  a much larger response to our [TS]

  touch-typing survey than i expected we [TS]

  would I haven't looked at any of this [TS]

  because I want to wait for the show kind [TS]

  of curious to see what you would put [TS]

  together you did give me a little [TS]

  preview [TS]

  yes some of the data and whenever that [TS]

  was 24 hours after the show went up [TS]

  there were already would seem like a [TS]

  huge number of replies so lots of people [TS]

  it seems like wanted to share their [TS]

  information about when they learned or [TS]

  did not learn to touch-type what is the [TS]

  final number of people who filled out [TS]

  the survey Mike 3944 people have given [TS]

  their submissions for the cortex [TS]

  touch-typing questionnaire which is the [TS]

  water it's a lot it's a lot and the [TS]

  reddit thread was ablaze and which ended [TS]

  up not being very useful like [TS]

  statistically because you cannot do [TS]

  anything with all of that right all you [TS]

  do is you just see the comments so i was [TS]

  really pleased that we have the [TS]

  questionnaire because we could actually [TS]

  get data which could kind of try and [TS]

  give us some answers so what I did was I [TS]

  took 2,000 responses and put them into a [TS]

  second sheet that i made public to the [TS]

  world so people could take that data and [TS]

  try and help us understand a little bit [TS]

  better because the form on its own [TS]

  didn't give me some of the answers that [TS]

  I wanted so one that once we started [TS]

  getting this data i was like maybe [TS]

  interesting if we could break some of it [TS]

  down by age right because we had the age [TS]

  question in there but i was wondering [TS]

  would it be different for older or [TS]

  younger people as to how they are such [TS]

  as to whether they were taught to touch [TS]

  type that kind of thing we got some [TS]

  fantastic responses and people doing [TS]

  really interesting things with that data [TS]

  which are going to put in the show notes [TS]

  so you can continue to play around it if [TS]

  you want to and take a look for yourself [TS]

  but i think the overall points that I [TS]

  took away from this is that it seems to [TS]

  indicate from our data are completely [TS]

  scientific data that the older you are [TS]

  the more likely you are to know [TS]

  how to touch type and also you're more [TS]

  likely to have been taught school glue [TS]

  and it also appears that the younger you [TS]

  are the more likely you are able to [TS]

  touch type on the touchscreen who that [TS]

  was i guess everyone's hypothesis right [TS]

  yeah but you never know actually never [TS]

  not data and there is a much higher [TS]

  amount of people in the younger age [TS]

  brackets that could touch type or at [TS]

  least self-identified as touch-typing [TS]

  think that's one part that you know I [TS]

  learned a few things in this like if i [TS]

  would have thought we would have had the [TS]

  size of responses that we did maybe a [TS]

  lot of ask some questions differently [TS]

  added in some other questions like you [TS]

  know what is touch thing to you think [TS]

  some people don't look at the keyboard [TS]

  but that isn't what i think of as typing [TS]

  I think of like that whole method that [TS]

  you learn in typing classes i disagree [TS]

  with you there [TS]

  I totally disagree with you if you can [TS]

  type on the keyboard without looking [TS]

  that is touch typing as far as I'm [TS]

  concerned [TS]

  yeah okay now we are I get what you mean [TS]

  like I'm just thinking like as a way to [TS]

  understand if someone was taught it or [TS]

  if they were self-taught I think because [TS]

  when I think of like touch typing like [TS]

  capitalized I think of like what how you [TS]

  are tall in a typing class right as [TS]

  opposed to like I cannot look a keyboard [TS]

  and type III think they're above [TS]

  completely valid I think they come from [TS]

  different areas and now i'm interested [TS]

  in learning of the people that know did [TS]

  they teach themselves you know that kind [TS]

  of thing though we have some of that [TS]

  like the are you learning and did you [TS]

  learn to touch type in schools that is [TS]

  still more dated i can dig into it but [TS]

  overall it was a very useful exercise [TS]

  and we all learned something [TS]

  yeah like I'm looking at some of the [TS]

  charts that friend of the show [TS]

  underscore david smith made and so for [TS]

  example on the question did does your [TS]

  school offer touch typing lessons that [TS]

  peaks for people in the age range of 51 [TS]

