00:00:19   [Music] [TS]

00:00:24   hello I John I Berlin half-sick going [TS]

00:00:29   good did you put it [TS]

00:00:31   did you put your avatar in your skype [TS]

00:00:34   profile isn't it it's jarring it's like [TS]

00:00:38   we've been doing this a long time in [TS]

00:00:39   this there was never an avatar and in [TS]

00:00:44   your profile [TS]

00:00:45   well what you what you probably it is [TS]

00:00:47   now but you probably stopped noticing [TS]

00:00:49   was that what I had up there was [TS]

00:00:51   whatever I threw into skype in order to [TS]

00:00:54   have an image and probably 2003 yeah [TS]

00:00:57   yeah it was a selfie this selfie before [TS]

00:00:59   we call it that a placeholder image that [TS]

00:01:01   was there for a long time and now you've [TS]

00:01:04   gone and you clean up your metadata your [TS]

00:01:06   image could use a refresh [TS]

00:01:09   haha what is my image i don't see a [TS]

00:01:12   screen grab for you can't really [TS]

00:01:13   appreciate because you're probably [TS]

00:01:14   seeing it at the small size doesn't that [TS]

00:01:16   does not exaggerate the loftiness of it [TS]

00:01:20   so you got any field glasses you look [TS]

00:01:22   like you're blowing out an imaginary [TS]

00:01:23   birthday candle and it it looks like [TS]

00:01:27   it's being presented at approximately [TS]

00:01:30   twelve times of the intended image size [TS]

00:01:32   kinda looks like somebody smeared [TS]

00:01:35   vaseline on you [TS]

00:01:37   well not a good way well you know that [TS]

00:01:39   was the era don't look at the time do [TS]

00:01:41   you remember those days you remember how [TS]

00:01:42   crazy that was i I was I saw some [TS]

00:01:45   picture of me holding a bag of pirates [TS]

00:01:47   booty not very long ago when i was [TS]

00:01:49   really early your meaning i was early [TS]

00:01:53   young me I know you're a gold mine from [TS]

00:01:55   my parents booty pirates booty that's [TS]

00:01:59   before I had maybe that's when I merely [TS]

00:02:02   new one of your songs [TS]

00:02:03   yeah that was a that was a that was the [TS]

00:02:05   thing that was the thing in the early [TS]

00:02:07   days of memes that was a weird thing why [TS]

00:02:10   did you do that I don't know variable [TS]

00:02:12   you for those of you who are who are not [TS]

00:02:14   all the journal keeper not all the way [TS]

00:02:17   in to the wikipedia of Berlin some kid [TS]

00:02:23   came up to me in Boston I was right what [TS]

00:02:26   was the first long winters tour and I [TS]

00:02:28   had little short hair and I just was [TS]

00:02:30   wearing the little close [TS]

00:02:32   that's a little and the guy comes up to [TS]

00:02:35   me and he hands me a bag of a snack food [TS]

00:02:38   and he says can I take a picture of you [TS]

00:02:41   holding this natural then he said you [TS]

00:02:45   know sure at the time [TS]

00:02:47   NEX any kind of communication with [TS]

00:02:50   people was was important than craved and [TS]

00:02:54   so I hold up the I hold up the bag of [TS]

00:02:56   snack food and I and I make a playful [TS]

00:02:58   face like i am thrilled about it I've [TS]

00:03:00   never seen Pirate's Booty before but [TS]

00:03:02   I've never heard of it didn't know what [TS]

00:03:04   it was and uh and then it turns out that [TS]

00:03:08   you you were collecting photos of people [TS]

00:03:12   around the world through an army of [TS]

00:03:15   minions holding pirates booty and that [TS]

00:03:19   was part of your early tumblr know a [TS]

00:03:22   flicker it was a top of flickr tumblr [TS]

00:03:25   well and there's a lot about this that [TS]

00:03:28   really feels like a different era [TS]

00:03:30   how do i begin to count the ways first [TS]

00:03:32   of all it started out as a thing that my [TS]

00:03:34   friends and I were doing on livejournal [TS]

00:03:36   livejournal and I don't know I know I [TS]

00:03:38   don't know if you were the first one [TS]

00:03:39   that was probably my friend Dan who at [TS]

00:03:42   the time I think he's going to Emerson [TS]

00:03:44   he was like maybe 19 at the time don't [TS]

00:03:46   him so he's a full grown ass man now [TS]

00:03:48   attend a very smart guy and he yeah yeah [TS]

00:03:53   you got pictures of you pictures with [TS]

00:03:55   the dismemberment plan not a surf [TS]

00:03:57   classic brands of your classic fans are [TS]

00:04:02   somewhat they might be giants ben folds [TS]

00:04:04   and i don't know why but it became with [TS]

00:04:06   well i don't think i can see why I [TS]

00:04:08   became a think it was funny and it was [TS]

00:04:10   stupid and so then every time somebody [TS]

00:04:12   came to my house and make them take [TS]

00:04:12   pictures with a bunch of snack food now [TS]

00:04:15   how is this different so many ways my [TS]

00:04:16   goodness where do i begin this proceed [TS]

00:04:18   my flickr time [TS]

00:04:19   oh wow didn't really I went out and went [TS]

00:04:22   to sourceforge and downloaded some open [TS]

00:04:24   source content management system [TS]

00:04:26   installed it on a server and created one [TS]

00:04:28   of those like this is a gallery of [TS]

00:04:30   images and and thus was born booty shots [TS]

00:04:33   with his easy shots with Z my friend [TS]

00:04:36   Peter in the eighties he was doing it [TS]

00:04:40   he's doing a considerable amount of [TS]

00:04:42   traveling as as some of us did in our [TS]

00:04:44   in our younger days when we had nothing [TS]

00:04:46   else to do and he used to drink a lot of [TS]

00:04:49   Schmidt beer which I don't know if you [TS]

00:04:51   had that in florida i know it passes the [TS]

00:04:54   basic test of being probably cheap and [TS]

00:04:56   probably causing diarrhea [TS]

00:04:57   yeah you you like it's like showers or [TS]

00:05:01   something right was it was the cheap [TS]

00:05:02   beer down in that down in Florida when [TS]

00:05:04   you're in college not to derail us but [TS]

00:05:06   you know for me about a a bush was [TS]

00:05:09   always people here or an old milwaukee [TS]

00:05:11   and if you got to the real bottom you [TS]

00:05:13   get the like generic ABC brand sure the [TS]

00:05:15   the bush bush family of course are the [TS]

00:05:18   the pan heiser bushes [TS]

00:05:20   yes there are very big in Atlanta those [TS]

00:05:22   people damn it was it was back in st. [TS]

00:05:25   Louis they marry the natural light [TS]

00:05:26   family right that's and that's an empire [TS]

00:05:28   was born in the in the northwest natural [TS]

00:05:31   is a very refreshing beer when you're in [TS]

00:05:33   florida John is already so i'll touch to [TS]

00:05:35   it because there's nothing in it sets [TS]

00:05:37   for Florida it is yellow colored water [TS]

00:05:40   but up here in the northwest Schmidt [TS]

00:05:42   beer really had a lock on the cheap up [TS]

00:05:45   like like rockin it was the cheap [TS]

00:05:48   rock'n'roll beer and it was a lot of [TS]

00:05:50   people call it animal because the cans [TS]

00:05:52   had pictures of different sort of [TS]

00:05:54   fifties a graphic art of like salmon or [TS]

00:06:00   moose or you know it look it look like [TS]

00:06:03   look like like a animal illustrations [TS]

00:06:07   from boy's life [TS]

00:06:08   Oh a little distance it looks like a can [TS]

00:06:10   of soup [TS]

00:06:11   yes yeah we had a little bit of a can of [TS]

00:06:14   soup vibe only this is cool what a great [TS]

00:06:17   logo and it is a guy waterskiing these [TS]

00:06:19   are wonderful cans [TS]

00:06:20   yeah and you could get you could get a [TS]

00:06:22   half recognized for four dollars and [TS]

00:06:25   Schmidt beer just was it was it was so [TS]

00:06:28   good for the money and also it it just [TS]

00:06:33   it felt like a like a lot of beer [TS]

00:06:36   culture that it became a kind of cult [TS]

00:06:39   people that drank Schmidt then insisted [TS]

00:06:44   on Schmidt like I would turn down any [TS]

00:06:46   beer I would turn down any top shelf [TS]

00:06:49   here for Schmidt at the time [TS]

00:06:51   and my friend Peter went so far as to [TS]

00:06:56   carry a can of Schmidt in his backpack [TS]

00:07:00   as one in the chamber [TS]

00:07:03   yeah as he traveled around the world so [TS]

00:07:06   that he could get a picture of himself [TS]

00:07:07   holding the Schmidt in front of the Taj [TS]

00:07:09   Mahal get a picture of himself holding a [TS]

00:07:12   schmidt with the you know the Dalai Lama [TS]

00:07:14   and he he does he still has a like it a [TS]

00:07:20   photo album of yellowing 25-year old [TS]

00:07:23   photos of him holding Schmidt beer you [TS]

00:07:27   know at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem [TS]

00:07:29   and I mean it a lot of cases it was it [TS]

00:07:33   was borderline offensive that this kid [TS]

00:07:35   was standing here holding a beer at a [TS]

00:07:38   people we can walk yeah but uh I was [TS]

00:07:44   with him on the steps of the Vatican one [TS]

00:07:47   day and he pulled out a Schmidt Schmidt [TS]

00:07:50   to you know to to ready himself to take [TS]

00:07:55   his Schmidt picture and he set the beer [TS]

00:07:57   down on the steps of the Vatican and [TS]

00:08:01   while we're standing there with our [TS]

00:08:02   little uh a plastic like a disposable [TS]

00:08:07   cameras one of the swiss guards with his [TS]

00:08:13   like long pike and his big feathered hat [TS]

00:08:18   or whatever he he sees this kid put a [TS]

00:08:21   can down on the steps of the Vatican and [TS]

00:08:23   he walks over and happened really fast [TS]

00:08:26   walks over picks up the can and turns it [TS]

00:08:32   to face him and looks at it any and it [TS]

00:08:34   was clear that he just wanted to make [TS]

00:08:36   sure it wasn't a bomb or something you [TS]

00:08:38   know like if you can put something down [TS]

00:08:39   the steps the Vatican apparently the [TS]

00:08:41   Swiss Guard takes a renewed interest and [TS]

00:08:45   there's this moment that is burned in [TS]

00:08:47   our minds of this Swiss Guard in full [TS]

00:08:51   regalia holding a Schmidt beer and [TS]

00:08:53   looking at it you know it with this [TS]

00:08:55   quizzical look of like the hub the Apes [TS]

00:08:58   holding the are looking at the obelisk [TS]

00:09:01   in 2001 [TS]

00:09:02   and none of us to get our cameras up we [TS]

00:09:06   were so dumbfounded that we're standing [TS]

00:09:09   there holding on campus like uh and then [TS]

00:09:12   he realizes what he is he gets a kind of [TS]

00:09:14   smirk on his face and he puts the beard [TS]

00:09:16   and all happened in just a split second [TS]

00:09:18   and then we were like Sir sir could you [TS]

00:09:20   hold the beer again and he wouldn't then [TS]

00:09:23   he went back to completely ignoring a [TS]

00:09:24   stone-faced like it was this it's this [TS]

00:09:28   it's this photograph that that didn't [TS]

00:09:30   happen that is more impressed in my mind [TS]

00:09:34   I have the eye of this this fantastic [TS]

00:09:37   picture in my head of this Swiss Guard [TS]

