Hello Internet

H.I. #26: Brady Had Dinner With Darth Vader

00:00:00   Oh my God I feel like we should just stop. [TS]

00:00:04   We've been trying for thirty five minutes to get this thing to work to get a connection between the two of us [TS]

00:00:10   and we've had one set of broken head phones internet problems echo problems [TS]

00:00:17   and apparently an Indian dude in between the two of us starting this record it was more difficult in the first one we [TS]

00:00:26   ever did. Yeah by far by a lot. We have been beset with technical problems tonight. [TS]

00:00:31   Yes we have and there is nothing more interesting than podcasts talking about their technical problems getting started. [TS]

00:00:38   However are you trying to call me and pressing the same button several times in a row. [TS]

00:00:45   But killing some stranger is an interesting new technical problem [TS]

00:00:50   and I would love to know if any of the listeners have had this because Yet I wonder now like has someone tried to hack [TS]

00:00:57   my account [TS]

00:00:58   or does face time just for the law occasionally send you to random strangers send me to the same guy twice in a row. [TS]

00:01:06   Unlike the third time I've been caught you using the same things. That was I think there's a ghost in the machine man. [TS]

00:01:15   This video witchcraft going on here. [TS]

00:01:19   Should we just see what happens on [TS]

00:01:21   and off halfway through this point customs of the going to find myself talking to that other bloke that might be good [TS]

00:01:27   he might be really interesting that you might be here we go where he is his brilliancy G.P. [TS]

00:01:34   Grey and if a voice changes halfway through names will change midstream. I got a. [TS]

00:01:40   I'm all I'm all lost now I have to open up the thing you're very close to I [TS]

00:01:45   and of the people had say in our last half hour which was mostly us looking at each other you hear each other [TS]

00:01:57   and it was thrilling. [TS]

00:02:01   We would go under just like two cave men banging on the screen with a bone or something just to make it work. [TS]

00:02:10   Even you couldn't make it work. [TS]

00:02:11   The funny thing was I was like oh my goodness for the first time ever it's great technology [TS]

00:02:16   and I missed the CO I finally at the end of twenty minutes we realized it was my mistake in my headphones [TS]

00:02:21   and start working and you were convinced. [TS]

00:02:24   Because I think my headphones stop working at the exact moment you happened to meet your so for some other reason. [TS]

00:02:30   So you thought you weren't coming out of mute when in fact you were [TS]

00:02:33   and it was my fault all right all right OK so let's try to do some follow up like normal people. [TS]

00:02:40   Flowcharts flowchart OK so I just want to give a shout out to a couple of people in the red it made these flow charts [TS]

00:02:50   of our conversation for the previous episode and as one might imagine who'd listen to many of these episodes. [TS]

00:02:58   Our conversations can occasionally be shall we say meandering they can loop back around they can visit a topic many [TS]

00:03:05   times then return to something else [TS]

00:03:07   and to very patient very diligent editors have detailed all of the various flows of the conversation [TS]

00:03:14   and all of the various loops so I'm going to put those two links in the show notes and. [TS]

00:03:19   Maybe nobody else is interested in this but I actually find them quite interesting to look at [TS]

00:03:23   and to see what happens if you try to map on a on a screen in the direction that a conversation takes over time. [TS]

00:03:31   You say meandering I say textured and rich and complex. Yeah is that what you're saying. [TS]

00:03:39   Also I did notice that H R I animated made its comeback this week there was the fifth installment of da skis. [TS]

00:03:48   Interesting take on snippets of our meandering conversations. [TS]

00:03:53   Now dusk is done another amazing job with those animations I really really like his work. I'm very happy. [TS]

00:04:00   See them when they come in [TS]

00:04:01   and so yes I will definitely put a link in the show notes as well people should check those out if you haven't seen [TS]

00:04:06   them already I really quite like them. [TS]

00:04:08   They're getting kind of darker and twist to that like I like in a good way [TS]

00:04:12   but like every time it's getting a bit weird I realize there's lots of in jokes I don't get to because I'm not very [TS]

00:04:18   cool with my internet culture [TS]

00:04:19   but they have heaped I said they change the context of things I think dusky has a style [TS]

00:04:26   and I think he's doing well with that style. But people should check it out. So that will be in the code. [TS]

00:04:33   OK so last time last time you told me about the airlines trying to paint paint over their logo as [TS]

00:04:44   when a plane crash has occurred or otherwise trying to obscure their logos [TS]

00:04:48   and you asked I think we asked people to try to come up with a term for this [TS]

00:04:54   and I'm going to say that if you were Felix in the red it was the winner of this one [TS]

00:05:00   and he called that wreckage redaction and I think that's I think that's a good phrase [TS]

00:05:05   and it is also what I was looking for. Generalizable beyond just airplanes. [TS]

00:05:11   And so you say like oh wreckage you can think about this in metaphorical terms of any kind of disaster that a company [TS]

00:05:17   has gone through. They try to cover up any of the wreckage so that you don't know that it was them. [TS]

00:05:23   So I like this as a proposed term for this thing. I'm on board with that one time. That's good. [TS]

00:05:27   Oh good we both were both behind it the thing I like about it because last week not lost weight that last episode you [TS]

00:05:33   said Brand reduction. [TS]

00:05:35   Yeah and I thought using I thought that just made it sound bland and boring and corporate [TS]

00:05:40   but wreckage is such an emotive word that I think wreckage or rejection. [TS]

00:05:44   And obviously it's also got the alliteration so well done well done. It's absolutely perfect. [TS]

00:05:49   We're both in agreement on this. [TS]

00:05:51   So I quite like this one [TS]

00:05:53   and a small point was to get a little conversation in the red it was about the legality of this and it looks. [TS]

00:06:00   Like at least in the United States it's pretty clearly illegal that it would fall under the category of evidence [TS]

00:06:07   tampering was the conclusion that that seemed to come to it. [TS]

00:06:12   I don't know if I'll be able to find a link offhand [TS]

00:06:13   but it seemed like as soon as there is any kind of accident the wreckage becomes the immediate property of the [TS]

00:06:20   government to do an investigation on that [TS]

00:06:23   and I can't go any kind of manipulation of that is evidence tampering so at least in the U.S. [TS]

00:06:28   It looks like on paper anyway this would not be a legal thing. [TS]

00:06:32   That really seems to me the way that they using the evidence tampering law not in the spirit that the evidence [TS]

00:06:39   tampering though is intended because they're not really tampering with evidence for its evidential value. [TS]

00:06:46   They're tampering with it for a different reason I don't think they're not going to figure out how the plane crashed [TS]

00:06:51   because you know Thai Airways logo has a bit of black paint on it [TS]

00:06:56   but what I think they're doing is taking something that's clearly dodgy and bad anyway [TS]

00:07:00   and they're using a different law to say it's illegal. [TS]

00:07:03   You don't know man you don't know what's underneath that paint the investigators could be going all C S I on that [TS]

00:07:09   but you know some some dude with the paint brush was stomping around and breaking stuff with his boots [TS]

00:07:14   and you know covering up that vital piece of whatever with the paint. [TS]

00:07:17   I'm going to really disagree with you here I think it is totally evidence tampering. [TS]

00:07:21   OK Well I think what they're doing is wrong and if they use the evidence tampering law to stop them then fair enough [TS]

00:07:28   but I don't think it's evidence evidence tampering [TS]

00:07:30   and from what I've seen of plane crash sites it's not like it's not like a typical murder saying where you've got to be [TS]

00:07:36   careful about where you put your boot prints because it could be you know this plane crash is it is not like you know I [TS]

00:07:44   was going to try to use the Brady metaphor argument you would say something to me like Oh would it be OK if somebody [TS]

00:07:52   came in and painted over the corpse. [TS]

00:07:53   This is the kind of question that you would ask me if I was arguing on the other side which beat me to it like a year [TS]

00:07:59   ago. [TS]

00:08:00   Even so I don't think it's the spirit of the law [TS]

00:08:01   but whatever they're doing something dodgy stuff that's how we can stop them. [TS]

00:08:05   Let's do it one as we go and do the whole bunch of Norway stuff and get you to Norway things [TS]

00:08:10   and if you can open the link below Yes I have I have already opened one of them. [TS]

00:08:15   You have sent me a link to a Norwegian passport [TS]

00:08:19   and this has a C T P Great written all over it I don't know how you can presume such a thing wrong. [TS]

00:08:27   But yes last time I discussed the U.S. [TS]

00:08:31   Passports and the Irish passports and their various designs [TS]

00:08:34   and about a million people sent me the links to the new Norwegian passport you are correct my love. Way to Go Norway. [TS]

00:08:44   The front cover is very simple it looks like it's mostly just a color says Norway on it [TS]

00:08:50   and there's a little crest in the top left. [TS]

00:08:52   But but the thing that I think is really the centerpiece of this is the page for the stamps. [TS]

00:08:59   And they have a very nice simple diagram of the water [TS]

00:09:04   and the mountains the mountains are done in a very angular style and they have and the moon is over it [TS]

00:09:09   but it's almost like for the video gamers. [TS]

00:09:12   Among you it almost looks like what's called low poly artwork [TS]

00:09:17   or using very few polygons to draw something that's kind of what it looks like. [TS]

00:09:21   But most importantly this is a page that accomplishes what I think a passport page is supposed to. [TS]

00:09:27   It looks good and stamps will look clear on it and easy to forge. [TS]

00:09:34   You don't know that it's easy to Ford I don't know if you don't know that at all particularly because that second [TS]

00:09:38   picture is what the same scene looks like if you shine a U.V. Light on it and so if you shine a U.V. [TS]

00:09:44   Light on this it makes it look like it is night time and so the moon starts to glow. [TS]

00:09:49   There's an Aurora in the sky [TS]

00:09:52   and it looks like there's a whole bunch of anti fraud information including the passport number maybe below. [TS]

00:09:57   So I don't think that it's easy now. [TS]

00:10:00   I'm going flip and it is a very cool passport it kind of looks like it's from the sixty's or seventy's or something. [TS]

00:10:05   Yeah it's almost like it's retro futuristic. [TS]

00:10:08   I think if you can pull that off that is one of the coolest looks that you can possibly have like movies that pull off [TS]

00:10:15   though it's the one nine hundred fifty S. [TS]

00:10:17   but Actually it's the twenty fifties thing as a very hard to do well [TS]

00:10:21   but if you can do it well it looks great like get a car sort of thing [TS]

00:10:24   and I think basically Norway has really hit that that sweet spot. [TS]

00:10:28   Big thumbs up to Norway on the passports of the second link I happen to know let me call up the second like OK I'm [TS]

00:10:36   calling it out now so passports was a way to have a look this is Norwegian money yes. [TS]

00:10:45   OK so now what are your thoughts on this Norwegian money [TS]

00:10:48   or do you want to try to explain it to listeners actually is what you should do first is this for real. [TS]

00:10:53   Well I will tell you that this is for real. [TS]

00:10:55   OK So basically on the front side of the currency it has quite a nice looking normal money. [TS]

00:11:04   Reminds me a little bit of sort of this sort of euro currency in its design and appearance in many ways. Quite good. [TS]

00:11:13   And then on the other side it's kind of been. [TS]

00:11:17   It's the exact same image except it's been kind of pixilated or Minecraft or door made or blocky [TS]

00:11:24   and I don't know why they do this for the purposes it's very. [TS]

00:11:29   So on one side it's like a really normal detailed image [TS]

00:11:32   and on the other side it's this kind of redacted version you know most of what's going on here. [TS]

00:11:40   It is it is almost redacted I think this is really interesting. [TS]

00:11:43   One thing I do quite like about the front side of the Norwegian money is that they haven't gone with the terribly [TS]

00:11:49   boring people from history route that so much so much money does. [TS]

00:11:53   Or instead they have a lighthouse they have a very they have a very Viking looking ship might they have a fish they [TS]

00:11:59   have. [TS]

00:12:00   The ocean and I'm a big fan of all of these designs on the front and yes on the back side they have pixilated it [TS]

00:12:06   and it is very strange to look at is this is just to make a computer readable [TS]

00:12:12   or something what's going on here as far as I can tell I was just trying to google around a little bit this is just a [TS]

00:12:18   design decision. [TS]

00:12:19   This is just to make it interesting looking [TS]

00:12:21   and this is this is again this is one of these things in design where I can't I never quite can put this into words [TS]

00:12:27   very well but it's like I will give Norway a thumbs up for a bold decision on the back [TS]

00:12:34   and I don't know if I like this I kind of think that I don't [TS]

00:12:39   but I applaud doing something different you know my thoughts are I feel the same way as you I'm not quite sure what I [TS]

00:12:47   think but I lean towards not blocking as well [TS]

00:12:50   but the thing that amazes me was this got through all the levels of approval when politicians and administrators [TS]

00:12:57   and all the things this would have had to have gotten through to become real. [TS]

00:13:01   It got through like at no point did someone say here are like that's really clever [TS]

00:13:06   but no like it just kept getting a yes until they were printing the things. [TS]

00:13:11   Presumably they're printing these or is it some concept is on to something. [TS]

00:13:15   My understanding is that this is the next round of currency because they have not yet been printed [TS]

00:13:20   but these are the finalized I think so I think someone's going to pull the plug at the last minute [TS]