  260 at almost eighty percent right there [TS]

  they're saying like yes touch-typing was [TS]

  a thing that their school offers and [TS]

  then you get down to essentially zero [TS]

  221 that age bracket is about [TS]

  looks like about forty five percent on [TS]

  the chart yeah the slope follows upward [TS]

  in that direction so the older you are [TS]

  the more likely it is that you learn to [TS]

  touch-type school but the one that I [TS]

  really like is the question about can [TS]

  you touch type on the glass without [TS]

  looking [TS]

  yep and that peaks for the 17 to 21 year [TS]

  old demographic is essentially [TS]

  60-percent can type on a glass screen [TS]

  without looking which is a higher [TS]

  percentage than I would have expected [TS]

  his way higher than I would have guessed [TS]

  slightly younger is slightly less which [TS]

  is a little bit surprising but I can [TS]

  kind of see maybe why in retrospect my [TS]

  thinking would be the people in the 0 2 [TS]

  16 bracket have had less experienced [TS]

  yeah that was my thought [TS]

  afterward as well it's it's a [TS]

  combination of less experienced and [TS]

  probably less need to do a lot of typing [TS]

  yeah but it's still shockingly high at [TS]

  fifty-five percent but what love is when [TS]

  you get to the 60-plus percent the [TS]

  number who can touch-type on a glass [TS]

  screen without looking drops to exactly [TS]

  zero percent okay yeah that's it's not [TS]

  zero rounded off its exactly zero [TS]

  percent of people 60 or older so that [TS]

  they could type on glass without looking [TS]

  and the 51 260 demographic is at just [TS]

  barely six percent something that i also [TS]

  picked up from looking in the red is it [TS]

  seems like typing classes do still exist [TS]

  but mainly in America who just from [TS]

  looking at people's comments [TS]

  it seems that not a lot of people in the [TS]

  UK if any are in Europe thought touch [TS]

  type but it seems like there are still [TS]

  parts of America where it's part of the [TS]

  curriculum because it wasn't like [TS]

  presenting for everyone who had a lot of [TS]

  people saying to me like what your [TS]

  schools don't teach it so i will infer [TS]

  from that no they do not and that yours [TS]

  must do and you are in America so maybe [TS]

  there's still some of that going on [TS]

  yeah I i think this is interesting i'm [TS]

  really glad that you took the time to [TS]

  put the survey together because yes as [TS]

  you said a a large large number of [TS]

  anecdotal answers and read it is [TS]

  interesting to read through [TS]

  but it's hard to hold out more specific [TS]

  trends [TS]

  been an unusually ridiculously busy time [TS]

  for me so I have less progress to report [TS]

  and i might otherwise want but i have i [TS]

  have definitely move forward on this i [TS]

  have looked at all of the applications [TS]

  and I've gone through a little bit of a [TS]

  process trying to whittle them down and [TS]

  select people to work with in the future [TS]

  how many submissions did you get all [TS]

  right what would you guess resolution [TS]

  this is a more fun game [TS]

  take a guess what do you think 176 wow [TS]

  look at you very precise guess there [TS]

  because what if I'm right the best thing [TS]

  ever right yeah that's exactly return [TS]

  not return on this this roll of the dice [TS]

  here [TS]

  you look like a psychic expect correct [TS]

  and you're almost certainly wrong anyway [TS]

  so there's no there's no downside to [TS]

  guessing exactly so here are the numbers [TS]

  at the time that we are recording the [TS]

  video has about 40,000 views so we can [TS]

  assume that 40,000 people in someway [TS]

  were exposed to the existence of this [TS]

  application and when I took a look to [TS]

  see what was in my dropbox folder which [TS]

  was about a week after the supposed [TS]

  deadline where i was going to look there [TS]

  were 75 applications we can you take a [TS]

  look at that's a really good number [TS]

  because if it would have been a lot [TS]

  higher than that one it would have been [TS]

  super hard to go through and the quality [TS]

  would have probably been an overall [TS]

  worse i would expect that you are able [TS]

  to really with it down to a more [TS]

  manageable number [TS]

  yeah and this is a bit of an estimate on [TS]

  my part but I think that the number of [TS]

  total submission that i may have gotten [TS]

  might actually be quite close to your [TS]

