00:00:21   [Music] [TS]

00:00:26   hello hi John I'm Merlin how's it going [TS]

00:00:30   good I when I when I picked up the phone [TS]

00:00:35   i heard you make a sound which I almost [TS]

00:00:37   never do you work in the middle of going [TS]

00:00:39   oh you heard that [TS]

00:00:41   yeah what was that wonder how far back [TS]

00:00:43   the recording begins I'm not sure that's [TS]

00:00:46   really awkward was a little time jump [TS]

00:00:49   well I'm you know trying to get better [TS]

00:00:50   about you know reducing my mouth noises [TS]

00:00:52   was not right [TS]

00:00:53   well you know I I hope it's you know [TS]

00:00:56   subtle change I've always found your [TS]

00:00:58   mouth noises to be fairly a fairly [TS]

00:01:00   charming [TS]

00:01:00   yeah sometimes I hear them and I [TS]

00:01:02   realized there's a lot of making more of [TS]

00:01:03   them i think my body is developing [TS]

00:01:05   existential Fisher's oh dear [TS]

00:01:07   yeah we'll just be like kind of random [TS]

00:01:09   for coming from somewhere [TS]

00:01:11   yeah I've been hearing sounds completely [TS]

00:01:14   to again it sounds silly to also might [TS]

00:01:17   have my array of unconscious anxiety [TS]

00:01:19   noises has been widening posters give me [TS]

00:01:22   an example of some of those well my [TS]

00:01:24   classic I very similar in some ways to [TS]

00:01:27   the dustin hoffman noise in the Graduate [TS]

00:01:29   my classic used to just be this haha i [TS]

00:01:34   remember that noise and then as [TS]

00:01:36   sometimes when i'm waking up in the [TS]

00:01:38   morning and I'm realizing what a rack my [TS]

00:01:39   life is all go haha or again you know I [TS]

00:01:45   i make something very similar to another [TS]

00:01:47   classic does not annoy just a boy oh boy [TS]

00:01:51   that's a good one [TS]

00:01:54   leave the one you do in the morning I [TS]

00:01:56   think Jonathan Coulton does that what [TS]

00:01:57   how did he do it [TS]

00:01:58   nah yeah oh no I totally do that [TS]

00:02:01   sometimes in the morning i just did in [TS]

00:02:03   the noises that we make there's a [TS]

00:02:04   there's a noise that noise and my wife [TS]

00:02:07   makes that i picked up which is like if [TS]

00:02:10   you if you're in the middle of dropping [TS]

00:02:12   something or you know goofing giving up [TS]

00:02:15   something especially when you're [TS]

00:02:16   dropping something she goes like this [TS]

00:02:17   ah right just yeah and i started doing [TS]

00:02:22   that I got a lot of them i got a lot of [TS]

00:02:25   anxiety noises most of them are in my [TS]

00:02:26   head but sometimes they they pop out [TS]

00:02:29   I when i'm dropping something i do the [TS]

00:02:31   thing that I guess I think of it being a [TS]

00:02:33   Three Stooges sound but I've never [TS]

00:02:36   really watched the three stooges enough [TS]

00:02:38   to [TS]

00:02:39   no it's right to make their curly noise [TS]

00:02:41   yeah I do like me [TS]

00:02:42   yeah that's a good one you want yeah [TS]

00:02:44   yeah no no I don't do that it's like [TS]

00:02:47   more [TS]

00:02:47   yeah yeah oh it's like it's bouncing to [TS]

00:02:50   the floor yeah like Big Mac once I do [TS]

00:02:54   the i do that mm-hmm [TS]

00:02:57   oh yeah we both do that i mean i make [TS]

00:02:59   I've been told they make a lot of food [TS]

00:03:01   choices i have a variety from noises but [TS]

00:03:03   those are dyed to play those tactically [TS]

00:03:04   yeah [TS]

00:03:05   beginner the the parts about my broken [TS]

00:03:07   like those come out little squeaks yeah [TS]

00:03:10   yeah mm-hmm [TS]

00:03:12   I'm not sure that I make a lot of [TS]

00:03:13   squeaking sounds yeah you don't seem [TS]

00:03:15   like you have things I well it's funny [TS]

00:03:18   you know isn't it true though that when [TS]

00:03:20   you when you read enough library books [TS]

00:03:24   about mental health that it turns out [TS]

00:03:28   that anxiety manifests itself as all [TS]

00:03:31   other disorders [TS]

00:03:34   there's a little its yet I this is it [TS]

00:03:36   i'm not a clinician as you know [TS]

00:03:38   no well but if you're right you do great [TS]

00:03:40   nails don't think you do the best you [TS]

00:03:42   can do a little flag you know I'll do [TS]

00:03:44   you know Charlie Daniels Band your [TS]

00:03:46   french nails are some of the best thank [TS]

00:03:48   you 10 people say they're not classy but [TS]

00:03:50   I think French the French tip is a nice [TS]

00:03:52   tip that's a nice tip and you know uh I [TS]

00:03:55   think you know I feel like there's a lot [TS]

00:03:57   of things were you know the laypersons [TS]

00:04:00   idea of mental health comes kind of [TS]

00:04:03   falls down in these areas that are [TS]

00:04:05   little unsubtle and so you may not see [TS]

00:04:07   for example that there's anxiety and [TS]

00:04:09   depression in so many different things [TS]

00:04:11   and in fact there's anxiety and [TS]

00:04:13   depression and there's depression [TS]

00:04:14   anxiety which seemed mutual exclusive [TS]

00:04:17   unless you've lived it [TS]

00:04:19   yeah and they're they're both really [TS]

00:04:20   right there mm you know they they work [TS]

00:04:23   real nice their kind of salt and pepper [TS]

00:04:25   of small mental illness [TS]

00:04:27   uh-huh oh I love that salt and pepper [TS]

00:04:32   record shoot shoot they do i'm so sad [TS]

00:04:36   and my lifestyle flaming wreck [TS]

00:04:39   dooby-doo that's a really good song that [TS]

00:04:41   song came out making 93 it's still [TS]

00:04:43   really good [TS]

00:04:44   there are so many good that salt and [TS]

00:04:46   pepper record their date that's where [TS]

00:04:48   they took control you know spinderella [TS]

00:04:50   is no slouch [TS]

00:04:51   hmm but they had they had been i think [TS]

00:04:55   they had a little bit i don't know a lot [TS]

00:04:57   about this but I think they have a lot [TS]

00:04:58   little bit of a situation with their you [TS]

00:05:01   know every band has their that person [TS]

00:05:03   that God let's talk about left eye lopes [TS]

00:05:06   well she's so crazy [TS]

00:05:07   sdlc the right oh yeah right that's what [TS]

00:05:10   I get confused no no I can confused all [TS]

00:05:11   the time [TS]

00:05:12   TLC chase did they take counsel not to [TS]

00:05:14   chase a waterfall [TS]

00:05:15   that's right but but some pepper you you [TS]

00:05:17   were saying that they had AI think they [TS]

00:05:19   had they had a they had a marie wilson [TS]

00:05:21   type they had a handler [TS]

00:05:23   oh IC and I think that's the [TS]

00:05:25   transitional record where the one lady [TS]

00:05:28   was like look i can write really good [TS]

00:05:30   songs you know and work on the [TS]

00:05:32   production and that was kind i think [TS]

00:05:33   Shoop was co-authored with their marie [TS]

00:05:37   wilson and then and then they went on [TS]

00:05:40   the road without that's a strong record [TS]

00:05:41   and for its time I I mean that's always [TS]

00:05:44   such faint praise but you know that was [TS]

00:05:46   that was kind of a pretty wild like you [TS]

00:05:48   know these are sexually empowered ladies [TS]

00:05:49   like doing a really legitimate you know [TS]

00:05:51   hip-hop song and it was like I was like [TS]

00:05:54   a top x song top x I don't see I'm [TS]

00:05:57   trying to look at wikipedia but i'm [TS]

00:05:59   pretty sure it did well I'm sure to I [TS]

00:06:01   think it might have been number one [TS]

00:06:02   you're talking about number one hit [TS]

00:06:04   well something like that shoot you know [TS]

00:06:07   this was that that was precisely the air [TS]

00:06:09   when I was not I was not a I'm not able [TS]

00:06:12   to comment on popular culture between 91 [TS]

00:06:17   in 94 with with any kind of reliability [TS]

00:06:20   because those were the top years that I [TS]

00:06:23   was not what I was disconnected out [TS]

00:06:25   really thats I'd like to explore that i [TS]

00:06:27   would also like to say publicly to [TS]

00:06:29   apologize that you know you know me [TS]

00:06:31   right [TS]

00:06:32   you know I is still because of my own [TS]

00:06:36   personal interests and time and focus i [TS]

00:06:38   still think of 1989 as being kind of [TS]

00:06:41   like the apotheosis of hip-hop move the [TS]

00:06:43   dude of you haven't talked about this [TS]

00:06:45   but you know what I i guess when I say [TS]

00:06:47   that on the one hand i'm forgetting how [TS]

00:06:49   much stuff was that I thought I was [TS]

00:06:52   aware of was really good circuit 93-94 [TS]

00:06:55   and now in retrospect going back and [TS]

00:06:57   listening to more I can't believe how [TS]

00:06:58   much I missed because I was one of those [TS]

00:07:00   people who was like [TS]

00:07:01   you know the gangster the dark stuff the [TS]

00:07:04   gang stuff the East Coast West Coast all [TS]

00:07:06   that stuff really put me off i was not a [TS]

00:07:08   huge I didn't a time like a biggie but [TS]

00:07:11   like I'm back and I've been listening to [TS]

00:07:12   so much stuff from like 93 94 in [TS]

00:07:15   particular and it's fantastic and I feel [TS]

00:07:17   like a doofus for how much I missed [TS]

00:07:18   there's a guy there is a guy follow on [TS]

00:07:21   twitter [TS]

00:07:21   whoo-hoo really really will take on all [TS]

00:07:25   comers if anybody tries to step to him [TS]

00:07:28   by saying that there's a better rapper [TS]

00:07:31   than Vicki and I I'm learning that is a [TS]

00:07:34   commonly held belief [TS]

00:07:35   yeah and uh hilo watching his thread [TS]

00:07:38   unfold as you know various people will [TS]

00:07:42   say but but but what about and he just [TS]

00:07:46   destroys them with with biggie defense [TS]

00:07:52   big biggie because its empirical yeah [TS]

00:07:56   i'm not familiar with the with with a [TS]

00:08:00   lot of those catalogs because it all [TS]

00:08:03   took place [TS]

00:08:05   I mean I'm much more familiar with with [TS]

00:08:07   the hip-hop of the last 10 years then I [TS]

00:08:09   was at that central because you know i [TS]

00:08:11   think i was still caught in in like I [TS]

00:08:17   went I went down that tribe called quest [TS]

00:08:21   corridor right during that period which [TS]

00:08:24   fields which in some ways feels like the [TS]

00:08:26   last chapter of that story in some ways [TS]

00:08:29   yeah at it does it feels like a like a [TS]

00:08:33   hip-hop was getting really smart really [TS]

00:08:35   conscious it's and more and more [TS]

00:08:37   ambitious like introducing jazz and [TS]

00:08:39   stuff like that it really felt like wow [TS]

00:08:40   this is going to get can get more [TS]

00:08:42   interesting than this and while at the [TS]

00:08:44   same time about the same time you gotta [TS]

00:08:46   see hammer you got no ice [TS]

00:08:47   eventually a crisscross you get you know [TS]

00:08:49   how to paint and stuff like that we're [TS]

00:08:51   like in my mind I was kinda like [TS]

00:08:52   shutting down gonna go well this is jump [TS]

00:08:54   the shark at this point like Biz Markie [TS]

00:08:56   I mean there was a lot of there's a lot [TS]

00:08:59   to related it splintered let's say huh [TS]

00:09:02   then what survived it was not what I [TS]

00:09:05   would have expected was gonna survive it [TS]

00:09:08   right i mean the all the stuff that [TS]

00:09:10   seems like really cool and [TS]

00:09:13   and and intellectual I guess I mean that [TS]

00:09:19   when Atlanta what Atlanta rose to the [TS]

00:09:22   top was the was when I kind of felt like [TS]

00:09:25   what is what why of all the things of [TS]

00:09:28   all the directions that hip-hop could [TS]

00:09:30   explore wise atlanta leading the charge [TS]

00:09:33   and I said I I felt that way because i [TS]

00:09:35   was a Pacific Northwest booster and the [TS]

00:09:39   hip-hop here was always smarter and [TS]

00:09:41   maybe a little bit less hook driven but [TS]

00:09:45   also liked the stuff that was getting a [TS]

00:09:46   lot of airplay was and i'm probably [TS]

00:09:48   conflating my dates here but it was more [TS]

00:09:50   like what became of the dirty south kind [TS]

00:09:52   of stuff which and on for me but but you [TS]

00:09:54   go back and listen listen to like late [TS]

00:09:56   nineties outcast and its really good [TS]

00:09:59   sure I mean like I Phi was not aware of [TS]

00:10:01   that but I'm not back in like even the [TS]

00:10:03   last week especially I've been listening [TS]

00:10:04   to what I have to [TS]

00:10:06   you're gonna hate me for this but like [TS]

00:10:07   being into Hamilton you can go in kind [TS]

00:10:10   of 10 here's the thing is you know what [TS]

00:10:13   I should have a list of anxiety sounds [TS]

00:10:14   that i make only what will start talking [TS]

00:10:17   about Hamill yeah this is not a bit but [TS]

00:10:20   i always say is that he is very generous [TS]

00:10:21   about saying you know for example like [TS]

00:10:24   you know this song like which one like [TS]

00:10:29   satisfied [TS]

00:10:30   uh it's very very similar in some ways [TS]

00:10:33   that's very helpless is very similar to [TS]

00:10:35   clockwise by Beyonce a song that i [TS]

00:10:38   totally passed me by I go back and [TS]

00:10:40   listen clockwise I'm like this long [TS]

00:10:41   fucking great [TS]

00:10:42   this is a really great song like a huge [TS]

00:10:44   influence this song by Mobb Deep called [TS]

00:10:46   this shook ones part 2 so freaking good [TS]

00:10:51   now i'm going back and I listen to like [TS]

00:10:53   illmatic a long time ago I finally went [TS]

00:10:56   back and listened illmatic all the way [TS]

00:10:57   through and it's fucking genius so or [TS]

00:11:00   like now you know there's a time when I [TS]

00:11:01   was really into tang clan and the [TS]

00:11:03   offshoot albums they had a pretty good [TS]

00:11:05   like pretty good like two years of like [TS]

00:11:08   solo stuff and wu-tang stuff and it is [TS]

00:11:10   really it is really special and I want [TS]

00:11:13   to eat my words and say I was I was dead [TS]