00:13:24   and I think it's not going to make I think someone here or pod casting guy now. Gray doesn't like it. [TS]

00:13:30   I'm not you know I'm not saying I don't like it [TS]

00:13:32   and I would I would take this over most currency designs that I see because they just tend to be really boring not just [TS]

00:13:41   you know just just snooze fest. So this is at very least it is interesting. [TS]

00:13:46   I feel like I would totally give it the benefit of the doubt [TS]

00:13:49   and if I saw it on a regular basis I think this might kind of move into Maryland flag territory if I could decide you [TS]

00:13:57   know what I really like. Even though it's not that great. [TS]

00:14:03   On first appearance but I applaud the boldness in design so well done Norway I think your money is interesting [TS]

00:14:11   and worthy of discussion. [TS]

00:14:13   Unlike many countries money which is just totally boring so that is that is the Norway stuff now we're going back to [TS]

00:14:20   your favorite airport in the world I was yes. [TS]

00:14:22   Dulles Airport Dulles that's what is Dallas even Maine which is what is that word I believe it's an old Indian word for [TS]

00:14:30   terrible airport. Now sell US airports. Seems terrible airport airport is the literal truth. [TS]

00:14:37   Well if you have say in the last part because you've been known to have this was the worst airport in the world because [TS]

00:14:43   the temperature wasn't quite right and you don't do it you diminish Mike [TS]

00:14:48   and plain sailing the island a little bit lower than you'd look just a little bit See thing is barely above my head. [TS]

00:14:55   So first of all there is an article which was a survey of people about the best and worst airports [TS]

00:15:03   and Dulles didn't come in as the worst airport but it did take the third worst airport category. [TS]

00:15:12   When you put the list in the next I'm going to look at this list you've got you've piqued my curiosity. [TS]

00:15:16   Yeah I'm calling it up to the white while you're looking that up. [TS]

00:15:20   The three worst airports according to the survey the worst is New York La Guardia Airport which I have traveled through [TS]

00:15:30   it is not a great airport. Is it worse than Dulles I don't know I think I'd have to go back and do a comparison. [TS]

00:15:38   But you know it's pretty bad. [TS]

00:15:40   Second worst is Newark Liberty International which I have never been to [TS]

00:15:45   but as a New Yorker I am required to think that everything in New Jersey is terrible so I'm just going to assume that [TS]

00:15:49   the airport is terrible as well. And then third worst is Washington Dulles. [TS]

00:15:54   These are all American airports by the way people just so you know way on other Canadian ones too. Yeah. [TS]

00:16:00   It's North America because the best airport according to the survey is Vancouver International. [TS]

00:16:06   So can a take that they're second best. Portland Oregon International and third best is Austin's airport. [TS]

00:16:12   I think you'll like this Web site too because I've done the graphics [TS]

00:16:15   and that kind of clicky clicky board star that you like. [TS]

00:16:18   Indeed they have as you know is that I am I'm a big fan and if you notice if you scroll it [TS]

00:16:22   but it doesn't pretend click clack Yeah if you scroll fast enough so well done Business Week on this website about [TS]

00:16:28   frustrating airports but so basically I'm not wrong that Dulles is the worst airport in the world. [TS]

00:16:33   Anyway the thing I want to mention which I actually found very interesting was there is a civil engineer who works in [TS]

00:16:41   airport planning who commented on the last Reddit guy called Cool man Dan. [TS]

00:16:46   Oh three thank you cool man Dan who left a big discussion about like why the Dulles Airport is so bad. [TS]

00:16:55   He left an extensive comment that is for sure. Yeah it is it is very extensive. [TS]

00:17:00   It is very interesting and then it started me down a kind of a rabbit hole about Dulles Airport [TS]

00:17:06   and I just found out some more about some of the things that he mentioned [TS]

00:17:10   but the the most interesting thing is people who go to Dulles. If you ever have to change terminals. [TS]

00:17:18   It is a unique experience because I don't quite know how to describe these things [TS]

00:17:24   but in a normal airport there would be some sort of underground tunnel or perhaps a little tram. [TS]

00:17:30   Now at Dulles they have these things that are like tanks maybe crossbred with apps that are just huge mobile ugly [TS]

00:17:44   industrial buses. [TS]

00:17:46   You're making me want to go there I'm going to get a ride on that [TS]

00:17:49   or an eighty eighty as I would not it's not nearly that cold [TS]

00:17:55   but they basically they're like elevated buses at the level of the term. [TS]

00:18:00   All and they pull right up to the terminal and there's like a docking port for them [TS]

00:18:04   and they shove everybody in like a bunch of sardine sardines [TS]

00:18:09   and then this thing drives across all of the space where the airports are the drives across a space where the airplanes [TS]

00:18:16   are in a trance like across a runway or something I don't know exactly [TS]

00:18:20   and takes you to this other terminal how horribly high off the ground than a lighthouse off the ground. [TS]

00:18:25   Yet they are at airplane boarding height qualify touching the ground what are they like driving on a low sounds bizarre. [TS]

00:18:34   They're they're very strange area. [TS]

00:18:39   Is kind of looks like like a Humvee or something you know I mean like that's why I say It's it's bizarre and. [TS]

00:18:46   The experience of writing in one would have made me think of is the opening scene to Saving Private Ryan and D.-Day. [TS]

00:18:54   Yeah because they lose you win at the back and then it pulls into the terminal [TS]

00:18:59   and is like that front flap just falls forward and everybody has to rush out. [TS]

00:19:05   Like oh nothing is going to shoot me right as soon as the thing opens up just like it is such a terrible terrible [TS]

00:19:12   experience these things are just bizarre [TS]

00:19:15   and they are they seem unique to dollars I've never seen them anyway you know what they remind me of that remind me of [TS]

00:19:19   something I've been on that's much more pleasant at a place called Burger island down in the southwest of England here [TS]

00:19:27   it's a little quaint island with a hotel on it where you can go [TS]

00:19:30   and stay in Agatha Christie used to write books there and it's kind of a deco place but to get over [TS]

00:19:36   when it's high tide you can walk over a low tide but when it's high tide it kind of gets cut off from the mainland [TS]

00:19:42   and they have this little tract on wheels with like a platform and you stand up on the platform [TS]

00:19:49   and the rest of the tractor like goes underwater and you're just standing on this platform that's above the water [TS]

00:19:55   and that's actually really lovely because it's just five or six if you want to and you go into a lovely art. [TS]

00:20:00   OTOH this is kind of this is kind of the bad version of it that you're sharing. [TS]

00:20:06   Yeah Yeah Yeahs it's like it's like you're on a on a cattle car between airport terminals it's just terrible. [TS]

00:20:14   OK So here's the thing. These things are just terrible. [TS]

00:20:18   But as with everything in the universe like stuff just doesn't happen for no reason somebody wasn't just like hey I [TS]

00:20:23   know let's try to come up with a terrible way to transport people from one terminal to another. [TS]

00:20:27   So in my rabbit holing here I came across this video which is kind of worth watching [TS]

00:20:35   and it is the video promoting what Dulles Airport is going to be back in the I think it's like the early sixty's. [TS]

00:20:44   Is this video and OK so this is this is almost going to be hard to describe [TS]

00:20:50   but what they're very concerned about is boy are at airports getting big [TS]

00:20:54   and don't people have to walk a tremendous amount of distance [TS]

00:20:57   and how can we come up with some new system so people don't have to walk as much to get to the airplane. [TS]

00:21:02   So here is the idea is that OK OK instead of having these long long corridors [TS]

00:21:08   and the planes are lined up at each of the land the plane the lined up along these corridors what we're going to do is [TS]

00:21:15   instead we're just going to kind of have one big gathering area for all of the passengers who want to get on planes [TS]

00:21:23   and we're going to make these things that are called mobile lounges. [TS]

00:21:27   And the idea is that there's just going to be this whole big docking stations [TS]

00:21:32   or however many terminal the airplane ever many gates the airport would have that was going to have twenty gates there [TS]

00:21:39   would just be on one wall of the main area twenty doors that you can walk through. [TS]

00:21:45   And each of these mobile lounges on wheels are going to pull up to one of those doors [TS]

00:21:51   and it'll just tell you which door to go through to get to your plane. [TS]

00:21:55   And hey did everybody boards on to this mobile lounge which is then. [TS]

00:22:00   Since at that plane heights going to drive directly to the plain dock with the plane [TS]

00:22:05   and just dump people on their right and when you watch the video it's like that's actually kind of a genius idea. [TS]

00:22:13   This is this could totally work [TS]

00:22:15   and it is also hilarious because the video talks about how absolutely luxurious these things are going to be like. [TS]

00:22:20   Yes but I have written and what write like this is awful I know I know what it is [TS]

00:22:25   but like the shape of things to come [TS]

00:22:27   but in the meantime I'm showing this cartoon guy who's like you know lounging on this couch you know just it looks it [TS]

00:22:33   looks almost comical and the but [TS]

00:22:35   but they are like this is an interesting idea to have a row of basically buses that can dock directly with airplanes [TS]

00:22:42   and drop people off and then you can restructure the whole way the airport the airport is set up [TS]

00:22:46   and it can be much smaller and people have to move around less. [TS]

00:22:49   So we got this interesting idea and so they started to build a list like this. [TS]

00:22:54   But apparently the problem is that this is just before the era of when planes became much bigger [TS]

00:23:00   and also some rule changes came in with deregulation that allowed. [TS]

00:23:06   Basically airliners to change the way they manage their routes [TS]

00:23:10   and so like just as they were building this thing it sort of became obsolete [TS]

00:23:14   and then for unknown reasons they kind of doubled down at Dulles [TS]

00:23:19   and like oh we're going to build another really long terminal that is also for planes that are like a generation too [TS]

00:23:26   old in that are way too small [TS]

00:23:27   and so the bottom line is like it was a really interesting idea at exactly the wrong time and then to try to fix it. [TS]

00:23:35   They thought oh we can double capacity at this airport [TS]

00:23:38   but the thing that you need is spaces for WAY bigger planes you don't need more space for smaller planes [TS]

00:23:45   and so this leads us to today where I found a couple of articles that talk about how like a home of the air traffic at [TS]

00:23:50   Dulles is going down and nobody likes to use it and it's awful and like the whole airport is just in jeopardy [TS]

00:23:55   and I just spent a billion and a half dollars trying to make a train to it. [TS]

00:24:00   Just look like the whole place is a nightmare. [TS]

00:24:01   But anyway I just thought that this mobile lounge notion is an interesting logistics solution to moving people around [TS]

00:24:08   at an airport that was just at the wrong time [TS]

00:24:11   and I love the idea that these horrible horrible transports are actually still called mobile lounges. [TS]

00:24:17   So it's a bit like it's a bit like an English town or something that's you know built for horse and cart [TS]

00:24:21   and cars are being invented in the town planners are going now I'm sticking with I'm sticking with building for horses [TS]

00:24:27   and I think I think they're going to stay in fashion. [TS]

00:24:30   Yeah it's a bit like they realize oh people can travel around more because of all of these cars so we better double the [TS]

00:24:36   number of horse size rows that we you know because people are going to come here [TS]

00:24:40   and they're going to need to get around in our town is like oh no now it's just twice as bad as if you just left it [TS]

00:24:44   alone. So that's kind of what it's like. [TS]

00:24:47   I thought that's a very interesting I'll put the video in the show notes is also just worth watching it like a little [TS]

00:24:52   piece of history is just is very strange to see something that is that old [TS]

00:24:57   and talking about something you know turns out to be a total disaster altogether how many human minutes would you guess [TS]

00:25:03   you spent reading about this airport and researching how bad it was and all those problems. [TS]

00:25:08   Less than an hour less than an hour I know I've spent more than that I don't even care. [TS]

00:25:16   I read I read very fast [TS]

00:25:18   and airports despite the fact that I've just been talking about them for about half an hour are not hugely interesting [TS]

00:25:24   to me. I'm much more of a train person than a plane person but I didn't get as lost as I might otherwise. [TS]

00:25:32   OK I think that's that's good enough for now. Do you want to tell the next item yet. [TS]

00:25:37   Black Mirror is being released on Netflix in the US If you could you couldn't find any less enthusiastic if I mean you [TS]

00:25:45   and I both adore this show and when we when we talked about [TS]

00:25:49   and asked people to watch it for homework so we could talk about even more all of us friends complained that they could [TS]

00:25:55   not watch it in a legal fashion on their continent and. [TS]

00:26:00   This appears to now have been remedied and you can watch it on Netflix [TS]

00:26:03   and you should definitely And also I say they're going to have a white Christmas special here in the U.K. [TS]

00:26:11   So Will another dose of New Black Mirror as well. So it's win win on both sides of the Atlantic but we're on Netflix. [TS]

00:26:19   Go watch it if you haven't. [TS]

00:26:20   I wonder if there are any people that haven't listened to black mirror discussion on whatever episode it was on because [TS]

00:26:28   they couldn't watch the show and they will now have access to it. [TS]

00:26:31   So Wonderful going to get a big spike in listeners to that pod cast as well. [TS]

00:26:35   I'll go check the downloads to see if they move significantly. [TS]

00:26:39   Speaking of our podcast you know we should mention that because people are people are really great like their voice you [TS]

