318: Creepy Hug

come see the Cassidy and comfortable and [TS]

many other podcasts at the now hear this [TS]

festival in anaheim california October [TS]

28 through 30th go to now hear this vest [TS]

  dot-com [TS]

the incredible number one day [TS]

  temperature 2016 [TS]

welcome back everybody to be [TS]

uncomfortable i'm your host Jason L were [TS]

here with another edition of our video [TS]

game club we do this from time to time [TS]

when there's a video game that's not too [TS]

hard so i can play it [TS]

joining me to talk about the video game [TS]

by danish studio play dead [TS]

called inside are the fine following [TS]

  people [TS]

dan morgan hello hi good to be here on a [TS]

game related podcast it's good to have [TS]

you want a game related podcast from far [TS]

across the Atlantic Ocean it's james [TS]

thompson who really is the one who told [TS]

us we should play this game and then we [TS]

all played it I James well i hope you [TS]

liked it since this is all my fault [TS]

yeah pretty much your fault will let you [TS]

know by the end of the episode Tiffany [TS]

arm it is back again to talk about games [TS]

with us hello hey I'm ready [TS]

alright excellent now put listeners to [TS]

the accidental techie podcast know that [TS]

there was a lot of work to play that [TS]

game but you did it you did it that's [TS]

right it has been played an excellent [TS]

really played and of course who we [TS]

wouldn't talk about a video game without [TS]

John siracusa now when we hi John [TS]

excited to move from left to right [TS]

through this podcast yeah that's right [TS]

just keep holding the button down [TS]

alright so inside is a any it's a [TS]

side-scrolling platformer kind of game [TS]

bit but it's a it's got a lot of [TS]

interesting things about it i really [TS]

like that it is is short [TS]

among other things I I complain about [TS]

that a lot but i like that i can play a [TS]

game and get a story and have a really [TS]

nice experience without having to take [TS]

30 hours or something like that because [TS]

I'm just never going to play those games [TS]

but inside was a game i could play from [TS]

start to finish and I really enjoyed it [TS]

spoiler alert we're not doing this [TS]

episode because i was met on it I i [TS]

  enjoyed it [TS]

anybody have any opening statements i [TS]

just thought i would maybe ask about [TS]

this game just in case somebody maybe I [TS]

have some things to talk about in terms [TS]

of the gameplay before we talk about the [TS]

actual game but that's not an opening [TS]

statement so okay thats in this section [TS]

well I mean I think why I played the [TS]

game through yes and then immediately [TS]

wanted people to talk about the game too [TS]

so I convinced everybody else to play [TS]

and yeah it's taken us a little while [TS]

but I've been two months passed and do [TS]

you even remember the game now but [TS]

well thankfully through the magic of [TS]

YouTube i have rewatch somebody player [TS]

either but I did play three times as [TS]

well which does suggest that i probably [TS]

like two could be like to State for the [TS]

record that James did not make me play [TS]

it all right that's true i do not need [TS]

to be coerced I knew this game was [TS]

coming out i know i was gonna play it [TS]

yeah i was a I was excited to play it so [TS]

we should say so inside from play dead [TS]

it is now available on xbox one and [TS]

playstation 4 and of course you can also [TS]

play it on windows using a Windows PC or [TS]

you know boot camp if you want to [TS]

  install it anyway [TS]

uh-huh that's why ATP listeners so I'm [TS]

the the truce the true sadness here is [TS]

Mark going to have a playstation 4 and [TS]

they could have just waited and played [TS]

  it but instead [TS]

that's not what happened i have an xbox [TS]

one so i was able to play it in July on [TS]

vacation so I would have been too late [TS]

yeah that's true that's true good point [TS]

good point so it's out its out there for [TS]

your for your current generation [TS]

platforms and also pc gamers so there's [TS]

ways to play it now i do want to say it [TS]

was kind of nice playing on a laptop [TS]

though because it was very intimate your [TS]

dark we had headphones on [TS]

oh yeah i think that if there's a whole [TS]

atmosphere situation with this game that [TS]

I don't you get yourself immersed in it [TS]

as much as possible you're going to have [TS]

a much better experience and I feel like [TS]

the vastness of it i guess on like a big [TS]

screen like on a television screen would [TS]

kind of take away from the creepiness of [TS]

the game when you're just like staring [TS]

into the portal up a tiny laptop on your [TS]

lap with your headphones on and you're [TS]

like really like this really engulfed in [TS]

  the game [TS]

well also i couldn't identify that those [TS]

little things were chickens right to [TS]

stop was like what are those little [TS]

things and then I saw a screenshot later [TS]

that's all they look like chickens [TS]

they're so cute understand experience [TS]

playing like I moved my playstation 4 to [TS]

my to a gaming monitor instead of a [TS]

television for burning reasons but not [TS]

one occasionally when i move it back to [TS]

the television a lot of the games that I [TS]

play I realized you're so far away i [TS]

mean i guess i should do the math on the [TS]

angles and see what it's like but when [TS]

i'm playing destiny for example i want [TS]

to be able to see like every pixel of [TS]

the the person's head way far in the [TS]

distance and when i'm sitting on my [TS]

couch 10 feet away from ITV I can't [TS]

so there is something to that [TS]

like is this a pc game or is it a [TS]

console game I mean I i also played on [TS]

the playstation 4 but sitting two feet [TS]

away from my monitor i played it so it [TS]

really helps to be able to see the fine [TS]

details in the game like this that is [TS]

almost kind of I don't know if it's not [TS]

made for consoles but it's made with the [TS]

expectation that you're going to be able [TS]

to discern that those things were [TS]

chickens because you'll be able to see [TS]

all the little pixel I played it on xbox [TS]

on a giant TV and I I thought it was [TS]

fine but maybe that's just me and my [TS]

  young man eyes [TS]

yeah it also depends on your distance [TS]

your distance from the TV because of [TS]

your if you have his TV the same size as [TS]

yours but you're 20 feet away its way [TS]

  different [TS]

this is kind of like the game equivalent [TS]

of reading a book under the covers [TS]

you know it was like all huddled up with [TS]

your flashlight i tried to put a blanket [TS]

over my TV and my couch it did not go [TS]

well just build a fort and then play the [TS]

video i did play the bulk of this game [TS]

when my family was not in the house and [TS]

the lights were off and I did start on [TS]

it on the chair that's about six or [TS]

eight feet away from the TV and but for [TS]

the bulk of it I was either sitting on [TS]

the coffee table right in front of the [TS]

TV or standing right in front of the TV [TS]

with my headphones on playing the game [TS]

for most of it so it was definitely that [TS]

was the sort of experience that I felt [TS]

like it demanded John you want to talk [TS]

about gameplay before we get into like [TS]

plots and details like that i do i [TS]

forget if we ever had a gain an episode [TS]

about limbo but i think it's been [TS]

mentioned on the show before this is the [TS]

the game from the same developer prior [TS]

to this and limbo was another side [TS]

scroller thing where you control a [TS]

little boy moving from left to right [TS]

across the landscape that tries to kill [TS]

him in several different ways and that [TS]

game was sort of a you know a critical [TS]

darling of the sort of artsy fartsy type [TS]

of game because it was all silhouette [TS]

was all black like black silhouette [TS]

which is incredibly clever and I think [TS]

about this developer talk about a way to [TS]

save money on development was saying oh [TS]

no it's all for mood and artistic [TS]

reasons but if you can do everything a [TS]

silhouette boy that really must say VIN [TS]

development cost anyway it was very [TS]

moody and atmospheric and it was too d [TS]

in this game if you look at you like wow [TS]

this is like a similar type of game [TS]

engine but so much more accomplished [TS]

artistically but it's still too d you're [TS]

still moving from left to right and [TS]

there is no point in the game in which [TS]

you have any sort of control to go into [TS]

or out of the screen and yet the screen [TS]

in this game is not a bunch of cardboard [TS]

  cutout silhouettes [TS]

you can see things that are farther into [TS]

the screen than your character and [TS]

closer to you within your character but [TS]

you can interact with them and not only [TS]

that this game also twist the axis as it [TS]

follows you so it's not as if the camera [TS]

stays fixed a longer track you're going [TS]

from left to right and many levels your [TS]

character actually is walking sort of [TS]

into the screen a little bit not under [TS]

your control but just because the [TS]

scenery is shifting and the camera is [TS]

shifting so i think that is the first [TS]

degree of difficulty of this game is it [TS]

is it is a more sophisticated complex [TS]

game than limbo because you're not [TS]

strictly in 2d but i think especially [TS]

for people probably not on this podcast [TS]

but all the people i've talked to who [TS]

are not avid gamers who play this [TS]

specific game are very confused and [TS]

frustrated by what they can and can't [TS]

interact with even though it's very [TS]

clear if you've played any sort of these [TS]

games 120 I see what kind of game it [TS]

says the idea that you can't touch that [TS]

crate because it's three inches to your [TS]

to your put player characters left but [TS]

that when you click and sometimes you [TS]

walk in front of something but i just [TS]

walked in front of that if i go up to it [TS]

and hit the the action button how am I [TS]

supposed to pull the last time I ran [TS]

right in front of her right behind it or [TS]

why am I in front of this is why am i [TS]

behind that what are the rules [TS]

surprisingly i'm assuming we'll find out [TS]

no one here at any difficulties with [TS]

that but almost every person i talked to [TS]

who is not heavily into games found this [TS]

one extra sophistication over limbo to [TS]

be baffling like a like a local I can [TS]

handle left to right things are in front [TS]

of you sometimes kind of dark and you [TS]

can't tell you can pick up a stick but [TS]

everything is in the same plane and now [TS]

they added multi-plane and they have [TS]

gone past the skills of a bunch of [TS]

average people which I find a little bit [TS]

a little bit of maybe of a misstep in [TS]

this game but the payoff people who know [TS]

anything about games i think it's [TS]

tremendous because this game looks [TS]

amazing it plays amazing once you accept [TS]

the premise is just a little bit weird [TS]

to me that they made a 2-d game with all [TS]

sorts of 3d stuff that we all accept [TS]

that we just can't touch it's like pho [TS]

  3d I mean obviously it's really 3d and [TS]

the engine like that's why I'm sure but [TS]

my point from our from our interactions [TS]

standpoint it's you know it's 3d when it [TS]

suits are essentially yeah it's [TS]

sometimes it's like set dressing to me [TS]

sometimes I feel like it is part of the [TS]

atmosphere and you're not meant to [TS]

interact with its ok there are times [TS]

when it's hard to read whether something [TS]

  is set dressing and [TS]

but I guess I just sort of internalized [TS]

that's part of the game is that a thing [TS]

I can interact with no is that a thing I [TS]

can interact with oh yes and and you [TS]

know that's part of the you know there [TS]

are sort of 18 objects in this room and [TS]

you need to figure out what the five [TS]

things are two things or the one thing [TS]

is that you need to interact with and [TS]

that's just kind of part of the [TS]

challenge of it but I did notice that [TS]

there are moments when you think to [TS]

  yourself [TS]

logically I need to be able to come [TS]

toward the screen or go away from the [TS]

screen but I can't do that [TS]

so what happens now and that i did find [TS]

myself you know it was never a real [TS]

impediment or less serious impediment [TS]

but it did happen where i would i would [TS]

momentarily be like is it trying to [TS]

trick me it will be or because we're [TS]

side-scrolling here right heat it did [TS]

happen i actually found that it kind of [TS]

funneled you very very carefully kind of [TS]

like up it just it guided you gently [TS]

into the gameplay i don't know i just [TS]

felt like it was pretty natural [TS]

especially when in the very beginning [TS]

when that car is coming and you kind of [TS]

duck underneath the the cliff where at [TS]

first you don't think that you can do [TS]

that because the whole time you're just [TS]

kind of walking through the woods [TS]

walking through and then you know [TS]

there's some up and downs but then when [TS]

the car comes across the road and you [TS]

need to double back and hide underneath [TS]

  the rock [TS]

I felt that was so natural and then [TS]

watching my husband play it he did the [TS]

same thing like just naturally as kind [TS]

of like a an element you're like oh [TS]

someone's coming let me hide under here [TS]

and you could so I don't know I feel [TS]

like a lot of the spots that you could [TS]

interact they did a a really beautiful [TS]

seamless way of kind of demonstrating [TS]

that to you that these are the parts [TS]

you're going to be interacting with and [TS]

I thought that kind of made the [TS]

flawlessness of the gameplay really [TS]

great for me i don't know i didn't have [TS]

I just I really enjoyed it i thought it [TS]

you know it kind of it kind of like gave [TS]

  you a creepy hug [TS]

I don't know how late it without it was [TS]

just it was just really nice feeling [TS]

that it made you feel good about your [TS]

accomplishments and figuring out what [TS]

you can do in the game without directly [TS]

showing you you know blazing let me [TS]

  highlight this thing [TS]

that you need to interact with so it [TS]

lets you feel smart but the same time it [TS]

didn't make you feel so dumb that you [TS]

couldn't figure it out yeah there's a [TS]

sense of satisfaction with the puzzles i [TS]

think you know from mechanical aspect [TS]

with paint a standpoint there's a fairly [TS]

limited number of options that you can [TS]

do this stuff we're talking about like [TS]

your kind of kind of on rails right like [TS]

not exactly but with the whole 3d thing [TS]

but you're kind of on rails and so you [TS]

know you get into situations where it's [TS]

like well there's a limited number of [TS]

things that I can do in a little limited [TS]

number of objects at my disposal and [TS]

that really i think is tiff said does a [TS]

nice job of guiding you gently towards [TS]

ok how can you combine these elements [TS]

based on what you've learned right and [TS]

and then synthesized from that the [TS]

course of action and how do you like to [TS]

take this to the step that you need to [TS]

get to and some of it is trial and error [TS]

right like I don't you die a lot earlier [TS]

i died a lot i feel like the margin of [TS]

error is really nice to win this game i [TS]

think the balance of it of it being just [TS]

close enough that you know you didn't [TS]

like you just missed something or you [TS]

just miss near death but it gave you [TS]

like you did maybe you didn't hit the [TS]

button at the exact second but yet you [TS]

survived that so it wasn't so i need to [TS]

play this section over and over and over [TS]

again in order to hit it exactly precise [TS]

in order to succeed it kind of gave you [TS]

a stumbling moment I guess you would [TS]

call it that's kind of how I perceived [TS]

it and that it just it it worked out and [TS]

unless you did it really terrible you [TS]

know then you may have to do it again [TS]

but I don't know I felt but at the same [TS]

time it didn't make you feel like you [TS]

were just being pushed through the game [TS]

it's not even ashamed either write like [TS]

it's not right and I think we're saying [TS]

like it's not like oh yeah you have to [TS]

be super there are parts that require [TS]

some liked which reflect there are a [TS]

couple places there i feel that you need [TS]

to hit it exactly right but mostly it is [TS]

forgiving and I think the ramp-up them [TS]

to tips point about how it sort of gives [TS]

you that creepy hug at the beginning it [TS]

is a slow ramp-up I know as somebody [TS]

who's not a super expert game player for [TS]

me I felt like it was welcoming in that [TS]

way that you figure things out and and [TS]

it gets it gets a little harder as it [TS]

goes but it is a kind of a gentle ramp [TS]

  up and [TS]

and overall I don't feel like I ever [TS]

felt like the game was too hard at any [TS]

point i enjoyed the whole thing but I [TS]

never felt like I was challenged by the [TS]

mechanics of it was really more just [TS]

figuring out what the puzzles work there [TS]

was a couple of points in it for me [TS]