  guests around 150 because after the [TS]

  point at which I looked at it I just had [TS]

  a message to my assistance to anybody [TS]

  who submitted from that point on she was [TS]

  only to pass it along if it really [TS]

  struck her as something worth taking a [TS]

  look at right and I did see i did just [TS]

  look and see briefly that there were a [TS]

  bunch more submissions after that but [TS]

  none of them made it through her barrier [TS]

  ok I i wouldn't be surprised if the [TS]

  total number was 150 but the number that [TS]

  i actually looked at was 75 and this was [TS]

  like like so many moments in life it is [TS]

  really easy to overestimate how easy a [TS]

  task is until you try to do it yourself [TS]

  and so I just had a lot a lot of [TS]

  sympathy for hiring managers and HR [TS]

  people in this moment because everything [TS]

  all this is going to be [TS]

  super easy just to go through a bunch of [TS]

  applications how hard can it possibly be [TS]

  and it turns out the answer is it's a [TS]

  lot harder than you think it is going [TS]

  going through this so i ended up having [TS]

  to break it into two parts i did a first [TS]

  pass [TS]

  we're all I have all I was doing was I [TS]

  literally created a folder called [TS]

  tolerable and so my estimation there was [TS]

  all I want to do on round one is put [TS]

  anything that is tolerable or better [TS]

  into this folder because simply trying [TS]

  to watch all of the videos since some of [TS]

  them were very different in quality [TS]

  it's like it was surprisingly hard to [TS]

  make comparisons after watching three or [TS]

  four videos like your brain just gets [TS]

  really muddled up with all the details [TS]

  so I thought ok I just need to do a [TS]

  quick first pass of which ones are [TS]

  definitely out and which ones are [TS]

  definitely in so I sorted that way and [TS]

  then I thought okay once i have done [TS]

  that then I can try again to make finer [TS]

  distinctions between some of the [TS]

  applications but so that was that was [TS]

  the round one and then I did around to [TS]

  which was trying to limit it down a bit [TS]

  further but that's that's how I ended up [TS]

  doing this on my own so far [TS]

  yeah that makes sense to me because i [TS]

  think if you watch so many things in a [TS]

  row you kind of lose track of what's [TS]

  better than the one another right yeah [TS]

  like whittling it down by like can i [TS]

  watch this and it doesn't have my eyes [TS]

  is a good way of doing things right [TS]

  round one was basically identify the [TS]

  instant nose right that that was all [TS]

  over what we're trying to do because I [TS]

  realized very quickly that as you're [TS]

  watching through stuff you end up [TS]

  comparing the thing that you're [TS]

  currently watching mentally to the thing [TS]

  that you have just watched you're like [TS]

  wait a minute that's not that's not what [TS]

  this comparison should be at all [TS]

  I can't do this just all in one go in [TS]

  the way was originally intending yeah so [TS]

  it was interesting [TS]

  just again since i think that the whole [TS]

  purpose of this show is to talk like [TS]

  about the about the details of being [TS]

  self-employed and of course there's [TS]

  there's some things here that I won't be [TS]

  able to discuss because we're talking [TS]

  about actual people but [TS]

  of the 75 applications that i had 50 of [TS]

  them were sorted as instant nose and 25 [TS]

  of them were sorted as tolerable or [TS]

  better so that was the round one of the [TS]

  applications what happens next [TS]

  was that I had to give my brain a couple [TS]

  of days to filter that out into kind of [TS]

  like okay forget what you've seen and I [TS]

  need to come back to this at a later [TS]

  point so I gave it i gave it a little [TS]

  while because this is where we may [TS]

  return to it later but a whole other [TS]

  thing happened was distracted my [TS]

  attention for a little bit so this has [TS]

  gone on a bit longer than i would have [TS]

  wanted to otherwise but when i came back [TS]

  then I was trying to make a decision [TS]

  about their these 25 applications i want [TS]

  to narrow this down as much as i can [TS]

  again based solely on the animation so [TS]

  I'm still looking at all of these things [TS]

  as files with just a single numbers i [TS]

  don't know anything about the people [TS]

  don't know where they are [TS]