00:09:39   holding a Schmidt and turned out way [TS]

00:09:41   better than I expected I I saw him pike [TS]

00:09:43   in that thing [TS]

00:09:43   Oh wouldn't I mean any I mean Oh any [TS]

00:09:48   interaction with a Swiss Guard they're [TS]

00:09:49   like they're like the beefeaters out in [TS]

00:09:51   front of your not beefeaters the know [TS]

00:09:53   what you mean the kind of funny hat [TS]

00:09:54   fuzzy hat out in front of a Buckingham [TS]

00:09:57   Palace you can't get them to keep them [TS]

00:09:59   to respond it's kind of it's like a it's [TS]

00:10:01   like a-a-a-a bro dickhead move on this [TS]

00:10:05   sign with a hashtag on it [TS]

00:10:08   well you talk about livejournal I [TS]

00:10:11   remember I remember people on [TS]

00:10:12   livejournal I was not on lifetime [TS]

00:10:15   whatever your widely discussed online i [TS]

00:10:17   remember being a topic on livejournal [TS]

00:10:19   and I was very upset because you [TS]

00:10:21   couldn't see what they were saying [TS]

00:10:22   didn't see what they were saying and I [TS]

00:10:24   remember saying to you [TS]

00:10:25   what are they saying about me on [TS]

00:10:27   livejournal and he said what happens on [TS]

00:10:30   livejournal stays online [TS]

00:10:31   oh I don't think i would have said you [TS]

00:10:33   did you were you wouldn't tell me what [TS]

00:10:34   they were saying because it was because [TS]

00:10:36   it violated the livejournal code [TS]

00:10:38   wow yeah through the nice thing about [TS]

00:10:41   livejournal that I don't think anybody [TS]

00:10:43   ever got quite as right at least among [TS]

00:10:45   sites i use was just how easy it was [TS]

00:10:47   very easy post they made it you know [TS]

00:10:48   it's real simple site but they made it [TS]

00:10:50   really easy to share stuff with a very [TS]

00:10:51   small group of people and that was [TS]

00:10:53   probably really frustrating to you but [TS]

00:10:55   it was very easy to use and and you [TS]

00:10:57   could you know share things on the [TS]

00:10:59   internet that not everybody saw it was [TS]

00:11:01   you and this is we're talking this is [TS]

00:11:02   2000 maybe when i started doing 2001 and [TS]

00:11:07   it was on livejournal was funny because [TS]

00:11:10   i found myself more and more you know [TS]

00:11:13   writing [TS]

00:11:14   what I would never think of what i would [TS]

00:11:16   think I was a blog and that's what led [TS]

00:11:18   me to go start my first like actual [TS]

00:11:21   according to Hoyle blog and so what what [TS]

00:11:24   has happened to all that premium content [TS]

00:11:27   i think i deleted all of it really you [TS]

00:11:30   never improve never imported it over and [TS]

00:11:32   try to remember what happened I mean I [TS]

00:11:34   had a lot of stuff up there I mean if [TS]

00:11:36   it's probably still up there on [TS]

00:11:36   archive.org a lot of money I i wrote a [TS]

00:11:38   lot about music things I was outraged [TS]

00:11:41   about how angry I was at the shins were [TS]

00:11:44   in a McDonald's commercial and what sell [TS]

00:11:45   outside world that was the worst all but [TS]

00:11:48   you don't change my mind about that you [TS]

00:11:50   turn me around was Dan overly he's like [TS]

00:11:53   what you know what you think these guys [TS]

00:11:55   are making like that's right and like [TS]

00:11:57   now they can like it was like when [TS]

00:11:58   superchunk remember superchunk in the [TS]

00:12:00   pk's commercial british knights partial [TS]

00:12:02   there's a really big deal because before [TS]

00:12:04   it was like around the time that was the [TS]

00:12:08   first one was around the time your [TS]

00:12:09   pocket for kitty came out and the story [TS]

00:12:11   goes according to spin magazine at the [TS]

00:12:13   time I think it was kind of great issues [TS]

00:12:16   when it should spin that had like [TS]

00:12:17   Nirvana and superchargers whole bunch [TS]

00:12:22   like the new bands that you need to [TS]

00:12:23   check out it wasn't there was a moment [TS]

00:12:25   there where we're spinning really was [TS]

00:12:27   really was nailing it [TS]

00:12:28   I love that spin the ladies man i I've [TS]

00:12:31   never missed an issue of spin but but [TS]

00:12:33   the story went according to this then [TS]

00:12:35   this is kind of framing for this story [TS]

00:12:36   was the end of the year pump broke right [TS]

00:12:38   and so as they say but the story goes [TS]

00:12:41   the british knights it's only slightly [TS]

00:12:44   from the simpsons basically they came to [TS]

00:12:45   the Superchunk and set kids a love that [TS]

00:12:48   song you do with the thing we're going [TS]

00:12:50   to put in a commercial because of course [TS]

00:12:52   you talk like that if you licensed music [TS]

00:12:54   as user is what Cooper mini cooper [TS]

00:12:56   people sound like you know but I never [TS]

00:12:59   actually talked to them I just talked to [TS]

00:13:00   the young guy with the British accent [TS]

00:13:02   that's running their ad campaign ok and [TS]

00:13:04   and they said and they you know who's [TS]

00:13:07   we're gonna give you this much for this [TS]

00:13:08   and they're like I actually you know [TS]

00:13:09   that's not really as I think we do we [TS]

00:13:11   sell records me to her and that's we [TS]

00:13:13   don't really want our stuff in and said [TS]

00:13:15   well maybe apparently finally clear to [TS]

00:13:17   them that there's a harder easy way we [TS]

00:13:19   could do this we could basically but my [TS]

00:13:22   next week have a song that is legally [TS]

00:13:25   just different enough [TS]

00:13:26   from this that would still be confused [TS]

00:13:29   by most of your that's with the song or [TS]

00:13:32   you know you can let us give you [TS]

00:13:33   whatever but what would you think [TS]

00:13:34   probably 18 thousand dollars or [TS]

00:13:36   something to let us use this song they [TS]

00:13:38   did it and they were able to like buy a [TS]

00:13:40   van [TS]

00:13:41   well as the classic Todd Barry routine [TS]

00:13:43   goes that I don't know if you don't know [TS]

00:13:48   if you remember it but he did a routine [TS]

00:13:50   long time ago 10 years ago about how the [TS]

00:13:53   the bass player and Fugazi was like hey [TS]

00:13:55   guys maybe we should charge six bucks a [TS]

00:13:59   show so that I don't have to have a [TS]

00:14:01   roommate when I'm 40 [TS]

00:14:03   oh they're so easy to admire from afar [TS]

00:15:39   I woke up this morning having had one of [TS]

00:15:42   those dreams like the last dream of the [TS]

00:15:46   night right the one that you remember [TS]

00:15:47   the takeaway dream and in my takeaway [TS]

00:15:50   dream I was having a minor dispute with [TS]

00:15:57   the shitty gal at a rock show you know [TS]

00:16:02   one of those situations where somebody [TS]

00:16:03   pushed me from behind and I bumped into [TS]

00:16:05   her and she turned around and was mad [TS]

00:16:08   and then I woke up and I'm like that's [TS]

00:16:14   like having a dream about being at work [TS]

00:16:17   you know it's like it's like dreaming [TS]

00:16:19   that you're working at a cash register [TS]

00:16:21   and then you wake up and it's time to go [TS]

00:16:22   to work like to have to have a dream [TS]

00:16:25   where I'm just in a minor social dispute [TS]

00:16:31   you have a minor minor bit of social [TS]

00:16:33   awkwardness in a public place that you [TS]

00:16:35   know I remember such feud streams [TS]

00:16:37   compared to what i used to do I feel [TS]

00:16:38   robbed to have a tree like that [TS]

00:16:40   yeah I felt robbed do I woke up and I [TS]

00:16:42   was like that's really is you're sending [TS]

00:16:44   me into the day with that feeling the [TS]

00:16:47   feeling of just like you know it's it [TS]

00:16:49   one of those it if it if the event had [TS]

00:16:51   happened in real life it would be one of [TS]

00:16:53   those situations where you then you're [TS]

00:16:56   sitting in your car [TS]

00:16:57   twenty minutes later and you're still [TS]

00:17:00   thinking about what you should have said [TS]

00:17:01   to her like a cat for our and you know [TS]

00:17:06   two days later like oh I can and and I [TS]

00:17:09   let it didn't even happen it's a dream [TS]

00:17:11   that's the worst i'm sitting here I'm [TS]

00:17:12   standing you're mad at an imaginary [TS]

00:17:15   person who said something to me at an [TS]

00:17:18   imaginary rock show using that phrase uh [TS]

00:17:21   listless predella scally a you don't you [TS]

00:17:26   know phrase mmm that you know you ain't [TS]

00:17:29   kidding me you know the phrase in the [TS]

00:17:30   one it's basically the george costanza [TS]

00:17:32   moment this means i think spirit of the [TS]

00:17:33   stairs or weight of the stairs [TS]

00:17:35   it's French phrase meaning like it's the [TS]

00:17:36   thing you really should something you [TS]

00:17:38   should have said after it's too late the [TS]

00:17:40   same thing i hate when people tell me [TS]

00:17:43   their dreams and consequently i do not [TS]

00:17:45   tell them my dreams but I say what I [TS]

00:17:47   dreamed about last night / you remember [TS]

00:17:49   your [TS]

00:17:50   yeah i'll tell ya it's just it's [TS]

00:17:51   interesting for regional reasons my [TS]

00:17:55   takeaway dream i had the Manhattan [TS]

00:17:57   person's dream I had a very intense [TS]

00:17:59   super-clear dream that i found extra [TS]

00:18:02   rooms in my house [TS]

00:18:03   oh fun dream apparently this is one that [TS]

00:18:06   happens a lot people who live in [TS]

00:18:08   Manhattan [TS]

00:18:09   uh-huh and III scene i'm not super [TS]

00:18:11   interesting to go into but they open me [TS]

00:18:14   a the the clothes closet where the where [TS]

00:18:16   the ironing board comes down but it [TS]

00:18:17   turns out it's actually a door to like [TS]

00:18:19   another bedroom and another bathroom the [TS]

00:18:22   beauty of that kind of dream like this [TS]

00:18:23   country have a regular little kid kind [TS]

00:18:25   of gem week like you move you move a [TS]

00:18:27   brick and you see that there's a room [TS]

00:18:28   behind their the the really excellent [TS]

00:18:30   Manhattan person's dream though is when [TS]

00:18:32   you just you get something out of your [TS]

00:18:33   closet and you see you actually see a [TS]

00:18:35   literal door there you go oh I never [TS]

00:18:37   realized i have a whole other house [TS]

00:18:38   inside my house was great had a [TS]

00:18:41   coin-operated laundry and was a parent [TS]

00:18:43   based on the expiration dates of the [TS]

00:18:46   yogurt in the refrigerator because yes [TS]

00:18:47   it also had a kitchen was that people [TS]

00:18:49   were using it and the yogurt and only [TS]

00:18:51   expired a couple weeks ago which led me [TS]

00:18:53   to believe that people are coming in [TS]

00:18:54   there and then I felt kind of bad i [TS]

00:18:55   thought you know i am I don't know how [TS]

00:18:57   the least would include that I don't [TS]

00:18:58   know if it is your place that's you know [TS]

00:19:01   la can be very complicated i'm not sure [TS]

00:19:03   that will be covered government able to [TS]

00:19:04   lock straight when you go to sleep [TS]

00:19:05   tonight the first thing you should do is [TS]