I think generally dying to diving on the [TS]

DOL's that what you're using where I had [TS]

to do a number of times but i just i [TS]

looked back at limbo just to get an idea [TS]

of what that was like [TS]

and I i think the this is easier than [TS]

limbo the puzzles didn't seem as obscure [TS]

like things seem to make sense and i was [TS]

looking at limbo and I was thinking if [TS]

limbo is golf Mario this is super golf [TS]

Mario's and also this has the advantage [TS]

of no gigantic terrifying spiders and I [TS]

didn't like how you could definitely see [TS]

we're in limbo they took this game where [TS]

they took limbo and they were looking at [TS]

it and they're like we made this cool [TS]

little thing check this out and then [TS]

it's like oh this little part of that [TS]

game that's really cool let's make an [TS]

entire world kind of based on that and I [TS]

feel like it's those little parasites [TS]

that get in the little guy's brain you [TS]

know and make him do things and I feel [TS]

like maybe a universe of course [TS]

yeah i mean like they saw that you're [TS]

like okay this is what's going to be its [TS]

whole cool thing that we can make into [TS]

an entire universe and I thought that [TS]

was great and more money now [TS]

am I the only one who didn't play limbo [TS]

just out of curiosity you should play [TS]

because I played a little bit of it but [TS]

i haven't played the whole thing I think [TS]

James says right limbo requires as [TS]

tougher sections amanda gets to the [TS]

point where you have harder you know [TS]

what you have to do but the hand-eye [TS]

coordination required is a little bit [TS]

  harder than this [TS]

the puzzles are probably equal [TS]

difficulty in terms of like I figuring [TS]

out what you have to do but in limbo [TS]

towards the end you know what you have [TS]

to do when you die maybe fifty percent [TS]

more times before you get an [TS]

accomplished and yeah you if you if you [TS]

play this person is kind of a shame to [TS]

go back and play limbo because the [TS]

progression is so great from limbo to [TS]

this because I just feel like this is [TS]

limbo with tons more money and more [TS]

experienced thrown into it and it's like [TS]

yes more of that like I love limbo and I [TS]

like this even more because it's better [TS]

and everyone every way you can make em [TS]

  better [TS]

this game is better difficulty curve [TS]

  graphically times a thousand [TS]

yeah it is it is yeah I a couple more [TS]

comments on on the beginning part like [TS]

because what it was saying like this [TS]

game like all the all great games speaks [TS]

to the player in the level in in the [TS]

language of game design and if you are [TS]

at all receptive to that language if you [TS]

understand any few words in that [TS]

language it will speak to you and lead [TS]

you to the experience that that I think [TS]

we all had at the beginning of the game [TS]

where you're like alright amazing into [TS]

it huh never played this game before but [TS]

I'm figuring out the rules of the game [TS]

play and what I can do and where I can [TS]

go about your first task in this [TS]

side-scrolling game is run write your [TS]

first task just go right go to the right [TS]

it's like I thought it was very nice [TS]

very gentle like start with going right [TS]

that's that all you wanted was Johnny [TS]

beginnings and then you have to jump [TS]

exactly right but but but not like see [TS]

here's the thing if the game is speaking [TS]

to you as you run you see how you [TS]

interact with a serious you learn that [TS]

you can't go into her out of the screen [TS]

you'll learn what is an obstacle and [TS]

what is not an obstacle when you get up [TS]

to like that first part where you have [TS]

to backtrack are you have to like but [TS]

wait i'm going over here what if i go [TS]

back when I go behind the car or in [TS]

front of the car like it it doesn't such [TS]

and such a nice ramp but I think as it [TS]

is with like if you're designing a piece [TS]

of software humbling it is to put your [TS]

put the thing that you've made in front [TS]

of somebody who doesn't share the same [TS]

sort of mental model of how it's [TS]

supposed to work if you watch someone [TS]

who doesn't under who understands too [TS]

little of the language of game design [TS]

and you put them in front of this game [TS]

and you watch them flounder and fail to [TS]

have the moments that we were having on [TS]

the very very first five minutes of this [TS]

game and they're just they don't know [TS]

  what to do [TS]

they don't understand how their [TS]

character work to the world and it seems [TS]

unfair that they're getting caught or [TS]

captured shot with a dark or anything [TS]

like that it can just be crushing to see [TS]

how how they keep the Sandcastle just [TS]

falls down to dust if you're just [TS]

missing a little bit about even to the [TS]

point where even people who understand [TS]

the game design and played a lot of [TS]

games like there will be a red handle on [TS]

the screen like it's literally painted [TS]

red but because the red is slightly dim [TS]

because this is a cream [TS]

the game they won't see it maybe like [TS]

this is impossible what should i do [TS]

they'll be a spotlight in the game [TS]

shining on a red handle and on that [TS]

screen where nothing else is read [TS]

everything else is great and they won't [TS]

see it and that's what crushes me about [TS]

games like this and why I'm always [TS]

cautious about recommending them even [TS]

things like journey like should you know [TS]

if this is a game you play you don't [TS]

even need to know anything about games [TS]

not challenging the difficulty levels in [TS]

there but like but everything is a [TS]

continuum and what you guys are saying [TS]

is like that the puzzles you know seem [TS]

just right and they weren't to mean [TS]

anything like that for me I felt like a [TS]

couple of the puzzles at most of the [TS]

puzzles off-site in this game [TS]

i didn't spend a lot of time dying [TS]

because i would look at the screen and [TS]

realize what they're trying to get me to [TS]

do and do it on the first try and that [TS]

felt a little bit like not gonna say [TS]

like oh you're just you're just pressing [TS]

from left to right and going through a [TS]

movie because it was there were a few [TS]

parts that were challenging but I want [TS]

to die at least one or two or three [TS]

times and I felt like there are a couple [TS]

few puzzles because I played limbo that [TS]

I like even before the screen loaded my [TS]

god there's gonna be a ice cream three [TS]

screens for now we're gonna have 2x I [TS]

load that screen like get this is that [TS]

matter that feels kind of good but on [TS]

the other hand like oh you know you had [TS]

there has to be a match between the game [TS]

and and the player and I think this is [TS]

this game reaches abroad amount of [TS]

players but it's always a continuum and [TS]

I are you know this is looking for that [TS]

idea of the game that everybody can play [TS]

and everybody can enjoy but it i think [TS]

it just doesn't exist because the great [TS]

experience were all having speaking to [TS]

this game and like have everything flow [TS]

together if that doesn't happen for you [TS]

it just becomes a beautiful but [TS]

  frustrating screensaver [TS]

how long did everybody wait for that [TS]

first car with the lights in the woods I [TS]

think before you actually decided to [TS]

cross it's be gonna be gonna be bold [TS]

I waited for a while mike is gonna drive [TS]

away unwanted he keeps the Crouch [TS]

animation so the language of game design [TS]

there is when i start to move up he's [TS]

maintaining the Crouch that shows that [TS]

this is like a stealth section i have to [TS]

sneak past enough to worry about cares [TS]

if he's another beast if he didn't stay [TS]

in the crash withstood bolt upright then [TS]

yea though I felt like what I got but [TS]

and at that point we don't know anything [TS]

about the story which is actually one of [TS]

things i do want to talk about when we [TS]

talk about the story here I just one [TS]

more thing about gameplay III as [TS]

somebody I mean I John i agree with you [TS]

as somebody who is not a a prolific [TS]

  gamer [TS]

at all I thought this game was maybe a [TS]

little too easy for me and that's saying [TS]

  something [TS]

if it was too easy for me it should [TS]

probably be harder but at the same time [TS]

I did find great joy in the fact that [TS]

even though there were screens where I [TS]

really didn't need to do anything other [TS]

than run and jump that idea i enjoyed [TS]

that I i like the balance of it that I [TS]

although i did die of a few times not [TS]

not not like dozens but you know ten [TS]

times or 15 times in the in the in the [TS]

pace of it and I did have some like [TS]

three or four places where I i really [TS]

need to like shut it off shut off the [TS]

console and come back later with fresh [TS]

eyes to see what I was missing I mostly [TS]

I didn't have to do that and i just got [TS]

to have the experience so I would you [TS]

know that that's nice in the sense that [TS]

you don't get frustrated and feel like [TS]

abandoning it at the same time you know [TS]

maybe that when i was done i thought to [TS]

myself maybe that was a little bit a [TS]

little bit that wasn't quite enough [TS]

resistance that there a need to be a [TS]

little bit harder but you're right for [TS]

everybody that level is going to be [TS]

drawn somewhere different and the reason [TS]

this is a great game is because even if [TS]

i call these puzzles are too easy i know [TS]

just what to do the reward from just [TS]

looking at the screen agree just like [TS]

watching control like it is such a [TS]

beautiful young to look at so many [TS]

beautiful tiny you know details and [TS]

every animation and how the character [TS]

moves and slides his body between things [TS]

and yanks off the slide just it's just [TS]

  so rewarding [TS]

even when you know exactly what to do i [TS]

agree and and up to the point where I [TS]

think the hardest puzzle hand-eye [TS]

coordination wise in the game was the [TS]

the moving blast shield thing right [TS]

um and that one that someone for the [TS]

probably takes people to the most tries [TS]

and that one which I wish there was more [TS]

puzzle like that but that one they they [TS]

added a musical reward with you really [TS]

wasn't there for most the other [TS]

challenge will see the challengers once [TS]

you figure what to do when you do it [TS]

nothing really happens but in this one [TS]

once you've figured out and are on your [TS]

way to solving it there's a music cue [TS]

and you just feel like a champion you're [TS]

like finally there was a hard puzzle and [TS]

I figured out what to do in 22 tries and [TS]

took me two more tries to pull it off as [TS]

soon as I did the music played that's [TS]

  that's that's good game design i didn't [TS]

want more things like that i felt like [TS]

that was the perfect amount for me [TS]

because it just it makes me angry it [TS]

makes me anxious like AI get especially [TS]

  because [TS]

the end like you're saying the art so [TS]

good but some of that also comes into [TS]

how they use that to 22 unsettling [TS]

effect right which i'm sure we'll talk [TS]

about a little bit in the story stuff [TS]

but like the is some of the death [TS]

  animation [TS]

yeah i was her Savior might last into [TS]

oblivion and lots of my god have on the [TS]

whole game exactly car pretty does it [TS]

does it does it not like does not just I [TS]

had a visceral reaction like oh my god [TS]

like you know when that happened and I [TS]

like I mean I i think i like laughed but [TS]

nervously after that because it's sort [TS]

of like it is it's got a weird sort of [TS]

darkly funny but also incredibly [TS]

disturbing aspect to it and it really [TS]

unsettled now let's limbo to ya I mean [TS]

especially since it's basically a child [TS]

but the angry pieces one of the things I [TS]

wanted to say was that that the sort of [TS]

production values on this are really [TS]

high much higher than limbo but it it [TS]

took them six years to make her believe [TS]

because they started it just after they [TS]

finished limbo now it's and it's like a [TS]

small team I think it was 24 limbo and I [TS]

think they're up to 25 or something at [TS]

this point but yes there are two hours [TS]

  they were six years [TS]

yeah well it shows up in the Polish [TS]

there like everyday after look at this [TS]

game and find where where do you see a [TS]

clipping artifact where you see a right [TS]

action where do you see a bomb animation [TS]

like everything is perfect in this game [TS]

and the sound was so great [TS]

did anyone else playing headphones i did [TS]

for some of it i played a bit in [TS]

headphones oh it just sounds incredible [TS]

in headphones I just feel like it just [TS]

it swallows you up and it just puts you [TS]

right there it the little nuances to his [TS]

breathing and the different sounds of [TS]

his feet make on everything like it was [TS]

just it was beautiful it was so great i [TS]

saw a comment from the guy who did the [TS]

music who apparently for part of the [TS]

sort of audio sound of it piped the [TS]

score through a human skull party said [TS]

his Danish denmark everybody yeah extra [TS]

and settle down thanks let's uh ok let's [TS]

talk about the story will fire up the [TS]

spoiler horn now just because you know [TS]

what you should play this game and not [TS]

know all the surprises because i went in [TS]

where with James saying it's great you [TS]

should play it I'm not going to even [TS]

tell you what it's about don't find out [TS]

just go play it and I am I appreciated [TS]

James is wise advice so I give that [TS]

advice no to you you should go play it [TS]

and when you're done come back and [TS]

listen to the sound after the spoiler [TS]

  horn [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

alright spoiler warning study should [TS]

insert the sound of the giant explosion [TS]

seven spoiler-free my washi of that [TS]

giant explosion I would that's my [TS]

favorite character in all game now for I [TS]

mean I said that because when I went [TS]

  into the game [TS]

I didn't know anything about it and I [TS]

didn't know if it was set in the real [TS]

world or what time period i know right [TS]

thing and so that the initial section [TS]

where you've got you know yes or going [TS]

through a forest and then you see trucks [TS]

and it's like well as trucks look you [TS]

know they could be sort of modern-day [TS]

they could be slightly earlier but they [TS]

they look like Earth trucks and this is [TS]

enough forest yes there's a dogs and [TS]

arms and and it all seemed very kind of [TS]

you know just sort of normal is not the [TS]

right word but you know for that sort of [TS]

  like 5-10 minutes [TS]

yeah you know I was thinking is this [TS]

like some World War two setting is the [TS]

sum you know something like that and so [TS]

going into it not knowing anything [TS]

especially not knowing what happens [TS]

  later on it [TS]

just getting that experience of it [TS]

getting increasingly crazier and crazier [TS]

as as the game progressed I thought was [TS]

very good you makes me think of black [TS]

mirror it's like a video game version of [TS]

a black mirror episode better look like [TS]