00:11:15   wrong [TS]

00:11:16   it got different if not just better it [TS]

00:11:19   definitely more sophisticated but the [TS]

00:11:21   flow became more important you know the [TS]

00:11:23   flow as we come [TS]

00:11:24   I know how important flows it always was [TS]

00:11:30   and so 91 we start with you any of this [TS]

00:11:35   stuff that your clothes and well you [TS]

00:11:37   know the heavy flow i would I you know I [TS]

00:11:40   think that's actually what I well how I [TS]

00:11:42   think of you [TS]

00:11:43   well you don't need a medic mid 90s [TS]

00:11:44   hip-hop is a lot like any kind of humor [TS]

00:11:46   where a woman i thought i did not I did [TS]

00:11:48   not mean that to go back into the 9700 [TS]

00:11:51   I'm gonna say is that you can dissect it [TS]

00:11:54   and say why this is more successful than [TS]

00:11:57   that and you can talk about nozzles [TS]

00:11:59   internal rhyme schemes but it doesn't [TS]

00:12:00   really get at the thing it's like you [TS]

00:12:02   know it's like trying to say like why [TS]

00:12:03   this money python bit is funnier than [TS]

00:12:05   that one but that's always going to say [TS]

00:12:07   about you just described described [TS]

00:12:09   months and months of my life I was not I [TS]

00:12:11   believe me I thought about it but 91 294 [TS]

00:12:14   you were still doing your thing then huh [TS]

00:12:17   yeah well yeah and also completely [TS]

00:12:21   unplugged from I'm gonna have people ask [TS]

00:12:27   him how it is that i can i can claim [TS]

00:12:32   that I don't consume media intentional [TS]

00:12:36   not ask that and yet also have you know [TS]

00:12:40   passing knowledge or i can at least keep [TS]

00:12:42   in the game of a conversation about [TS]

00:12:44   anything i can tell you a song comes on [TS]

00:12:46   the radio I can identify it and say who [TS]

00:12:48   it is and I can't explain that exactly [TS]

00:12:51   either you know like I haven't bought on [TS]

00:12:54   a record album in a long long time and [TS]

00:13:00   and even then it was you know I bought a [TS]

00:13:02   record album once like a i can count on [TS]

00:13:06   a couple of hands the number of albums i [TS]

00:13:07   bought since I was out of high school [TS]

00:13:11   really but yeah I mean but what if I [TS]

00:13:15   bought 15 albums maybe I mean the never [TS]

00:13:20   talk about the the day out [TS]

00:13:23   ok computer came out the day ok computer [TS]

00:13:26   no I don't know about that day I think [TS]

00:13:27   there's any year that didn't happen but [TS]

00:13:29   that did that it didn't happen it was [TS]

00:13:30   the only thing that happened [TS]

00:13:31   actually hear about the typo i was [TS]

00:13:35   sitting at my I was sitting at my in my [TS]

00:13:37   store my little uh magazine store and I [TS]

00:13:42   I love to read the british pop magazines [TS]

00:13:46   q and mojo and enemy and stuff like that [TS]

00:13:49   so I was sitting on my counter at work [TS]

00:13:52   you know ringing ringing up people's [TS]

00:13:53   newspapers and reading probably q and [TS]

00:13:59   here's an article about Radiohead in the [TS]

00:14:00   studio and they're in there and they're [TS]

00:14:03   working on their new record they've been [TS]

00:14:04   working on it for a long time and it's [TS]

00:14:06   getting ready to come out and i'm [TS]

00:14:08   reading this article and I'm like this [TS]

00:14:09   is really interesting like you know but [TS]

00:14:12   I don't know this band but but i really [TS]

00:14:14   liked this article and it got to the end [TS]

00:14:19   and you know we always got the british [TS]

00:14:21   pop magazines on a little bit of a delay [TS]

00:14:23   because they had to come in the post and [TS]

00:14:27   it gets to the end of the article and it [TS]

00:14:29   says you know the records coming out [TS]

00:14:30   April whatever and i'm like 'that's [TS]

00:14:33   today and so I picked up the phone how [TS]

00:14:37   right i do instead somebody bring it to [TS]

00:14:39   you [TS]

00:14:40   yeah Ryan to write you remember this [TS]

00:14:42   called the record store day at the end [TS]

00:14:44   of the at the end of the neighborhoods [TS]

00:14:45   like this [TS]

00:14:46   Radiohead and he was like it just came [TS]

00:14:48   out today it's incredible and I was like [TS]

00:14:50   why I don't you know i don't get off [TS]

00:14:53   until 11 and I know your store closes at [TS]

00:14:55   nine is there anyway we can wear and he [TS]

00:14:59   was like out bring it to you right and [TS]

00:15:02   and I was so like every once in a while [TS]

00:15:05   something like that will happen where it [TS]

00:15:07   sounds like I'm a massive fan of things [TS]

00:15:12   and like I had a guy bring me the record [TS]

00:15:15   before the store closed but no that was [TS]

00:15:18   just the one time that ever happened but [TS]

00:15:20   it just so happened that it was ok [TS]

00:15:22   computer and you know and that was [TS]

00:15:25   obviously a record that was on it that [TS]

00:15:28   was on heavy rotation only rotation [TS]

00:15:32   maybe but so anyway during that period [TS]

00:15:34   the early nineties right I was consuming [TS]

00:15:36   a ton of stuff because i was living in [TS]

00:15:39   seattle and surrounded by culture [TS]

00:15:42   that was happening a certain culture but [TS]

00:15:45   as far as what was on TV at that time or [TS]

00:15:49   what the what the contemporary fashion [TS]

00:15:52   was maybe or what any kind of music that [TS]

00:15:55   was happening outside of my outside of [TS]

00:15:57   the world that of happenstance and I [TS]

00:16:00   guess that's what it is but it's a it's [TS]

00:16:02   a happenstance thing we are we were on [TS]

00:16:05   tour one time and Sean was DJing and the [TS]

00:16:09   DJ game you know we're driving into the [TS]

00:16:11   night we're the only two that are awake [TS]

00:16:13   and he started he started asking me like [TS]

00:16:16   what band is this what song is this and [TS]

00:16:19   I could and I could tell him and so the [TS]

00:16:22   DJ game became can Shawn play a song [TS]

00:16:25   that I don't that I can't tell him what [TS]

00:16:27   band is and we drove through the night [TS]

00:16:30   and somehow and i have no idea how I was [TS]

00:16:34   able to identify every band food and [TS]

00:16:36   Sean's really trust you know like [TS]

00:16:38   shooting out some obscure shit I [TS]

00:16:40   couldn't do that now [TS]

00:16:42   right but 2004 i could just be like yeah [TS]

00:16:46   I think that's probably you know just [TS]

00:16:50   sort of died it wasn't all very [TS]

00:16:53   confident but I could listen to it and [TS]

00:16:56   get the vibe of it and then pull down [TS]

00:16:59   out of my you know Terminator menu like [TS]

00:17:03   this is you know this has got to be [TS]

00:17:05   behead coats and I was just thinking [TS]

00:17:08   ahead [TS]

00:17:08   I mean how would you know like I'd I [TS]

00:17:11   cannot tell you how i would so it's a [TS]

00:17:14   it's I think it's a like it's a there's [TS]

00:17:17   a permeability to me that I here and [TS]

00:17:20   register stuff but but I don't [TS]

00:17:24   intentionally seek it out and I don't [TS]

00:17:26   sit around and consumers voluntarily [TS]

00:17:28   yeah and during that era I was just yeah [TS]

00:17:32   I was soaking in it [TS]

00:17:34   let's its I'm this is not totally [TS]

00:17:36   analogous but it might be a little bit [TS]

00:17:37   sports wear when i was a kid i was very [TS]

00:17:41   into following sports professional [TS]

00:17:44   sports especially baseball and most [TS]

00:17:46   especially the Reds you know and just [TS]

00:17:48   the National League in general and so [TS]

00:17:50   far you know for a couple three years i [TS]

00:17:52   would seek that out in addition to it [TS]

00:17:54   being [TS]

00:17:55   just a huge part of my environment [TS]

00:17:56   living in Cincinnati but i mean i would [TS]

00:17:58   look at the sports page i need the box [TS]

00:18:00   scores i know who is out by two and a [TS]

00:18:01   half games and stuff like that I knew [TS]

00:18:03   who's batting averages were what that's [TS]

00:18:04   here with the thing is you think about [TS]

00:18:06   think about baseball think about the ND [TS]

00:18:08   think about any of those things you have [TS]

00:18:10   so much more attention for that stuff [TS]

00:18:11   when you're younger so back then yes I [TS]

00:18:14   did seek that out and I collect baseball [TS]

00:18:15   cards etc etc all the things of the kid [TS]

00:18:17   does but arm announced but now today I [TS]

00:18:20   don't follow sports [TS]

00:18:22   yeah but you can keep it moving in the [TS]

00:18:24   Congo but it's it's everywhere so you [TS]

00:18:27   kind of you know you kind of have to [TS]

00:18:29   know at least a little bit about sports [TS]

00:18:30   in order to be a man in America like you [TS]

00:18:32   can't just get you considered I think [TS]

00:18:34   it's considered somewhat confrontational [TS]

00:18:37   to go into a discussion going to talk [TS]

00:18:38   about sports [TS]

00:18:39   I don't even like boards well yeah I [TS]

00:18:41   mean like it obviously that's a certain [TS]

00:18:43   kind of like you know I don't even have [TS]

00:18:44   a tubular my now I know I don't even [TS]

00:18:46   know what he was something I need the TV [TS]

00:18:48   understand but I'm but I think that's [TS]

00:18:50   part of it and we know you're just [TS]

00:18:52   surrounded by it and it's it's what [TS]

00:18:54   other people are talking about and [TS]

00:18:56   you're just picking stuff up but you [TS]

00:18:57   know music also is different because [TS]

00:18:59   even though you may have heard the name [TS]

00:19:01   the head coats don't know how to [TS]

00:19:02   pronounce that the head coach many times [TS]

00:19:04   you may not [TS]

00:19:06   I mean how would you have known that [TS]

00:19:07   particular like oh this is brian [TS]

00:19:09   jonestown massacre like how would you [TS]

00:19:11   know that you know i don't know i don't [TS]

00:19:13   know let's um let's go let's go this [TS]

00:19:18   direction do you think Pete Rose should [TS]

00:19:20   be in the Hall of Fame I feel like Pete [TS]

00:19:24   Rose yes probably [TS]

00:19:26   and I feel like he should be under some [TS]

00:19:27   sort of conservatorship I'm not the word [TS]

00:19:29   is I think someone should be his power [TS]

00:19:31   of attorney and like should get him to [TS]

00:19:32   quit Donald trumping all the time being [TS]

00:19:34   such a dumbass but no I mean you know uh [TS]

00:19:37   I do I think that's I think that is a I [TS]

00:19:40   don't think about it a lot but you're [TS]

00:19:41   asking I think he is it is not a very [TS]

00:19:44   nice person he's not a very smart person [TS]

00:19:45   but he was legitimately great at what he [TS]

00:19:47   did and what he eventually did in the [TS]

00:19:49   late seventies early eighties shouldn't [TS]

00:19:51   have an effect on the way 20 years that [TS]

00:19:53   he was people right right giving praise [TS]

00:19:55   lawns Barry Bonds should be in the whole [TS]

00:19:58   thing I i'm home run hitter right yeah I [TS]

00:20:01   I don't know that's complicated [TS]

00:20:03   I Alex Rodriguez you like a murder not [TS]

00:20:05   like the guys is right [TS]

00:20:06   right now ya know why everybody but when [TS]

00:20:09   people have strong feelings with it was [TS]

00:20:11   here a doping scandal [TS]

00:20:12   well yes ok but i think is so Alex [TS]

00:20:14   Rodriguez was as was a seattle mariner [TS]

00:20:17   how to do the Yankees he will eventually [TS]

00:20:20   so he left he was a seattle mariner he [TS]

00:20:23   was a very popular player i mean in the [TS]

00:20:26   sense of his game but nobody really [TS]

00:20:29   liked him right everybody likes ken [TS]

00:20:31   griffey jr. here in Seattle it's ken [TS]

00:20:33   griffey jr. walks into a restaurant here [TS]

00:20:34   at everybody just falls on the floor it [TS]

00:20:39   was it was easily mariner giggling he [TS]

00:20:41   was a he was a mariner all through that [TS]

00:20:44   he was the one he was the young guy that [TS]

00:20:46   like brought the Mariners to Nationals [TS]

00:20:48   you know his dad from the Rebs right [TS]

00:20:50   right and he was just this charming kid [TS]

00:20:52   that could hit the ball out of the park [TS]

00:20:53   and everybody loved him and you know the [TS]

00:20:56   stadium that we built here we certain [TS]

00:21:00   people will call it the house that [TS]

00:21:02   Griffey built I would never call it ok i [TS]

00:21:05   would say it wasn't how you think about [TS]

00:21:06   things [TS]

00:21:07   it was the house that got built after [TS]

00:21:08   three different three different citywide [TS]

00:21:12   boats each vote Tony against the steps [TS]

00:21:15   are different on the shirt but um but uh [TS]

00:21:18   but so Rodriguez he was a great player [TS]

00:21:21   but but that was the intro era tu and I [TS]

00:21:24   mean it there were a lot of people to [TS]

00:21:25   like and he was not one of them and then [TS]

00:21:27   he signed the richest deal in the [TS]

00:21:30   history of baseball 250 million dollars [TS]

00:21:33   or something to place in texas rangers [TS]

00:21:35   and then he traded to the yankees and I [TS]

00:21:39   think the Rangers have to keep paying [TS]

00:21:41   him somehow that so he gets paid by the [TS]

00:21:45   AE ideal like that you should get that [TS]

00:21:47   kind of deal i should have won the last [TS]

00:21:49   25 years shit doc shit dog but anyway so [TS]

00:21:53   Rodriguez like he's happy place on the [TS]

00:21:55   yankees one of the all-time I think is [TS]

00:21:57   the number for home run hitter in [TS]

00:21:59   history [TS]

00:22:00   barry bonds of course the great Barry [TS]

00:22:03   Bonds being number one a deeply [TS]

00:22:05   unlikable character you were here in San [TS]

00:22:08   Francisco during his reign right yeah [TS]

00:22:09   yeah yeah I mean it's funny he just he [TS]

00:22:13   just radiates unpleasantness [TS]

00:22:15   yeah yeah he doesn't seem likely see ken [TS]

00:22:18   griffey jr. and it's like yeah just [TS]

00:22:20   no he seems like he would talk to a kid [TS]

00:22:21   but Barry Bonds part also the earring [TS]

00:22:24   and only theory [TS]

00:22:24   yeah yeah yeahs get ken griffey jr. I [TS]

00:22:26   mean what ken griffey jr. bought a house [TS]