00:19:07   change the locks on that place [TS]

00:19:09   ok the man i'm a grown-ass man i woke up [TS]

00:19:12   this morning and it adds happen to me [TS]

00:19:14   the half-dozen times my life I've ever [TS]

00:19:15   had this particular flavor of dream you [TS]

00:19:17   can guess what i wanted to do I was like [TS]

00:19:18   there's got to be hidden rooms somewhere [TS]

00:19:21   i know i've been around the perimeter of [TS]

00:19:23   my house i forget if it's anywhere it's [TS]

00:19:25   probably outside or it's in what appears [TS]

00:19:28   to be you know it's like in a watchman [TS]

00:19:31   workshop figures out there's a hidden [TS]

00:19:33   area by measuring the size of the closet [TS]

00:19:35   I'm thinking there's got to be a panel [TS]

00:19:36   you forget this feeling there's got to [TS]

00:19:38   be a room here I don't have got to be [TS]

00:19:39   like an Amityville Horror room that I [TS]

00:19:41   don't know about because that would be [TS]

00:19:42   so sweet [TS]

00:19:43   oh for sure well I you know the problem [TS]

00:19:45   is i have a couple of things like that [TS]

00:19:46   in my house but but their utility to me [TS]

00:19:51   is is somewhat diminished by the [TS]

00:19:56   knowledge that at all you have to do is [TS]

00:19:59   smoke me out [TS]

00:20:00   like there's no there's no panic room [TS]

00:20:02   uncle there's no monk hole because all [TS]

00:20:04   you have to do is set the house on fire [TS]

00:20:06   on them [TS]

00:20:07   yeah you're back in your secret room [TS]

00:20:09   good job good job little little toad in [TS]

00:20:12   a hole like you'd be you'd be roasted no [TS]

00:20:15   matter where you were cuz it's a [TS]

00:20:16   Woodhouse and there's no there's no like [TS]

00:20:20   what what it really needs ya among colon [TS]

00:20:23   like out like it like a tunnel [TS]

00:20:25   yeah and died i don't think there's a [TS]

00:20:28   tunnel at one point some guys from the [TS]

00:20:30   city came and they had a little [TS]

00:20:33   underground submarine they were they [TS]

00:20:39   were they were moving my gas line and I [TS]

00:20:42   so I go out there and I i get it i [TS]

00:20:45   intervene and I say hey i see that you [TS]

00:20:47   guys are getting ready to move my gas [TS]

00:20:48   line i want you to move it over here [TS]

00:20:50   instead of where you're moving it and [TS]

00:20:53   they're like well and I said well here's [TS]

00:20:55   the thing i want to do i want to [TS]

00:20:56   excavate here where you're putting the [TS]

00:20:59   gas line i want you to move it over on [TS]

00:21:01   the other side and they talked about it [TS]

00:21:04   when they're like all right we can do it [TS]

00:21:05   and they pulled out this this probably [TS]

00:21:09   two-foot-long torpedo that was connected [TS]

00:21:14   to like pneumatic hose of some kind and [TS]

00:21:19   they dig a trench and they stick this [TS]

00:21:21   torpedo in the ground like a spike for [TS]

00:21:24   going sideways and they turn it on and [TS]

00:21:27   the thing like vibrates and starts to [TS]

00:21:31   travel through the earth and it's like a [TS]

00:21:34   it's like a mole on a robot mobile [TS]

00:21:37   pulling is little to behind him and he [TS]

00:21:41   heads off [TS]

00:21:42   he heads off under the yard he the [TS]

00:21:44   vibration causes him to move in any [TS]

00:21:46   direction that he can yeah right here [TS]

00:21:48   look forward to moving forward that's [TS]

00:21:50   that's a very clever primitive little [TS]

00:21:53   submarine rabbi was very interesting [TS]

00:21:55   he's he's going forward an end and then [TS]

00:21:57   when he gets to the other side you know [TS]

00:21:59   they kind of set him in motion and then [TS]

00:22:01   there's a guy on the other side has dug [TS]

00:22:03   a hole waiting for him to come out and [TS]

00:22:05   then it's it's a it's a perfectly sized [TS]

00:22:07   told to run a gas line through [TS]

00:22:09   so I was like wow this is cool said he [TS]

00:22:12   gets about halfway across the yard and [TS]

00:22:13   then it's like oh what happened he's not [TS]

00:22:16   he stopped moving and they tried to pull [TS]

00:22:21   it back and they couldn't get him back [TS]

00:22:22   they tried to go forward he wouldn't go [TS]

00:22:25   forward and I was like oh god damn thats [TS]

00:22:27   this is exactly what I didn't want to [TS]

00:22:30   have happen and so all of a sudden they [TS]

00:22:32   go into emergency mode and it seemed [TS]

00:22:35   like primarily because they really love [TS]

00:22:38   their little mole and they didn't want [TS]

00:22:39   to lose him but they could tell by how [TS]

00:22:41   much line had gone out like how far he [TS]

00:22:43   was probably knew where he was and they [TS]

00:22:45   were they were super worried about the [TS]

00:22:47   mold all of a sudden it was just like [TS]

00:22:49   you know we gotta get the mole and it's [TS]

00:22:52   because I guess it's expensive but also [TS]

00:22:54   like you get attached [TS]

00:22:56   yeah they seemed like they felt like he [TS]

00:22:58   was their friend and so also therefore [TS]

00:23:00   guys from the city in those flat hard [TS]

00:23:03   hats jumping in the center of my yard [TS]

00:23:07   with their shovels out and I was like [TS]

00:23:08   wow [TS]

00:23:09   everybody hold on let's slow down before [TS]

00:23:11   we end up it's too late they were like [TS]

00:23:13   holy they were completely in like a [TS]

00:23:17   chain gang mode of digging and now [TS]

00:23:21   there's a success through the tricky [TS]

00:23:22   really kicks in [TS]

00:23:24   there's a 6-foot deep it in the center [TS]

00:23:26   of my yard I'm like oh fuck like now and [TS]

00:23:30   they discover a giant they discovered [TS]

00:23:34   that that whole part of my yard was a [TS]

00:23:35   septic field for the old have build [TS]

00:23:39   septic systems little all essentially it [TS]

00:23:42   hit a cistern full of poo formally and [TS]

00:23:49   went and managed it he was making such [TS]

00:23:52   good progress through the ground that he [TS]

00:23:53   managed to penetrate one wall of the [TS]

00:23:56   poon sister and then he fell into the [TS]

00:24:01   right into the maha know any probably [TS]

00:24:06   just kept on working and it was just [TS]

00:24:08   like a little [TS]

00:24:09   but he couldn't there's not nowhere for [TS]

00:24:11   him to go with like Johnson [TS]

00:24:13   administration poo right i mean that [TS]

00:24:15   this house has been hooked up to the [TS]

00:24:17   local sewer system at least 450 years [TS]

00:24:20   probably longer and so so now moly is in [TS]

00:24:25   the hole more holes in the in the pool [TS]

00:24:29   hall and these guys with their hard hats [TS]

00:24:31   are standing around and they so they [TS]

00:24:33   they uncover this this septic system and [TS]

00:24:37   they're all standing there and there's a [TS]

00:24:38   lid and they open the lid there looking [TS]

00:24:41   down into it and they're all real [TS]

00:24:43   disappointed because they love moly but [TS]

00:24:45   nobody wants to be the first one down [TS]

00:24:47   the hole and I'm standing there really [TS]

00:24:51   upset that my yard is all trashed and [TS]

00:24:55   these guys just don't you know they're [TS]

00:24:56   like and and the foreman the foreman was [TS]

00:24:58   like this is your fault you told us to [TS]

00:25:01   move the line if we put the line where [TS]

00:25:03   we were going to put it would have been [TS]

00:25:04   fine looks like you must be like firemen [TS]

00:25:06   firefighters being mad like you being [TS]

00:25:08   mad a firefighter because they broke a [TS]

00:25:10   window in your life this is our job [TS]

00:25:12   you know this is what we do yeah I want [TS]

00:25:13   Anna and to a certain extent i was like [TS]

00:25:15   hey look I mean I told you I wanted you [TS]

00:25:17   to move the light it's not like I became [TS]

00:25:19   the box of you you're the chief you know [TS]

00:25:22   the guy who knows that i didn't even [TS]

00:25:23   know these things existed and it was you [TS]

00:25:27   know when i bought the house of course [TS]

00:25:28   we pulled up to a huge 500 gallon oil [TS]

00:25:33   tanks out of the yard one that was for [TS]

00:25:36   the house and one that was over by the [TS]

00:25:37   barn that was different for heating well [TS]

00:25:39   well though I think the house 1 was [TS]

00:25:41   heating oil the one over by the barn was [TS]

00:25:43   a massive tank i think i might have been [TS]

00:25:45   tractor oil or something [TS]

00:25:48   anyway so I had said so all of a sudden [TS]

00:25:51   I'm looking at this yard and I'm like [TS]

00:25:53   what else is buried under here is there [TS]

00:25:55   maybe there is a tunnel [TS]

00:25:57   maybe there are maybe it's a network of [TS]

00:25:59   tunnels [TS]

00:26:00   maybe its tunnels all the way to Hanoi [TS]

00:26:03   anyway so they figure out the guy the [TS]

00:26:07   foreman goes over to their big truck [TS]

00:26:09   with the multitude of flashing lights [TS]

00:26:11   and he pulls out a suppose out some [TS]

00:26:15   elaborate hook majigger that's [TS]

00:26:20   specifically designed to retrieve moly [TS]

00:26:23   from shitholes and he gets down in there [TS]

00:26:28   is like this you know this had better [TS]

00:26:30   work and he manages to hook moly [TS]

00:26:34   can they pull him up and the funny thing [TS]

00:26:36   is we're all standing around this whole [TS]

00:26:37   there's no smell because whatever poo [TS]

00:26:40   and pee is in there is has been sitting [TS]

00:26:43   in their 60 years and I'm like really [TS]

00:26:46   basically compost probably I'm like [TS]

00:26:47   there's no pool or pee in there it's [TS]

00:26:49   just dirt and water by now and make the [TS]

00:26:51   form and turns and looks at me he's like [TS]

00:26:53   oh it's sooo oh it's poo let me go [TS]

00:26:57   come on and it's like it's not boots its [TS]

00:27:01   third certain water but in any case he [TS]

00:27:03   didn't want to get you didn't want to [TS]

00:27:05   jump down in there and so he retrieves [TS]

00:27:08   moly and the unhook him and they're like [TS]

00:27:10   all right well we're going to different [TS]

00:27:14   direction and they ended up putting the [TS]

00:27:15   and putting the line where I didn't want [TS]

00:27:17   it I message they filled it back in but [TS]

00:27:19   you had like a they build it back in but [TS]

00:27:22   they had they had trenched across the [TS]

00:27:24   roots of a big tree that I was really [TS]

00:27:27   worried about there can be no I suffice [TS]

00:27:30   to say there is still an enormous scar [TS]

00:27:33   in my yard from this boulder dash God [TS]

00:27:37   and and you know what can i say but and [TS]

00:27:43   at and also i have the awareness that [TS]

00:27:46   there's a busa stern under the yard [TS]

00:27:48   which is not a thing that i can forget [TS]

00:27:50   you know like a I suppose there are some [TS]

00:27:52   people who can let let time sort of [TS]

00:27:58   fog that knowledge out but so they're [TS]

00:28:01   just like oh yeah my yard but I'm all [TS]

00:28:03   every time I walk across that I'm like [TS]

00:28:04   I'm standing right on top of it right [TS]

00:28:06   now [TS]