Mary because it has a better ramp up to [TS]

the crazy and that by the way that's the [TS]

rate you're thinking of design a game [TS]

that's the direction should go it should [TS]

be increasing amounts of absurdity oh [TS]

yeah I'm insanity as the game goes on a [TS]

boy is this game deliver everything that [TS]

that's that's what I wanted to say is [TS]

that I going back to saying like even if [TS]

the even if I could play through without [TS]

dying it would have been a wonderful [TS]

  journey [TS]

the thing about it is that really sets [TS]

it apart from a lot of games I play this [TS]

every few levels every 20 minutes or so [TS]

there would be something where I'd be [TS]

like what is happening right like a [TS]

moment of our perception shift and [TS]

that's in the storytelling the fact that [TS]

we start knowing nothing and you keep [TS]

asking yourself at least I did I assume [TS]

everybody does this is going on here [TS]

what is going on it i was thinking did [TS]

the kid run away and then I'm thinking [TS]

did the kid escaped from prison or [TS]

confinement in some way and and and [TS]

that's where i start with it and it's [TS]

like yes these trucks are the the [TS]

trucks from the you know it's the pits [TS]

the police from a prison or whatever and [TS]

it's the trucks that are I don't even [TS]

know what the story is but I'm trying to [TS]

piece it together and they're like [TS]

setting dogs on him and liked i know [TS]

right um and all of its like it's just [TS]

darker and darker why won't he go laughs [TS]

haha if he wasn't at first you think [TS]

like he's trying to get out from the [TS]

inside and just finally realized that he [TS]

is going to the inside for a game called [TS]

inside you to spend a lot of the outside [TS]

let's talk about this journey that this [TS]

taken because this this boy that you [TS]

control as a player he starts out sort [TS]

of on a run from guards and dogs and [TS]

cars and and all of that and then and [TS]

then you cross a road and then things [TS]

start to change and the story you end up [TS]

  there's a there's a farmer which seems [TS]

kind of pleasant at first although top [TS]

for while the dead pics before you get [TS]

to the farm all take part and then there [TS]

  were dead pigs [TS]

you know I think the salient point is [TS]

when you when you start this game as you [TS]

have a little boy you realize you have [TS]

  to write this immediately [TS]

everything in this game is trying to [TS]

trying to get the boy whether it's to [TS]

kill him or to incapacitate him like [TS]

like limbo like the first thing you [TS]

learn this game is that the world is not [TS]

  your friend [TS]

the people in the world are not your [TS]

friends I hit the dogs in the world are [TS]

not your friends that people are looking [TS]

at you and you're under the water like [TS]

the environment just everything and so [TS]

that is the overwhelming all these games [TS]

like you are pursued you are you are [TS]

costed the world is against you that you [TS]

are fleeing it is not fight or flight [TS]

it's mostly flight and everything in the [TS]

world is out to get you and the world [TS]

doesn't look too Pleasant even the dead [TS]

pig farm it's rainy and overcast and [TS]

that's the part 2 where it starts making [TS]

you wonder since you are you know [TS]

immersion this character and you give [TS]

them what agency they have when it comes [TS]

time to start making choices about doing [TS]

things I always felt a little [TS]

trepidatious because i didn't want it [TS]

like I think the first thing I'm [TS]

thinking of is never seen in the farm [TS]

where you have to like put the chicks in [TS]

  like a machine [TS]

yeah that's the first I'd say difficult [TS]

puzzle in terms of having to realize [TS]

what you have to do which is you have to [TS]

throw chickens in that in that giant [TS]

  blower [TS]

have them blown out and I really thought [TS]

it was gonna grind the music so that's [TS]

  gonna do it [TS]

John you beat the puzzle but did not [TS]

pass the void content know as I expected [TS]

a little chicken bits to go out and hit [TS]

the little thing like you can see where [TS]

they were going about this game is good [TS]

about showing like look here's an inlet [TS]

and there's dust on the ground you can [TS]

see it's sucking even before you put in [TS]

there you know this is fucking things up [TS]

and where the things that suck up come [TS]

out they come out there that is aimed [TS]

right at block mechanically yes I [TS]

understand that but I didn't want to do [TS]

it you don't want to kill the chicken i [TS]

also didn't want to do it i mean at this [TS]

point I didn't know that they were [TS]

chickens so only find out how relatively [TS]

recently guys I feel terrible like that [TS]

I've killed so many zombies and people [TS]

in all kinds of things in games and I'm [TS]

like whatever move on and like that one [TS]

little dead chick out it would crush me [TS]

please the chicks don't have the law of [TS]

parasites coming out of their heads like [TS]

  all the pigs [TS]

yeah they're so cute PP just want to [TS]

  follow you [TS]

I I wasn't sure of the the physics or [TS]

indeed the ethics of firing the chicks [TS]

have a to make it fall off I mean the [TS]

physics are dubious there but the [TS]

gameplay were all that make sense yeah [TS]

yeah but there's like 20 of them i don't [TS]

have much that would weigh and how much [TS]

of a love/hate way p equals angry there [TS]

they shoot out at high speed [TS]

that was the that was the one basic [TS]

physics in the game that was sort of I [TS]

wasn't entirely sure about and [TS]

everything else the physics all seem to [TS]

  feel right [TS]

yeah but yes only worked and it knocks [TS]

the bale of hay off and only one chick [TS]

dies and i think that's sort of that [TS]

  happens to everyone [TS]

it's not like there's something you [TS]

could have done a timing slightly [TS]

differently and save that chick I think [TS]

it's just showing you the stakes if [TS]

being ripped apart yeah dogs make an [TS]

omelet you gotta break some chicks [TS]

yeah Oh John so like the threats or [TS]

story-wise if you know this is from [TS]

limbo and you played limbo and you [TS]

wander past pig and the pigs have these [TS]

little Wiggly parasites you may be [TS]

  thinking like tippers [TS]

uh yeah this this developer lovely [TS]

parasites coming out of things like you [TS]

might just think it's a weird [TS]

coincidence but you move on because they [TS]

don't they don't emphasize that much of [TS]

that point you do wrangle the pig who is [TS]

mad with the parasites and yank the [TS]

parasite out of the pig and the pink its [TS]

  normal again [TS]

but still you're not quite sure where [TS]

the story is going other than I am [TS]

fleeing the world is against me [TS]

this is not seem like a nice place to [TS]

live that this might be part of the not [TS]

sitting close to the TV thing but I [TS]

wasn't sure what the pig if he yanked a [TS]

parasite or he pulled its tail off [TS]

yeah me too Taylor and grant slimy yeah [TS]

that color blind and my class not an [TS]

example game didn't see green but it was [TS]

it was glowing and wiggling after you [TS]

pulled it out of you know the magic [TS]

pigtail what are you talking about [TS]

well I don't know oh no did something to [TS]

the pig we don't know the rules of this [TS]

world I mean I know chickens running [TS]

around when you cut their heads off but [TS]

I don't know pigtail still wiggle butt [TS]

but then he drags the pig backwards and [TS]

it doesn't seem to be particularly [TS]

wanting to be dragged and I'm gonna be I [TS]

just looked like he pulled his tail off [TS]

and was manhandling it or pick handling [TS]

it back into position around about this [TS]

time is also the time when the first [TS]

secret start appearing did any of you on [TS]

your first or subsequent playthroughs [TS]

pursue secrets or religious I'm [TS]

different view of the man last time yeah [TS]

I seriously got yellow cords that lead [TS]

to the orbea right again the language of [TS]

gameplay it is a giant yellow line in a [TS]

game where nothing else is brightly [TS]

colored good acted but it's a little bit [TS]

dim so sometimes people don't see it but [TS]

me Marco miss them completely [TS]

yeah I don't see I only found a couple [TS]

and I did not pursue I pursued a couple [TS]

and I think there are others where I was [TS]

you know should I go and look at this [TS]

thing or is that distraction from where [TS]

I'm trying to go you know right that's [TS]

two different types of play people that [TS]

people do right it's either like plow [TS]

through and let me see what's going on [TS]

and not go to all the little side things [TS]

or you kind of like scavenge around and [TS]

open every box and you know just depends [TS]

on how you want to play [TS]

yeah until I knew what kind of game this [TS]

was I was pursuing the secrets as a [TS]

matter of course in terms of I can tell [TS]

when the game I could tell when there [TS]

was an option to go left the game on me [TS]

to go right and that of course means [TS]

  that there's a secret left but i didn't [TS]

know if that was going to be essential [TS]

for gameplay until I found the first few [TS]

with the orbs and then I said alright [TS]

these are all obviously optional extras [TS]

and their the yellow cords and really [TS]

for the first playthrough i just want to [TS]

see everything but the pig section 1 of [TS]

the orbs is you end up inside a barn you [TS]

see a huge number of other pigs and now [TS]

it is i did find out one of the first [TS]

playthrough on like this is a pig focus [TS]

the game consists of a lot of things [TS]

like there was a there was a bunch of [TS]

dead pigs pigs in a cart there was a pic [TS]

i had to battle with her now the secret [TS]

is in a room with like hundreds of pigs [TS]

  pigs in a blanket [TS]

I mean this is not yeah i mean that that [TS]

that whole sexually we jump off the top [TS]

of the bomb had the only way to survive [TS]

is to land in the box of pigs [TS]

you know i mean it's it's like a sort of [TS]

weird the pig focus essence cream haha [TS]

there was a lot of detail put into some [TS]

of the places that you never ever go to [TS]

like when sometimes when you fall down a [TS]

couple of the alleys or your you know [TS]

you go in a different direction it's the [TS]

wrong way there is a lot of intricate [TS]

detail like drawn into those scenes that [TS]

I was I was always were a little worried [TS]

about getting lost two and so I felt [TS]

like okay I want to come back and check [TS]

this out but i also want to like move on [TS]

and solve the puzzles so i'm not really [TS]

sure right we're going to do these [TS]

things i think most of the secrets for [TS]

fair there was only two I had to look up [TS]

on the internet on my second playthrough [TS]

because I couldn't figure out one of [TS]

them I was right in front of and hydras [TS]

just doing the wrong thing which I think [TS]

it's perfectly fine for a secret because [TS]

they're optional extras and the other 1i [TS]

just plain missed entirely so that one [TS]

on the beach with all the dogs that was [TS]

brutal to get through just for that [TS]

you're my favorite how's my favorite 1i [TS]

want to watch mice i watch my son play [TS]

that I'm familiar with the secret is [TS]

that you're going through it and there's [TS]

a torch on the wall which you haven't [TS]

seen any place else in the entire me [TS]

never seen a torch and when you walk [TS]

  past it [TS]

the little boy's head turns and looks up [TS]

at the torch like it's the most like the [TS]

  game screaming to you [TS]

hey torch this is probably important i [TS]

watch my son play he ran right past 18 [TS]

by dogs over and over again that's the [TS]

Syracuse of parenting style son eaten by [TS]

dogs they might as well had starburst [TS]

coming out of the thing and he's like [TS]

well this isn't fair i mean by the dogs [TS]

like starch touch it was a fun i did [TS]

anybody spot the trapdoor in the [TS]

cornfield and that's part of the secret [TS]

switch well yes I know but it was like [TS]

as I was running through that I can't [TS]

see how you could have seen it unless [TS]

there was a big color thing that I [TS]

didn't see but if you enter the [TS]

cornfield and are thinking to yourself [TS]

this cornfield has a lot of foreground [TS]

  plains of [TS]

animation going by this is probably [TS]

where they had a secret and you [TS]

especially at the action button every [TS]

  two feet [TS]

that's enough it was pretty beautiful [TS]

running through those cornfields oh that [TS]

one yeah I love that agree that at least [TS]

  doping chase but cakes [TS]

alright so one of the one of the first [TS]

real kind of gasp moments happens when [TS]

you end up so there are places we have [TS]

to climb right so you you jumping up to [TS]

climb on a rope or a chain or something [TS]

like that and there's a moment where [TS]

there's something that looks like maybe [TS]

it's something that you can climb and [TS]

you jump up and instead what happens is [TS]

you kind of your head kind of goes in [TS]

this cap thing thats hanging down it [TS]

looks like it might be a light or [TS]

something but it's not bad it's a thing [TS]

that goes on your head [TS]

what you think he is when i first did I [TS]

thought of you have to like swing-off [TS]

yeah yeah that was it i was jumping up [TS]

in order to figure to climb or swing on [TS]

this thing and instead my the top of the [TS]

the head goes right in the little the [TS]

little dome of the thing and something [TS]

amazing happens which is it turns on a [TS]

remote control and and these uh zombie [TS]

guys basically they arise and begin [TS]

walking under your command and it's a [TS]

moment where you think to yourself [TS]

whoa whoa what just happened what is [TS]

this game that I'm playing now it's a [TS]

completely different mechanic then I [TS]

expect and that would that was my first [TS]

incredibly memorable moment of that this [TS]

game is more than I thought it was going [TS]

to be I think I gasped audibly oh yeahh [TS]

two more yeahh up for this start [TS]

okay i'm going to put my uh that's weird [TS]

oh my god and your little feet your [TS]

little feet move as you hang there too [TS]

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah great and it [TS]

was very well designed to get you to do [TS]

that exactly know so that your head [TS]

because it's lit up it's the only thing [TS]

that's lit up with this specific [TS]

signature color of yellow yellow ones [TS]

are and ride that will see you again [TS]

later like there's such a clear visual [TS]

language design because everything is so [TS]

muted everything in the game has a color [TS]

and a purpose and even though there's [TS]

like a haze of like low-contrast over [TS]

the entire game you can still pick out [TS]

the different things in different color [TS]

coding of everything that's involved [TS]

it's almost like you know we know that [TS]

that's going to the first time for the [TS]

game but you know you want it [TS]

and you don't even know what you want [TS]

because nothing really for you to swing [TS]

too but this is the puzzle you have to [TS]

actually like use the report pig is like [TS]

a as a thing to jump up on or whatever [TS]

like it's a surprising number of steps [TS]

because at this point you're immersed in [TS]

the game you like that thing is [TS]

different than everything else I've seen [TS]

this game so far and i'm going to get to [TS]

that thing and yet when the animated [TS]

corpses come up same deal I got just a [TS]

giant smile on the face like oh so [TS]

that's how it's gonna be huh [TS]

it's just such a great moment where you [TS]

really and and then you realize now I'm [TS]

steering this and yes the little legs [TS]

are kind of twitching on the boy as he [TS]

he's walking around these guys and then [TS]

  you realize they're out [TS]

yeah and and you realize that this is [TS]

this is your new set of puzzles is how [TS]

do you steer these people to do what [TS]

what you need them to do to solve the [TS]

puzzle and now you've got sort of [TS]

multiple pieces that are solving the [TS]

puzzle simultaneously which is a the [TS]

whole time you're kind of like a [TS]

  suspended mine [TS]

yeah i'm not sure what the actual [TS]

in-game justification for having this [TS]

like mind control helmet stuck in the [TS]

middle of nowhere they keep a beat CD [TS]

use them to command the workers to do [TS]

that exactly it's it's how they get how [TS]

one person can control bunch of people [TS]

to accomplish just that one person [TS]

couldn't command command control yeah i [TS]

mean i play somebody for game design why [TS]

do they always create surrounded by all [TS]

these rolling things on tracks and stuff [TS]

  right [TS]

but the in-universe explanation like [TS]

this is a game it doesn't want to tell [TS]

you anything it's not going to cut seem [TS]

to explain to you the world you're just [TS]

gonna have to figure it out from seeing [TS]

the environments that support and you [TS]

just kind of have to subtract out the [TS]

gameplay parts of it and figure out what [TS]

is trying to tell you about this world [TS]

which is actually surprisingly difficult [TS]

this game is not interested in [TS]

completely explaining its world's you [TS]

it leaves a lot open to interpretation [TS]

but i think there's enough that bike [TS]

