8: Like Giving Natalie Portman a Trucker Cap, with Merlin Mann
◼
►
so you're talking about you gotta get a
◼
►
hammer to fix your macbook pro right
◼
►
I've got a four-year-old macbook pro in
◼
►
the end and i put to death a tough age
◼
►
55 years old I don't know that mean i
◼
►
think still has a silver keyboard
◼
►
you know I mean ancient and I put the
◼
►
SSD in there by hand and used a hammer
◼
►
because it's the only tool i have an ass
◼
►
i don't have any of these little
◼
►
screwdrivers and stuff like that and it
◼
►
works and it was it's a remarkable
◼
►
upgrade really was and I just the whole
◼
►
debate over you know the fact that you
◼
►
can upgrade the new macbook pro ball but
◼
►
that this one putting a seven hundred
◼
►
dollar SSD in there it was like getting
◼
►
a new machine my desktop machine is this
◼
►
four-year-old macbook pro and i put an
◼
►
SSD in there myself couple years ago
◼
►
gave it a big upgrade but I you know I
◼
►
don't have good tools i use the hammer
◼
►
instead of these little precision
◼
►
screwdrivers I don't know what else I
◼
►
did in their thing seems very fast but
◼
►
it it doesn't do I owe consistently so
◼
►
when I do like a recording it'll get you
◼
►
know i'll get like two minutes of good
◼
►
stuff in it just hiccups like it it's
◼
►
not good so I can't use our first guy so
◼
►
I used my macbook air which is a
◼
►
secondary computer for skype but it's
◼
►
also the machine on which I try out like
◼
►
things like mountain lion with him and
◼
►
I'd I think mountain lion the latest
◼
►
version of mountain beta 2 beta so I'm
◼
►
not complaining really but it seems to
◼
►
have had a bit of an allergic reaction
◼
►
with the mac picture get your hard drive
◼
►
really have something to do with your
◼
►
USB well now on this machine i don't i
◼
►
don't know i don't either something's
◼
►
going on with a bound line the latest
◼
►
beta on this because like for example
◼
►
like one of the reasons I was a little
◼
►
late starting this cause i just opened
◼
►
it up and macbook Gary open it up and it
◼
►
should be ready to go right and instead
◼
►
I got the beach ball and the beach ball
◼
►
just never went away and that's the sort
◼
►
of thing like i have never had problems
◼
►
like that with people at the login
◼
►
screen I yeah well you know what the 1i
◼
►
have it set up so that after it wakes up
◼
►
its sleep that it you know prompt you
◼
►
for anything but yet at all it with the
◼
►
I'm not now i have gotten it goes to
◼
►
sleep and you know it's euthanized like
◼
►
as I just won't come up
◼
►
sometimes where you left it we'll talk
◼
►
now not really kinda who cares I mean
◼
►
it's a beta I'm sure they're gonna fix
◼
►
it you know before that thing actually
◼
►
ships but I just don't want you to stay
◼
►
in the Good Book says i'm saying i'm not
◼
►
on the radar screen but you need to
◼
►
yeah but what are they gonna do you mean
◼
►
by much don't state secrets you know I
◼
►
mean I mean what the beta release of an
◼
►
operating system but a little little
◼
►
unstable right on a you know one
◼
►
particular model of macbook air i have
◼
►
not if you know they do sometimes on
◼
►
forums on flora what we're if you're
◼
►
going to learn how to start bath salts
◼
►
in a different way the way you say it is
◼
►
i think you say it's a friend who's not
◼
►
this is the parliaments ok so friend is
◼
►
not mean that may be running that on the
◼
►
macbook air pretty much with no problems
◼
►
but the problem is now for myself not my
◼
►
friend my i was very bummed to find out
◼
►
that my macpro just gonna run it
◼
►
it's too old they want to talk about
◼
►
right now it's just it's not gonna go
◼
►
i'm not in the window won't run a candy
◼
►
mountain lion I i try to get it from the
◼
►
thing I mean friend of mine tried to let
◼
►
I it's not gonna run my macpro it's
◼
►
totally bone in my head it's making me
◼
►
rethink my entire setup here get to
◼
►
those stages like every like five years
◼
►
hmm might be time to really rethink a
◼
►
yeah exactly i got it i mean i got i got
◼
►
you know for drives in here i recently
◼
►
probably unadvisedly switched from one
◼
►
terabyte everything to two terabyte
◼
►
stuff which I'm already kind of
◼
►
regretting but you know I gotta get a
◼
►
butt ton of space on this thing I can
◼
►
you know keep everything hooked up I
◼
►
don't have thunder bolt anything yet so
◼
►
if i wanted to do all that hooking up
◼
►
you know I mean but uh I'm gonna miss
◼
►
that I don't want to do with this thing
◼
►
I have to I I it's just it's just a big
◼
►
shell I don't know what to do with it I
◼
►
can sell it right because if i sell it
◼
►
somebody's gonna have to like cut the
◼
►
whole thing and put all new robot parts
◼
►
it right if they want to run online
◼
►
yeah I guess I don't people like these
◼
►
are the times for the case so they can
◼
►
make mashed raised and stuff people of
◼
►
Marco eat you want to sell one of these
◼
►
Marco thirty-eight thousand dollars
◼
►
today for a macro and he bought he
◼
►
the the quote quote new haha that was a
◼
►
pretty lights upgrade is that correct
◼
►
yeah i mean almost almost almost almost
◼
►
really really featherweight it's like
◼
►
this right we have exactly it's you know
◼
►
it's like a I i think it went from 2.66
◼
►
gigahertz 22.7 guards but he was he so
◼
►
he's been so focused on this that he
◼
►
couldn't let it go by now
◼
►
well the funny thing is is one of the
◼
►
things that i love about WWDC is is you
◼
►
go out there i got there for the week
◼
►
and it's like all of a sudden my entire
◼
►
internet is now within like three city
◼
►
blocks of each other and this is totally
◼
►
true story i forget where I was coming
◼
►
from but it was on you know what it was
◼
►
Pete went over to the peet's coffee
◼
►
that's over there at things like third
◼
►
and Howard and I was walking back to
◼
►
Moscow me west and marco was behind me I
◼
►
think Marco might have been staying at
◼
►
the w and and I went down that way we
◼
►
caught up to me and he was heading back
◼
►
over and he goes you know what and it
◼
►
just knows it's like he just opened up
◼
►
is I use thinking like you know I think
◼
►
I'm gonna buy that new mac pro and you
◼
►
know it's like wednesday that he liked
◼
►
talking to I was like they're like in
◼
►
between like right in front of moscone
◼
►
north and south which is between the W
◼
►
and and Moscow me west where WTC is
◼
►
that's where Marco talked himself into
◼
►
buying the mac pro and I was just there
◼
►
nodding my head I didn't encourage it
◼
►
I didn't discourage it i but i was there
◼
►
and then next week on the show and he
◼
►
said he ballin heating complain about
◼
►
your coffee at all eaten I think you can
◼
►
watch that you see considers Pete's to
◼
►
be pretty burned because people end up
◼
►
putting a lot of junk in it and he
◼
►
don't thank God I don't have his tastes
◼
►
like I couldn't live like that but now
◼
►
him that's a big deal because he's can
◼
►
ask for favors your show but i can ask
◼
►
one favor i miss your show but just just
◼
►
for the sake of having some kind of a
◼
►
contrivance can we act like I don't know
◼
►
all that much stuff about computers
◼
►
okay um that's how I always treat you
◼
►
ok but you know what that's gonna help
◼
►
so much now Marcus case when he
◼
►
making the making software he needs the
◼
►
fastest concealed like that that changes
◼
►
his his career if he can make the
◼
►
software turn into software faster right
◼
►
it is going to be sitting around some
◼
►
kind of hobble genuine macbook air he
◼
►
needs something that's gonna be called
◼
►
building right because it takes time
◼
►
that takes time and it takes it to your
◼
►
pagan out your processors when you're
◼
►
trying to make the instant papers that
◼
►
correct yes that's one of those things
◼
►
where the rest of us people who you know
◼
►
like I don't think there's anything i do
◼
►
anymore a computer that i have to wait
◼
►
for the computer I i have the way less
◼
►
energy unless something has gone wrong
◼
►
that's exactly the same for me there's
◼
►
nothing I do that wasn't a runaway
◼
►
process that I mean occasionally you'll
◼
►
see some squirrely happen for some
◼
►
reason occasionally multi markdown takes
◼
►
four processors and i don't know why but
◼
►
friends not even running anything which
◼
►
is weird but you know whatever it be
◼
►
quit to quit the process but now like
◼
►
what if i get real crazy and I have you
◼
►
know 30 Safari windows open and a bunch
◼
►
of tabs in each one and and there's a
◼
►
couple of them that are doing JavaScript
◼
►
over and open up activity monitor and it
◼
►
says safari is using 90-some percent of
◼
►
my cpu just idle in the background then
◼
►
yes things get slow and presumably if I
◼
►
had a faster machine i could still have
◼
►
all of that going on and it wouldn't be
◼
►
as noticeable but in general on my max
◼
►
I'm never waiting for the cpu whereas
◼
►
developers absolutely are like video
◼
►
like if you're if you're doing video
◼
►
there's a really kind of neat
◼
►
you might have seen this on the app
◼
►
store there's up I saw it ostensibly
◼
►
because I was trying to test the new
◼
►
drives you know when you get any dries
◼
►
it's a good idea to kind of put him
◼
►
through a torture test and at least find
◼
►
out to the extent possible how you know
◼
►
what I mean they say for drugs bad it's
◼
►
going in the first few weeks which has
◼
►
been my experience actually did find 1i
◼
►
got a clunker but I there's this app you
◼
►
can get and something disc something and
◼
►
then cooked and I think what it does
◼
►
it's made for video folks and so you
◼
►
pound on this drive super hard and it
◼
►
shows you how much like what's what's
◼
►
sizes of video you can reasonably do
◼
►
with your computer so right so if you're
◼
►
if you're pushing out whatever 1080p
◼
►
giant video you want all the power you
◼
►
can get right that's heavily math
◼
►
intensive stuff right
◼
►
pushing on instapaper right tell you
◼
►
that was a good purchase room I yeah I
◼
►
don't know maybe at I guess the thing
◼
►
i'm not i'm confused about is how slow
◼
►
but what kind of machine repair is
◼
►
replacing with the i would i would
◼
►
always feel like the same thing is like
◼
►
moving somewhere you know like when
◼
►
you're in a house you notice everything
◼
►
that's wrong with where you live you
◼
►
know the parking Sox your neighbor your
◼
►
I don't know what allowed to say on here
◼
►
but your neighbors an unpleasant person
◼
►
you know what you mean like you notice
◼
►
everything that's wrong and then when
◼
►
you move you suddenly noticed all these
◼
►
things that you never knew or right
◼
►
before and as i get older i start to
◼
►
think more about the overhead involved
◼
►
in changing anything and even today with
◼
►
like migration assistant everything so
◼
►
much better you can I have successfully
◼
►
restored an ipad from the iCloud in like
◼
►
minutes that you know sometimes it works
◼
►
but you know what i mean it's like to be
◼
►
the overhead of moving to a new machine
◼
►
would be so much juju that I would worry
◼
►
about that I would want a bigger
◼
►
thinking about getting a new macbook air
◼
►
because even though mind still working
◼
►
great for almost two years ago i'm
◼
►
attracted to the new ones but don't you
◼
►
think I mean like I would way that in
◼
►
terms of that bump and speed i would
◼
►
think a lot about whether it's worth you
◼
►
know me just for the chance that maybe
◼
►
it's got a bum USB port or something
◼
►
don't mean like that stuff happens the
◼
►
yeah I also worry about and when I buy a
◼
►
Mac I do i do I still feel like this i
◼
►
still feel like you start you start over
◼
►
right don't you go totally clean and
◼
►
well that's now I don't really do that
◼
►
but i had i feel like i'm gonna i'm i'm
◼
►
in with this thing for four years
◼
►
that's what i like to do I like to get
◼
►
it set up and then I add all my stupid
◼
►
little extras and get all the little
◼
►
preferences moved over and and the
◼
►
things that don't happen automatically
◼
►
just through migration assistant
◼
►
although I guess what i do is i don't
◼
►
really use the migration assistant i try
◼
►
to like start using the thing new and
◼
►
then slowly one by one as I miss things
◼
►
move them over that used to being up
◼
►
that used to be easier in some ways that
◼
►
back when you know what I mean like back
◼
►
when you could just pull over an
◼
►
application drop it in the folder I mean
◼
►
for that matter you know extensions you
◼
►
can just drop an extension in and
◼
►
right you know what I mean he knew even
◼
►
if you're not doing any tape stuff for
◼
►
crazy cakes tough or anything like that
◼
►
there's still there still a certain
◼
►
amount of to do today and where's
◼
►
knock on wood has you know if you've got
◼
►
the time and the connection i bump blown
◼
►
away with how migration assistant works
◼
►
i have to say is it worked pretty well
◼
►
for you yeah it does especially it works
◼
►
a lot better for like Amy like as a just
◼
►
a normal person it doesn't have stupid
◼
►
system extensions and stuff like that
◼
►
you know if you make sure you got enough
◼
►
and she gets a new one she gets a new
◼
►
machine you just do the standard
◼
►
migration assistant thing and all of a
◼
►
sudden an hour to later her machine is
◼
►
all of our stuff on it I have it that's
◼
►
that still feels like magic to me I
◼
►
gotta say that this next one I don't
◼
►
know if I want to spend the dough
◼
►
because I i I've always said that my the
◼
►
su-30 that I had whatever in there I
◼
►
guess early nineties always still feels
◼
►
like in my head like pound-for-pound
◼
►
still feels like the fastest Mac I ever
◼
►
that's probably not accurate but given
◼
►
the balance of running like word 5.1 you
◼
►
know what I mean like everything I was
◼
►
doing just felt lightning-fast on a
◼
►
computer but I gotta say this macbook
◼
►
air i bought it on my birthday like
◼
►
november two thousand ten i bought this
◼
►
thing and it's to this day it still
◼
►
feeling it still feels ridiculously fast
◼
►
I know part of that's the SSD drive but
◼
►
I mean that this one again my macpro
◼
►
it's like beachball city and i'm forever
◼
►
Apple jacking and f cking and doing all
◼
►
the Mojo to try and you know when I
◼
►
don't know this is true for you in my
◼
►
experience it feels like most the time i
◼
►
it's not because the processor stuff or
◼
►
whatever it's because yeah maybe I'm low
◼
►
on space but I it feels like it's always
◼
►
like a tiny little nick of disc damage
◼
►
that might be causing it to forget that
◼
►
yeah I know exactly and so i'll go but i
◼
►
don't think i get it anymore with the
◼
►
ssds I think the ssds are sort of like
◼
►
that well that's the thing is i mean i
◼
►
don't know i'm so so the new macbook
◼
►
airs don't get the right now that's only
◼
►
on the macbook pro right exactly yeah so
◼
►
that's you know it's it's kinda like why
◼
►
didn't get you know the ipad 3 is
◼
►
because it's just not enough there yet
◼
►
it's why for the sake of argument friend
◼
►
is not me would not put iOS 6 on Carrie
◼
►
phone it's not like I don't need sports
◼
►
from this not me does not need support
◼
►
scores you know I'm saying it's not
◼
►
it's almost there with macbook air just
◼
►
because now i'm hungry in the same way
◼
►
i'm guessing like Marco I'm hungry for
◼
►
that like that pounding speed it's you
◼
►
know so you know that phenomenon that's
◼
►
so a common it's a cliché which is you
◼
►
get your new computer and you go oh my
◼
►
god this is so much faster than my other
◼
►
computer and within four to nine days he
◼
►
stopped noticing that it's faster now
◼
►
maybe this is my virtue of the fact that
◼
►
i do have two main max that I do stuff
◼
►
on that that macbook air still feels so
◼
►
freakin fast to me I mean everything
◼
►
everything feels so fast it's like it
◼
►
really is like a completely different
◼
►
experience and in the memory very first
◼
►
notice i I've got back and forth on now
◼
►
back on launch bar but what I really
◼
►
remember was when i first got it and I
◼
►
still in Quicksilver it was the first
◼
►
time in years the Quicksilver was a
◼
►
no-look app it has been so long since I
◼
►
could just hit a thing and know that it
◼
►
was working in type to deny me know
◼
►
because for a long time it went down as
◼
►
Quicksilver or my mac but I got to where
◼
►
I hid the thing and then I look to make
◼
►
sure it got it and I type to make sure
◼
►
that had caught up and you know as what
◼
►
that stuff I think you like this a long
◼
►
time ago like the name i think that was
◼
►
you looking to like the difference in
◼
►
like you know portions of a second in
◼
►
terms of whether people will buy
◼
►
something on amazon or on a site its
◼
►
imperceptible but but you do it is
◼
►
perceptible somewhere in your brain and
◼
►
anyway that macbook air just so blazing
◼
►
fast i think i'm addicted I'm hungry and
◼
►
that's why I think a person like Marco
◼
►
who probably a little too much money
◼
►
like you go out and get that extra
◼
►
little bit because you don't mean it's
◼
►
like you know you at least you know in
◼
►
your mind when you're sitting there and
◼
►
waiting for the instapaper to get made
◼
►
at least in your mind your knowing that
◼
►
there's no chance you could be working
◼
►
on something that's faster
◼
►
yeah I I'd see the logic of that I do
◼
►
especially if you're there it's the same
◼
►
reason that I think it's worth it to buy
◼
►
a good chair you know that you're in it
◼
►
all the time you know I i spent i think
◼
►
i think i bought this chair about a year
◼
►
ago but i spent like the last I think
◼
►
about that chair at ikea in 1999 or
◼
►
something like that and it was like ikea
◼
►
price desk chair and it was so I don't
◼
►
know maybe I spent 60 bucks in 99 on a
◼
►
chair that I thought was pretty
◼
►
comfortable it didn't have adjustable
◼
►
arm rest but they just were perfectly
◼
►
placed for my arms very comfortable
◼
►
chair and I sat in that chair my home
◼
►
office until like last year i think and
◼
►
then it finally they literally just
◼
►
broke and my standards for buying a
◼
►
chair where well i think you know 70 80
◼
►
bucks is about what you spend on an
◼
►
office chair and you know what I thought
◼
►
that's not i should get seduced and
◼
►
research because I'm there I'm here all
◼
►
day long I'm here I don't know how long
◼
►
do I work i think i work at least an
◼
►
hour a day or more importantly spend it
◼
►
in like three minutes in vegas exactly
◼
►
so i don't know i know i said i got this
◼
►
chair and i love it and i think i spent
◼
►
I don't like seven hundred dollars on it
◼
►
or something like them which seems crazy
◼
►
to me it still seems crazy than air on
◼
►
that it's it's not an aeron it's like
◼
►