00:22:29   in Florida and I don't this is a long [TS]

00:22:32   time ago I don't care about baseball or [TS]

00:22:35   any of that but when he bought a house [TS]

00:22:36   in Florida I felt a little bit betrayed [TS]

00:22:38   like Ken what are you doing why you [TS]

00:22:41   buying a house in Florida man your [TS]

00:22:43   seattle guy and then when he traded oh I [TS]

00:22:46   was any I think he went to his dad's [TS]

00:22:48   team right there was some reason hmmm [TS]

00:22:51   but I felt like we didn't mean it's a [TS]

00:22:53   little bit at the same way with a churro [TS]

00:22:55   went it was like what you guys are [TS]

00:22:56   Seattle Seattle where you going where [TS]

00:22:59   you going man but we don't talk about [TS]

00:23:01   that i think i think that the players [TS]

00:23:02   moving other places is a super [TS]

00:23:04   interesting phenomena Yeah a like hair [TS]

00:23:07   like you know every game you go to every [TS]

00:23:09   game you see so many people had a for [TS]

00:23:12   the Giants in last year's had like a Tim [TS]

00:23:14   Lincecum Jersey you know like you know [TS]

00:23:18   as there's these characters who become [TS]

00:23:20   so synonymous with the team and it's why [TS]

00:23:22   people go to the games i had at one [TS]

00:23:24   point I had a Jason Giambi days blouse [TS]

00:23:30   and it's funny because like that he's [TS]

00:23:32   not much was that more a housecoat and [TS]

00:23:35   generally house could really i misused [TS]

00:23:37   the word should we use all the time like [TS]

00:23:39   else if something sells ago like it fell [TS]

00:23:42   together like a like a wine i know you [TS]

00:23:45   really should ease luxury is ashish [TS]

00:23:48   model but yeah like that's a beautiful [TS]

00:23:52   chemise and the person I'm complimenting [TS]

00:23:55   will go huh [TS]

00:23:56   no this is a chemise know that's like [TS]

00:24:00   pingas it's a good word but it is funny [TS]

00:24:02   because like you know it's it's such a [TS]

00:24:04   complicated not of feelings and brand [TS]

00:24:07   and business there in 44 everybody I [TS]

00:24:10   mean for the team for the player for the [TS]

00:24:12   people like you understand I'm again [TS]

00:24:14   just to be clear I'm not trying to be [TS]

00:24:15   cynical about this [TS]

00:24:16   I've had those feelings i bought those [TS]

00:24:17   products like I feel that bond [TS]

00:24:19   I mean I have you know Marvel character [TS]

00:24:22   sitting around here my my office [TS]

00:24:24   it's just that it's funny though when [TS]

00:24:25   somebody does leave them people just [TS]

00:24:26   people are so sad they're so crestfallen [TS]

00:24:28   and now like that that Lincecum jersey I [TS]

00:24:31   mean like what you gonna do with that [TS]

00:24:32   you can [TS]

00:24:32   wear that around yeah what you got to do [TS]

00:24:34   with that ya can't wear that around can [TS]

00:24:36   wear that around [TS]

00:24:37   well I mean I people people do I see I [TS]

00:24:40   people at baseball games i mean the the [TS]

00:24:42   sheer amount of mariners merchandise [TS]

00:24:45   not to mention like Yankees merchandise [TS]

00:24:49   I mean they're the the number of yankees [TS]

00:24:51   baseball caps in the world has got to [TS]

00:24:53   exceed the number of domesticated cats [TS]

00:24:57   in the world like this time more yankees [TS]

00:24:59   hats and people Empire is 1.1 yankees [TS]

00:25:03   hats per person [TS]

00:25:04   it's like cellphones in south korea 41.1 [TS]

00:25:07   some like 1.1 1.2 cell phones per person [TS]

00:25:10   in south korea so right [TS]

00:25:12   they have their beyond one hundred [TS]

00:25:13   percent saturation but well haven't you [TS]

00:25:17   been hundreds in saturated never had [TS]

00:25:19   that I happens to me all the time you [TS]

00:25:21   know I often do this program in the back [TS]

00:25:23   i I really felt strongly about it 0 and [TS]

00:25:32   it was because he just had a grace as [TS]

00:25:36   kind of personal grace and the fact that [TS]

00:25:39   he spoke English but insisted on doing [TS]

00:25:41   all these interviews through a [TS]

00:25:43   translator the way he the way he walked [TS]

00:25:46   out on the field his little quirks you [TS]

00:25:48   know he was a tall man he was not a [TS]

00:25:50   small guy huh his peers just reliable [TS]

00:25:54   and there's a lot of criticism of him [TS]

00:25:56   for the way he sort of appeared at least [TS]

00:26:00   to be batting for himself and his own [TS]

00:26:03   legacy rather than for the team i guess [TS]

00:26:08   but III can't [TS]

00:26:09   that just seems like weird sports talk [TS]

00:26:10   that seems like sports radio talk and I [TS]

00:26:13   often wondered why he singled so much [TS]

00:26:16   when he clearly could have knocked that [TS]

00:26:18   ball out of the park also like you know [TS]

00:26:21   he could have he could have tried to be [TS]

00:26:23   a hero like a like a Alex Rodriguez type [TS]

00:26:27   where it's just like Grand Slam [TS]

00:26:29   uh-huh but he just was this workman like [TS]

00:26:32   plumped the ball into the field [TS]

00:26:36   somewhere where nobody can catch it we [TS]

00:26:37   call it a small small small ball move [TS]

00:26:40   the move the the runners forward [TS]

00:26:43   but I really admired it and I just liked [TS]

00:26:46   everything about him I just like his [TS]

00:26:47   physicality it's one of those things [TS]

00:26:49   where I mean I don't are you watching [TS]

00:26:51   the olympics one of the problems for me [TS]

00:26:53   of watching the olympics is that I cry [TS]

00:26:56   every time really doesn't thing [TS]

00:27:00   interesting i heard the swimming lady [TS]

00:27:02   did really well I saw an infographic of [TS]

00:27:04   swimming and it looked very amazing [TS]

00:27:07   she's extraordinary athlete but like the [TS]

00:27:11   the way that they televise the Olympics [TS]

00:27:13   the the the commentators are are so off [TS]

00:27:18   like I mean really invasive ring but [TS]

00:27:21   yeah I was a large community that was [TS]

00:27:22   watching them yesterday and a [TS]

00:27:24   commentator actually said well you know [TS]

00:27:27   do you think she can pull it off and the [TS]

00:27:30   other person said well I think she can [TS]

00:27:33   pull it off [TS]

00:27:34   the question is will she wow that's a [TS]

00:27:36   really good point so it's actually [TS]

00:27:38   Campbell will she [TS]

00:27:39   yeah and I was just like wow you know I [TS]

00:27:43   can do I could do that job [TS]

00:27:45   yeah but is it really this game is going [TS]

00:27:47   to come down to whoever puts more points [TS]

00:27:48   on the board the events right that's [TS]

00:27:50   right who I mean who's got hard [TS]

00:27:52   oh and the other thing is these guys [TS]

00:27:53   came to play ball but they really the [TS]

00:27:56   the Olympics the way we televise them at [TS]

00:27:58   least he doesn't like a bit there's a [TS]

00:28:00   story there like I what I call file card [TS]

00:28:02   you get a file card always mom drove him [TS]

00:28:04   to pull every morning at 2am that cancer [TS]

00:28:06   or the or the lately they're doing this [TS]

00:28:08   thing that I've never seen in past [TS]

00:28:10   olympics weather like this person has [TS]

00:28:13   been is a five-time olympian who's never [TS]

00:28:16   wanna metal all cinderella stories and I [TS]

00:28:19   guess yeah you're just like wow we've [TS]

00:28:21   been to the Olympics five times I've [TS]

00:28:23   never won a medal luge on their do well [TS]

00:28:26   and it just feels like okay you are one [TS]

00:28:28   of the greatest athletes of our time [TS]

00:28:31   because you've been to the Olympics not [TS]

00:28:33   just once [TS]

00:28:34   five times huh and yet she like Oh [TS]

00:28:39   championship eludes you [TS]

00:28:42   how must that feel I mean to be the [TS]

00:28:44   greatest athlete like there there's a [TS]

00:28:46   diver a competitive diver from China a [TS]

00:28:49   woman who's been to the Olympics five [TS]

00:28:51   times and has more [TS]

00:28:52   gold medals than anyone in the history [TS]

00:28:53   of diving and you just watch your diving [TS]

00:28:55   you're like wow that's that's [TS]

00:28:58   exceptional you know or watch the US [TS]

00:29:00   gymnastics team you just like I don't [TS]

00:29:03   even understand what's happening [TS]

00:29:04   I couldn't describe that move if I had a [TS]

00:29:07   if you know if I had a powerpoint [TS]

00:29:08   demonstration right but to to be one of [TS]

00:29:12   the greatest athletes of your country [TS]

00:29:15   and of our time and have never won a [TS]

00:29:17   medal [TS]

00:29:17   yes i am now emotionally engaged in this [TS]

00:29:20   like I just wanted two different story [TS]

00:29:22   now it's also it's all it's a story [TS]

00:29:23   about overcoming and it's also announced [TS]

00:29:26   the aging but it's a story about getting [TS]

00:29:27   older [TS]

00:29:28   yeah there's no how many more chances [TS]

00:29:29   are they going to have there's a gymnast [TS]

00:29:31   from Uzbekistan just a 40-year old lady [TS]

00:29:33   was fucking 40 years old that's crazy [TS]

00:29:35   and she's out there competing with the [TS]

00:29:37   you know with 16 year olds yeah but I [TS]

00:29:40   don't even need any of that [TS]

00:29:43   contextualizing drama building American [TS]

00:29:48   television like let's make it you know [TS]

00:29:51   let's make everything MTV's the real [TS]

00:29:55   world impulse just watching sports [TS]

00:29:58   people performing at their highest level [TS]

00:30:03   i just will start to cry about any [TS]

00:30:07   competition where I see somebody be [TS]

00:30:12   performed beautifully because at that at [TS]

00:30:14   that level of sport the difference [TS]

00:30:16   between somebody who is one of the [TS]

00:30:19   greatest in the world and the greatest [TS]

00:30:21   in the world is so profound [TS]

00:30:23   yeah you know like this person ran that [TS]

00:30:25   race and they you know where within two [TS]

00:30:28   tenths of a second behind the leader but [TS]

00:30:31   the leader ran with this indescribable [TS]

00:30:34   ility that I that I have this emotional [TS]

00:30:38   response to and I don't know why and I [TS]

00:30:40   don't know how I can't control it and I [TS]

00:30:42   sit there I'm just like I'm I don't cry [TS]

00:30:46   I don't cry but if firm you know if I [TS]

00:30:50   saw somebody if I saw like well i think [TS]

00:30:53   i would probably cry if I saw something [TS]

00:30:54   bad [TS]

00:30:55   I'm not sure maybe i do crack I don't [TS]

00:30:57   typically cry in the course of a week or [TS]

00:31:00   month [TS]

00:31:01   four-year um I don't cry about things [TS]

00:31:04   that happened to me but watching [TS]

00:31:07   somebody do a race and and you know [TS]

00:31:14   thrill of victory agony of defeat [TS]

00:31:16   I just get so worked up and I and I so [TS]

00:31:19   best thing [TS]

00:31:20   ya feel that way about truly great [TS]

00:31:22   moments in sports of all kinds when [TS]

00:31:24   somebody does some baseball thing that [TS]

00:31:27   that just is that's captivatingly good [TS]

00:31:31   evenin a mundane game where some you [TS]

00:31:34   know where fielder just pulls off a [TS]

00:31:36   catch I'm just like oh and i'm not sure [TS]

00:31:39   if i'm not sure if sports fans are [TS]

00:31:41   experiencing those feelings too and [TS]

00:31:43   that's why sports is so popular with [TS]

00:31:44   people i find i find it almost a little [TS]

00:31:47   overwhelming [TS]

00:31:48   yeah yeah it's it's also my my my friend [TS]

00:31:53   John Gruber as put it this way i think [TS]

00:31:55   this is pretty smart you know there's [TS]

00:31:56   some people who are into baseball for [TS]

00:31:57   the numbers and some people who are into [TS]

00:31:59   baseball for the story and I thought [TS]

00:32:00   that was a really nice point the first [TS]

00:32:02   person to say that but I think that's [TS]

00:32:03   really smart and people who are into the [TS]

00:32:05   story are into this much longer arc of [TS]

00:32:08   like not just this inning [TS]

00:32:10   we're not just not not this at bat this [TS]

00:32:12   inning this game this are you know [TS]

00:32:16   double header or whatever this not even [TS]

00:32:19   the season is the grand Ark of the big [TS]

00:32:21   story about the Yankees yeah oh and I'm [TS]

00:32:23   looking I'm looking right now is funny [TS]

00:32:25   you should mention that at an article in [TS]

00:32:27   the new york post where is Jeter ranked [TS]

00:32:30   in the top 10 greatest Yankees nice well [TS]

00:32:34   except the writer says cheater isn't [TS]

00:32:39   even in the top 10 Yankees and then he [TS]

00:32:42   proceeds to talk about babe the babe the [TS]

00:32:48   babe and lou gehrig enjoy DiMaggio and [TS]

00:32:51   Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra boo and [TS]

00:32:53   you're just like there are a lot of big [TS]

00:32:55   Yankees there are a lot of top Yankees [TS]

00:32:57   where's Derek Jeter going to fall the [TS]

00:33:00   writer [TS]

00:33:01   wait so wait it is it written by Derek [TS]

00:33:03   Jeter no oh no it is writing as a is [TS]

00:33:07   writing it's being written in a way to [TS]

00:33:09   like brushback the kids brush [TS]

00:33:13   back ya hip-hop generation all these [TS]

00:33:16   kids today with the rock-and-roll they [TS]

00:33:18   don't know from Yankees yeah they're [TS]

00:33:19   millennia their millenniums you know [TS]

00:33:21   they're Derek Jeter up there it's like [TS]

00:33:23   you don't even have you ever even heard [TS]

00:33:25   of YT for you don't even you can't your [TS]

00:33:27   jeter is your whitey Ford fan that name [TS]

00:33:29   is less three albums not a fan Don [TS]

00:33:32   Mattingly please [TS]

00:33:34   and so yeah that arc of baseball the [TS]

00:33:38   level where where the Chicago White Sox [TS]

00:33:41   haven't won a game in two thousand years [TS]

00:33:45   yeah the Boston whalers haven't scored a [TS]

00:33:48   puck uh-huh [TS]

00:33:50   in the 54,000 hundreds called the curse [TS]

00:33:53   of the Gambino's and well yea rightfully [TS]

00:33:56   so I really became pecker there are more [TS]

00:33:59   there are more mobsters in Rhode Island [TS]