even the most absurd things start to [TS]

make sense in the universe as you play [TS]

  through the game [TS]

yeah I feel like all the sound cues to [TS]

kind of tell you how you're supposed to [TS]

feel in these situations you know like [TS]

the the sound that comes in the pulse [TS]

kind of heartbeat rythm to the whole [TS]

thing it really guide you and in how [TS]

your spot like the amount of anxiety [TS]

you're supposed to feel at each turn or [TS]

if you're supposed to feel bad about [TS]

these guys because the first time you [TS]

control you pull you walking on some [TS]

golf legend he plops down the ground [TS]

then comes up and like it's clear that [TS]

you're not supposed to feel too bad [TS]

about the fact that you're hurling these [TS]

bodies in various scenarios and they're [TS]

pretty resilient than the end it's sort [TS]

of in comic for comic effect like one [TS]

guy is holding his head under his arm as [TS]

he runs around yeah he's a little worse [TS]

for wear but it's clear as you move [TS]

around like these are these are like [TS]

labor like animals and you're not [TS]

supposed to feel super good about that [TS]

but on the other hand you kind of need [TS]

them to solve the puzzle so it's a thing [TS]

is leading you to feel slightly [TS]

conflicted about the whole endeavor [TS]

until everything goes off the rails were [TS]

they people or would like to start with [TS]

who were like intelligent people who [TS]

were zombified or where they like that [TS]

grown as well they're all wearing [TS]

different clothes and the acid i think [TS]

if it was just your zombie workforce he [TS]

would you give them standard uniform and [TS]

sometimes hard hats and stuff they're [TS]

just funny for like one of those [TS]

carrying his head goes got a hard head [TS]

on it's like well what are we really [TS]

protecting here this is there are series [TS]

of puzzles that involve these army guys [TS]

too including ones where you have to you [TS]

know you have to get them in the right [TS]

places and you have to figure out like [TS]

they they slide you around on a track so [TS]

that you can move around and then you [TS]

have to get you have used them to place [TS]

you in the right place where that you [TS]

can go down and then move them to to [TS]

somewhere else and then move through [TS]

  there's a series of those there's a [TS]

there's a UH one where it's chained [TS]

where you end up having to figure out [TS]

that there's a box that's got another [TS]

zombie guy in it and that if you jump [TS]

your zombie guy into another helmet then [TS]

that then you can chain react through [TS]

that helmet to the other zombie guy and [TS]

get him to do what you want and we have [TS]

to kind of enter into the nested [TS]

parentheses and then come back out one [TS]

of the time to solve the puzzle just a [TS]

whole bunch of interesting things that [TS]

happen is you're moving through this [TS]

factory or whatever it is with these [TS]

with these zombies guys just so creepy [TS]

and clever at the same time I love this [TS]

whole section of the game that didn't [TS]

that's the direction this could have [TS]

gone but didn't which is the nested [TS]

parentheses the first time that you know [TS]

they did that then like oh and I thought [TS]

  I think I thought that I [TS]

it's other where this is going but then [TS]

I'm like no kiseki you know some games [TS]

like what is that game where you had the [TS]

the portal gun not portal that the [TS]

portal like game i can't remember name [TS]

amazing game grade confusing now an [TS]

upgrade there was there was a game with [TS]

like a portal gun where you can like [TS]

duplicate yourself and I was like okay [TS]

this is a fun way to solve platforming [TS]

puzzles where you can make a portal [TS]

Minister a duplicate of you comes out [TS]

and you teleport around but that game [TS]

took it to the extreme it's like Nessa [TS]

parentheses you haven't seen this the [TS]

parentheses in 20 layers deep was like [TS]

the swapper yes the swapper yes and that [TS]

you know this game could have done that [TS]

but it does it does the second level of [TS]

nesting and there's a musical cue for [TS]

the second loan nothing because if you [TS]

think about it too hard it's like wait [TS]

what am I even doing here I'm gonna find [TS]

the guy was controlling the guy was [TS]

controlling the guys but they never take [TS]

it like they never keep going with it [TS]

because they know it's that that's not [TS]

the kind of game they want to make you [TS]

take it just far enough to to like [TS]

tickle your mind and be like super [TS]

interesting but that's not the game [TS]

they're building where like by five [TS]

levels from now you're gonna be 17 [TS]

levels deep in mr. parentheses they [TS]

don't tend to repeat a lot of the puzzle [TS]

types in this I mean this is obviously [TS]

similar elements that come up but you [TS]

never really doing the same thing more [TS]

than one or two times [TS]

yeah they don't want to didn't want to [TS]

do it if they don't have a new idea then [TS]

have a new idea they don't do the old [TS]

back there more telling a story than [TS]

trying to make you feel like you can't [TS]

figure out this game you know sometimes [TS]

I feel like game makers are like I'm [TS]

gonna be way smarter than my player and [TS]

I'm gonna really mess them up and make [TS]

them work really hard for this and like [TS]

like a game like braid would do that [TS]

where I just feel like I don't want to [TS]

play anymore because it's making me feel [TS]

  bad about myself [TS]

where is a game that lets you succeed [TS]

and get through and then be able to [TS]

enjoy the story and the beautiful art in [TS]

the beautiful music and the beautiful [TS]

sound like I feel like that that is a [TS]

different type of reward but I I'll I [TS]

appreciate that in this game that they [TS]

aren't trying to make you feel [TS]

inadequate when with the gameplay [TS]

getting so complicated they they hold [TS]

back and that they could so easily have [TS]

gone that way i feel like with this game [TS]

and they do want you to enjoy their new [TS]

ideas like when they have a new idea or [TS]

way we could have a guy who control the [TS]

guy who controls the guy they have the [TS]

idea they want you to enjoy it right [TS]

like just like you said like that nice [TS]

little tickle it makes you feel good it [TS]

gives you the endorphins that like rash [TS]

you want to get playing but yet it [TS]

doesn't take it so far that you're like [TS]

okay I this is beyond i'm done like [TS]

because once you get the reward from the [TS]

idea if they did it five levels deep [TS]

that you already got the benefit of that [TS]

you already got the benefit of a good [TS]

idea you got the fun gameplay you got [TS]

the clever you know twinkle in your eye [TS]

you got the smile you do it 17 levels [TS]

deep now you're just turning into a new [TS]

meta game which is really just figured [TS]

out how to get like you have already [TS]

seen that idea now what you're doing is [TS]

building on it and testing me and seeing [TS]

how well I can do it where is this thing [TS]

every puzzle they have here is like one [TS]

new idea top of even a simple as like [TS]

moving the crate they do like 17 [TS]

variations are moving to create starting [TS]

with the most simple just moving to [TS]

create to climb up something and like [TS]

the dumpster in the beginning they never [TS]

repeat them for the most part they say [TS]

we have one new idea you're gonna do it [TS]

once and then the next one is going to [TS]

be another new ideas sometimes they [TS]

build on each other or subvert the [TS]

previous one but never like okay so [TS]

you're going to move creates well here's [TS]

a room full of crates build the giant [TS]

pyramid in giza that's not what they're [TS]

into the game developers are flirting [TS]

with you that's what they're doing yeah [TS]

that the best way you had to pretend to [TS]

  be a zombie [TS]

yeah so I thought that was a bad child [TS]

States welcome but it was only I think [TS]

about it was like three different three [TS]

maybe four different states that you had [TS]

to go through on that right and it's [TS]

like it's fairly obvious the rules just [TS]

looking at all those markings on the [TS]

ground clearly a you know I need to need [TS]

to jump when they're jumping then I need [TS]

to turn around and then I can't remember [TS]

what the other ones what was it just [TS]

walking jumping and turnaround yeah in [TS]

the right in the right rhythm and center [TS]

and then towards the end of it you have [TS]

to break you have to break from the [TS]

sequence you have to know when it's time [TS]

to leave the line because if you are [TS]

just like I have to stay very still or [TS]

they'll get me and you just a very [TS]

simple augenstein zone don't notice me [TS]

if I stay very still nope you gotta run [TS]

gotta know when to run dogs can tell [TS]

  zombies [TS]

yeah but Kenny Rogers taught me that [TS]

John ya gotta know when to hold them [TS]

yeah almost things you gotta know [TS]

alright so that then we get to another [TS]

thing that happens which is the water [TS]

suddenly got there's a lot as the best [TS]

there's a lot of marine of water the [TS]

creepiest moment for me happen in the [TS]

  water [TS]

  Oh [TS]

yeah there's a lot of creepy moment [TS]

pressure that first moment when that the [TS]

shadow passes that the jumps here [TS]

  totally got me [TS]

you know you're playing the game right [TS]

at that jump skip the jokes here doesn't [TS]

get you your not sufficiently immersed [TS]

in the game but that's why you have to [TS]

play on one sitting just imagine you [TS]

just picked it up after putting it down [TS]

like you know you just picked it up in [TS]

the first two minutes of gameplay you [TS]

got that that's not the way to do you [TS]

got to be like so into the game that you [TS]

can't even see the outside world and [TS]

that thing shoots by reminds me of the [TS]

similar thing that probably was supposed [TS]

to be jump-scare think i mentioned [TS]

before the little girl and ribbon when [TS]

she came on the screen after like [TS]

playing hours and hours of a game that [TS]

was basically it's like the sequel to [TS]

Myst you know a bunch of static screens [TS]

for the most part and the tiny animated [TS]

girl comes up I'd really hit the ceiling [TS]

was a little girl so scared [TS]

hey just don't know if this is a little [TS]

girl has long hair but you know if [TS]

you're under forgot time without your [TS]

clothes you could your hair grow like [TS]

but man that's awesome that just [TS]

inspires me to do so much fanart for [TS]

this like it's not love it's so creepy [TS]

it still gives me the chills [TS]

so I I don't know what you all call this [TS]

your adversary whoo-wee whoo-wee face at [TS]

many points in here i just called it [TS]

called it the mermaid creepy creepy [TS]

mermaid i had made as well I also said [TS]

not an adversary it's a friend some [TS]

misunderstanding it's always the most [TS]

evil scary mermaid but when she appears [TS]

and I was like oh she seems nice light [TS]

back it's a girl looks like a boy to me [TS]

well I thought it was a girl although [TS]

yeah I'm to later on this but I thought [TS]

it was about mate and then as I know she [TS]

seems nice maybe she's good like that [TS]

and it was started your summary breaking [TS]

through the window and the glass [TS]

cracking eventually yes I just the way I [TS]

was like all right you're not my friends [TS]

nothing is my friend this sound effect [TS]

of the water getting sucked in the glass [TS]

cracking cracking sound effects are [TS]

going to shrimp into it so good so [TS]

terrible i love them where he's looking [TS]

through the window and sees the one [TS]

floating like oh that's so so eerie ya [TS]

know and this is nothing but you know [TS]

they spent so much time to get just just [TS]

the right animations of the hair and the [TS]

body and the lighting effects with the [TS]

the light shining on them and you just [TS]

if you spend some time there and shine [TS]

the light on on that [TS]

well dude and watch like his animations [TS]

when the lights into space and the hair [TS]

waving around so incredibly well done [TS]

for a deeper just right it's simple it's [TS]

mostly like a plain background two [TS]

characters on screen one submarine but [TS]

such loving attention to detail and [TS]

every ounce of that animation that it [TS]

just it just feels so hold in part of [TS]

the world you gotta shine the light of [TS]

so you get the personal submarine and [TS]

and you have to learn that it can go up [TS]

and down it's got a light that you can [TS]

shine around and it's got a turbo [TS]

basically that you can you can do that [TS]

will slam into things and make your or [TS]

make you fly out of the water and you [TS]

you get you there are little simple [TS]

puzzles where you have to use all those [TS]

things but also you discovered that this [TS]

mermaid or whatever is a repelled by the [TS]

light so you're able to use that to kind [TS]

of get across and keep pushing it back [TS]

and then you have to get out at one [TS]

point swim and it chases you [TS]

it's very Street this is the most [TS]

stressful part of the game to me I felt [TS]

like absolutely scary mermaid was trying [TS]

to kill me but that's also some of the [TS]

best time to moments too and you're like [TS]

swimming and you're just about to get up [TS]

to those ropes like a little bit later [TS]

on and then she's like right there and [TS]

then she's not and then then she's right [TS]

there again soon as you're climbing out [TS]

of oh it's so well timed it just it [TS]

creates maximum anxiety you know if [TS]

we're going through those doors to like [TS]

get away and get the door closed in time [TS]

the big crushed by the doll and that's [TS]

some great well-timed gameplay to make [TS]

you feel like that and there's a thing [TS]

where like it prevents you from getting [TS]

bored because you're like oh now I see [TS]

another door all this is the same puzzle [TS]

again I just you know hit the switch and [TS]

go into the door i'll make it the last [TS]

minute because the game is designed for [TS]

me to make the last minute haha speed [TS]

romantic and you try to do it and you [TS]

die you wait a second I thought I [TS]

figured out this puzzle you gotta know [TS]

like that's not the way this game rolls [TS]

they're gonna do it slightly different [TS]

this time you can't do what you did last [TS]

time and make that because just when you [TS]

start to get bored with the carefully [TS]

orchestrated dramatic moment in the game [TS]

like oh yeah blah blah all do this and i [TS]

know i'll just make it the game says no [TS]

there's one more little thing you have [TS]

to learn this time at the switch first [TS]

then go back this time where the guy [TS]

back and then go for you know and every [TS]

every step it doesn't let doesn't repeat [TS]

the same puzzle exactly the same way and [TS]

it punishes you for thinking that the [TS]

game is not as good as it is because you [TS]

start to think the game is simple and [TS]

just play it like any old dumb game you [TS]

right terrible ways which is great I i [TS]

really like the the submarine and I was [TS]

quite sad when I thought we were leaving [TS]

  it behind [TS]

oh yeah that's the best rewards use at [TS]

the end of the sublevel no it's not get [TS]

more whole bit more the submarine and [TS]

then then sadly you have to you know [TS]

when it i think it washes up on the [TS]

beach or something like okay then you [TS]

know it's time for you could shoot [TS]

yourself onto the beach it feels pretty [TS]

  good [TS]

yeah I think I did that you're like yeah [TS]

nailed an attraction and love my little [TS]

sub that was another of these moments [TS]

where you know you get the submarine and [TS]

you sort of people around the submarine [TS]

and it's like oh this is another kind of [TS]

they might want to do a little separate [TS]

game and I was like no we will put the [TS]

ideas into this I just a and this is my [TS]

where I want pause and say we are now [TS]

talking about the stress of your driving [TS]

your cool submarine and maybe swimming [TS]

and you also to shine your light on the [TS]

murderous mermaid or it's going to get [TS]

you and i'll just point out this is the [TS]

same game that not too long ago you were [TS]

right you were running in a in a farm [TS]

and jumping on the back of a pig i spent [TS]

a lot of time trying to figure out what [TS]

the building is that you're going [TS]

through for a large portion of that yeah [TS]

there's a lot of the underwater part [TS]

whereas like feels like it's a school [TS]

almost like I kept thinking it look like [TS]

a high school or something like that [TS]