it's like an errand i forget the name of
◼
►
it but it might even have been designed
◼
►
but it's like super adjustable air
◼
►
economic chuckles yeah it doesn't have I
◼
►
don't think anywhere near as many points
◼
►
of adjustment as as an actual air on but
◼
►
it's like that and it has a couple of
◼
►
key ways that it's adjustable and it
◼
►
just it's have it set up just right and
◼
►
I always you know very very comfortable
◼
►
in the chair but it's worth it for you
◼
►
know because I expect to have this chair
◼
►
at least 10 years that's like a sharp
◼
►
exactly i mean it's it's not that much
◼
►
more money to get and maintain a good
◼
►
knife and keep it sharp because you're
◼
►
going to be driven a little bit crazy
◼
►
every time you almost cut your finger
◼
►
every time you touch a cucumber
◼
►
that's no way to live I i agree with you
◼
►
and that's why I mean like I don't know
◼
►
that again i have so much like probably
◼
►
out-of-date accumulated Mac conventional
◼
►
wisdom in my head but I still always
◼
►
feel like if you're gonna buy a mac by
◼
►
the by the top-of-the-line one in
◼
►
whatever you're buying by putting as
◼
►
much room as you can get the biggest
◼
►
hard drive you can everything everything
◼
►
and even if its imperceptible like when
◼
►
I got that macbook air I got the most
◼
►
tricked-out when I could because there's
◼
►
never going to be a day where I go I
◼
►
wish this thing was just a little bit
◼
►
slower and you can you know the ram you
◼
►
can always use more RAM that's number
◼
►
you're never going to know
◼
►
I need more ram exactly now I totally
◼
►
agree it is funny that I think about
◼
►
that i mean i use your mark down
◼
►
I mean it's what I to the point where
◼
►
people are sick of hearing about it it's
◼
►
what I do all day long and what is that
◼
►
I mean it's has a text file and then
◼
►
occasionally it runs a little filter and
◼
►
but i mean that's that's really the
◼
►
extent acorn like I go in a corner and I
◼
►
do stuff in layers and I mean it's
◼
►
nothing like what I used to do with
◼
►
photoshop back in the day it's kind of
◼
►
funny though that computing power has
◼
►
gone through the roof
◼
►
I'm doing less and less stuff that would
◼
►
need it I don't play games you know what
◼
►
i mean but it does make a difference in
◼
►
your if you like workflow there's so
◼
►
many little things if you have added
◼
►
little bits of stuff to make your
◼
►
computer work more the way you want
◼
►
I think it will tolerate a lot of that
◼
►
stuff better we have more like I almost
◼
►
want to say like I don't know
◼
►
headroom like you just you're not gonna
◼
►
run into those barriers as fast you're
◼
►
not going to have to like delete stuff
◼
►
from your drive is often you're not
◼
►
going to have to like you know run all
◼
►
those utilities we used to have to run
◼
►
to find out what weird thing was causing
◼
►
the problem that i like the chair
◼
►
analogy though I freaked my god I'm
◼
►
under strict forgetting I'm under strict
◼
►
orders from my family to get a new chair
◼
►
it's it's become it looks like something
◼
►
that like used to be a well-loved teddy
◼
►
bear and now like somebody at bus
◼
►
stations been sleeping on its it is it
◼
►
is disgusting and it's not economic and
◼
►
I can't feel my left off
◼
►
I think the problem is with you you
◼
►
should got the air on because now you
◼
►
don't have the the triceps flexor now it
◼
►
is it's going to have an unarmed it is
◼
►
also mine is like an air on which is in
◼
►
that it's like a mesh you know like
◼
►
instead of a padded foam thing that you
◼
►
sit on it it's a mesh thing which I
◼
►
think if you know if you really want to
◼
►
think about the accumulated to that go
◼
►
into a chair i do think that's the way
◼
►
to go for long-term maybe not it get to
◼
►
scatological but there's something oh
◼
►
you're seeing air that thing out a
◼
►
little that you know I'm saying that
◼
►
that uh I'm saying that maybe that that
◼
►
ikea one that I had for 12 years had a
◼
►
you know maybe i shouldn'ta just
◼
►
throwing it out the trash maybe I should
◼
►
have taken that to like a some kind of
◼
►
special disposal we ever get stuff like
◼
►
you know it's so crazy making and get
◼
►
stuff in the mail that's got like
◼
►
private information on your life haha
◼
►
now i don't want credit card thing I
◼
►
don't want this and then what do you
◼
►
gotta tear off all of your identifying
◼
►
information if you're like me in your
◼
►
weirdo either like shred it or you tear
◼
►
it into pieces and put in different
◼
►
trash cans friends not mean in your case
◼
►
you probably should have cut out i don't
◼
►
wanna say the center of the seat
◼
►
you should have cut out at least an oval
◼
►
right after going out and a an asshole i
◼
►
don't think that ass ellipses and then
◼
►
you should probably either shred that or
◼
►
put that in several garbage cans maybe
◼
►
hazmat bag exact nobody's going to want
◼
►
that you put on the street you can harm
◼
►
a kid exactly you live in Philadelphia
◼
►
hear you you like a good meal i don't
◼
►
know i did try something drives me crazy
◼
►
like on NPR when they're constantly
◼
►
advertising the the Aeron chair and true
◼
►
black I don't know if you get that their
◼
►
know every time I hear that get angry
◼
►
about aeron chairs like I don't know
◼
►
exclusive movies really Aeron chair now
◼
►
available in true black and you're like
◼
►
oh god damn it I wish I hadn't bought
◼
►
just that horse crap black one a few
◼
►
years ago as it really is closer to
◼
►
charcoal and now i have no i have not
◼
►
heard this what is the difference do
◼
►
they explain the difference between
◼
►
black and true don't think they need to
◼
►
explain i think you keep your Johnson
◼
►
rod type situation with this chair stuff
◼
►
i mean i think i think it's around all
◼
►
the way down you could use always
◼
►
probably I'm guessing there's always
◼
►
more costly like mattresses you know a
◼
►
racquetball yeah are right
◼
►
same deal also can i just say mattresses
◼
►
another situation we should probably cut
◼
►
the ellipsis yeah well probably several
◼
►
lipsy especially if you have made my
◼
►
need a shredder like a giant industrial
◼
►
sized shredder you should this room i
◼
►
I don't listen to the radio much I don't
◼
►
want the commercial radio much but when
◼
►
I do it's all about mattresses
◼
►
I'm just think there's a lot of
◼
►
mattresses out there that probably
◼
►
should be dealt with you know you see
◼
►
the street mattresses right you get
◼
►
Street mattresses i have you mean when
◼
►
you see mattresses on the city is what
◼
►
ya people just add they're not that they
◼
►
put this way John they're not putting a
◼
►
lot of care into what happens to the
◼
►
mattress a lot it's a lot of stuff has
◼
►
gone down on that mattress Jonas Jonas
◼
►
and I have a running gag when we see a
◼
►
street mattress this is something you
◼
►
see in it and you know I think any urban
◼
►
area you often to see a mattress
◼
►
shoes on the wires you just see matches
◼
►
some artichoke is you do you want a nap
◼
►
haha i don't know what i would do we got
◼
►
we got a fully Swedish one but now you
◼
►
got me thinking about the that that
◼
►
aerated but hammock and now it's gonna
◼
►
be troubling to me and I feel like I'm
◼
►
to need to stand up every time I need to
◼
►
break when i'm i'm thinking the true
◼
►
black Iran is that you say that and all
◼
►
I can think of is the the business card
◼
►
scene from american psycho haha yeah
◼
►
right and they're talking about their
◼
►
errands and then the last guy he says
◼
►
well there's true black and then the guy
◼
►
knows you know then he gets like the
◼
►
sweat because he knows he's he's been
◼
►
beaten doesn't have to but that's the
◼
►
sort of thing that's why I was reluctant
◼
►
to to even consider these
◼
►
five-hundred-dollar and more office
◼
►
chairs because I just didn't want to get
◼
►
into that whole thing at night you know
◼
►
that don't you feel like a sucker
◼
►
I mean like a sucker for spending I mean
◼
►
about you but like I don't spend seven
◼
►
hundred dollars on chair is very often
◼
►
but sometimes I'll go like you know I
◼
►
need to go spend some money myself to
◼
►
let's say maybe the chair and the chair
◼
►
is a good way to do that I don't spend
◼
►
that much less a lot of dough for me but
◼
►
my problem is i would go in there and I
◼
►
would want some kind of John syracuse
◼
►
with me i would want some kind of
◼
►
seating lawyer who could go in there and
◼
►
make sure that i'm not getting the
◼
►
screwgy right because I i could easily
◼
►
go in there like the mattress thing
◼
►
it is a racket mattresses are a
◼
►
reference but in my case it's the same
◼
►
for everything i buy and and you know
◼
►
really to nothing not to be on topic but
◼
►
one thing to apples credit is really
◼
►
only so many things you can do to trick
◼
►
it out you can go and get like a you
◼
►
know a calfskin case for your dingus but
◼
►
by and large you know you're not gonna
◼
►
be able to get you can't get like you
◼
►
know what ninety six gigs of ram just to
◼
►
the device will work fine with with this
◼
►
kind of thing I think this is an upscale
◼
►
marketing John I think there are always
◼
►
add-ons like you like Las Vegas but
◼
►
there's always a nice sweet you can get
◼
►
a bittersweet no one's been in yet
◼
►
there's one that they've just been sick
◼
►
like maybe that maybe that's the gimmick
◼
►
gimmick is else it's a virgin sweet
◼
►
good i can see two sexy two reasons for
◼
►
that I can see the one is which is like
◼
►
no don't even look over there like that
◼
►
no one's ever been in there and that
◼
►
makes them want to upgrade but also for
◼
►
somebody who is a cost-conscious multi
◼
►
Chamillionaire you go and sit in your
◼
►
second nice and sweet like we gotta put
◼
►
we also got a pope john paul sweet
◼
►
obviously the man's deceased God rest
◼
►
he's never even in i would like the vice
◼
►
there's a lot of ice in Vegas you know
◼
►
electoral system say stays and I would
◼
►
like I would like the second wedding
◼
►
suite ma you know we're here on a budget
◼
►
during the practice wedding suite given
◼
►
the first giving the first marriage
◼
►
sweet it's in there you got some get
◼
►
some get some cooks and you got some
◼
►
some things that will eventually become
◼
►
misunderstandings maybe a fruit basket
◼
►
you go on your it's your second marriage
◼
►
and you go on your honeymoon and then
◼
►
that night did you know the first night
◼
►
you're out any call this solemn over to
◼
►
your table and you're like hey this is
◼
►
let's go big but hey second marriage
◼
►
there's a classic line from The Simpsons
◼
►
that I use all the time was celebrating
◼
►
the anniversary of Homer says waiter
◼
►
bring us a bottle of your second sheet
◼
►
see second your second sheet with stamp
◼
►
yeah you know it's hard yeah I think I
◼
►
think you realize you know how God don't
◼
►
get me started on weddings but ok so for
◼
►
example though I'm i am so on economic
◼
►
and I had an irk pinched nerve recently
◼
►
that was really really awful and i think
◼
►
i'm still getting rid of it a little bit
◼
►
but my economic situation is bad and I'm
◼
►
gonna confess something on your program
◼
►
that I've never I don't think and fast
◼
►
before which is the my desk I was
◼
►
frustrated with the size of desks
◼
►
because i used to be a very messy desk
◼
►
person I'm just I'm just not think about
◼
►
it does person now but I used to be when
◼
►
I had a job i had piles and piles and
◼
►
piles of stuff on my desk but the worst
◼
►
part is and this is I'm gonna confess
◼
►
something to you I don't think I've ever
◼
►
said before the desk that I have is
◼
►
actually it's a cafeteria table that I
◼
►
stole from my college
◼
►
ok so if anybody's ever seen a photo of
◼
►
of anything I've ever done on my desk
◼
►
you'll see it's this fake wood grain and
◼
►
it's one of those giant like folding
◼
►
tables that she would have and say a
◼
►
student center in sarasota florida so
◼
►
it's a it's a good height for eating and
◼
►
expensive food but it's it's not a great
◼
►
height for doing work so I'm doing you
◼
►
know the key rookie mistake and
◼
►
economics as i understand it I stuff
◼
►
aside is that my elbows are lower than
◼
►
my hands and this is why I can't feel my
◼
►
arm you have that no I i'm actually i
◼
►
think in terms of I don't know I'm sure
◼
►
an expert could come in and correct me
◼
►
now long ago I had enough wrist pain and
◼
►
and etc that I did the research and
◼
►
bought a desk that a very low so my
◼
►
wrists are always lower than my elbows
◼
►
to have one of those fruity keyboard
◼
►
drop deals with a little drawer
◼
►
no doesn't seem a little bit on
◼
►
masculine know-it-all does i think is
◼
►
you know I think any time you introduce
◼
►
hinges or or anything that's like a
◼
►
drawer it's kind of masculine remember
◼
►
when you get a rollout mouse drawer you
◼
►
go to get the office depot you can roll
◼
►
out my story and that and you get that
◼
►
little meeting at the CD billy bookcase
◼
►
type box thing we could put cds on your
◼
►
remember that yeah I do and I always
◼
►
you're always remember thinking with the
◼
►
mouse tour wool when you're gonna put
◼
►
I mean I guess maybe you know other
◼
►
people aren't like me and if they're
◼
►
they're doing other things at their desk
◼
►
then using their computer but if i'm at
◼
►
my desk i'm using the computer why in
◼
►
the world would i want to put the mouse
◼
►
yeah right exactly exactly even if
◼
►
you're and and you know what I said the
◼
►
same thing until I started having
◼
►
relatives and and now my relatives have
◼
►
these kinds of things where it's not
◼
►
really a good like think nights not a
◼
►
nice desk to have in your kitchen and
◼
►
it's really not a nice computer space
◼
►
either it's got bills and pictures all
◼
►
pictures of the kids from when they were
◼
►
cute and then you got your mousing area
◼
►
i totally agree i think this is why is
◼
►
why I'm so angry about my macpro
◼
►
mountain lion is I is ugly and gross and
◼
►
hygienic as my setup is here
◼
►
it works like everything's where I
◼
►
wanted to be you know i mean i don't
◼
►
have to noodle with stuff I've got the
◼
►
dell 30-inch deal here I got a dell 20
◼
►
whatever we're back in the day when you
◼
►
get the radius turn it on its side i do
◼
►
screen and I know according to all the
◼
►
nerve suppose to have like seven of the
◼
►
same screen you know but I've got a 30
◼
►
inch dell in front of my face here and
◼
►
then I off to the right I got my other
◼
►
dell that generic del everybody has to
◼
►
turn to the side and that's where I keep
◼
►
my mark that app running so i can see
◼
►
the big document in a portrait but it
◼
►
all works great and I got the clicky
◼
►
keyboard and it just it all works
◼
►
together and I think I'd be giving away
◼
►
something if I had either a mouse drawer
◼
►
or or it now you have just doesn't seem
◼
►
weird to do the gig you have a clicky
◼
►
keyboard but you run it laid down your
◼
►
macbook pro now i'm running lid open but
◼
►
screen off its off to the side off to
◼
►
the side so ministry is not distracting
◼
►
now because it's it's turn the other way
◼
►
I don't like that at all
◼
►
well it's not good install it all looks
◼
►
terrible it really does i I can't even
◼
►
send you a photo because it's i think
◼
►
i've seen some pictures and it looks
◼
►
like something out of Brazil it's not
◼
►
crowded for a man of your stature is a
◼
►
little crowded in your room
◼
►
yeah it is but I kind of but I'd I need
◼
►
a small room because I will however big
◼
►
the rumors that I'll just fill it up
◼
►
with junk like Andy Rooney can ask a
◼
►
yeah and this have anything to do with
◼
►
I don't want to be judgy but is there
◼
►
any chance that your TV has become a
◼
►
no why would my TV be a problem because
◼
►
you have the largest TV anyways everyone
◼
►
is it in a different room
◼
►
okc but here's what I'm saying has an
◼
►
ottoman moved in there maybe books know
◼
►
how many records you got like Tom Petty
◼
►
maybe some tom petty records need to be
◼
►
in the other room which have so much TV
◼
►
that you're just no room in there now
◼
►
that's all you know that bathroom is
◼
►
great but that's because i have nothing
◼
►
to do with that room from just a sofa
◼
►
and a giant hundred and seventy two inch
◼
►
plasma screen that's incredible
◼
►
now you could burn in with that I nope
◼
►
no you don't have to run a screensaver
◼
►
on that or anything just leave it on all
◼
►
the time now while you turn it off when
◼
►
you're done watching watching your shows
◼
►
don't leave a pause you know
◼
►
Syracuse's got me spooked about that he
◼
►
has his he shuts it off the second he
◼
►
has to go and take a whiz shut the whole
◼
►
thing down all the way down now
◼
►
I don't do that do a worry about that I
◼
►
we've got a really really we need to get
◼
►
it sets from costco and it's got like
◼
►
three big black marks on the screen at
◼
►
the top that doesn't sound good looks
◼
►
cloudy i don't think that supposed to be
◼
►
like that i don't know we have mac mini
◼
►
running at home for all of our media
◼
►
stuff but it's it's not first first
◼
►
generation but it's old and it being
◼
►
serious is this sounds crazy but it's
◼
►
kind of related when you're on a macbook
◼
►
air a lot of the day or if I'm an ipad
◼
►
the ipad 2 is a thousand times faster
◼
►
than the thing that's running DMVs
◼
►
whatever those are or mkvs whatever
◼
►
those are you don't mean no I dunno even
◼
►
you're mostly an apple TV man though
◼
►
right yeah pretty much everything I
◼
►
watches appletv are you streaming it
◼
►
running off a local box streaming from
◼
►
just connect to itunes and if it's not
◼
►
on itunes then I'm i'm not watching if
◼
►
you'd asked me six months ago whether
◼
►
that would work i would say sometimes I
◼
►
can't believe how well that works it
◼
►
works really well it's one of the few
◼
►
things apple has going on in the cloud
◼
►
that I think they've really got down
◼
►
no I there's like three things in that
◼
►
space that they're getting right and
◼
►
almost everything else is a mess
◼
►
yeah i totally agree with you last I
◼
►
told you I think it actually I don't
◼
►
it was in messages that app so it
◼
►
probably didn't go through what I was
◼
►
telling you i watch the I was meant to
◼
►
tell you i watch the Johnny Carson thing
◼
►
I which is which is really really
◼
►
interesting but I watched it like you
◼
►
suggested i watched on my iPad in the
◼
►
PBS app right which was completely crazy
◼
►
making it was like after I got my iphone
◼
►
and I had to go back to occasionally
◼
►
doing anything on my chubby or or nuvi I
◼
►
guess anything that ends with an is
◼
►
going to be a terrible interface because
◼
►
i feel like i had to punch it had to get