00:26:47   know saying nice things and saying they enjoy listening and they have supporting our advertisers and they are buying T. [TS]

00:26:55   Shirts which is interesting up quite a few people been saying they've been wearing the T. [TS]

00:27:00   Shirt and random people just to come up and say hello to them as you predicted. [TS]

00:27:04   Excellent excellent but we have we have something else to announce [TS]

00:27:08   and I guess that's what we're going to do it like it's an ad because well like advertising ourselves now should we do [TS]

00:27:12   it like should we do like an ad format for this. [TS]

00:27:15   Yeah I guess you know we should we should totally do it that we do like a sound I can't even think what the sound is [TS]

00:27:20   when and that happens. Now going to require you to make the sound. I mention this because like blue blue blue. Yeah. [TS]

00:27:28   Didn't look now it is reaching too far you're first on here first. [TS]

00:27:35   How would you say you were the one who actually works with [TS]

00:27:38   and listens to it can you do off the top you head over to me on the spot goes do they do it right I think that's really [TS]

00:27:46   do so so so with a deadly terror. Here is our ad. This this episode of hello internet has been brought to you by C G P. [TS]

00:28:00   A grey and Brady who now have the capacity for you to support our podcast by by doing something unpatriotic. [TS]

00:28:09   You've got to you've got to start off I was to do what should I say this podcast has been brought to you by. [TS]

00:28:17   You write in that much better. [TS]

00:28:19   I think they were getting really mad here to me will leave this conversation in about us trying to figure out how to [TS]

00:28:25   talk about this and then and then what do we say because I mean we can't just leave it at that. [TS]

00:28:30   Now that's been the clue these ads go right [TS]

00:28:33   and it's over done here it out so so if people go to what's the address is patriot on dot com slash its patron dot com [TS]

00:28:44   slash hello internet and we have set up a picture on the count. [TS]

00:28:47   So some very generous people have asked if they can donate directly to the pod cast and so we have set that up [TS]

00:28:56   and we just we had an announce that we've been keeping it kind of on the down low [TS]

00:29:00   but we thought we should mention at some point so this is us awkwardly trying to figure out how to talk about these [TS]

00:29:06   kinds of things. So our Arbitron is available I think I think describing that as Or could was generous. [TS]

00:29:15   Well it all depends on the editing that does that pretty well. [TS]

00:29:19   But thank you to anyone who has or does support us in that way [TS]

00:29:23   but it will not affect the part of us which is you know business as usual. Free for All. [TS]

00:29:30   Yes that that's always the thing we're not locking up parts of the pod cast. [TS]

00:29:33   None of this is you know this is just a total ick cherry on top kind of thing if you really like the show [TS]

00:29:41   and you want to chip us a buck or something for the show then it's there. [TS]

00:29:44   It's an option and we would very much appreciate it [TS]

00:29:46   but it is by no means mandatory do you think we should have some mechanism whereby someone like particularly likes me [TS]

00:29:52   but doesn't want any money to go to like your parents for example. Right you have some capacity for that. [TS]

00:29:58   Should we just keep it sort of. [TS]

00:30:00   I don't I don't think that I don't think ph on I don't think that's built into the system to say OK to split the money [TS]

00:30:06   between just the two about he's ten back and I want grey to get nine. [TS]

00:30:12   For some of the really mean if it was that you would become a bit of a popularity contest [TS]

00:30:17   and I think the result might upset may say let's not do that [TS]

00:30:20   and I think the result was that everybody loved breeding and it's so I'm glad that that is not that is not part of it. [TS]

00:30:27   OK now we can do the closings [TS]

00:30:30   and OK Now after after that amazing stellar ad repatriating dot com slash are forgotten already how the Internet what [TS]

00:30:39   kind of Internet fms hello internet. It's called Flash hello internet. [TS]

00:30:48   Well that I wonder how that ad where no I hope it was polished and professional [TS]

00:30:53   and thank you for listening to everybody this is our really professional day isn't it. [TS]

00:30:57   Forty minutes to try to get a decent connection up and running in a very very amateur [TS]

00:31:02   and I'm not sure this has been the pod cast in which it was appropriate for us to ask for support from a policeman. [TS]

00:31:08   But this is the way things have turned out. I saw something on Twitter during the week that shocked me. [TS]

00:31:16   Oh yeah a guy I follow a cool C.D.P. Gray said something along the lines of the fact that he has a Christmas tree. [TS]

00:31:25   Yes of all the people in the world of all the people that would not have a Christmas tree you would have been top of my [TS]

00:31:32   list. Hater hater of objects person who does not like clutter. Trinkets masses who pretty much is a bit of a scrooge. [TS]

00:31:47   OK Now the Christmas tree. Yes. I first Scrooge to part to me. [TS]

00:31:55   Secondly I don't understand why is this why this is surprising you Christmas is nice. You don't like. [TS]

00:32:00   Objects and clutter and ornamental things you like things to be functional. [TS]

00:32:04   What function does a Christmas tree in your house what is it look like what do you put on up. [TS]

00:32:08   Explain that I don't see why this is so this is so confusing. [TS]

00:32:13   It's well first of all a Christmas tree is a temporary thing. [TS]

00:32:17   It doesn't stay in your house all year long and so changing stuff up is nice it's nice to have things different. [TS]

00:32:23   And yes even though for the rest of the year I might want my house to be relatively minimal. [TS]

00:32:29   It's nice during the holidays to put up a Christmas tree even if it doesn't serve any function [TS]

00:32:33   or perhaps precisely because it doesn't serve any function other does smell very nice it is actually a living tree. [TS]

00:32:40   Believe it or not it's not even There's not even a plastic tree [TS]

00:32:43   or it was a kind of a living tray it hasn't got its roots in the soil anymore presumably. [TS]

00:32:47   Yeah I mean technically it's a dying on the way. What it is. Yeah. Every Christmas tree is a dying tree. [TS]

00:32:53   Basically you to spend a few weeks watching a living thing die before your eyes. [TS]

00:32:57   Yeah that's pretty much how what's your decoration style. [TS]

00:33:03   What's the plan of attack for you and Mrs Gray when trimming your tree. [TS]

00:33:08   Well OK So ideally what we what we would like to do and I think it'll work out this year [TS]

00:33:15   but I found this bug as it got up it'll it'll have already occurred. We like to decorate on December fifth. [TS]

00:33:21   Half of my my family background is Dutch So St Nicholas Day is kind of a big deal there. [TS]

00:33:25   So I think that's also just a kind of nice. [TS]

00:33:27   You need some arbitrary starting point [TS]

00:33:29   and so I think that is a nice starting point for the official beginning of the Christmas season. [TS]

00:33:35   I mean of course in the real world it ends like seconds after Thanksgiving is over. [TS]

00:33:41   You know is particularly American like Christmas decorations just go up immediately [TS]

00:33:44   but I think in the gray household December fifth is the starting point. [TS]

00:33:49   That's when we will decorate you know there's the usual stuff you put of tinsel but bubbles on the tree. [TS]

00:33:54   I think we have to get a new star this year I think our star last year didn't work out very well. So here's the thing. [TS]

00:34:00   He goes for like a dense dense decoration or kind of a bit more sparse I guess. [TS]

00:34:05   Should I just send you a picture of my Christmas tree when it's done. [TS]

00:34:08   Would you like that I don't even know how to describe that. [TS]

00:34:11   Who takes who takes the lead role on design issues because I imagine in my head You're the first person in the house [TS]

00:34:19   but I will arrange the lights because you have to arrange the lights in a particular way. [TS]

00:34:23   If they're not if they're not even if it's just it stares you in the face because it's in the main room of our house. [TS]

00:34:29   If you don't get the lights evenly distributed it's not going to work on your wife to do that if we can both work on it [TS]

00:34:36   together which is what we do. [TS]

00:34:37   You made it pretty clear then that you do the lugs we both do the life [TS]

00:34:41   but sometimes the lights are not to my liking so they need to be rewritten. [TS]

00:34:47   But we both put up together it's like a fun family activity we both decorate the Christmas tree [TS]

00:34:52   and sometimes I rearrange stuff. [TS]

00:34:54   Sometimes my wife rearrange a stuffed lever [TS]

00:34:56   and I don't know yet because I just honestly don't see why this is as rising. Well OK I stand corrected. [TS]

00:35:05   OTOH I will take a picture of our totally normal probably slightly boring because there's on coming to London [TS]

00:35:11   and in a week or tell you so I expect to see the Christmas tree [TS]

00:35:16   and my inviting you over to my house I don't remember this I think I think that's pretty much what just happened. [TS]

00:35:23   I don't think that's what happened though I think getting back to you. Do I will tell you what they're all about. [TS]

00:35:30   Well I show me a Christmas tree [TS]

00:35:32   and I will bring a decoration to put on because the I will have to get something in your house for this [TS]

00:35:37   and he now it's starting to cross the line then we need to discuss boundaries and when you're [TS]

00:35:43   when you're not looking I'll just move a few lights to the left. [TS]

00:35:46   Decoration gifts that's an obligation that you're imposing on the other person no no no. [TS]

00:35:51   While somebody else clothing you know [TS]

00:35:53   or like some kind of decoration for the House it's no good you know you can't do that. So get it off. [TS]

00:36:00   No I will send you a nice picture. So last time we spoke I was trying to get into India. Oh yeah yeah. [TS]

00:36:09   Everybody wants to know did you make it to India. [TS]

00:36:12   I did make it into into how did how did how did you end up because you didn't have the right number of days to get [TS]

00:36:17   string pulled for you because you're an important chemistry video guys i OS There are not many things I'm good at [TS]

00:36:23   but getting things like doing stuff like that I'm quite good at figuring out it's kind of a journalistic thing you [TS]

00:36:31   develop over the years just figuring out how to get stuff done get into things I managed to find a way [TS]

00:36:40   and it didn't involve some illicit border crossing [TS]

00:36:42   or anything I didn't have a visa resilience all sounds remarkably vague [TS]

00:36:46   and I want more details I think it sounds cold [TS]

00:36:48   or if I just make it sound like I you know makes me sound a bit more James Bond if I leave it at that. [TS]

00:36:54   Let's just say it totally is hands James Bond but that's what I want to burst the bubble right now [TS]

00:36:58   but I mean happy with this James Bond battle so I'm I'm I'm going to caper. Let's just say I got in. [TS]

00:37:05   OK OK you can have a James Bond moment thank you. The reason I went was for the Commonwealth. [TS]

00:37:12   Science Conference which was a conference held in Bangalore with sort of scientists from all around the world came from [TS]

00:37:20   Commonwealth countries. [TS]

00:37:22   The main reason I was there was making a few videos [TS]

00:37:24   but I was hoping Professor Martin Poliakoff who is the chemist in my chemistry videos. [TS]

00:37:28   He's also the foreign secretary of the Royal Society [TS]

00:37:32   and one of his roles in that capacity was to make like the final speech at the end of the conference because he's got [TS]

00:37:38   this kind of video reputation now because of periodic videos. [TS]

00:37:42   He quite likes the idea of sharing a video at the end [TS]

00:37:46   and so I went along to help him make this video at the end something he could show [TS]

00:37:50   and you know finish the conference nicely Oh wait wait so you had to make a video about the conference while you were [TS]

00:37:56   at the conference. Yes Yes So this is a. [TS]

00:38:00   OK this is an this is an easy thing for me obviously you know I'm a journalist and I had four [TS]

00:38:04   or five days to do this it was not a problem. [TS]

00:38:07   OK so anyway another I had an I had an idea at the last minute so I suggested to the professor he was on board with it [TS]

00:38:15   and when I said to him was I think through the conference through the four [TS]

00:38:18   or five days of the conference you should just take a whole bunch of selfies just take selfies with everyone you make [TS]

00:38:24   everything you do just go crazy and then we'll turn that into a big montage [TS]

00:38:30   or mash up video at the end of the conference. [TS]

00:38:34   So that's what we did [TS]

00:38:35   but then I had to sort of as a second idea so it wasn't kind of introspective here we all are at the conference. [TS]

00:38:41   A bunch of our famous scientists talking about science. [TS]

00:38:44   I put out an appeal to people via you know videos [TS]

00:38:47   and social media around the Commonwealth who do science whether they're students [TS]

00:38:52   or professional scientists academics commercial whatever to send me selfies of themselves like in the lab [TS]

00:39:00   or doing science and we would make that part of this final video. [TS]

00:39:04   So the video had one component which was here at the conference having a great time here S O phase in the second [TS]

00:39:11   component is. [TS]

00:39:12   And Meanwhile elsewhere in the Commonwealth science is happening you know every minute every day sort of thing. [TS]

00:39:18   The sun never sets on the Commonwealth science mba. [TS]

00:39:22   One the most one of the more interesting things to me was people's reaction to being asked for photos from around the [TS]

00:39:27   commonwealth which was very mixed and I can't and I haven't been able to fully interpret it [TS]

00:39:33   and you being Mr geography and Commonwealth and maps might be able to help me. Mix How so. [TS]

00:39:38   Well first of all some people were very angry. They felt excluded. [TS]

00:39:44   I was accused of xenophobia by not accepting photos from everywhere. [TS]

00:39:48   This to me seems crazy because this was a Commonwealth science conference. [TS]