00:28:07   somebody else's pool would be if not [TS]

00:28:08   even mine people long-dead party problem [TS]

00:28:13   also is if you did install I said [TS]

00:28:16   network of tunnels even if you installed [TS]

00:28:17   one basic means of egress tunnel [TS]

00:28:19   speaking yeah I everybody could see it [TS]

00:28:22   you can actually cloak your yard which [TS]

00:28:24   would seem suspicious like as you want [TS]

00:28:26   to do that [TS]

00:28:27   well the way to do it is to is to begin [TS]

00:28:29   a capital project where you are doing a [TS]

00:28:31   lot of improvements all over the place [TS]

00:28:33   and the yard is it just a hustle-bustle [TS]

00:28:35   of of activity and one of those things [TS]

00:28:39   is you know one of those things involves [TS]

00:28:42   a backhoe and a large trench and it [TS]

00:28:47   could be super electrical it could [TS]

00:28:49   there's a lot of things could be could [TS]

00:28:51   be happening but people are you know [TS]

00:28:53   you're focusing their attention on the [TS]

00:28:55   fact that you're also replacing the roof [TS]

00:28:58   or building a windmill or whatever it is [TS]

00:29:01   mm isn't it miss direction yeah exactly [TS]

00:29:04   mr. action and then you can view then [TS]

00:29:05   you can you finish off the the escape [TS]

00:29:09   trench and then just let people let [TS]

00:29:12   again let that fog of memory happened [TS]

00:29:14   because people are not expecting you to [TS]

00:29:18   be thinking that far in advance [TS]

00:29:20   now and that that's the tragedy is they [TS]

00:29:22   wouldn't even expect it seems to me [TS]

00:29:24   though if you could even get something [TS]

00:29:25   to get you from like you punch a code [TS]

00:29:31   into the washer dryer something moves [TS]

00:29:33   you go now and come out in the barn that [TS]

00:29:35   would still give you a nice head start [TS]

00:29:37   if you help so absolutely and that's you [TS]

00:29:39   know what things are not to give away [TS]

00:29:40   too much but that would be one direction [TS]

00:29:43   to build an escape tunnel from the [TS]

00:29:46   washer and dryer to the barn if you're [TS]

00:29:47   gonna break ground i'm out the I think [TS]

00:29:49   you should have multiple solutions if [TS]

00:29:50   you're gonna get you're going to break [TS]

00:29:51   ground on some kind of a system you [TS]

00:29:53   might as well have several things and [TS]

00:29:55   obviously don't tell me because I might [TS]

00:29:56   collapse under torture right right well [TS]

00:29:59   one of the things I wanted to do was go [TS]

00:30:01   to the local elementary schools and a [TS]

00:30:04   lot of them are [TS]

00:30:06   a lot of them are using the portable [TS]

00:30:08   method of increasing capacity for there [TS]

00:30:12   for their kids right that they cover the [TS]

00:30:14   playground with portables yeah and some [TS]

00:30:16   of those portables our old the oldest [TS]

00:30:19   ones i think date to the twenties and [TS]

00:30:23   those portables have like hardwood [TS]

00:30:27   floors and I was a cabin at their [TS]

00:30:31   beautiful only like oak floors and [TS]

00:30:34   woodwork designs are basically mobile [TS]

00:30:37   homes but sure there are more shot [TS]

00:30:39   yeah yeah yeah but the old ones are are [TS]

00:30:43   are beautiful old there it's like living [TS]

00:30:45   in a boat except if the boat had 15-foot [TS]

00:30:48   ceiling [TS]

00:30:49   I want to I want to first grade in one [TS]

00:30:50   of those and they had the most wonderful [TS]

00:30:52   euphemism for them they didn't they [TS]

00:30:54   didn't call them you know the the [TS]

00:30:56   externals they didn't call the mobile [TS]

00:30:57   homes they called them the colonies [TS]

00:31:00   mm that's sweet and it was it was like a [TS]

00:31:02   cabinet was just pretty nice setup [TS]

00:31:05   well so what I what I want to do is go [TS]

00:31:07   to go around the school district here [TS]

00:31:09   and you know the problem the problem is [TS]

00:31:10   that nobody appreciates nice things and [TS]

00:31:15   they surplus these things all the time [TS]

00:31:17   and some of them just go into landfills [TS]

00:31:19   and some of them end up [TS]

00:31:20   I don't know where they go but grab one [TS]

00:31:22   of those truck it over here put it over [TS]

00:31:27   the swimming pool use the swimming pool [TS]

00:31:30   is it because the portables and I've [TS]

00:31:32   measured I've actually going to measure [TS]

00:31:34   local portables at nearby elementary [TS]

00:31:37   schools the portable would fit perfectly [TS]

00:31:39   over the swimming pool haha man is in [TS]

00:31:42   that then the swimming pool goes away [TS]

00:31:44   but it becomes like a bunker under my [TS]

00:31:47   little cabin / dance studio in the [TS]

00:31:52   backyard and then how much extra work [TS]

00:31:54   would it be to disconnect network of [TS]

00:31:56   tunnels not much extra when you see [TS]

00:31:59   measure that you're not you're not [TS]

00:32:01   you're saying in three dimensions it [TS]

00:32:02   would fit into the pool [TS]

00:32:04   no over the pool hard it would fit is [TS]

00:32:07   larger than the pool the pool is a large [TS]

00:32:09   pool but the porthole ricc you can have [TS]

00:32:12   built-in it submits like it makes its [TS]

00:32:13   own basement [TS]

00:32:14   exactly you would just the airport i [TS]

00:32:17   mean i have a [TS]

00:32:18   one of those hundred foot measuring [TS]

00:32:20   tapes who as you do for food and I i [TS]

00:32:24   carted one down to the local school and [TS]

00:32:26   I was out there in the middle of the [TS]

00:32:28   night measuring the portables possibly [TS]

00:32:30   go up and came home and measure to [TS]

00:32:34   measure the pool and I was like oh you [TS]

00:32:36   could you could put this we can put this [TS]

00:32:38   portable on on the four corners a whole [TS]

00:32:41   would go away and the and the decking [TS]

00:32:43   the concrete port decking around the [TS]

00:32:46   pool would just become the sidewalk [TS]

00:32:48   around your point the apron around the [TS]

00:32:49   outside [TS]

00:32:50   yeah yeah and then I you know I think [TS]

00:32:52   what you do is you face the big windows [TS]

00:32:54   of the portable to ward the house ever [TS]

00:32:58   get the afternoon Sun and then when [TS]

00:33:00   you're in there stretching to yo get [TS]

00:33:02   dancing doing your seven-minute workout [TS]

00:33:04   I like you there [TS]

00:33:08   the year basking in the glow of of like [TS]

00:33:11   your little colony it would you be [TS]

00:33:13   basically creating a colony here you are [TS]

00:33:17   really close to having a compound it's [TS]

00:33:19   just it's right around the corner [TS]

00:33:20   yeah and i think you know right now of [TS]

00:33:22   course I what we call this house the [TS]

00:33:23   farm but i think if i had one more [TS]

00:33:26   building i would start calling at the [TS]

00:33:27   colony [TS]

00:33:28   yeah at least 17 year old girl named [TS]

00:33:31   sunshine up like the yellow deli in [TS]

00:33:36   boulder colorado all the girls have a [TS]

00:33:39   other all the girls have long braids and [TS]

00:33:42   who now have Old Testament names [TS]

00:33:45   yes and they are making roast beef [TS]

00:33:47   sandwiches those lower that sandwich is [TS]

00:33:52   you have really mixed feelings [TS]

00:33:54   there's there's a certain thing I [TS]

00:33:56   haven't thought about this in years but [TS]

00:33:57   but like you know you discover like a [TS]

00:34:00   girl's been kidnapped her boy has been [TS]

00:34:01   kidnapped and kept in a hole like down [TS]

00:34:03   underground always had mixed feelings [TS]

00:34:05   you have mixed feelings about that [TS]

00:34:06   yeah because on the way your feelings [TS]

00:34:08   are positive and some of them are [TS]

00:34:10   located get let me finish [TS]

00:34:11   yes ok it's not a good idea to [TS]

00:34:13   Connecticut and keep underground [TS]

00:34:14   underground let's just take that is red [TS]

00:34:16   but there's something about seeing a [TS]

00:34:18   cross-section of an underground living [TS]

00:34:22   space [TS]

00:34:22   it was part of it was that I love [TS]

00:34:24   cross-sections but also the idea of [TS]

00:34:26   having a place where you could go and [TS]

00:34:27   nobody could find you if you want [TS]

00:34:29   well yeah that was very appealing and [TS]

00:34:32   one way out in every one of those [TS]

00:34:34   stories there's always someone else [TS]

00:34:37   living in the house with the bad man who [TS]

00:34:39   purports to and believably purports to [TS]

00:34:42   not have realized that there were people [TS]

00:34:45   living in a in a hole under there [TS]

00:34:47   that's always so strange or like you [TS]

00:34:49   know even even Gacy they found like over [TS]

00:34:52   20 bodies on his property and we didn't [TS]

00:34:55   ever seem weird how few young handyman [TS]

00:34:58   came back out of the house that never [TS]

00:35:00   seemed strange well or just that I mean [TS]

00:35:02   that the i don't i don't know if you [TS]

00:35:04   remember the description but like one of [TS]

00:35:06   the searchers went down into the [TS]

00:35:09   basement and this is a terrible terrible [TS]

00:35:15   description but like step older older [TS]

00:35:17   thing [TS]

00:35:18   well that's only found they found it [TS]

00:35:19   because neighbors were like what is that [TS]

00:35:21   smell [TS]

00:35:21   yeah the owner was overpowering but he [TS]

00:35:23   stepped onto the dirt floor of the [TS]

00:35:26   basement and sank up to his waist my god [TS]

00:35:30   because the dirt and decaying bodies and [TS]

00:35:34   lie had just become a kind of liquefied [TS]

00:35:37   there's no ventilation and it was just a [TS]

00:35:41   liquefied certain okay that's that's not [TS]

00:35:44   idea [TS]

00:35:45   no I was someplace dry with no syncing [TS]

00:35:47   up to my waist and bodies now taken [TS]

00:35:49   animal Astraea kidnapped his own [TS]

00:35:52   daughter and father two children with [TS]

00:35:54   their record with her in the hole [TS]

00:35:56   her mother was living in the house and [TS]

00:36:00   never heard never was like other rats in [TS]

00:36:04   the walls like there's never a [TS]

00:36:06   scratching yeah i mean i can hear my [TS]

00:36:09   freaking neighbors karaoke so I can hear [TS]

00:36:12   their i continue the intake of their [TS]

00:36:14   breath and obviously of course they're [TS]

00:36:16   using Hampton application kind of songs [TS]

00:36:19   do they say they're all in Vietnamese [TS]

00:36:22   hey I have no idea how to do you have [TS]

00:36:27   vietnamese karaoke that you can hear in [TS]

00:36:29   your house my next-door neighbors who [TS]

00:36:31   are Vietnamese Catholics have a home [TS]

00:36:36   karaoke system that I my only my only [TS]

00:36:39   suspicions are my only guess is [TS]

00:36:43   that they used to own a restaurant and [TS]

00:36:45   when the restaurant closed they brought [TS]

00:36:47   the professional grade karaoke system [TS]

00:36:49   home they're like what are we gonna do [TS]

00:36:50   with this I don't know we have such fun [TS]

00:36:52   doing karaoke let's just put it in our [TS]

00:36:53   house because it is it's gotta be it's [TS]

00:36:57   gotta be six thousand watts and they [TS]