◼
►
a special prodding stick to make the
◼
►
chumby work you don't mean like when
◼
►
your kid picks up a kindle and tries to
◼
►
yep that's how I felt I've gotten so
◼
►
spoiled already on apple TV streaming
◼
►
that like when I want to watch this PBS
◼
►
thing and like a notification popped up
◼
►
and then i have to like start over or
◼
►
something was so weird
◼
►
yeah I run into that sometimes with the
◼
►
baseball games because i have the
◼
►
mentality yeah and it works great on
◼
►
apple TV but every once in awhile and I
◼
►
don't even think it's happening this
◼
►
season but every once in a while like
◼
►
that the streaming on apple TV with MLB
◼
►
would get get janky and i would think
◼
►
while switch to my phone because it's
◼
►
right here in my pocket and do the
◼
►
airplay to the apple TV and then that's
◼
►
just as good but then all of a sudden
◼
►
one somebody sends you a text message in
◼
►
the whole thing just falls apart because
◼
►
the phone like drops the airplay so it
◼
►
can show you that the alert
◼
►
I i find that extremely frustrating and
◼
►
uh personally and I i if I had my
◼
►
druthers I would wish that that would
◼
►
work a little bit differently and here's
◼
►
a use case from from literally 10
◼
►
minutes before our call
◼
►
I was on I was on a phone call with
◼
►
somebody long phone call and you know a
◼
►
long phone call means four minutes 45
◼
►
you gotta do gonna take a little
◼
►
breather in between right yeah got to
◼
►
spend a penny and so I jonathan coulton
◼
►
got to hear me urinate for about 15
◼
►
seconds because i thought that i had hit
◼
►
the thing it shut off the call but the
◼
►
dingus was up telling me that I had a
◼
►
podcast with john gruber in 10 minutes
◼
►
it's jonathan got a little cross country
◼
►
treat that doesn't it seem like i should
◼
►
be able to hit the red button
◼
►
I mean you know there's always the joke
◼
►
about like you can't like slam the phone
◼
►
down with anybody with a mobile phone
◼
►
like a feature phone doesn't seem weird
◼
►
that I have to dismiss a pop-up in order
◼
►
to like turn the phone off yeah i think
◼
►
that the popups those blue pop up alerts
◼
►
and iOS are oddly modal they're like the
◼
►
JavaScript alerts you know when you just
◼
►
in JavaScript you just type alert space
◼
►
you know whatever the string here and
◼
►
you get this thing that just pops up and
◼
►
you can't use anything else in your
◼
►
browser until you you know it seems
◼
►
oddly reminds me of of not os9 but
◼
►
whatever system nine well-liked system
◼
►
we could six though you know what I mean
◼
►
where everything where you had to click
◼
►
ok or cancel and that was it you could
◼
►
write desktop to click on write any time
◼
►
an alert and any app would come up it
◼
►
was system model you couldn't switch to
◼
►
another app you had to do it just seems
◼
►
very very model it just seems I don't
◼
►
just one of those things where I think i
◼
►
hey little things apple could fix in
◼
►
ios6 just seems like they should I don't
◼
►
know be at the top and slide down and
◼
►
just sit there until you deal with them
◼
►
you know sort of sort of more like a not
◼
►
called what's the thing called on the
◼
►
mac that now they have in the
◼
►
Notification Center in Mountain Lion the
◼
►
like we choose between it's almost like
◼
►
he's talking about like the thing that's
◼
►
like a growl ya around
◼
►
it should be like growl in the way that
◼
►
they've done it in it should just be
◼
►
there any and will be visible and you if
◼
►
you're looking at your phone you can't
◼
►
miss it it's there but it doesn't
◼
►
interrupt everything that's going on to
◼
►
too much of that would be a little
◼
►
android but but you know how you can
◼
►
choose when you get a notification
◼
►
center you can choose like nine and by
◼
►
the way what a mess you know having me
◼
►
on the show another time working just
◼
►
wine and I got so much to worry about
◼
►
what you don't let me before you keep on
◼
►
me to stop and do it yeah we have energy
◼
►
everything we talked about that you like
◼
►
I do I think you're gonna like this one
◼
►
okay i want to tell you about Launch
◼
►
Center pro from our friends at appt
◼
►
cubby i'm predicting that you've heard
◼
►
it's an app for the iphone and I think
◼
►
it's one of those apps it's really
◼
►
really hard to describe it's sort of
◼
►
like in in theory maybe sort of like a
◼
►
quicksilver for iOS and i just wrote
◼
►
this the other day about the Chrome for
◼
►
iOS where if you want to fire off a
◼
►
bookmarklet and chrome for iOS you have
◼
►
to type it in their little omnibox you
◼
►
up there and type this box retype urls
◼
►
and search queries you can also type the
◼
►
name of one of your bookmarks and if
◼
►
it's a bookmark let then you can fire it
◼
►
off but whereas on safari users tap
◼
►
bookmarks and then there's a list of
◼
►
your bookmarks so tap tap
◼
►
you've done it on iOS I like to tap I
◼
►
don't like the night I was when you and
◼
►
your little short piece i was telling
◼
►
with you I thought I open chrome and was
◼
►
completely perplexed right and I like
◼
►
where I would go I rely very heavily on
◼
►
safari I have a very carefully crafted
◼
►
series of bookmarking to show up first
◼
►
exactly like it's like I've made my own
◼
►
little interface to Safari which is like
◼
►
the top six bookmarklets in my bookmarks
◼
►
list which do things and I know exactly
◼
►
i can almost navigate by this
◼
►
that's without even looking I use on the
◼
►
mac i use launch bar which is you know
◼
►
competitive quicksilver's Alfred's
◼
►
another one and these are these things
◼
►
where you'd fire them up you type
◼
►
something and hit return Launch Center
◼
►
pro is the same thing in theory for iOS
◼
►
but instead of firing it and typing
◼
►
something you fire it and you tap
◼
►
something and it's all customizable you
◼
►
can configure it for the shortcuts you
◼
►
need and the idea is that you're going
◼
►
to put it somewhere where it's super
◼
►
I think it's really honestly I think
◼
►
it's intended to be in the doc it's
◼
►
supposed to be one of your like top four
◼
►
things and what you can do is you could
◼
►
take something out like let's say your
◼
►
phone app take it out and create Launch
◼
►
Center shortcuts for the people you call
◼
►
the most frequently and then you go home
◼
►
screen launch center boom call Merlin
◼
►
because I call you I mean I probably
◼
►
call you three four times a day at least
◼
►
especially on weekends I actually
◼
►
there's only one thing that's
◼
►
frustrating about this app which is that
◼
►
you have to launch it at all right
◼
►
because once it's open there's nothing
◼
►
the closest i can think of is not funny
◼
►
i like a lot of people like I use search
◼
►
on iOS like I would Quicksilver like I'm
◼
►
forever I don't like flipping around so
◼
►
like if I know I want to get to
◼
►
something and I filled every screen I
◼
►
got to that point where I can't see all
◼
►
my apps you know what i mean so i'll
◼
►
flip over to search and type in some
◼
►
letters and that pulls up a nap that's
◼
►
great but the thing Launch Center I
◼
►
don't hijack your thing here but I
◼
►
really been using this app and it's
◼
►
amazing you're right you going to
◼
►
customize but it's not even it's not
◼
►
even just a launcher it's and your pride
◼
►
getting to this but what's amazing is
◼
►
you can go in and with a click you could
◼
►
do things like create an item in a
◼
►
calendar-like all agenda create an item
◼
►
with this location create an item with
◼
►
this default title so like
◼
►
daddy-daughter time is is a that's a
◼
►
button i click that you can then you can
◼
►
also have putting the clipboard or put
◼
►
in a contact name or put in input like
◼
►
manual input and make stuff like
◼
►
creating an OmniFocus task dialing a
◼
►
number sending a message to this person
◼
►
it's got little variables it's a little
◼
►
bit limited but it's growing and you can
◼
►
it's aight i think it's a terrific app a
◼
►
special note just for you and
◼
►
upcoming version 1.03 and at the top of
◼
►
their list text expander support you and
◼
►
Errol attack spinners and it works in
◼
►
the applique can explode text and
◼
►
I think it's going to explode
◼
►
TextExpander shortcuts gonna that would
◼
►
be that would be magic it you just have
◼
►
to see it and it also i have to admit I
◼
►
was very skeptical and this is from our
◼
►
friends at apco bead David Bernard is
◼
►
sort of the pool bar over there and he's
◼
►
he's a great guy i've linked to many
◼
►
times from during far but he's also very
◼
►
open about his iOS experiences he's
◼
►
documents you know pretty much open
◼
►
kimono the financial aspects of being in
◼
►
indy iOS developer and he sort of
◼
►
admitted that launch center was sort of
◼
►
just under just a little like scratching
◼
►
his own niche idea and it's turned into
◼
►
a big hit for them i think it's going to
◼
►
get the top of some a lot of these lists
◼
►
in the appstore afternoon when i first
◼
►
heard it I didn't even think it was
◼
►
possible because it seems like that sort
◼
►
of extending the system type of utility
◼
►
isn't really possible and i'll say what
◼
►
it seems like it seems like one of those
◼
►
apps that goes unlock your screen with a
◼
►
gesture or you don't mean one of those
◼
►
after like use your fingerprint and it's
◼
►
totally not that that's why it's got one
◼
►
star reviews it seems like it's one it
◼
►
seems like one of those and I'm saying
◼
►
it's not this but there's all these apps
◼
►
that get on the top ten the with a joke
◼
►
it seems like a joke and when I open
◼
►
this thing up i thought oh haha how
◼
►
funny is that click here to add an army
◼
►
focus task with an input thing or and
◼
►
it's hard to explain this except it's
◼
►
it's getting i would put it up with
◼
►
maybe why don't you know yeah you know I
◼
►
don't understand computers i would put
◼
►
it up with one password and text
◼
►
expander in the oh my god how did they
◼
►
get away with something that's useful
◼
►
right because there's so and I don't
◼
►
know how this is working but more apps
◼
►
seem to get added to this we
◼
►
yes it's great to be able to launch the
◼
►
app I don't know if it's fun being clear
◼
►
you can have preset stuff if you do
◼
►
stuff all the time it's all in there
◼
►
it's all in this is why i say the only
◼
►
thing is frustrating having to launch it
◼
►
I i wish it was open all the time in the
◼
►
same way that you use a full-time so i
◼
►
hijacked your and that's alright it's
◼
►
really i mean i've really you
◼
►
did you tell me this was going to be the
◼
►
sponsor did I know this no you did not
◼
►
know this is all from my heart is on top
◼
►
secret I don't tell anybody I spring the
◼
►
sponsors on on the guest of the show
◼
►
see that's where you got to make people
◼
►
wait for it exactly but I mean I I'm
◼
►
just telling you as merlin mann former
◼
►
productivity guru I i think this is
◼
►
really useful and if there's some way
◼
►
that you guys keep that in nebulous
◼
►
notes that would be really awesome but
◼
►
launched a text file with this stuff in
◼
►
it if you just think it's one of the
◼
►
things like text expander and i am an
◼
►
alternate text and rapper like me want
◼
►
to use text expander you feel like a
◼
►
sucker to to not use it i find myself
◼
►
gravitating toward a nap i will write an
◼
►
email in nebulous names just because
◼
►
it's got all the stuff I one in it and
◼
►
in this instance I mean I see this
◼
►
applet some very interesting places as
◼
►
long as it can that get away with it
◼
►
well one of the things that really takes
◼
►
advantage of and I think that the the
◼
►
heart and soul of the launch center pro
◼
►
is this these URLs that app support and
◼
►
I think it's most people don't know
◼
►
about this even people like nerds and
◼
►
people who listen to our shows don't
◼
►
know that on iOS really the only way one
◼
►
app can talk to another is through
◼
►
custom URLs and so like you could have a
◼
►
note-taking app like by word or
◼
►
something like that where by word has a
◼
►
special URL instead of HTTP colon slash
◼
►
slash it's like byword a / x dash by
◼
►
word I don't know what it is but Launch
◼
►
Center is programmed with knows about
◼
►
all of these hundreds maybe I don't know
◼
►
but doesn't say anything in the dingus
◼
►
hear their sites that will show you
◼
►
write that there are so many like if you
◼
►
put one password at one time for colon
◼
►
slash slash the it works it's an earl
◼
►
scheme just like would work on the web
◼
►
or as a lot of people don't know on your
◼
►
Mac as well right and so Launch Center
◼
►
he knows about these things it already
◼
►
knows the format for these things so you
◼
►
fill them in so you you can do stuff
◼
►
it's really surprising the shortcuts you
◼
►
can make so if you always want to fire
◼
►
off a new note in this one app for
◼
►
boom here to taps away one tap on launch
◼
►
center one tap on your custom shortcut
◼
►
that you've made for the thing that you
◼
►
do the most frequently it's a great app
◼
►
you can visit apka b.com for more
◼
►
information and they have a demo video
◼
►
or just search for launch center in the
◼
►
app store things like buck 99 290 and
◼
►
something like that i don't want your ad
◼
►
to Longwood maybe after we're done i'll
◼
►
give you a couple of these because I got
◼
►
some good ones in here
◼
►
yeah I knew you would love this app
◼
►
because you're the master of stuff like
◼
►
this how this you going to buy one of
◼
►
those stupid is you don't have the
◼
►
answers over but you know you go on but
◼
►
when the stupid flashlight apps
◼
►
how about this you hit a button called
◼
►
flashlight and it hits your LED doing a
◼
►
hundred percent Houthis have used toggle
◼
►
here talking with giant like so you want
◼
►
to keep your lady up or or I'm sorry
◼
►
your bachelors partner and so you hit
◼
►
toggle and you have a selection of two
◼
►
ranges you pick a number between one and
◼
►
a hundred and they want to hit toggle
◼
►
change the parental how this works John
◼
►
Gruber you hit toggle and suddenly my
◼
►
screen changes to 2% brightness I hit it
◼
►
again it goes to like what I keep it on
◼
►
sixty sixty percent brightness but you
◼
►
go in and you pick what that is
◼
►
I'm and that sounds weird but like how I
◼
►
mean think about this this is one that I
◼
►
loved on my HTC android that i missed
◼
►
here is the ability like flipping and
◼
►
you flip bluetooth on and off or
◼
►
whatever but you have to go change your
◼
►
your embed your ipad i can't get an ipad
◼
►
dark enough to not keep my wife awake
◼
►
but in this instance yeah but you're
◼
►
saying and where somebody hit dropbox
◼
►
you go do a thing it's like it'sit's
◼
►
crazy and then anything to do with
◼
►
contacts this is going to obviate 50
◼
►
different no offense to anybody else but
◼
►
it'll obviate like five other apps that
◼
►
you might be using for this hockey stuff
◼
►
because you can just say make a phone
◼
►
call to this person with this one click
◼
►
I'm sorry I'm going onto i'm going to
◼
►
try i'd i'd you went real fast you got
◼
►
real Merlin either but powerful thing is
◼
►
fascinating it's you hit this button and
◼
►
it toggles your screen brightness
◼
►
between like super bright you need it
◼
►
because the sun shining in your eyes not
◼
►
going to see it or really really dim
◼
►
like it's the like you said like it's
◼
►
your in bed it's nighttime and
◼
►
somebody's next you trying to sleep two
◼
►
taps away instead of fishing into the
◼
►
settings app and going down to the end
◼
►
if you're a nerd you pick axe and why
◼
►
the room who knew that at third party
◼
►
house tour and how that's possible can
◼
►
change that because apparently because
◼
►
the brightness setting has a you
◼
►
Apple has a URL that developers can use
◼
►
a URL scheme for changing the screen
◼
►
brightness I didn't even know that was
◼
►
possible not you know this isn't
◼
►
jailbreak stuff this is right there in
◼
►
the app store it's great that I've got a
◼
►
bunch the only Calendar apps on my
◼
►
favorite calendar app right now is
◼
►
called calendars it's really really
◼
►
great but the other thing that I also
◼
►
really like one called agenda and so I
◼
►
got one here when i click on this i
◼
►
so you've got these are described you
◼
►
got a grid of what's four times three
◼
►
you got 12 of these buttons on the
◼
►
screen but then you can have the
◼
►
equivalent of a folder by clicking and
◼
►
you don't have to double click on it you
◼
►
click it and it pops straight up so its
◼
►
thumb thumb thumb and you're just doing
◼
►
your thing and so it will go and create
◼
►
an item and you know whatever I have a
◼
►
let go create like time for me and my
◼
►
kid to hangout hit that it doesn't
◼
►
create that you can create with a
◼
►
certain location and will eat it's there
◼
►
and like any of this life hack nonsense
◼
►
if you do anything more than once
◼
►
automated like red shell script for
◼
►
whatever in this instance it's all baked
◼
►
in here the only two downsides yes you
◼
►
have to launch it would be nice for open
◼
►
all the time but you know that's a joke
◼
►
John when I say that I'm saying I wish
◼
►
this were bound to my home key but the
◼
►
other thing is i could spend all day
◼
►
making these because they are so useful
◼
►
and they're adding new ones all the time
◼
►
yeah and it's a very quickly be nice it
◼
►
would be nice if you could set it to
◼
►
launch on double tap home or something
◼
►
like that or triple tap home like a way
◼
►
that you could boom absolutely yeah
◼
►
anybody's great at creating new textile
◼
►
Launch Center pro in the App Store you
◼
►
can do it all well is a new show next
◼
►
week what you'll have your back and
◼
►
we'll talk more about our Long Center
◼
►
shortcut enjoy that do these do i like
◼
►
to wait for time mercies do i know i
◼
►
think ideally it to you
◼
►
oh yeah i do use that usually just
◼
►
talked to the lady usually no no I do
◼
►
use Doody tue i use that I learned about
◼
►
it from your stupid site i think it's
◼
►
that became the nerd go to timer app has
◼
►
got natural language and stuff so here
◼
►
like let's say for example I steep in my
◼
►
you know you know how important it is to
◼
►
have a friendly way to make coffee and
◼
►
everything about this i dunno about that
◼
►
have an aeropress and I do them doing
◼
►
the inverse we should talk about this on
◼
►
our third show i do the inverse but you
◼
►
know I'm doing two minutes now which is
◼
►
a little crazy but I will forget about
◼
►
that sounds nuts I know myself well
◼
►
enough to know I will forget so I've got
◼
►
a two-minute timer in usability Launch
◼
►
hit it and I get a 10-minute time boom
◼
►
do that no no I know anyway now and i
◼
►
use do for my weekly reminders like
◼
►