00:39:54   So I think this is an example of a time where you can ask which pictures from people from the Commonwealth. It would. [TS]

00:40:00   The crazy to then show pictures of people from the U.S. [TS]

00:40:03   and Mexico and Brazil [TS]

00:40:06   when the whole purpose was that this was sort of a celebration of silence around the commonwealth. [TS]

00:40:10   Yeah it would be like if America was having a science in all of the states conference [TS]

00:40:15   and people got angry because you're not accepting photographs from everywhere else in the world yes. [TS]

00:40:19   So so anyway the mom on your side with that I care. Anyway thank you for that. [TS]

00:40:26   I also received an incredible number of pictures from people not in the Commonwealth clearly [TS]

00:40:33   and I don't know if this is because people just didn't pay attention [TS]

00:40:36   and thought it was an excuse to send me a selfie that we're trying to sort of circumvent the rules [TS]

00:40:41   and get into the video knowing perfectly well they're not in the Commonwealth [TS]

00:40:46   or people just don't know what the Commonwealth is and they just are not and I will come of this [TS]

00:40:50   but I'm probably And so he is Freddy from Belgium. Any thoughts on that. [TS]

00:40:55   How how famous is the Commonwealth outside the Commonwealth. [TS]

00:40:59   I'm not sure how famous the Commonwealth is inside the commonwealth I think I think this is this is a bit of a bit of a [TS]

00:41:09   problem I would say at least in my experience teaching English kids with there was a huge amount of confusion about the [TS]

00:41:16   Commonwealth you know I really felt that there was there was a ton of confusion primarily about whether [TS]

00:41:23   or not the United States was in or out [TS]

00:41:25   or about just who was even in it at all I would say kids had some sort of dim notion that it was it was the British [TS]

00:41:32   Empire. [TS]

00:41:33   But even then it's a bit I think it's a very unclear organisation [TS]

00:41:39   and so I am I am not the least bit surprised that lots of people would be genuinely confused about whether they are in [TS]

00:41:46   or not in the comp that's interesting to me. [TS]

00:41:48   I mean people outside the commonwealth I understand [TS]

00:41:51   and are saying John all of his excellent video that the Commonwealth Games which I highly recommend [TS]

00:41:58   and you can put it in the show. [TS]

00:42:00   Before everyone tells us to watch it and that I'm surprised the people in the Commonwealth wouldn't know that arena [TS]

00:42:06   and I think maybe this is betraying my astray Liam ness for a minute here because obviously I'm a Strat [TS]

00:42:12   and grew up in Australia and Australians are obsessed with sport and winning sport things [TS]

00:42:20   and obviously the Commonwealth Games was a chance every four years for us to win a bunch of sport stuff so the [TS]

00:42:26   Commonwealth Games is a really big deal in Australia and so you know this is a you know it's like it is like [TS]

00:42:32   and another version of the Olympics but not as important. [TS]

00:42:35   So because the Commonwealth Games are such a big deal I think we sort of know what it is and who's in it [TS]

00:42:40   and who we're going to be up against [TS]

00:42:41   and what our chances of winning are because we're not going to have to bait this person because he's from America we [TS]

00:42:46   will have to beat this person because he's from Scotland. [TS]

00:42:50   So I think maybe a stray Indians because of the Commonwealth Games [TS]

00:42:53   and their obsession with sport I may be more aware of it than some other Commonwealth countries that are not as sports [TS]

00:42:59   centric. Just put it out there. [TS]

00:43:03   Are you putting out the the incredibly contentious statement that Australians are super into sports [TS]

00:43:09   and would therefore know all the nations they need to crush in the Commonwealth Games. [TS]

00:43:14   Yeah I don't think that's hugely can I get there I think it's seems quite likely that the average Australian might know [TS]

00:43:23   way more Commonwealth nations than a random citizen somewhere else in the Commonwealth. [TS]

00:43:28   But in place of that I came up with that idea. [TS]

00:43:33   I would back that because of the sport connection I mean that you know the Commonwealth of Nations is such a such a [TS]

00:43:39   strange thing. What do you do exactly. [TS]

00:43:42   Organisation I was actually trying to find like the the Wikipedia summary [TS]

00:43:48   and you know how we could be there we had that first paragraph which tries to some things. [TS]

00:43:53   And so here is the Wikipedia first paragraph or Commonwealth of Nations the Commonwealth of Nations. [TS]

00:44:00   Is an intergovernmental organization of fifty three member states that were mostly territories of the former British [TS]

00:44:07   Empire the Commonwealth operated by intergovernmental consensus of the member states organized through the Commonwealth [TS]

00:44:13   Secretariat [TS]

00:44:14   and non-governmental organizations organized through the Commonwealth foundation that is as clear as it's going to get [TS]

00:44:21   on what is it that the Commonwealth AG is that's pretty it's pretty dry as worse as the article goes on longer so it is [TS]

00:44:28   a bit hard of like what do you do. Commonwealth nothing about sport not in that first paragraph. [TS]

00:44:34   Some of these it's an excuse [TS]

00:44:36   and it's an excuse to have a sporting event every four years in which you're more likely to win medals at the Olympics. [TS]

00:44:46   Come OK Commonwealth Games does not appear until the third paragraph. [TS]

00:44:52   Well there you go there because they are missing the boat a bit. [TS]

00:44:56   But the thing is according to this the Commonwealth Games are there to promote [TS]

00:45:02   and enshrine the values in the Commonwealth charter which I'm sure you are well aware of since you are so into sports. [TS]

00:45:09   Oh yeah I actually have to come in with just a test so you don't know until I left. [TS]

00:45:14   Yeah that's what I'm thinking at this most into the Commonwealth Games. [TS]

00:45:17   You guys surely know the whole commonwealth charter. [TS]

00:45:20   All right I'm sure it's a riveting document I'm sure it is as well riveting and very important and widely. [TS]

00:45:28   So I met Prince Andrew the Queen's child most famous probably for being married to thirty [TS]

00:45:37   and he he has an unfair reputation he's got lousy nicknames like am I was Andrew [TS]

00:45:44   and stuff because he travels around a lot as this business envoy. I think that's unfair. [TS]

00:45:49   I have a lot of respect for the guy he goes to a lot of events that he doesn't have to go to for the good of his [TS]

00:45:58   country and the Commonwealth. So I don't want to bad mouth him but he would not pose for a selfie. [TS]

00:46:06   He actually said I don't do Sophie's So I got to hear him say selfie but he wouldn't. [TS]

00:46:15   But we did get some pictures and footage of him so he helped us out and looking at all the speeches [TS]

00:46:19   and things that man has to sit through and all the boring meetings he has to go to you know you can call him [TS]

00:46:25   and Miles Andy all you want you know he doesn't have to go to all those places you have to think of the royal family as [TS]

00:46:33   like diplomats. [TS]

00:46:35   I think that that is primarily what they are they like public relations [TS]

00:46:40   and they're a kind of diplomat who can who can be a little bit above the day to day for a lot of goings on in the [TS]

00:46:47   political world and like you said boring boring meetings and stuff I just I could never ever get through alive. [TS]

00:46:56   I would just fall asleep and not make it so. [TS]

00:46:58   He is known for getting in an above average number of rounds of golf when he does visit these places. [TS]

00:47:04   He doesn't mind that you know he doesn't want to go. So anyway he's in the video but he wouldn't do a selfie. [TS]

00:47:11   He doesn't do Sophie's I bet he's been asked loads of times. Yeah I but the frequency of that request is going up. [TS]

00:47:17   Yeah exactly. Exactly he has to you know I think it's got to a point where public figures have to have a Sophie policy. [TS]

00:49:16   Speaking also face. [TS]

00:49:18   Well I received a very interesting e-mail yes from someone who watches some of my videos [TS]

00:49:27   and therefore saw the request for selfies but also tells me he's a big fan of hello internet. Let me call this up. [TS]

00:49:37   This is from I don't know I'm supposed to say his name or not his name is nine [TS]

00:49:41   but I'll just call him Hopi because that's what everyone knows us OK. [TS]

00:49:46   If you look out officially another lives though if you're trying not to say they know man he's an Anonymous. [TS]

00:49:53   He's not anonymous as you're about to find out. When when the word selfie was. [TS]

00:50:00   They had a word in one the word of the year last year and all that sort of thing. [TS]

00:50:04   Hopi is the guy credited with first using it OK in two thousand [TS]

00:50:11   and two forum he posted a picture of himself with kind of a cut lip it had a I think it had a drinking accident. [TS]

00:50:18   Yeah yeah I think I've seen this. [TS]

00:50:19   Yeah and he put that here I am and you know I took a selfie [TS]

00:50:23   and that is considered the defining moment in the creation of the word Sophia is the thing everyone pins it. [TS]

00:50:30   Hopi got in touch [TS]

00:50:32   and said you can use my Sophie if you want because you know how how I'm supposedly the guy who invented the word. [TS]

00:50:38   I was really excited by this. [TS]

00:50:40   Hello Hopi fellow but he went further I basically I got in touch [TS]

00:50:44   and said we can't leave it at this I want to know everything. [TS]

00:50:49   And he took me quite literally and wrote me a really long email back telling the story of how it happened [TS]

00:50:55   and what happened with the journalists afterwards and things like that. [TS]

00:50:59   I hope he does not claim to have invented the word. [TS]

00:51:01   He thinks it was just a word him and his mates used and was already in usage [TS]

00:51:05   when he thinks it's ridiculous that it's attributed to him he is. [TS]

00:51:08   He shares your attitude to the media and journalists [TS]

00:51:12   and I think that attitude was enhanced by his experience with think COTA the inventor of Sophie he he had he said [TS]

00:51:22   people like journalist were trying to contact his parents on Facebook and there was some ridiculous interviews [TS]

00:51:27   and they'd start interviewing him and he'd say well I didn't really invent and then that try [TS]

00:51:31   and keep the interview going for another three minutes or so. [TS]

00:51:34   He had people investigating his past posts and trying to sort of analyze him and stuff like that [TS]

00:51:40   but basically I think the thing I took away from what he he took from a is that journalists are really lazy [TS]

00:51:47   and the media is a bunch of rubbish and I think that pretty much sums up your attitude to journalists as well so you [TS]

00:51:54   and hope you have something in common. [TS]

00:51:55   I can go along with the sentiment of that you know what's funny that even though he made. [TS]

00:52:00   So we're really clear that he didn't invent the word. He says I don't think I coined the word. [TS]

00:52:06   I might have I guess no one has contacted me claiming that I invented it [TS]

00:52:10   but it's such an obvious word whoever did invent it probably doesn't remember anyway so that's what he says. [TS]

00:52:16   So even though he doesn't claim to have invented it [TS]

00:52:19   and he probably didn't I still am calling him the guy that invented the word selfie for the sake of my anecdotes [TS]

00:52:24   and when I say get him out of Maine guess who listens to the podcast. The guy who invented the word selfie. [TS]

00:52:30   Yeah I think that's fair. I think that's totally fair. I feel like what is it in dictionary they have. [TS]

00:52:35   So the earliest known use of words. [TS]

00:52:38   You'll see sometimes I feel like that's what this is that the dictionary is not saying oh whatever example they have is [TS]

00:52:44   the first time that word was ever spoken. [TS]

00:52:46   They say this is the first documented use of that word [TS]

00:52:49   and this is this is functionally the starting point of our history of the word. [TS]

00:52:53   So he is the starting point for the history of selfie. [TS]

00:52:56   CO I find it so funny because he wrote in one of the e-mails on MY GOD Brady e-mailed me I'm a huge fan especially the [TS]

00:53:02   pod cast. I'm going to have to humble brag at work about it. [TS]

00:53:07   He could not be more excited than I am and he about may I am the excited one here all right all right of the road. [TS]

00:53:15   Sophie get a room you do not with those clips of you saying the picture disgusting. [TS]

00:53:22   Things Hopi and it's nice to hear from you. And big opera star a member of the Commonwealth. [TS]

00:53:31   Yet another thing that happened in India that was quite interesting. [TS]

00:53:37   You have you heard of Raman spectroscopy you probably have been a science picture. Yes I have I have yes. [TS]

00:53:43   So this was I was invented by an Indian scientist Raman and he spent much of his career in Bangalore [TS]

00:53:49   and his institute is in Bangalore and we went along and filmed there. [TS]

00:53:53   So they said Come along you can make a film with a little. [TS]

00:53:56   We've got like a little museum or collection so we were really excited to see it. [TS]

00:54:00   Thinking are they going to be all these treasures from Rahman's life and we went there [TS]

00:54:05   and it was quite it was a very impressive collection of minerals and rocks over three [TS]

00:54:10   or four rooms that had been collected by Rahman over the course of his life. [TS]

00:54:16   But I have to admit it wasn't what we expected we were hoping for more to do with the man himself [TS]

00:54:20   and to tell his story not just his rock collection that he left behind. It didn't feel like we connected with him. [TS]

00:54:27   But anyway we thought well this is what we've got. Let's make the best of it. [TS]

00:54:31   So we're making a video and the professor was going along and talking about some of the items of interest [TS]

00:54:35   and why he collected this and why this piece of rock was interesting etc etc and we'd finished up [TS]

00:54:42   and we were just about to leave and this guy lucky the curator was a real rock hound [TS]

