the they call it the public IVs [TS]

00:44:39   and yeah but it was out the door like [TS]

00:44:42   including any Navy including tuition all [TS]

00:44:45   that it's it was under six grand a year [TS]

00:44:47   wow when I think that include housing [TS]

00:44:49   maybe not books and stuff like that but [TS]

00:44:50   you know exist planet [TS]

00:44:52   yeah well this is the joke with my lady [TS]

00:44:55   when I met my lady [TS]

00:44:56   you know i was working in menlo park [TS]

00:44:57   she's working at Stanford and we would [TS]

00:44:59   joke we would laugh haha good laugh to [TS]

00:45:02   Stanford and Stanford undergrad constant [TS]

00:45:04   forty thousand dollars a year then yeah [TS]

00:45:07   yeah and and what I mean like oh my gosh [TS]

00:45:10   can you even imagine and now class [TS]

00:45:12   people in college now what it costs for [TS]

00:45:13   your college it's it's I mean that ain't [TS]

00:45:16   that unusual anymore [TS]

00:45:18   yeah and so can you imagine coming out I [TS]

00:45:20   mean knowing the meager things i [TS]

00:45:22   accidentally picked up in college even [TS]

00:45:24   taking all that into account [TS]

00:45:25   I can't imagine being 22 23 years old [TS]

00:45:28   and having over a hundred thousand [TS]

00:45:30   dollars in debt my crazy entering [TS]

00:45:33   entering this fucking job market with [TS]

00:45:35   your business degree and $100,000 in [TS]

00:45:37   debt [TS]

00:45:38   well particularly plenty of chances to [TS]

00:45:40   figure out the name for you lady [TS]

00:45:41   particularly sense i would say i would [TS]

00:45:46   say conservatively 60-percent of what's [TS]

00:45:51   being taught in colleges now is trade [TS]

00:45:53   school education like if you have a [TS]

00:45:57   degree in computer science and I don't I [TS]

00:46:00   i know that there are a lot of our [TS]

00:46:01   listeners who have multiple degrees in [TS]

00:46:03   computer science but let me just say and [TS]

00:46:05   I and I appreciate you all and love i [TS]

00:46:08   love our fans [TS]

00:46:09   you're about the documents let me you [TS]

00:46:11   don't know that are you the computer [TS]

00:46:14   science is a trade trade and future [TS]

00:46:19   sciences a trade its a math gets a bunch [TS]

00:46:21   of math classes what and what point did [TS]

00:46:24   we decide that now learning to program [TS]

00:46:26   it's a lot of math at what point do we [TS]

00:46:29   decide that math was like the computer [TS]

00:46:32   i'm talking not about math but computer [TS]

00:46:35   man say the last paragraph in your dad's [TS]

00:46:37   voice when we listened computer map just [TS]

00:46:42   different from math if somebody is [TS]

00:46:44   sitting with matt somebody's sitting in [TS]

00:46:47   a room where the light is streaming in [TS]

00:46:49   and there's a shelf of bookcases and [TS]

00:46:50   they're staring out the window and then [TS]

00:46:51   thinking about math then yes that's an [TS]

00:46:56   art I agree that that isn't that that [TS]

00:46:59   those that kind of maths and I and I [TS]

00:47:01   would put an s at the end Jack as an [TS]

00:47:03   english-style yeah English Maths oxford [TS]

00:47:05   maths those are those belong in the [TS]

00:47:08   college of arts and sciences but if you [TS]

00:47:11   are wasting their money on computer math [TS]

00:47:13   computer baths you could get that at the [TS]

00:47:17   itt technical school [TS]

00:47:19   oh my god and that's where that should [TS]

00:47:21   be taught computer math work on the [TS]

00:47:23   street like beat it [TS]

00:47:25   well because more and more every time I [TS]

00:47:27   talk to a computer person they are [TS]

00:47:29   saying oh now i'm using XDA html5 and [TS]

00:47:35   these languages now are sorry easy to [TS]

00:47:37   use because all you have to do is say to [TS]

00:47:39   the computer computer make an appt what [TS]

00:47:43   slight safeword get at it you put a [TS]

00:47:46   couple of Colin's backslashes and then [TS]

00:47:50   the math is done for you by the machine [TS]

00:47:53   the thing is that i don't understand the [TS]

00:47:57   episodes you definitely put out i don't [TS]

00:47:59   understand it [TS]

00:48:00   most of his big touring colleges now and [TS]

00:48:05   business the entire business trade [TS]

00:48:07   school it's a trace great school [TS]

00:48:08   it's a trade school the entire of you [TS]

00:48:11   know like if it unless you unless your [TS]