00:37:01   they sometimes have small parties but a [TS]

00:37:03   lot of times it's just mom dad and their [TS]

00:37:05   son like the way you would play [TS]

00:37:07   Parcheesi or nintendo wii they just sit [TS]

00:37:09   around and sing loud Vietnamese karaoke [TS]

00:37:11   songs do karaoke so I know now if you've [TS]

00:37:15   ever listened to the enemy's pop music [TS]

00:37:18   or your Chinese pop music there are [TS]

00:37:19   tonality these easy easy part totalities [TS]

00:37:25   that are on that are foreign to my [TS]

00:37:29   musical here right there are principles [TS]

00:37:31   that they use yeah that are there's a [TS]

00:37:36   certain soaring so nervous quality to [TS]

00:37:39   the high notes that is paint peeling [TS]

00:37:41   well and at least to my to my like [TS]

00:37:45   musical ear sometime mean when it's done [TS]

00:37:48   when it's done expertly I like I hear [TS]

00:37:52   the back here the beauty of it I [TS]

00:37:54   understand kind of the I understand what [TS]

00:37:57   the music intends i think but you know [TS]

00:37:59   it's a it's a length of musical language [TS]

00:38:01   that's that's foreign to me and so I'm [TS]

00:38:04   always listening to it kind of has an [TS]

00:38:06   outsider curious that I don't think this [TS]

00:38:08   is super complicated is a place in my [TS]

00:38:10   neighborhood where I go I can pay my PT [TS]

00:38:12   belt at this at this place around the [TS]

00:38:14   corner with a butcher pigs and lots of [TS]

00:38:16   vegetables and it's real and the guys [TS]

00:38:18   always got super loud Chinese pop music [TS]

00:38:20   playing and my daughter loves it i love [TS]

00:38:22   it but what I really love is that I get [TS]

00:38:24   to leave [TS]

00:38:25   uh-huh i really enjoy i really enjoy [TS]

00:38:29   hearing aim a cantonese version i want [TS]

00:38:32   to hold your hand really loud for a [TS]

00:38:34   couple minutes then get out [TS]

00:38:36   yeah but the beauty of that music is [TS]

00:38:38   that you can get away from it i cannot [TS]

00:38:39   imagine being in my home and having to [TS]

00:38:41   hear that well do you ever hear it did [TS]

00:38:43   your i'm sure in San Francisco you have [TS]

00:38:46   opportunity to hear that with their here [TS]

00:38:47   this instrument we hear he's got the [TS]

00:38:49   little fiddle thing that people in the [TS]

00:38:50   subways the two string to string violin [TS]

00:38:53   banter these very beautiful for a minute [TS]

00:38:55   yeah but it's very it's very Reedy and [TS]

00:38:59   and loud and I mean I can only imagine [TS]

00:39:03   what what like if you're playing it for [TS]

00:39:06   someone that you love [TS]

00:39:08   well but like when they're played [TS]

00:39:10   fantastically yes like it's an it's an [TS]

00:39:13   amazing instrument like any instrument [TS]

00:39:15   although still a pretty reed instrument [TS]

00:39:17   not a warm something hits a frequency [TS]

00:39:20   that even with my bad ears is a little [TS]

00:39:22   alley but here's the thing about karaoke [TS]

00:39:25   now if something if i'm sitting at a bar [TS]

00:39:27   and someone is doing a pretty bad out of [TS]

00:39:31   tune man i feel like a woman but right [TS]

00:39:34   or or uh or like a rock for or whatever [TS]

00:39:39   you are familiar with the song so I know [TS]

00:39:43   where they are going to strength i'm [TS]

00:39:45   familiar with I'm familiar with the tone [TS]

00:39:47   of the original so I know where the [TS]

00:39:49   singer is failing to failing to achieve [TS]

00:39:52   that tone and I can listen to it was [TS]

00:39:55   kind of grimacing but with knowledge of [TS]

00:40:00   how you know how far the singer has to [TS]

00:40:02   go to to cheap dinner or how far away [TS]

00:40:05   the singer is from actually [TS]

00:40:07   accomplishing what they think they're [TS]

00:40:09   accomplishing in the case of my [TS]

00:40:11   neighbors [TS]

00:40:12   he is a terrible terrible terrible [TS]

00:40:15   singer and yet I do not understand what [TS]

00:40:20   he's going for because I don't know the [TS]

00:40:23   I don't know the source material so i [TS]

00:40:26   sit and i listen and I say there is no [TS]

00:40:28   musical language in the in the universe [TS]

00:40:33   where the know she's singing and the [TS]

00:40:35   note of the backing track belong [TS]

00:40:37   together it would have it is it is a it [TS]

00:40:40   is a it mathematically somebody from [TS]

00:40:45   another planet could look at it on a [TS]

00:40:47   piece of paper and say that is wrong [TS]

00:40:48   like they should knit those two notes [TS]

00:40:52   shouldn't should cannot coexist her so i [TS]

00:40:56   know that i know it does i know it is [TS]

00:40:59   not a question of me not understanding [TS]

00:41:01   the musical language i know that it is a [TS]

00:41:03   question of here and here and he has you [TS]

00:41:05   know he has the wrong kind of vibrato is [TS]

00:41:08   just it just be flat he's just so flat [TS]

00:41:11   and so dead voiced just like dead how's [TS]

00:41:16   the rest of his family and he's not the [TS]

00:41:18   only one right well the thing is that [TS]

00:41:20   what my impression of what the after how [TS]

00:41:23   the afternoon goes is that their son who [TS]

00:41:26   is kind of wearing one of those radar [TS]

00:41:28   o'reilly caps on sideways helmet liner [TS]

00:41:31   and has like 0 and has like a wet like a [TS]

00:41:34   white tracksuit and is just sitting and [TS]

00:41:38   playing his he's playing his gameboy or [TS]

00:41:41   whatever the Sun doesn't leave this is [TS]

00:41:43   what's amazing the Sun doesn't say like [TS]

00:41:45   because he is the son drives one of [TS]

00:41:47   those subaru WRX is with a big wing on [TS]

00:41:50   the back and have air scoop on the front [TS]

00:41:52   and expensive rims like the kid is the [TS]

00:41:57   kid is part of a of a outside culture [TS]

00:42:01   where he should if it's a big fee if I [TS]

00:42:04   were he i would be at whatever [TS]

00:42:07   discotheque it is that you know where [TS]

00:42:11   there are girls right but he is sitting [TS]

00:42:14   in the living room with his folks this [TS]

00:42:16   is a thing they do together [TS]

00:42:18   I never get the sense he seems he just [TS]

00:42:21   sits there while mom and dad trade-off [TS]

00:42:24   songs which I imagine they're singing [TS]

00:42:28   two to one another and there and then [TS]

00:42:32   the window he sees a teenager like our [TS]

00:42:35   early times 25 okay so everybody's doing [TS]

00:42:37   a community like a family thing by being [TS]

00:42:40   there I think he might be the one that [TS]

00:42:41   knows how to turn the machines on or [TS]

00:42:43   something but you know it's gonna turn [TS]

00:42:45   it out there are only 10 feet from each [TS]

00:42:47   other like they could be whispering [TS]

00:42:49   these songs to one another but instead [TS]

00:42:51   they are using a bear using a larger PA [TS]

00:42:54   than any band I've ever been in his own [TS]

00:42:56   and you know but they're not in a [TS]

00:43:00   soundproof basement they are in their [TS]

00:43:02   living room in the middle of their house [TS]

00:43:04   in the middle of a neighborhood [TS]

00:43:05   like you could hear this music like i [TS]

00:43:08   imagine i imagine all the raccoons in [TS]

00:43:10   the neighborhood all like take this [TS]

00:43:12   opportunity to go raid the trash in a [TS]

00:43:14   different neighborhood because it's just [TS]

00:43:16   sonically so I mean even raccoons no it [TS]

00:43:22   was two notes into the background I want [TS]

00:43:24   to try and play two much here but in [TS]

00:43:25   terms of background is this the same [TS]

00:43:26   person where you've had some words about [TS]

00:43:28   that tree being a on the property line [TS]

00:43:31   you have some words with swivel with a [TS]

00:43:33   person next door about a tree and some [TS]

00:43:36   roots and the fruits thereof and so [TS]

00:43:37   forth [TS]

00:43:38   well it's not what I never had so much [TS]

00:43:40   fruit tree or something that you're [TS]

00:43:41   arguing with them about well I was it [TS]

00:43:43   was never an argument there [TS]

00:43:45   what happened was one middle of a police [TS]

00:43:47   action when this house where there was a [TS]

00:43:49   police action in this house went up for [TS]

00:43:51   sale [TS]

00:43:52   most recently it was it was occupied by [TS]

00:43:56   a family of tooth out East African [TS]

00:44:00   Muslims who would in that same in the [TS]

00:44:04   same room that they're now doing karaoke [TS]

00:44:06   Vietnamese family is now doing karaoke [TS]

00:44:08   the East Africans would sit in that room [TS]

00:44:10   with all the windows open and listen to [TS]

00:44:12   what sounded like a like a shortwave [TS]

00:44:15   radio broadcast of an extremely fiery [TS]

00:44:19   sermon that sounded it sounded like they [TS]

00:44:25   were receiving it on a on a crystal SAS [TS]

00:44:28   gutsy well it was gutsy and it was also [TS]

00:44:32   a little scary like there were there [TS]

00:44:34   were a couple of guys and and a [TS]

00:44:36   multitude of mothers and then a lot of [TS]

00:44:39   kids there seem to be more mothers than [TS]

00:44:42   they're worth [TS]

00:44:43   fathers of oh if you're looking at the [TS]

00:44:47   compound John if you're looking at a at [TS]

00:44:49   that I know and one-to-one ratio [TS]

00:44:50   although i think the father's there were [TS]

00:44:53   these were the father's that were just [TS]

00:44:56   multiple multiple multiple wives and [TS]

00:44:59   they would they would sit and listen to [TS]

00:45:01   these sermons that were obviously [TS]

00:45:04   tape-recorded and I think the original [TS]

00:45:07   recording was made in a bunker somewhere [TS]

00:45:09   it was a it was very it was it was it [TS]

00:45:13   was very cultural and I did have an [TS]

00:45:17   encounter with them [TS]

00:45:19   that wasn't a hundred percent positive [TS]

00:45:20   that that was effectively like no no no [TS]

00:45:26   infidels on are no infidels shall cross [TS]

00:45:29   our property line type of confrontation [TS]

00:45:31   but when the house went for sale and [TS]

00:45:35   that family moved out there is a fruit [TS]

00:45:38   tree that object object to on their [TS]

00:45:41   property object to this fruit tree it is [TS]

00:45:45   a it is a garbage tree and anyone with [TS]

00:45:49   any responsibility would have taken this [TS]

00:45:51   tree out a long time ago and so the [TS]

00:45:56   house was empty and I went over there [TS]

00:45:59   and I stood in their yard and I stared [TS]

00:46:01   at this fruit tree and I said I've had [TS]

00:46:04   enough and so the following morning at [TS]

00:46:09   the crack of dawn but most inconspicuous [TS]

00:46:12   time to run a chainsaw [TS]

00:46:15   I snuck over into their yard with my [TS]

00:46:18   trade chainsaw and I cut down the tree [TS]

00:46:21   in their yard in their yard [TS]

00:46:24   wow that's that's that's quite an act of [TS]

00:46:27   aggression job because it well the house [TS]

00:46:28   is empty and whoever it is that owns the [TS]

00:46:31   house ok does not live in the house [TS]

00:46:33   right [TS]