I don't know why it's just true maybe [TS]

that's just the anxiety triggers feet [TS]

because because you went to a flooded [TS]

high school obviously but that's the [TS]

best part about the water in this game [TS]

is that like you can tell that it's like [TS]

a drowned world like it's not just your [TS]

in an ocean or something you're so like [TS]

fart but yeah you go ahead and go under [TS]

there and you see like stairs and like [TS]

wait this is the building this is like [TS]

43 of a building you're like how deep [TS]

  does this go [TS]

you know that now that hole that's again [TS]

with the whole world thing like where am [TS]

I even that you said before like you [TS]

started outdoors you start to question [TS]

like what I outdoors and the giant dome [TS]

like The Truman Show like where is this [TS]

place why I shouldn't have filled with [TS]

water and are these dogs trying to kill [TS]

  me all the time [TS]

yeah but if that ya eligos a drowned [TS]

  science facility that's what I I think I [TS]

I later I later sort of got to that [TS]

point but yeah for a while there it is [TS]

just the incredible depth because a [TS]

certain point I feel like you start to [TS]

lose at least I starts loser of my [TS]

bearings I'm like wait how far have I [TS]

gone down and then I'm because at some [TS]

point to go up and it but like I I sort [TS]

  of lost my [TS]

  z axis Y X I don't know my y-axis [TS]

bearing of like how how [TS]

where am i right like where was drowned [TS]

0 vs where i am now and that's it's very [TS]

  disconcerting [TS]

well that's light later on in the game [TS]

they show that like you're there is no [TS]

bearings because this water on the [TS]

freaking ceiling like him there what are [TS]

you and I had went to sea level for your [TS]

point let me show you the water on the [TS]

ceiling there's no sea level here [TS]

there's no you know there's no top [TS]

there's no bottom is just a continuum of [TS]

  misery [TS]

that's probably what went wrong in the [TS]

first science facility than messing up [TS]

my flight I want to shout out to the [TS]

number to the number 19 might maybe my [TS]

favorite thing in this entire game is [TS]

the not because it's it's hard but [TS]

because it's complicated and fun to step [TS]

through is the the you you flip the [TS]

switch and the number 19 comes up and [TS]

you realize you need to put 20 bodies on [TS]

this platform you have to solve it no [TS]

little life and it's an enormous map [TS]

where you have to keep on rounding up [TS]

zombies and sliding the training powers [TS]

around this whole thing you have you [TS]

have to scour this entire area on [TS]

multiple life uses three levels or maybe [TS]

four levels in order to get everybody [TS]

you need together get your band together [TS]

and get them to the right place where [TS]

you can put them all on that platform [TS]

and i love the whole thing and I went [TS]

through one point I was like how about [TS]

now and it was like 16 or whenever I [TS]

went round 23 Mike know where one of my [TS]

  missing [TS]

it's alright if either it you get to the [TS]

point where you've got 19 and right [TS]

you're one short ya in awhile because [TS]

what are you don't nobody else is [TS]

running around and then I was like oh [TS]

wait there's a guy on the ground there i [TS]

could just pick him up and check him up [TS]

yeah but I felt kind of bad that i did [TS]

not get I feel like what the gameplay [TS]

want with the game wanted me to do was [TS]

to get one short and think there is no [TS]

people left unfortunately as soon as I [TS]

saw that guy up there I knew that my [TS]

head like I didn't get to get that part [TS]

of the game like I was LA and she didn't [TS]

get to experience that part because I [TS]

was ahead of that's the shame of being [TS]

ahead of it is you don't you know that [TS]

they want you to have the experience [TS]

they want you to be staying there [TS]

triumphantly and see the last little [TS]

zombie go on and see that number to [TS]

still be on one can be frustrated and [TS]

  I didn't get that part I think I think I [TS]

got him earlier to know I got him at the [TS]

end it was predominantly and like the [TS]

whole time you're walking through and [TS]

you're sorry that was very New York me [TS]

let me do that again you're walking [TS]

through and who are finding all these [TS]

you and I i loved the whole mechanic of [TS]

them helping you jump tossing you over [TS]

on your grave and jump [TS]

it's creepy to they're always like [TS]

especially when you have to be in that [TS]

crowd of them as then they sort of like [TS]

a lift you out of it and you have to [TS]

make them do that part humanize them a [TS]

little bit more you know what I mean [TS]

like it made me feel like I'm working in [TS]

a group and i'm working in a team and [TS]

then when they hoist you up to that last [TS]

room and that body is like lying there [TS]

you go over to it and you think it's [TS]

going to stand up and it doesn't and the [TS]

light coming in from the window and like [TS]

the dust that's flying in the light like [TS]

it is and the music chips changes and [TS]

then you have to drag that body and then [TS]

drop it over the cliff like while the [TS]

the whole posse is standing there on the [TS]

other edge watches your friend just [TS]

plopped down there like I don't know it [TS]

just that moment just it so many feels [TS]

  right there [TS]

you know it's just I feel like it really [TS]

again i'm playing in a dark room on a [TS]

laptop you know I have the heat of the [TS]

laptop on my lap I have my headphones on [TS]

so it's really you know just all the [TS]

swelling and that the hitching of the [TS]

breath of the character is it's all just [TS]

right there surrounding you and that was [TS]

a big big moment for me in this entire [TS]

game like that just it shifted how I saw [TS]

all of those faceless zombie people and [TS]

nobody it made them like oh my gosh [TS]

these are people real people to me but I [TS]

mean are they helping you if you're [TS]

lying you're controlling them yes to do [TS]

that that's our empathy right that's you [TS]

you're seeing there are those bodies are [TS]

acting as if they are trying to help you [TS]

and thatthat's a that human day does it [TS]

makes you a better humanizes them or [TS]

giving you empathy for them that they [TS]

were people once and now they're just [TS]

your you know zombie helper soror it [TS]

just dehumanizes me that I was thinking [TS]

how more people for Lila yes that room [TS]

with the I think this is the room with [TS]

the body in it where the dust is pulsing [TS]

i think that is enough [TS]

I think that room is one thing about [TS]

another example of what this game does [TS]

so well which is sort of foreshadow the [TS]

next stage of the game because that room [TS]

that whole section there's a dull pulse [TS]

in the background yes not here unless [TS]

you have lots of bass are wearing [TS]

  headphones [TS]

yeah and that last guy but what the one [TS]

they want you to get last essentially [TS]

the body because they wanted to be like [TS]

oh I'm missing a guy let me go get that [TS]

body and you need the people to check [TS]

you over to it anyway when you go there [TS]

you're in this room and there's the [TS]

pulsing is a little bit louder here and [TS]

every time a pulse comes the little air [TS]

filter things that are going to the wall [TS]

puff out yet us comes out because that [TS]

right across right through that door [TS]

that you're going to open with 19 is the [TS]

explosion area my favorite place in the [TS]

entire game and that just it makes you [TS]

feel like there's something more coming [TS]

and it's not going to be totally [TS]

mysterious it was in fact you will [TS]

realize the entire time you've been [TS]

solving this very long 20-person puzzle [TS]

you've been hearing the next thing I [TS]

haven't really been thinking about it [TS]

and the other aspect is when you get [TS]

there you can bring your character up to [TS]

that window and your character will put [TS]

his little hands against the window wide [TS]

open around that but you can't see what [TS]

he sees this happened several times in [TS]

the game which I find frustrating but [TS]

also a little bit delightful and that [TS]

you're like every character in this game [TS]

especially the last part sees what [TS]

they're what they're all looking at the [TS]

surrounding this tank or not but he's [TS]

looking through the window and he sees [TS]

with that what's going on with that [TS]

exploded but I can't see cuz i can only [TS]

look at the side of his head and that's [TS]

just like a weird perverse gameplay type [TS]

of thing but nevertheless makes you [TS]

can't Eliza like I want to know what the [TS]

heck is going on in there was this [TS]

posting them a giant door opens and you [TS]

find out what's going on there [TS]

the best love the explosion and that's [TS]

where we end up next is that there's [TS]

lots of like loud blasts that will blast [TS]

you into smithereens unless you can hide [TS]

behind various shelters and there you [TS]

know you gotta run across a platform and [TS]

and you've gotta hide behind a shelter [TS]

and then you have to realize that you [TS]

have to deploy one of them in order to [TS]

hide behind it and then get across to [TS]

the other side and then there's another [TS]

one way to climb up a ladder and you [TS]

have the time everything right and move [TS]

around and hit the right button so that [TS]

the the shields are in the right places [TS]

at the right time so that you can move [TS]

from place to place to get across that [TS]

whole thing without being blasted into [TS]

little bits at that point I'm like what [TS]

am i fighting my way into [TS]

why am I didn't I see like I'm not [TS]

getting away from trouble so much yeahh [TS]

  two more trouble [TS]

good to see where we have the giant [TS]

deadly pulse hope you like this room [TS]

every house should have room at the [TS]

  little [TS]

  little [TS]

I powers in the distance that wave when [TS]

the pulse goes by the amazing work on [TS]

the shader they did to make like the [TS]

scenery blur when the shock wave comes [TS]

through like these details are not easy [TS]

to accomplish just to make it all hold [TS]

that the shrapnel and stuff that flies [TS]

away in there and even just a death [TS]

animation which is just a minute limbo [TS]

was great about creepy death animations [TS]

but this is like could be 3d death [TS]

animation to see yourself just blown to [TS]

smithereens and parts and blood just [TS]

  flying everywhere highlights for [TS]

different sizes the power of happiness I [TS]

felt like that was the point was like [TS]

yeah this is this is a game that would [TS]

not be suitable for everybody i know you [TS]

liked that part of it be gruesome death [TS]

of the small child would probably turn [TS]

some people off probably all the bodies [TS]

sitting in the chairs for you know that [TS]

last unit test dummies it's like what [TS]

are they even testing here that it could [TS]

be testing the pulse it's a really good [TS]

pulse like you don't know me works it'll [TS]

likely thumbs up guys on the pulse [TS]

really just don't have to switch it off [TS]

which i think is like hold our [TS]

experiments right exactly it's like well [TS]

just seal this place off with the door [TS]

that takes 19 bodies to open it will be [TS]

fine i'll be who's gonna who's gonna [TS]

find 20 bodies it's not gonna happen so [TS]

that I mean that's the gameplay part we [TS]

have to cover you have to subtract out [TS]

the absurdity of the door that takes [TS]

night because it's a fun puzzle to solve [TS]

and really what you're thinking about is [TS]

over the pulse thing like technologies [TS]

that they don't understand that you [TS]

don't understand maybe it is performing [TS]

useful purpose in this area but the [TS]

other hand also seems to be blowing [TS]

everything apart that they've made here [TS]

so not so good at security though the [TS]

next section is fascinating because in [TS]

  the next section [TS]

you know you do something you do some [TS]

more swimming and stuff but then you end [TS]

up in this moment where you you crash [TS]

all the way to the bottom now it's after [TS]

you tried to impart you're thinking of [TS]

his one-year you go down the elevator [TS]

you do some stuff in the end like you've [TS]

gotten done a lot of climbing you're [TS]

doing like manager nathan drake stuff [TS]

and then like you can't make it through [TS]

a bunch of climbing you leap onto a [TS]

chain like just a routine chain a giant [TS]

me train you could easily get it slips [TS]

out of your hand and you fall in the [TS]

water like I'm just about ready to go [TS]

that was stupid let me just start the [TS]

level over again but know it you go down [TS]

the water a and I get you and it doesn't [TS]

reset you and say hey try that puzzle [TS]

games you didn't do anything wrong like [TS]

this is another slight cheat in the game [TS]

it's like but I jumped on the chain was [TS]

fine if you're gonna make me die and [TS]

it's a puzzle and I have to actually [TS]

fasten the chain with a switch or [TS]

something fine let me do it [TS]

don't said you just fall and that's when [TS]

ya a little below guy you've been [TS]

running away from the water for so long [TS]

gets you like there's no way to avoid [TS]

him getting you and doesn't cut away [TS]

stays on and you go you go down [TS]

ya know Mike and there's another smile [TS]

moment from the game like oh yeah like [TS]

that you know just when you thought you [TS]

knew what was going on with these guys [TS]

that's right knee down and down and he's [TS]

got the little orange glow anything you [TS]

know what orange glowing means that's [TS]

their magic control technology and he [TS]

plugs it into you and you still going [TS]

down and down and then plugs and you go [TS]

down and down and down and shaking [TS]

around you they're feeling you like so [TS]

it's just gonna want to let me watch the [TS]

  eelinators checking you out [TS]

they're not where they're going to be [TS]

eating your pretty strongly because [TS]

you're not moving at this point and the [TS]

fisher all around and then you just jerk [TS]

to life in the fish all scatter what a [TS]

great moment and he still still tries to [TS]

like catch his breath he still yeah [TS]

those are any reason the only reason oh [TS]

I can all I can bring it straight the [TS]

water now and I feel like at that moment [TS]

I understood that I called little troll [TS]

doll guys like well I understand like [TS]

how the whole time that like it's the [TS]

reason they're not killing they just [TS]

want to get into the submarine because [TS]

they need to fix you [TS]

they need to say now here we are [TS]

underwater come join us it's a good [TS]

  place to be [TS]

I just need to get that don't stay on [TS]

that submarine you're not doing it right [TS]

come on the water with me it's just the [TS]

other ones didn't have access to the [TS]

little glowy tech to plug into you but [TS]

  this one does [TS]

  that's very charitable interpretation [TS]

yeah that makes its ok then why do you [TS]

think they want to get into the [TS]

submarine where you are I kill you to [TS]

kill you they're not going to kill you [TS]

that are none of them kill you they just [TS]

grabbed you they're trying to take you [TS]

and i think it's it's Telegraph later [TS]

when your close blow off and you realize [TS]

oh all i need to do is stay under here [TS]

until my hair gets long and I'm one of [TS]

those guys in fact all of them probably [TS]

started off as me but I don't want to be [TS]

those guys especially that that was the [TS]

most stressful bit for me was the [TS]

section just before that way you have to [TS]

basically dangled yourself and yes some [TS]

kind of his bday to lure oh it's so well [TS]

done 2 and the way the water the the [TS]

chain or the ropes Kim's the top of the [TS]

heart like that and i do that many times [TS]

that's good that's good design because [TS]

they make you go to the very very end of [TS]

the chain if you don't go to have to [TS]

change your feet don't touch the water [TS]

so you have to like you don't want to go [TS]

in the water the water is scary you've [TS]

been running away from these guys in the [TS]

past seven screens but you have to go to [TS]

  the [TS]

very end of the chain and a your little [TS]

toesies in there it really does create [TS]

maximum and dieting it's that was one of [TS]

my turn it off i have to come back in [TS]

mind too because i just i could not I I [TS]

was just having so much trouble with it [TS]

and I kind of yeah I need to detach [TS]

myself and then come back and view it [TS]

sort of did you know what it wanted you [TS]

to do and just couldn't executor could [TS]

not figure out what I want some of it [TS]

for a while it was I could not figure [TS]

out exactly what I was supposed to do [TS]

and then once I did figure out I had a [TS]

lot of trouble with the timing and so [TS]

that took me i think i need to come back [TS]

and sort of just detach myself from my [TS]

like feeling to invest in some ways area [TS]

i was getting through it i didn't have [TS]

to stop I kind of you know got through [TS]

it I maybe had to redo like one or two [TS]

spots but I feel like the whole thing [TS]

was just amping up my anxiety so much i [TS]

really was getting like a stomachache [TS]

based on this feeling about this part of [TS]

  the game [TS]

it's always like don't you watch the [TS]

walking dead and i just need to read [TS]

spoilers like during the episode because [TS]