00:34:01   turns out and in New York City deadly as [TS]

00:34:05   a mobster be honest [TS]

00:34:06   Ted is to moral he's not a wartime [TS]

00:34:10   customary he's not at all [TS]

00:34:12   that's exactly right you know what my [TS]

00:34:14   father who's a better constantly area [TS]

00:34:15   than my father [TS]

00:34:16   that's right we're going to meet you [TS]

00:34:18   somewhere else Tom and the thing about a [TS]

00:34:21   thing about Ted is I think that Ted can [TS]

00:34:24   talk two monsters and their moms result [TS]

00:34:26   around 10 be waiting in the lobby [TS]

00:34:29   either it is like a you know he's like a [TS]

00:34:31   district to turn he's like Oh [TS]

00:34:33   straight-shooting this is straight [TS]

00:34:34   shooter yeah yeah who's Bruce brother is [TS]

00:34:38   a mouse [TS]

00:34:39   oh that looks like a like a showtime TV [TS]

00:34:41   show kind of thing [TS]

00:34:42   yeah I so with you just finish this one [TS]

00:34:46   bit yeah i think that you know if you're [TS]

00:34:48   someone like me who's a tourist like you [TS]

00:34:50   can come in and just in you know enjoy [TS]

00:34:52   game on its own terms but you know like [TS]

00:34:54   my family my gosh my in-laws they are [TS]

00:34:56   they're just they're screaming [TS]

00:34:58   obscenities the whole game they're all [TS]

00:34:59   they're mad about the calls and like [TS]

00:35:01   they're very very invested but I get [TS]

00:35:03   what you mean i'm going to just toss out [TS]

00:35:05   something I didn't I I used to be really [TS]

00:35:07   into the hitters like the big hitters [TS]

00:35:09   but hold this is probably just a sign [TS]

00:35:11   again and getting older I'm more and [TS]

00:35:13   more really appreciate pitching and [TS]

00:35:16   especially when you look at somebody [TS]

00:35:18   like our God is an amazing closer for [TS]

00:35:21   the Yankees a few years ago [TS]

00:35:22   oh I'm so embarrassed the you know that [TS]

00:35:26   one guy [TS]

00:35:26   but yeah the guy you know who I mean [TS]

00:35:29   yeah he's the latino guy whose name I [TS]

00:35:32   can't remember [TS]

00:35:33   yeah man and he's uh he's amazing and so [TS]

00:35:36   but like when you go in particular he [TS]

00:35:38   was pitching I think against the giants [TS]

00:35:40   a few years ago in the World Series and [TS]

00:35:42   just the coolness like The Incredible [TS]

00:35:43   composure that it takes to come in at [TS]

00:35:46   the end and and be able to keep it all [TS]

00:35:48   together from pitch to pitch and if you [TS]

00:35:50   fuck up bitch where you gotta not fuck [TS]

00:35:51   up the next one and like you know you [TS]

00:35:53   don't get to be a hero [TS]

00:35:54   you've got you've got to make you gotta [TS]

00:35:55   become a hero one pitch at a time and I [TS]

00:35:57   really or a goat but like it you're as [TS]

00:36:01   good as that game and oh wait i know it [TS]

00:36:04   rod Rodriguez has a name I look it up [TS]

00:36:08   thankies relief pitcher I i I'm saying [TS]

00:36:10   is I'm coming too much more appreciate [TS]

00:36:12   pitching and the composure and [TS]

00:36:15   athleticism and intelligence that it [TS]

00:36:17   takes to be a picture like to not get [TS]

00:36:18   stuck in your own head like it's just so [TS]

00:36:21   amazing to watch [TS]

00:36:22   well but again there's some indefinable [TS]

00:36:24   quality like Felix Hernandez for the [TS]

00:36:28   Mariners and Ariana Mariano Rivera [TS]

00:36:30   Mariano Rivera yeah something you know I [TS]

00:36:33   i followed the Mariners most closely [TS]

00:36:36   because it because it's part of our [TS]

00:36:38   culture here [TS]

00:36:39   well this is something you might not [TS]

00:36:41   know but your local team a lot of times [TS]

00:36:45   will generate more fandom among mode the [TS]

00:36:48   local population to get the whole to get [TS]

00:36:50   the national sport and there's different [TS]

00:36:52   teams that are there nominally located [TS]

00:36:56   around the country you're saying that [TS]

00:36:57   the town that the in your hometown that [TS]

00:36:59   team that franchise that business they [TS]

00:37:01   tend to accrue more attention and [TS]

00:37:03   affection typically among the local [TS]

00:37:05   population so now my my dad is was from [TS]

00:37:09   the Northwest he never lived in boss [TS]

00:37:12   then he didn't leave never we never [TS]

00:37:14   lived in Pakistan he grew up in Seattle [TS]

00:37:18   went to college in seattle and then [TS]

00:37:21   moved to Alaska so he so he had a very [TS]

00:37:25   geographical fandom it was like em it [TS]

00:37:30   was like Lyme disease right it was good [TS]

00:37:32   but it went in a in concentric circles [TS]

00:37:36   out from the initial wound and so he you [TS]

00:37:41   know his number one favorite thing was [TS]

00:37:44   Huskies the University of Washington [TS]

00:37:46   Huskies and I think that he I think in [TS]

00:37:50   the in the fifties and sixties he [TS]

00:37:53   followed Huskies basketball but as time [TS]

00:37:56   went on like the Huskies football became [TS]

00:37:57   you became the big thing but he like [TS]

00:38:00   college basketball and he would root for [TS]

00:38:02   the team in any because he would watch [TS]

00:38:04   any game any sports game he would root [TS]

00:38:08   for the team or person who originated [TS]

00:38:11   the closest to seattle so if they were [TS]

00:38:14   to get there were two tennis players and [TS]

00:38:16   one of them was from Baltimore and one [TS]

00:38:18   of them was from you know was from [TS]

00:38:21   Boston he would he would adjudicate in [TS]

00:38:25   his in his geographic understanding of [TS]

00:38:27   the country which was closest and i [TS]

00:38:30   would say it's pretty hard to you know [TS]

00:38:31   pretty hard to care [TS]

00:38:33   that's so arbitrary yeah he was just [TS]

00:38:35   like you know like he always rooted for [TS]

00:38:38   berkeley over UCLA like just that just [TS]

00:38:43   made sense to who [TS]

00:38:45   um but so Felix Hernandez is a big deal [TS]

00:38:48   here in seattle he's Abby's the you know [TS]

00:38:50   he's a picture that has his own fan [TS]

00:38:52   group in the stadium and he is a great [TS]

00:38:56   picture but I just this is I'm you know [TS]

00:38:59   this is one of those things I can [TS]

00:39:01   explain [TS]

00:39:01   I'm just not into Felix tremendous huh [TS]

00:39:04   he comes out and i appreciate his [TS]

00:39:05   performance i understand that he's a [TS]

00:39:07   great picture but like I don't feel an [TS]

00:39:09   emotional resonance with him sometimes a [TS]

00:39:11   pitcher walks out there and just like [TS]

00:39:13   this guy holy cat who I into this guy [TS]

00:39:16   and I don't know what it is it so it's [TS]

00:39:18   not just Flair it's just something I [TS]

00:39:22   just feel like Felix Hernandez is kind [TS]

00:39:24   of [TS]

00:39:25   big kid maybe I feel like maybe he's a [TS]

00:39:28   little bit of a bully in the dugout but [TS]

00:39:30   like not have not a bully like he's just [TS]

00:39:33   what he's always laughing but he's like [TS]

00:39:35   he's that you know he's like grabbing [TS]

00:39:39   the grabbing your underwear and pulling [TS]

00:39:40   it up [TS]

00:39:40   hmm so but that's that's where the weird [TS]

00:39:44   thing about sports [TS]

00:39:46   i I don't know how it is that i can tune [TS]

00:39:49   into curling at two o'clock in the [TS]

00:39:52   morning on a hotel room television and [TS]

00:39:55   about everything that's on TV at two [TS]

00:39:57   o'clock in the morning which is to say [TS]

00:39:58   nothing but i will prefer watching [TS]

00:40:01   curling to almost anything else if i can [TS]

00:40:06   find it on TV and I'll sit else in the [TS]

00:40:08   hotel room even if i have something due [TS]

00:40:10   the next day and i'll watch curling as [TS]

00:40:12   long as it's on the five o'clock in the [TS]

00:40:14   morning and i'll get really invested in [TS]

00:40:17   a curling match between prince edward [TS]

00:40:20   island and Saskatchewan and we'll just [TS]

00:40:26   be like really rooting in general i [TS]

00:40:30   think i would probably root for Prince [TS]

00:40:31   Edward Island and a but it would depend [TS]

00:40:35   it would depend on how whether i like [TS]

00:40:37   the captain or not the uniforms uniforms [TS]

00:40:40   but you know if curling were just [TS]

00:40:43   sweeping the way kids sweeps the [TS]

00:40:45   mcdonalds it wouldn't be as fun if the [TS]

00:40:47   intensity and focus of the sweeping that [TS]

00:40:49   makes it compelling a little music kappa [TS]

00:40:53   night but i find the sweeping aspect of [TS]

00:40:55   it you know because that's where there's [TS]

00:40:56   a lot of yelling you know a lot of [TS]

00:41:00   yelling to go with that sweeping is that [TS]

00:41:01   right yeah yell at each other they [TS]

00:41:03   yelling at the puck the stone they're [TS]

00:41:07   just yelling at the walls because [TS]

00:41:08   they're very excited and they're [TS]

00:41:11   sweeping is having get relative to the [TS]

00:41:14   amount of energy they're expanding its [TS]

00:41:16   having a very my new effect on the [TS]

00:41:17   corner trying to make a little path [TS]

00:41:19   right yeah a rough day rough up or [TS]

00:41:22   smooth up for doing something to a [TS]

00:41:23   certain area to make make the stone move [TS]

00:41:26   a certain way a curve the stone Turner [TS]

00:41:28   that the aspect the aspect that I like [TS]

00:41:30   is the throwing of the stone because [TS]

00:41:32   it's so focused and i understand it like [TS]

00:41:35   and you start to see that your whole [TS]

00:41:37   body slides with the stone [TS]

00:41:38   and then you just set it free it's like [TS]

00:41:41   fly be free stone and let the sweepers [TS]

00:41:45   sweep as they may but i have set you on [TS]

00:41:48   a course on a path through life are you [TS]

00:41:51   going around these other stones are here [TS]

00:41:53   and like parenting [TS]

00:41:54   that's right are you going to hit these [TS]

00:41:56   other stones head-on or you can move [TS]

00:41:57   around these somebody come up and coming [TS]

00:41:59   to combine clean up after you [TS]

00:42:01   yeah you're gonna run down and fuck one [TS]

00:42:02   of those cows are you gonna walk down [TS]

00:42:03   and fuck all those cows this episode of [TS]

00:42:07   Roderick on the line is brought to you [TS]

00:42:08   in part by braintree are you going to [TS]

00:43:51   an episode of the TV show girls i have [TS]

00:43:54   seen the TV show girls [TS]

00:43:55   yeah yeah I thought I thought it was [TS]

00:43:57   that was good i don't have strong [TS]

00:44:00   feelings I have friends who are very [TS]

00:44:02   very into it I i thought it seemed good [TS]

00:44:04   it's got kind of rain in it although it [TS]

00:44:06   does have kind of run [TS]

00:44:07   uh oh yes yes it does show you watching [TS]

00:44:09   enjoy [TS]

00:44:10   well i stumbledupon it was late at night [TS]

00:44:13   in a hotel room that's a great time i [TS]

00:44:15   have to say that is actually a great [TS]

00:44:17   time discovered TV shows you're so [TS]

00:44:18   predisposed to something that's not a [TS]

00:44:20   knife commercial yeah I i well so I [TS]

00:44:23   discovered band of brothers on hana [TS]

00:44:26   flight it was one of the hanging was one [TS]

00:44:29   of the early flights don't have to talk [TS]

00:44:30   about crying there's two things I [TS]

00:44:32   discovered on flights that true well [TS]

00:44:35   let's say three things well I discovered [TS]

00:44:36   delta airlines a trivia game with [TS]

00:44:40   consistent as European sports think i'm [TS]

00:44:43   so mad about frustrates you who is the [TS]

00:44:45   captain of the of the nineteen seventies [TS]

00:44:48   winning manchester united manchester [TS]

00:44:51   united nothing about Lester look you but [TS]

00:44:55   at another two TV shows i discovered the [TS]

00:44:58   two not not TV shows the do [TS]

00:45:00   entertainment i discovered on airplanes [TS]

00:45:01   are Band of Brothers which I had avoided [TS]

00:45:03   up until then because it felt like this [TS]

00:45:06   is just some saving private ryan [TS]

00:45:08   bullshit some steven spielberg produced [TS]

00:45:10   ya tom hanks involved like weird fake [TS]

00:45:15   war like high-definition war movie that [TS]

00:45:18   I and I didn't see saving private ryan [TS]

00:45:20   when it came out and my dad was still [TS]

00:45:21   alive and we should have gone to see it [TS]

00:45:23   together but I was like I don't want to [TS]

00:45:24   watch some steven spielberg war movie [TS]

00:45:27   hopefully you know that opens still [TS]

00:45:28   pretty rough [TS]

00:45:29   well and that's the things like when i [TS]

00:45:31   finally watched it I said was I so [TS]

00:45:34   afraid of this is just a great war movie [TS]

00:45:35   and I have watched them all war movies [TS]

00:45:38   but I'm on some flight and it was a long [TS]

00:45:40   flight it was like from Europe and for [TS]

00:45:43   whatever reason they had band of [TS]

00:45:45   brothers and I started it starts getting [TS]

00:45:47   no but I started soon enough i think i [TS]

00:45:50   think i started episode 2 [TS]

00:45:52   Johnny when you asked what a fucking [TS]

00:45:55   cast yet incredible and it was streaming [TS]

00:45:57   it was it was in order so i just spent [TS]

00:46:00   ten hours watching band of brothers and [TS]

00:46:02   it was it was like it was like the Civil [TS]

00:46:06   War documentary can first ken burns or I [TS]

00:46:09   guess what i think of as the first ken [TS]

00:46:10   burns which I could watch that once a [TS]

00:46:13   year for the rest of my life [TS]

00:46:14   what's the shit what's the name of the [TS]

00:46:16   battle in the weather stuck in the woods [TS]

00:46:17   with your daddy [TS]

00:46:20   yeah you know the one I mean yeah the [TS]

00:46:22   one in the woods [TS]

00:46:23   ah fuck what is wrong with us this week [TS]

00:46:25   well yeah thanks Tom those bolts the but [TS]

00:46:28   the bolt the yeah this is your damn [TS]

00:46:30   right is it but it's the one where [TS]

00:46:31   they're stuck in the woods outside the [TS]