friday afternoon i have a do that goes
◼
►
off to remind me to thank this week's
◼
►
daring fireball RSS sponsor by a handle
◼
►
of vodka exactly or the trash wednesday
◼
►
night trash on with do that way I i do
◼
►
that in OmniFocus but yeah that's never
◼
►
want to think about this but you don't
◼
►
want that stuff in your calendar either
◼
►
you know I mean like you don't
◼
►
absolutely calendar you I just want it
◼
►
at ten o'clock at night on wednesday
◼
►
just tell me to take the trash out and
◼
►
do do has nice little things like for
◼
►
this week because wednesday was not
◼
►
trash day because of the great us
◼
►
holiday then there's a one-button it
◼
►
just says tomorrow same time
◼
►
this news is awesome right and it's just
◼
►
one tap and it's done and it doesn't
◼
►
give you any of this stuff like hey you
◼
►
wanted this is a recurring thing you
◼
►
want to change this for all of them or
◼
►
just this one you just hit hit tomorrow
◼
►
and then it bugs me tomorrow
◼
►
this is the example I always bring up
◼
►
with this I think we've talked I'm
◼
►
positive we talked about this before
◼
►
it's like me bird feed which was a
◼
►
twitter app then by husband Evan right
◼
►
yeah and it got me I'm picked up by
◼
►
grizzly which may have got a little
◼
►
weird but that was me that Apple's way
◼
►
whereby got a little weird you may think
◼
►
you've got trashed but that's a shame
◼
►
but is that what letters little like
◼
►
yeah well what they did was the funniest
◼
►
thing about you got to open a woman when
◼
►
you're not gonna make buzz-buzz can have
◼
►
a blog post you know where the funniest
◼
►
thing about that though is that it went
◼
►
in the strangest possible way which was
◼
►
that it was say nothing about the
◼
►
usability of the app just take a look at
◼
►
it was exquisite you did not see
◼
►
anything you didn't need to see it was
◼
►
he needed to see if your power user you
◼
►
knew where it was and if you weren't
◼
►
Nevin Morgan is a designer he now works
◼
►
at panic alongside cable sasser I mean
◼
►
that that's the caliber of work that
◼
►
Nevin does I mean this we're talking
◼
►
about guy who went on to work i don't
◼
►
think he worked at panic it maybe he did
◼
►
but anyway he is bi world-class UI
◼
►
designer and the app looked like it was
◼
►
exquisite and then the they sold it to
◼
►
brazilian grizzly came out
◼
►
the version that looks like me and you
◼
►
designed it you know like like on a
◼
►
cocktail napkin like it wasn't bad per
◼
►
I mean it was you know but it was like
◼
►
they raced all of the exquisiteness and
◼
►
it was just sort of genericized you know
◼
►
I mean like if me and you sat down and
◼
►
end and fired up photoshop and spend a
◼
►
week trying to make a twitter app we
◼
►
could make like what brisley came out
◼
►
with and then we would hand it to
◼
►
someone like Nevin and say now make it
◼
►
look actually good i think they went the
◼
►
other way like they know they gave us
◼
►
like giving Natalie Portman trucker cap
◼
►
is your movement moving in the wrong
◼
►
direction Johnny but it was not enough
◼
►
for me now are you are you a tweak tweak
◼
►
pot user i use the tweet but the sweet
◼
►
spot for me is another one that paul guy
◼
►
seems a little aggravated sometimes on
◼
►
the internet but had I love the sweet
◼
►
spot he will either he's a pretty little
◼
►
yeah but i really like the sweet spot in
◼
►
those gestures you know there's that is
◼
►
the st. John I've always loved on max I
◼
►
guess apple stuff in general which is
◼
►
this magical thing where I'll do
◼
►
something and maybe not even realize i
◼
►
what i was doing and something happens
◼
►
that i didn't realize i expected to
◼
►
happen and it worked and suddenly it
◼
►
feels like a moment of magic and that
◼
►
happens sometimes now in apps will do
◼
►
like I'll go you know what I'm going to
◼
►
try and swipe to the right and see if
◼
►
this takes me back i took me back to a
◼
►
list that's so freaking cool the first
◼
►
time I had motives plugged into my
◼
►
macbook pro and I i we forgot that I
◼
►
wasn't on my iPhone and hit mute and
◼
►
we'll wait a minute commute worked on my
◼
►
macbook pro you know what I mean that
◼
►
that's that's so magic when you don't
◼
►
have to sit there and read documentation
◼
►
for that stuff it's just it was a term
◼
►
for this new user experience right the
◼
►
thing you've most expect to happen when
◼
►
yeah there is a term but we'll just call
◼
►
it the thing that you most expect to
◼
►
happen but they also but the other thing
◼
►
is you know and wipe creating this and
◼
►
stuff like a bar like if I wanted
◼
►
somebody said something nice about
◼
►
Roderick on the line and I want to
◼
►
retune it all that you do a long hold on
◼
►
the reetou button and ask you which
◼
►
account you want to that's really that's
◼
►
really that's really clever because
◼
►
you're not going on the modality stuff I
◼
►
gotta change you have to go over here i
◼
►
got re-enter a thingy
◼
►
yes I i do understand that there's a lot
◼
►
of people who think that the whole tap
◼
►
bots you I aesthetic is too heavy-handed
◼
►
and because it is i mean it's way over
◼
►
the top and you know the whole robot
◼
►
themed and you know I turn off the
◼
►
sounds like the sounds the only app i
◼
►
keep that nonsense on I sometimes I get
◼
►
but sometimes i'll fire up a new device
◼
►
and I'd forget I don't turn off the
◼
►
sound I don't mind them but keyboard
◼
►
clicking exactly that's a rookie
◼
►
oh man the keyboard clicking oh I love
◼
►
the keyboard clicking you don't use
◼
►
keyboard clicking and iOS you really
◼
►
don't you you're screwing with me now i
◼
►
do use it and i have one time and i
◼
►
would type 40 times faster if i had the
◼
►
clicking but it just feels so douchey to
◼
►
me to have that on me i really need it I
◼
►
huh mine's been getting bad you know
◼
►
it's adi have you gotten this like I'm
◼
►
ready to do a reset because I now get
◼
►
auto corrections of things I've typed
◼
►
incorrectly before i'll try to type
◼
►
anything and go like four loop you know
◼
►
that that's another one of those things
◼
►
that I can't believe they haven't gotten
◼
►
the iOS yet is that you please help me
◼
►
back because I i seriously listen to us
◼
►
good what is that no I just did that the
◼
►
I'm so angry about so many things apple
◼
►
stupid right now I thought it was actual
◼
►
letters from actual actual actual
◼
►
readers actually mom and I'll here now
◼
►
why can't you go in there and in
◼
►
why can't you go settings I don't know
◼
►
keyboard and then have a list of the
◼
►
auto corrections and you could add you
◼
►
know and and and fix the ones that get
◼
►
in it still seems like you can totally
◼
►
tell you why not you can groove a bad
◼
►
autocorrect right you let an autocorrect
◼
►
go once or twice and then all of a
◼
►
sudden it's in there and there's nothing
◼
►
well I did you get this and I don't know
◼
►
where this is coming from
◼
►
hi this is this either at first I
◼
►
thought it was laggy pneus or me being
◼
►
hitting the wrong target
◼
►
have you gotten the thing where it goes
◼
►
so I do this thing sometimes I want to
◼
►
speak in a jokey vernacular and so I'll
◼
►
go hang in ' right and so i type Hannah
◼
►
posture he goes out you mean hanging '
◼
►
I'm like no I absolutely do not mean
◼
►
' and so I hit the thing nothing happens
◼
►
don't you been hanging up on and hit it
◼
►
again three times you get three shots
◼
►
right i hit three times i hit on the
◼
►
exit not on the Exile hit every every
◼
►
possible target on the goddamn phone and
◼
►
then it says I've changed this to hangar
◼
►
apart if you ever get this without you
◼
►
can't what is it trying is it is it
◼
►
trying to grow with me
◼
►
what why what why I wanted to let me be
◼
►
wrong i don't know what you do but you
◼
►
know the Phenom it didn't used to do
◼
►
this for me and now it does and i think
◼
►
it's become sentient and I don't like it
◼
►
it has at least given up on correcting
◼
►
swears that did the trick
◼
►
duck you know what when you address
◼
►
contact caii did I I light but I was it
◼
►
works for me now that I've taken them
◼
►
out of my address book
◼
►
so here's a fun one for it used to work
◼
►
for me until my contacts up speaking
◼
►
perfect i lost i recently lost nothing
◼
►
that bad on me for trying to do more
◼
►
than one thing i don't know why i think
◼
►
i can sync with more than one thing I
◼
►
got all my name's all the Twitter
◼
►
addresses work fine but I've lost tons
◼
►
of phone numbers and addresses for no
◼
►
reason that I can understand they just
◼
►
went away last week you guys went away
◼
►
you got Delmon I get settlement you know
◼
►
my favorite the ones i think
◼
►
intelligence with my favorites a couple
◼
►
years ago I had 14 copies of Jason Santa
◼
►
Santa Santa Santa Santa Santa Santa
◼
►
Santa Santa Maria every time it's think
◼
►
that an extra Santa I blame him you
◼
►
don't need three names that seems
◼
►
excessive to me what the hell did that
◼
►
we should talk about this on another
◼
►
showcase this is probably too long
◼
►
already but this is this is this is the
◼
►
thing what you're describing
◼
►
yes I wish I had that I wish I could do
◼
►
that on the desktop i wish there was a
◼
►
desktop dingus where I could go in and
◼
►
say here's all the audit you know what I
◼
►
mean like I know that sounds ridiculous
◼
►
right why why is it that i have to
◼
►
re-enter those hobbled iOS abbreviations
◼
►
on every device i sit there with two
◼
►
devices open to try to make a matchup
◼
►
that should be synced through iCloud
◼
►
that seems like a no-brainer but then
◼
►
what now going to go into the going to
◼
►
the experience on iOS of having to do
◼
►
that you get this long ugly list that's
◼
►
totally unwieldy and that's the problem
◼
►
notifications like tell me how a normal
◼
►
person who's not a nerd with time
◼
►
to kill gets all the notifications the
◼
►
way they want because here's what
◼
►
happens you got a new app
◼
►
hey this thing would like to give you
◼
►
notifications well of course I want
◼
►
notifications I'm not an idiot
◼
►
you hit it and suddenly you're finding
◼
►
out that somebody just leveled up on
◼
►
food book or whatever him now you know
◼
►
Jonas has an old 3gs center right now
◼
►
they play the games on and he's always
◼
►
get notifications from the stupid games
◼
►
he plays like you know you installed it
◼
►
gets a new game a ninety-nine cents and
◼
►
he okay's the the get notifications and
◼
►
it's stupid stuff like you know you
◼
►
haven't haven't played we miss you
◼
►
you're eligible for a smart bomb
◼
►
yeah there's no bullets available in the
◼
►
cowboy game and I mean and it's like I I
◼
►
go I see that I go in there and I just
◼
►
turned it all I turn it all off its like
◼
►
no you don't you don't get to send text
◼
►
messages to make it telling mrs. no I
◼
►
don't want to rehash my extensive lining
◼
►
i did imac power users a couple weeks
◼
►
ago because i went into a pretty long
◼
►
thing on this but what I mean this is
◼
►
one part that I wish that I cloud I
◼
►
think could do a better job with ok
◼
►
the basic value proposition of the Apple
◼
►
products the the way that it's evolving
◼
►
in a way that I like and I'm happy with
◼
►
is that they are trying on some level to
◼
►
simplify the experience right i mean you
◼
►
know you go in you by your new iOS
◼
►
device you don't need to own a mac like
◼
►
that's really cool in theory right then
◼
►
how do you delete large files
◼
►
how do you know how much space is left
◼
►
on your phone we all obviously you drill
◼
►
down into settings and going to usage
◼
►
and then go in there and you delete all
◼
►
of your music or you keep all of your
◼
►
music like that's a little ham-fisted
◼
►
for me but the problem is so striking
◼
►
that instance like it screw the idea of
◼
►
just owning a phone is great but like
◼
►
well let's take the total corner case
◼
►
let's say you're super rich guy you're
◼
►
super duper rich guy who just retired
◼
►
and you say you know what I'm going to
◼
►
buy one of these iphones when I was
◼
►
tricked out what I can
◼
►
I'm gonna buy all my favorite the
◼
►
loneliest monk records i'm going to get
◼
►
a 720p of my granddaughter taking our
◼
►
pretty soon your phone's full you walk
◼
►
into the foundation meeting you like a
◼
►
dick like how do you how do you deal
◼
►
with all that stuff on there without
◼
►
either going through a million fiddly
◼
►
swipes or buy a mac i actually think
◼
►
android does a better job of this where
◼
►
first the first run you mean II well
◼
►
that you the basic idea is you buy a new
◼
►
iOS device that's just a an iphone and
◼
►
you give it your iCloud ID and it knows
◼
►
some stuff about you and it will set up
◼
►
some stuff and you can do stuff like go
◼
►
to the App Store and seed apps you
◼
►
already own that aren't installed on the
◼
►
phone and it also offer to let you back
◼
►
up from an iCloud backup but everything
◼
►
doesn't come with that it seems to me it
◼
►
doesn't seem like you get everything if
◼
►
you don't really do a restart now my
◼
►
I've done I've had two unsuccessful
◼
►
restores and one successful restore the
◼
►
first time it was successful which
◼
►
seemed like Disney Matt
◼
►
seemed like Disney Matt
◼
►
dick but i did a restore of my eye when
◼
►
I got an ipad 20 you know and the thing
◼
►
is John this is the Albatross we must
◼
►
constantly mention this to people I'm
◼
►
click to encrypt in itunes because i
◼
►
love your passwords why is that not
◼
►
default i have no you will not get your
◼
►
settings and let you have that turned on
◼
►
its a marker trick but we've been clear
◼
►
about what this is very flattered when
◼
►
interacting you're going you know I got
◼
►
it when you back up and iOS device to
◼
►
your Mac or presumably a windows machine
◼
►
not to iCloud but to your Mac and I say
◼
►
do both i do the iCloud backups and the
◼
►
mac backups because I figured you know
◼
►
can't lose with you my daughter
◼
►
suspenders yeah but when you back up to
◼
►
your Mac if you encrypt the backup even
◼
►
if you are not worried about somebody
◼
►
snooping into your backup even if you
◼
►
are completely certain that even if
◼
►
you're using the the file vault and you
◼
►
feel like you're covered because your
◼
►
whole disk is encrypted so why encrypt
◼
►
your backup you gotta click that button
◼
►
and encrypt your back up with a password
◼
►
because then then and only then your
◼
►
backup book includes your passwords and
◼
►
then when you restore from that backup
◼
►
you don't have to enter every single
◼
►
email accounts password again which
◼
►
could have been so much easier to
◼
►
explain if there was a check box that
◼
►
said remember my settings right and then
◼
►
? for help i can tell you I down the
◼
►
exact same as you where I was went years
◼
►
on iOS without doing that because I was
◼
►
not concerned about the the security I
◼
►
anybody who had access to my Mac what's
◼
►
the long way to phrase it i mean right
◼
►
it's that it's really it's really
◼
►
I mean because that's what you're the
◼
►
value of that that seems like a nerd bit
◼
►
to flip right right but it's absolutely
◼
►
you know when it when I want to save my
◼
►
butt was a friend of friend who's not me
◼
►
was on iOS 5 beta lion beta and atv data
◼
►
atv tube8 all at the same time no sorry
◼
►
originally anyway the point being i was
◼
►
constantly restoring constantly
◼
►
constantly constantly restoring I mean
◼
►
if you're probably on the 5 beta do you
◼
►
remember when was like oh my god
◼
►
suddenly Wi-Fi sinking worked
◼
►
yeah and you're like this is the most of
◼
►
it and then suddenly one day not only
◼
►
did it stop working but it wouldn't take
◼
►
a tethered did you get this one where it
◼
►
not only stop backing upper 60s me stop
◼
►
not only stopped syncing with itunes but
◼
►
you couldn't reach either it thought it
◼
►
was it like a dead other somebody else's
◼
►
phone so you have to do a full restore
◼
►
so God God save you you better have a
◼
►
full backup of that with your passwords
◼
►
or you're gonna be you're gonna lose
◼
►
half a day every time that happens so I
◼
►
mean that that's an example though of
◼
►
that that's up there will be a piece of
◼
►
you I what I'm trying to say though is
◼
►
like in the past in itunes as flawed and
◼
►
goofy as itunes is at least I always had
◼
►
a sense that there's a folder somewhere
◼
►
we're all my mp3 is live and let me be
◼
►
clear i love itunes match I have become
◼
►
a big fan of itunes match in a lot of
◼
►
ways but we're losing our sense of place
◼
►
with Apple devices and that's what's
◼
►
that's one thing starting to frustrate
◼
►
we're getting a collision of the
◼
►
embarrassment of riches of all the great
◼
►
stuff we can have my gosh you're kidding
◼
►
me i throw in some hundred 28k version
◼
►
of the song and now it's just everywhere
◼
►
like how is that allowed to happen
◼
►
that's amazing but if I pull down if
◼
►
that rich guy goes or gal goes and pulls
◼
►
down everything loneliest monk record
◼
►
256k get whatever those are big files
◼
►
right they bottle that music where's
◼
►
that music live well obviously just go
◼
►
to iTunes so you can delete and
◼
►
redownload it is that's super obvious to
◼
►
most people do you think i don't know i
◼
►
don't know that it is and i still think
◼
►
i think that the roots of iOS being
◼
►
without any iCloud we're just being
◼
►
something that syncs to your Mac that it
◼
►
still is not shaking those roots
◼
►
I don't think it's as clear that that
◼
►
the stuff economically lives in our did
◼
►
you know to put it is certainly not
◼
►
they're certainly not one correct way to
◼
►
do it anymore either in theory or
◼
►
practice um I mean the iCloud sinking is
◼
►
great arm again now I mean there's all
◼
►
kinds of things world that the trust is
◼
►
not there for me I still don't
◼
►
understand why I can't enter this one
◼
►
email address in 3c I messages in this
◼
►
one place it's in use under the device
◼
►
ok what devices that we're like I don't
◼
►
know how to fix that and I went to
◼
►
college and stuff like I think there's a
◼
►
lot of stuff that's pretty confusing but
◼
►
this the collision that I think is
◼
►
interesting from a John Gruber
◼
►
standpoint is that it is so great that
◼
►
we've got all this stuff the fact that I
◼
►
is amazing and the fact you know I like
◼
►
Dropbox in some ways which is better
◼
►
it is amazing that that works but now
◼
►
you've got this collision of oh my gosh
◼
►
abbreviations on iOS are great but if
◼
►
they don't sink I've got to go reenter
◼
►
those I mean yeah why don't they sink
◼
►
where they supposedly is it a bug or I
◼
►
don't get that I don't know it'sit's for
◼
►
now though it certainly doesn't make me
◼
►
worry about the future of text expander
◼
►