I can't handle what's about to come up [TS]

and the height is like if I just know if [TS]

I just know what's gonna happen i'll be [TS]

ok but yeah so I I loved loved this part [TS]

and i think the section that we're [TS]

coming up to is the bit whether it's [TS]

through the weird gravity yes sir on the [TS]

ceiling and then because the sum of that [TS]

in limbo as well towards the end like up [TS]

is down and down is open and yeah that's [TS]

the point where i'm thinking okay like [TS]

everything is out the window in terms of [TS]

reality hear what was going on was gone [TS]

for X Files that was the scene writer [TS]

exhales you have a huge level where [TS]

you've got the boxes that you have to [TS]

pull them and then they shoot up and you [TS]

have to like shoot and shoot up on the [TS]

one box to the other box to open it up [TS]

and there and pull it open and our turn [TS]

it on and then you have to go down and [TS]

then pull your box again and then jump [TS]

back up and then grab and then it jumps [TS]

up and all that and there's that whole [TS]

thing which I really liked which was [TS]

kind of involved and then you go from [TS]

there to the first of the you've got [TS]

water above air things where you have to [TS]

drive you have to wait for the guards to [TS]

go past and then you drop down in and [TS]

then and then from there you end up at [TS]

also at the lab where you can actually [TS]

control with whether the water follows [TS]

goes so you can float the crate yeah you [TS]

can go down or up so you can flow [TS]

creates over and float yourself over and [TS]

all sorts of strange things you have to [TS]

  do so [TS]

that puzzle too so that's when it gets [TS]

even weirder right that's the it's very [TS]

strange stuff that is happening i have [TS]

the bodies connected to the the boxes [TS]

with a little orange glow light [TS]

indicating the color of this tech like [TS]

the bodies are upside down in the water [TS]

like yeah very so creepy so we're [TS]

looking at you later on when you have to [TS]

let all the bodies fall down as part of [TS]

the following possibly change the level [TS]

may just go splat splat splat was [TS]

horrible squishy noise is right and also [TS]

some that part with the like this you [TS]

hide behind that box and it's almost [TS]

like a shipping part of the oh yeah [TS]

because they come in they come into the [TS]

the doors and they're looking for you [TS]

and you have to hide behind the box [TS]

well like they have the they have like [TS]

the cage full of like the zombie people [TS]

don't come in with a forklift to like [TS]

move it out i found it extremely [TS]

disturbing that is that the extra people [TS]

yeah people have like kids with them as [TS]

they're like choosing their zombie you [TS]

know workers that that's what I'm [TS]

assuming is happening inside your son to [TS]

  work day [TS]

oh it says it's so weird that those [TS]

little kids are standing there like [TS]

holding hands with their parents its oh [TS]

it's weird this part of the game by the [TS]

way especially like in apart right for [TS]

almost everything under the Sun but [TS]

especially the part where you get a [TS]

little orange plug put into and you go [TS]

through the netting at the bottom that I [TS]

get a very big vibe of the old aperture [TS]

science facility and portal yes me too [TS]

and you're going to be doing those [TS]

underground chambers deeper and deeper [TS]

and this is big cavernous places with [TS]

lots of cement structures and everything [TS]

like that vibe is very strong in this [TS]

  game [TS]

this world has gone way over past that [TS]

precisely i'm not saying that but like [TS]

  this [TS]

similar field of like concrete 60 style [TS]

structures in like enormous places that [TS]

just seems so large maybe that's why i [TS]

thought some of it was a high school for [TS]

a while after science started with [TS]

potatoes and these people started with [TS]

pigs so yeah yeah more advanced so [TS]

  what's left [TS]

we go into the room and it's like war [TS]

office worker yes some more office the [TS]

office with people like regular people [TS]

are in this office and and people [TS]

standing around a viewing area in [TS]

looking down into some thing [TS]

yeah that's that's I think that started [TS]

as you go through the office area [TS]

eventually you see people run past you [TS]

in the same direction as you who are not [TS]

paying attention to what kind of Jumbo's [TS]

you see like an adult man running by [TS]

cohen he's gonna grab because every [TS]

other adult man you seen up [TS]

that playing a game including the one [TS]

who comes up with his kid by the [TS]

forklift as soon as they see you they [TS]

run and get you the shoot you they taze [TS]

you were they running like wrestle you [TS]

to the ground or whatever like it's no [TS]

game over here to start over from the [TS]

previous checkpoint but someone runs [TS]

past you like bumping the chairs and you [TS]

see that everybody know people are no [TS]

longer interested in you don't [TS]

understand running over and looking at [TS]

whatever the heck is behind those [TS]

glasses things and you can run right up [TS]

to the glass with them and Williams [TS]

against it and look but you can't see [TS]

what's there and that's as far right as [TS]

you can go until you it's another one of [TS]

those go left go right thanks because [TS]

you have to go left and realize well I'm [TS]

industrious i played through this entire [TS]

game i know i'm not stuck here i can [TS]

pull this cart which has wheels and help [TS]

when it goes over go get the green [TS]

hornet shakes yeah but I totally wrote [TS]

that down like i love when the car goes [TS]

over the great that was yeah and it and [TS]

the gameplay design is like you can't [TS]

bring it to the right because they have [TS]

a little bumper that stops you bring it [TS]

there anyway it's very leading you [TS]

towards that hop on there go up on the [TS]

tube climb up because you you are [TS]

industrious person like these people who [TS]

don't feel like they can go any farther [TS]

and that's how you proceed in the [TS]

gameplay as the reward for you [TS]

understanding how this world works but [TS]

yeah this is where things start to sort [TS]

of go off the rails and by the way [TS]

before that and before that when you're [TS]

going into the facility in the [TS]

background as you go i think at this [TS]

point you have a pretty big policy with [TS]

you as you go you see at one point you [TS]

look down you see a bunch of people [TS]

running up a ramp and then when you get [TS]

there you run up the ramp yourself you [TS]

see in the background other people also [TS]

running up ramps a lot of other people [TS]

are running from left to right in [TS]

different planes that you can't travel [TS]

to because of the gameplay reasons that [TS]

you see that you are not the only one [TS]

going from left to right [TS]

other people are doing it as well and [TS]

you start to really think about that but [TS]

what is going on here and then you gonna [TS]

still need to run right right and then [TS]

you see up then you see all the people [TS]

at the tank and looking at something in [TS]

there and you continue but I feel like [TS]

this is where the game starts to reveal [TS]

itself and start to try to show a little [TS]

bit more of its hand about what is going [TS]

on here who are you and what role are [TS]

you playing in this game is you're [TS]

running from left to right [TS]

oh I do want to meet up before we get [TS]

into what about the people were seeing [TS]

the right before you get in there John [TS]

when you were saying earlier that [TS]

someone like the Sami people are like [TS]

walking around with their head in our [TS]

hand and their little hats on its up the [TS]

part after you kind of dropped the water [TS]

on the ceiling and release everybody [TS]

they kind of start following you but you [TS]

don't have on one of the little girl [TS]

we hat that was another twist in the [TS]

gameplay where it's like previously you [TS]

had learned that the only way to control [TS]

these things to get the little hat and a [TS]

second twist was all that broke off and [TS]

now your mobile with a unicycle place [TS]

and third places you know there is no [TS]

hat and also humanizes them even further [TS]

because now they are following you as [TS]

opposed to your controlling them to [TS]

follow you kind of don't know I feel [TS]

like it's more you're one of them [TS]

yeah this library that you run through [TS]

before you get to the big tank that [TS]

everyone's looking in you see like these [TS]

classrooms that have cameras pointed at [TS]

them and chairs all sitting around then [TS]

again like the crash test dummies like [TS]

what science exactly are we doing here [TS]

where we all sit in chairs and we look [TS]

at the poor zombies Bang itself up [TS]

against the glass and leading that [TS]

leaving a big bloody stain and you're [TS]

filming it like it's like you see in all [TS]

these sort of x files are developing [TS]

sci-fi movies where everyone is always [TS]

you know let's observe this terrible act [TS]

together and call it science and you [TS]

know it works if the mood is right it [TS]

kind of works here we could think about [TS]

it too much like y yr old who set up [TS]

these folding chairs into normally [TS]

  cinnamon [TS]

what are you actually studying and [TS]

learning here they're doing evil science [TS]

John it's evil science there's a grant [TS]

they got granted to do what we must [TS]

because we can I understand [TS]

yeah well no is the person running the [TS]

the little zombie person running into [TS]

the door because no one's there because [TS]

everyone's looking in the glass window [TS]

yeah well no nose without diapers [TS]

whatever the experiment happened that [TS]

  they're hurting themselves because [TS]

they're like stuck in there like they [TS]

don't they don't mean to be ya think ya [TS]

anyway now we enter into the water tank [TS]

and find this it's a giant blob of arms [TS]

and legs and stuff all kind of fuse [TS]

together attached to mind control helmet [TS]

as soon as we get into the the big bowl [TS]

of science and your clothes go flying [TS]

off literally the first thing i did [TS]

ignoring the the thing in the middle was [TS]

I just swam up to the window to give [TS]

them all the good look [TS]

haha yeah i saw after the window and [TS]

tried to pull the plugs because I said [TS]

genetic plugs over there so I'm naked [TS]

and I had the big smile is like you [TS]

basically become one of those water [TS]

things now because hey you can breathe [TS]

  underwater [TS]

you don't have any clothes you look like [TS]

a little boy you just here needs to grow [TS]

out but yeah I ran right to vote to [TS]

those people and start yanking on those [TS]

  plugs and and [TS]

in this game it's great that it doesn't [TS]

let you know immediately whether you can [TS]

or can't do something because and [TS]

various other points when you pull on [TS]

the board nothing will happen until Yuki [TS]

bullet right in the morning which is a [TS]

great of that gameplay feature and this [TS]

one pulling I gotta say that pulled [TS]

those place for a little longer than [TS]

most people who normally phone plugs in [TS]

like I gotta put these plugs out and [TS]

like all right I guess I can't do it and [TS]

then most I went over and saw the giant [TS]

  fleshy blob I realized there's there's [TS]

there's some help against is that well [TS]

let's just free this crew and buggy and [TS]

  flesh nightmare [TS]

what could possibly go wrong yeah yeah [TS]

and so that that's what you can do [TS]

though right i mean that's this game is [TS]

like you're gonna do what you're able to [TS]

do which is free this thing I I don't [TS]

know I felt I felt like the time spent [TS]

with the zombies had made me pity them [TS]

so when I see this quivering mass of [TS]

flesh that's attached to these [TS]

  mind-control helmets like it's a it's [TS]

  like they're I don't even know what it's [TS]

a horrible obscene experiment that I was [TS]

behind what Mike character could do at [TS]

this point which is put to pull the plug [TS]

to just unplug this thing and free it [TS]

from whatever they have it doing but [TS]

it's it tries to grab you there yeah [TS]

when you put the first plug is trying to [TS]

grab and also when you buy the window [TS]

when I was by the one trying to pull the [TS]

plug up the people on the other side of [TS]

the glass are motioning to you they're [TS]

saying go there not just telling you to [TS]

get away from the glass they're not [TS]

concerned you're gonna pull the plugs [TS]

yes no you can't pull the weather trying [TS]

to tell you is no go over there like [TS]

that was the creepy thing to me because [TS]

when they're pulling plugs I realized [TS]

the people who are outside want me to go [TS]

over to that flat they're not they're [TS]

not trying to stop me arrow like yo I [TS]

yell or whatever right there encouraging [TS]

me go go over there like watch their [TS]

animation so I'm like all right well [TS]

  I'll go [TS]

and I was going to free the flesh-eating [TS]

anyway you know so I'll go over there [TS]

and start pulling plugs and it's [TS]

reaching for me and pulling out mean [TS]

like chill chill blob I'm just trying to [TS]

help you out here and then the game once [TS]

again subvert expectations when you're [TS]

not the last plug but i think it's like [TS]

a second-class plug the blob is like you [TS]

  belong to me [TS]

yep and you get sucked into the blob and [TS]

for the rest of the game you're a giant [TS]

fleshy blob this horrifying is awesome [TS]

for the rest of the game with my mouth [TS]

  like my job [TS]

we're just like oh my god it was that [TS]

last 20 minutes half an hour god I so [TS]

wanted to tell everybody what it was a [TS]

buyer and I couldn't say you have to [TS]

play this for the last 20 minutes [TS]

because then you go into it knowing that [TS]

there was some big thing at the end but [TS]

I was like just just play the game play [TS]

  the game [TS]

I and yeah it was that it was just I [TS]

thought they'd managed to support things [TS]

enough to that point I was quite happy [TS]

with it and then you get this like this [TS]

last big which is part sort of body [TS]

harder part cathartic release party [TS]

monster movie because you are the money [TS]

you're giving your given the cathartic [TS]

release part though is that you are you [TS]

have powers now because your first love [TS]

you lots of limbs you can grab things [TS]

and all that but you're big you can just [TS]

smash their stuff that before you [TS]

couldn't get through that now you just [TS]

smashed through it it's really quite [TS]

enjoyable and we get to go left you get [TS]

the old to go last a long time do a lot [TS]

of left and there's a lot of destruction [TS]

and you destroy that office area and [TS]

it's so screaming it's so great right [TS]

you're like her I the monster now ranged [TS]

loved it I loved it the scientists [TS]

they're kind of helping you get out [TS]

yes now you see you go we don't want you [TS]

  here anymore [TS]

my favourite bit in that entire segment [TS]

is the part where there's a security [TS]

guard or a contractor selling and [TS]

there's a door he needs to open for ya [TS]

anything towards him you like run away [TS]

from the door and just feel like go far [TS]

away and he'll like group over and start [TS]

trying to open the keypad for you [TS]

I thought that was just amazing like [TS]

it's your they throw you the launch a [TS]

box from up on the gas [TS]

yes yes they're like here take it oh my [TS]

god suddenly suddenly you're powerful [TS]

like when you see like the get a bard or [TS]

the previously we had together a posse [TS]

to help you with you just grab it with [TS]

all your mighty hand yeah French the [TS]

thing on it because it's a it's a nice [TS]

release although i was kinda [TS]

disappointed when you go back outside to [TS]

all your dudes hanging out there that [TS]

you don't absorb them and get bigger [TS]

with oh yeah very direct about it i mean [TS]

i thought the this side the other [TS]

scientists I didn't think they were [TS]

really helping you because they try and [TS]

trap you later on in the level we're [TS]

going to any other yeah that was a black [TS]

mirror moment them in another big tank [TS]