00:46:32   village in the fuck and it's very [TS]

00:46:33   amusing bombs are just coming to just [TS]

00:46:35   and they're just picking them off and [TS]

00:46:36   like that is I think you know did the [TS]

00:46:38   ability to tell that story and to keep [TS]

00:46:41   drawing that out with so little relief I [TS]

00:46:44   i think it's masterful and it's late [TS]

00:46:46   it's like over at least one probably two [TS]

00:46:48   episodes at least and it's just it's so [TS]

00:46:50   relentless and so well done and I said [TS]

00:46:53   that cast [TS]

00:46:53   yeah I really good show you know what [TS]

00:46:55   the public that show if I'm at this guy [TS]

00:46:56   could be wrong but two things I remember [TS]

00:46:58   coming out around nine eleven is jay-z [TS]

00:47:00   record came out on 911 and there was our [TS]

00:47:03   band of brothers came out just a little [TS]

00:47:04   bit before nine eleven i think about and [TS]

00:47:06   I we kind of lost in the lights because [TS]

00:47:08   we at the time we were like it I really [TS]

00:47:11   that sensitive you know you feel back [TS]

00:47:13   then you know it's like I don't know i [TS]

00:47:15   don't think i'm gonna go watch you're [TS]

00:47:17   not gonna want to shoot him up [TS]

00:47:19   it is so good the guy from homeland is [TS]

00:47:22   so great on there [TS]

00:47:23   well and that this is one of those [TS]

00:47:24   problems of with actors right I cannot [TS]

00:47:28   watch him in anything else [TS]

00:47:29   DJ he just appeared in a new spy movie [TS]

00:47:32   as like the the sort of Q spymaster [TS]

00:47:36   character right in a damian lewis [TS]

00:47:39   someone say i guess i like it i watched [TS]

00:47:41   him in a spy movie just recently that [TS]

00:47:43   involved some you know escaping from [TS]

00:47:47   some baddies and he was the the another [TS]

00:47:51   fairly a [TS]

00:47:52   like a moral spymaster and andy and [TS]

00:47:58   using his actual British accent and I [TS]

00:48:00   just found the whole thing very false [TS]

00:48:01   because I because he is lieutenant [TS]

00:48:04   winters for me forever [TS]

00:48:06   yeah the other thing I discovered on a [TS]

00:48:08   delta or not Delta i'm not going to [TS]

00:48:10   advertise for Delta here it could have [TS]

00:48:11   been any airline yeah that had TVs in [TS]

00:48:14   the back of the seat was David Blaine [TS]

00:48:16   Street magic and hey I cannot tell you [TS]

00:48:25   how much that first episode that first [TS]

00:48:28   appearance of David Blaine Street magic [TS]

00:48:33   how much I was just like God show me [TS]

00:48:38   more of this street magic is real [TS]

00:48:41   who cares i know he is out there like [TS]

00:48:43   you know looking to shoot it happened [TS]

00:48:47   like I think of a card [TS]

00:48:49   ok six of diamonds what here call your [TS]

00:48:53   mom how did you wait a minute how did he [TS]

00:48:57   just full-on guess the card was the one [TS]

00:49:01   since the ones writing this has been [TS]

00:49:02   parody temp too much greater effect but [TS]

00:49:04   it is really true it's like there's it's [TS]

00:49:05   like you know you've seen that guy [TS]

00:49:07   Apollo what's-his-name the greatest [TS]

00:49:09   pickpocket in the world you know [TS]

00:49:11   yeah yeah he's great my daughter and I [TS]

00:49:12   just want to watch that video every [TS]

00:49:13   couple weeks and I still I still can I I [TS]

00:49:16   know how he does it and I still don't [TS]

00:49:18   see him do it but he's doing it I that I [TS]

00:49:21   believe I know there's some tricks in [TS]

00:49:22   that but that is all I think genuine [TS]

00:49:24   brilliant sleight-of-hand yeah but with [TS]

00:49:26   the but I think don't you think it's [TS]

00:49:28   probably more stagecraft with David [TS]

00:49:29   Blaine you don't care i think it's david [TS]

00:49:31   playing the guy is on a salad bar for [TS]

00:49:33   six years and he's the guy who does the [TS]

00:49:34   name the endurance things [TS]

00:49:35   yeah which I don't find very interesting [TS]

00:49:37   like he's increased in I alright top of [TS]

00:49:40   the bellagio for and it's just like you [TS]

00:49:42   all right you're starving yourself to [TS]

00:49:43   death that is amazing i guess from [TS]

00:49:45   within [TS]

00:49:46   it's pretty slow reveal but there are [TS]

00:49:48   those guys in India there's the one guy [TS]

00:49:50   in India who has had one [TS]

00:49:52   I'm raised for 15 years what the daily [TS]

00:49:56   said or 40 years or something like that [TS]

00:49:58   he's got one arm that he's just kept [TS]

00:50:00   raised and it has become completely [TS]

00:50:02   atrophied there's no muscle in the [TS]

00:50:05   armoire fat if the arm that he holds up [TS]

00:50:08   appears to just be his arm bone that's [TS]

00:50:10   commitment and he and he does it because [TS]

00:50:12   of that you know whatever that aesthetic [TS]

00:50:15   a tradition is there and you know where [TS]

00:50:18   you're just like I pound a nail into my [TS]

00:50:20   nose his decision [TS]

00:50:23   his thing was I'm gonna hold one arm up [TS]

00:50:25   in the air which if you've ever tried to [TS]

00:50:27   do it for a long period of time if [TS]

00:50:29   you've ever been in a lecture hall and [TS]

00:50:30   you're like who you're trying to cut [TS]

00:50:32   somebody's hair you know how hard it is [TS]

00:50:34   to keep your arms in the air for more [TS]

00:50:35   than a couple minutes is a lot harder [TS]

00:50:37   than it looks guys had is on one arm in [TS]

00:50:39   the air for decades this is one thing [TS]

00:50:40   that with the internets really good [TS]

00:50:42   because you have to guess at some point [TS]

00:50:43   somebody goes you know what I want to [TS]

00:50:45   dedicate my life to God show this vest [TS]

00:50:46   is an empty vessel without without our [TS]

00:50:48   god I'm gonna put my arm up in the air [TS]

00:50:50   and like a year in tuition because I you [TS]

00:50:51   know another guy's been doing that for [TS]

00:50:52   14 years already got fuck yeah sorry man [TS]

00:50:56   now what am I gonna do think of [TS]

00:50:58   something else left arm left arm but I [TS]

00:51:01   but so I'm not interested in David [TS]

00:51:03   Blaine's geegaws because what what [TS]

00:51:05   interests me most about magic is [TS]

00:51:07   close-up magic I don't want to see a big [TS]

00:51:09   show I don't want to I don't want to see [TS]

00:51:10   a lion disappear you know like all those [TS]

00:51:13   things at Penn & Teller do where teller [TS]

00:51:15   is walking around and some rubber ball [TS]

00:51:17   is following him across the stage like [TS]

00:51:19   it's not just all like legacy I I feel [TS]

00:51:22   like that is just that's just show you [TS]

00:51:24   like you like those clothes magic that [TS]

00:51:26   really feels magical because they you [TS]

00:51:28   know in those biggest shows they just [TS]

00:51:29   set up the lighting in such a way that [TS]

00:51:31   you can see the wires its own show its [TS]

00:51:33   tricks but like the Ricky J stuff for [TS]

00:51:36   your brother [TS]

00:51:37   you can see that where those cards get [TS]

00:51:39   rid of them they keep coming out of his [TS]

00:51:41   sleeve [TS]

00:51:41   butBut so David Blaine is doing the [TS]

00:51:44   thing that I always wanted to do and the [TS]

00:51:46   best part about David Blaine is that he [TS]

00:51:48   uses magic any and again he's a complete [TS]

00:51:51   cornball right like like they set it up [TS]

00:51:54   in such weather like where should we go [TS]

00:51:56   let's go to downtown st. Louis at one [TS]

00:52:00   o'clock in the morning [TS]

00:52:01   like the place that everyone is the most [TS]

00:52:05   scared to go and they want their walking [TS]

00:52:06   around with a TV camera with bright [TS]

00:52:09   lights on in East st. Louis and these [TS]

00:52:13   guys are kind of coming out of the [TS]

00:52:14   shadows and even the the neighborhood [TS]

00:52:16   guys are like are you crazy like this is [TS]

00:52:19   the place of all places that you don't [TS]

00:52:21   want to be why what are you doing and [TS]

00:52:23   the David Blaine's like launch come over [TS]

00:52:25   here and discarded as a manager [TS]

00:52:28   yea big card and the guys are like pick [TS]

00:52:31   a card [TS]

00:52:32   alright because it is this your gun yeah [TS]

00:52:34   this magic popping card picks a card [TS]

00:52:37   David like is it the four of clubs and [TS]

00:52:40   they're like wow I'm and it's that it's [TS]

00:52:43   that idea that magic you did you don't [TS]

00:52:46   need a common language you don't need ye [TS]

00:52:49   it pretty it's like a protective bubble [TS]

00:52:52   because your amazing people and and [TS]

00:52:56   you're doing it like you're not taking [TS]

00:52:57   their money it's not a game of dice [TS]

00:52:58   you're just like let me show you let me [TS]

00:53:01   show you something that's gonna blow [TS]

00:53:02   your mind and it any and it universally [TS]

00:53:05   blows people's minds anywhere and that [TS]

00:53:08   is such a great that's what I always [TS]

00:53:09   wanted to know it's like I wanted to [TS]

00:53:12   know magic and I wanted to play the [TS]

00:53:13   harmonica who because with what with [TS]

00:53:16   close-up magic and with the harmonic you [TS]

00:53:20   can go you can go anywhere right [TS]

00:53:24   oh you're kidding me there's nowhere in [TS]

00:53:26   the we're going to delight children all [TS]

00:53:27   over the world if you can play the [TS]

00:53:28   harmonica and do a card trick [TS]

00:53:30   there's nowhere in the world where you [TS]

00:53:31   can't go trains coming way and people [TS]

00:53:37   are like yeah yeah god like you're [TS]

00:53:41   welcome everywhere [TS]

00:53:42   yep strand if you can be like where's [TS]

00:53:44   the corner oh it was in your ear [TS]

00:53:46   what every kid in the world is on your [TS]

00:53:48   is on your side and then the [TS]

00:53:51   suspicious-looking grandparents who are [TS]

00:53:53   like what are you doing with the quarter [TS]

00:53:55   in the ear is this are you some kind of [TS]

00:53:56   pervert right and then you're like you [TS]

00:53:58   were thinking of the four of clubs and [TS]

00:54:00   then the grandparents say basically come [TS]

00:54:02   stay with us [TS]

00:54:03   that's the 1i love and a guy you don't [TS]

00:54:05   because in the ground but did again that [TS]

00:54:08   up i can remember the guys name Apollo [TS]

00:54:10   Apollo Creed Apollo Robbins the the [TS]

00:54:13   thing that he does [TS]

00:54:14   is he can get things out of your pocket [TS]

00:54:17   which is amazing and he's even gone in [TS]

00:54:19   like shown how he does this the [TS]

00:54:21   misdirection that he does he's here will [TS]

00:54:23   lightly brush this part of your body [TS]

00:54:25   where you don't even notice that he's [TS]

00:54:27   touched you there but now that's where [TS]

00:54:28   you're paying attention without even [TS]

00:54:29   realizing it [TS]

00:54:30   he can lift your wallet out of your [TS]

00:54:33   jacket inside pocket [TS]

00:54:36   hold it against you while he kept apps [TS]

00:54:38   on another area the wallet drops he [TS]

00:54:40   catches it puts it behind his back and [TS]

00:54:42   you see it and even though he explains [TS]

00:54:44   how he does it it's still magic within [TS]

00:54:46   the part that kills me when he goes okay [TS]

00:54:47   now look in your wallet [TS]

00:54:49   oh and then you're right what the fuck [TS]

00:54:50   how is their house their twenty-dollar [TS]

00:54:52   bill and a pen [TS]

00:54:53   wow what was it it's the driver's [TS]

00:54:55   license of your friend who was standing [TS]

00:54:58   there laughing like how could it's one [TS]

00:54:59   thing to say like okay like I put you [TS]

00:55:01   know Matt Lauer's pen you know in your [TS]

00:57:57   me go back [TS]

00:57:57   um well I listener has said that they [TS]

00:57:59   are are going out at great expense [TS]

00:58:01   obtaining a nineteen seventies orange [TS]

00:58:03   bell from the game pit in order to have [TS]

00:58:05   what you have been fucking task who good [TS]

00:58:21   em John a fraction we're going where we [TS]

00:58:24   are going we're going into the Hall of [TS]

00:58:27   Fame merchandising podcasts this year [TS]

00:58:30   2000 which everyone Giants its team [TS]

00:58:32   effort i'm just honored to be here and [TS]

00:58:34   really I want to just thank the Lord [TS]

00:58:35   yeah you're just you're just playing for [TS]

00:58:36   the team [TS]

00:58:37   here I Penn Jillette a couple years ago [TS]

00:58:41   decided that he was going to take on and [TS]

00:58:44   i think i think that the teller and he [TS]

00:58:49   probably don't like each other very much [TS]

00:58:51   they are very they have they talked [TS]

00:58:53   about this a lot they have a very [TS]

00:58:54   professional relationship they have [TS]

00:58:56   apparently turns out like zero contact [TS]

00:58:59   that is not about the act [TS]

00:59:02   yeah well and that was true also of [TS]

00:59:04   Mythbusters write those two guys didn't [TS]

00:59:07   is that right [TS]

00:59:08   I didn't see eye-to-eye they seem very [TS]

00:59:10   very different that the the guy who [TS]

00:59:12   looks like the doobie brother he seems [TS]

00:59:14   like he doesn't want to be there a lot [TS]

00:59:15   of the time you don't think it looks [TS]

00:59:16   like Jeff skunk baxter doesn't like Jeff [TS]

00:59:19   skunk baxter he does you're absolutely [TS]

00:59:21   right [TS]

00:59:21   he seems like a really smart guy but he [TS]

00:59:23   seems like he like everything like every [TS]

00:59:25   time he is reluctant to have to be on TV [TS]

00:59:27   show [TS]

00:59:28   yeah i think that is as far as i know [TS]

00:59:30   and i I'm not trying to reveal any trade [TS]

00:59:33   secrets here who as far as i know he [TS]

00:59:36   although was on a long-running [TS]

00:59:39   television show that made him both [TS]

00:59:41   famous and rich he was contemptuous of [TS]

00:59:45   all entertainment so like at least not [TS]

00:59:50   that that's a bad decision [TS]

00:59:52   yeah like a libertarian mmm who says we [TS]

00:59:56   made this or whatever like just let [TS]