00:46:34   the owner now and there's a for sale [TS]

00:46:36   sign in the corner it's not for rent [TS]

00:46:38   anymore so the owner is divesting [TS]

00:46:40   himself of this property he hasn't been [TS]

00:46:44   there in years he should cut this tree [TS]

00:46:45   down years ago the new owners you know [TS]

00:46:49   I'm thinking this through as I'm [TS]

00:46:50   standing in their yard hands jammed in [TS]

00:46:52   my pockets staring at this tree the new [TS]

00:46:54   owners are gonna move in there not going [TS]

00:46:56   to do anything about the tree [TS]

00:46:58   they're going to assume that the trees [TS]

00:47:00   always been there that's a typical you [TS]

00:47:02   know you move into your house that you [TS]

00:47:03   don't [TS]

00:47:04   normal people don't start cutting down [TS]

00:47:06   trees the day they move in and I said [TS]

00:47:09   nobody's gonna miss this tree there's [TS]

00:47:12   only one person who can deal with this [TS]

00:47:15   tree and it's me and so I went over and [TS]

00:47:19   I chain saw down this tree and i took [TS]

00:47:22   the i took the tree around into my yard [TS]

00:47:26   and I threw it in my swimming pool [TS]

00:47:28   well the the the the the great error i [TS]

00:47:34   made was that there was a second tree [TS]

00:47:36   that I also should have cut down and [TS]

00:47:39   after I cut down the the most offensive [TS]

00:47:41   tree then my brooding attention just [TS]

00:47:45   just who was it was only sated for about [TS]

00:47:49   a day and a half before i realized that [TS]

00:47:51   i should have cut down the other tree [TS]

00:47:53   and then the house sold and people were [TS]

00:47:57   hustling and bustling once the house [TS]

00:47:58   sold [TS]

00:47:59   I no longer felt comfortable you know in [TS]

00:48:02   that period where the house was for sale [TS]

00:48:04   I felt like I'm cutting down this tree [TS]

00:48:07   it's not going to it's it all it's going [TS]

00:48:09   to do is increase the value of the house [TS]

00:48:11   the house is in limbo I'm not taking [TS]

00:48:15   anybody's tree i'm just taking a tree [TS]

00:48:16   from a guy who doesn't want it and the [TS]

00:48:18   next people aren't even going to know it [TS]

00:48:19   was there but once the house is sold [TS]

00:48:22   I felt like okay those new people have [TS]

00:48:24   bought a house that has this tree the [TS]

00:48:27   second tree for me to cut down that tree [TS]

00:48:31   now would be to actually be cutting down [TS]

00:48:34   a tree that belongs to finish the job [TS]

00:48:35   when you had a chance to show your silly [TS]

00:48:37   country i was in country with a running [TS]

00:48:39   chainsaw my neighbors were all you know [TS]

00:48:42   i i've been in there for 10 minutes so [TS]

00:48:44   they were already used to that had 10 [TS]

00:48:47   minutes chainsaw to get used to another [TS]

00:48:49   10 minutes wouldn't have bugged them i [TS]

00:48:51   should have taken on that second tree [TS]

00:48:53   and now that secondary haunts my dreams [TS]

00:48:54   but but in any case the that the fact [TS]

00:49:01   you know the fact that might be it [TS]

00:49:04   enemies neighbors can be making what is [TS]

00:49:08   by any estimation [TS]

00:49:11   music that is a crime against humanity [TS]

00:49:13   and I can hear i can hear that i can [TS]

00:49:17   hear them breathing through their noses [TS]

00:49:18   into those microphones through you know [TS]

00:49:22   through three double walls and and and [TS]

00:49:26   20 feet across the yard and yet the [TS]

00:49:30   mother of that austrian girl couldn't [TS]

00:49:32   hear her own daughter in her own home [TS]

00:49:35   I i totally agree i totally agree and [TS]

00:49:38   you know what though I mean the human [TS]

00:49:39   mind is such an interesting thing where [TS]

00:49:41   it's that old thing I don't think of an [TS]

00:49:43   elephant or try and try and try not to [TS]

00:49:45   think about your tongue while you're [TS]

00:49:46   eating also just thought of an elephant [TS]

00:49:48   we believe that this because no such [TS]

00:49:50   thing as not thinking of an elephant [TS]

00:49:52   right it's that and and once you start [TS]

00:49:54   noticing something it becomes very [TS]

00:49:55   difficult to unnoticed it now the thing [TS]

00:49:58   is a sotry Assad I mean the brass tacks [TS]

00:50:02   have you thought about talking to your [TS]

00:50:05   neighbors about this is that i don't [TS]

00:50:07   that's kind of done in your neighborhood [TS]

00:50:08   is if you're kind of lazy fair kind of [TS]

00:50:10   neighborhood it's a little bit of you [TS]

00:50:12   know it's a little bit of 5440 or fight [TS]

00:50:15   up here but I think so [TS]

00:50:17   so we get along with one another in a [TS]

00:50:19   sort of like wave over the fence kinda [TS]

00:50:20   way it and there's a little bit of a [TS]

00:50:23   picture battle situation where it's like [TS]

00:50:25   of the issues that I have with the next [TS]

00:50:28   door neighbors do I want to a address [TS]

00:50:31   the volume of their karaoke machine or [TS]

00:50:35   be suggest that they let me cut down one [TS]

00:50:38   of their trees [TS]

00:50:40   what is that what is the what's my next [TS]

00:50:43   move with them it's such an adult thing [TS]

00:50:45   John I used to I used to feel like every [TS]

00:50:47   slide you know I feel like somebody up [TS]

00:50:49   in a robot cartoon like slapping people [TS]

00:50:51   in demanding you know duels I used to [TS]

00:50:53   think that every slight had to be [TS]

00:50:55   answered and then until I was like a [TS]

00:50:57   petulant child where everything had and [TS]

00:50:59   today I process everything according to [TS]

00:51:01   that stack that you're describing where [TS]

00:51:02   I'm like I know I these people might be [TS]

00:51:05   crazy i should wait until there's [TS]

00:51:07   something that's actually dangerous to [TS]

00:51:09   both of us right up to bring it up with [TS]

00:51:10   them well and and and there is a little [TS]

00:51:14   bit of the Alaskan sort of the sanctity [TS]

00:51:16   of one's own home philosophy that I that [TS]

00:51:20   like they're the enjoyment that they are [TS]

00:51:23   deriving from owner [TS]

00:51:24   their own home is bleeding over their [TS]

00:51:26   property line and it is causing side is [TS]

00:51:29   called causing me mild discomfort on [TS]

00:51:32   alternate Saturdays in the afternoon [TS]

00:51:35   when they have their karaoke parties I [TS]

00:51:36   mean they're not doing it every night [TS]

00:51:38   oh that's good yeah it's just it's just [TS]

00:51:40   alternate Saturdays it's like you can [TS]

00:51:42   hear that you can use Saturday such a [TS]

00:51:44   nice day to just be around the house and [TS]

00:51:46   that's the father that's the thing you [TS]

00:51:47   just want to lay out in your backyard [TS]

00:51:48   but the thing is Saturdays for them are [TS]

00:51:52   obviously a day they look forward to [TS]

00:51:54   where dad and mom are gonna serenade [TS]

00:51:56   each other with the you know with the [TS]

00:52:00   sound of playing mario kart will check [TS]

00:52:04   playing mario kart mom and dad are gonna [TS]

00:52:06   like our it going to imitate the sound [TS]

00:52:08   of throwing like a fully-grown hogs into [TS]

00:52:11   a woodchipper for whatever it is [TS]

00:52:13   occurring cats and other cats [TS]

00:52:15   however they would describe the sound of [TS]

00:52:16   the music making and so like so this is [TS]

00:52:20   one of the challenges that I have as a [TS]

00:52:22   fully grown person like at what point [TS]

00:52:24   does my does does my interests my naked [TS]

00:52:30   self-interest become you know become [TS]

00:52:36   something that I need to privilege over [TS]

00:52:38   someone else having like the empathy [TS]

00:52:42   that i have for someone else having [TS]

00:52:44   innocent fun in their own home right and [TS]

00:52:47   and it's you know every musician has to [TS]

00:52:49   learn at some point or another every [TS]

00:52:51   rock musician has to learn that louder [TS]

00:52:53   isn't better but that is a process that [TS]

00:52:57   a lot of musicians I guess never learn a [TS]

00:53:00   lot of people don't understand that like [TS]

00:53:02   louder isn't better 444 most people at [TS]

00:53:05   some point in their in there are like [TS]

00:53:07   the louder it is the better it sounds [TS]

00:53:09   and that's what they have going on over [TS]

00:53:13   there they have reverb on their voice [TS]

00:53:15   and they obviously speed and I don't the [TS]

00:53:18   thing is one of my problems i don't [TS]

00:53:21   understand karaoke at all i don't [TS]

00:53:23   understand people singing like a rock i [TS]

00:53:25   understand the wreck of the edmund [TS]

00:53:27   fitzgerald [TS]

00:53:28   in a bar because it just seems like [TS]

00:53:32   that's a busman's holiday for you [TS]

00:53:34   well for me it is but also like I don't [TS]

00:53:38   I because i don't have a Tim here I [TS]

00:53:40   don't understand what it's like to have [TS]

00:53:42   a 10-year right well there's so many [TS]

00:53:44   things that are weird about it because [TS]

00:53:45   the thing is we karaoke the weird thing [TS]

00:53:47   about karaoke if you really think about [TS]

00:53:48   it and let's be honest it's a little [TS]

00:53:50   like bowling [TS]

00:53:51   most of the people who do it are super [TS]

00:53:52   serious about it and then most other [TS]

00:53:54   people do it once every couple years but [TS]

00:53:56   mainly what you're doing is sitting [TS]

00:53:58   around acting like you're enjoying [TS]

00:53:59   listening to other people sing karaoke [TS]

00:54:03   while you wait for your turn while you [TS]

00:54:05   wait for you politely wait for your turn [TS]

00:54:07   you applaud and it's all kind of like [TS]

00:54:09   weird it is not like we're culture [TS]

00:54:10   around karaoke like you got to make sure [TS]

00:54:11   you don't do somebody else's signature [TS]

00:54:13   song is visiting saying I'd only [TS]

00:54:15   imagined I stay so far away from karaoke [TS]

00:54:17   ik it is like kryptonite to me and about [TS]

00:54:21   but like I understand that is what car [TS]

00:54:22   stereos are for right you put your [TS]

00:54:24   favorite song in the car stereo you sing [TS]

00:54:26   at the top of your lungs you're driving [TS]

00:54:28   down the street [TS]

00:54:28   drawings that could be all right all the [TS]

00:54:33   Edmund Fitzgerald and it said net [TS]

00:54:36   against back a dead play the drums up a [TS]

00:54:39   steering wheel like yes you are in your [TS]

00:54:41   bubble and you are having a blast and [TS]

00:54:44   that is that's like you in the tennis [TS]

00:54:45   racket back in junior high and and and [TS]

00:54:48   that that is a perfect example of like [TS]

00:54:49   the tennis racket and ZZ Top's [TS]

00:54:52   eliminator or two things put on got put [TS]

00:54:55   on God's earth by God for one reason [TS]

00:54:58   tennis rackets are not for tennis they [TS]

00:55:01   are forward playing the Eliminator [TS]

00:55:04   record in front of the mirror when you [TS]

00:55:06   are a young teenager like that is that [TS]

00:55:09   that's the that's the whole of it and [TS]

00:55:10   then karaoke feels like playing a tennis [TS]

00:55:14   racket in front of the mirror except [TS]