I thought they were afraid for their [TS]

lives and they were trying to get you [TS]

away from them more than anything else [TS]

but also but sort of but they the the [TS]

links to which they go [TS]

that's true like like throwing down the [TS]

box like it does that mean real teams [TS]

weirdly helpful right like i agree i [TS]

started out thinking that way like oh [TS]

yeah they just want to get rid of me but [TS]

  it didn't [TS]

after a while the the tone of it doesn't [TS]

quite fit bad and I i'm still not even [TS]

quite sure I guess what's going on some [TS]

scientists are a little more Center [TS]

better get lunch and stuff right and [TS]

they're like looking at you from the [TS]

little tower and they're like whoa [TS]

something my bad i have many theories [TS]

about this but I want to save them to [TS]

the very end right and this is part one [TS]

of my favorite things when you fall down [TS]

a big shaft and you end up in a diorama [TS]

of the facility you don't relax yeah [TS]

you're getting at but realize that from [TS]

the game but it's so this part like so I [TS]

had all those same feelings like [TS]

smashing through things or whatever but [TS]

but the sequence continues like it [TS]

doesn't end like alright so this you [TS]

know like that's the last 20 minutes it [TS]

keeps going right in a certain point [TS]

there's a puzzle with the with the fire [TS]

three fire thing you have the crate [TS]

right where the giant furnace and let me [TS]

tell you the first time i played through [TS]

this game when I i'm running headlong [TS]

this is just like one big continuous [TS]

thing like the franticness is just going [TS]

going even though it's a fairly long [TS]

amount of gameplay involves from great [TS]

puzzle i'm just running headlong as [TS]

giant blob and I'm I'm concerned because [TS]

i started to identify with a little boy [TS]

and I feel like I was that little boy [TS]

and have trapping the hob and I got to [TS]

level with the big furnace thing and I [TS]

pried open the door use whatever switch [TS]

to open the thing and you know what I [TS]

immediately did I tried to throw myself [TS]

into furnace to burn myself having [TS]

meetings and we get that was an [TS]

abomination and i thought i did not need [TS]

  to exist now [TS]

and guess what it doesn't let you throw [TS]

yourself in the first I it almost lets [TS]

you like you've got to squeeze [TS]

it wouldn't let me and I was like no you [TS]

must live as a blog i also tried to [TS]

squeeze into the furnace a double cup [TS]

same here because you feel like polly [TS]

shouldn't be right i get your community [TS]

have a mobster you're looking for the [TS]

sweet embrace of death right like that [TS]

  that's where you're going [TS]

instead you have to throw a flaming box [TS]

over a bunch of sprinklers it's like [TS]

know your puzzles to solve even if the [TS]

giant blog you might highlight a bit [TS]

where you push somebody out the window [TS]

yes I can't handle your biz like the CEO [TS]

  of the company [TS]

yeah you cannot stop this and then you [TS]

spend the rest of the level covered in [TS]

  blood [TS]

yeah yeah yeahs this splatter mark i [TS]

tried to clean it off in the water [TS]

  didn't work [TS]

yeah you could never get that Cosatu [TS]

only got so I'm sorry for CEOs say I [TS]

  figured out [TS]

okay so I need to take this box I need [TS]

to set it on fire and i know i need to [TS]

throw it back into that thing to the [TS]

right of the flame logo on it right yeah [TS]

speaking my son did not recognize that [TS]

as a flame I said what does that symbol [TS]

is like I don't know like doesn't look [TS]

like anything to you he could not [TS]

identify this fire and then you run [TS]

through the sprinklers go off and you go [TS]

okay I know what I need to do his life [TS]

stuff for a blog now come on my blog [TS]

guys cut me a break the sprinklers [TS]

really but i love the animation that it [TS]

sort of just flows were over things and [TS]

ran things yeah I can't imagine how you [TS]

begin to animate something like that [TS]

squeezes through small buildings it [TS]

sounds it makes our so to swing all the [TS]

grunting I sound like the people inside [TS]

are suffering are you from great heights [TS]

and you you falling you don't die but [TS]

you realize that you like bones are [TS]

breaking and it's 200 and just be like [TS]

you're just that boy trying to do the [TS]

right thing you were like you know what [TS]

I can go save that blob and then oh why [TS]

are you inside and then you you meet up [TS]

with some dogs and like for the help [TS]

better the game about the previous but [TS]

the game you've been like in fear of [TS]

these dogs and the dogs just sort of [TS]

like a freaking out barking at yeah and [TS]

they can't do a thing to right now you [TS]

can't be bothered to even pay attention [TS]

to them yeah I'm factor in the puzzle [TS]

even i thought i was going to squish [TS]

  them [TS]

yeah he seemed to just absorb them into [TS]

your your feet short blocking dog had [TS]

that coming out of the blob [TS]

yeah so they do put you in another tank [TS]

like you you fall into the tank but then [TS]

of course you can get out with your many [TS]

ARMs you see that there's things so [TS]

that's that's the the teasing you with [TS]

the what he called teasing with the box [TS]

bit where you enter a room is like a [TS]

spotlight is a gigantic black mirror [TS]

audience sitting there and the boxes on [TS]

a chain there dangling it and I second [TS]

playthrough I tried to see what you can [TS]

do with that i can go elsewhere in the [TS]

room or whatever but inevitable you have [TS]

to try to get the box and as soon as you [TS]

do the trap door opens up and you fall [TS]

  in a big tank [TS]

yeah but then you realize you can get [TS]

out of the tank and after that point in [TS]

the tank you don't see any of the [TS]

facility operators anymore like I feel [TS]

like the facility operators thought that [TS]

tank is the end of you you're in the [TS]

tank we're good to go it's so clear that [TS]

they had arranged this for you to fall [TS]

into the tank but then you find your way [TS]

out because you're resourceful blob and [TS]

you go into sort of the back backstage [TS]

area of the facility and there's no more [TS]

people there and you bang your way out [TS]

of the facility and come out into the [TS]

forest and and and tumble down to the [TS]

end of the game but I feel like that's [TS]

it that is the only thing that that is [TS]

clear that like you are you're off the [TS]

plan that people have for you they want [TS]

you to follow this tank and there they [TS]

think they're done with you when [TS]

actually you know you all right you're [TS]

  disobeying them [TS]

yep and that's where you and you were a [TS]

blob laying on the shore of the the [TS]

water in the Sun and that's the end was [TS]

anyone else disappointed that point that [TS]

the credits rolled well I stayed on that [TS]

screen for a long time [TS]

yes wondering if the credits were going [TS]

to roll i did play the last 20 minutes [TS]

with my mouth open so [TS]

ya know it's kinda felt like okay I [TS]

thought there might be something up [TS]

something after the credits i was I [TS]

stuck around the whole way I was [TS]

thinking I'm not gonna fit into a [TS]

submarine again how my god across this [TS]

we're gonna need a bigger boat but [TS]

because the sunlight is there is the [TS]

visual into the whole rest of the game [TS]

everything is over Gaston dark and rainy [TS]

and somber there is no ray of sunlight [TS]

anywhere there's only the cold blue [TS]

light of your submarine shining on the [TS]

troll dolls in the water and everything [TS]

and you get in the sunlight is pretty [TS]

clear that this is the resolution of the [TS]

game and you're not dead at that point [TS]

because you're still moving and [TS]

twitching but you're finally content you [TS]

kind of just want to feel the Sun right [TS]

  like that's that's right i'm so that I [TS]

think we can slide this right into like [TS]

what that is going on theories of what [TS]

the deal is with this game before i spew [TS]

forth on my various theories you guys [TS]

have ideas so that's the whole do you [TS]

want to go into the second ending stuff [TS]

yeah if you if you down the second [TS]

ending like if you get all the secrets [TS]

that if the second ending plays into how [TS]

you interpret the game fine but even [TS]

without the secrets you can I think you [TS]

can arrive at the same interpretation [TS]

well I mean it's you know the the sort [TS]

of theme of the game seems to be [TS]

controlled in various forms and you know [TS]

whether you're in control or somebody [TS]

else's in control or you're controlling [TS]

people and and yeah i mean the the [TS]

facility seems to be as we've said sort [TS]

of aperture science style crazy [TS]

experimentations the go wrong and I [TS]

think the flesh nightmare is just their [TS]

latest you know if it prefers flash mare [TS]

  thank you [TS]

it is just the latest in a long line of [TS]

things that should have got the place [TS]

closed a long time ago but yes so that [TS]

the the secret ending once you collect [TS]

all 13 of them i think it is and then [TS]

you go back to the cornfield because you [TS]

can do all the secret stuff in any order [TS]

and it's very nice that the game just [TS]

lets you sort of go to any bit and have [TS]

an explorer and then you go back to the [TS]

cornfield you find the the hatch and [TS]

then there's the musical note sequence [TS]

which you have to pick up which i didn't [TS]

i got this i'm afraid from YouTube [TS]

just that plays a various points in the [TS]

game that tells you what you need to do [TS]

with the control and then you go into [TS]

the sequence where you're in this [TS]

underground bunker and you go in and as [TS]

a bunch of computers in the background [TS]

and there's a sort of mind control [TS]

helmet and the body goes because it back [TS]

to being about that goes to the socket [TS]

on the wall pulls the sake a and the [TS]

room darkens and the boy goes limp just [TS]

like the zombies do when they get [TS]

unplugged and to me that implies that [TS]

either the blob was controlling the boy [TS]

the whole time to get the boy to help it [TS]

escape and when you die like when you [TS]

get dragged down by the mermaids and [TS]

things that you're now properly dead at [TS]

this point but still being controlled [TS]

like the zombies and that I said as you [TS]

  unplug it [TS]

you know you're basically unplugging [TS]

either the the boy is being unplugged [TS]

from the blob or is being unplugged from [TS]

  the player [TS]

mhm yeah the players in German I mean [TS]

just based on your description of it it [TS]

sounds like well the game's over [TS]

you don't need to control me anymore so [TS]

that's the signal with the the fact that [TS]

it's a bunch of computers back there i [TS]

think the yellow wires are all going to [TS]

the computers to but you can definitely [TS]

be interpreted both ways like one is the [TS]

cheeky fourth wall breaking kind of [TS]

thing that's like your kind of [TS]

controlling the player to write so when [TS]

we unplug this your computer won't be [TS]

able to control the guy anymore but i [TS]

think that is just the second level fun [TS]

winking sort of that way i think the [TS]

alternative way of looking at it is that [TS]

is not the boy being unplugged but you [TS]

being unplugged and now that you are [TS]

free now that you've followed all the [TS]

tasks that you've been given you can go [TS]

  about your life [TS]

yeah but I think that's a subject that [TS]

the text is that throughout this entire [TS]

facility these yellow wires are running [TS]

to these orbs these orbs that admit that [TS]

you blow the glow that controls things [TS]

why would you need a bunch of orbs lined [TS]

along the entire run of this game unless [TS]

  there was something controlling [TS]

  something along and [TS]

run of this game i think it's the [TS]

in-universe text meaning of the the [TS]

secret ending is trying to explain to [TS]

you that you are in fact being [TS]

controlled by the blob which you will [TS]

rejoin and that your entire purpose in [TS]

this run-through of this is a big [TS]

facility is being brought there by the [TS]

blob to to set it free and all of the [TS]

parallel tracks in the different z axes [TS]

that you see in the background are other [TS]

people running the same thing [TS]

presumably to go to their blobs in the [TS]

end of their runs various times your [TS]

killed like in the propellers the [TS]

propeller section you get chopped up [TS]

even if you get through that the first [TS]

  time without dying [TS]

you see other bits of redshirted little [TS]

boys float by when the propeller spin up [TS]

of the other boys who have come before [TS]

you try to traverse this facility to get [TS]

to their blob to be free like it seems [TS]

so clear to me that this entire run [TS]

through the facility is towards the blob [TS]

and the people running the facility know [TS]

that you're coming know that you're [TS]

trying to get to the blob don't want to [TS]

make it easy for you many people die [TS]

trying they want to stop you if they can [TS]

but it always ends the same blob know [TS]

they are there are lots of different the [TS]

axes hurt and like father and the screen [TS]

it must be 12 different blog because [TS]

they're not going to your live maybe [TS]

you're the only one who makes it through [TS]

them well but there but that if they're [TS]

stuck on the same two-dimensional [TS]

gameplay they can't come to my blog [TS]

because 24 close to the screen that they [TS]

can only go along their parallel tracks [TS]

right but the fact that they have a room [TS]

with an audience with a box dangling [TS]

from a thing in a trapdoor that's the [TS]

end of the game for the blob thing I'll [TS]

someone made it and they brought the [TS]

blob out and maybe they didn't expect [TS]

the blob to go crazy and squish [TS]

everybody but in the end they had a way [TS]

to control because the whole you know [TS]

they're pulling the box for you the open [TS]

the door for you they're waving you on [TS]

there's an audience like it's so clearly [TS]

orchestrated to to be the end of the [TS]

game also the fact that there's the [TS]

diorama of the whole sort of end area up [TS]

in that office i think i might later [TS]

wink but i don't have to [TS]

yeah i-i-i thought it was just you know [TS]

they're planning out and it's like right [TS]

so well you know we'll have the the the [TS]

sonic boom level here will have this [TS]

here and then you know and then I don't [TS]

think it's like a game playing see [TS]

that's the larger question is what's the [TS]

deal with this world and i think [TS]

table this world is this is not just [TS]

like aperture science where it's like a [TS]

strange facility but the rest of the [TS]

world is more or less normal [TS]

this is like the entire world is gone [TS]

all that's left on this planet whatever [TS]

this planet is is this type of stuff is [TS]

very few people left there is these [TS]

people running this weird science at a [TS]

facility that is clearly they probably [TS]

didn't even make that is clearly in [TS]

disrepair like everyone on this planet [TS]

is dead because i like that you know [TS]

everyone else is gone the whole world is [TS]

a mess and they're trying to crawl back [TS]

up from the ashes by developing this [TS]

technology may be left over by the [TS]

aliens that wiped out the right like the [TS]

whole idea is not a shopping mall around [TS]

the corner if you went across that water [TS]

there's not a bunch of people going to [TS]

their jobs in their homes like this is [TS]

it for the whole world which is why all [TS]

the people act weird like how can you [TS]

have your kid and like this thing like [TS]

this is the normal this is normal for [TS]

them whatever they're doing on this [TS]

planet trying to figure out this tech [TS]

  experimenting with the technique [TS]

probably didn't even making facilities [TS]

they probably don't really understand [TS]

that are falling apart all the time [TS]

this is the state of the world and [TS]

that's why everything that goes on is [TS]

more or less acceptable because [TS]

otherwise you're like what you know how [TS]

can you allow this to go on how can you [TS]

will tell you know enjoy watching boys [TS]

try to get to this blob and and [TS]