at least in my head like but but here's
◼
►
the problem with that okay so that's
◼
►
frustrating i understand apples great
◼
►
about rolling stuff up when wrong stuff
◼
►
out when it's ready so I get that you
◼
►
don't overwhelm people with all these
◼
►
different things but first of all it
◼
►
I'm glad it's there but it's tacky i
◼
►
would have to manually keep this updated
◼
►
all over the place but look at every app
◼
►
I use instant cast nebulous notes
◼
►
nebulous macros I can export and import
◼
►
through dropbox to anywhere I can spit
◼
►
out my instant cast as opml and move it
◼
►
anywhere right and and this is this is
◼
►
where I get my tinfoil hat on is the
◼
►
that collision of the power of what this
◼
►
can do the large you know the ability to
◼
►
have these high quality files you know
◼
►
the 720p videos add up
◼
►
you know what I mean all that stuff then
◼
►
colliding with ok now how do I handle
◼
►
having all these notifications
◼
►
that's a lot of bits to flip on a screen
◼
►
that sighs you know I mean like it's an
◼
►
interesting inflection point for Apple
◼
►
because as they try and make this more
◼
►
simple as they do add the sandboxing as
◼
►
they try and bring in this fatter middle
◼
►
part of the adoption curve i think these
◼
►
collisions are going to get interesting
◼
►
to watch and I'm sure they will in the
◼
►
meantime fix them even as new collisions
◼
►
come up but did you see that as a
◼
►
tension at all dude i'm afraid i don't
◼
►
know if i'm posting this question right
◼
►
now I'm not sure you are there you've
◼
►
got a lot of great stuff out there
◼
►
they're trying to make it simple but
◼
►
they're trying to potentially introduce
◼
►
simplicity into something that is native
◼
►
yeah very where my music natives and how
◼
►
I not get this notification or even
◼
►
where your preferences live like in the
◼
►
old days it used to be real simple
◼
►
reason your preferences folder in Iowa
◼
►
you would well on the mac not on is
◼
►
because you never had access to the
◼
►
folders we're not even an iOS though I
◼
►
mean why increasingly I'm seeing
◼
►
preferences inside of that
◼
►
but there's still tons of times right by
◼
►
a nap and I buy a lot of apps and i'll
◼
►
open up and I'll go hm i can change some
◼
►
things in here but it feels like i can
◼
►
probably change more so what do i do i
◼
►
click the home button i go to settings
◼
►
and then I go discover that there's an
◼
►
area in there where I can change more
◼
►
and sometimes that is one more for the
◼
►
call it a radio button but one flip
◼
►
checkbox that will be reset cash it
◼
►
might just be that it might be huh
◼
►
or it might be something like good
◼
►
reader where you're like oh my god
◼
►
there's like 16 pages of preferences in
◼
►
here right and I don't feel like there's
◼
►
any kind of standard for is their
◼
►
standard for wear that stuff should go
◼
►
they used to say that used to be the big
◼
►
that the the guideline was that all
◼
►
settings go into settings app and that
◼
►
app shouldn't have settings and that's
◼
►
why did they might even still be in the
◼
►
head but nobody nobody crosses dead
◼
►
because there's too many settings that
◼
►
are to you don't want to you know like
◼
►
in in tweet bot on a per account basis
◼
►
you can set up a read it later service
◼
►
like Instapaper or pin board or image
◼
►
posting or yes shortening or meeting you
◼
►
can write I think you can mute hashtags
◼
►
and people on one account and not on
◼
►
another right and it would be
◼
►
infuriating if you had to go to the
◼
►
Settings up to do that you know it
◼
►
belongs in the app but my point though
◼
►
is more like in the old days if you want
◼
►
if you had two machines and to max and
◼
►
you want the exact same bbedit set up in
◼
►
both you knew what to do go to the one
◼
►
that set up the way you want to take the
◼
►
Preferences copying over to the other
◼
►
one put them in the Preferences folder
◼
►
and then boom you've got them now they
◼
►
wouldn't it wouldn't stay in sync but
◼
►
you could at least you knew that it
◼
►
wouldn't stay in sync right you know and
◼
►
you could start with a known good
◼
►
preferences file put it over on the
◼
►
other one and then you'd have those
◼
►
preferences you can't there's no way to
◼
►
do that in iOS like if you've got this
◼
►
you know you've got all these cool
◼
►
abbreviation set up on one device and
◼
►
now you've got this other device and you
◼
►
want those abbreviations will have to
◼
►
you you've got to sit there and type
◼
►
them all out by hand right
◼
►
yeah I hmm i don't know there's there's
◼
►
I guess the the tinfoil hat part for me
◼
►
is that the house a lack of vision
◼
►
because there's certainly a lot of
◼
►
vision happening but there's certainly a
◼
►
lot of ambition going on with all of
◼
►
these things but it's a weird universe
◼
►
where is a strange universe to me wear
◼
►
something like the hacky abbreviation
◼
►
stuff sets sits alongside the ability to
◼
►
restore and ipad um and where I don't
◼
►
know I just feel like I don't have this
◼
►
total level of confidence like you just
◼
►
said I mean you sort of course back in
◼
►
the day you could just take extensions
◼
►
out and restart and that would work i'm
◼
►
happy to give that up it's tough runs
◼
►
you know what i mean i don't know i
◼
►
don't know what that is I don't know
◼
►
that's protected memory journaling
◼
►
whatever like I'm glad I don't have to
◼
►
deal with that stuff anymore personally
◼
►
but at the same time the implementation
◼
►
of this simplicity combined with things
◼
►
like sandbox and gives me the fear in
◼
►
terms of how I actually work and how
◼
►
much I don't mean to whine I know people
◼
►
will say I'm whining about Apple but you
◼
►
know what I'm saying like it'sit's still
◼
►
like when i open up txt edit and it
◼
►
gives me a dialog box
◼
►
I'm sorry one of her friend is not me
◼
►
opens text edit on mountain lion and get
◼
►
to the dialog box for the cloud it's
◼
►
like what like I don't you know what I
◼
►
mean that that feels really perplexing
◼
►
to me kinda awesome though in a
◼
►
different way if you're not if you just
◼
►
come at it as like with like a fresh set
◼
►
of eyes I could see that particularly
◼
►
being true for you as for example of ppl
◼
►
a user right because you're like you
◼
►
ever sit there and go oh what should I
◼
►
open this text at txt file in you I'm
◼
►
getting very rarely it's going to be
◼
►
beheaded or the terminal making right
◼
►
you're not right i mean if you open a
◼
►
text file is going to be at it right and
◼
►
so having all of your cloudy stuff i
◼
►
clouded stuff in that one pp edit barrel
◼
►
is okay with you yeah but that's you
◼
►
know that's the for somebody like me and
◼
►
you drop boxes the better solution right
◼
►
everything i doing BB
◼
►
that you saved in a dropbox folder not
◼
►
you know I'm not really looking i don't
◼
►
bbedit ever supports iCloud I don't
◼
►
think i would I doubt I would run an app
◼
►
store version of BB edit and the only
◼
►
wonder if we'll ever have to don't you
◼
►
wonder I mean I that I can't see I don't
◼
►
see where that that's not coming i'm not
◼
►
trying to be slippery slope guy but I
◼
►
don't caii getting hard for me to
◼
►
imagine a future where that's not the
◼
►
way you're at least supposed to do it
◼
►
yeah it's that I think I wrote about
◼
►
this recently where there's some weird
◼
►
carrot-and-stick action and I don't
◼
►
think apple is ever ever going to i
◼
►
really don't i think it's so long as
◼
►
there is a mac that there will not there
◼
►
will not be a everything has to come
◼
►
through the app store rule the
◼
►
gatekeeper thing is a lot of work and
◼
►
they're trying to really trying to do
◼
►
the right thing which is allow
◼
►
third-party apps that didn't go through
◼
►
the app store to have the security and
◼
►
sort of peace of mind that
◼
►
hey it's not malware or and it's not
◼
►
going to do anything it's not supposed
◼
►
to do and if it is Apple can revoke this
◼
►
sort of certification and and keep it
◼
►
from running elsewhere again a great
◼
►
great stuff and I really don't think
◼
►
that that's a half step towards making
◼
►
everybody do the app store i really
◼
►
think it's a half step towards hey let's
◼
►
bring some of these advantage of the of
◼
►
the app store to other apps the way that
◼
►
they're doing it other with is to add
◼
►
these new features that you can only get
◼
►
through the app store and if the
◼
►
features are compelling enough
◼
►
everybody's going to opt-in you know you
◼
►
said as much in your article if you want
◼
►
i think is yes that's feel like slider
◼
►
read but if you want to have icloud
◼
►
stuff you have to sell your it has to go
◼
►
through the app stores ever act right
◼
►
dense and a no and I can see there's
◼
►
good reasons for that beyond just being
◼
►
trying to get thirty percent of the
◼
►
revenue from the apps being sold it's
◼
►
not just about the money and I really
◼
►
you know financially the money that
◼
►
Apple get from the app store it's
◼
►
nothing to sneeze at but it right and
◼
►
I think the security thing is it is a
◼
►
great idea that's also right here it's
◼
►
about control they value they value the
◼
►
they value the money i mean that's you
◼
►
know they could you know the money from
◼
►
the app store probably doesn't even know
◼
►
if it covers the charitable
◼
►
contributions they that they do for the
◼
►
employees with the matching funds I mean
◼
►
it's just not that much money it's the
◼
►
control they want control more than they
◼
►
want more money they make all the money
◼
►
all the money comes from selling that
◼
►
the hardware whereby all I mean alright
◼
►
effectively oh yeah you know put a
◼
►
little asterisk there it's the control
◼
►
and it's the fact that hey we've got
◼
►
these dismiss these data centers and
◼
►
this is where all the iCloud stuff is
◼
►
sold and we control everything that's
◼
►
stored here we know everything now that
◼
►
you know that you can set you can email
◼
►
yourself a copy of anything so it's like
◼
►
you know in the email is served on their
◼
►
iCloud servers but they know that you
◼
►
know that's going through imap it's
◼
►
they're not going to so I don't mean it
◼
►
in that they control the content
◼
►
I just mean that they control the means
◼
►
so if every single app that wants to do
◼
►
read right to to iCloud has two they
◼
►
want to have control over that means it
◼
►
has to go through the app store so I
◼
►
understand that and for some apps its
◼
►
iCloud sinking is so compelling that
◼
►
they're going to go app store only I
◼
►
mean and speaking of barebone software
◼
►
that's what they're going to do with no
◼
►
Jimbo maybe have to write well I mean
◼
►
that the mobileme things right one of
◼
►
the most notorious examples i'm not know
◼
►
that they're notorious but that the one
◼
►
of the like the heartbreaking examples
◼
►
of they had this app that was working
◼
►
great for nerds right and now it's not
◼
►
as simple as just changing some few
◼
►
lines of code it's really it's a
◼
►
different API right right i mean and yea
◼
►
heartbreaking in the sense of an awful
◼
►
lot of of very smart guys and long-term
◼
►
Apple developers I mean honestly
◼
►
personal friends of mine also but you
◼
►
know just the good guys
◼
►
I mean I don't think there's anybody
◼
►
whether you use their apps or not nobody
◼
►
the little things about barebone
◼
►
software and things that there anything
◼
►
other than good guys at the buzzer
◼
►
burnin cycles on trying to keep well no
◼
►
no but it's the tragedy that mean again
◼
►
it's tragedy in terms of lost developer
◼
►
tragedy in terms of you know darker or
◼
►
something like that I you know I mean
◼
►
we're you know we're nerds but you know
◼
►
so keep it in perspective but no but the
◼
►
way you Jimbo we used to work with
◼
►
mobileme was fantastic it was like that
◼
►
it was the existence proof that mobileme
◼
►
actually wasn't a total garbage you know
◼
►
its reputation notwithstanding and in
◼
►
fact they actually the sinking that your
◼
►
jumbo did the mobileme like it it took
◼
►
out a ton of bugs in mobile knees sink
◼
►
service and it worked it absolutely
◼
►
worked i can vouch for that for you know
◼
►
a long time i wave i did to max both
◼
►
running Jimbo and sink through mobileme
◼
►
and I don't think I ever lost a
◼
►
keystroke you know and i would type it
◼
►
on one on my air and shut the lid and
◼
►
turn and just 10 seconds later i'm
◼
►
looking at my other machine and there's
◼
►
that bookmark that I just yo Jimbo down
◼
►
the machine right next to it it was
◼
►
great and now it's you know it's gone
◼
►
because mobile he's gone and if you want
◼
►
to sink two no Jimbo libraries which is
◼
►
I you know you can do it now through
◼
►
dropbox but it's kind of a hack and you
◼
►
have to quit one copy of your jumbo
◼
►
before you launch the other and stuff
◼
►
like that and they're going to switch to
◼
►
iCloud sinking but because they're
◼
►
switching to iCloud syncing now it has
◼
►
to be an app store on the app and I
◼
►
think you're going to hear that story
◼
►
well yeah you're going to see people
◼
►
like Manton or you know smile that's
◼
►
just going to have to take it someplace
◼
►
else you know which is which is
◼
►
certainly a bomber as well right but it
◼
►
feels like and I'm not saying this is by
◼
►
design but there's always a little bit
◼
►
of sugar in the medicine there's there's
◼
►
you know always I mean I cloud
◼
►
yeah you're sticking your iCloud
◼
►
documents to various things it is it's
◼
►
it's great i mean it's a really neat
◼
►
thing I cloud preferences any of that
◼
►
stuff it's it's a really neat idea on
◼
►
some level it does really feel like
◼
►
they're solving a problem that's already
◼
►
been solved better by Dropbox which for
◼
►
me has just worked so well that it's
◼
►
it's just kinda scary how well it works
◼
►
but you know just for an edge case like
◼
►
me what I give up in the potentially
◼
►
losing the ability to have this text
◼
►
about being usable by different apps you
◼
►
know that's that's a sucky trade-off for
◼
►
me but i don't know i mean is this is
◼
►
what about this before everybody's
◼
►
talking about this but you gotta follow
◼
►
Appa's lead where you're going to get
◼
►
totally left behind right you know
◼
►
thinking you know yet you know what if
◼
►
you wanna if you want your scroll to go
◼
►
this way enjoy that for maybe a year
◼
►
because that that little legacy button I
◼
►
like it the old way is probably going to
◼
►
go away at some point you know I mean
◼
►
but it's it's the part for me as a no as
◼
►
having as a person whose use this stuff
◼
►
for 25 years or however long it's been
◼
►
alright so like that wow that's freaky
◼
►
yeah 25 years is that I've always found
◼
►
the most interesting stuff on the edges
◼
►
and the things that compensate for
◼
►
something Apple wasn't doing often ended
◼
►
up being the thing that I really love
◼
►
even if it was something Apple was doing
◼
►
i frequently found a way to do it better
◼
►
and that was okay you know what I mean I
◼
►
you know obviously there's things like
◼
►
transmit like I don't think they had an
◼
►
ftp app apart from the terminal so I
◼
►
mean stuff i transmit no problem but you
◼
►
know I haven't even say deficits i mean
◼
►
i would say that Apple has for the last
◼
►
however many 5-10 years has been getting
◼
►
better and better and better at making
◼
►
something extremely stable that you
◼
►
could add onto to enhance your
◼
►
experience with what you're doing on
◼
►
your mac in particular and I i developed
◼
►
certain habits around that and I certain
◼
►
expectations about how things work and
◼
►
you know a friend who's not me that has
◼
►
been really wondering like wonder why
◼
►
open with isn't available in the finder
◼
►
sometimes and seeing that state because
◼
►
i use OD is open with a lot probably not
◼
►
always at that point I is open with all
◼
►
the time so we're talking about
◼
►
ctrl-click or right or right click on a
◼
►
document and your present with a menu of
◼
►
every app that your Mac knows of that
◼
►
could open this document so if that's a
◼
►
text file or Die movie they'll be a lot
◼
►
well why the heck would you want this
◼
►
wouldn't you just want to click on HTML
◼
►
and have it open in safari no I might
◼
►
want to go edit that bbedit which is my
◼
►
go-to for HTML editing i might want to
◼
►
open that text me if I want to turn that
◼
►
into mark down and do the writing system
◼
►
where I do the writing i might want to
◼
►
open in chrome if it's a movie so we're
◼
►
done with this call I will have a dot
◼
►
of two tracks and the only app that lets
◼
►
me edit that well is quicktime player 7
◼
►
right if I open in quicktime it's not I
◼
►
mean it's not even a comparison ID quick
◼
►
the t keep seven around i think i do on
◼
►
my machine but i haven't had a reason
◼
►
for it to use it pearl but on the face
◼
►
clicking got a movie that makes a lot of
◼
►
sense that that would open in whatever i
◼
►
guess that the itunes but like what if
◼
►
what if you like VLC well that's a much
◼
►
better experience in a lot of ways for
◼
►
me but that media files are the big news
◼
►
from open with because you know what are
◼
►
you gonna do with an image its could be
◼
►
widely widely vary i just want to look
◼
►
well I had just opened preview or
◼
►
whatever but I want to be printed it
◼
►
previously good guess but if you exactly
◼
►
if you want to open with a I want to
◼
►
edit it i want to open an acorn but I
◼
►
actually I don't want to use a corn
◼
►
because i want better I I specifically
◼
►
wanted to put text in it and I like the
◼
►
way the Pixelmator does text better so I
◼
►
want to open in Pixelmator and write
◼
►
something like that or I just want to
◼
►
open a browser because i actually want
◼
►
to see how this ping it if the colors
◼
►
are actually going to look good in the
◼
►
browser as I think they are because it's
◼
►
you know it's got a color profile right
◼
►
yeah I was open with all the time and is
◼
►
that might just be me but I feel like
◼
►
it's just you i I'm looking in another
◼
►
guy a guy over here away it's not you
◼
►
did you get it was nothing
◼
►
yeah i got an open with I think you
◼
►
might have to add that for your app I'm
◼
►
not sure you know what I have no idea
◼
►
i'm talking to my buddy lost my friend
◼
►
is not me that check it out but I don't
◼
►
know anyway yeah it's a it's it's
◼
►
there's so much exciting and good stuff
◼
►
happening and and it's I think it's
◼
►
sometimes frustrating for people inside
◼
►
and outside the apple bubble because
◼
►
there's so much that Apple does really
◼
►
well a lot of the time and there's
◼
►
almost always something that they could
◼
►
be doing better that ethic as you have
◼
►
documented over time that they are