  I don't know their experience i'm just [TS]

  looking at the animations and the second [TS]

  round of cutting was up much harder [TS]

  thing to do but i did around to that [TS]

  took it from 25 down to 10 so that was [TS]

  the the second round of trying to figure [TS]

  out what's happening and there I was [TS]

  looking at many more finer details about [TS]

  the animations like out what what [TS]

  choices did you make to animate this or [TS]

  that some of the things that are very [TS]

  hard to articulate is for example [TS]

  watching a video is seeing did the [TS]

  person get me to laugh when I'm watching [TS]

  the video [TS]

  did this person do something that [TS]

  matches up with my sense of humor [TS]

  this is again that's not to say that the [TS]

  people that I didn't select weren't [TS]

  funny but the question is do they match [TS]

  up with the kind of joke that i might [TS]

  make in a in a [TS]

  video right like that's that's what I'm [TS]

  looking for their and so yeah it was it [TS]

  was it was against surprisingly hard to [TS]

  do but it was down to 10 then so what's [TS]

  happening now is that my assistant is [TS]

  reaching out to those 10 and collecting [TS]

  some information that i want to have [TS]

  about the applications at this point to [TS]

  be able to make some decisions about [TS]

  where to go in the future is it seeming [TS]

  like that this was the wolf wall [TS]

  experiment you were hoping it would be [TS]

  I'm feeling pretty good about how this [TS]

  has been going [TS]

  it's especially interesting to me [TS]

  because I am has your recording i am [TS]

  currently in the middle of animating my [TS]

  next video which should be out in a few [TS]

  days and of course while i am in the [TS]

  process of animating this video I can't [TS]

  help but have my mind constantly turn to [TS]

  thinking about how will this be [TS]

  different when i'm working with somebody [TS]

  else and before the application went out [TS]

  I was just really nervous and really [TS]

  concerned about the kind of quality of [TS]

  applications that i was going to get and [TS]

  now now being future me who has seen the [TS]

  applications i have to say that the [TS]

  average quality of application was much [TS]

  higher than i was expecting which to me [TS]

  was a big big relief [TS]

  ok I'm glad to see that there are lots [TS]

  of skilled people in here [TS]

  yeah and even i just i do have to say [TS]

  that for lots of the applications that i [TS]

  rejected those people could be motion [TS]

  animators like without a doubt i [TS]

  rejected people who could do this for a [TS]

  living I like just but just the average [TS]

  quality was quite high and then that's [TS]

  where it starts to come down to again [TS]

  just some of the particulars about how [TS]

  would I do something or what are the [TS]

  particular choices that they made it is [TS]

  not necessarily about that person's [TS]

  skill but it's their understanding of [TS]

  your style which is to the point i guess [TS]

  yeah exactly and the end but that that [TS]

  is what made it so hard is because there [TS]

  were definitely some applications where [TS]

  I felt like [TS]

  I want to reject this but this person is [TS]

  undoubtedly good like they're very good [TS]

  they just made decisions that I don't [TS]

  agree with for my own style and it's [TS]

  just a strange position to be in but [TS]

  overall I was very happy to see the the [TS]

  quality of the submissions and in my [TS]

  experience of animating that the video [TS]

  that I'm currently working on [TS]

  it's a huge relief to know that in the [TS]

  future i will almost certainly be [TS]

  working with someone to help make this [TS]

  process easier because I can tell I can [TS]

  tell that i am still not fully recovered [TS]

  from some of the RSI problems I had the [TS]

  last video the video prior to that like [TS]

  I am having to work in much shorter [TS]

  bursts and with larger breaks between [TS]

  verse like I can just still feel that i [TS]

  am not fully recovered from that before [TS]

  and so it's it's just I think everything [TS]

  has happened at the right time think I [TS]

  was already thinking about bringing [TS]

  people on board i had a had a thing that [TS]

  accelerated this whole process which I [TS]

  think ultimately is good and I'm looking [TS]

  at these applications and i have to say [TS]

  of of the 10 people that I'm going to [TS]

  get some more information about I think [TS]

  any of them i could imagine working with [TS]

  to produce animations in the future I i [TS]

  think that there's there are definitely [TS]

  people here that I can work with and I [TS]

  want to work with in the future [TS]

  resuming presuming that everything works [TS]

  out between us and that it's all ok we [TS]

  plan on giving feedback to the [TS]

  applicants it was a thing that crossed [TS]

  my mind because I remember when I was [TS]

  applying for a job as a teacher that the [TS]

  schools did give feedback to people if [TS]

  they didn't select you what the very [TS]

  first school I ever applied to [TS]