00:54:47   and there's nothing he didn't know about rocks [TS]

00:54:49   and showing this rock collection off was obviously you know it was a big deal to him he really enjoyed it [TS]

00:54:54   and that's all he cared about that's all he wanted us to say [TS]

00:54:57   and then just as we were leaving there was like a stick in the corner of the room. [TS]

00:55:02   We had steak and I said what's that steak over there [TS]

00:55:06   and he said Oh that was Rahman's walking stick that he used all his life that was his personal walking stick [TS]

00:55:10   and it got left behind and you know that was like his trademark thing [TS]

00:55:15   and I was like well you never want to you know tell us. [TS]

00:55:18   But to the rock guy it didn't occur to us that this would be interesting. [TS]

00:55:23   Selection was the steak and we got to hold his walking stick [TS]

00:55:25   and off one of walking sticks a really personal thing like when people have died [TS]

00:55:32   and you hold a walking stick more than almost anything often walking sticks are really interesting things so anyway we [TS]

00:55:39   got his walking stick. Well thanks for that that was an unexpected bonus. [TS]

00:55:44   And then just as we were going to leave again Martin turned around and said to him what happened. [TS]

00:55:49   Rahman's Nobel Prize that he won he was I think he won the one hundred thirty Nobel Prize. [TS]

00:55:53   What happened to his prize and they go I said oh I've got that in a cupboard in my office. [TS]

00:56:00   What would you like to see that. After two hours of looking at rocks we were like we would like to see that. [TS]

00:56:06   Thank you very much. So he went to discover that the back of this thing is not on display. [TS]

00:56:12   He looks this covered out of public view and pulls out his gold Nobel Prize medal [TS]

00:56:19   and like the official certificate that he got given you know in Sweden with all that beautiful calligraphy one of a con [TS]

00:56:25   pieces and I guess they go this is Nobel Prize. [TS]

00:56:29   So it's so it's so this became clear this was how we were going to have to conduct the rest of this. [TS]

00:56:34   This filming that we just had to kind of interrogate this guy to find what other treasures he had like a locked locked [TS]

00:56:41   away that he didn't think were worthy of display that he didn't think it was nearly as interesting as rocks. [TS]

00:56:47   Rahman had because he was obsessed with spectroscopy. [TS]

00:56:50   He had this tiny little pocket spectroscope he always kept in his coat like a little handheld thing like you know the [TS]

00:56:55   size of a pack of a lifesavers or something to look at flowers and things when he was walking around in gardens. [TS]

00:57:01   Another really intimate object that he always had on him so I had that locked in the cupboard away from do you put it [TS]

00:57:09   up there I let you go you can look at that too if you want I don't know why you don't want to just look at more rocks [TS]

00:57:13   but. [TS]

00:57:15   It was a really good example of [TS]

00:57:16   when someone's too much of an expert in something it has too much of a passion for one thing they kind of you know [TS]

00:57:23   when is it don't see the wood for the trees or whatever it is. [TS]

00:57:27   So I got to hold a Nobel Prize and I sent you a picture didn't I did he did. I said more glamorous than a GO button. [TS]

00:57:34   Yes I was impressed by your picture of you holding a Nobel Prize. They look good that suits you. [TS]

00:57:41   Thank you I think I think I think it is I think it's a good look. [TS]

00:57:45   So while I was holding Roman's Nobel Prize medal I understand you have if you got your hands on a new Kindle [TS]

00:57:52   or something I don't I don't know if you actually want to print it up but. [TS]

00:58:01   My my black because you going to go crazy now that I have some idea I have some thoughts on the Kindle. [TS]

00:58:08   First of all how come you've got a new Kindle now when Christmas is a question to speed up a Christmas present. Why. [TS]

00:58:18   Well because it gives it gives your wife something to buy fully [TS]

00:58:22   but she doesn't need to get me anything I think I can get myself a Kindle it seems seems reasonable. [TS]

00:58:30   Do you do Christmas presents. Yes we do. [TS]

00:58:35   I don't know how successfully we always do them but we attempt to do Christmas presents [TS]

00:58:42   but yeah I you know I feel like there was a new Kindle out I wanted to see what it was like [TS]

00:58:50   and sold it at the end tell me what what's a coat is a got some name is it like the Zed X. [TS]

00:58:56   Three thousand hours of you know the Kindle was a call like some stupid name on the Kindle. [TS]

00:59:01   Ladies oh wow this is the one this is the one we were talking about a couple episodes ago I think which is called the [TS]

00:59:06   Kindle. They have to think about it really hard. It is called the Kindle voyage Yes I always want to call the Voyager. [TS]

00:59:15   That's it we can talk about how we better spend the next twenty minutes talking about Tech's justification [TS]

00:59:20   or OK OK OK I promise not to talk too much about text justification I can promise only the amount that it deserves [TS]

00:59:31   which is quite a lot but then again this is this is a record this podcast a little bit early [TS]

00:59:39   and so I'm working on a review of this can that which will probably be out before this podcast so just let the [TS]

00:59:43   listeners know [TS]

00:59:44   but I think it's a good thing that I want to highlight here is not the justification of text which is terrible [TS]

00:59:51   and still unfixed. People have heard enough about that. [TS]

00:59:54   It's like if I kept talking about humble brags at a certain point people just don't hear about that and you know my. [TS]

01:00:00   Anyone on the justification but they got his Kindle [TS]

01:00:05   and I swear this device has single handedly made me doubt the entire Amazon company. [TS]

01:00:18   Take a look at this Kindle and it's like I don't know if Amazon is going to be around in a few years. [TS]

01:00:25   Really this thing is so terrible combined with a bunch of other stuff about Amazon as like it's like my whole world [TS]

01:00:32   view on Amazon has completely changed and there are many things that I don't like. [TS]

01:00:37   But let me just let me just try to narrow my focus to one thing. OK OK So here he is here's a little thing right. [TS]

01:00:46   One Kindles many generations ago they had this amazing feature which was a button that you could press to turn the page [TS]

01:00:56   and they had buttons on either side and they made a satisfying click sound and all was good. [TS]

01:01:01   Turning a page is a pretty lie. [TS]

01:01:03   That's a that's a pretty fundamental part of reading a book you might say it's a core feature for a reading experience. [TS]

01:01:11   Yes they play Woody Allen talk. Yeah it's like OK Number one can you see the words right. [TS]

01:01:19   But I give you the words right OK OK Well now we need a way to turn the page. [TS]

01:01:25   So you're right it's probably second consecutive being able to read before I read here. Yeah. [TS]

01:01:33   So they had to satisfy a little button press. [TS]

01:01:36   Yeah on the Kindle which was great [TS]

01:01:37   and then the thing is made is nice to have something a bit tactile even though everything's going eighty's [TS]

01:01:42   and now here it completely is. [TS]

01:01:44   And the selling point of the Kindle is like hey look we're not trying to be a general purpose tablet. [TS]

01:01:48   We are machine dedicated for reading books [TS]

01:01:51   and so we can have a little button on the side where the i Pad is never going to have a little button on the side [TS]

01:01:56   and this is like a competitive advantage but then Amazon decided. [TS]

01:02:00   As for inexplicable reasons they said you know those great buttons on the side that everybody loves which every of you [TS]

01:02:05   mentioned as being a great experience. [TS]

01:02:06   You know we're going to take those out and instead we're going to give you a touchscreen. OK That's awful. [TS]

01:02:12   That was the last candle that I had because I don't understand this at all but whatever. [TS]

01:02:17   OK so the new Kindle is out the Kindle Voyager. [TS]

01:02:20   Let me guess on this one you can't even see the world that's is like it is inches away from that right. [TS]

01:02:26   So OK so here's here's what they said like oh I know people loved that page tourney thing and everybody complained [TS]

01:02:35   and we took it away. So let's give it back to people what I know what we can do. [TS]

01:02:41   Let's make a button better do is we're going to take the worst part of a button [TS]

01:02:47   and combine it with the worst part of a touchscreen [TS]

01:02:51   and make a brand new input device on the bezel which I don't even know what they call it. [TS]

01:02:57   But here here imagine here is the user experience for this is like these regions on the side of the Kindle that you're [TS]

01:03:03   supposed to press to turn the page. [TS]

01:03:06   So imagine taking your thumb [TS]

01:03:08   and pressing it against a completely immobile surface like a huge slab of marble on the floor of a palace [TS]

01:03:18   or something like that. [TS]

01:03:19   Really solid [TS]

01:03:20   and in order to turn the page of your book instead of a nice click button instead you have to smoosh your thumb against [TS]

01:03:27   a completely rigid surface and when you have smudged it enough the page will turn. [TS]

01:03:33   So no give no sounds nice just it is it is baffling to me that it will it will do this bizarre little vibrate thing as [TS]

01:03:42   well. [TS]

01:03:42   So every time you turn the page it goes right to let you know oh yes we have registered that you have compressed your [TS]

01:03:49   thumb hard enough against the side of our screen in order to turn the page it's just and like OK so I took this out. [TS]

01:03:57   Let's give this a fair shot. I really like. We want to love the Kindle. Soak it out. I load up a book on it. [TS]

01:04:03   I press the button once on this are not the button I Press T V A mobile slab on the side once [TS]

01:04:10   and I go like I swear to god it was physically uncomfortable and then it vibrates in the slicks in the startling way. [TS]

01:04:18   Who what person what what designer. Presumably Jeff Bezos saw this thing. [TS]

01:04:24   Who came up with this at Amazon who on earth approved of this at Amazon. [TS]

01:04:29   Why was there nobody who said hey you know be a good idea. A button like we used to do that everybody loved. [TS]

01:04:35   I just I swear to god the existence of these pressure sensitive regions. [TS]

01:04:41   Honestly makes me doubt the judgment of everybody in upper management [TS]

01:04:45   and Abba's on the fact that this thing came into existence just blows my mind [TS]

01:04:52   and so I thought like OK OK maybe my first experience with this is just horrible. Let me try to give it a good go. [TS]

01:04:59   So I sat down and like usually I read in the twenty minute bursts. [TS]

01:05:02   So I sat out like OK I'm going to read for twenty minutes I'm going to use my Kindle I'm going to use a little button [TS]

01:05:07   thing that they want me to use on the side I could not make it twenty minutes using this thing because my son started [TS]

01:05:14   to get a little bit physically uncomfortable and I realized oh oh what this thing actually is. [TS]

01:05:20   It's a repetitive strain injury creation device. [TS]

01:05:24   That is the function that this thing serves like I can feel it's like I've had repetitive strain injury before you know [TS]

01:05:30   what like the warning signs are like it's like oh yes pressing my thumb several thousand times over the course of a [TS]

01:05:38   year against a completely rigid surface is going to give me repetitive strain injury guarantee it [TS]

01:05:45   and so that's that's what the sting on the side is it's just baffling to me. [TS]

01:05:48   I don't know how anyone could ever look at it and think it was a good idea. [TS]

01:05:51   It's just it's just so crazy that I feel like well well Amazon it's been a good run but I. [TS]

01:06:00   Think this is where we have to part ways. You've got to wonder whether we would have turned a Muslim had invented it. [TS]

01:06:06   I know it's just like oh I know we'll make it we'll [TS]

01:06:08   but we'll put spikes all around the edge of it so it was really grippy on the road. [TS]

01:06:12   Like I don't know it's just what are you going to do. [TS]

01:06:15   Because like when you're up in a star rating on your i Pad What will he go from here. [TS]

01:06:20   Yes So basically I was hoping to get this Amazon Kindle before my trip to Alabama. [TS]

01:06:24   But because Amazon also hates the U.K. [TS]

01:06:26   and Ships everything later here I didn't get it in time [TS]

01:06:29   and so I ended up actually using my i Pad to read on the trip [TS]

01:06:33   and I discovered many things that I do like about i Books. [TS]

01:06:36   It's still not an ideal solution in very many ways [TS]

01:06:39   but it's more a question of like OK well there's a solution which is not perfect for me but it's fine. [TS]

01:06:44   And that actually has many advantages over Amazon system. I would I would want. [TS]

01:06:49   I would want to use Amazon system in an ideal world [TS]

01:06:52   but just like you're demonstrating to me Amazon that you have lost your mind. [TS]

01:06:57   And like I want you to do these things like fix the left justification [TS]

01:07:01   or to fix all of these various things about your system. [TS]

01:07:04   But like this physical piece of hardware demonstrates to me that you are just never going to do this. [TS]

01:07:11   It's almost like it's like asking someone to love you right like oh please Amazon please love me [TS]

01:07:17   and do the things that I want to write and they give you a turd in a bag and give you say at that point. [TS]

01:07:24   Well it's not really Amazon's fault it's your fault. Yeah and that's kind of how I feel at this moment. [TS]

01:07:28   Like I can't take this abuse anymore. [TS]

01:07:32   This Kindle is just so awful so I ordered the return box almost immediately like I cannot believe this thing it's just [TS]

01:07:38   terrible Wow returning I wouldn't have if I don't like something I just put it in a shelf [TS]

01:07:42   and never use it you know she returned stuff. Well it's expensive enough that it's worth returning. [TS]

01:07:48   I wouldn't stick it in the shelf [TS]

01:07:50   and then Amazon gets to keep my money I feel like I need to send a message like this this is this is too much. [TS]