00:59:59   capitalism running [TS]

00:59:59   capitalism running [TS]

01:00:00   of course whose job whose business [TS]

01:00:02   depends entirely on public roads which [TS]

01:00:06   are paid for by taxes please John call [TS]

01:00:08   um I i believe that be that Jeff skunk [TS]

01:00:11   baxter in the in the Mythbusters parent [TS]

01:00:14   would every single episode say a well [TS]

01:00:19   why do we have to you know why do we [TS]

01:00:20   have to dramatize this will just show [TS]

01:00:22   the science and people that's what [TS]

01:00:23   people tuned in for ya and it's like [TS]

01:00:25   well where it's an hour-long TV episode [TS]

01:00:27   or for half hour when he cut away to the [TS]

01:00:29   b-team yeah cut away the b-team or like [TS]

01:00:33   when something blows up act surprised [TS]

01:00:35   yeah or what it's not you know you're [TS]

01:00:36   not faking it is the thing is it is I've [TS]

01:00:39   you know I've only ever seen I I like [TS]

01:00:41   Adam a lot as a person he's 81 of the [TS]

01:00:44   good people I've seen maybe five [TS]

01:00:46   episodes of that show ever just cuz i [TS]

01:00:47   cant it's not this show it's not even [TS]

01:00:50   the people just can't tolerate the cable [TS]

01:00:51   TV nosov it of the like you know the [TS]

01:00:54   teasers and then it's just there's so [TS]

01:00:56   much television metadata and like [TS]

01:00:59   reminders and lower thirds and cutaways [TS]

01:01:02   Andy story and it's like Jesus Christ [TS]

01:01:04   there's like there's like four minutes [TS]

01:01:06   of stuff here [TS]

01:01:07   yeah well but that's the problem there [TS]

01:01:09   is four minutes of stuff if you made a [TS]

01:01:11   television show that long [TS]

01:01:12   it's where you basically like a [TS]

01:01:14   professional super professional youtube [TS]

01:01:15   video that you've got to find a way to [TS]

01:01:17   turn into like a whole TV show [TS]

01:01:18   yeah but if you if you were making a [TS]

01:01:21   half an hour long TV show or now I don't [TS]

01:01:23   know how long those things are but if [TS]

01:01:24   you were making that and it was all just [TS]

01:01:26   science [TS]

01:01:27   you would have to solve 15 mysteries per [TS]

01:01:30   episode because it's like how you know [TS]

01:01:32   does a bullet can a bullet go through an [TS]

01:01:35   army helmet [TS]

01:01:36   yes or no here's an army home there's a [TS]

01:01:39   gun [TS]

01:01:39   Wow answer yes the answer to everything [TS]

01:01:42   is it depends [TS]

01:01:43   yeah that's not a good TV and then that [TS]

01:01:46   TV show called it depends [TS]

01:01:47   that's not gonna be interesting it [TS]

01:01:49   depends that's right like it the [TS]

01:01:51   atmospheric conditions are right and [TS]

01:01:52   your helmet possible for its actually [TS]

01:01:54   rain inside it depends it depends what [TS]

01:01:57   you call rain which call inside right [TS]

01:01:59   next [TS]

01:02:00   there was a that you know during the [TS]

01:02:02   Black Hawk Down episode a lot of it was [TS]

01:02:06   revealed that I think you can see this [TS]

01:02:07   in the film that a lot of certain [TS]

01:02:09   special forces people i think Delta [TS]

01:02:12   Force [TS]

01:02:13   I decided that helmets and this is [TS]

01:02:15   probably true of a lot of Special Forces [TS]

01:02:17   people they want to move fast they want [TS]

01:02:19   to get in get out there and they don't [TS]

01:02:21   want to wear one of those 10 pot helmets [TS]

01:02:24   that like typical infantry are wearing [TS]

01:02:27   and so what they did recognize that you [TS]

01:02:30   need something to keep from bunking your [TS]

01:02:32   head and so they were the Special Forces [TS]

01:02:35   guys decided they were going to worse [TS]

01:02:36   like skateboard helmets and if you watch [TS]

01:02:40   in black hawk down the film which is a [TS]

01:02:44   dramatization of the actual event and [TS]

01:02:47   some some things are not as reported but [TS]

01:02:50   the Delta Force guys are wearing [TS]

01:02:55   skateboard helmets [TS]

01:02:58   I can't believe they would be allowed to [TS]

01:02:59   do that well you know that those these [TS]

01:03:01   are the same guys that that grow they [TS]

01:03:03   grow really long beards when they first [TS]

01:03:05   went into Afghanistan before some [TS]

01:03:06   general i'm not a military historian but [TS]

01:03:09   I mean like a we've learned a lot about [TS]

01:03:11   what we can do to prevent things like [TS]

01:03:13   traumatic head stuff and second like [TS]

01:03:14   dude you belong to the fucking military [TS]

01:03:17   we tell you what to wear because we [TS]

01:03:18   can't afford four you know what I mean [TS]

01:03:20   like it'sit's hear eyewitness and [TS]

01:03:22   operative well and like but you know GI [TS]

01:03:24   right government issue like you you [TS]

01:03:26   belong to the government you are our [TS]

01:03:27   resource and you don't get to make [TS]

01:03:29   decisions about stuff that might affect [TS]

01:03:30   your safety or that of your unit because [TS]

01:03:33   because you Dino other people are gonna [TS]

01:03:34   die now we've got a fucking problem [TS]

01:03:35   because you decided you want to go be a [TS]

01:03:37   skateboard guy but i think within their [TS]

01:03:39   own culture [TS]

01:03:40   yeah they were there just their attitude [TS]

01:03:42   was well if you make us wear ten pot [TS]

01:03:44   helmet we're gonna take it off and throw [TS]

01:03:46   it away the second we get out onto a [TS]

01:03:49   mission of fashion thing it's also is [TS]

01:03:50   hurting their ability to be agile though [TS]

01:03:53   you can't hear in them you can't see out [TS]

01:03:55   of them and also the helmet goes like [TS]

01:03:57   quite can be quite heavy Clank there was [TS]

01:03:59   an episode about 98 on 90% 99% invisible [TS]

01:04:02   recently they talked about the problem [TS]

01:04:04   of basically like you know should you [TS]

01:04:06   were huh sures like you know you can [TS]

01:04:08   take 32 decibels office sound I put [TS]

01:04:10   these things in your ear but you lose [TS]

01:04:12   the subtlety of hearing like somebody [TS]

01:04:14   rustling around or somebody whispering [TS]

01:04:15   it's a risk there they risk long-term [TS]

01:04:17   hearing damage because it enables them [TS]

01:04:19   to be able to hear smaller noises [TS]

01:04:21   similar kind of thing right but so my so [TS]

01:04:24   i think that the actually black cock [TS]

01:04:26   down this is the interesting part of the [TS]

01:04:29   story that they that inspired a redesign [TS]

01:04:33   of the helmet for all of the Armed [TS]

01:04:35   Forces turn me out closer to a [TS]

01:04:37   skateboard helmet closer fitting you [TS]

01:04:41   know with the ears more revealed so that [TS]

01:04:44   you can hear better [TS]

01:04:45   yeah a less clankety clankety is made of [TS]

01:04:48   steel but there's a at as far as i [TS]

01:04:51   understand this to be true there is one [TS]

01:04:52   recorded example of a special forces [TS]

01:04:56   person dying of a traumatic head injury [TS]

01:04:59   one in the whole history of them wearing [TS]

01:05:02   skateboard helmets [TS]

01:05:04   wow so it seems like on the one hand [TS]

01:05:07   that's too bad [TS]

01:05:09   and that guy should have had a helmet on [TS]

01:05:11   because maybe he'd be alive today but [TS]

01:05:13   also they seem to know what they're [TS]

01:05:16   doing and there they are saying to [TS]

01:05:19   themselves one way to keep from getting [TS]

01:05:21   shot in the head is to keep your head [TS]

01:05:22   down like don't be a guy who's in a [TS]

01:05:24   trench who's picking up over the top in [TS]

01:05:27   your skateboard helmet if you're gonna [TS]

01:05:28   do that [TS]

01:05:29   go find another go find a different [TS]

01:05:30   helmet over but Jenny if you're just [TS]

01:05:33   running through some some situation in [TS]

01:05:37   the middle of the night at the nobody's [TS]

01:05:39   gonna shoot you in the head the chances [TS]

01:05:41   of them scoring a headshot are pretty [TS]

01:05:44   low and so we're gonna wear these other [TS]

01:05:46   helmet and I admire that there was a [TS]

01:05:48   there was a guy grow when I was growing [TS]

01:05:50   up at Mount Alyeska who skied in a tank [TS]

01:05:56   commanders helmet like a Russian you [TS]

01:06:00   know the ones i'm talking about that [TS]

01:06:01   they they are like it's not a helmet [TS]

01:06:05   it's like it's like paths that go from [TS]

01:06:09   your forehead to the back your head like [TS]

01:06:10   five of them across the top of your head [TS]

01:06:12   that looks like it doesn't look like any [TS]

01:06:14   other kind of helmet maybe it looks like [TS]

01:06:16   a bike helmet like an old-fashioned bike [TS]

01:06:18   helmet just made a paths that's made out [TS]

01:06:20   of leather dynomite my uncle have one of [TS]

01:06:22   those yeah yeah [TS]

01:06:23   and so there was a guy not always a [TS]

01:06:25   little take a little Leatherhead cage a [TS]

01:06:27   little head [TS]

01:06:28   Leatherhead kids that's right which I [TS]

01:06:29   always assumed was something some jurors [TS]

01:06:31   a tank [TS]

01:06:32   yeah let Leatherhead kids and Jason [TS]

01:06:35   and he wore this has his ski hat right [TS]

01:06:39   and and it was like uh it stood out but [TS]

01:06:43   this is another question I have for you [TS]

01:06:46   yes when I was a young preteen and teen [TS]

01:06:48   ager the way people wore their ski hats [TS]

01:06:51   at Mount Alyeska really mattered to me [TS]

01:06:55   and stuck with me like everybody's [TS]

01:06:57   wearing a hat huh [TS]

01:06:59   because you're all on the mountain and [TS]

01:07:01   there are a lot of ways to express your [TS]

01:07:03   style on a ski mountain you know like do [TS]

01:07:05   you have the latest sweater [TS]

01:07:08   we are all watching for that stuff [TS]

01:07:10   because it's very social [TS]

01:07:12   skiing is very social sure so you're [TS]

01:07:14   like oh those with this or this year's [TS]

01:07:16   skis or those last year's keys or bull [TS]

01:07:19   are those three years ago skis this but [TS]

01:07:22   also you know Ski fashion changes very [TS]

01:07:25   fast when i first started out everything [TS]

01:07:28   was still wool and everything was role [TS]

01:07:31   and red white and blue and then as time [TS]

01:07:33   went on like by the nineties Ski fashion [TS]

01:07:35   just looked like a stuff from in living [TS]

01:07:38   color but I remember as a kid being very [TS]

01:07:44   impressed with an interested in anyone [TS]

01:07:47   who wore their ski hat in a jaunty way [TS]

01:07:50   and i still can I can still can think of [TS]

01:07:55   45 people some of them I knew some of [TS]

01:07:57   them were just characters of the of the [TS]

01:07:59   mountain [TS]

01:08:00   who wore their hat it in a jaunty way [TS]

01:08:04   and I'm just I thought about this quite [TS]

01:08:07   a bit is that an actual was that because [TS]

01:08:11   I was a teen and things like that we're [TS]

01:08:14   making a very strong impression on me [TS]

01:08:16   and I felt like the fact that this guys [TS]

01:08:19   wearing his ski hats slightly askew is a [TS]

01:08:22   bold move on his part and and is [TS]

01:08:27   impressive [TS]

01:08:28   I'm impressed by this and this is [TS]

01:08:30   something i'm taking away so is that [TS]

01:08:31   because i was a team is that because i [TS]

01:08:33   had some latent interest in fashion that [TS]

01:08:38   was that was different from other [TS]

01:08:40   people's or a is it because it's [TS]

01:08:44   genuinely it was genuinely impressive [TS]

01:08:46   you know what I mean like the guy in the [TS]

01:08:48   tank commanders had was that really like [TS]

01:08:51   if I saw that today what I would I think [TS]

01:08:53   cool what I think I'll i mean i think [TS]

01:08:56   it's kind of both but I think part of it [TS]

01:08:58   is that when somebody while wears [TS]

01:09:02   something unusual or even weird i think [TS]

01:09:06   part of it is the fact that the part [TS]

01:09:08   that most of us dinguses mrs. like oh [TS]

01:09:10   I'm going to put on a tank commander had [TS]

01:09:11   look like that guy [TS]

01:09:12   it's the confidence with which they pull [TS]

01:09:15   it off that really tells I think this is [TS]

01:09:17   the thing about fashion is and this is [TS]

01:09:19   why there's so many missteps in trying [TS]

01:09:21   to ape what other people do is you you [TS]

01:09:23   try to like emulate the kind of dumb [TS]

01:09:28   physical characteristics instead of [TS]

01:09:29   trying to emulate the confidence and [TS]

01:09:31   exuding of personality behind that John [TS]

01:09:36   yeah but I think that's what sticks with [TS]

01:09:38   you like me look at that guy how do you [TS]

01:09:40   do that [TS]

01:09:40   do you remember you remember Merlin Mann [TS]

01:09:43   from the late to thousands who me [TS]

01:09:48   the Merlin man whose hair was a was a [TS]

01:09:53   character was a bigger-than-life [TS]

01:09:54   character [TS]

01:09:55   oh yeah I mean kind of yeah sure I [TS]

01:09:56   remember him to remember this Merlin [TS]

01:09:57   Mann family everywhere was working i [TS]

01:10:00   like to think of him as the Merlin Mann [TS]

01:10:04   of that photo site was that photo site [TS]

01:10:07   that you like so much flicker flicker [TS]

01:10:09   yeah and I had lots of hair problem you [TS]

01:10:11   really were you really ran flickr I did [TS]

01:10:13   I didn't have had a big hand in that [TS]

01:10:15   thank you for having you ran the table [TS]

01:10:16   over forget who and boy you're you're [TS]

01:10:19   different hairs were very exciting to me [TS]

01:10:22   every time I tuned in it was like that a [TS]

01:10:25   lot of people try and do this [TS]

01:10:26   will Wheaton is very big about is [TS]

01:10:28   morning hair now it's one of his troops [TS]

01:10:30   who don't follow wil wheaton from his [TS]

01:10:33   work and his television personality is [TS]

01:10:35   on names on Star Wars he was on Star [TS]

01:10:37   Trek Star start back I always get those [TS]

01:10:41   confused and it's the the newer [TS]

01:10:44   generation [TS]

01:10:45   yeah normal generation huh no I'm not [TS]