◼
►
probably working on and and that's
◼
►
served me so well in the last few years
◼
►
it's only recently that I've got a
◼
►
little bit of the fear and and really it
◼
►
is because it's not because I'm being
◼
►
perfidious it's because I really this is
◼
►
what i use i don't know what else I
◼
►
would use besides this stuff but at this
◼
►
point for me i can afford to be a
◼
►
it makes fun of people who are
◼
►
physically with their workflow because i
◼
►
have a workflow is bulletproof and it's
◼
►
what is a workflow that I would will
◼
►
have to amend for sure if I want to keep
◼
►
using all this stuff in the way that I I
◼
►
yeah i went to shows running a little
◼
►
long but I was sorry I know that's right
◼
►
well I wouldn't do that would happen
◼
►
with you but I i have a little bit more
◼
►
i want to talk to you about but and then
◼
►
I want to stop and do a second sponsor
◼
►
ok I wanna tell you about tap stream for
◼
►
iOS mac and android may ring a bell they
◼
►
were sponsored my website maybe you've
◼
►
heard of it daring fireball who is
◼
►
already sponsored the site last week
◼
►
great guys what they've got their their
◼
►
app developers and they made this for
◼
►
themselves and sort of scratch their own
◼
►
niche it's a little little bit of
◼
►
analytics that you can put in an app you
◼
►
put in a mac app ios app android app and
◼
►
a little bit of that a little bit of
◼
►
JavaScript on your website and boom you
◼
►
can track all sorts of stuff that people
◼
►
are doing in your app and see where
◼
►
we're your app is getting recognized
◼
►
from where it's going nowhere it you
◼
►
know you have a thousand downloads of
◼
►
your Apple where did people here at it
◼
►
right did you hear about it I'm daring
◼
►
fireball did they get it from the
◼
►
unofficial apple weblog did they get it
◼
►
from kungfu grip this will tell you it's
◼
►
a great service super easy to implement
◼
►
they give you the code just a little bit
◼
►
of JavaScript you add your website they
◼
►
have an SDK you just drop it in your app
◼
►
and that's it you're done very very
◼
►
reasonably priced they've got a free
◼
►
thing that you can try it out you get
◼
►
the basic limit you get the basic
◼
►
features with a free account so you can
◼
►
see how it works before you pay for
◼
►
a lot of developers they may not even
◼
►
need any more for that but they have a
◼
►
pro account reasonably price give you
◼
►
all the information you want and the
◼
►
best thing about this is my favorite
◼
►
part i mentioned this last week on this

►
site but it makes me so happy
◼
►
is that the whole reason they're
◼
►
sponsoring this show and the reason they
◼
►
sponsor my website to promote tap stream
◼
►
was that they used to
◼
►
stream while it was in development to
◼
►
measure the effectiveness of a daring
◼
►
however for their app called tap folio
◼
►
trending that was then that's the name
◼
►
of their stock app is actually very
◼
►
beautiful app to you could take a look
◼
►
at that too on the App Store tap folio
◼
►
tap stream while i was in development
◼
►
saw that it was an effective way of
◼
►
getting a nap known and then they came
◼
►
back to sponsor again to tell you about
◼
►
taps team if you're an app developer go
◼
►
look at it go to tap stream dot-com and
◼
►
it's great stuff and also hungry they're
◼
►
so hungry for that kind of information
◼
►
yeah because you get nothing from Apple
◼
►
you just get nothing and you just get a
◼
►
thing from apple that is nothing you
◼
►
did it just gives you a number you just
◼
►
that's just it you go like you go to the
◼
►
Apple what is Apple tell you like if
◼
►
your app is did it's just they just give
◼
►
you number 6 500 but I just and that's
◼
►
it and then the next week it just says
◼
►
that you know 375 that's it that's all
◼
►
you know and then the check comes at the
◼
►
end of the month you don't know anything
◼
►
got to have something like tabstrip if
◼
►
you want to figure out how to help
◼
►
people are actually finding out where
◼
►
your apps coming from coming can you
◼
►
imagine running a website if you didn't
◼
►
have something that told you right
◼
►
refers it would be entirely not really
◼
►
really frustrating to again our friend
◼
►
Marco is an example it comes to mind but
◼
►
somebody who's you know wanting wanting
◼
►
to decide how to keep I'm not going to
◼
►
sit as a transitive verb if they want to
◼
►
make sure their business keeps growing
◼
►
they're going to need decide where to
◼
►
level resources where to put things and
◼
►
it's not simply a douche thing or you
◼
►
know we go surfing thing its business
◼
►
intelligence in the actual sense of the
◼
►
word and again that you're having a hack
◼
►
that in yourself but what a great
◼
►
service to have and does it do stuff
◼
►
like I mean so so how would it know that
◼
►
it came from your site
◼
►
I because it can't say didn't imagine I
◼
►
you know I don't even know how it works
◼
►
i guess because the link you do you get
◼
►
with the Lincoln and the link comes in
◼
►
with a little bit of like a referral
◼
►
aun are you are you making your own dog
◼
►
food eating your own dogs because it
◼
►
sounds like this dog food involved here
◼
►
this actually work the reason they're
◼
►
advertising your understand you
◼
►
correctly mr. Carson is that is that it
◼
►
actually worked this is they're here
◼
►
because it works right
◼
►
that's pretty cool where people go to
◼
►
learn more about this you go to tap
◼
►
stream dot-com upstream com you need one
◼
►
of the things like I've got where people
◼
►
knowing the answer / yeah i don't know i
◼
►
don't have that they kind of just fade
◼
►
to grey and we're back
◼
►
I think I that was good we got into some
◼
►
good stuff and now facing brave
◼
►
no not yet i have not really where I
◼
►
haven't taken the boys see any of these
◼
►
summer movies and now we're so far but
◼
►
are we saw the Avengers but haven't seen
◼
►
one since so we haven't seen brave we
◼
►
wanted to see men in black I don't know
◼
►
that's even in the theaters anymore so
◼
►
forget about that got to see brave
◼
►
haven't seen spider-man you have me back
◼
►
for next week well here's the thing i
◼
►
wanted to i just want to go through this
◼
►
list of it's a little noisy it's a
◼
►
little topical little you know and it
◼
►
satisfies you know I feel like a we have
◼
►
a chance to talk about the the tablet
◼
►
well we can do that ok then wrapped up
◼
►
and it kind of ties in with this which
◼
►
is all this stuff that google announced
◼
►
that the i/o conference and it made me
◼
►
think about the fact that almost
◼
►
everything google and apple are doing
◼
►
there that they're like two gears where
◼
►
you know what anybody would be called
◼
►
the way that the the teeth go together
◼
►
like in almost every regard one of them
◼
►
is ahead and the others catching up or
◼
►
the other ones ahead and the other one
◼
►
is catching up right and the google i/o
◼
►
listo he's just my notes i watch i watch
◼
►
their their their keynote and almost
◼
►
everything is what it's always one or
◼
►
the other so that's one of the first
◼
►
things i mentioned was project butter to
◼
►
get everything up to 60 frames per
◼
►
second and triple buffering and and all
◼
►
clearly they're trying to catch up to
◼
►
iOS their iOS has always been very
◼
►
smooth animation wise touch response
◼
►
lies android has not say whatever you
◼
►
want about android it hasn't now they're
◼
►
Google's tacitly acknowledging that
◼
►
they're catching up let's catch up for
◼
►
google then they didn't offline voice
◼
►
typing we know where you can dictate to
◼
►
the phone and it even works without an
◼
►
internet connection well that's
◼
►
something where google has been ahead of
◼
►
apple apple and Google's had voice
◼
►
dictation in an android for a couple
◼
►
years now and it works really good and I
◼
►
do think I i think it's faster
◼
►
do you use the dictation on the iphone i
◼
►
use it all the time i guess a city
◼
►
person i'm always out walking around and
◼
►
if I you know it's to send a text to my
◼
►
wife or whoever if I'm on the sidewalk
◼
►
walking i'll just hold down the button
◼
►
and dictated and it was so much better
◼
►
than trying to thumb type while you're
◼
►
actually walking but sometimes you do it
◼
►
and you get the little purple blinking
◼
►
lights and they're like blink blink
◼
►
blink but it's totally drunk dad like
◼
►
drunk dad drunk that comes to the plate
◼
►
just enough just often enough to break
◼
►
your heart yeah like I sit there and
◼
►
like I tried to demo that for somebody
◼
►
and I look like I'm out of my mind I'm
◼
►
just talking into my phone nothing
◼
►
happens and then sometimes I'll be
◼
►
sitting there and in the i'll be outside
◼
►
and it's windy and the train going by
◼
►
and I'll say three sentences and it gets
◼
►
it flawlessly in like a tenth of a
◼
►
second like it's already done it before
◼
►
it's completely crazy making you know
◼
►
what I wish it was always exactly one
◼
►
put in july i don't care what you wanted
◼
►
I want you don't mean I'm sorry but that
◼
►
there yes it should work and it makes me
◼
►
so crazy and then Syria forget them does
◼
►
understand my name anymore but I think
◼
►
Google's ahead on that I do and and they
◼
►
and the fact that now they have offline
◼
►
voice typing definitely puts them at it
◼
►
so you can still you can get some of
◼
►
this without even having a network
◼
►
connection so if you know i mean i think
◼
►
that clearly puts them ahead although it
◼
►
is right now you at the offline stuff is
◼
►
us english only but apple doesn't have
◼
►
any offline voice dictation what else to
◼
►
denounce expanding including including a
◼
►
mountain lion actually enough
◼
►
yes true expandable notifications with
◼
►
likereply buttons and and stuff like
◼
►
that i think that the whole notification
◼
►
center thing in the phone I think
◼
►
android is still I think you know I
◼
►
think it's pretty safe to say it's ahead
◼
►
of of the iphone in that room
◼
►
art like so if you get an email and a
◼
►
notification thing there's a little
◼
►
button they have you can just reply to
◼
►
it right there and make it go away
◼
►
that seems super convenient to me who
◼
►
here's my favorite this is my favorite
◼
►
then I get and I might i'm not going in
◼
►
the order that they announce stuff
◼
►
because this i think came than that
◼
►
their day to keynote but with it was a
◼
►
chrome tabs sinking do you use chrome
◼
►
and use safari yes and yes I mean no no
◼
►
it's here yes i do this both but I use
◼
►
chrome and I got the tab seeking and I
◼
►
it's amazing it is amazing and i run
◼
►
into this situation all day and then
◼
►
maybe this is me because i'm john gruber
◼
►
the guy links to lots of things but i
◼
►
know that there's this thing that i read
◼
►
that i want to link to but I don't
◼
►
remember where the hell i read it did i
◼
►
read it on my phone that i read it on my
◼
►
mac i read it on the macbook air isn't
◼
►
any ipad but i know i left it open
◼
►
wherever it was because I wanted to link
◼
►
it right from there and it's still
◼
►
hadn't done it and where the hell is and
◼
►
if you use chrome and you have on this
◼
►
tab sinking you can just go there and
◼
►
i'll show you all of your open tabs from
◼
►
all your devices and instant updates
◼
►
instantly and to me it's a brilliant
◼
►
feature as a guy who leaves open tabs on
◼
►
browsers all over the place and I'm
◼
►
playing around with it with the chrome
◼
►
for iOS and it wasn't you know it never
◼
►
whereas apple on the other hand now
◼
►
they're working on the same type of
◼
►
feature but it's not coming to iOS 6 and
◼
►
it's not coming to the mac until
◼
►
mountain lion but in the meantime
◼
►
they've got the one thing they do sync
◼
►
with safari is the reading list which is
◼
►
sort of like they're built into the
◼
►
I use that i use it not not ice you know
◼
►
don't use it as a replacement for
◼
►
instapaper instapaper is where I send
◼
►
stuff where I really do want to sit down
◼
►
in a nice comfortable chair and read
◼
►
stuff i will use the apple reading list
◼
►
just to send a URL from one machine to
◼
►
another right now i see like i never had
◼
►
more than three or four urls in my
◼
►
reading list for Apple because that's
◼
►
all I use it for I am on the ipad and I
◼
►
want to link to this i know i want to
◼
►
link to it from during far but i want to
◼
►
write more than I want to type on the
◼
►
ipad soft add it to my reading list go
◼
►
over sit down from my mac go to reading
◼
►
list and the damn thing isn't there and
◼
►
there's no reload button
◼
►
you just have to sit there and wait
◼
►
until you get lucky and it decides to do
◼
►
a sink and get it and I figured out that
◼
►
it does help though you can trigger it
◼
►
there's no reload button but you can
◼
►
trigger it by adding another thing to
◼
►
the reading list on the machine you're
◼
►
on just to just to get it to say just
◼
►
say just tell safari hate talk to the
◼
►
reading list sir I've done that with
◼
►
dropbox or creative folderol touch i'll
◼
►
do a touch on something just to like say
◼
►
ok update but here's the craziest thing
◼
►
the craziest thing is with safari with
◼
►
other times though you'll say add the
◼
►
reading list and you get an alert you
◼
►
get a dialog box that says it can't do
◼
►
it right now because bookmarks are
◼
►
sinking I get that all the time because
◼
►
I I'll go in and want to do one of my
◼
►
bookmark site i do my books mostly from
◼
►
the little book the little you don't
◼
►
mean yeah I just leave my bookmarks menu
◼
►
bookmarks bar whatever it is I just
◼
►
leave that open i don't use history much
◼
►
so I just leave that open forever going
◼
►
in there what do I have quicks for kicks
◼
►
instapaper Italy any of those yeah but
◼
►
then suddenly you good and will be these
◼
►
folders in there it's like sorry nothing
◼
►
here right now which is harrowing right
◼
►
even for a second isn't that we all it's
◼
►
I mean it's like you get default up
◼
►
paying right you should be something
◼
►
this looks like my stuff is that I had
◼
►
an iphone replaced all a while ago was
◼
►
in the in the sinking era and how to go
◼
►
to the apple store and get a get a unit
◼
►
swapped out and I got the new and they
◼
►
open it up and I put in my and they're
◼
►
like hey you know we got super fast
◼
►
Wi-Fi here to connect to that you could
◼
►
you know restore from iCloud backup and
◼
►
I was again why don't I just do that you
◼
►
know i mean if you know it seems super
◼
►
convenient when I just didn't have the
◼
►
eyes I walk out of the store i'll have
◼
►
all my stuff on my phone and I type in
◼
►
my icloud name and password and it says
◼
►
you want to restore from a backup and
◼
►
the the most recent backup was like
◼
►
seven months before I was like oh my god
◼
►
like my now I i double back up i also
◼
►
backup to my mac at home but still as a
◼
►
you know as a nerd that that's like a
◼
►
heart attack right there right and the
◼
►
expert guy was like the music I know
◼
►
what it is it's because that you
◼
►
you're the phone you just swapped out
◼
►
had ios 5.1 and in this phone as 501
◼
►
in other words the phone that they gave
◼
►
me the replacement had an older version
◼
►
of iOS but it didn't let you log in
◼
►
yeah but in other words that only let me
◼
►
update from the backup from when i was
◼
►
using that version of iOS you know what
◼
►
I mean like I ideal and I think that
◼
►
must be what happened to me one time on
◼
►
my iPad didn't do the research so i had
◼
►
to update the phone to the new version
◼
►
of iOS first then I could restore to the
◼
►
thing but that that's that same thing
◼
►
that moment areum thing where what it
◼
►
shows you and not what you expected and
◼
►
what it's showing you is involves data
◼
►
loss it's like oh my god and you did
◼
►
that from your Mac from your laptop did
◼
►
the restoring order yeah i just said the
◼
►
I what I ended up doing is just leaving
◼
►
the store with the phone in factory
◼
►
condition and just went home and and
◼
►
updated and all from the mac how much
◼
►
you okay i guess but anyway how much how
◼
►
would you have done if I'm sorry how
◼
►
would you have done if you don't have a
◼
►
mac i would have first updated the OS to
◼
►
iOS 5.1 over the war over the erica and
◼
►
then I then restored from backup
◼
►
ok so you could do it good better
◼
►
planned on that one for backup dork
◼
►
right but anyway with Apple sinking tabs
◼
►
right now singing bookmarks you can't
◼
►
even add a new bookmark while it's
◼
►
syncing bookmarks and this seems to
◼
►
happen to me all the time and it's not
◼
►
like something i ran into once I mean
◼
►
this is a dialogue i get all the time or
◼
►
we're on the other hand with chrome and
◼
►
google all your open tabs are synced
◼
►
instantly between everything let alone
◼
►
your bookmarks so anyway Apple clearly
◼
►
chasing google in that regard sinking
◼
►
these the the browser data google now
◼
►
there's one where i actually think even
◼
►
know that you know that's like their
◼
►
Serie like thing that's something that
◼
►
even though they haven't had anything
◼
►
that's quite like Siri in terms of the
◼
►
user experience in terms of the actual
◼
►
hey who knows how to do stuff like this
◼
►
that's right in Google's wheelhouse
◼
►
in other words what what is siri siri is
◼
►
let me give you a couple of words and
◼
►
you figure out what I mean
◼
►
then show it and you know all google
◼
►
really had to copy from Apple was this
◼
►
idea of you know what if we really know
◼
►
if we know exactly what the users asking
◼
►
for if they just say Yankees score we
◼
►
know we're a hundred ninety-nine percent
◼
►
sure we're a hundred percent sure this
◼
►
guy wants to know what the most recent
◼
►
Yankee score is we can show that
◼
►
information using a design template
◼
►
known for this particular nugget you
◼
►
know of data i think that the google now
◼
►
thing looks great only thing i hate
◼
►
about is the name the name is so stupid
◼
►
i got last week on the show I got
◼
►
confused when Adam was talking about it
◼
►
because he was saying something about
◼
►
google now and I thought he meant google
◼
►
the company today today's google google
◼
►
no because of how would you spell here
◼
►
see ya see this is why you got the
◼
►
popular blog that's true but that you
◼
►
know that is you talk about the special
◼
►
sauce supposedly this truly special
◼
►
it's just just for mrs. google is the
◼
►
scale everybody says the real thing
◼
►
about Google scale but the thing that we
◼
►
see those the consumer-facing thing is
◼
►
that like we're pretty sure we know what
◼
►
you want right we know going to want and
◼
►
we and because we know what you want we
◼
►
can show it to you in a way that is far
◼
►
more both pleasing and informative and