01:07:55   Amazon is too much. I mean there's just a million things about it which are terrible. [TS]

01:08:00   But that button is just like the embodiment of terrible decisions which just makes me doubt the whole company is this [TS]

01:08:08   just is this is this just gray fussiness or have you been hearing other people talk about this [TS]

01:08:14   but in the same way I was I was curious because I was like Is this just me do I have a defective one. [TS]

01:08:19   Change Settings on this which you can there's a whole bunch of settings you can try to change is a whole bunch of [TS]

01:08:23   different ways you can try to adjust this [TS]

01:08:25   but universally It has been panned I haven't seen anybody who's written any kind of review that says that they like it [TS]

01:08:31   but if you if you ever are in a store and see one of these things just touch it once [TS]

01:08:35   and it's like it's just terrible it's lame I will put a thumbtack on the edge of the screen [TS]

01:08:41   and say Oh you do this to turn the page. It's just equally useless thinking Grayle what's going on. [TS]

01:08:49   Just for the sake of argument Tell me why you think it got approved. [TS]

01:08:52   What happened is that just some did one person think oh I never you know we've got to do something different if we [TS]

01:08:57   don't do something different will die and that this is a compulsion to do something different or. [TS]

01:09:02   Well here's an oath I try very hard when things seem strange to imagine what's happening in this other entity [TS]

01:09:12   and this is just my breaking point with Amazon it's like I I cannot understand [TS]

01:09:17   or I cannot come up with any kind of rational reason for why they are behaving the way they are [TS]

01:09:21   and the other thing was I think I think you saw it [TS]

01:09:24   but I tweeted their last bizarre product announcements which was that Amazon echo thing that is the infamous freakiest [TS]

01:09:31   weirdest promotional video I've ever seen I don't know what's going on so I'm going to say that that for me the Kindle [TS]

01:09:39   voyage is like the third strike in Amazon has lost its mind. [TS]

01:09:44   Strike one was the Fire Phone which I didn't think much of when it came out [TS]

01:09:49   but then I was just curious to see what people think of it [TS]

01:09:52   and it's just like unusably awful is just terrible terrible piece of equipment is like you can even use this with a [TS]

01:09:59   phone. [TS]

01:10:00   As a phone even if you wanted to strike two then was the Amazon echo thing [TS]

01:10:07   and strike three The Kindle is like these three things in a relatively short period of time just just seriously make me [TS]

01:10:13   doubt whoever is making decisions over there. [TS]

01:10:15   The Echo thing for those who haven't seen the video I will put it in the in the show notes. [TS]

01:10:19   I almost dare you to watch the whole thing. [TS]

01:10:22   It is even the commercial is so awkward it's so painfully awkward someone watched it [TS]

01:10:30   and signed off on that someone said OK yes we are willing to release that to the public. [TS]

01:10:34   Yeah it's the video is basically this family who gets a device [TS]

01:10:38   and you can all it is is it's basically Siri that plugs into your wall that isn't a phone that listens to you twenty [TS]

01:10:44   four hours a day from a particular location in your house brother or something. [TS]

01:10:48   Yeah and you can ask it all the same questions that you can ask Siri. Set a timer. [TS]

01:10:53   How many cups in a quart or whatever you know there's like a minimally useful stuff but not anything shockingly useful. [TS]

01:11:01   It's like your phone can do all of this except that your phone is on you all the time. [TS]

01:11:05   It's like who is the person this product is for I just I simply cannot imagine [TS]

01:11:10   and then they have the most terrible commercial in the whole world [TS]

01:11:13   and there's a little detail which again is one of these things with like somebody over there who just lost their mind. [TS]

01:11:19   So I have asked several people this when they watch the commercial I go what is the name of this product. [TS]

01:11:27   Everybody gives the same wrong answer because this little family in the commercial sets up this product which is called [TS]

01:11:34   Amazon echo but this is like quick little two second thing where they say oh [TS]

01:11:38   when you set it up you have to give it a special name and it only listens to you after you say that name [TS]

01:11:43   and so they name the thing. [TS]

01:11:45   Alexa I think and so then you have this commercial which is supposed to be selling a product [TS]

01:11:51   but they must say Alexa a hundred times. [TS]

01:11:54   Yeah and they say the name of the product Amazon Echo may be five times and so everybody think. [TS]

01:12:00   It's Amazon's new Alexa Prot is like no this is just an incidental thing. [TS]

01:12:03   But who could possibly like what person creating a commercial says how can we say the product name less. [TS]

01:12:11   How can we figure out how to make this more confusing. So it is like the echo is crazy. [TS]

01:12:16   The Kindle Voyager is just completely non-understandable [TS]

01:12:21   and they keep selling it in this way like oh it's a specially designed for someone who makes books like have you seen [TS]

01:12:26   someone read a book. Have you ever read a book. Product is clearly not designed for anybody who reads books. [TS]

01:12:33   I don't understand it at all. I don't understand who the Echo is for. [TS]

01:12:36   I understand how on earth you can be trying to sell you a terrible phone [TS]

01:12:40   and you can even sell it now they've reduced it to one dollar to buy the phone it's just like it's embarrassing [TS]

01:12:45   and so these three things together I feel like I don't even feel safe having my digital books in Amazon's ecosystem. [TS]

01:12:53   Putting aside the whole just a justification issue [TS]

01:12:55   and all the other problems they have is like I can't count on you to fix anything. [TS]

01:12:59   I don't feel good about buying books in your ecosystem anymore and I'm going to give up on trying to make you love me [TS]

01:13:06   or I think you just you're off the deep end [TS]

01:13:08   and we need to separate so you know what the heck coming back for just a second. It's so funny. [TS]

01:13:15   If you had made that video and you said Brady I've just made a spoof video and I want you to watch. [TS]

01:13:22   I would think that was the best video you've ever made. I say you're a legend. [TS]

01:13:27   It's funny it's clever it's like it's so good at being bad right. That is genius. [TS]

01:13:34   Yeah the only problem with that ad is that it's not a joke. Yeah. [TS]

01:13:38   That it's genuine it it's almost it has that like Saturday Night Live feel to it exactly like my family is just a [TS]

01:13:46   little weird and a little off [TS]

01:13:48   and one of the things I love is OK so again try trying to envision this product if you haven't seen the commercial it [TS]

01:13:54   is a black cylinder that spies on you that you have to plug into the wall. But even that seems like a joke. [TS]

01:14:00   I know it's like all they need is to give it a menacing red ring around the edge right. [TS]

01:14:05   Like that it's just it's unbelievable. [TS]

01:14:09   But but then the whole like they keep they keep doing like point of view shots from the echo [TS]

01:14:15   and in the way they do the camera work. It also looks like a joke because it's like the echo pops up. [TS]

01:14:21   So they show the couple sleeping in bed [TS]

01:14:23   and the camera pans down so suddenly the Echo is in front of the camera like looming over them looking at them sleeping [TS]

01:14:29   in bed together like you think the jokes going to continue [TS]

01:14:32   and like into in the next scene the husband will come home from work early [TS]

01:14:36   and his wife will be in bed with the echo of yapping like yeah like that's where they're going or that [TS]

01:14:40   or the next scene is him going to be driving in the car and they show the echo like buckled into the passenger seat [TS]

01:14:45   or something like this just like you can't believe it's real and it's just awful to watch. It's awful to watch. [TS]

01:14:51   But that but again it's like people signed off on this. So they built it. [TS]

01:14:56   They've made it they've sold it they hired a team of people to make his god awful commercial. [TS]

01:15:01   Somebody watched the commercial [TS]

01:15:03   and said let's let's let's run that on the internet like that is why people who give any money for making that people [TS]

01:15:10   were given money for that. Well I mean if those actors I feel like hey I was on I'll take your money. [TS]

01:15:14   But someone at Amazon should look at that thing [TS]

01:15:17   and just say like we're going to get slaughtered on the Internet people are going to laugh at us nobody's going to buy [TS]

01:15:21   this ridiculous product because it doesn't serve any need for any human on the face of the earth. [TS]

01:15:28   But who should get this Amazon echo instead of just getting an Android phone. Nobody no one anywhere. [TS]

01:15:35   I will accept that if you make a good enough ad and trick me maybe I will think I need one. [TS]

01:15:42   Like people will buy anything if it's promoted well enough and well marketed and is made to look cool [TS]

01:15:48   but then they've made it they've made a product that I don't really want. Look even worse. [TS]

01:15:54   Yeah so I think an interesting exercise. I showed this to my wife like you have to watch that. [TS]

01:16:00   You're not going to believe this and I had to preface it with. It is not a joke. This is for real. [TS]

01:16:06   And then as interesting comparing contrasting. [TS]

01:16:08   I'm not trying to hold Apple up here is as an amazing example but we went back [TS]

01:16:12   and we said what were the first ads for Siri When Siri first came out [TS]

01:16:17   and it is it is really interesting to watch the two of them side by side [TS]

01:16:23   and to see how Apple tries to do a better job of convincing you that this thing will be useful. [TS]

01:16:30   And part of it is not overselling it. [TS]

01:16:32   Part of it is just look you can just quickly ask your phone what the weather is and it tells you. [TS]

01:16:36   And they also have a little emotional resonance part at the end of the Siri ad where they show oh I don't know a blind [TS]

01:16:43   person using their phone right like Apple always knows how to get you and them and they show it actually being. [TS]

01:16:50   Useful [TS]

01:16:51   and the interesting thing is that they show Siri doing probably eighty percent of the same things at the Amazon Echo [TS]

01:16:58   does but it's in a thirty second commercial and the Amazon echo thing is five minutes long [TS]

01:17:05   and in the Echo conference like it's the center of everything that's like this freak that's come into the house that [TS]

01:17:10   they're all coming to say and yeah like some girl my girl even says at one point you could Amazon echo R.S. [TS]

01:17:15   Knows I'm sorry she says Alexa has really become part of the family [TS]

01:17:19   but really is that really like giving up if you start saying that your phone has really become part of the family. [TS]

01:17:26   You have some problems with your family right. [TS]

01:17:29   Or we've You were one of one of the two and it's so oversold [TS]

01:17:33   and it's like their whole lives revolve around this it's just it's just awful. [TS]

01:17:39   It's like I said the family don't want a baby so if you if you buy this product you will become like them [TS]

01:17:45   or like one of the selling points is is the children can use it to passive aggressively make fun of each other [TS]

01:17:50   when there's like the daughter asks Alexa to define annoying like yeah that's a real selling point there Amazon people [TS]

01:17:57   people are oh I wish I wish. If I could I could turn it over to a machine making fun of my sibling. [TS]

01:18:04   That be great I'd love to buy that. [TS]

01:18:08   But anyway all of this is why I think I was on it like I'm worried about you Amazon [TS]

01:18:13   but you know I'm going to keep buying all of my physical items from them because I don't like to go to stores [TS]

01:18:18   and they ship stuff to my door like they do that great of a man their whole their whole electronics ecosystem. [TS]

01:18:25   It just seems like it is in terrible terrible danger of whoever is running it and whoever is approving it. [TS]

01:18:34   This episode of how the Internet has been sponsored by Harry S. [TS]

01:18:37   Which is the shaver of choice for hello internet co-host Brady Haran. That's me. [TS]

01:20:58   Harries dot com And thanks to them for sponsoring our show once more. Now let us talk about Star Wars. [TS]

01:21:10   See I don't know that I want to talk about Star Wars. [TS]

01:21:13   Well this is we have already we haven't had this discussion yet but we've kind of half basically [TS]

01:21:19   when the new the new Star Wars trailer teaser trailer came out and did it come around Thanksgiving other on [TS]

01:21:26   and they came out and I watched and you [TS]

01:21:30   and I both love Star Wars so I sort of said well obviously we're going to talk about this in the next podcast because [TS]

01:21:37   we're huge Star Wars fans and there's a new Star Wars teaser trailer. Yeah and I'm not I'm not I'm not up for this. [TS]

01:21:45   No I you know I don't I don't like spoilers. [TS]

01:21:49   You had this is it like I knew you didn't like spoilers [TS]

01:21:51   but I assumed you would have watched this partly because it was unavoidable [TS]

01:21:55   and partly because this film's not out for you and this is like a Take this is a take. [TS]

01:22:00   East of the forbidden fruit has to be watched and so I said let's talk about it [TS]

01:22:04   and he said I want what you sow before we before we thrash it presumably you still haven't watched it. [TS]

01:22:11   I have not I have not watched it. I have not seen any spoilers. [TS]

01:22:16   I you know I get you seem very insistent that I should watch this. Well first of all let me tell you what I think. [TS]

01:22:24   Let me tell you some reasons I think you should watch it. [TS]

01:22:29   You say it could be dreaming your argument is seeing anything from the film [TS]

01:22:35   or spoil the film in some way even even the most subtle thing that doesn't tell explain the story gives some paces away [TS]

01:22:42   and you want to go into this film in December next year completely cold that that would be ideal. [TS]

01:22:50   Yes I think that I know you think that is the correct way to see a film and I respect that. But I think you're wrong. [TS]

01:23:01   I think trite I think teasers and trailers are part of the cinematic experience just as much as popcorn [TS]

01:23:10   and opening credits [TS]