  I didn't realize they were offering me a [TS]

  job and I sort of talk myself out of the [TS]

  job and then I got some feedback about [TS]

  how like you seemed really uncommitted [TS]

  to the school and then I realized like [TS]

  oh I realized what was happening here [TS]

  I had this ok I have to tell you now but [TS]

  I i applied to the school which was very [TS]

  high on the list like I had a short list [TS]

  of three schools that i really want to [TS]

  work at and i applied to one of them and [TS]

  you do the whole you do a whole test [TS]

  lesson and then you talk to the head of [TS]

  department and then you talk to the head [TS]

  of the school and then presumably they [TS]

  have a little meeting about you and then [TS]

  they walk you out to the front and [TS]

  someone's talking to you and as the head [TS]

  of head of department was walking me out [TS]

  of the building he was going [TS]

  what would you say if we offered you the [TS]

  job right now and I said all I i I'd [TS]

  have to think about it I because I i [TS]

  don't i don't like to make decisions on [TS]

  the spot is like but what if what if we [TS]

  were going to offer it to you right now [TS]

  as like I would just I would just have [TS]

  to think about it and felt like I was [TS]

  just a little late it was just didn't [TS]

  realize what was occurring there and I [TS]

  remember he was like really insistent on [TS]

  this point all the way out to the front [TS]

  door about but if we were to tell you at [TS]

  this very moment that you could start [TS]

  work immediately what would you think [TS]

  about that now it's like I would just [TS]

  have to think about it and then it was a [TS]

  couple days later when I got a phone [TS]

  call from the headmistress and she was [TS]

  telling me how it seems like i was [TS]

  uncommitted to the school and then like [TS]

  the other penny dropped like oh that's [TS]

  what was happening at that's my [TS]

  experience with feedback for applying to [TS]

  jobs no desire to have an impulse but [TS]

  enough like when i watch shark tank [TS]

  I always think when the vc's offer a [TS]

  deal and like all is it weird here's the [TS]

  deal but you have to say yes or no right [TS]

  now I'm sorry might like a policy is now [TS]

  if you if you need me to decide right [TS]

  now the answers right but this is why [TS]

  you would never go on that show [TS]

  I don't know we're never going to this [TS]

  is pointless but they get a reasonable [TS]

  policy you spend hours and hours [TS]

  preparing for it [TS]

  you going to show give your pitch they [TS]

  offer you the hundred thousand dollars [TS]

  you want to tell them you need to go [TS]

  away and think about it [TS]

  yeah it's not unreasonable but anyway [TS]

  back to the feedback questions right i [TS]

  did think about it simply because of the [TS]

  large number of applications and also [TS]

  because of how surprisingly busy my past [TS]

  two weeks were [TS]

  I realized if I was going to do this I [TS]

  able to do with thing that I know eight [TS]

  incredible difficult task but now became [TS]

  a thing that I just did in between shows [TS]

  without really mentioning it [TS]

  hero which was i I had a thing that I [TS]

  needed to do for the company i'm not [TS]

  going to specify what that thing is i [TS]

  will let people in the reddit speculate [TS]

  because people have speculated [TS]

  but basically i had a project that [TS]

  needed to get done and sort of [TS]

  unexpectedly needed to get done and I [TS]

  thought okay this is I'm like a person [TS]

  who tries to find freelancers to work [TS]

  with now I can do this let me see if I [TS]

  can just quickly get some people to do [TS]

  this thing for me and so I was really [TS]

  pleased that i had this thing that need [TS]

  to be done [TS]

  I wrote up a basic job description of [TS]

  what needed to occur i passed off the [TS]

  relevant information about here are the [TS]

  key characteristics of what i'm looking [TS]

  for to my personal assistant [TS]

  I had her go look out for a list of [TS]

  candidates who matched these various [TS]

  criteria [TS]

  she gave me a short list of five people [TS]