00:55:15   you're forcing your loved ones to be the [TS]

00:55:17   mirror and the tennis racket is actually [TS]

00:55:20   a 3001 amplifier as I and and and i just [TS]

00:55:24   i cannot so I don't understand [TS]

00:55:26   karaoke I definitely don't understand [TS]

00:55:30   karaoke as it in the role it performs [TS]

00:55:33   with in Asian culture or Asian cultures [TS]

00:55:37   and I further do not understand my [TS]

00:55:41   neighbors particular version of super [TS]

00:55:45   loud how you got to where you can [TS]

00:55:46   recognize particular songs there are [TS]

00:55:48   some that come back you know there are [TS]

00:55:50   something i hear multiple times there [TS]

00:55:52   are others that you know because the [TS]

00:55:54   because the the musical bed is all [TS]

00:55:57   yamaha dx7 like tinkle tinkle cords that [TS]

00:56:04   are just like like it's it's it's [TS]

00:56:08   garbage music to begin with [TS]

00:56:11   it sounds like it sounds like an [TS]

00:56:13   amusement park music where where you're [TS]

00:56:17   at an amusement park and all the [TS]

00:56:18   characters that they're trying to [TS]

00:56:20   they're that they're putting forward or [TS]

00:56:22   like subpar hanna-barbera you can swap [TS]

00:56:26   out a Calliope and put in a middle-aged [TS]

00:56:28   Vietnamese immigrant or yeah right like [TS]

00:56:30   like like that's not Tony the Tiger [TS]

00:56:33   Oh what you're oh no I totally know what [TS]

00:56:35   you mean you know that's later plywood [TS]

00:56:37   tiger made to look like tony the tiger [TS]

00:56:40   which is a breakfast cereal tiger and [TS]

00:56:43   that Tiger is enticing me to go on a on [TS]

00:56:46   a rollercoaster that that you are [TS]

00:56:50   different from the super fake superchunk [TS]

00:56:52   song you get just close enough the PTO [TS]

00:56:54   that's Anthony the Puma clearly that's [TS]

00:56:56   supposed to make me think of Tony the [TS]

00:56:57   Tiger [TS]

00:56:58   yeah except it's got the dx7 chime sound [TS]

00:57:01   itself is love enough to do with it to [TS]

00:57:03   do / do but so so I don't want to go [TS]

00:57:06   over and intervene in there in what I [TS]

00:57:12   can only imagine and I mean this is a [TS]

00:57:14   little bit maybe this is too much [TS]

00:57:16   extrapolation but like this guy my [TS]

00:57:19   next-door neighbor definitely is is from [TS]

00:57:24   Vietnam and is older than me [TS]

00:57:27   meaning that he survived the war right [TS]

00:57:31   he had who knows what his what his life [TS]

00:57:35   was like during the war he was probably [TS]

00:57:36   not i don't think he's old enough to [TS]

00:57:38   have been a soldier but he's certainly [TS]

00:57:41   old enough to have I don't think there [TS]

00:57:45   was a single person in Vietnam that [TS]

00:57:46   didn't have to confront that war [TS]

00:57:49   right up front you know nobody was no [TS]

00:57:51   it's not like there were suburbs where [TS]

00:57:53   you were safe from the war and so [TS]

00:57:57   whatever his life experiences he is [TS]

00:58:00   English still isn't very good so it's [TS]

00:58:01   not like I go over and sit in his living [TS]

00:58:03   room and we talked about up you know our [TS]

00:58:05   shared experience and I just feel like [TS]

00:58:08   there's so much about what he what they [TS]

00:58:11   are doing over there that I don't [TS]

00:58:12   understand that the work that i am [TS]

00:58:15   trying to do on it is not the work of [TS]

00:58:18   confrontation but it is rather the work [TS]

00:58:20   of sitting in my own home and trying to [TS]

00:58:23   learn to appreciate what they are doing [TS]

00:58:26   what are realizing that if there's [TS]

00:58:27   enough of a pattern to it it's better to [TS]

00:58:29   just maybe be out of the house [TS]

00:58:30   frustrating is that might be [TS]

00:58:31   yeah like Saturday afternoons is there [TS]

00:58:33   time to do there to do their show and [TS]

00:58:36   hopefully you know I think they also [TS]

00:58:39   drink so maybe by late afternoon babe [TS]

00:58:43   you know it starts to slur off and then [TS]

00:58:45   like I don't know what happens maybe [TS]

00:58:47   they make love [TS]

00:58:48   i'm not sure but it is a prelude to but [TS]

00:58:52   like I'm i don't much and this is this [TS]

00:58:55   is the thing about is the thing I [TS]

00:58:57   encounter all the time which is that [TS]

00:58:59   other people are irritating and I cannot [TS]

00:59:05   figure out if it is just that other [TS]

00:59:10   people are truly irritating and [TS]

00:59:12   everybody else pretends that they're not [TS]

00:59:14   or whether there is something in me [TS]

00:59:17   where I am just more irritated by other [TS]

00:59:20   people I'd i don't think i am more [TS]

00:59:22   irritated by other people i just think [TS]

00:59:24   that I think that everybody else assumes [TS]

00:59:26   that other people just a guy I have no [TS]

00:59:30   idea honestly I have no idea how people [TS]

00:59:32   work downtown and don't get into fist [TS]

00:59:36   fights everyday I i totally agree and so [TS]

00:59:39   you know right now the other neighbor my [TS]

00:59:41   neighbor across the street is running [TS]

00:59:43   some kind of losers lounge halfway house [TS]

00:59:45   finish this one had the guy living in [TS]

00:59:47   the RV the guys still living in the rbg [TS]

00:59:49   was out he was out walking down the [TS]

00:59:50   middle of the street the other day in a [TS]

00:59:52   leather vest with no shirt on the letter [TS]

00:59:55   best had the harley-davidson symbol [TS]

00:59:57   across the back and he was walking down [TS]

00:59:59   the middle of the [TS]

00:59:59   the middle of the [TS]

01:00:00   street in a gunslinger pose like camp [TS]

01:00:03   out and he's walking he's obviously [TS]

01:00:07   walking to the store to get a beer and [TS]

01:00:09   in his mind she's like in a showdown [TS]

01:00:12   Spurs thick chick and I think and I'm [TS]

01:00:15   looking at him and I'm just like there [TS]

01:00:17   are so many things that i want to say to [TS]

01:00:19   you right now and I'm and I can't I like [TS]

01:00:24   prioritizing what to say to the drunk [TS]

01:00:27   guy living in his van behind my [TS]

01:00:28   neighbors hedge like when you when you [TS]

01:00:31   run down the list [TS]

01:00:33   the answer is say nothing to the guy [TS]

01:00:34   because the first communication I'm [TS]

01:00:37   gonna have with this guy is going to be [TS]

01:00:39   what I'm standing next to a cop and the [TS]

01:00:43   cop is saying how long has this been [TS]

01:00:45   going on and the highest said hey I say [TS]

01:00:48   you know what officer the reality is all [TS]

01:00:51   this all gotta go like this guy is it is [TS]

01:00:54   unsafe at any speed i mean it's it's [TS]

01:00:56   gonna happen one of these days this guy [TS]

01:00:58   is going to set his ban on fire or [TS]

01:01:01   something something over there is going [TS]

01:01:03   to happen but you know the other guy [TS]

01:01:04   with the mosquito tattooed on his neck [TS]

01:01:06   like he's got his arm in a sling now [TS]

01:01:09   somehow and and the the guy with the [TS]

01:01:13   best and I'm just like okay what's my [TS]

01:01:15   problem with them [TS]

01:01:16   where do I start night and I'm you know [TS]

01:01:19   like I love live [TS]

01:01:21   I love living in my neighborhood and I [TS]

01:01:24   think what i am trying to learn is a is [TS]

01:01:26   a is a little bit of acceptance I'm [TS]

01:01:28   learning a little bit of like this is my [TS]

01:01:31   neighborhood and this is what happens in [TS]

01:01:33   and if I what if I was living north of [TS]

01:01:35   the ship canal if I had paid three times [TS]

01:01:37   more than I paid for my house then the [TS]

01:01:40   neighbor next door of my neighbors [TS]

01:01:43   around me would probably be even more [TS]

01:01:44   entitled and they would be out in the [TS]

01:01:47   backyard playing yoga music [TS]

01:01:50   me and they would have have qualms with [TS]

01:01:53   you that they would bring up with the [TS]

01:01:54   homeowners association about how you use [TS]

01:01:56   the wrong shade of white on your mailbox [TS]

01:01:57   or somebody or something worse [TS]

01:01:59   yeah you know it's so funny i feel have [TS]

01:02:01   evolved a lot with this stuff there's [TS]

01:02:03   still stuff that bugs me and I try not [TS]

01:02:05   to be noisome to other people but just I [TS]

01:02:08   don't know and there's still some kinds [TS]

01:02:10   of things were like there's something [TS]

01:02:12   about the basic and possibility of the [TS]

01:02:14   situation that makes it worse look in [TS]

01:02:15   your case it's like they're not bad [TS]

01:02:17   people you don't wanna go over there and [TS]

01:02:19   like read them the riot act and be that [TS]

01:02:20   guy who's always complaining i think [TS]

01:02:22   they're super nice there's no note [TS]

01:02:24   they're not broadcasting any sermons [TS]

01:02:26   nobody's parking their car on the lawn [TS]

01:02:28   I don't like if you're going to have [TS]

01:02:29   somebody making a lot of noise how nice [TS]

01:02:31   is it that it's like it's a family of [TS]

01:02:32   homeowners like singing together that's [TS]

01:02:34   kind of nice [TS]

01:02:35   it's kind of a neat but you get [TS]

01:02:37   something like the barking dog situation [TS]

01:02:38   and there's so few ways to handle that [TS]

01:02:42   in a way that isn't from the get-go [TS]

01:02:44   confrontational because by the time you [TS]

01:02:46   say like okay I'm gonna be a patient [TS]

01:02:47   person even though this dog is literally [TS]

01:02:50   barking all day long making me into an [TS]

01:02:52   insane person i'm not going to complain [TS]

01:02:54   about it but then by the time you very [TS]

01:02:56   first like an approach the topic you're [TS]

01:02:58   already so loaded for bear [TS]

01:03:00   yeah and they're like well you know what [TS]

01:03:01   do you want me to do about it i have a [TS]

01:03:02   dog barks deal right right that seems to [TS]

01:03:05   be the attitude [TS]

01:03:07   whereas somebody like me who's on the [TS]

01:03:08   other end of the barking dog situation [TS]

01:03:10   is kind of like well you know I thing is [TS]

01:03:12   i noticed this and I've got a lot of [TS]

01:03:16   other people do too [TS]

01:03:17   nobody wants to be a dick and call the [TS]

01:03:19   police and they say nobody else has [TS]

01:03:21   complained get this a lot i get this a [TS]

01:03:25   lot [TS]

01:03:25   nobody else has complained oh it's you [TS]

01:03:27   love dogs [TS]

01:03:28   people love their dogs harf harf up our [TS]

01:03:32   five-part yesterday some somebody here [TS]

01:03:35   in the neighborhood I don't know who [TS]

01:03:36   either had their either had their nice [TS]

01:03:41   over visiting or it might be the family [TS]

01:03:44   on the far corner that has a lot of kids [TS]

01:03:46   but whatever it was I was sitting in my [TS]

01:03:49   bathtub as you do in the afternoon [TS]

01:03:51   on Sunday and some little girl that I [TS]

01:03:55   estimate was between the ages of five [TS]

01:03:58   and seven had discovered her scream oh [TS]