01:23:12   and all the other all the other parts of films I don't think a film is just about the ninety minutes [TS]

01:23:18   or two hours you see on that given day. [TS]

01:23:21   I think trailers and hype and expectation and teases and things I don't think leaks [TS]

01:23:28   and spoilers as a part of the experience but I think a trailer made by the director [TS]

01:23:34   and released by the director who is in artistic control of this process he wants that to be part of the experience that [TS]

01:23:43   is part of the experience [TS]

01:23:44   and I think you are denying yourself part of what the maker of this film wants you to experience. [TS]

01:23:50   But I'm not watching this. [TS]

01:23:51   I feel like I don't know who you are right now didn't have we had conversations where you agree that knowing anything [TS]

01:23:57   about the movie spoiled it that. There are new mailers are spoiler filled. I don't know why I feel right. [TS]

01:24:06   Insistent trailers are my favorite thing. Like I've mentioned before in the park as my dad used to be a film critic. [TS]

01:24:13   Yeah and one of the things that we would occasionally get to do it was like once [TS]

01:24:17   or twice a year they would get in all the trailers for the film and their little tiny special cinema [TS]

01:24:24   and you show him all the trailers for the films that were coming in and you just sit there for an hour [TS]

01:24:27   and watch trailers back to back. I loved that one. [TS]

01:24:31   I'm the guy that refuses to miss the trailers of the cinema [TS]

01:24:34   and gets there twenty minutes early so he can watch the trailers [TS]

01:24:36   and people talk during the trailers I get really angry and shoot them dirty looks. [TS]

01:24:41   Trailers are my favorite things I think I think they're I think they're great [TS]

01:24:46   and I understand I understand they have this potential to ruin if done badly. [TS]

01:24:52   A bed trailer can ruin a film [TS]

01:24:54   and if a trailer gives away the whole film it's probably a sign that it's a bad film anyway. [TS]

01:24:59   So you're telling me that this isn't a bad trailer. [TS]

01:25:02   That's not what I'm saying I'm saying you should watch it and you said to me you said to me he doesn't have spoilers [TS]

01:25:11   and of course if it shows one frame of the film it contains spoilers to some extent so I'm not going to I'm not going [TS]

01:25:20   to sit here and say because it's a teaser and it doesn't tell you the plot. [TS]

01:25:24   I'm not going to say it doesn't contain spoilers of course. Of course by its very nature it contains spoilers. [TS]

01:25:31   OK so I'm not going to make you that promise [TS]

01:25:34   but I do think you should watch it if only because I so want to talk to you about it. [TS]

01:25:41   And I think we'll be talking about Star Wars for the next year before this film comes out [TS]

01:25:46   and I also think you're just making life difficult for yourself because people aspire you think people are talking [TS]

01:25:51   about it people analyzing it to death and you're going to get snippets here and there anyway. [TS]

01:25:56   You're not going to be able to avoid when you open the front page of read. [TS]

01:26:00   Something happens you know and you may as well know what they're talking about I think you should watch it. [TS]

01:26:07   OK well I feel like this is a big moment in our relationship. [TS]

01:26:12   Brady I say that because it's against my better judgment I am going to follow your advice before you do that because I [TS]

01:26:24   you know I don't want to jeopardize that for an hour now you walk it back I mean I don't know if that's being a thing [TS]

01:26:29   to say well this is going to say this is this is it that's why this is an important moment. [TS]

01:26:33   Tell me what could happen when you watch it. That would make you upset with me. Spoilers. [TS]

01:26:39   I just told you there are spoilers [TS]

01:26:42   but you're also telling me that I should watch it anyway so I am I am trusting your judgment that even though there [TS]

01:26:48   will be spoilers that the experience of watching this would be better [TS]

01:26:54   or a life where I have watched the trailer before seeing the movie is a better life than where I have not watched the [TS]

01:27:00   trailer before seeing the movie. It's a better life for me because I can talk to you about it. [TS]

01:27:06   And I like talking to you about stuff. But but let me you go you will be upset afterwards. [TS]

01:27:15   There are things that will be spoiled and you will grumble for a year about it and tell me that it was wrong [TS]

01:27:24   but you will be wrong [TS]

01:27:27   and I will have been the right thing to have done for you saying that I will be wrong about my opinion. [TS]

01:27:37   Yes I don't for the first time. OK Brady sent me this thing on my message. [TS]

01:27:45   OK I'm going to I'm going to dim the lights in my recording because I'm going to make this like an event. [TS]

01:27:50   OK I've sent on a message. I'm bit nervous now but you should be and you should be all right. If you felt this way. [TS]

01:29:15   It's the deed is done. I'm here. Yeah yeah I know you're there and they are there. [TS]

01:29:38   I'm not sure what to think right now. I think I don't know just what you what you feeling. [TS]

01:29:48   First of all it's impossible not to be excited by Star Wars trailer. But you know it's like. It does. [TS]

01:30:00   As a matter of moments ago we were talking about Amazon and like on this this abused spouse [TS]

01:30:07   and I'm like I'm leaving I can't make Amazon love me. [TS]

01:30:10   Yeah [TS]

01:30:11   but with Star Wars it like I will always want Star Wars to love me as soon as you see the new trailers like all of that [TS]

01:30:19   abuse of the three prequels. It just feels like but this time it'll be OK. [TS]

01:30:26   I mean to be fair I was really excited by the Phantom Menace trailer and what happened there. [TS]

01:30:31   Oh yeah I remember watching that Phantom Menace trailer over and over [TS]

01:30:36   and over again like you know the greatest thing ever [TS]

01:30:38   and this trailer is I have the same feeling like my heart is lifted by the Star Wars music. [TS]

01:30:46   It's impossible not to like watching the trailer even though it is definitely filled with things I would regard as [TS]

01:30:53   spoilers. [TS]

01:30:54   But OTOH I said that I said that I know but it's impossible not to be hopeful and I find myself filled with a new hope. [TS]

01:31:05   The next movie will be good and I do I do. I put some trust in J.J. Abrams So I. So before we talk a bit more about it. [TS]

01:31:18   You've watched it once. Yes. What's like your overall impression what's you feeling about it. [TS]

01:31:23   Like what like compared to what you expected because obviously for a week we've been talking about it you had no idea [TS]

01:31:30   what was in that what would what would happen. What's your reaction. [TS]

01:31:32   Is it what you expected is it not what you expected is it better than you thought Is it worse. [TS]

01:31:38   Like it's what I would expect the first trailer to be very brief scenes of just things in the movie [TS]

01:31:44   and things you might be excited to see when they first pop up on screen but we're going to show you them right now. [TS]

01:31:48   You know that's that's that's what I kind of expect the first trailer to be I think you know it's it's about time that [TS]

01:31:56   they've gotten some hand guards on the lightsabers. I'll tell you that I had a little fun. [TS]

01:32:00   Oil around the edge of the light saber. You know it's a good idea. [TS]

01:32:03   So these are amazing technological developments now having hand protectors for your lightsabers So I like that I'm a [TS]

01:32:09   fan of that I think that's a good design. [TS]

01:32:12   It looked like there were just two coming out I might have more than just two. So you had a real like a disloyal. [TS]

01:32:17   Yeah like sensors had three hundred years ago. That's the kind of thing I might want. [TS]

01:32:22   I'm dangerous I think it looks like something you could you hand could slip up and touch very easily. [TS]

01:32:27   Well I have now of course now I have to go through and watch the trailer frame by frame [TS]

01:32:30   but it looks like there was a little bit of metal that your handle could bump up against I don't I'm sure that the [TS]

01:32:35   nerds have analyzed this quite quite in-depth well before before to give you my story within a few days before this was [TS]

01:32:45   released. I sort of didn't know it was about to be released but obviously most people did. [TS]

01:32:49   And people started releasing spoof ones like OP fantasy ones [TS]

01:32:54   or sort of you know fan type trailers of what I hope the trailer would say and I also didn't know this was happening [TS]

01:33:01   and I was on Facebook a couple of days before this trial came out [TS]

01:33:04   and I got tricked into clicking on one of the fan made ones not knowing it was fan made and it was really good. [TS]

01:33:15   And I watched and I thought this is also this is going to be pretty and I was really really pleased [TS]

01:33:23   and there was something that didn't quite seem right that I can remember what it was [TS]

01:33:26   but it was there was enough to make me go into the comments and it very quickly became apparent that it was fake. [TS]

01:33:32   And I felt like they have a dish and like in hindsight you know there were probably lots of things I didn't realize [TS]

01:33:38   but I obviously had my god up then [TS]

01:33:41   and then this one came out so I started watching not being entirely sure if I was watching a real one or not. [TS]

01:33:51   And I would have been more likely to have thought this one was fake then the first one I watched [TS]

01:33:57   and a lot of people be very positive of that. It's trailer and I'm less positive about it. [TS]

01:34:04   There are a few things about it I did like and like you I have supreme confidence in J.J. Abrams. [TS]

01:34:13   I'm sure the film will be excellent. It will certainly be better than. [TS]

01:34:17   Let us not speak the name of those three films that were that were created. [TS]

01:34:23   Yes yes [TS]

01:34:24   but there are a few things about this that are slightly out of me I don't know if you want to watch again there are [TS]

01:34:30   only seven saints in the trailer. There are seven clips. [TS]

01:34:33   Well I don't know if you want to adapt a feeling of feeling very conflicted at this moment [TS]

01:34:39   and it's again it's a funny thing because I've been talking about these movies coming out in exchange [TS]

01:34:45   and I've been telling myself you'll go into these movies thinking that it's a kind of alternate universe that it's not [TS]

01:34:52   Star Wars and if you enjoy these movies you know that's great and then you know maybe they can be Star Wars [TS]

01:34:59   but go into it. Treat him as a kind of different different kind of movie like a rebirth. Yeah. [TS]

01:35:06   Or something like that [TS]

01:35:07   and again as soon as the trailer starts playing like in my heart of hearts like you know you can't do that you know [TS]

01:35:13   it's really Star Wars and you're going to go into it thinking that it's really Star Wars and so on [TS]

01:35:18   and so I worry I worry. [TS]

01:35:22   And it's not I don't want to be banned I understand it one of the things I worry about slightly is like I think I have [TS]

01:35:32   a lot of trust in J.J. Abrams mainly because of the first Star Trek movie. [TS]

01:35:37   Yeah the new one the two thousand and nine Star Trek movie I think. Yeah that is by no means a perfect movie. [TS]

01:35:45   I do have problems with that movie but overall like that is that is an exciting movie [TS]

01:35:51   and I think I pulled off what was just an impossible task of making you really believe in. [TS]

01:36:00   In Star Trek making you believe in that world you know the casting was perfect everything about that was just great. [TS]

01:36:05   So I [TS]

01:36:06   and I would have thought oh man whoever has to do the Star Trek reboot this project is just doomed no one can pull this [TS]

01:36:14   off successfully and I would say you know the movie has some minor flaws but overall that was a two thumbs up. [TS]

01:36:21   Total success. And so that's why I feel like a very happy that J.J. [TS]

01:36:26   Abrams is doing the Star Wars because I feel the same thing that it's like this is an impossible situation. [TS]

01:36:32   This is this is a no win scenario. It's like a Kobayashi Maru kind of scenario. [TS]

01:36:39   But if anybody can pull it off it would be J.J. Abrams. [TS]

01:36:42   So I am hopeful but now I would like to know what is it what is it about the trailer that you don't like. [TS]

01:36:48   Always is going to go through the same by saying and say oh I thought of saying you have a list of the six. [TS]

01:36:54   OK let me pull it up here because I yeah I definitely have some thoughts. [TS]

01:36:58   Yeah my very first thought watching the trailer is is helmet lifts stormtrooper. I don't know I don't know about this. [TS]

01:37:07   Well my feeling about I mean I don't want to speculate about the plot [TS]

01:37:14   when that guy pops up into his screen that made me think it was a joke that actually made me think Saturday Night Live [TS]

01:37:21   like like you know you think everything's OK So when this is going to be a Star Wars and then some dude pops up like [TS]

01:37:28   and then I guess when I re watched it he does look very serious and worried. [TS]

01:37:31   Yeah he does he does look very serious and we're right. [TS]

01:37:34   I mean to be fair my assumption is that he's not a stormtrooper he's a guy in a stormtrooper outfit [TS]

01:37:40   and I think a lot of people have ashamed that you know the raid on the Death Star in a new hope with you know John [TS]

01:37:46   and Luke and that that's by the by. [TS]

01:37:49   My first impression was when he pops up and gives you a scare and he's like got this startled look [TS]

01:37:55   and he's so close to the camera is that it was a joke it was a parody. [TS]

01:38:00   So straight away I was suspicious the first time I watched it. [TS]

01:38:03   I've moved on from that so that so that was that was my thought on that same the next st with the like that soccer ball [TS]

01:38:12   droid made me reinforced my thinking that it must be a joke because it's such a silly droid [TS]

01:38:20   and it's something we've never seen before so I was thinking Oh that's silly and I was pretty disappointed by that. [TS]

01:38:25   So it was in a way it was not from to the next st had those kind of troopers on our land coming down in stormy weather [TS]

01:38:35   and it was quite moody and that was quite good and that was more what I expect from J.J. [TS]