  I selected it down to a list of three [TS]

  people I then had three people work on a [TS]

  thing simultaneously as a test for each [TS]

  of them and then two of those three [TS]

  people worked out with doing this thing [TS]

  precisely the way that I needed to be [TS]

  done and so now i have to freelancers to [TS]

  be able to call on for particular task [TS]

  we need to get done and I feel like this [TS]

  thing just happened it was like boom [TS]

  boom boom boom here's another time where [TS]

  I feel like I'm being a CEO there's a [TS]

  thing I need done [TS]

  oh I have people to help me with hiring [TS]

  i'm going to make some decisions about [TS]

  the individuals i'm going to pay people [TS]

  to do this work and then i'm going to be [TS]

  able to see right away if it was done [TS]

  properly and it was just done it was [TS]

  just a thing was like done sorted solves [TS]

  and I feel like without cortex that [TS]

  would never have happened that would [TS]

  have been a huge disaster and huge time [TS]

  sink much more than it was just for a [TS]

  couple of days so yeah there was that [TS]

  from start to finish it was probably [TS]

  three days but it was also a relatively [TS]

  small amount of my time and attention [TS]

  in terms of the actual amount of time [TS]

  that I spent it was relatively small and [TS]

  a much more difficult task a long time [TS]

  like admitting that you needed help [TS]

  right and then trying to go out to the [TS]

  open world to find it right then judging [TS]

  the work and dealing with people like [TS]

  that it's like everything he gets [TS]

  yeah it was it was absolutely terrible [TS]

  but it was it also just to make falls [TS]

  into this category of the theme of the [TS]

  year of less as with so many of these [TS]

  things of me trying to do less and when [TS]

  I was thinking about this is like okay I [TS]

  need someone to help with this task I [TS]

  was I was originally thinking okay let [TS]

  me try to find one person and i'll test [TS]

  one person and i'll do that like but now [TS]

  wait this needs to be done quickly and [TS]

  so this also goes back to the [TS]

  spreadsheet that I still need to help [TS]

  you make at some point Mike I was able [TS]

  to kind of think about this as this is a [TS]

  thing that I need solved quickly what is [TS]

  like what is the cost calculation of [TS]

  having three people just do it if I just [TS]

  pay them to do it and using that [TS]

  essentially as also the job application [TS]

  was like okay well the return on [TS]

  investment for this from a business [TS]

  perspective says just do it like you [TS]

  need this thing done quickly and the [TS]

  cost to trying to do it sequentially [TS]

  doesn't make sense [TS]

  it was an interesting way to realize of [TS]

  of how to try to solve a problem [TS]

  relatively quickly in a very i am [TS]

  thinking about this as a CEO i am not [TS]

  thinking about this as me a person [TS]

  to dvorak switched but if your [TS]

  sensitivity to our side problems is very [TS]

  high switching to dvorak might not help [TS]

  you at all right it might just cost you [TS]

  some time and not be beneficial [TS]

  so that that's why i always try to be [TS]

  really careful when I talk about it like [TS]

  it helped me but I'm not sure that I can [TS]

  universally recommend it though i would [TS]

  say if you are having RSI problems [TS]

  it doesn't necessarily hurt to try [TS]

  a different way to sort the inbox but it [TS]

  I've been trying to delete their custom [TS]

  notifications which is fine enough [TS]

  setup solely for the notifications that [TS]

  told the date notifications so good you [TS]

  can choose to pull down and read the [TS]

  favorite feature is you can choose this [TS]

  it does not mark an email as read until [TS]

  it is opened acted upon [TS]

  so because i am constantly in all of my [TS]

  email is opening a message and marking [TS]

  it as unread again and that drives me [TS]

  crazy because I like to leave messages [TS]

  as unread who until I do something with [TS]

  purposely mark them as read do something [TS]

  with the email but leave it in my inbox [TS]

  that something need to catch up on but [TS]

  it's not unread email anymore so that's [TS]

  my own weird system but i like that has [TS]

  not exactly the same as VIPs but it's a [TS]

  to me it's like a seventy percent [TS]

  solution it's good enough that if I can [TS]

  do this then I don't have to bother [TS]

  flipping back into mail dot app and [TS]

  using a different interface so now i can [TS]

  just do my entire workflow in uni box in [TS]

  one interface in one place and I'm very [TS]