◼
►
and conveys the information better than
◼
►
a just a list of texts results right of
◼
►
any anything and everything and then we
◼
►
won't throw up our hands with serious
◼
►
because series got a couple level three
◼
►
levels of problem which is first of all
◼
►
there's the connectivity issues trying
◼
►
to place my relatives yesterday who are
◼
►
her recent iphone people I said you know
◼
►
it's a little sprite no I typically
◼
►
terrible analogies but it's kinda like
◼
►
having an eight-lane freeway where you
◼
►
really need like you would you could be
◼
►
okay if it was a 16 lane freeway and
◼
►
still find room like you like your
◼
►
series Scott to get to the clouds got to
◼
►
get to where you want to call it the sky
◼
►
and Cirie has to talk to something to
◼
►
get it so there's the problem of like if
◼
►
the bandwidth isn't there you're not
◼
►
hooked up right you know hooked up to
◼
►
it's not going to happen but even then
◼
►
like you could get the server error
◼
►
which was I'm percent which I read as
◼
►
busy it's not it's pretty taciturn about
◼
►
explaining why it didn't work right but
◼
►
then the other problem that is running I
◼
►
feel like I run into more and it doesn't
◼
►
make sense to me is it just doesn't get
◼
►
words right like words that I say all
◼
►
the time unless unless i'm having some
◼
►
I don't understand why it's having a
◼
►
harder time rather than better time
◼
►
understanding me but I don't have a
◼
►
problem see really does seem to
◼
►
understand me i get the fall back to I
◼
►
don't mind the Wolfram Alpha fall back
◼
►
because that's like pretty good but i do
◼
►
get a lot of you know do you want to
◼
►
search the web for ma'am Mambo dogface
◼
►
to the banana patch or whatever but in
◼
►
this instance I think you're describing
◼
►
here is really great especially if
◼
►
you're busy you're on the run the
◼
►
ability to just say two words like
◼
►
everyone is in Philadelphia but like say
◼
►
you might say nearest muni write
◼
►
something just by just by understanding
◼
►
like there's several factors that can go
◼
►
into having a pretty good idea what it
◼
►
is i'm looking for and even being able
◼
►
to fall back on that you mean one of
◼
►
these three things you know like from
◼
►
alpha is pretty great at that ever use
◼
►
i'm gonna use the website a lot i didn't
◼
►
do i use it use it for all my stock
◼
►
stuff on a link from doing for i find
◼
►
yeah they're they're they're really good
◼
►
and I'm not surprised at all that
◼
►
Apple's oh it's terrific relying on them
◼
►
for a lot of the serious stuff
◼
►
my only beef with the website is they've
◼
►
got a little bit bananas with all the
◼
►
like sign up for the pro account stuff
◼
►
yeah this they've taken a lot of
◼
►
features but you know you gotta make
◼
►
money whatever but like I i do this all
◼
►
time yesterday you know I said you know
◼
►
how many days is it from this date in
◼
►
this year to today to show my daughter
◼
►
how many days old she was and had a
◼
►
yeah you know what's-what's what is a
◼
►
what is on a hundred eleven percent of
◼
►
forty-six dollars because i just wanna
◼
►
know what the tip is for delivery I'm
◼
►
not that you know you as you know like
◼
►
well you know what you think that's
◼
►
pretty good for delivery yeah i died i
◼
►
do it for delivery man as a hard one
◼
►
see I used to on the two-dollar people
◼
►
for a long time was a 20-percent person
◼
►
I think it's a sucker thing to twenty
◼
►
it's ridiculous I I tip 20 rounding down
◼
►
rather than rounding up the eleven
◼
►
percent a roundup which i think is very
◼
►
generous for delivery
◼
►
yeah so like a $55 delivery al
◼
►
tip 10 bucks right here i'll throw in
◼
►
what's a hundred and eleven percent was
◼
►
again with the help of 255 dollar bill
◼
►
$55 855 even yeah okay what's a hundred
◼
►
eleven percent of $55 talking fast as I
◼
►
know we're almost out of time
◼
►
ok here you go miss a game eleven
◼
►
percent that's a six-dollar see my wife
◼
►
I differ on this let's get a little
◼
►
that's cute I look at that but i always
◼
►
do that anyway they can see again my
◼
►
demos for the worst but um but I can see
◼
►
this being super useful so you watch
◼
►
your years what you're saying you're
◼
►
larger point that i keep interrupting
◼
►
you on is that gears and teeth so that
◼
►
the the thing I wonder about that in
◼
►
terms of moving forward with things is
◼
►
here isn't it might be the wrong analogy
◼
►
when I know I know but I didn't think
◼
►
they seem to complement each other where
◼
►
they're each working on the other's
◼
►
well I minimalistic this is matt other
◼
►
maps google claiming google as women way
◼
►
ahead of the game on maps and now
◼
►
everybody's buying these map companies
◼
►
everybody's doing their maps i think
◼
►
google i think the iOS mapped in the
◼
►
beta that I can't talk about is actually
◼
►
fashions not I and it is so fat he said
◼
►
yeah and it looks beautifully easy i
◼
►
like the heart of this license and
◼
►
vector Rowling's yeah only around in
◼
►
maps is crazy fast yeah it's really
◼
►
really nice but it is missing the
◼
►
transit information which flawed or
◼
►
imperfect as it were as it is from
◼
►
google is better than nothing and street
◼
►
we talked about this adam and john
◼
►
august i talked about this last week
◼
►
street view is more practically useful
◼
►
than the flyover view that Apple has
◼
►
apples flyer review is far more
◼
►
impressive feels like you're making a
◼
►
movie but in terms of hey i'm in the
◼
►
city or this neighborhood i'm not
◼
►
familiar with what am I supposed to be
◼
►
seeing if I'm looking you know this is
◼
►
what I'm looking for in Street View is
◼
►
like that and that cool thing that they
◼
►
demoed i don't know if you saw this they
◼
►
call it compass view they think the
◼
►
nexus 7 does it but you hold up like
◼
►
your tablet and it using the
◼
►
whatever else is in there you get it
◼
►
gives you like a live streetview like as
◼
►
you pivot the thing around it it's like
◼
►
a window into the world
◼
►
oh google earth where yeah it's not just
◼
►
it's not just the horizontal axis when
◼
►
you move it up right like if you want to
◼
►
select google goggles if you want to
◼
►
yeah if you want to turn around you
◼
►
actually just hold the thing up in front
◼
►
of your face and turn around and it
◼
►
shows you what you would see in its
◼
►
super useful I think Apple clean up by a
◼
►
even Apple technology after catching up
◼
►
on maps but then you get the google play
◼
►
which is there in their store and the
◼
►
apps everybody knows the android apps
◼
►
are nowhere near as good as iOS apps and
◼
►
they have way less like media content
◼
►
like they don't have music from Warner
◼
►
Brothers and like if you use itunes u
◼
►
dont even reviewed who the hell knows
◼
►
what the move the the records stations
◼
►
are right i mean right record companies
◼
►
are who knows who's on warner brothers
◼
►
and who's on universal or whatever like
◼
►
that it's just you just know that it's
◼
►
in these it's very rare these days that
◼
►
I don't find what I want on for music
◼
►
read books are different situation far
◼
►
very far different situation but no with
◼
►
music I I very seldom if anything i have
◼
►
to go figure out which one of this i
◼
►
want to i want the deluxe edition doing
◼
►
is the movie store they have nothing
◼
►
from Fox sono ice age
◼
►
x-men avatar none of the twilight movies
◼
►
and the TV store they don't have
◼
►
anything CBS fox WB HBO BBC MTV
◼
►
Nickelodeon Showtime discovery history
◼
►
networks so no madman no modern family
◼
►
no family guy I'm stealing this all from
◼
►
David Polk that sounds hard and I you
◼
►
know it's like one of those little
◼
►
underappreciated things about Apple is
◼
►
the way that they have over the decades
◼
►
since they've opened the itunes music
◼
►
store negotiated with all of these
◼
►
little fiefdom of media major media
◼
►
content holders in the US and around the
◼
►
world most importantly and I know that
◼
►
like even apple doesn't have TV shows
◼
►
all over the world but they certainly
◼
►
have more than just in the US right
◼
►
because that was the other thing that
◼
►
came out yesterday is that the the you
◼
►
can buy the the new google 7-inch tab
◼
►
it in the UK but you don't get any TV
◼
►
shows or movies or magazines or
◼
►
something like that because they don't
◼
►
have the rights for really really hard
◼
►
and apple is clearly ahead of them there
◼
►
and I think you know clearly amazon is
◼
►
to the Nexus Q that the crazy
◼
►
three-hundred-dollar media player
◼
►
I mean it's ridiculous 300 bucks and it
◼
►
does less than the apple TV that cost
◼
►
$99 I mean apples clearly ahead of their
◼
►
I mean the airplay thing is actually
◼
►
I mean that's the I think that's what
◼
►
their airplanes airplane is ridiculous
◼
►
right bottom line magic
◼
►
yeah bottom line is that's what they
◼
►
have to catch up on because it's a
◼
►
killer feature is I've got this video
◼
►
unlike my kid i want to i want to watch
◼
►
this youtube video but it's no fun for
◼
►
three people to watch a video on a phone
◼
►
right i had a button it's on the appletv
◼
►
and it really unlike so many things it
◼
►
really does just work looks crazy that
◼
►
it just works right and and you know and
◼
►
yeah exactly could just be a youtube and
◼
►
now that everybody is shooting
◼
►
everything in HD and YouTube except
◼
►
everything in HD and you show and when
◼
►
you plant in a web browser window on
◼
►
your Mac it you know the HD thing is
◼
►
nice but when you plan on your Apple TV
◼
►
you can tell this is actually like HD
◼
►
really really so Google clearly catching
◼
►
up to apple right there
◼
►
I feel like everything they announced
◼
►
though is something that's either
◼
►
reinforcing one of their strengths that
◼
►
the other one doesn't have and/or
◼
►
announcing some sort of catch-up
◼
►
initiative in the other regard
◼
►
well it's I think there's probably I
◼
►
mean if I I don't follow this stuff
◼
►
anywhere near as close as you do but I
◼
►
mean I think there's probably of some a
◼
►
lot of good reasons for that I mean one
◼
►
thing is that i imagine that
◼
►
shareholders and a lot of there's still
◼
►
a lot of people that respond very well
◼
►
to tables with check marks and it's you
◼
►
know it's one of those frustrating to me
◼
►
to me personally it's one of those
◼
►
frustrating like okay I go I want to
◼
►
find out which version of this adobe
◼
►
thing I've gotta buy and I gotta sit
◼
►
there and like move my finger down the
◼
►
screen but you know I'm talking about
◼
►
don't know that the web professional
◼
►
enterprise prayer well what about your
◼
►
your buddy Brett tipsters
◼
►
iOS text editor chart which is like one
◼
►
of the great wonders of the world but
◼
►
you can flip off the columns you don't
◼
►
need right that sometimes you know but
◼
►
sometimes I'm I'm positing that I'm
◼
►
putting that as you know a place where
◼
►
that actually is useful
◼
►
well I'm but just to go straight to your
◼
►
to your thing though I mean like I think
◼
►
it's pretty and I jokingly referred to
◼
►
this earlier but i think it is pretty
◼
►
great that you can make fun of apple for
◼
►
their like by this white thing or that
◼
►
white thing but i think it is pretty
◼
►
great that you can actually it's not
◼
►
really that hard to go in and buy this
◼
►
thing on your phone like if you want to
◼
►
buy an ipad it's not super hard like
◼
►
they're they're all my gosh it's
◼
►
overwhelming there's eight options or
◼
►
whatever I think that's really really
◼
►
neat we are reducing the number of SKUs
◼
►
you're making easier to buy you're not
◼
►
doing this who have somebody had that
◼
►
whole post about trying to the dell site
◼
►
and like having to identify whether
◼
►
there are student or a multimedia user
◼
►
and it's just that kind of like that
◼
►
kind of brain-dead business unit
◼
►
thinking that led us to this terrible
◼
►
websites where was organized around
◼
►
I'm to the point I want to make is that
◼
►
for a lot of people there is one of the
◼
►
soldiers rephrase down good enough to
◼
►
not be nothing and I don't know if
◼
►
that's good or not but i just wrote that
◼
►
sometimes you just want to i think in a
◼
►
company a lot of companies with that
◼
►
have a pretty popular normal kind of
◼
►
say something that's good enough to not
◼
►
be nothing and I think that's the kind
◼
►
of thing that really grinds your gears
◼
►
is when somebody does something that is
◼
►
merely something that's good enough to
◼
►
not be nothing and i think its seat
◼
►
strikes me that was very frustrating to
◼
►
you when a lot of Polish care business
◼
►
document integration at every step of
◼
►
the the kind of thing that makes an
◼
►
iphone which is a really magical device
◼
►
you know it's not it shouldn't be as
◼
►
simple as just going oh yeah we got that
◼
►
too kind of right right so you're going
◼
►
to do we got some movies
◼
►
ok check right that for somebody who
◼
►
buys in that way and let's be honest a
◼
►
lot of enterprise people buy stuff like
◼
►
that thereby who's got the most checks
◼
►
and you know the thing is it isn't the
◼
►
consumer who came up with that grid you
◼
►
know the kind of ground talking about i
◼
►
know get the three levels of service
◼
►
would you get this one you get the free
◼
►
Johnson rod or whatever I think that
◼
►
good and we're going to say good enough
◼
►
to not be nothing is plenty for a lot of
◼
►
and you know netflix netflix streaming
◼
►
came out boy it was it was really the
◼
►
kind of thing I used to make you want to
◼
►
cancel my cable at any level of quality
◼
►
so but also i mean there's also just
◼
►
this philosophical difference in
◼
►
approach and i mean i guess and i don't
◼
►
mean this in the way that it sounds but
◼
►
i wonder how much this matters to people
◼
►
who are not strictly partisans for
◼
►
google apple or otherwise i mean i think
◼
►
a lot of people just want to cheap phone
◼
►
that does stuff and they go oh cool i
◼
►
can do movies now too
◼
►
well I think you hard winter because
◼
►
it's close enough to looking like that
◼
►
thing in the ads it's not going to cost
◼
►
me as much and and they're they're not
◼
►
gonna sit there and analyze whether this
◼
►
is closer to a kindle fire and ipad or a
◼
►
play play my store whatever its called
◼
►
I don't think that's almost bestbuy kind
◼
►
of people think and I don't know how
◼
►
kind of who they're going for I don't no
◼
►
don't don't you think that they're kind
◼
►
of going for people who want a
◼
►
twenty-dollar phone or want to go to
◼
►
bestbuy and get a black thing that's not
◼
►
an ipad i get maybe I reductive I mean
◼
►
that it's probably super productive and
◼
►
insulting to everyone involved but i
◼
►
don't think so i think with the play
◼
►
that I think they actually were very
◼
►
honest about it and that it or not to
◼
►
play the nexus 7 but that it's all about
◼
►
the play store when that they just said
◼
►
like three or four times they reiterated
◼
►
this is the thing that you buy for using
◼
►
content consuming content from google
◼
►
play apps movies TV shows magazine right
◼
►
right right we've got all this stuff you
◼
►
buy this thing for 199 bucks and that's
◼
►
how you use it you know and that's why I
◼
►
think it's so much more clearly which is
◼
►
kind of what the first apple TV was yeah
◼
►
definitely I mean it was kind of a
◼
►
hardware device for itunes yeah and it's
◼
►
funny because it got cheaper but got
◼
►
more versatile like that more expensive
◼
►
original one was far more limited to the
◼
►
itunes universe then then the current
◼
►
that's really that's a really
◼
►
interesting point because i actually I
◼
►
kind of wish so I just have a hacked
◼
►
apple TV i used to have hacked apple TV
◼
►
that would let me run all that stuff on
◼
►
it i used to do it a lot to be honest it
◼
►
was during the beta that I got sick of
◼
►
restoring and then reacting because it's
◼
►
a little bit of a pain but you know
◼
►
what's funny is I i didn't really miss
◼
►
it i can still use my Mac Mini with VLC
◼
►
to watch whatever but like if you know
◼
►
what's funny is if anything with my
◼
►
Apple I don't have those super super
◼
►
late because I told him it
◼
►
1080p TV but have a 1080i TV can you
◼
►
believe that exists it's not as our I
◼
►
don't even know what that it's like
◼
►
biometric gasoline or something just
◼
►
doesn't I don't even know what that
◼
►
um so but when r is there anything I
◼
►
wish I could take some icons away like I
◼
►
yeah we know it's funny we met that pal
◼
►
years the MLB guy i've made that crack
◼
►
about how like you doing incredibly
◼
►
impressive job with something I couldn't
◼
►
care less about and I mean that is the
◼
►
biggest compliment in the world and
◼
►
there will be things amazing like but I
◼
►
don't need to see that on my screen like
◼
►
I wish I could just see you know I mean
◼
►
Peters settings movies TV netflix
◼
►
podcast yeah you know it means you're
◼
►
crazy that you can't move those around I
◼
►
don't know how you would do it because I
◼
►
know the way that you know looks like
◼
►
something you would do by touch but it
◼
►
is enough but it does seem to know that
◼
►
somebody who who is a huge NBA fan
◼
►
should be able to move the NBA one to be
◼
►
more prominent than the major league
◼
►
baseball in and someone who doesn't like
◼
►
sports at all I be able to move those to
◼
►
oh yeah I mean I in an ideal world this
◼
►
is a little bit android i guess but it
◼
►
would have if you like my channels but
◼
►
you know what i mean like if you could
◼
►
say and then again this is a problem
◼
►
that has not been solved by stuff like
◼
►
boxy I mean or boxy swell plexus well
◼
►
I've tried all of them i think that's
◼
►
where Apple's going with the apple TV
◼
►
though is that it's going to be apps and
◼
►
that the apps are like channels and that
◼
►
you are you gonna get some kind of
◼
►
customization yeah but they I mean even
◼
►
I don't mind all of those because most
◼
►
of the stuff i want is you know apart
◼
►
from podcast is is up near the top i can
◼
►
get the netflix in a couple clicks I
◼
►
still got a lot of beef with the
◼
►
interface for some reason the remote app
◼
►
on my phone isn't working anymore i
◼
►
don't know why i run up against the Home
◼
►
Sharing thing constantly having to
◼
►
re-enter all my stuff everywhere I don't
◼
►
know I guess I'm hitting my limit or
◼
►
something but it's the apple TV thing is
◼
►
really kind of transformative what like
◼
►
I think like I think by far away the
◼
►
worst Apple experience you can possibly
◼
►
have right now today is entering a
◼
►
halfway decent password just don't even
◼
►
say the words I do I was the Apple TV
◼
►
right out the jobs had lived long enough
◼
►