squishing everybody in your running [TS]

fleeing from and you don't want to dive [TS]

on the other hand everything else about [TS]

this thing you think is normal like [TS]

chasing a kid and letting him die and [TS]

shooting him and second dogs i'm like [TS]

the only way that can be normal is like [TS]

that the whole world is gone and [TS]

everything is crap and they're just you [TS]

know it's normalized because there isn't [TS]

there is no regular world outside this [TS]

game the whole world is like this one or [TS]

that you were or that you weren't like [TS]

really even a person to begin with but [TS]

rather like the workers there's always [TS]

people like you were growing of that and [TS]

you know because where did you come from [TS]

and why are you wearing a red shirt and [TS]

why do people come before you wear red [TS]

shirt to wear to the other people who [TS]

are running coming from I guess the fuck [TS]

the science facilities I kind of see as [TS]

they were trying to create some sort of [TS]

alternate technology for getting work [TS]

done and getting things done that's like [TS]

when you look at the pigs they started [TS]

experimenting with them and how to kind [TS]

of reanimate these pigs and they're all [TS]

they're all dead everywhere because [TS]

their experiments have failed and that [TS]

was more of a they use the farm the more [TS]

primitive situation to kind of start [TS]

those experiments and then the [TS]

facilities that you kind of go through i [TS]

  see is failed facilities [TS]

that something went wrong just like the [TS]

blob went wrong at this last one we're [TS]

now it's flooded and you have these more [TS]

people that are attacking things like oh [TS]

that went wrong and they turned into [TS]

these you know mermaid people that can't [TS]

come out of the water so they kind of [TS]

abandoned that facility and then moved [TS]

on and it almost feels like it's a [TS]

post-apocalyptic kind of situation of [TS]

just new technology just like James was [TS]

saying that that does feel like it's [TS]

earth its people its you know there's [TS]

corn and there's trees and there's dogs [TS]

but it's more of like this [TS]

something went horribly wrong where we [TS]

all of a sudden needed this type of [TS]

strange workforce this big a perjury [TS]

science facility decided to let's start [TS]

testing and figuring out how to do this [TS]

and you're kind of going through the [TS]

layers of their failed tests and it [TS]

seems like you are a type of person that [TS]

knew what was going on in here and you [TS]

felt the need to kind of get in and i [TS]

don't know like if you knew the blobs [TS]

existed or you at least knew that there [TS]

are weird enslaved kind of zombie people [TS]

that are happening and and being created [TS]

and maybe you had some sort of guilt or [TS]

I don't know a superhero complex about [TS]

like I can be the one that gets back in [TS]

there and stops this maybe you were a [TS]

little boy shopping for a zombie with [TS]

your father and you're like you know [TS]

what this is really kind of messed up [TS]

and I'm i think i'm gonna go take this [TS]

down so I that's kind of how i see it on [TS]

a very surface level if you don't kind [TS]

of like you know really dive in but you [TS]

know the more nuanced I guess [TS]

psychological aspect of it seems to just [TS]

be like you know this the oppression and [TS]

you know stopping the man and don't let [TS]

things get out of hand with the [TS]

experiment saturno/the the depth of it [TS]

i'm not quite sure of yet i just know [TS]

that it was a really great game to play [TS]

but I i don't see it so much as a [TS]

parallel universe is a alien situation [TS]

legs on like John do you think there's a [TS]

rift you think there's a regular world [TS]

outside of everything we've seen this [TS]

game is there a place where people just [TS]

  going to [TS]

small and going to the jobs anywhere and [TS]

i think there are but they have liked [TS]

but they have like these zombie people [TS]

like working in their house [TS]

you know what I mean like these are kind [TS]

of like the these these people this [TS]

experiment it's kind of the tools of the [TS]

world and it's it's kind of a means to [TS]

get those who are more fortunate to use [TS]

those who are they think of us just like [TS]

fleshy bits i guess and this little boy [TS]

is kind of trying to expose that like [TS]

this is wrong and weird so that that's [TS]

how I guess I'm kind of seeing it like a [TS]

like a is if you had a robot Butler you [TS]

know I think that's kind of what I think [TS]

it's just too wrong and weird like that [TS]

the things that go on here would not be [TS]

acceptable in any surrounding civilized [TS]

world unless they're completely secret [TS]

and it's too big to be completely secret [TS]

so I think that like everyone has to [TS]

know this is going on that just can't be [TS]

a world of suburbs and target outside of [TS]

that just can't be because everything is [TS]

too much of a mess even the facility [TS]

itself is not together it's it's slanted [TS]

there's huge explosions it's flooded [TS]

like nothing is even the part that's [TS]

kind of put together and has chairs in a [TS]

cafeteria even that's a mess so I feel [TS]

like that has to be the best this world [TS]

  gets like the cafeteria [TS]

that's that's as good as it gets in this [TS]

world because i can't imagine that is [TS]

going on that I mean like I don't think [TS]

it's like babe I think it's like more [TS]

post-apocalyptic like this is kind of [TS]

necessary that we need this to survive [TS]

and society whether i'm saying [TS]

apocalypse could have been aliens [TS]

because they don't seem to understand [TS]

the orange glow e-tech like that's why [TS]

they keep doing these absurd things with [TS]

it and putting things into pigs to try [TS]

figure it out and if they had made [TS]

themselves I think they would understand [TS]

it more than they wouldn't need two [TS]

people put people in class things and [TS]

film then have like this crash test [TS]

dummies by the big pulses dude they [TS]

would understand this stuff better I [TS]

feel like maybe they're trying to make [TS]

the zombies better like slowly or some [TS]

sort of like real really weird messed-up [TS]

like monsters inc lab you know where [TS]

it's like when they don't really know [TS]

you're okay yeah like we're scaring [TS]

children and we don't know why we're [TS]

scaring children we just are and we know [TS]

it helps us you know I think but later [TS]

on they find out all we actually don't [TS]

have to scare children let you know [TS]

switches around so just gonna yeah [TS]

exactly so you know it could be [TS]

something like that but really messed up [TS]

so the limbo connection is the is the [TS]

limbo has the same global slugs and if [TS]

you want to put these in the same [TS]

universe i think what ya mean I'm not [TS]

necessarily have to but if you do you [TS]

have to kind of decide is limbo before [TS]

or after inside and level is definitely [TS]

darker than inside and it just has the [TS]

the mind-control slugs but you don't see [TS]

and you see like you know signs and [TS]

building so you can tell it was a bunch [TS]

of normal kind of normal earth like [TS]

human inhabited world but things seems [TS]

to have gone pretty far down hill then [TS]

go in there are giant spiders so it's [TS]

hard to really put them in the same [TS]

universe but if i had to put in i would [TS]

probably put limbo after after so much [TS]

as crumbled there's not even that [TS]

facility left anymore and it's just the [TS]

slugs in a scared boy a giant spider but [TS]

i'm not entirely sure you could wedge [TS]

them into the same universe because you [TS]

know that John syracuse it does have [TS]

extensive hit can and about some things [TS]

like doing a lot of ideas about this [TS]

  game [TS]

yeah I don't know if they don't they all [TS]

fit with the evidence is every time I [TS]

come up with a theory i think of yeah [TS]

but why was that guy not helping me or [TS]

why was that guy costing like how does [TS]

it make sense that your pursuit through [TS]

the woods but on the other hand once you [TS]

get into the facility they totally want [TS]

you to get the blob know you're new to [TS]

the blog because they have a plan for [TS]

when you get to the blog but it's there [TS]

it's not internally all the theories [TS]

I've heard none of them explain [TS]

everything that happens in the game just [TS]

you just kind of have to pick something [TS]

when you're in the facility was kind of [TS]

you know you're there and so people [TS]

assume like you know when you when you [TS]

exert Authority people assume that oh [TS]

yes but you can cause I'm going outside [TS]

they're like oh man obviously there's [TS]

some creeper going through the woods [TS]

he's not supposed to be here because i [TS]

was told to shoot anything that's moving [TS]

through the woods right that they are [TS]

the outside guards are like on top of it [TS]

and all the inside scientists are like [TS]

dododo this looks normal cool right so [TS]

you know i think the the normal ending [TS]

the non secret ending where you end up [TS]

on the little thing in the sun is it [TS]

anything i think frustrates traditional [TS]

people want a traditional ending of a [TS]

game they want to see you try and put [TS]

the facility explodes and you escape and [TS]

you go on a boat and you're going to [TS]

  help happily-ever-after obviously [TS]

  happily-ever-afters not gonna happen [TS]

once you become a blob there's no way to [TS]

avoid becoming blah blah blah Blee ever [TS]

i do but what but i think that that [TS]

ending it tries to be challenging which [TS]

i think is is fun and it doesn't give [TS]

you the satisfaction you expect but I [TS]

  think the magic [TS]

even ignoring all the silly secrets in [TS]

headcanon what else is going on [TS]

automatically having and it's very [TS]

simple but having a game where you are [TS]

facing adversity for the entire thing [TS]

and it's super dark and creepy and [TS]

you're always going from left to right [TS]

and ending it where you get to be [TS]

motionless in the sun is an oddly [TS]

satisfying on an emotional level if not [TS]

on an intellectual level because you get [TS]

to rest your resting in the Sun it's a [TS]

beautiful place you're no longer costed [TS]

and it feels like the natural ending to [TS]

the emotional journey of the game but it [TS]

is not an ending to the plot story of [TS]

the game did not not not a traditional [TS]

lending to the plot story of the game so [TS]

it's a game that challenges you to be [TS]

satisfied with the emotions even as you [TS]

are not satisfied with not understanding [TS]

what was going on and not understanding [TS]

what the point of it all was and not [TS]

really knowing if you've succeeded or [TS]

not and not really knowing whether you [TS]

should identify with and almost we're [TS]

trying to shove this blob into the [TS]

furnace like 10 minutes before this and [TS]

so it in that way i think it is a it's [TS]

an interesting ending that is [TS]

challenging in in ways that I i find it [TS]

more satisfying than a more traditional [TS]

lending would be because it did it [TS]

separates max potations one final time [TS]

and then the game ends and I think [TS]

that's great I i think they should have [TS]

allowed you to get into the incinerator [TS]

you know like a Firewatch has a an [TS]

alternate bleak ending you can go for as [TS]

well I i would like to have had the [TS]

option to just end the whole and destroy [TS]

  this terrible monster [TS]

maybe they did that in too many people [TS]

died and never get to see the actual all [TS]

right I think we've covered it this is a [TS]

this is a good game people should play [TS]

it but of course if they're listening to [TS]

this they should have already played it [TS]

people come on James thank you for [TS]

  suggesting it [TS]

this was this was exactly the kind of [TS]

thing that I was looking for is a game [TS]

that I could play like I said that's it [TS]

  it's it's artsy-fartsy as John said it's [TS]

a beautiful to look at it's not [TS]

incredibly difficult to play and it also [TS]

doesn't take forever and it was a real [TS]

trip to to experience it so thank you [TS]

for recommending it to us [TS]

  well you're welcome it [TS]

it definitely I it was purely selfish [TS]

need to want to talk to people about it [TS]

i would encourage people by the way if [TS]

you played the whole game within the [TS]

soul podcast but you haven't done all [TS]

the secrets inside as in so many things [TS]

is so nice and forgiving and that if you [TS]

want to go and get the secrets like I [TS]

would encourage you to do it because you [TS]

can skip to any point in the game really [TS]

really easily and it's fun to find the [TS]

secrets and maybe go look up a guide to [TS]

give you an idea of what checkpoint you [TS]

have to start at but all the secrets are [TS]

  surprisingly satisfying interesting [TS]

especially the one that we already spoke [TS]

with the torch in the dogs [TS]

it's not that bad it's not the type of [TS]

game really go if you wanted the secrets [TS]

you gotta do a perfect run through the [TS]

whole game and find everything no you [TS]

don't have to it's totally random access [TS]

you can go at your leisure [TS]

you can go to the scoreboard room and [TS]

see exactly which ones you haven't [TS]

haven't found how do you do that can you [TS]

explain how to do that [TS]

it's the listeners will know yes and [TS]

right before you go into the big giant [TS]

tank with the blobby thing and when [TS]

you're outside the tank I'm kind of like [TS]

a you get there going like a forklift [TS]

thing it's like a little crazy and have [TS]

to play for the whole game in order to [TS]

get their know if you can skip to any [TS]

point after you finish the game you can [TS]

skip to any point in the game you've [TS]

been previously so just go to the [TS]

checkpoint puts you to check my right [TS]

here and it's a very long vertical red [TS]

ladder on the right edge of the screen [TS]

you can go by both up the ladder and [TS]

down you go down you can't go up anymore [TS]

but if you go up the ladder you'll see [TS]

some yellow wires you follow them [TS]

through and you'll end up in the thing i [TS]

just put in the chapel just a little [TS]

room with a giant harp [TS]

when you've done all the secrets and you [TS]

enter that room the door to the orbit is [TS]

open and that's how you the last one [TS]

there's a sort of netflix tile interface [TS]

where you can just sort of skip through [TS]

visually scene-by-scene nails LOL kinda [TS]

cool like I don't even try that and you [TS]

can so you can go back and forward and [TS]

you can look at stuff in any order and [TS]

if you get a secret or if you get the [TS]

orb then that's it done and you know [TS]

it's not like you you have to know us a [TS]

  wave [TS]

you want to play the game again you just [TS]

go to the thing get the Armistice yank [TS]

the plug out of it [TS]

you're done you can go back and load up [TS]

everything is totally random access it [TS]

can be a little bit confusing and scary [TS]

and that when you pull the 14th plug all [TS]

the lights go out except for the second [TS]

one which is telling you have to go back [TS]

to the place where you found the second [TS]

one so don't think that you've undone [TS]

all your progress because you haven't [TS]

but it's it's so forgiving it's the most [TS]

forgiving like know sometime I don't go [TS]

back and find all the secrets unless [TS]

it's a very short game are really into [TS]

it but this game makes it so easy and so [TS]

forgiving to do that is just a fun [TS]

puzzle to say where is it there in order [TS]

so you can see I did secret number four [TS]

and i did see what number 65 gotta get [TS]

in between them so just start by secret [TS]

number four and go forward 45 minutes [TS]

like the gaps aren't that big [TS]

it's they're fun to find just look for [TS]

yellow wires let's say goodbye to our [TS]

  guests [TS]

james thompson thanks for being here and [TS]

suggesting this unplug me Jason I'm done [TS]

  okay will do [TS]

dan moore and thank you gonna sit here [TS]

and enjoy that being with sunlight [TS]

yep Tiffany arm and watch out for the [TS]

mermaid yeah yeah / nightmare my and [TS]

Jon's siracusa thank you for talking [TS]

about the giant fleshy blob with us you [TS]

know what I'm so glad that all of us [TS]

actually didn't put ourselves into the [TS]

furnace guy here this part of how we [TS]

  tried with your science [TS]

thanks everybody out there for listening [TS]

to the incomparable we'll see you next [TS]

  time bye [TS]