01:04:03   yes the blood-curdling scream that every [TS]

01:04:06   little girl mix it well now this is a [TS]

01:04:09   question that I have for you because I [TS]

01:04:11   was a little boy once [TS]

01:04:14   yeah a long time ago and I knew a lot of [TS]

01:04:19   little girls I had lots of little [TS]

01:04:21   girlfriends some of my best friends were [TS]

01:04:23   little girls who and i do not remember [TS]

01:04:26   in the nineteen seventies little girls [TS]

01:04:30   entertaining themselves with a [TS]

01:04:32   blood-curdling scream shrieking is a [TS]

01:04:35   thing you see it sometimes will go to [TS]

01:04:37   the playground you know you think you [TS]

01:04:38   got problems the kids I go home my kids [TS]

01:04:39   such a pain it's so hard to get her to [TS]

01:04:41   put her socks on and then we go to the [TS]

01:04:43   playground and there's like a child [TS]

01:04:44   that's like a Hellion and yes there are [TS]

01:04:46   little girls who would just stand on top [TS]

01:04:48   of the the slide and shriek an hour and [TS]

01:04:51   that's the thing [TS]

01:04:51   well so that was not it didn't used to [TS]

01:04:53   be a thing it's it is a cultural thing [TS]

01:04:56   that vaccinations causes probably fact [TS]

01:04:59   the nation's exactly right it's you know [TS]

01:05:02   what it is it's all the estrogen or [TS]

01:05:03   drinking water [TS]

01:05:04   chemtrails head but somewhere along the [TS]

01:05:08   line little girls have been have taught [TS]

01:05:13   one another and i think it is something [TS]

01:05:15   that they learn from one another but [TS]

01:05:17   they are they are i don't think it's [TS]

01:05:19   something that they are being encouraged [TS]

01:05:21   to do what it is it's something they are [TS]

01:05:23   not being discouraged from doing and [TS]

01:05:25   it's the thing is it's important [TS]

01:05:26   understand that it's it's different from [TS]

01:05:28   somebody yelling really loud which is [TS]

01:05:30   annoying but it's a certain kind of [TS]

01:05:31   thumb like horror movie shriek little [TS]

01:05:35   girls [TS]

01:05:36   yes yes and then they start doing it [TS]

01:05:38   together and kind of a each other on and [TS]

01:05:40   they look for reasons to have to shriek [TS]

01:05:41   yeah yeah and so somebody you know [TS]

01:05:43   somebody kicks the ball at them and [TS]

01:05:46   instead of kicking the ball back they [TS]

01:05:48   shriek and then someone you know and [TS]

01:05:51   then a bird flies over and instead of [TS]

01:05:53   going like oh my god baby shriek and so [TS]

01:05:56   this little girl i'm i'm in the bathtub [TS]

01:05:57   so I can't see her but she's on my block [TS]

01:06:00   somewhere on the block and she for an [TS]

01:06:05   hour just takes in breath and then [TS]

01:06:09   shrieks as if she's being murdered and [TS]

01:06:12   then takes in breath and shrieks as if [TS]

01:06:14   she's been murdered and the end the [TS]

01:06:16   streak is long and each one gets more [TS]

01:06:19   and more evocative but cannot stop that [TS]

01:06:22   I am i that happened once i would be [TS]

01:06:25   like don't ever do that again [TS]

01:06:26   what will write and i hit the thing is i [TS]

01:06:28   hear there are other children out there [TS]

01:06:29   playing with her and I hear there are [TS]

01:06:31   adults i hear a father's voice I hear [TS]

01:06:34   people speaking to each other i hear [TS]

01:06:35   people speaking to her but something so [TS]

01:06:38   i can only picture and I don't have no [TS]

01:06:40   point do I get out of the bathtub [TS]

01:06:42   because again it's one of these things [TS]

01:06:44   like all right it's sunday afternoon [TS]

01:06:46   there's a family in my neighborhood [TS]

01:06:48   that's out either in their yard or in [TS]

01:06:50   the street having a they're playing ball [TS]

01:06:53   or they're having a family activity and [TS]

01:06:56   one of their little children has [TS]

01:06:58   discovered her scream and she is really [TS]

01:07:03   practicing it and no one in the family [TS]

01:07:08   says okay [TS]

01:07:12   Esmeralda that's enough not not another [TS]

01:07:16   one and then she shrieks again and they [TS]

01:07:17   go you know what [TS]

01:07:19   not one more or or were done and she [TS]

01:07:23   does it again and then they say okay [TS]

01:07:24   that we're done and they take her inside [TS]

01:07:28   and then they sit her down on a chair [TS]

01:07:32   and they have a conversation with her [TS]

01:07:33   when they say that shrieking is not good [TS]

01:07:36   it's not it's not an appropriate way to [TS]

01:07:38   express yourself if you are feeling [TS]

01:07:40   emotional then let's let's talk about an [TS]

01:07:44   appropriate way to express your emotions [TS]

01:07:46   if you are having fun there are ways to [TS]

01:07:48   express having fun [TS]

01:07:50   register though it doesn't seem to even [TS]

01:07:51   a must register but like it its it's so [TS]

01:07:55   far beyond anything I'm so white i am so [TS]

01:07:58   white John like to me shrieking thing is [TS]

01:08:00   not a thing that we should be doing [TS]

01:08:02   it's not even like going to be a [TS]

01:08:03   discussion points not an inside-outside [TS]

01:08:05   voices just you don't just read know [TS]

01:08:06   you're never sorry but you're not going [TS]

01:08:08   to do that it's not gonna be a thing [TS]

01:08:09   that we use week if you are being [TS]

01:08:10   murdered it's the one time that that [TS]

01:08:12   sounds appropriate right [TS]

01:08:14   you need to give you need to communicate [TS]

01:08:15   across a mountain valley that you are [TS]

01:08:18   being murdered [TS]

01:08:19   yes and that's the only war or if you [TS]

01:08:22   are being attacked by a bear which is a [TS]

01:08:24   form of being murdered [TS]

01:08:25   it's true in every instance that i can [TS]

01:08:28   think that is an appropriate sound the [TS]

01:08:30   end result is murder [TS]

01:08:31   it's unnerving though it's really [TS]

01:08:33   unnerving and and so you know you think [TS]

01:08:35   I i think i find myself thinking because [TS]

01:08:37   then now i go to think hole and start [TS]

01:08:39   playing wait a minute this not bothering [TS]

01:08:41   them is this potentially like a relief [TS]

01:08:43   for them that they get to be outside now [TS]

01:08:45   instead of having an echo around in [TS]

01:08:46   their small living room like know how or [TS]

01:08:49   are there people that are saying well I [TS]

01:08:51   don't want to that I think this is a [TS]

01:08:53   this is a thing that that happens in [TS]

01:08:55   parents you know the lingo assertive [TS]

01:08:57   about the shriek or I don't want to [TS]

01:08:58   inhibit hmm [TS]

01:09:00   he'll grow out of it this is just a [TS]

01:09:02   phase and it's important for her to [TS]

01:09:05   selling fake murdered [TS]

01:09:08   it's important for her that she make the [TS]

01:09:11   worst sound that a human can make over [TS]

01:09:13   and over and over and over again in a in [TS]

01:09:16   the public sphere and i'm sitting in the [TS]

01:09:18   bathtub and I like here is again another [TS]

01:09:20   instance where i feel like if i had a [TS]

01:09:23   megaphone I would be in more trouble [TS]

01:09:26   than I am not having a megaphone because [TS]

01:09:29   if i had a megaphone i might get out of [TS]

01:09:31   the bathtub put it out the window and [TS]

01:09:33   say stop your child from streaming with [TS]

01:09:36   the robot voice starting your child [TS]

01:09:38   friends screaming but not going out here [TS]

01:09:42   20 seconds to comply I don't want to [TS]

01:09:45   like open my bathroom window and stand [TS]

01:09:47   there Steven John with the team coming [TS]

01:09:50   off of me going to stop at God for the [TS]

01:09:53   love of fucking God's stop screaming [TS]

01:09:56   it's not but you know but what it is [TS]

01:09:59   it's just like the thing with the dog it [TS]

01:10:01   immediately becomes a thing where you [TS]

01:10:04   are talking to the other parent [TS]

01:10:05   well you're human you're a grown-ass man [TS]

01:10:06   and now you seem like the crazy one [TS]

01:10:08   yeah right left oh my gosh suddenly this [TS]

01:10:10   is a big problem know it's been a [TS]

01:10:12   problem for years and years and years [TS]

01:10:14   and I finally just have one day where I [TS]

01:10:16   couldn't take it anymore [TS]

01:10:17   oh you don't like little girls having [TS]

01:10:19   fun oh you little you can't stand if [TS]

01:10:22   your father you and it's like I like the [TS]

01:10:25   sound of little girls having fun that [TS]

01:10:27   is not the sound of someone having fun [TS]

01:10:29   that is the sound of someone [TS]

01:10:31   cops is especially if they're in the [TS]

01:10:33   pool with this cabinet she is a fact [TS]

01:10:37   that she is fully conscious that she has [TS]

01:10:41   no she has she has arrived upon a power [TS]

01:10:45   that she has to basically rule everyone [TS]

01:10:49   right it's it is it the child becomes [TS]

01:10:53   aware that they have a new power that no [TS]

01:10:56   one else can do no adult can make that [TS]

01:10:58   sound and it would be so nervous you [TS]

01:11:01   know you don't even adult made that [TS]

01:11:03   sound you would be like oh fuck this [TS]

01:11:05   person is possessed by like a like the [TS]

01:11:07   sound an adult would make just before [TS]

01:11:10   their skin split from head to toe and [TS]

01:11:12   the giant pterodactyl that lived inside [TS]

01:11:15   them was freed [TS]

01:11:17   it's a pterodactyl sound yes huh / but [TS]

01:11:21   the child realizes like I am now not [TS]

01:11:23   only in control of everyone that I can [TS]

01:11:25   see but I'm in control the entire block [TS]

01:11:27   like no one can think because of this [TS]

01:11:29   sound that I've learned to make and I [TS]

01:11:32   don't know again it's a thing maybe the [TS]

01:11:34   that I should be thinking about ways to [TS]

01:11:35   harness it if you got it [TS]

01:11:37   if you've got 40 little girls in a room [TS]

01:11:41   and told them all to make that sound [TS]

01:11:43   what what power I see you generate from [TS]

01:11:49   that what I mean you could take them to [TS]

01:11:53   Guantanamo and all of the all of the [TS]

01:11:57   people in shackles there would start [TS]

01:11:58   spilling the beans whatever beans they [TS]

01:12:00   had left to spill if you could take that [TS]

01:12:03   sound and weaponize it who and turn like [TS]

01:12:07   recorded in high fidelity and then [TS]

01:12:09   broadcast it on battlefields like [TS]

01:12:12   instead of playing ride of the Valkyries [TS]

01:12:14   as your as your troops move into a [TS]

01:12:17   situation you just you just play highly [TS]

01:12:20   amplified Vietnamese karaoke and the [TS]

01:12:23   little girls screaming at the top of [TS]

01:12:24   their lungs you armies would three [TS]

01:12:27   before you ever who would go into battle [TS]

01:12:30   if the sound of the opposing army was [TS]

01:12:35   that like [TS]

01:12:36   unholy cocktail of noise [TS]

01:12:38   uh yeah got that you throw your gun down [TS]

01:12:42   and count they could shatter glass and [TS]

01:12:44   advances going into the slurry like Ella [TS]

01:12:46   Fitzgerald [TS]

01:12:47   mhm maxell boy is hard [TS]