that I could watch him try to enter like
◼
►
a medium security password with the
◼
►
or you can select or deselect over and
◼
►
over email just entering a horrible
◼
►
password your your your first child's
◼
►
first name as your password all lower it
◼
►
has a capital letter right track it and
◼
►
i totally agree with you it's totally
◼
►
crazy now and the thing is you know
◼
►
security siracusa didn't realize that
◼
►
the remote app existed so he has a Greek
◼
►
you can you imagine I I know it's crazy
◼
►
she was really good he um he had he had
◼
►
to go through that it can you imagine
◼
►
that poor guy is comfortable as he is
◼
►
with a four-way dingus
◼
►
yeah like but the other thing with that
◼
►
is that one thing that's an escape got
◼
►
just the thing though it's inescapable
◼
►
so you can have to everybody has to
◼
►
experience this one's even if you know
◼
►
about the remote app is that you can't
◼
►
use the remote app until you've got the
◼
►
thing on your Wi-Fi and so unless you
◼
►
have no password Wi-Fi you've got to at
◼
►
least enter one password which is your
◼
►
Wi-Fi network using the remote everybody
◼
►
gets to do it at least once
◼
►
John this is this is three shows but
◼
►
this is all this is such a whole I think
◼
►
we've had this discussion by out in 10
◼
►
seconds or seven minutes here's the
◼
►
problem is it's still thursday i think
◼
►
so you get you by your iOS device you
◼
►
get your phone what do you flip it on
◼
►
you guys start an account so what do you
◼
►
do you say you know monkey but 35 @
◼
►
me.com and pencil 69 my password
◼
►
whatever right because you're sitting
◼
►
there on your phone you mistyped a
◼
►
couple times right and you go okay i
◼
►
should pick something simpler
◼
►
so you pick pencil 69 right Oh that'll
◼
►
be secure it's got it just like that
◼
►
just like the guy with the paper told me
◼
►
now I've got a mix of numbers and
◼
►
letters so i'm good i got a thousand
◼
►
your password pencil 69 right and you
◼
►
know that you know the Cascade here
◼
►
oh I love it so i buy a mac so i turn on
◼
►
back to my mac with pencil 69 is the
◼
►
password i use pencil 69 because it's
◼
►
real pain in the butt to enter the
◼
►
internet on my appletv so now you've got
◼
►
first of all you have like a 20 second
◼
►
password second of all you got the same
◼
►
one on all of your devices because who
◼
►
do you know your family has different
◼
►
passwords for different things right
◼
►
my my I had a family member who got I
◼
►
told you this guy I'm Ali like that I
◼
►
you know I got half expect really but
◼
►
how'd you get hacked i got hacked on
◼
►
oh oh my god you're one of those like
◼
►
200 people that what happens and i got
◼
►
how'd you hack well I think
◼
►
I think what was your password i was the
◼
►
same as my name and I you know the thing
◼
►
is I'm I don't make this a thing but i'm
◼
►
telling you this is gonna be there's
◼
►
gonna be there's gonna be a security 911
◼
►
about this someday and you know and it's
◼
►
going to be because people had to go in
◼
►
or this ridiculously childlike password
◼
►
and I'm telling you I don't have any
◼
►
numbers on this John but I will bet she
◼
►
times to doughnuts that most people keep
◼
►
the first password that they put in
◼
►
whatever device they started on for as
◼
►
long as they can and they will use it
◼
►
for as many different devices and
◼
►
accounts as they can and they pick one
◼
►
day they don't go and then we'll go to
◼
►
password generators or try to test these
◼
►
things it takes you seen me you've seen
◼
►
how long it takes me to do my media com
◼
►
password there was a there was a session
◼
►
at WWDC on security and they had a Q&A
◼
►
afterwards which is rare anymore WWDC
◼
►
like people have ruined the Q&A with bad
◼
►
questions so that they used to be almost
◼
►
every session at Q&A and now very few do
◼
►
but they were Q&A after the security
◼
►
session and there's a is credibly astute
◼
►
question which was it was off topic for
◼
►
the thing but it was like Apple security
◼
►
guys where the guys doing the session
◼
►
and they were like what if you guys been
◼
►
what you guys working on to just
◼
►
completely eliminate the broken password
◼
►
paradigm and it was like three seconds
◼
►
of silence and the guy just said no
◼
►
r or no didn't say no testing which is
◼
►
really doesn't filter i take it back he
◼
►
said we have nothing to say about that
◼
►
at this point which is looking around so
◼
►
that's easier that's either that's
◼
►
either silly are saying too much or it
◼
►
could be anything could be nothing could
◼
►
be should immediately said what we're
◼
►
always working on right well i do but i
◼
►
do think that it's something that
◼
►
and did you say there's some dude now is
◼
►
there somebody who's like
◼
►
single-mindedly like some famous guys on
◼
►
I'll bet there is I don't say that
◼
►
somebody there knows this Apple somebody
◼
►
somebody kinda like I need to get a
◼
►
brain somebody's talking about how like
◼
►
there's a dedicated person you're
◼
►
dealing with the identity problem in
◼
►
general I thought that was used i don't
◼
►
think so huh also cover that to go back
◼
►
five minutes that was Peter right at ARS
◼
►
technica who wrote about trying to buy a
◼
►
it was a very very it was it you know
◼
►
just telling that story straight would
◼
►
have been funny but the way he did what
◼
►
I thought was very very fine
◼
►
he went to del to buy a laptop and the
◼
►
categories he had to start with we had
◼
►
to choose between everyday computing you
◼
►
know it's so funny I was just thinking
◼
►
this morning design and design everyday
◼
►
computer user I'm just finally realizing
◼
►
that everyday computing design and
◼
►
performance and the other one was then
◼
►
and powerful so which one do you want
◼
►
function of the couch it right up
◼
►
so the better ones lanova the lenovo had
◼
►
three categories to choose from this is
◼
►
powered for productivity optimized for
◼
►
entertainment and no-nonsense features
◼
►
built for versatility
◼
►
no not since say that again no no
◼
►
nonsense features built for versatility
◼
►
ok I don't that's a good category you
◼
►
I guess that means poor yeah but what
◼
►
sort of differencing optimized for
◼
►
entertainment and powered for
◼
►
productivity which one's the good image
◼
►
porn or video porn i don't know i had
◼
►
that's another thing is John I mean
◼
►
they're getting more important point
◼
►
which is that you really should be
◼
►
optimized i have although they should
◼
►
take every goddamn whiteboard out of
◼
►
that place in break in half
◼
►
I have always that sets a shame i have
◼
►
often said that the best thing about
◼
►
being a mac person is when you buy a new
◼
►
computer it's actually not that hard
◼
►
yeah really i think i would go nuts if I
◼
►
had to buy windows pc i totally agree i
◼
►
hey so what do you think you can't buy
◼
►
HD movies a lot of times
◼
►
Wow and on iTunes I guess because they
◼
►
think they why can you only rent it you
◼
►
think that's a that's a label or a yeah
◼
►
they date they don't trust rating yeah
◼
►
that's the worst i think i think ratings
◼
►
for suckers I mean if they let you rent
◼
►
it out here so here's if you were me and
◼
►
I could negotiate here's what i would
◼
►
say you ran a movie and if you you get
◼
►
to start it and finish it once in the
◼
►
next 30 days right that would be if it
◼
►
were me that's what i would say you're
◼
►
saying you gotta see you get you can
◼
►
have settings of this movie maybe you
◼
►
can even rewind five minutes a couple
◼
►
times something something but you know
◼
►
what i mean my problem is that
◼
►
expiration within a short period of time
◼
►
I wouldn't I have a four-year-old
◼
►
daughter i will never watch that movie
◼
►
that way even in a hotel room you can
◼
►
make a positive like watching on the
◼
►
other te looking for in a suite or
◼
►
something like that right but not that I
◼
►
I that drives me a little bit crazy like
◼
►
it somebody somewhere thinks that I
◼
►
don't know if they think it's going to
◼
►
be pirated but it but it can't really be
◼
►
piracy because then why would they let
◼
►
anybody was the point I mean then right
◼
►
again your back to the whole like we're
◼
►
not making business and so we're like
◼
►
anyway I think that's super weird i'm
◼
►
going to it's so not the other day you
◼
►
know we're trying to be good about like
◼
►
setting limits on things you know just
◼
►
any limit as long as there's a limit
◼
►
right that's the thing right with the
◼
►
kids stuff it doesn't matter like you
◼
►
know a lot of people focus on like what
◼
►
the limit is I think it's just important
◼
►
to have a limit and then enforce it so
◼
►
we're going to movie night we schedule
◼
►
movie night tonight is moving it but you
◼
►
go and hit the thing and like in a
◼
►
second Wally is streaming and it's
◼
►
the internet that that is really amazing
◼
►
to me that still blows me away every
◼
►
time and so ustream you don't storm
◼
►
no I used to but now I don't need to as
◼
►
you know and I have some blurays because
◼
►
some of the movies i truly truly that's
◼
►
horrible i buy the blu-ray but it you
◼
►
know what as time goes on and get more
◼
►
used to apple TV even if i'm really in
◼
►
the mood to watch one of my very
◼
►
favorite movies that I've bought on
◼
►
blu-ray the the idea of getting standing
◼
►
up and getting a disk and I mean it's
◼
►
all involves about four steps combined
◼
►
to get up get the disc change the hdmi
◼
►
cable and Allah but it all seems so
◼
►
daunting when I could just watch you
◼
►
21 Jump Street movie on itunes in 10
◼
►
seconds I I really I i hate to admit
◼
►
this because I i'm really not the kind
◼
►
of person that blows money I blow money
◼
►
on some stupid things like alcohol but
◼
►
like I don't just go by like electronics
◼
►
for like I'm just not the kind of person
◼
►
but I was finally ok look clearly you
◼
►
know the winter has been chosen it's
◼
►
bluray and so I went and I got I got
◼
►
like the the total middle-of-the-road
◼
►
this is not that expensive whatever 203
◼
►
and whatever alpha amazonas got the
◼
►
blu-ray and I swear to you on my hand to
◼
►
God I have owned more DVD players then i
◼
►
have used the blu-ray player i bought
◼
►
the blu-ray player and I've got exactly
◼
►
one thing which is the godfather trilogy
◼
►
and I watched two of them and everyone
◼
►
should own it just for the documentary
◼
►
that we talked about this but seriously
◼
►
it's in the closet with the old tivo now
◼
►
it's just like it was in it because in
◼
►
our case we have this traffic TV we
◼
►
don't have a great media setup and we
◼
►
would have to like change the hdmi cable
◼
►
and all that I guess the hdmi is like
◼
►
I mean that's going to become the that
◼
►
USB of stuff i guess i don't know if you
◼
►
guys we gotta go right we have a great
◼
►
show resident crazy that I mean it shows
◼
►
not okay here's what i do i tell you i'd
◼
►
give you a similar example and I know
◼
►
it's one of your current obsessions is
◼
►
that you're you're you and Ellie I
◼
►
believer in the fantastic mr fox picked
◼
►
which is not one of my favorite movies
◼
►
of the last few years and it's one of
◼
►
those movies that it really does I've
◼
►
watched it so many times and I keep
◼
►
more i remember when i saw it the first
◼
►
time and that i thought i'm almost
◼
►
certain the boy went to see that one in
◼
►
the theater because I thought I can't
◼
►
miss a chance to take my kids to see Wes
◼
►
Anderson movie I mean he's never you
◼
►
know when the next thing that's going to
◼
►
happen we thought we thought about rush
◼
►
but it's got handjobs tekli and and I
◼
►
remember when I watch it I wasn't really
◼
►
sure I like the movie at one point and
◼
►
then it kind of got to the end and in
◼
►
the very end the final scene in the
◼
►
supermarket she's to all of a sudden I
◼
►
realized my god i just hit me all my god
◼
►
I love this movie love it and how great
◼
►
is that song at the end which is all the
◼
►
Bobby 44 yeah you know what you would
◼
►
love John Gruber you would love you
◼
►
would love to hear two things first my
◼
►
daughter demanding that i play street
◼
►
fighting man on repeat all that's that
◼
►
is I know it's not rocks off its pretty
◼
►
good and then it's right as soon as it
◼
►
comes on she goes oh yeah so awesome you
◼
►
can see my son was a hundred percent the
◼
►
same i watched the first 20 minutes of
◼
►
it whenever it came out and I could
◼
►
watch it somewhere and when this is cute
◼
►
you've got to watch that movie all the
◼
►
way through once and then watch it again
◼
►
right and like every time you look at
◼
►
one of those faces straight on looking
◼
►
at the camera it's the most the late and
◼
►
then ashes ear twitching like spinning
◼
►
it's a total delight but it's such
◼
►
genius filmmaking too because if you
◼
►
listen to the lyrics of the song it's a
◼
►
guy who's lost his girl right but yeah
◼
►
they're great at that
◼
►
it's a guy who lost his girl but in the
◼
►
movie its triumphant it strengthened and
◼
►
it it makes you it makes you feel happy
◼
►
even though the lowest did you buy it on
◼
►
the we know what we did here's the thing
◼
►
here's Mary is what made me think about
◼
►
it and this is a perfect way to end the
◼
►
show is that we bought the blu-ray and
◼
►
it's i think i think it was one of those
◼
►
1 i'm almost certain i think it's one of
◼
►
those ones where you buy the blu-ray and
◼
►
it comes with the DVD and a digital
◼
►
download from itunes but that isn't its
◼
►
SD you know it's not HD HD extra
◼
►
features are totally changed but but
◼
►
rather than get the blu-ray out and go
◼
►
through it i'll just hit play on apple
◼
►
TV and play a lesser version maybe
◼
►
there's HD I don't know but it still
◼
►
doesn't look as good as the blu-ray and
◼
►
even though I'm the type of guy really
◼
►
cares about how stuff looks and i bought
◼
►
the blu-ray because i really want to see
◼
►
like the actual hairs on
◼
►
and that characters twitch and stuff
◼
►
like that it's so much more convenient
◼
►
to just fired up on on itunes and stream
◼
►
it is ridiculous we've talked about this
◼
►
before I think you know your wife's
◼
►
underwear so Weezer fan I can't tell you
◼
►
how many copies of weezer i bought
◼
►
because I didn't want to go in the other
◼
►
room get the CD the blue record it's
◼
►
it's it's asinine and like once you get
◼
►
that Apple has apple has me bent over
◼
►
something like that their eyes I've got
◼
►
a lot of albums i've got a lot of albums
◼
►
that i just did the torpedoes i think
◼
►
that's it another right I just don't
◼
►
want to risk because that I think to
◼
►
even I have to find the disk and then i
◼
►
gotta wait for it to rip and it takes me
◼
►
10 minutes to reboot CD or words that's
◼
►
true whether using handbrake i
◼
►
discovered this one called I flicks it's
◼
►
pretty great if he's I flicks no okay
◼
►
you should check it out but now i
◼
►
totally agree with you and they I mean
◼
►
like I can't believe in a million years
◼
►
that I ever got that comfortable you run
◼
►
that app that shows how much you spent
◼
►
no I don't do it no don't do it don't do
◼
►
it yeah why would I writing my paper
◼
►
receipts 1010 you can ask you a question
◼
►
yeah you really use dashes instead of
◼
►
asterisks 44 you else i do well you know
◼
►
what I my very own that ok i know you
◼
►
yeah most of them are going to email i
◼
►
said yeah it did I didn't look at it
◼
►
right now okay alright just check it out
◼
►
sometime some stuff like some of Brett
◼
►
tips of stuff does better with asterisks
◼
►
like the do you have to use would use
◼
►
I don't think so oh god I should teach
◼
►
you about markdown it's really cool and
◼
►
I right by Wright markdown like a
◼
►
that's a shame on you i think i do i'm
◼
►
pretty sure i write like a caveman chami
◼
►
i'm talking about markdown stuff but you
◼
►
know what i use the dashes I think
◼
►
because I I'd I so pretty early looks
◼
►
I so overly associate the asterisks with
◼
►
italicized as Talas ation yeah right i
◼
►
still disagree i still disagree with the
◼
►
design decision about astros vs.
◼
►
underscores but that's because I wasn't
◼
►
well you know I still have a preference
◼
►
I still if i can i will go in and edit
◼
►
something so that while i wait before I
◼
►
even knew you I wrote to you about this
◼
►
and you sent me a taciturn response as
◼
►
you do but I'd said like textile I think
◼
►
asterisks I think it's textile I think
◼
►
bold and underscore should be Italian oh
◼
►
but no no of course I changed my life
◼
►
around your goddamn thing you don't
◼
►
maintain anymore but right now i'm ok
◼
►
with that because now it's muscle memory
◼
►
you should make this better for guys
◼
►
that he's doing amazing stuff with your
◼
►
stuff i do maintain it i maintain it by
◼
►
not screwing around with it
◼
►
that's smart yeah you know everybody
◼
►
tells me that I need to do more with
◼
►
Mark different Jon you're at a time
◼
►
where we ended for change every week
◼
►
there's more and more people using this
◼
►
thing i don't like is that proves it
◼
►
right now it doesn't it I don't know I
◼
►
just feel like with ours dicking around
◼
►
with the syntax all the time i would
◼
►
Cano not know different showcase all
◼
►
right i'll try that but you know he has
◼
►
stuff like you select these lines suck
◼
►
lines and hit command shift eight
◼
►
interns at all into UL a hit command
◼
►
ship one interns mode LOL thats not done
◼
►
it's fast as hell yeah I could see that
◼
►
i'm looking at i'm looking at
◼
►
impermanent alright well yeah I think
◼
►
okay right before we sign off when we
◼
►
just did the double thank our sponsors
◼
►
we've got tap stream at tap stream com
◼
►
analytics for iOS and mac and android
◼
►
apps and Launch Center pro in the iOS
◼
►
App Store fantastic utility for quick
◼
►
launching stuff on your iPhone go get it
◼
►
Merlin thank you thank you for doing
◼
►
this i think the whole thing came off
◼
►
pretty well I'm very friendly for two
◼
►
guys who the last time I saw you in
◼
►
person you were doing a photoshoot in
◼
►
the house of shields bathroom with my
◼
►
yeah that's not good yeah yeah the thing
◼
►
is I i want to get accessible i was
◼
►
charging ten bucks at first for them and
◼
►
then I realized that 99 cents i could
◼
►
actually get more out of his countenance
◼
►
the paper model for photos of your wife
◼
►
i don't think i said i send you all of
◼
►
them my gosh you guys got all of them
◼
►
but i don't know i think i had some
◼
►
photos and they look like along the way
◼
►
she looks like she's trying she realizes
◼
►
someone's taking a picture of the urinal
◼
►
little photo bombing and she wants to
◼
►
just get make sure she's in the picture
◼
►
it looks like some we should send the
◼
►
american apparel haha ah