00:48:14   education involves a certain number of [TS]

00:48:17   hours sitting in a window sitting in a [TS]

00:48:19   room staring out the window then you [TS]

00:48:23   don't need to be in college college is [TS]

00:48:25   basically a building of windows may just [TS]

00:48:29   be stared out of and every once in a [TS]

00:48:32   while you talk to somebody in a tweet [TS]

00:48:34   jacket and heat and he asked and in [TS]

00:48:36   answer to your questions he asks you [TS]

00:48:38   more questions [TS]

00:48:39   look to your left and look to your right [TS]

00:48:41   one of those will fail out of trade [TS]

00:48:45   school maths if you have you asked a [TS]

00:48:47   professor a question and he gives you an [TS]

00:48:49   answer that is not phrased as a question [TS]

00:48:51   you know you belong in trade school I [TS]

00:48:54   think I blacked out at some point I so [TS]

00:48:57   you're saying it's not a good deal i'm [TS]

00:48:59   saying that college that what we've done [TS]

00:49:01   as a as a country is at a certain point [TS]

00:49:04   fifty sixty years ago we decided that [TS]

00:49:07   College was the symbol of upward [TS]

00:49:10   mobility that that my parents didn't go [TS]

00:49:13   to college and i'm going to go to [TS]

00:49:14   college or I didn't go to college and [TS]

00:49:16   i'm going to put my son through college [TS]

00:49:17   and that's how we know that America is [TS]

00:49:20   growing and that we are providing [TS]

00:49:22   opportunity to find you just get your [TS]

00:49:24   ticket punched for an office job that's [TS]

00:49:25   all it is too [TS]

00:49:26   that's pretty much other is right that's [TS]

00:49:27   saying and so so when and we have [TS]

00:49:30   increased on we have increased [TS]

00:49:31   dramatically on the technical side the [TS]

00:49:34   amount of technical knowledge that's [TS]

00:49:36   required to have a basic job now but [TS]

00:49:39   getting of our colons and stuff you [TS]

00:49:41   gotta know about call he had nowhere to [TS]

00:49:42   put the back HTML you gotta know about a [TS]

00:49:45   bit ly and that and you got it know [TS]

00:49:48   about you know you gotta put stuff in a [TS]

00:49:50   cloud but all of that is the equivalence [TS]

00:49:55   you know it is it's basically the quote [TS]

00:49:57   the equivalent of of knowing how to [TS]

00:49:59   operate a steam engine [TS]

00:50:01   you know it's not true operating esteem [TS]

00:50:04   it was very difficult [TS]

00:50:06   oh my goodness it was very difficult and [TS]

00:50:09   now the steam the steam that is powering [TS]

00:50:12   the steam engine is bits and then its [TS]

00:50:15   cloud its class basically clouds your [TS]

00:50:17   platform or social yet full circle [TS]

00:50:20   kunisada cloud I I feel bad for that gal [TS]

00:50:25   that's tough boy having hear all that [TS]

00:50:28   advice but you know that occurs to me is [TS]

00:50:32   like if you think about like almost [TS]

00:50:33   everybody we know just fell ass [TS]

00:50:35   backwards into something and who knows [TS]

00:50:38   right it's just equus right moment snap [TS]

00:50:40   together like magnets [TS]

00:50:41   who knows why anything turns out the way [TS]

00:50:42   it does the college could just be by [TS]

00:50:44   virtue of the fact that college mostly [TS]

00:50:45   kept you out of trouble for really [TS]

00:50:47   difficult years is a good thing for a [TS]

00:50:49   lot of people don't know it's difficult [TS]

00:50:51   it's difficult to control for all the [TS]

00:50:53   different ways the college leads to [TS]

00:50:54   success but you have to include things [TS]

00:50:56   like networking you have to include I [TS]

00:50:58   mean but that's the thing that is though [TS]

00:50:59   I in retrospect it's like so much of [TS]

00:51:01   what actually got me jobs had absolutely [TS]

00:51:04   nothing to do with liberal arts and [TS]

00:51:06   everything to do with all the other shit [TS]

00:51:07   i picked up and learning how to put up [TS]

00:51:08   with bullshit [TS]

00:51:09   well this is what I'm saying like there [TS]

00:51:11   has been a there has been a college [TS]

00:51:12   inflation to the point that I mean [TS]

00:51:14   honestly Marlon there was a time there [TS]

00:51:17   was time before world war two where [TS]

00:51:19   we're a very small percentage of people [TS]

00:51:21   went to college and the GI Bill i [TS]

00:51:25   basically it's it's basically the Jews [TS]

00:51:29   but stop you right there [TS]

00:51:33   no way no way i am on a roll [TS]