01:10:49   missing this kind he likes cats he does [TS]

01:10:52   i think also desire and his entire [TS]

01:10:53   family is very handsome handsome family [TS]

01:10:55   i mean i can probably had some no [TS]

01:10:57   offense [TS]

01:10:58   no it's all right i mean i don't have [TS]

01:11:00   any dog in his race but but but your [TS]

01:11:05   hair your pioneering hair explorations [TS]

01:11:08   very very interesting and you you're not [TS]

01:11:10   somebody who says like i'm gonna wear [TS]

01:11:12   flamboyant shirt right Merlin man [TS]

01:11:14   doesn't wear a flamboyant sharp Merlin [TS]

01:11:15   man wears a pretty dependable shirts [TS]

01:11:17   already probably a solid Pendleton or [TS]

01:11:20   something you know that just says like [TS]

01:11:21   I'm here I'm here I'm queer get used [TS]

01:11:24   from but the hair yes you were bold bold [TS]

01:11:28   bold choices because so kind of had a [TS]

01:11:30   mind of its own i I never really i would [TS]

01:11:32   have a hard time finding a haircut that [TS]

01:11:34   I would like but I don't have a [TS]

01:11:35   particularly distinguished record of [TS]

01:11:38   deliberately doing something interesting [TS]

01:11:40   mmm i sometimes stumble ass-backwards [TS]

01:11:42   into something interesting interesting [TS]

01:11:43   don't realize it for a while but I i [TS]

01:11:45   just have such a fraud history of trying [TS]

01:11:47   to do something cool and because i [TS]

01:11:49   missed I mean not to keep quoting myself [TS]

01:11:51   here but because I wasn't trying to [TS]

01:11:53   emulate the physical characteristic or [TS]

01:11:55   is the way I would put it like I was [TS]

01:11:56   tracing a shadow on a sidewalk and I was [TS]

01:11:58   trying to be somebody else like [TS]

01:11:59   Hiroshima my absolutely ugly and [TS]

01:12:02   reference [TS]

01:12:02   Wow and brothers we happy few I and so [TS]

01:12:06   that thing is to get you can't do that [TS]

01:12:07   you gotta quit doing that unless you [TS]

01:12:09   pull it off if you can pull it off [TS]

01:12:10   that's great but like you know I really [TS]

01:12:12   think that the thing I don't know I'm [TS]

01:12:14   just repeating myself but that's but not [TS]

01:12:16   wasn't trying to do a thing I said come [TS]

01:12:17   here I saw a picture of a guy a few [TS]

01:12:20   years ago [TS]

01:12:20   yeah who was standing in front of a [TS]

01:12:22   fashion show I don't know [TS]

01:12:24   I you know I'm revealing a lot about [TS]

01:12:25   myself that I am that I'm being exposed [TS]

01:12:28   to photographs of guys standing outside [TS]

01:12:30   of fashion show [TS]

01:12:31   that's ok because it's a you know you [TS]

01:12:33   have to pursue that that's not a thing [TS]

01:12:34   you're just going to see right you're [TS]

01:12:36   not going to open up a magazine John's [TS]

01:12:37   countries changed a lot we're open to [TS]

01:12:38   all kinds of points of view and fluidity [TS]

01:12:40   it's it's ok if you've seen fashion [TS]

01:12:41   photos [TS]

01:12:42   thank you thank you thank by the way [TS]

01:12:43   that September issue of Vogue is coming [TS]

01:12:45   up just so you know I don't read those I [TS]

01:12:47   don't read the I don't read the [TS]

01:12:48   beginning you don't even have a TV [TS]

01:12:49   because I can't stand magazines that [TS]

01:12:52   have perfume in them find a magazine [TS]

01:12:54   every once in a while somebody will uh [TS]

01:12:56   or not somebody every once in awhile [TS]

01:12:59   Vanity Fair will send some family fare [TS]

01:13:01   at me intimated that sense of Vanity [TS]

01:13:04   Fair at you [TS]

01:13:05   yeah and I'm like don't do this yeah I [TS]

01:13:07   don't want this you know like yes okay [TS]

01:13:10   maybe there's a very interesting profile [TS]

01:13:12   Ellen john f kennedy jr. in a Vanity [TS]

01:13:14   Fair that I might actually want to read [TS]

01:13:15   but do not send these to my mailbox on [TS]

01:13:17   bidden because I open my box and for [TS]

01:13:21   conflicting male perfumes the start [TS]

01:13:24   pouring out and then I have an allergy [TS]

01:13:26   attack and is no way to live [TS]

01:13:28   I don't even carry an inhaler and I [TS]

01:13:30   should have one just for an encounter [TS]

01:13:32   with a random Vanity Fair terrible [TS]

01:13:34   condition [TS]

01:13:35   look but so I see this photograph of [TS]

01:13:37   this guy standing out in front of a [TS]

01:13:39   fashion show and he's wearing very old [TS]

01:13:42   ripped you know like near ipped Levi's [TS]

01:13:45   they're not just blown out at the [TS]

01:13:47   neither like ripped all the way down [TS]

01:13:49   like a carefully ripped settable sure [TS]

01:13:52   Reagan who fancy rips but they're not [TS]

01:13:56   fancy ripped on some pre ripped jeans [TS]

01:13:59   they're vintage Levi's that have been [TS]

01:14:00   fancy ripped and the way you fancy [TS]

01:14:03   repair Levi's but a lot of people don't [TS]

01:14:05   know this is you delicately run a razor [TS]

01:14:07   just very delicate and then let entropy [TS]

01:14:10   of the work that's right let you all [TS]

01:14:11   you're doing is getting started [TS]

01:14:12   you're just getting started with a [TS]

01:14:13   little bit of a razor cut across the [TS]

01:14:15   pants all the way down there you know [TS]

01:14:17   and then then they fray very well so [TS]

01:14:20   he's wearing these and then a [TS]

01:14:22   double-breasted blue blazer with brass [TS]

01:14:24   buttons and you know an open collared [TS]

01:14:28   shirt and then his hair is really really [TS]

01:14:30   slicked with a side part in a kind of [TS]

01:14:34   let's just call it what it is [TS]

01:14:37   brown shirt haircut Oh like a like a [TS]

01:14:40   post Macklemore your pre Macklemore Mack [TS]

01:14:42   all printing more pre Macklemore plus y [TS]

01:14:45   plus 5 more a proposed by mar pre [TS]

01:14:47   Macklemore ok and and i look at this and [TS]

01:14:51   I'm like the element here the unexpected [TS]

01:14:54   element is the double-breasted blazer [TS]

01:14:56   which is like huh [TS]

01:15:01   there's some there's some Flair [TS]

01:15:03   happening with that double-breasted [TS]

01:15:04   blazer that is not a thing that anybody [TS]

01:15:06   expected who and so I the next [TS]

01:15:11   opportunity got a double-breasted blazer [TS]

01:15:14   with brass buttons blue hard to say a [TS]

01:15:17   blue double-breasted blazer with brass [TS]

01:15:19   buttons nice [TS]

01:15:20   and i would put that blazer on in my [TS]

01:15:25   house and I'd say here I go out the door [TS]

01:15:27   in my blue double-breasted black [TS]

01:15:30   brass-plated you know you can always get [TS]

01:15:35   a couple of times I'll protools it and [TS]

01:15:36   you'll be fine and I and I would get to [TS]

01:15:40   the front door and I would be like huh [TS]

01:15:42   yeah [TS]

01:15:44   hmm what ways but you do them you [TS]

01:15:47   deposit moment you die you think [TS]

01:15:49   something wasn't quite right about it [TS]

01:15:50   yeah I would stop and i would say it [TS]

01:15:52   seems like on the face of it you're tall [TS]

01:15:54   it seems like that would be a good look [TS]

01:15:56   on you I think so too did you look like [TS]

01:15:58   look out like a cereal mascot or [TS]

01:15:59   something [TS]

01:15:59   no I looked amazing yeah but I paused at [TS]

01:16:03   the front door because it was not my [TS]

01:16:06   invention [TS]

01:16:09   o.k saw picture a guy and every once in [TS]

01:16:13   a while you see a picture of somebody in [TS]

01:16:14   here like that belongs to me that's not [TS]

01:16:16   even yours you're wearing that but you [TS]

01:16:18   don't even know what it is [TS]

01:16:19   yeah you know you feel in your gut you [TS]

01:16:21   not to think about it like you you know [TS]

01:16:23   like oh that's my thing [TS]

01:16:24   yeah yeah the first time well one time [TS]

01:16:27   many many years ago Shawn Nelson and I [TS]

01:16:30   were driving in the car and there and we [TS]

01:16:33   were driving along i was driving and the [TS]

01:16:34   light turned yellow the light turned [TS]

01:16:37   yellow at and we were at a removed from [TS]

01:16:41   that light sufficient that I could have [TS]

01:16:43   applied the brakes and stopped should [TS]

01:16:45   have probably if you want to be a [TS]

01:16:48   stickler about the law but surveying the [TS]

01:16:51   scene looking to the left and to the [TS]

01:16:54   right I realized that there was no [TS]

01:16:56   impediment to me continuing forward and [TS]

01:16:59   I neither applied the brakes nor the [TS]

01:17:01   accelerator but simply let the car move [TS]

01:17:04   as it was moving [TS]

01:17:05   he kept on keeping on I kept on keeping [TS]

01:17:07   on and so went through the intersection [TS]

01:17:09   as the light was changing to the stop [TS]

01:17:13   let's say let's say I was in the [TS]

01:17:15   intersection as it was still yellow but [TS]

01:17:17   we continued moving through the red and [TS]

01:17:20   Sean in a gesture where he was you know [TS]

01:17:24   indicating a kind of like [TS]

01:17:28   contempt even for my insouciance for my [TS]

01:17:33   sort of like devil may care he raised [TS]

01:17:38   his hands in the air and went out how [TS]

01:17:41   like to shooting two pistols like a [TS]

01:17:43   Bandido into the air but it was not in [TS]

01:17:47   admiration he was doing it as a [TS]

01:17:50   commentary like you know I guess the [TS]

01:17:53   laws don't apply everywhere i'm a i'm a [TS]

01:17:56   Bandido and I and I saw the gesture and [TS]

01:18:00   I said that belongs to me now you you [TS]

01:18:03   made that gesture in reference to me and [TS]

01:18:06   it is not a gesture that you are using [TS]

01:18:08   for yourself because it doesn't belong [TS]

01:18:10   to you [TS]

01:18:11   it belongs to me oh and i started to [TS]

01:18:14   when i was about to do something [TS]

01:18:16   reckless go out in the air with my [TS]

01:18:21   fingers sounds like it sounds like a you [TS]

01:18:22   bit [TS]

01:18:23   that's right well it became a you better [TS]

01:18:26   because it became a bit and now everyone [TS]

01:18:29   I mean I do it all the time [TS]

01:18:30   couple everyone i know associates it [TS]

01:18:33   with me [TS]

01:18:33   it's just a way of saying like okay well [TS]

01:18:36   fucking school and sean has a long time [TS]

01:18:41   ago I think saw me do it and commented [TS]

01:18:43   like hey you got that for me you took [TS]

01:18:47   that from me and sunshine probably said [TS]

01:18:49   to you it's a it's called the not your [TS]

01:18:52   friends show business [TS]

01:18:53   well a little bit like what you really [TS]

01:18:55   saw that one for him too yeah but we are [TS]

01:18:58   you gonna do with that John you were [TS]

01:18:59   never gonna use it again and it was when [TS]

01:19:01   you were using it you were using it a [TS]

01:19:03   like let's say against me and I [TS]

01:19:06   repurposed it right it's my nigga right [TS]

01:19:09   like I took it back [TS]

01:19:11   Garrett I took those guns back all I get [TS]

01:19:13   you taken back the night taking back the [TS]

01:19:14   night to those jobs back and I made it [TS]

01:19:17   up I made it a positive i spun it [TS]

01:19:19   mm and and so there's a little bit of [TS]

01:19:23   like I hope hope this is not a shed [TS]

01:19:25   that's always listening to to learn [TS]

01:19:27   english i was there so deep in in [TS]

01:19:30   analogies and metaphors and at this [TS]

01:19:32   point I'm so disoriented but your point [TS]

01:19:34   is that sometimes it belongs better on [TS]

01:19:37   somebody it's just that when it came to [TS]

01:19:38   the blue block button button blazer you [TS]

01:19:41   felt no no [TS]

01:19:41   oh that's that guy's that's Hitler hair [TS]

01:19:43   well i still can't so I have done this [TS]

01:19:46   now several times i have I didn't get [TS]

01:19:47   rid of the above the double-breasted [TS]

01:19:49   blue blazer with brass buttons I and I [TS]

01:19:54   put it on sometimes and I get as far as [TS]

01:19:56   the threshold of my house and I stopped [TS]

01:19:59   and I say this looks amazing on me [TS]

01:20:01   there's no one else in Seattle that's [TS]

01:20:02   that's doing this [TS]

01:20:04   Commodore Schmidlapp miss ya business [TS]

01:20:07   you know this is my this is my own Maj [TS]

01:20:11   to caddy shack right or whatever it is [TS]

01:20:13   looking like this guy was in New York [TS]

01:20:17   City there's nobody nobody's gonna come [TS]

01:20:20   at me and say wait a minute i mean now [TS]

01:20:23   that I've revealed I've showed my hand [TS]

01:20:24   on this program if anybody ever sees me [TS]

01:20:26   in a double-breasted blue blazer with [TS]

01:20:28   brass buttons they're gonna say I know [TS]

01:20:30   that I know what you're doing but but i [TS]

01:20:34   never was able to get outside in this [TS]

01:20:37   thing and partly it's because I don't [TS]

01:20:39   know when you sit down in a [TS]

01:20:41   double-breasted blazer apparently you're [TS]

01:20:42   supposed to leave it button and I and I [TS]

01:20:45   can't do that and uncomfortable to leave [TS]

01:20:47   the jacket buttoned when I sit down [TS]

01:20:48   because i've been i've trained myself to [TS]

01:20:51   unbutton the jacket boy sit down you do [TS]

01:20:52   that thing that gentleman do where you [TS]

01:20:54   are when you rise GG button button [TS]

01:20:57   yeah but she's even unbutton your seated [TS]

01:20:59   that's right i love that move [TS]

01:21:01   it's a great move right man sometimes [TS]

01:21:03   you know there's just this one section [TS]

01:21:04   of 2001 that I'll just watch a lot it's [TS]

01:21:08   that whole like you know in the middle [TS]

01:21:10   of the don't know jack you call it but [TS]

01:21:12   it's when working back its when [TS]

01:21:15   what's-his-name [TS]

01:21:17   hey good Marshall Floyd Floyd haywood [TS]

01:21:19   when when when when he goes to the space [TS]

01:21:22   station and it's just courtliness on a [TS]