01:38:40   Abrams it's going to you know we're going to have some darkness and some lens flare [TS]

01:38:44   and things are going to be cool like a shot. [TS]

01:38:47   Yeah it's gritty and it's cold and people get themselves in a tizzy about stormtroopers vs clone troopers [TS]

01:38:54   and that makes me really upset because people don't understand the difference tween claim troopers and storm troopers. [TS]

01:39:00   This is getting into fan territory we don't need to go into every here for a while. [TS]

01:39:04   Yeah so they're trying to change race on a cold that Sainz Conoco [TS]

01:39:08   and that gives me hope that he's getting away from the George Lucas static boring shots [TS]

01:39:13   and we're going to have you know it's going to be modern filmmaking. Yet there was not a single couch in this trailer. [TS]

01:39:19   Yeah exactly so that was a Good then we have a woman getting on a spade in the desert [TS]

01:39:27   and that was pretty you know pretty typical Star Wars not sounds fun. I didn't lie. [TS]

01:39:32   I'm neutral on that shot and looks fine but what you really do need someone to talk to you watched [TS]

01:39:40   and then we had the X. Wings going over the water. [TS]

01:39:46   Cool you know it's a shape we all love in a cool new environment and [TS]

01:39:51   and it wasn't in the desert which relieved me because I don't want a whole film on top twenty No I shimming it's tech [TS]

01:39:57   twenty No I don't want a whole film on a desert planet right. That was cool that we had the light saber. [TS]

01:40:03   Then with a menacing character who I think we're all the shaming is a villain we don't know that he's wearing a hood [TS]

01:40:09   and he's got a red light saber So that's what's language for villain [TS]

01:40:13   and part of that there is definitely a bit of metal that his hand can so that that the design thumbs up people have [TS]

01:40:21   been quite mixed in their reaction to that design. I think it looks pretty cool. [TS]

01:40:25   And again it's a really cool saying I like the stormy weather and I like the way it's shot. [TS]

01:40:30   So that's good and then we have the Millennium Falcon at the end and a lot of people got very excited by the show [TS]

01:40:38   and most people I've heard from seem to like [TS]

01:40:40   or I do not like it that the million Paquin should not be doing that in my opinion. [TS]

01:40:47   I know I know it does some pretty cool things in the asteroid belt and you know it's a pretty cool ship [TS]

01:40:52   and don't get me wrong it's my favorite ship in the world. No You know it's my favorite ship. [TS]

01:40:58   It just seems too nimble for me. Yeah I have had the same thought of many of you know really what it really is. [TS]

01:41:04   So here's an it's a freighter. [TS]

01:41:06   It's a bulky thing and it shouldn't be capable of such close quarters nimble flying [TS]

01:41:13   and people think it's great to see the Millennium Falcon really you know strutting that stuff [TS]

01:41:18   but I don't think the Millennium Falcon should be doing those kind of maneuvers in that way so I was not comfortable [TS]

01:41:24   with that [TS]

01:41:24   and I hope the minium Falcon doesn't have its identity changed because obviously jobs is quite keen on the Millennium [TS]

01:41:30   Falcon and you know it from the from the things he's said and shined. [TS]

01:41:36   He's quite came to see this ship making a comeback [TS]

01:41:40   but I hope he doesn't change it too much I like it is a big bulky freighter that you know you can you know you can it's [TS]

01:41:49   got some tricks up its sleeve in a very handy stuff when it has to be but let's not turn this into a little you know F. [TS]

01:41:55   Eighteen Hornet or something that's that's exactly what you got more personality. [TS]

01:42:00   The freighter and like you say is clunky doesn't handle the bass doesn't go to lightspeed immediately. [TS]

01:42:06   Yeah if it's if the Millennium Falcon is just doing all kinds of tight maneuvers like any fighter ship it's totally [TS]

01:42:14   uninteresting and we can have X. Wings doing this we have all kinds of other ships. [TS]

01:42:17   Look at the look at the design of that thing in a Humvee it's not supposed to be really nimble. Exactly. [TS]

01:42:24   And one final thought is a first for a film that's clearly going to be so expensive and so meticulously done. [TS]

01:42:32   I think the way the name of the film comes up against the Star Wars logo at the end is really amateurish [TS]

01:42:39   and crappy So it's not a surprise that got past some designers He said Yeah that's a good way to show the name of the [TS]

01:42:45   film. [TS]

01:42:46   It's funny you mention that because I [TS]

01:42:49   when it came up I had a moment of not being able to read it very well because I wasn't even sure what the name was [TS]

01:42:56   and it took it took a moment longer to read it because it does come up in a strange overlapped with the yellow where it [TS]

01:43:03   just looks like it looks like a dog's breakfast. [TS]

01:43:07   And it was another thing that made me think it was fake the first time I watched it I was like you know I know proper [TS]

01:43:12   film company would do so anyway they are there they're my thoughts but I still am excited about the film. [TS]

01:43:20   I'm sure be better than the rubbish that was served up to us for the for the prequels [TS]

01:43:25   but I was not you know I wasn't as enamored by the teaser trailer as some people were just I'm still feeling mixed [TS]

01:43:36   about having watched this. [TS]

01:43:37   I'm sorry man I just had to you had to do it for me I know I know [TS]

01:43:41   and I can already tell we're going to end up talking about this a whole a whole lot more offline than even just what [TS]

01:43:48   we're discussing now and then we'll also talk about it more in the podcast. [TS]

01:43:51   Considering your job to have to watch that I get so the thought of getting paid for to have my say. [TS]

01:44:00   War's experience potentially diminished from what it could otherwise be. [TS]

01:44:04   You were never going to go a year with avoiding everything because people are going to make means unfunny jokes. [TS]

01:44:09   People have already released a George Lucas special edition of the trailer which you have to watch that that is crammed [TS]

01:44:16   more crap into every shot like you really ruined and no less it is not like OK as I will be able to enjoy the truth [TS]

01:44:23   and that you know that that is a plus sign. [TS]

01:44:25   Yeah I don't know that it's funny you mention the Millennium Falcon though the one thing again while in J.J. [TS]

01:44:33   Abrams I trust. [TS]

01:44:35   One thing straight from the start which has worried me was even when the casting was announced [TS]

01:44:41   and that was impossible to miss that piece of information. [TS]

01:44:44   Yeah and I love the original Star Wars movies [TS]

01:44:48   but I worry about how much of an inclusion of the old characters there's going to be like they released that photo [TS]

01:44:58   which again was impossible to ignore. Of the of the cast sitting around J.J. [TS]

01:45:03   Abrams [TS]

01:45:04   and everybody trying to do the criminology about where are they sitting you know who's most important depending on how [TS]

01:45:09   close they are to J.J. [TS]

01:45:10   Abrams the sun king of this picture and I just I just worry that the old characters will will dominate it too much [TS]

01:45:21   and that was that like [TS]

01:45:22   when I hear the casting it's like oh God I know I don't know how much is it going to be these three particular people [TS]

01:45:30   again save the universe. [TS]

01:45:32   I just I don't know that not all the things we want to take from the fact none of them are in the tazer a lot about us [TS]

01:45:38   just on purpose to kind of Dole things out over the course of a year [TS]

01:45:43   and everyone so I want to say Luke Skywalker again and Han Solo again. [TS]

01:45:46   Yeah I think it makes sense not to have them in there but I just [TS]

01:45:49   when I was in the Millennium Falcon I got that was kind of reminding me of oh right that you know they're going to [TS]

01:45:54   bring back this ship and you know probably Han flying it again maybe you know who knows. [TS]

01:46:00   But it's a bit like how do I want to do I want to revisit that in again. [TS]

01:46:05   No because it was really awesome the first time [TS]

01:46:07   and the Star Wars universe is so huge you can have other stories take place [TS]

01:46:14   and still feel like that is one of my major concerns about the movie. But again I will trust J.J. [TS]

01:46:20   Abrams and I will certainly be let down later. [TS]

01:46:23   OK thanks for making me watch it rating Well hopefully you watch it again now [TS]

01:46:28   and will have more to talk about I know you are now is now going to say that we're done recording I'm going to watch as [TS]

01:46:32   high as thirty times in a row of course. [TS]

01:46:34   And putting on a show right now but like now I can't wait to get off the phone with you OK OK. [TS]

01:46:40   Repeat repeat repeat and keep watch. [TS]

01:46:42   Well before we do that speaking about characters [TS]

01:46:45   and things like that as well there is one more thing I want to tell you about and I've kept a secret. [TS]

01:46:50   OK And I resisted putting anything on Twitter even though I know you avoid Twitter [TS]

01:46:55   and don't say things I twenty I didn't want you to see this. So I've I've kept a secret. [TS]

01:47:03   Last night I had dinner and spoke for hours with someone amazing. I'm just letting the moment hang OK. [TS]

01:47:18   OK Should I give you a clue who this person was. Well that was my phone not in airplane mode so ruining my moment. [TS]

01:47:31   I'm very sorry [TS]

01:47:32   and it's because of all our technical problems that I had on that I had an airplane loaded to send you a message so we [TS]

01:47:38   could get in touch. [TS]

01:47:39   OK OK I'm listening [TS]

01:47:41   and what I actually know speaking of funds I'll send you a picture of me meeting this person that's how I will reveal [TS]

01:47:46   it to you. OK I'm just getting my phone because the pictures on my site and making me nervous here. [TS]

01:47:54   Really you have no reason to be nervous and I don't like surprises. Here we go. [TS]

01:48:03   Here is made with the person who is this. [TS]

01:48:07   Then I hear that might they want to tell people what you look at the picture you're looking at is it is it is you in a [TS]

01:48:16   low to high. Yes smiling yes. With an elderly elderly gentleman who was also smiling. Yes who looks familiar. [TS]

01:48:29   How would you describe him. His appearance he has gray hair. Yes he looks like you. Plus fifty years. [TS]

01:48:36   Actually he's a lot bigger than me. He's looking down. Oh. How is it vater. Yes Oh wow. [TS]

01:48:53   I had dinner with the Veda David Prowse Oh wow well this was last night. Last not very cool and very cool indeed. [TS]

01:49:05   So it looks like Vader in fifty years. I don't mind being told that they are. And a former bodybuilder. [TS]

01:49:16   How did how did this come to happen it was a there was a fundraiser at Bristol I live on the edge of Bristol it was [TS]

01:49:23   like a sort of big charity dinner posh not with all sorts of things going on [TS]

01:49:28   and for various reasons nothing to do with me than to do with my wife I was set at like the prestigious top table [TS]

01:49:37   and again I don't know if that is because Word guy I was a Star Wars fan so I don't know if it was a coincidence mode [TS]

01:49:45   was because word got out that I was a Star Wars fan that I was put next to David Prowse [TS]

01:49:50   and his wife because he was like a guest of honor there of course he's a he's from the Bristol area [TS]

01:49:56   and as a supporter of his. So he came along as part of. [TS]

01:50:00   As support for this so I was sat down next to him and I sort of [TS]

01:50:06   and I knew I was going to be there for the next few hours like you know you can imagine I was in heaven [TS]

01:50:11   and I said to him right at the start and introduced myself [TS]

01:50:15   and he introduced himself he was a completely lovely man completely lovely and his wife was completely charming [TS]

01:50:23   and I was introduced to him and I sort of said to him I'm going to tell you I'm a big Star Wars fan [TS]

01:50:30   but I said I promise you I won't talk about Star Wars too much and I think you and I don't like that. [TS]

01:50:36   Yeah well you can't avoid the topic and he said oh no it's no problems at all his wife kind of pulled me aside [TS]

01:50:42   and said Don't worry he completely loves it and I know so I said to him I broke that promise [TS]

01:50:48   and talked about Star Wars all the time. [TS]

01:50:51   The other promise I made to him at the start was I won't ask for your autograph because I already have your autograph. [TS]

01:50:57   I really haven't signed up late a picture signed by him. [TS]

01:51:00   I also broke that promise because that's how I ended up stealing his name tag at the end of the night that he was on [TS]

01:51:06   his on the seating next to us you know we have our names close like a wedding you have little names on tags and I [TS]

01:51:11   and he said David Prowse M.B.A. [TS]

01:51:14   Please go on and I got him to sign that for me and also for his wife to sign hers from Mrs Veda. [TS]

01:51:21   She said it was the first time she'd ever been asked to sign her name so I said don't ever sign again so I've got the [TS]

01:51:26   only Mrs Vader autograph. So it was really good it was great. [TS]

01:51:33   So I spent I spent the night talking about Star Wars with data that is pretty cool [TS]

01:51:38   and brilliant You look so happy of this picture and I look like that right now talking about it was a perv. [TS]

01:51:48   He's such a top man as well he's like such a gentle giant [TS]

01:51:51   and he just spends all his life now being Darth Vader you know going and signing autographs [TS]

01:51:55   and so I think that's what he does he's got some other things going on. [TS]

01:52:00   Life is just a Star Wars now and it was brilliant it was brilliant. So they are very cool very cool. [TS]

01:52:10   Brady had dinner with later if that is not the title of this podcast [TS]

01:52:16   and it's going to be like a spoiler for who the person in the picture is you love spoilers so we might as well put it [TS]

01:52:22   up front. Yeah exactly. So you have to lead with now the old breed. [TS]