01:21:24   spaceship [TS]

01:21:25   it's just sitting and having a drink [TS]

01:21:27   it's doing a little phone call it's [TS]

01:21:28   happening he goes and he has the meeting [TS]

01:21:30   with the people he does that move he [TS]

01:21:32   doesn't move very well as Heywood Floyd [TS]

01:21:33   is that his name [TS]

01:21:34   floodwood hey who wants a floor third [TS]

01:21:38   floor leaflet hey wood floor i'm having [TS]

01:21:40   a tough morning floor floor floor [TS]

01:21:42   Heywood Floyd Heywood Floyd you were [TS]

01:21:44   very close or even on it [TS]

01:21:47   Heywood Floyd it's three it's very makes [TS]

01:21:49   me it's one of those things when i watch [TS]

01:21:51   that it's like watching James Coburn [TS]

01:21:53   movie or something we like man I [TS]

01:21:55   wouldn't mind being in the sixties [TS]

01:21:56   mainland unbuttoned their their their [TS]

01:21:59   jacket to sit down and they butted up [TS]

01:22:00   against and you can still do it you can [TS]

01:22:02   still do you don't worry that [TS]

01:22:03   oh yeah I do it all the time but you [TS]

01:22:04   can't do a double breasted well I just [TS]

01:22:06   don't know i don't know that i used it i [TS]

01:22:08   mean as much as I thought Letterman was [TS]

01:22:10   a riot and when he started wearing the [TS]

01:22:12   wrestling shoes with khaki pants and [TS]

01:22:13   that was a funny thing but he's driving [TS]

01:22:15   me nuts that he wouldn't button up his [TS]

01:22:17   double yeah he was flapping around was [TS]

01:22:19   so stupid [TS]

01:22:21   it looked terrible he looked like he [TS]

01:22:23   looked like a a manta ray fucking flappy [TS]

01:22:28   wins it's like that time your geeky yeah [TS]

01:22:32   well why not what you got to tie your [TS]

01:22:33   get your fucking key [TS]

01:22:35   well so anything about 2001 if you think [TS]

01:22:38   about it it's a trick that's okay wit [TS]

01:22:41   you think about 2001 a Space Odyssey [TS]

01:22:44   right we think of it as expressing the [TS]

01:22:47   sixties but really there was a there was [TS]

01:22:51   a very brief moment where so much of [TS]

01:22:55   what constituted the the sixties and i'm [TS]

01:22:57   not talking about the hippie sixties but [TS]

01:22:58   I'm talking about like that the tight [TS]

01:23:00   the buttoned-up sixties the buzz aldrin [TS]

01:23:02   sixties like Van Dyke sixties the Dick [TS]

01:23:04   Van Dyke 60 so much of that was still [TS]

01:23:07   reverberating or even absolutely reverb [TS]

01:23:10   especially in the straight world you [TS]

01:23:12   might grow your hair a little bit long [TS]

01:23:13   but you still had a tailored suit [TS]

01:23:15   absolutely and that carried into the [TS]

01:23:17   seventies into our era when we were kids [TS]

01:23:19   we were still we don't think you know [TS]

01:23:22   2001 doesn't seem like out like a thing [TS]

01:23:26   of our era but in fact it was because [TS]

01:23:28   something that happened five years ago [TS]

01:23:30   now i know i know i know it's like funny [TS]

01:23:33   something that happened in 2011 [TS]

01:23:35   everything I was in the Superchunk all [TS]

01:23:38   morning and h times thing as so much [TS]

01:23:40   super chuckles like every time a song [TS]

01:23:42   came on and what this is 21 years old [TS]

01:23:43   this is 21 years old 21 years old and [TS]

01:23:46   and like to me like I would see [TS]

01:23:47   distinctions within a given year about [TS]

01:23:50   stuff you know when you're a little kid [TS]

01:23:51   you like oh my gosh you want you [TS]

01:23:54   it's like 85 like oh my god this rerun [TS]

01:23:56   from the community to is so dated [TS]

01:23:57   yeah right or this this this fashion [TS]

01:24:00   from that from earlier in 1985 [TS]

01:24:02   Oh [TS]

01:24:03   page you were so again this goes back to [TS]

01:24:06   the beginning I guess it's kind of [TS]

01:24:07   environmental awareness where you're so [TS]

01:24:09   you can't help but be super aware of [TS]

01:24:11   certain things i greet you know I I [TS]

01:24:13   still watch that and that timeless isn't [TS]

01:24:15   too strong of a word but I still think a [TS]

01:24:17   bunch of the sequences in that stand up [TS]

01:24:19   so well today one and so when we were [TS]

01:24:22   seven years old what that movie was what [TS]

01:24:24   is 70 years old [TS]

01:24:25   is it came on 69 it still works [TS]

01:24:26   instantly so is it yeah it was only six [TS]

01:24:28   years old when I was seven years old [TS]

01:24:30   we're at a point when I was getting into [TS]

01:24:32   space and imagining what life in space [TS]

01:24:34   was going to be like like it was [TS]

01:24:36   essentially the the most recent idea and [TS]

01:24:40   what space was going to be was very chic [TS]

01:24:43   and anybody it would be analogous to [TS]

01:24:46   taking like a business-class fight [TS]

01:24:48   yeah very exactly exactly right you know [TS]

01:24:50   everybody was was dressed very well [TS]

01:24:51   there were many girls shoes gonna bring [TS]

01:24:54   a juice box [TS]

01:24:55   pan pan american airlines was that was [TS]

01:24:58   the purveyor and it was at a really [TS]

01:25:01   influenced us and it was only when Star [TS]

01:25:04   Wars happened and the aesthetic of Star [TS]

01:25:07   Wars was like actually a lot of a lot of [TS]

01:25:09   the spaceships are going to be writing [TS]

01:25:11   in our kind of a little bit greasy yeah [TS]

01:25:13   the cash like yeah yeah um but but that [TS]

01:25:17   was so that any way it feels like that [TS]

01:25:18   was a very brief moment in time when [TS]

01:25:21   when we were imagining colonizing space [TS]

01:25:24   and it was going to be elegant and then [TS]

01:25:30   it became it became an elegance all [TS]

01:25:33   through the space state overall through [TS]

01:25:35   the shuttle years it always felt to me [TS]

01:25:39   kind of like yeah astronauts were were [TS]

01:25:41   the people that were you know that did [TS]

01:25:43   pretty well in biology right where they [TS]

01:25:47   want this swashbuckling Navy pilots that [TS]

01:25:49   they had been in the sixties although [TS]

01:25:50   they i'm sure all the astronauts were [TS]

01:25:52   Navy pilots until recent times but it [TS]

01:25:55   was much more like oh yeah we're going [TS]

01:25:56   to send a teacher in space it's going to [TS]

01:25:58   be you know it's it's much it's it's [TS]

01:26:00   it's not elegant it's very much like [TS]

01:26:03   we're working here this is we're doing [TS]

01:26:07   work now it's not we're not just a [TS]

01:26:11   like bold explorers we are up here doing [TS]

01:26:15   tasks [TS]

01:26:16   yeah there's there's there's there's [TS]

01:26:17   work to be done here this is not some [TS]

01:26:19   flight of fancy know like hey hand me [TS]

01:26:21   that wrench and the person like the [TS]

01:26:23   astronaut throws the wrench in it it [TS]

01:26:26   flies across the other person grabs the [TS]

01:26:27   rent and were like we were in space but [TS]

01:26:30   really we're just doing some work we're [TS]

01:26:32   working on cars up there like we're [TS]

01:26:34   throwing wrenches back and forth instead [TS]

01:26:36   of martinis like if somebody sent me a [TS]

01:26:40   martini and you flew a martini over how [TS]

01:26:42   different is that [TS]

01:26:44   yeah then a wrench right and now we're [TS]

01:26:47   introducing these four pay like Elon [TS]

01:26:51   Musk jets and you think yeah there [TS]

01:26:56   there's going to be some fake elegance [TS]

01:26:57   there it's gonna be like flying Virgin [TS]

01:26:59   Airlines where there's there's some [TS]

01:27:01   purple lighting but I still that's not I [TS]

01:27:05   mean maybe we've just maybe we've lost [TS]

01:27:07   the elegance of the sixties and that's [TS]

01:27:08   what I'm complaining about [TS]

01:27:09   uh-huh even even the elegance of the [TS]

01:27:12   sixties as prognosticated into space [TS]

01:27:14   flight into into SSTs don't you wish [TS]

01:27:19   that you'd written in SST I wish I don't [TS]

01:27:25   know what I wish upon a star [TS]

01:27:27   well part of it is the technological [TS]

01:27:29   idea of like but it really would be neat [TS]

01:27:30   to be living in a time when we were [TS]

01:27:33   looking beyond oh well nothing like we [TS]

01:27:36   even like that carefully looking at the [TS]

01:27:38   problems of our planet but we're looking [TS]

01:27:39   looking much broader than that because [TS]

01:27:41   to me like if you start thinking about [TS]

01:27:43   your place in the rest of the universe [TS]

01:27:45   you can't help but think more about [TS]

01:27:46   where you live and I think that's [TS]

01:27:48   something that gets lost sometimes is [TS]

01:27:49   when people talk about moving sidewalks [TS]

01:27:51   and jetpacks is like when we lost the [TS]

01:27:53   ambition to think about what was in the [TS]

01:27:54   rest of the universe and put a budget on [TS]

01:27:57   yes sure there's still stuff here and [TS]

01:27:58   there but you know the in our kids like [TS]

01:28:00   is somebody gonna go to the moon again [TS]

01:28:01   like I don't know it seems like they [TS]

01:28:03   have to at some point but why are we [TS]

01:28:05   working on that because when we look [TS]

01:28:07   beyond our planet we have to naturally [TS]

01:28:09   think more about our planet [TS]

01:28:11   anybody who comes back from space and [TS]

01:28:12   seen that view comes back with this [TS]

01:28:14   singular feeling about about their home [TS]

01:28:16   this this planet Earth this spaceship [TS]

01:28:19   and that we are already on and I don't [TS]

01:28:21   know I don't you know it's it's not [TS]

01:28:23   difficult for me to wax rhapsodic about [TS]

01:28:24   this [TS]

01:28:25   but I think that's one problem sure [TS]

01:28:27   there's a part of me wishes I could be [TS]

01:28:28   you know i would float and go like fly [TS]

01:28:30   around in a suit and like you know maybe [TS]

01:28:32   you need a sandwich with the crew you [TS]

01:28:36   know going to see the obelisk and all [TS]

01:28:38   that but now you're part of it is and [TS]

01:28:40   this is just the old you know our old [TS]

01:28:41   point which is like there's just [TS]

01:28:42   something that makes me a little bit sad [TS]

01:28:44   inside that we've lost our disaster for [TS]

01:28:47   exploration and not just macho [TS]

01:28:49   exploration but just exploration for its [TS]

01:28:51   own sake that helps us to understand [TS]

01:28:53   just more about the world outside of our [TS]

01:28:56   world and i think that makes our life on [TS]

01:28:59   this planet somewhat diminished as long [TS]

01:29:01   as we're not doing that and I'm like [TS]

01:29:03   about it a lot but i do think about it [TS]

01:29:04   I'm always astonished that that like [TS]

01:29:07   strong advocacy for space exploration is [TS]

01:29:11   a controversial topic because you and I [TS]

01:29:13   share a feeling of like yes we should be [TS]

01:29:17   exploring space what why are we even [TS]

01:29:18   talking about this [TS]

01:29:19   I'm embarrassed that we are doing such a [TS]

01:29:21   poor job of it and have been for so long [TS]

01:29:23   not just that we should but like what [TS]

01:29:25   the fuck are we doing get the family is [TS]

01:29:28   something we are made made to do that in [TS]

01:29:30   it and once we got that ability it seems [TS]

01:29:32   like the kind of thing where like to go [TS]

01:29:34   and explore even near space responsibly [TS]

01:29:38   it feels like our destiny yeah and I [TS]

01:29:40   wonder whether like when the bike gangs [TS]

01:29:45   came to New landia or whatever they call [TS]

01:29:49   it New Forest idea who up there in in [TS]

01:29:54   the in the canada then nobody from [TS]

01:30:00   Europe came back to the Americas for [TS]

01:30:04   another 500 years right the vikings made [TS]

01:30:06   it over here they dug some pits they [TS]

01:30:09   forged some some iron as a Viking will [TS]

01:30:13   do and then either those Vikings died or [TS]

01:30:16   they got back on the boat went home and [TS]

01:30:18   then never made it back here like [TS]

01:30:20   Vikings made it to north america and [TS]

01:30:23   then did not come back and four five [TS]

01:30:27   hundred more years there was there the [TS]

01:30:29   there be dragons until until the Spanish [TS]

01:30:34   and the Italians and the 40 days the [TS]

01:30:36   Portuguese like to get this [TS]

01:30:38   headed back out and said like let's just [TS]

01:30:42   go see if we can get rich by raping [TS]

01:30:46   people [TS]

01:30:46   yeah but then they made it here and then [TS]

01:30:49   once Magellan's sailed around the world [TS]

01:30:52   it's not like it's not like there was [TS]

01:30:54   another hundred years where people in [TS]

01:30:56   Europe or like whoa whoa let's take it [TS]

01:30:58   easy this isn't in our budget right [TS]

01:31:00   somebody and what it was was somebody [TS]

01:31:02   found gold and no one has found gold in [TS]

01:31:05   outer space yet right [TS]

01:31:07   and so you know we went up there we we [TS]

01:31:09   put over like whatever like theirs [TS]

01:31:11   theirs unobtainium there's something up [TS]

01:31:13   there that we need for this purpose and [TS]

01:31:15   the space race starts all over again [TS]

01:31:16   that kind of motivation we put a dozen [TS]

01:31:18   people on the moon [TS]

01:31:19   you know and it was like okay good we [TS]

01:31:21   can do it and I bet the Russians are [TS]

01:31:23   scared but there was no you get to the [TS]

01:31:27   moon it was like dust minds [TS]

01:31:29   let's bring back some more dust and dust [TS]

01:31:33   is worth a lot of money only because [TS]

01:31:34   only 12 people have been here how many [TS]

01:31:36   people but yeah something's gonna happen [TS]

01:31:38   up there where somebody realizes oh I [TS]

01:31:42   can collect fairy dust up here and use [TS]

01:31:45   that very dust to something you know to [TS]

01:31:48   build a cubic zirconium are you know [TS]

01:31:51   like it's a it's a it's big it's a bang [TS]

01:31:56   maybe there's some new you know some new [TS]

01:31:58   drug up there one that does what it [TS]

01:32:01   should one that doesn't make you feel to [TS]

01:32:04   back one because i make you feel too [TS]

01:32:07   good to go into a few stay for a minute [TS]

01:32:17   there [TS]

01:32:18   the alright [TS]
